Well, new intro every dayers.
You saw that one. If you're with us each intro every day, as you saw that one.
If you're with us each and every day on the YouTube side of things.
And a big thank you to the Locked On crew for that one.
As we are off and running here on a Tuesday.
And plenty to get into.
The Transfer Portal has impacted Iowa.
Kaitlin Clark goes number one.
And how about the story of Kate Martin being selected last night in the WNBA draft.
We'll talk plenty of hoops coming up here later in the program.
But kicking things off first as the transfer portal officially opened here on Tuesday.
And with it, Iowa has their first defection of the season.
It is wide receiver Jacob Bostick that has entered the portal.
Now, this one isn't a huge surprise.
Bostick is a young man that showed up on campus a couple of years ago.
Right away, there was buzz about him in August camp.
And right as that buzz was starting, and boy, maybe this is a kid as a true freshman that can find the field.
Very quickly, injuries have been hit him.
And that is something that has really been the story of Jacob Bostic and throughout his career has been the injuries that he has had.
And because of that, it, that is not overly impactful
as it pertains to what we've seen out on the football field. We know there's talent there,
or at least we've heard that there's talent there and something that may be some building
blocks for the future. But overall, it just never worked. It never clicked. Now, I relayed the story
a while ago when the news was coming down inside the football offices about the potential that John Budmeier was going to take over as a wide receiver coach.
And I know Bostick was one of those people initially that maybe took a little convincing
that Budmeier was going to be the guy that was going to help take that wide receiver
group to a new level.
Maybe he never bought in.
Interviews with him last week, he sounded like he was engaged and ready to go.
But it's a numbers game. That is a part of it. Absolutely. As we know, Iowa needs to continue
to trim down scholarships, needs to get down, I believe four more now to get down to that 85
scholarship limit. And we know they're also out there looking for some impactful transfers,
some guys that can help out this season, along with potentially a backup quarterback. So I was
doing some shopping in the portal. They are going to be active from what I've heard, along with potentially a backup quarterback. So Iowa's doing some shopping in the portal.
They are going to be active, from what I have heard, even with the scholarship crunch that
the Hawkeyes are in at this time.
They are going to be looking around, finding that right kind of fit.
And after what we saw a season ago, that shouldn't come as a surprise.
One potential that Iowa can do, when we talk about these scholarship numbers and Iowa being
over the scholarship limit, look, they're going to find a way to get to 85. They're not going to go into a season and break NCAA rules. But one
potential that they have and one thing that they can do is the opportunity to go out there and
make the decision to take some of the guys that came back for the bonus season. A Jay Higgins,
a Nick Jackson, a Quinn Schulte, players like that that came back for this bonus
season of eligibility, guys that are getting good NIL money, and maybe find a little bit more for
them and find a way where they go off scholarship and become a walk-on for the final season. This
is something that has been talked about and utilized some other programs across the country.
It hasn't been the case here. I don't believe that you would see Iowa take one of the
scholarships that they've been awarded to some of the walk-ons recently and say, oh, sorry, we don't
have a scholarship for you anymore. I just don't anticipate that's the way that Iowa does it.
We see what a big deal that is. And obviously guys that come here sold an opportunity, right?
And make the decision that many of these guys had an opportunity to go and play for free. And instead, they want to be Iowa Hawkeyes and go the walk-on route.
I don't anticipate that you're going to see anything of that level where Iowa makes the decision,
hey, we've got to take these guys back off scholarship and go to that level.
But as it pertains to these guys and some of those players that we talked about,
I think that's a real possibility and something that can be done.
players that we talked about, I think that's a real possibility and something that can be done.
Use the NIL and use the Swarm Collective and do that in order to make something where it makes sense for them financially. They will have their, obviously, scholarship paid for. You know,
another change that we've seen in the past, in the past, scholarship athletes and walk-on athletes
were different as it pertains to training table. some of the different things that you get on that
side. With the food side of things, not the case anymore. So it's not as big of a gap as it once
was when we're talking about 10, 15 years ago when that was very significant. Not just the scholarship
money, but the training table and the kind of things that went along with it. And that is not
the case at the same level that it once was. But that's where they are right now. So let's talk a
little bit about the wide receiver position.
And Jacob Bostic, again, a guy that you're hopeful for.
Saw him a little bit late last season.
Now, the offense was such a mess late last season
that was hard to glean a whole lot out of his career.
And we'll see where he ends up
and what kind of player he's going to be.
But you look at the scholarship chart,
and the first thing that jumps out to you
is just the raw numbers of wide receivers that they have.
You know, most programs at the FBS level, you're talking about 10 to 12 scholarship
wide receivers.
That's kind of what you're talking about.
For Iowa, we're not even close to that.
You have one junior in Seth Anderson, the transfer who had the big play to begin the
season in the touchdown on the second play from scrimmage from Cade McNamara.
And we just didn't get a whole lot out of Seth Anderson after that.
Then Caleb Brown, of course, last year coming in from Ohio State.
Those are your two guys with the most experience.
Then you get into a group of redshirt freshmen.
Alex Moda from just up the road in Merriam.
Very good athlete.
A guy that weren't exactly sure what he was.
Came in as an athlete.
Iowa gave him an opportunity at the wide receiver position. Jarrett Bowie, who of the young guys
is maybe the most intriguing. He was on the travel team last year, saw a little bit of playing time,
still maintained his redshirt status, but he's a guy I know that there is some excitement for,
and potentially he could be of this young group, a guy that they have a big chance with. And then
Dayton Howard, and he's kind of the great unknown. a guy that they have a big chance with. And then Dayton Howard.
And he's kind of the great unknown.
I mean, it's almost one of those projects that you're looking at.
You talk about big men in college basketball and using those projects.
Well, he's got the size.
Well, that's certainly the case with Howard.
Was not recruited from Missouri, Kansas, Kansas State. A kid from the Kansas City area, which may be a little bit surprising or concerning,
depending on your perspective.
But Dayton Howard, the other one there.
And then TJ Washington, Terrell Washington Jr., who we saw a little bit running back
last season.
He is transferred over to the wide receiver position and is going through both wide receiver
and running back, trying to get him involved in a couple of different ways.
And then finally, they have two freshmen that are showing up.
Reese Van Der Zee, big receiver. He is your prototypical X receiver. The big guy on the
outside, good speed, played quarterback, played wide receiver, did it all in high school up in
Northwest Iowa. And then KJ Parker, really good athlete and the guy that in the slot. But you're
kind of looking around and outside of Van Der Zee, maybe Howard, there isn't that big X receiver.
We're talking about two extremely young guys.
Both Anderson and Brown are not those guys. We've heard Caleb Brown here during spring practice.
He's been doing a lot in the slot, a lot more at that position in the new Iowa offense. So
that is a part of it here. Overall, this is a need area. When you're talking about not even
including the true freshmen, really five wide receivers on scholarship, two freshmen, and then Washington, you kind of throw in that hybrid role in the
mix there.
Now, what does that mean for a guy like Brevin Dahl?
We talked about him incoming.
It doesn't make more sense with the depth that they have at the running back position
with LaShawn Williams, with Caleb Johnson, with Jazzy on Patterson, with Moulton there,
who we saw a year ago, Williams coming in from Indiana and Dahl.
Maybe that's a position change that we could talk about down the line.
But there's no doubt Iowa needs to be active in the portal.
We talked about this yesterday.
Backup quarterback is going to be a thing.
And definitely wide receiver in this news, I think, just takes that even to another level
here that we didn't get to see much Jacob Bostic.
They need numbers and they need numbers in order to get this offense up and clicking.
Heck of a night last night in the WNBA draft as Kaitlyn Clark goes number one,
becomes the only second player ever from the Big Ten to be selected number one.
An incredible moment.
A lot of great stories out of that.
And, of course, Kate Martin.
That's right, the captain, the glue.
She was also selected, and a bit of a surprise.
Really cool stuff there.
We'll talk some basketball here.
We'll talk about Kaitlyn Clark and her move to the next level.
We'll do that as we continue.

Trent Cotten back with you once again
on the Locked on Hawkeyes podcast.
Thanks for making Locked on Hawkeyes
your first listen every day.
Last night, it was iconic.
It was unbelievable.
It was amazing.
And it was Kaitlin Clark going number one
in the WNBA draft.
Now, TV numbers are not out quite yet, but you can anticipate this is going to be the
most watched WNBA draft of all time.
I believe the record came back 20 years ago in 2004.
You have an iconic player that played the hits, too.
I mean, just showing up.
And we talked about yesterday for you everydayers about the SNL showing up on Weekend Update and doing something like that. We're talking about
an Iowa women's basketball player on Saturday Night Live. Yeah, you can say that Saturday Night Live
isn't what it once was, but come on. I mean, don't be old man yelling at the cloud here.
Have a little fun. It is an iconic show. And Caitlin Clark was there in New York, brought her teammates along.
Just think of that.
Think of what she is going through, what she is living at this point in time.
It's absolutely amazing.
And then shows up wearing Prada.
I mean, just looking the part, right?
It's got the sunglasses, got just an incredible outfit, looking the part, looking like a star.
And that's exactly what she is, dialed up for that moment.
And we knew it was going to happen.
It was inevitable.
We knew that Caitlyn was going to be number one in the Indiana fever the day before,
22 hours before they had this election.
They put out a tweet about that.
Very well done.
Look, Indiana is handling this incredibly well.
And this is such a huge moment
for that league. The opportunity to have a star like this. And what is it about Kaitlyn Clark?
Her demeanor on the court, she's a hard ass, right? And there's parts of that that can be
frustrating at times, but it also can be endearing too. And you know, that competitive spirit that
she has and just how much she wants to win and how important that is.
And now going to this level.
The story is a second grader talking about her dream of playing in the WNBA.
And now here she is to do it with her family.
We know what a close-knit family that they are and that component of it. And having all those different parts all come together on that night.
Yet she's still cool, calm, collected.
How about in Indiana?
So they open up the arena.
And for a watch party.
Now it's one thing for the NFL draft, right?
Now you're a season ticket holder for the Chiefs or the Bears,
the Packers, the Vikings, and maybe you're a season ticket holder
and you get one of those invites.
And that's cool.
But that's for the NFL.
We're talking about the WNBA.
And to have a banged-out building for a watch party,
to just sit around and wait for somebody's name to be announced, that's it.
She's not going to come and shoot around.
She's in New York.
And Indiana had that thing banged out.
An incredibly amazing moment.
Three of her now teammates sitting there in the front row,
they had the camera on them. And as soon as Kaitlyn Clark was selected number one,
they rip off the jackets that are wearing and they're all wearing Kaitlyn Clark jerseys.
It's amazing. And, you know, there's times that we put a cap on exactly what Kaitlyn Clark is and
what she can be and what she has been for the University of Iowa, for the women's
athletic department, for the department as a whole, and for the women's basketball program.
We put a cap on those things and we just shouldn't because as we've seen time in and time out
from the iconic shots, the buzzer beaters, the logo threes, the style, the grace, all
those things that she plays with.
And there's always something more.
Now, what is she going to be when she steps foot on the court for the first time?
Is there going to be a transitional period? There will be. It goes for everybody, right?
It doesn't matter what kind of level and what league. When you're taking that step up and you
go to the professional ranks, there's a step. But to think that she's going to quote-unquote
struggle. Yeah, the numbers are not going to quote-unquote struggle, yes, the numbers
are not going to be the same. We get that. Now, people talk about how it took a while for a player
like Kelsey Plum. Kelsey Plum's 5'8". How it took a while for Inesco. Didn't shoot it well early in
her career. Kaitlyn Clark's a different player. Kaitlyn Clark is six foot tall. Kaitlin Clark is a big point guard.
And yes, teams are going to play physical.
And the physicality that she saw in games against West Virginia, against UConn,
there's going to be defenders that are going to be able to do that.
But the teammates she's going to play with now,
with Leah Boston and company in Indiana,
they're going to be good.
The over-under, by the way, at FanDuel right now.
21.5 wins this season out of the 40 games
for the Indiana Fever. I know there's going to be a ton of fever gear out there. There's going to be
a ton of people that are going to be involved, but what a moment. What a time. And if you would
have told me not too long ago that instead of watching my Minnesota Twins, as they got beat
last night by the Orioles, instead of having that on, baseball. NBA hasn't started. That'll
start tonight with the play-in tournament. But my eyes not were just going to be there
to watch Kaitlyn Clark. Just kept it on. Kept watching. Because that's what women's basketball
has done. And that's the growth that has been there. And it will continue. And not just to
watch Kaitlyn be selected, but just to watch Caitlin be selected.
But just to have it on throughout the course of the evening.
Unthinkable.
And I know I'm not alone.
And I know a lot of people had the exact same thing happen with them.
Absolutely amazing.
One more amazing part.
And that was Kate Martin.
We'll talk about Kate being selected in the WNBA draft.
What a moment that was.
How cool it was.
And we'll get into that as we continue.
This is Locked on Hawkeyes.

Trent Conant back with you one final time on the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast.
Thanks for making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day Kate Martin goes in the WNBA draft now
we have to start here it's an incredible long shot
to make the lead and unless you're Caitlin Clark unless you're one of these
top level stars Cameron Brink, Cardosa, Angel Reese, players like that.
It's tough.
We saw this just a year ago with Monica Sinato.
And she was there, and very quickly, it was done.
There are only 12 teams in the WNBA.
There are only 12 roster spots in the WNBA.
You're talking about 144 players.
144 of the best players from the age 21 to double that.
42 with Diana Taurasi.
144 players worldwide that make a WNBA roster.
Think of that.
Think of the difficult nature.
And though the likelihood that Kate Martin will get an opportunity outside of
maybe playing in a preseason game to make a roster, it's going to be tough. We know what
kind of competitor she was. And to have that moment, to be there to support your teammate,
to support one of your best friends in Kaitlyn Clark, and to have that glimmer of hope there,
and then to have it happen.
So there was a story.
Somebody that was sitting by Kate Martin in the Iowa contingent.
TikToker that follows women's basketball.
And apologies, I forget her name off the top of my head here.
But saw this last night on Twitter.
And she had mentioned they come over to Kate.
Ask her to put down her phone.
And you knew the moment was going to happen.
And you see Gabby Marshall with tears in her eyes, how cool that was. Just the thrill of that moment.
This could be it for Kate Martin. Who knows what she wants to do as it pertains to playing the
game of basketball. You know, she wants to follow in the footsteps of many people in her life. Her dad, a high school football coach.
Her aunt, a coach at the University of Iowa.
Coaching is what she wants to do, and she has said as much.
It's a difficult grind, but she has the temperament.
She has the leadership qualities.
She has everything you look for.
Heck, maybe she's the next Iowa women's basketball coach.
We'll see how her career goes.
But to have that moment, have that opportunity to be able to go to one of the premier programs
and organizations in the WNBA in Las Vegas with the Aces. And if it doesn't work,
to have an opportunity to learn even for a short time with Becky Hammond and that staff,
it's a pretty good thing. Really cool moment. Really enjoyed that one.
I just can't believe how much I enjoyed the WNBA draft.
We got a lot going on this week.
Locked on Hawkeyes.
The Iowa baseball team lost another series over the weekend,
this time at the hands of Ohio State.
We got to dig in.
And now that we came into the season with Iowa baseball,
talking about the potential of them,
not just being an NCAA tournament team,
hosting a regional, maybe hosting a super regional. And now they have work to do just
to make the Big Ten tournament, where only the top eight teams qualify for the Big Ten tournament.
It's scary. The bullpen, though it's been better, has not been good this season.
bullpen, though it's been better, has not been good this season.
The bats have been okay.
Starting pitching, what is happening there?
We came into the season thinking that Iowa had as good of a one-two punch and Brody Breck and Marcus Morgan as anybody in the country.
And it wasn't hyperbolic.
This wasn't just some dork in Iowa saying that.
No, this was people nationwide.
Marcus Morgan about lost his spot in the rotation.
Cade Obermuller maybe has been the best of the rotation.
Brody Breck has been a mess.
Guy that we anticipate is going to be a very high draft pick.
What does it mean for his future?
Marcus Morgan, we thought, also draft draft eligible he was going to be a
relatively high and here we are amazing disappointing and a lot of work to be done now for iowa just to
qualify for the big 10 tournament what a crazy turn of events we got a lot of football as well
with the transfer portal open we got you covered as new names become available we will definitely
pass those along guys that are also entering the portal or potential fits for the University of Iowa.
A lot of, excuse me, football talk.
Plus, of course, the portal happening and the basketball side of things.
Iowa had a visitor yesterday on campus.
The Iowa women get one of the top transfers in the country.
Lucy Olsen coming in.
And how about that? I mean, after what they saw, what Lucy Olsen probably saw on TV in the WNBA draft last
night, with all the Hawkeye love, that might be an easier sell for Lisa Bluter and company
to get Lisa, to get, excuse me, Lucy Olsen to commit to the Iowa Hawkeyes.
And boy, that would be a boon for this program.
