You are Locked On Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day.
Welcome back, Hawkeye Nation, to a bonus episode of the Locked On Hawkeyes Podcast,
your daily podcast covering your Iowa Hawkeyes on the Locked On Sports Network.
If you're tuning in today and you haven't listened to our Wednesday morning episode,
make sure to check that out as well.
That's right, I did two episodes in the same day.
I missed Monday, I wanted to make it up to you, and we have plenty of content to provide.
We also have a great announcement that we're going to drop at the end of this show about
what is going to happen going forward on our Monday morning recap episode of the Locked
On Hawkeyes podcast when we break down that previous weekend's game.
Starting with the Iowa-Purdue game that's happening this Saturday.
So as I said, lots of stuff to cover though.
We're going to kick it off with some of the news and notes that happened today actually.
So some late breaking stuff.
And then we're going to get into the Kirk Ferens press conference.
And some of the other Iowa football players who talked to the media.
And break that down.
And then finally end the show with our three matchups
to watch in the Iowa vs. Purdue game.
Just also a reminder that tomorrow we have a crossover show
with Purdue expert Chris Schoen.
He's a former Purdue alum, works in the Oklahoma Athletic Department,
and is a pretty good, I would say, draft scout at this point.
Loves college football, loves his alma mater
Purdue.
So he is a great guy.
He's going to have a good understanding of what to expect from Purdue coming into this
game.
That'll be our crossover episode hitting you tomorrow.
But let's get into the news though.
We'll start with a couple of the big things.
Penn State's Pat Chambers steps down and that is a really big deal.
There were some allegations that came out earlier in the
summer about Pat Chambers. I don't want to get into all the details there. I don't know enough
to give you all the details there. But the fact that he is stepping down, I mean, he really
turned that Penn State program around. That's a big blow, just purely from a basketball perspective,
right? I don't know all the details of everything else, but purely from a basketball perspective,
that's a huge blow to Penn State. But obviously it seems like they
needed to do what they needed to do. And I definitely understand that. Also back in that
Pennsylvania, Indiana region, the more Eastern part of the big 10 Purdue filed an appeal to
allow Jeff Brom to coach remotely in the game against Iowa. First of all, I don't know how they would do that.
I also think it's a little bit ridiculous.
I understand why Purdue would want to try.
Jeff Brom is the play caller.
They're going to have Brian Brom calling the plays.
He has never called plays before.
That's a huge disadvantage for him.
You can talk about how easy it might be to call plays.
You might know the offensive system, but we've even seen Brian Ferenc do it. And I really appreciate Brian as a,
an offensive coordinator. Sometimes he gets a little bit too cute. Sometimes he gets a little
bit too wrapped up in what is happening in the game. Although I will say, I really love the
three quarterback sneaks in a row. That was tons of fun to watch, but it is a big deal to have
never called plays before. Not even in, you know, it seems like in a kind of a to watch, but it is a big deal to have never called plays before.
Not even in, you know, it seems like in a kind of a wash-up game, Jeff Braum is the play caller, and him not being there could really impact that Purdue performance.
We looked at Alabama last week without Nick Saban.
The spread dropped two and a half points.
Jeff Braum is worth that much, in my opinion, to the Purdue offensive attack.
The defensive attack isn't going to get a downgrade from Jeff not being there,
but the offensive attack, that offensive attack that typically has caused a lot of pain
to Iowa's defense and makes this game very interesting,
could suffer because of him being out.
If he does get that appeal approved, though, and is able to call plays,
that is a big win for the Purdue Boilermakers, so that was interesting to see as well.
In NFL news, Parker Hesse re-signed with the Titans practice squad. That is a big win for the Purdue Boilermakers, so that was interesting to see as well.
In NFL news, Parker Hesse re-signed with the Titans practice squad.
Greg Mabin was ultimately released.
I'm honestly kind of surprised Nick Easley is not on a practice squad and Parker Hesse is,
but that's neither here nor there.
Good for him, good for a great, outstanding Iowa football player having another opportunity with the Titans.
Making a position change is never easy, and the fact that he's getting opportunities means that he's clearly making the progress necessary to at least show him that he deserves another
chance.
And then on the recruiting front, Iowa did extend an offer to Dayton Wayne's 2022 offensive
tackle, Emil Wagner, a four-star offensive tackle who happens to have a brother who played for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Ahmaud Wagner, former basketball player, went to Kentucky, got a little shot in the NFL.
So big stuff there.
Extending an offer to that offensive tackle would be a huge gift for Iowa.
And obviously having that connection is huge as well.
Coming up on segment number two, we're going to get into the Kirk Ferens press conference.
Before we do that, though,
let's talk about what some of the players said.
And I think the big thing I want to talk about,
and I know people are getting tired of talking about this,
but it is a storyline because of what's kind of gone on about it.
But Tyrone Tracy Jr. is going to be kneeling.
It sounds like the plan is not to have the entire team kneel.
They're allowed to do whatever they want.
And before you shut off the show, I want to tell you why this is important.
A, it's awesome to see Iowa allow people to make an individual decision. When everything kind of
came to light, Kirk Ferron said, we're going to do everything as a team, but now he's allowing
it to be an individual decision. And it's also a pivot from what he originally said. Like I said,
it seemed like he was against it before. Then he said it was going to be a team thing. And now he's
allowing individuals to make a decision and the entire team supports that. I think it's a great
step in the right direction. And I think it's really cool that he had a Navy SEAL come in and
actually give his thoughts on what was going on and talk to these players and educate them from
a military standpoint about what kind
of thoughts are from that standpoint. Obviously, Kirk Ferens respects the military very much. I
thought that was really cool. That's why I wanted to talk about it. That's the storyline that is
important to me. Also, lots of praise for Spencer Petras. Big expectations, I think. I mean,
we've seen praise come in left and right. And I don't think it's just, you know, smoke being blowing smoke up Spencer Petras' butt.
I think he truly has taken ownership of this offense.
There's a reason why there wasn't a quarterback competition.
It was his.
It was his job to lose.
He had to really struggle to lose that job.
He's been groomed for this spot.
He is, I honestly think he could be the biggest sleeper on this team.
People are looking at the Iowa football team and questioning what they have at that quarterback position.
I think, given the weapon surrounding him, given Brian Ferencz's new outlook on a running attack,
I believe this could be a huge year for Spencer Petras.
We saw Nate Stanley have some outstanding games early on in his career.
I think Spencer Petras, that floor is where Nate Stanley was
when he first started out, and the ceiling is much, much higher.
I think the accuracy is going to be better,
and it seems like he's a little bit more of a vocal leader,
looking high praise across the board.
Coy Cronk, a guy who just joined the program,
said Petras had a really good camp, and he's really excited for the season
and watching him play and how he's picked up blitzes along the way and along that line with along that line excuse me with coy crunk it was
pretty interesting to get his thoughts on coming to iowa it sounds like you know it wasn't necessarily
he was always destined to come to iowa but once he made the decision to leave indiana it just fit
perfectly coming to iowa and he talked very highly of the system the fact that he's watched the
system a lot when studying game film and the fact that Kirk Ferens is a good honest man that
he can trust I thought that was really cool to hear the grad transfer tackle talk about Kirk
Ferens and the Iowa football program like that but that was some of the news notes and tidbits
from the press conferences for the players coming up on segment number two we're going to be talking
about Kirk Ferensz's press conference.
He gave a lot of good nuggets.
Want to break that down and what it means
coming into the Saturday and in general
for the Iowa football program.
Before I get into that though,
let me tell you about what I like to do
after a long, long day.
For example, today I had to take my dog to the vet
because her tail wouldn't work.
Apparently dogs can pull their tail muscle,
which I did not realize.
I also had to work all day and I've recorded a couple podcasts. because their tail wouldn't work. Apparently, dogs can pull their tail muscle, which I did not realize.
I also had to work all day,
and I recorded a couple podcasts.
So what I do after a long day of just go, go, go,
and feeling like I'm on, on, on,
I just need to chill.
And the best way to chill is with an ice-cold, refreshing Coors Light.
I live in Denver, Colorado.
I know exactly what it means to get fresh Coors Light,
but you can get fresh Coors Light as well,
as cold as the Rockies, and they do an incredible job. I've walked through
that brewery. I've seen their brewing process. I think it is just amazing. And then tasting that
beer, nothing tastes better than an ice cold, refreshing Coors Light after a long day at work.
I remember working concrete after college or not during college for a couple of weeks. And the
thing I wanted more than anything else
after work was just to have an ice cold, refreshing Coors Light to let me chill.
Like I said, Coors Light, mountain cold refreshment made to chill. Coors Light is cold
lager, cold filtered and cold packaged. When I say I want to chill with Coors Light, it's because
Coors Light was literally made to chill. It's what I do. It's what they made it for. It's as crisp
and refreshing as the Colorado Rockies. Perfect for a moment to unwind. So Coors Light is the one I choose when I need to unwind.
So you should choose it too. So when you want to hit reset, reach for that beer that's made to
chill. Get Coors Light in the new look delivered straight to your door at get.coorslight.com.
That's right. You can have Coors Light delivered directly to your door. No need to go to the store, have it shipped to you. Go to get.coorslight.com and as always celebrate responsibly. And when I sit down
with that Coors Light, sometimes I just need something to pick me up for the day or even just
during the day, you know, before I get to that point, the point of a Coors Light after work,
sometimes during a long day like today, I need to pick meme-up. And I go to my favorite protein bar.
It tastes just like a candy bar.
That's right.
I'm talking about Bilt Bar.
Bilt Bar is the protein bar that tastes like a candy bar.
And it's back and it's better than ever.
They had 12 original flavors that were absolutely delicious.
They've added six brand new flavors.
Caramel brownie, cookies and cream, cherry barcia, lemon almond cheesecake, carrot cake, and apple almond crisp.
My favorite part about it
is not just that it packs a punch in the taste department, but it packs a punch in the health
department as well. That's right. These delicious protein bars that taste like candy bars are also
incredibly healthy for you. For example, cookies and cream, which is my favorite 17 grams of
protein in a tiny little bar, 130 calories, four grams of sugar, and 4 grams of net carbs.
You can't get that anywhere else, especially with that kind of taste and delivery in the
flavor department.
And right now, if you go to BuiltBar.com, use promo code LOCKEDON and you'll get 20%
off your next order.

And as I said, Kirk Ferentz has a press conference every single week.
We're going to be breaking that down every single week on the show.
And I am going to be giving you that announcement later on in the show about what's coming on our Monday morning recap episode every single week.
It is a great surprise.
I'm really excited about what's going to be coming on the show.
But Kirk Ferentz is going to be doing a press conference every single week.
And we're going to be breaking it down on the show.
Because he does a great job of giving tidbits that we can kind of analyze and dissect for each week.
The first one I want to touch on is the offensive line and the fact that there is always going to be a little bit of movement on the offensive line.
If there's no injuries, Iowa still likes to rotate guys in and out to get them a little bit more experience, so they're not just coming in green for the very first time as a starter.
So just because Cody Ink and Justin Britt, Mark Kallenberger,
those guys are not listed as starters,
doesn't mean they're not going to get a lot of playing time,
and that's actually what he kind of talked about as well.
He said, you'll probably see some rotation going on
because I think those guys are so close,
there's not really a reason not to play some of these guys some multiple reps.
So I love seeing that. I love the fact that Iowa likes to play some of these guys, some multiple reps. So I love
seeing that. I love the fact that Iowa likes to rotate offensive linemen in and out. I don't think
you see that very often in a lot of programs, but again, Iowa has so much talent there. You want to
get these guys in there. It also gives some of the other big men a little chance to take a breather
here and there, and it gets them acclimated to the game pace. That way, if they are thrusted into a
starting role, they're able to handle it. And also, that was really funny when Kirk Ferens threw some shade
at LSU. When talking about David Bell and Rondell Moore, he said these were the two best wide
receivers or the best wide receiver duo that Iowa has ever faced or that he has ever faced.
Then he said, wait a second, that's not true. We faced LSU with Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis
Landry. And he said, but the problem was they couldn't get the ball to them,
which I thought was hilarious.
Anyone remembers LSU pre, you know, the, wow, I'm drawing a blank on his name.
This is Joe Burrow.
Holy crap, that was tough, guys.
Joe Burrow.
Before Joe Burrow, LSU's quarterback situation was never really that good.
They might have top recruits, but they just couldn't really do a lot. Joe Brady and Joe Burrow did a fantastic job of building up that quarterback position at LSU's quarterback situation was never really that good. They might have top recruits, but they just couldn't really do a lot.
Joe Brady and Joe Burrow did a fantastic job of building up that quarterback position at LSU.
He did, though, mention the fact that because of Purdue's passing attack,
because of David Bell and Rondell Moore,
we're likely to see Iowa go to five and even six defensive backs, hit that dime package up.
We talked about it on yesterday's show as well.
That cash position is going to be coming out in full force the very first game of the season. And he even talked about going to the
dime look where maybe a Nick Neiman is the only linebacker on the field. And we have six DBs,
which in my opinion would probably be Matt Hankins. It would probably be a Dane Belton,
Jack Corner, Riley Moss, Julius Brents, and either Terry Roberts or Sebastian Castro.
Those are my two guesses, or even Kayvon Merriweather.
Those are kind of the three guys in line for that sixth DB role,
kind of depending on whether they want to go three safeties or four corners in that look.
But definitely going to be exciting to watch Iowa kind of reveal a little bit more of a
unique defensive presence because the past couple years,
their approach just hasn't really worked
trying to stop the Purdue Boilermakers. Every single year, they've really torched them.
Although most of the time, it's been over the top. Last year, they did a good job of just
working it with David Bell, 10, 12, 13 yards every single time. The one thing about Purdue games,
I was not afraid to move guys around, pull guys out. I believe it was the Purdue game two years ago when Riley Moss and Julius Brents kind of struggled.
That's when Matt Hankins came back in a couple years before that.
Manny Rungba wasn't doing well.
They put Michael Ojemudia in, wasn't doing well, put Matt Hankins in.
So we're going to see this defense be constantly evolving just in that first game.
They're getting a really tough look going against that Purdue team. One of the other things I thought was really interesting from an offensive
standpoint, Kirk made a comment about the weapons that Spencer Petras had at his disposal and
mentioned the fact that they only have two tight ends. He said, our tight ends are doing a nice job.
I wish we had two more, but we got two that have played and done a really good job. Now that's not
a knock on the tight ends currently in the program, but it does speak to the lack of depth that they have. And we
talked about that on the tight end preview. There's a ton of talent here, but not a lot of,
not a lot of experience. So, um, outside of, you know, a Sean buyer and a Sam Laporta, there's not,
there's no experience there. So it'll be interesting to see who steps up in that third
tight end role. And it sounds like, you know like he didn't provide a lot more clarity on that situation,
but I'm sure we'll see it come out in full force. We also could see this be kind of an evolution of
the Iowa offense where they're going to be playing three and four receivers a lot more and move away
from the two tight end sets until they can get some of those other tight ends developed and ready
to play Big Ten football.
Also, in addition to the, you know, we've talked a lot about the adversity that Iowa has faced over the last couple months,
and you see uninformed and poor journalism by analysts who say,
oh, Iowa's going to suck because of the adversity they face.
If you've listened to any of the players over the last couple months, you've listened to Kirk Ferentz,
If you've listened to any of the players over the last couple months,
you've listened to Kirk Ferentz, they all truly feel like this program is stronger and closer than it's ever been before.
I've talked to a couple parents, I've talked to a couple of the players,
and I've talked to a couple of the recruits coming in,
and they've all spoken glowingly about how incredible this program has been
and how close they have gotten and how much more connected they are as a team
because of what's happened, not in spite of what's happened, because of what's happened.
And Kirk Ferens basically said the same thing.
And he says he's very confident because they brought in really good men to do that.
They know the kind of players they're bringing in.
Those kind of players can handle this and can step up and rise.
And I think sometimes when adversity hits you, you either lay down or you step up and
you do something about it. And I think Iowa has shown in previous seasons that when there's
adversity, they know how to step up and perform well. Also, he mentioned Purdue and the fact that
they're getting new coordinators. So it's tough to analyze game film because you're not sure
exactly what to expect. And then when you factor in the fact that Jeff Brum is not going to be
calling plays, that makes it even a little bit you factor in the fact that Jeff Brum is not going to be calling plays,
that makes it even a little bit more different.
You would expect Brian Brown to be able to call plays relatively similarly, but you're
not going to get that exactly.
That experience is not going to be there.
So trying to, first game of the season, understand what to expect from these new coordinators
is quite an interesting challenge for Iowa.
And again, I caution against jumping to conclusions after the first half.
Iowa, this is a really important game, more so than a lot of other season openers,
is going to have to really pride themselves on making great halftime adjustments
because they're not going to completely get what the calls are going to be
from an offensive and defensive standpoint.
They're going to be making even more adjustments between drives
because of what they see on the field.
So that was some of the takeaways I had from the Kirk Ferens press conference.
Coming up on segment number three, I'm going to drop that surprise about what is happening
on our Monday morning recap shows, and then we're going to break down the key matchups
in this game, Iowa versus Purdue, before closing out the show.
Alright, we are back for our third and our final segment of this bonus episode on this Iowa verse Purdue before closing out the show. All right.
We are back for our third and our final segment of this bonus episode on this
Wednesday afternoon of the lockdown Hawkeyes podcast.
And as I said,
I have a surprise coming up.
You know what?
I guess I'll drop it now.
You've been listening to the last two segments.
I appreciate you all tuning in the listenership and going forward on Monday
mornings.
I felt like,
you know,
I do.
I think I do a good job. I think it'd be wrong of me to be not, you know, I do. I think I do a good job.
I think it'd be wrong of me to be not, you know, not be confident in myself.
I think I do a good job of analyzing games postgame and breaking down kind of the
the intricacies of what happened.
But I feel like a former Iowa football player would be better and probably helpful
and give you a new perspective.
So I'm bringing on Matt Vandenberg, former Iowa Hawkeye wide receiver.
He has been a guest of the show before.
He's going to be hopping on every single Monday for a full show every Monday morning,
breaking down the Iowa Hawkeyes game that weekend.
I'm super excited about it.
Matt's a great guy.
He's honestly a guy who's really encouraged me to go for it.
We had a conversation after I interviewed him about a year ago, year and a half ago,
and some of what he said really spoke to me and was pretty inspirational.
I'm pretty excited, though, to have him on weekly covering the Iowa game of the previous weekend.
He'll be joining every single Monday, so make sure to follow that as we get into the season.
And let's get into those matchups, though.
Starting with, you know, we talked about Matt Vandenberg being a wide receiver.
Let's talk about the wide receivers because Purdue has Rondell Moore and David Bell. And what has impressed me about Purdue
is it doesn't matter if they don't have those guys, they still find a way to chuck the ball
all over the field. But both of those guys are studs, both freshmen, all Americans.
Those two guys alone are going to give our relatively new secondary quite a challenge.
I know the secondary is excited for that opportunity.
It's a game to basically put up or shut up.
I mean, it's an opportunity to go against the best.
Show what you can do.
For a Matt Hankins, it's a game that puts you on the map.
You want to line up with Rondell Moore, a first-round pick, and shut him down?
That's the kind of game that puts you on a map.
That's the kind of game that gets you going in a momentous season.
Julius Brents, Riley Moss, Dane Belton,
you want to match up on a Ronda Moore, David Bell, and shut them down?
That's a huge boost for their confidence and for their seasons as well.
This is going to be the toughest challenge Iowa has the entire season
from a wide receiver perspective.
In addition to those two guys, though,
they have two other guys to watch out for.
Jared Sparks, former quarterback who moved over to wide receiver.
Redshirt Sr. with 15 starts.
And then Milton Wright, a former four-star who's had five starts last year.
This wide receiver group is deep.
We talked about Iowa having one of the best wide receiver units in the nation.
I would argue Purdue's better.
That's how good they are.
I would say Iowa's probably number two or number three in the Big Ten.
And I would say Purdue is without a doubt number one.
Two freshman All-Americans in Rondell Moore, David Bell, and then Jared Sparks and Milton Wright.
Any of those guys can torch a secondary.
They got four of them.
So it's going to be a big challenge to see what our secondary can do to stop them.
I don't expect them to stop them.
But if they can just slow them down, Iowa wins this game.
That is the matchup to watch.
That is the number one matchup in my opinion.
Number two, George Karlaftis, a true freshman last year,
had a fantastic freshman year for an injured Purdue defense.
Last year, 17 tackles for a loss, 7.5 sacks.
He's a true sophomore this year, big guy, 270 pounds.
He's going to be going up against Coy Cronk and Aleric Jackson,
both four-year starters. That is going to be going up against Coy Cronk and Aleric Jackson, both four-year starters.
That is going to be a battle to watch to see where he lines up and can they handle him.
Both guys, Coy Cronk and Aleric Jackson, coming off injury-plagued seasons.
Coy Cronk just coming off a big injury in general.
Aleric Jackson coming off an injury-plagued season.
Can they handle the test that they're getting in Week 1 against George Karlaftis?
That's going to be a huge matchup to watch because you want to keep Spencer Petras clean.
And your first game, you want to keep that young, that new quarterback clean and give him time in the pocket.
And it's really going to come down to the tackles because, you know, Lorenzo Neal is
a fantastic interior player.
I actually feel like the interior offensive line is going to be pretty darn good this
year, especially led by Tyler Linderbaum and a couple guys who have had, you know,
Cole Banward, Kyler Schott,
those are guys who have performed really well last year.
And I thought Cole Banward, not necessarily last year,
but the year previously,
those are guys that I think can handle that interior piece.
But can we stop the edge pressure?
And also, can we get to the edge in the run game
and stop him from, you know, doing that?
Can the tackles, can Aleric Jackson and Koi Kronk,
can they run block against a George Kalafdis?
That'll be fun to watch as well.
17 tackles for a loss, that's a lot of tackles to get in the backfield.
So he's impacting the run game and the pass game,
and we need to stop him in order for our offense to go.
And then in the other phase of the game, special teams.
We have what could be considered the best special teams matchup in the country
this year. Amir Smith-Marset has an opportunity to break records from a kick return standpoint.
He is dynamic. Rondell Moore is probably the only guy in the country that can compete with
Amir Smith-Marset, and one could argue is even more dynamic than Amir Smith-Marset. Even though
the numbers don't necessarily match up to what Smith-Marset has done. Rondell Moore is a fantastic return man, both in the kick return game and the punt return game.
So it's going to be a lot of fun.
Special teams is an interesting unit that not a lot of fans of other teams care about.
But when you're an Iowa football fan, you've got to care about the special teams.
And Iowa's special teams unit is typically pretty good,
especially when they can actually get the punting game going,
which was a sore spot for years before years before we got Michael Sleep Dalton. This year, we have
Torrey Taylor taking over. Should be a pretty solid presence at that punter position, and it
will be needed because we have Rondell Moore back at the punt return man. He's going to need to sky
those punts and give his team time to get down there to stop Rondell Moore. On the flip side,
Purdue is going to be punting to Max Cooper.
Their punters sucked last year.
Let's just call it what it is.
Call a spade a spade.
Their punters were Iowa's punters from a couple years ago.
Max Cooper, not exactly a dynamic return man, but a consistent return man.
Would be interesting to see if he can break a few there. But Amir Smith-Marset, this is his make or break year.
He's shown a lot of potential.
Last year was a fantastic season, but this is the year to put himself on the map
for good with the NFL scouts, because if he can show that he can dominate special teams,
last year he came on strong late in the year,
didn't have nearly as much explosive plays in the special teams unit early in the season,
but if he can come on strong early in the season this year, that would be huge for an Iowa football team, giving that football
team some great field position.
I'm excited to watch this.
Special teams is going to be a lot of fun to watch, which is not something people typically
say, but when you're watching Iowa vs. Purdue and Amir Smith-Marset vs. Rondell Moore,
that is exactly what we're going to get.
A great special teams battle.
Those are my three key matchups for the game.
They'll let me know what your key matchups are by tweeting at me at lockdown.
Iowa.
You can also message me on Instagram or Facebook as always Hawkeye nation.
It's my pride.
It is my, you're sorry.
It's my, uh, it gives me great pride.
I should say to be able to deliver you content every single day, covering your Iowa Hawkeyes.
I'm excited to do it all throughout the football season.
I'm really excited about the addition of Matt Vandenberg to the podcast as well
every single Monday, giving you that insider,
that Iowa Hawkeye athlete perspective about what is going on.
So make sure to subscribe wherever you downloaded this podcast at
so you can get those episodes downloaded directly to your phone.
And make sure to tune in tomorrow to our crossover episode
