You are Locked On Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day.
Welcome Hawkeye Nation to a Tuesday morning episode of the Locked On Hawkeyes Podcast,
your daily podcast covering your Iowa Hawkeyes on the Locked On Sports Network.
As always, I am your host, Andrew Wade.
Excited to be back for another episode of the show, even if it's coming off a loss.
If you didn't get a chance to check out our Monday morning recap with Matt that we actually
dropped on Sunday, we just felt like it was right to drop it a little bit earlier, given
the amount of unrest at Hawkeye Nation.
If you didn't get a chance to check that out, I highly recommend you doing that.
It is a new segment or new show.
We've been airing on the last two weeks.
It's going to go on the rest of the football season.
We've been getting a lot of great feedback and honestly,
Matt's insight is just so well received and such a,
a nice thing to be adding to the show.
So definitely recommend you checking that out on today's show though.
We are going to continue with some of our recurring Tuesday segments.
We've been doing an NFL recap every single Tuesday.
We're going to change it up a little bit.
We're not going to break down the entire NFL.
We're actually going to talk to the host of the Locked On Chargers about Desmond King,
why they traded him, and then we're going to give you a little bit of insight from the
host of Locked On Titans.
You can follow him at Tic Tac Titans.
We're going to talk about why that was such a good trade from a Titan perspective as well. So that'll be coming up on segment number
three of the show. Before we get into that though, we are going to be breaking down the depth chart,
a few new changes to that coming up, and then also get into a little bit more about Amir Smith-Marset
and Spencer Petras. There was two new things I wanted to bring up. I thought it was important,
so we're going to be covering that on segment number two. If you are tuning in for the first
time, just a reminder, we are a daily show. That's right. If you like the show today,
we're back tomorrow, we're back Thursday, and we're back on Friday. So make sure to check us
out by subscribing wherever you downloaded this podcast out, and you can get it delivered directly
to your smart device. That's right. Not that hard to have this episode delivered directly to your smart device. That's right, not that hard to have this episode delivered directly
to your smart device. But let's jump into the show and we're going to touch on the depth chart.
So as expected, Amir Smith-Marset was suspended one game. He is not on the depth chart for this
game against Michigan State coming up this week. So we're going to see a bit of changes there.
At wide receiver though, we didn't see anything anyone new added to the depth chart.
Just Tyrone Tracy is going to be starting opposite of Brandon Smith.
And then we have Tyrone Tracy just backing up Brandon Smith on the other side,
which really just means right now I think there's a mix of a couple of guys who could really be in there.
I think a guy to watch out for is Charlie Jones, Max Cooper, another guy to watch out for, Desmond Hudson.
Those are just a couple of guys off the top of the dome that we should be watching out for coming Charlie Jones, Max Cooper, another guy to watch out for, Desmond Hudson. Those are just
a couple guys off the top of the dome that we should be watching out for coming into the game
this upcoming week. But again, Tyrone Tracy going to get the start in place of Amir Smith-Marset.
We have Brandon Smith on the other side and Nico Reganey playing in the slot. My guess is going
against Michigan State, we're going to see a lot of three wide, but we are going to get some four
and five wide receiver sets as we saw against Northwestern, but my guess is they're going to stick with a
three wide, one tight end, and a Tyler Goodson or Makai Sargent or Ivory Kelly Martin in the back.
And keep in mind, I mean, Tyler Goodson is a guy you can spread out. You can put him out wide,
so let's utilize that a little bit more to maybe get two running backs in there. Makai Sargent in
the backfield, Tyler Goodson have a motioned out back. So there's going to be a little bit more intricacies you might see from Brian Ferentz
if he doesn't want to dig into that wide receiver depth chart.
Also replacing Amir Smith-Marset as the kickoff returner is going to be Charlie Jones as well.
I've been really impressed with him as a punt returner.
We talked about it with Matt Vandenberg on yesterday's show.
Didn't catch one of the punts the way you probably should catch a punt,
but overall has been doing a fantastic job of, first and foremost, securing the ball,
and secondly, getting yards after he does secure the ball.
We've missed that the last couple years.
I've been really impressed by seeing Charlie Jones, former walk-on from Buffalo,
had a solid freshman year at Buffalo.
He's been doing really well at that punt returner position.
We're going to see him at kickoff return as well.
Also back in the starting lineup, Seth Benson.
He got the start this past week despite not being on the depth chart initially.
Nick Neiman is going to be back at weak side with Justin Jacobs backing him up.
And Coy Cronk is back at starting right tackle after struggling quite a bit
and getting benched in a game where we saw Northwestern really do a great job of forcing Iowa to run the ball. Iowa couldn't run the ball well.
Northwestern's safeties were coming up, and what they were doing was dropping eight back,
rushing three, and they were still getting pressure on Spencer Petras with those three
defensive linemen rushing. that is a bad state
because now you have eight guys back there covering your, at the most, five guys going out for a route.
Spencer Petras isn't exactly the most mobile guy.
He's not going to run for a first down typically.
So that was definitely a struggle.
It would be great to see Koi Kronk get into a little bit better game shape
and be able to handle it a little bit better.
I mean, when we think about bringing in a grad transfer with three years of starting experience,
now granted last year he was out all year with a broken ankle,
you still expect there to be a level of consistency, maybe not at the Tristan Wirfs level,
but this is a guy who was talked about as a day two pick two years ago.
Coming into his senior year, people were talking about him as a third rounder, a fourth two pick two years ago coming into his senior year people were talking about him as a third rounder a fourth round pick that this is an NFL quality guy we bring him in as a grad transfer
and he's really been struggling the last two weeks he needs to get it back and going because we need
to be able to protect Spencer Petras we're going to talk about Spencer Petras on segment number two
but that is very important we cannot expect to be successful if we cannot keep our quarterback
upright and pressure free as much as possible. We even talked about it last year. I mean, just
last year, Nate Stanley, not the world's greatest quarterback, but he was so much better without
pressure. And that can really be said for any, any player, right? But I thought, you know,
Nate Stanley did a fantastic job whenever he wasn't pressured, and that needs to continue now because they're rushing three
and still getting a lot of pressure on Spencer Petras, so not ideal there.
Now, the big change, one of the big things I want to cover,
is Kayvon Merriweather getting into the first game of the season.
He got five tackles against Northwestern, laid the wood on a guy.
We've seen some of these safeties really pop off on some of the wide receivers He got five tackles against Northwestern, laid the wood on a guy.
We've seen some of these safeties really pop off on some of the wide receivers and running backs coming up the middle.
Kayvon Merriweather just absolutely destroyed a guy in the Northwestern game.
He is now listed as the starting safety.
Dane Belton is listed as the backup, and Dane Belton is listed as the starting cash.
So that, to me, is a very interesting development.
What does that mean going forward?
It depends on what the formation is going to be.
Now think about this.
If we're running at 4-3, does Dane Belton start?
Is he truly the safety?
Or is Cable Merriweather?
I'll be watching out for that against Michigan State.
I, to be honest, haven't got a chance to watch a ton of tape on Michigan State yet.
However, I'm going to be doing that this week to kind of get a feel for what they're running from an offensive perspective.
And then we're also going to be doing a crossover episode on Thursday with the host of Locked
On Spartans, Will Hunter.
We're going to be talking to him about Michigan State and what to expect from them schematically
on the offensive side of the ball and the defensive side of the ball, especially under
a new head coach.
Now, depending on what they do there, that will give me a little bit more insight as to why we're seeing this change up at the secondary spot. So that is the
changes on the depth chart. That is what's been broken down on the depth chart. As we get more
information, we'll make sure to give that to you as well. As a reminder, Jack Campbell still not
available yet, still recovering. Austin Schulte still not available as well. As a reminder, Jack Campbell still not available, yet still recovering.
Austin Schulte still not available as well.
And Amir Smith-Marset is suspended.
But other than that, not a lot of major changes, just a few interesting developments given the way the game went against Northwestern.
Coming up on segment number two, we're going to talk a little bit more about Amir Smith-Marset and other things we might have saw that maybe aren't the most positive things.
We're not talking about the OWI.
We already talked about that on yesterday's show.
We'll obviously cover it a little bit more, but there was something else that we noticed
that I wanted to make sure we pointed out on the show that is a little bit concerning
to me about Amir Smith-Marset.
We're also going to talk about Spencer Petras and whether or not it's acceptable to be a
little bit frustrated with the fact that he is overthrowing so many people and being pretty inconsistent in the passing attack.
We're going to cover that on segment number two.
Before we get into that, though, I don't know about you, but I'm always on the go.
I host this podcast.
I also work a full-time job in consulting.
I'm a husband.
I have two dogs.
I have a cat.
I'm an avid workout person.
I train a lot for triathlons, Ironmans, etc.
So I'm always on the go. It's tough sometimes to settle down and relax. But when I do, when I get
a chance to just say, you know what, Andrew, I'm going to unwind. I get a ice-cold Coors Light
because that is the only beer out there that's literally made to chill, which is what I need to
do sometimes after constantly go, go, going.
Coors Light is a mountain cold refreshment made to chill.
It's cold lagered, cold filtered, and cold packaged.
It's literally made to chill.
It's as crisp and refreshing as the Colorado Rockies.
Perfect for a moment on one.
I don't know about you, but have you ever had a Coors Light after summiting a 14er?
There is nothing better than an ice cold Coors Light at the top of a mountain.
It is freaking amazing.
Highly recommend you do it.
Should be on one of your bucket list items if you ever get to Colorado and do that.
Coors Light is the one I choose though and I need to unwind.
So when you want to hit reset, reach for the beer that is made to chill.
Get Coors Light in the new look delivered straight to your door at get.coorslight.com.
That's right.
You can have Coors Light delivered directly to your door at get.coorslight.com. That's right, you can have Coors Light delivered directly to your door at get.coorslight.com.
As always, remember to celebrate responsibly.
This message is brought to you by Coors Light,
a part of the Coors Brewing Company, Golden, Colorado.
All right, we are back for segment number two
of the Locked On Hawkeyes podcast,
and we're covering the Amir Smith-Marset news
and some Spencer Petras information.
And again, I thought a little bit more about, really, I thought a lot about why are fans
so frustrated with Spencer Petras?
And then you see a lot of people, a lot of media members come out and say he's only started
two games.
I think there's a nice little mix in the middle, right?
I don't believe that we should just bench Spencer Petras, but I also don't agree with
the sentiment of he's only been given
two games, let him work these things out.
I mean, I do, but there's a little bit more to why people are frustrated than I think
media members are giving folks credit for.
And I want to make sure I break that down.
I try to be in the middle somewhere, right?
And that's kind of where I've landed on this.
I want to cover that and why it's such a big deal.
But let's start with the Amir Smith-Marset stuff.
So as you probably know at this point, unless you live under a rock, Amir Smith-Marset was
arrested for an OWI.
Not only was he driving intoxicated, he was driving almost double the speed limit.
Not only was he intoxicated, he was reckless, irresponsible, dangerous.
He was suspended for one game by the Iowa football team.
That is consistent with previous penalties.
team. That is consistent with previous penalties. Kirk Ferens did leave it open for potential longer suspension, given the fact he has to go through the Iowa Code of Conduct policy and all
that kind of stuff. I think it's mostly based on the successful completion of what is needed there.
But outside of that, I was informed to take a look at a recent video posted by the Iowa Hawkeye Athletic
Department about the football team and the swarm they do. If you've watched any games,
after the game is over, they walk off the field holding hands, helmets on, and there was one
player who wasn't. It was Amir Smith-Marset. He was pouting, helmet off, not a part of the team.
And I have not talked to Amir Smith-Marset. I have not talked to Amir Smith-Marset.
I have not spoken to Amir Smith-Marset.
I don't like to talk badly about players.
I want to inform you and give you the facts
and then give you a little bit of my opinion.
Again, that can be construed as talking bad,
but I think it's important just to give you kind of my thoughts on this.
That's what my job is, right?
So the fact that we have seen him in the
past be a little bit pouty, we saw him in game one just look almost disinterested when he wasn't
getting the ball. We saw him pout a little bit after not getting that ball in the deep ball.
Spencer Petras wasn't able to hit him in the game against Northwestern, walking out the field
without his teammates. The OWI, which is a very selfish and stupid decision.
We've heard in the past about Amir Smith-Marset and trying to coach him up
and trying to teach him and the difficulties and the fact that maybe sometimes
he isn't as focused as he needs to be on the task at hand.
I mean, these are all concerns from me, from an outsider,
looking in at the Iowa football program. I think when you're looking at this, though, so that to me is a hand. I mean, these are all concerns from me, from an outsider looking in at the Iowa football program.
I think when you're looking at this, though,
that to me is a concern. Do
whatever you want with that.
Not ideal, obviously.
Looking at it from a football
perspective, though, Amir Smith-Marset is a big
loss. He's a fantastic athlete.
But in talking to
a few guys who are a little
bit more knowledgeable of the program,
a little bit more in the program, I should say.
I'm never going to give away my sources and whatnot.
But a lot of people think that Brandon Smith is, without a doubt, the better receiver.
And I do agree with that.
I mean, Brandon Smith is a better route runner.
He's a more consistent pass catcher.
He's a wide receiver.
The comparison I heard from one person was, you know,
Amir Smith-Marset is a kick returner playing wide receiver. The comparison I heard from one person was, you know, Amir Smith-Marset is a kick
returner playing wide receiver. Now that might get you to the NFL, but he needs to be a little
bit more refined. We saw him last year when Brandon Smith went down, put up some great numbers. We
need to see that consistency this year. We need to see a more refined and polished wide receiver.
He's a senior at this point. You expect more from Amir Smith-Narset. That being
said, I'm really excited to see Tyrone Tracy take over in this game. I'm excited to see his
playmaking abilities. He has great yak ability. A guy who I think has a better route tree as well.
Not necessarily the Amir Smith-Narset, but a good route tree who needs a little bit more
refinement on the route running, but has solid hands and great yak ability. Nico Regani, we're
going to see him as well.
Again, needs to improve his hands, but a fantastic fundamental route runner at that slot position.
And Brandon Smith, again, just an absolute stud.
We saw him catch that amazing fade pass against Northwestern.
That's the kind of catches he's been making the last four years.
We've heard about this since he started on the Iowa football program.
So transitioning, though, to the guy who threw Brandon Smith that ball, Spencer Petras.
Now, I thought a little bit more about this.
There's a lot of people that are pissed off, people talking about starting a Deuce Hogan over Spencer Petras,
or not really as many people talking to Alex Padilla,
but starting someone over Spencer Petras, maybe benching him for a series or whatnot.
I have a couple thoughts on this.
First and foremost, we do need to give him
a bit more time. He's only his second game into the Iowa football program. Now that being said,
it's okay for us to be frustrated with his production. He is struggling. He is looking
inconsistent. He's not looking off his first read. Now some of that has to do with pressure.
He's getting a lot of pressure on him, but he's also not realizing when to float the ball versus when to fire it in. He's struggling with the speed and the velocity of the
ball he's throwing. He's struggling with ball placement. Those are big fundamental issues that
are costing, it's costing Iowa football games. So it's right to question whether or not he's
the appropriate quarterback. And when you look at media members talking about, well, he's only had
two games. He's inexperienced. The spring game, you know, well, he's only had two games.
He's inexperienced.
The spring game, he didn't have spring practice as much to get his timing down.
I completely agree with that.
That being said, a lot of younger quarterbacks have come in and done really well.
And so for Spencer Petras, he's now in his third year in the program.
You look across the state at Brock Purdy at Iowa State.
He played pretty darn well as a true freshman for a less talented Iowa State team.
Now, he's had his struggles this year, but overall, he's been pretty consistent
since the day he began starting at quarterback for Iowa State.
To me, he came in as a three-star recruit, not very highly recruited.
You look across the board, some of those five-star recruits,
Trevor Lawrence comes in as a freshman and lights it up.
Tua comes in in the championship game and brings Alabama back to a win.
It's okay for us to be frustrated by quarterbacks not being able to play right away
because they've had so many more snaps.
This is not the 80s where quarterbacks are playing three other sports
and aren't really getting the year-round development
and need a lot of work coming into college.
These guys are going to so many camps.
They're playing so much football.
They are coming in more developed.
It's okay to expect more out of these quarterbacks,
and I think it's okay to expect more out of Spencer Petras.
Now, I do agree we need to give him a couple more
games to see if he can get under him, especially given the way the season is going. But if he
continues to struggle, I think it's okay to question whether or not there's another guy
that we could be bringing in. Now, that being said, I see a lot of people talking about Deuce
Hogan, and there's a lot of hype surrounding Deuce Hogan. But let's not forget, Deuce ain't on that
depth chart. It's Alex Padilla. If Spencer
Petras gets benched, it's Alex Padilla coming in. And that's not a concern. I'm just letting you
know, if you think Deuce Hogan is the next guy, it ain't it right now. Deuce Hogan hasn't won that
spot. He has only been in camp for a couple months. He has not gotten nearly the amount of
reps as an Alex Padilla has. So if they were to bench a Spencer Petras and say, yo, you're just not cutting it, it's going to be Alex Padilla first. Then we're going to go
through that if we wanted to get to a Deuce Hogan, but I do think we need to give him a game or two.
I just feel like it's okay for us to be frustrated by it as outsiders looking in. You look at a lot
of quarterbacks around the college bowl landscape who are having more success as a younger quarterback
with less talent on their team.
And here we are, Iowa, we're losing games by a combined five points. And a lot of that can be,
you know, not all of it, but a decent chunk can be blamed on the fact that we are having very
inconsistent and some would say porous quarterback play. So it's okay to question it. That is my
thoughts though on Spencer Petras. Coming up on segment number three, we're going to change it up
a bit, change it up a little bit again, and get into our interview with Lockdown Chargers talking
about Desmond King and the trade that happened why they decided to get rid of him and what was
the value going back to the Titans and why that is a good move for the Titans that'll be all be
coming up on segment number three before we get into that though it is I have long days I mean
today I'm recording. I've
worked for eight hours. I'm doing this podcast. I worked out for two hours before I got even into
work. Sometimes I just need a little pick-me-up. And the thing I turn to for that pick-me-up is
BuiltGo. That's right. The makers of BuiltBar are back with another fantastic product and it's
BuiltGo. BuiltGo comes in 1.5 ounce packages so you can fit it in your briefcase, your golf bag,
or in your pocket on your way to the gym.
It's like five-hour energy without the same crash feeling, plus it's all natural, so it's
better for your body.
It's like drinking a monster drink with a third of the caffeine and even better results.
I use it for long days.
I also use it as a nice pre-workout because it has a lot of fantastic nutritional value
to it as well.
I highly recommend you check out BiltGo.
Right now, they come in three delicious flavors, peanut butter, honey, chocolate, coconut,
and my favorite, which is chocolate mint.
It has a little bit of a spicy kick to the end, which I do really enjoy,
especially early in the mornings when I'm going to a 5 a.m. workout.
Nothing gets me going like a BiltGo.

Let's go!
Alright, we are
back for segment number three of the Lockdown
Hawkeyes podcast. And as I said, every
Tuesday, we usually break down all the results across the NFL
for all of our Iowa Hawkeye alums.
Today we're changing it up a little bit with the trade deadline.
Today, as you're listening to this since it is dropping on Tuesday,
Desmond King, former Iowa Hawkeye All-American,
former Los Angeles Charger,
has been traded to the Tennessee Titans for a sixth round
draft pick.
In just a few moments, we're going to get the host of Locked on Chargers on the show
to talk about what happened and why that is happening.
David from the Locked on Chargers podcast, he's going to be hopping on in just a few
moments.
But before we get into that, a few reactions from Tic Tac Titans.
You can follow him at Tic Tac Titans, itans, host of the Locked On Titans
podcast. You're going to hear a lot about Iowa Hawkeyes
on there. He's a huge fan of Imani Hooker,
probably a huge fan of Desmond King, especially based off what
I'm seeing. I reached out to him, though, to get a little bit
more of a sense for why Tennessee
decided to make this move.
He said, we've had some terrible play
from the current slot corner.
With Desmond King being only 26,
he's played pretty well this year. Didn't play well only 26, he's played pretty well this year.
Didn't play well last year, but he played pretty well this year.
And if he plays well, we can get him,
we can resign him now.
And the fact that we got him for just a 6th round pick
is fantastic.
Now, if he gets too expensive after the season,
we can get a comp pick for that.
That's what the host of the Locked on Titans is saying,
and it makes sense.
So they trade a 6th round pick for him. That's what the host of the Locked on Titans is saying, and it makes sense. They trade a 6th round pick for him.
They have 3 of them, which
they also are getting an extra 3rd for
Jack Conklin signing as
a comp as well, so they have plenty of 6th round
picks. They traded a 6th round
pick for essentially a flyer.
Desmond King might take over and do fantastic.
If he does, they can try to resign
him. If he doesn't do well,
it's not a huge waste of a pick
if he does do well and they are unable to resign him they're likely going to get a comp pick that's
either a fourth or fifth rounder depending on what that contract is to be signed now slot corners are
in high demand a good slot corner of very much in high demand especially a good slot corner who can
play punt return so the move makes sense from a titan's perspective let's get the analysis though
from the chargers perspective that's going to be coming up right now.
I am joined here now by John Kegley of the Locked On Chargers. John, it's great having you in,
obviously under some interesting circumstances, Iowa, all American, former Iowa, all American
cornerback Desmond King has officially been traded to the Tennessee Titans for a sixth round draft pick
former fifth rounder became an all pro I think from an Iowa perspective you see on the outskirts
you know obviously a fantastic player but over the last couple years maybe it hasn't been all roses so
break it down for me what has happened over the last year that led to Desmond King getting traded
well thanks for having me on it's a honor to be on a college podcast.
This is really cool to talk about college sports with somebody.
And as far as Desmond King goes, I'd have to say,
it was probably something along the lines of past year.
He probably thinks like he wants to be a star and his playing time went down.
So he was trying to make it more about himself than the team
and I know Anthony Lynn is not about having guys like that that think they're everything he wants
team locker room atmosphere and the years before he was getting in trouble at practice and stuff
probably thinking he didn't get enough playing time I mean if you look at his starts every year
he like starts four games starts three games, starts eight games. He's basically not the full-time starter, and he's just the slot corner on this team, basically.
He wants more playing time for that kind of stuff.
So I'm thinking he started thinking he deserves more playing time, and it started boiling over with the coaches.
And eventually they just said, we're not going to win this money game, so let's trade him and get something for him,
because he's about to be a free agent after this year.
And the chargers are known for letting their players go without letting,
getting anything for them. So you're letting a star player go for nothing.
So at least they got six round pick really.
Yeah. So, I mean,
it's interesting because you're kind of taking the the short-term approach
with getting a draft pick, because from a Tennessee perspective,
I actually was chatting with Tic Tac Titans.
You can find them on, on Twitter, the Locked On Titans host.
And he was like, you know what, we gave up a six-round pick.
And if we're able to keep Desmond King, fantastic.
But if not, we're likely to get a compensatory pick that's even greater than a six-round pick.
So what are your thoughts on that?
You get a six-round pick this year.
But what are your thoughts on if you were able to let him go,
I mean, maybe get a fourth or fifth-round pick in a year from now?
Well, it depends on where the Chargers are or fifth round pick in a year from now. Well, I mean,
it depends on where the chargers are and where the Titans are a year from now.
Cause if the chargers are in the middle of rebuilding and they lose a bunch of
guys in that fourth or fifth round pick could come in handy,
but the Titans are winning a lot as well.
Then you're getting the back end of the fourth and fifth round.
So is there going to be really many guys for you to get around there?
Are you going to probably trade that pick as well?
There's a lot of ways you can go with it,
but I'm just glad we got something for him because we've let a lot of guys go
over the years. You can name Darren Sproles. You can name Vincent Jackson.
You can go down the list of really good players. The Charters have let go,
even like Eric Weddle. And in in the end you got nothing for these
guys when you know it was like the last year of the contract or they wanted to go somewhere else
you could have at least traded them and got something even a six-round pick is something
because especially when you're a team full of young players that's rebuilding that's another
young body that you could probably find a diamond in the rough with Desmond King was a fifth-round
pick you don't always expect a fifth-round pick to good, but here's Desmond King getting a 90 yard pick six against the Cowboys, getting you sacks. He's also basically you're
all around like Swiss army knife when it comes to DBs. So that's a lot of money that you could have,
so to say at a fifth round pick and you get a six round pick, you could probably get another
diamond in the rough. Absolutely, man. So definitely a nice long-term perspective from a Chargers perspective.
But you brought in Desmond King
and he has a fantastic couple of years for Los Angeles.
But then this season you go out and get Chris Harris Jr.
who basically takes over for Desmond King.
Was the writing on the wall earlier on,
I mean, when they signed Chris Harris Jr.,
was the expectation initially
that maybe Desmond King slides outside or maybe Chris Harris slides outside?
Chris Harris was not happy playing outside in Denver.
So what was the expectation when you signed Chris Harris?
What was the expectation for Desmond King at that point?
And did he just not live up to it, which is also part of the reason why he was getting reduced snap counts and not as much playing time?
counts and not as much playing time well i would say it was more of chris harris bumped up the secondary which is something that we needed and desmond king would probably be used in other spots
like there was rumors that he'd become a safety there was rumors that he'd place him outside
we couldn't really it was all speculation really you couldn't really tell where he was going to go
because because of covid you didn't have training camp and stuff i always go to all the charger training camp practices
to study the guys and see what they're doing with them and you couldn't do that this year
you literally just had to sit there and guess and listen to words of anthony lynn at a press
conference you gotta take the five words anthony lynn said and make whatever you could out of it
to find your solutions to this kind of stuff and with desmond, we were thinking he's probably going to be spread around
or he could possibly get traded.
There was rumors he was going to get traded to the Vikings
for an offensive lineman at one point.
So there was a lot of rumors that he was going to get traded
before the season even started.
But then once the season started and he was on the team, we thought,
okay, we're going to see him a lot as maybe fill in for Chris Harris
who needs a rest or fill in at safety if we need it
or maybe bring in like a dime or a nickel package and Desmond King's playing something else out there there's a
lot of roles that we thought he was going to have but he hasn't had much playing time definitely
man so it seems like Desmond King just sort of wore out his welcome maybe he'll get a fresh start
in Tennessee playing alongside former Iowa Hawkeye safety Imani Hooker John I appreciate you hopping

All right, and that concludes the show today.
One thing I did want to bring up, George Kittle out for eight weeks
with a broken foot, left the game yesterday with an injury.
It is reported that he has a broken foot and is out eight weeks,
which is super unfortunate for the San Francisco 49ers and George Kittle, America's favorite tight end.
But that will do it for our show today.
I appreciate you all tuning in.
