I thank God I was born on the good arms of the Midwest, and not on the battlefields of Europe.
It's a time of panic, and it's intercepted! It's picked off, run away!
Intercepted by Marty Hooker! Pick six! Eight seconds into the game!
Buffen sets up deep in the pocket, goes down the field for Smith!
Oh! He got it! Smith!
Decks down 85 yards.
Iowa.
Touchdown, 10.
Taking a shot in the end zone.
It is caught.
No offense.
Touchdown.
That's either one or you have it.
Go ahead and three.
Yes.
Two-point lead for the Hawkeyes podcast,
your daily podcast covering your Iowa Hawkeyes on the Locked On Sports Network.
As always, I am your host, Andrew Wade, and today's episode is brought to you by rockauto.com.
Amazing selection, reliably low prices, all the parts your car will ever need.

And I am excited to be back.
It has been exactly four weeks since we recorded our last show.
I know it was a bit abrupt.
I didn't really give any indication that we were going to stop airing shows.
One thing led to another, and here we are a month later.
But I think overall the break was good for me to get away, kind of focus on some things I had going on at home,
some things I had going on at work, and some other personal items before jumping back into the show.
I wanted to make sure that if I'm coming back, I'm giving you the content you deserve and the content you want and not just rambling on like I have been known to do in the
past. So I want to make sure I'm coming back with an even better show. And for those of you who've
been around for a long time listening to the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast, you know, every once
in a while, every probably seven, eight months, I take a little bit of a break. I come back with
a little bit more energy, a little bit, you know, more ideas, more ideas on how to improve the show. So I hope the ones that are joining for the first time you enjoy this
episode, the ones who have been with me for a while, I hope you stick around. We have some
great stuff coming up. We do have some interviews that we're going to be dropping this week. And
next week, we have two recruits in the class of 2021 that are going to be coming on the show
on a Wednesday, really excited about that episode. And then we also have Iowa's funniest woman in sports, Lucy Rodin.
She's going to be hopping on the show as well.
We'll probably have that episode airing probably a week from now,
from the day you're listening to this now.
And lots of stuff has happened in the last month
since I kind of stopped posting a lot on Twitter
and since I stopped really posting
episodes.
So we're going to try to get through all that.
We're going to try to take an analytical approach to a lot of it.
So it might be news that happened a week ago, for example, the Big Ten schedule, but we're
going to give the analysis of what that means kind of going forward and what our thoughts
are.
On today's episode, though, we're going to break down a list of hot topics and things
that have really popped up over the last week and kind of quickly dive into those.
Going to try to make that a new segment every Monday, just hitting on the hot topics.
Not really diving deep, but that'll give us a basis for what we're going to cover the rest of the week as we kind of dive into these things more and more, especially as we get more news.
If we do have football, if we don't have football, we'll try to make sure we're covering that.
news. If we do have football, if we don't have football, we'll try to make sure we're covering that. We're also going to break down the press conference that happened on Friday with Kirk,
Javon Colbert, and Tyler Linderbaum and Brandon Smith had an hour long interview with the media
or a press conference with the media learned a lot of great information. Big thing I took away
from the guys, the players is that you know, they are really excited to get you know, get to playing
football. They feel like the team is stronger than ever.
They feel like there's been some really great discussion,
and there has been change already happening.
So really enjoy hearing that coming out of the program,
some positivity coming out.
So great stuff there.
But let's jump in to the hot topics.
The first one, I don't like to talk about other podcasts unless I am giving them kudos,
because I think it's really important to shine light on the other people doing some really great work in the Iowa Hawkeye
community. One of the podcasts I've always been very fond of is the washed up walk ons. If you
want information coming directly from former players, getting some of that insight, there's
no better podcast than them. Obviously, I think we have different analytical approaches, we have
different verbiage styles, we have different speaking styles. So you're going to get different,
definitely different content and a different presentation. But I highly recommend if you
like this podcast, you should have checked out washed up walk ons by now. But this week,
there was a bit this weekend, really, Drake Kulik, former for fullback for the Iowa Hawkeyes
had some interesting things to say on Twitter.
When you've listened to their shows, especially as they talked about some of the stuff coming out of the program the last couple months, they have been very vocal about, we stand
with our former teammates, but some of these things are not necessarily true.
Two things kind of came out.
Jack Kallenberger, if you remember his story, kind of being harassed in the Iowa program,
calling him Simple Jack because he had a learning disability.
Drake called him a baby because he cried about his name.
And then also told another former Iowa football player that he has been canceled
and the cancel culture has essentially been canceled because that guy was
pretty adamant about some of the stuff happening within the Iowa football
program.
So I,
some interesting stuff there.
I don't want to get into it.
I don't know kind of what's going on.
I do think,
especially the Jack Kallenberger tweet was within poor taste.
I'll be interested to see how they address it on the shows going forward,
but definitely interesting to see that,
especially after, you know, they've had an opportunity to interview Jordan Lomax and James Daniels and those kind of guys and talk about what's going on.
And then to see some of this come out is obviously frustrating, I guess you could say.
Some award lists that happened and that popped up.
Obviously, these yearly award lists are really just trying to find guys who have started last year who could be good this next year. These lists are long,
and later on in the week we're going to break down the possibility of these guys winning it,
and who could actually win some of these awards, and who they would have to beat out. But wanted
to quickly hit on three different awards that released their nominees. The Doak Walker,
He hit on three different awards that released their nominees.
The Doak Walker, Makai Sargent, and Tyler Goodson, both Doak Walker Award nominees.
The Mackey Award, we got Sam Laporta.
That just speaks volumes how big of a deal he's going to be in this Iowa football program considering he didn't even start until the end of the season and he is just a true freshman.
So love seeing him show up on the radar here and get some love.
And then for the Blitnikoff Award, Amir Smith-Marset, as we probably expected, is on that award list as well.
Like I said, we'll be breaking down that information later on in the week and what guys also could be finding themselves on those lists and what the opportunities are for them to potentially win.
And again, these are not that important right now.
They're just kind of an idea for what guys are kind of on people's watch list going forward,
just to give you a sense of who to look at.
But people kind of come out of nowhere at times,
and those are always important to watch those guys as well.
Broderick Binns is moving along in the program.
He is no longer the director of player development.
He is the executive director of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
This is something that Kirk talked a little bit about.
I think it's really important that he does take over that role
and to help foster growth within the program,
especially among the black athletes.
I think that will be really huge for that program.
In the interim, they are not going to fill his director of football player development
role right away.
They'll be filling it with several folks on the board, in the program.
And then Sam Brinks, former Iowa football player, defensive tackle from a couple years
ago, will be, sounds like Kirk said, he'll be taking on most of the responsibilities,
and especially with those first-year guys.
So love seeing that as well.
A couple of basketball things I want to hop into,
but I want to make sure I do get an opportunity to talk about one of our sponsors for the show today.
Great sponsor, a place I go to a lot for my car part needs.
With the ever-increasing numbers of makes and models,
it's basically impossible to stock all the parts you need in a traditional store
in front. Why endure often pointless and seemingly intimidating questioning? For example,
what kind of Subaru do you have? It can be frustrating, especially if you're not a car
person. And not only that, they probably don't have all the car parts at that store that you're
typically used to going to. But if you have a computer, you have access to rockauto.com at home and it can save you money in your pocket.
rockauto.com is a family business serving auto parts customers online for 20 years. Go to
rockauto.com to shop for auto and body parts from hundreds of manufacturers. They have literally
everything on their website, whether it and also for any type of car, whether it's an,
you know, oldie that you're trying to fix up or a brand new car that you just bought.
The rockauto.com catalog is unique
and remarkably easy to navigate.
Quickly see all the parts available for your vehicle
and choose the brand, specifications,
and prices you prefer.
And as I mentioned, best of all,
prices at rockauto.com are always reliably low
and the same for professionals versus do-it-yourselfers.
Why spend up to twice as much for the same parts at a traditional storefront?
Go to rockauto.com right now and see all the parts available for your car, truck, or just a vehicle.
In general, write locked on in their how-did-you-hear-about-us box so they know we sent you.
Amazing selection.
Reliably low prices.
All the parts your car will ever need.
rockauto.com
All right, so we are into segment two and we have not finished our hot topics.
So I'm going to walk through those and then we're going to hop into the football press conference news.
A couple of things.
Jared Uthoff signed with the Washington Wizards.
This is a guy who I'm honestly shocked he hasn't gotten more NBA opportunities.
He has definitely taken a non-traditional path.
He did not want to be drafted
so he could control his future.
Got a 10-day contract with the Mavericks
late in his rookie season.
Has bounced around the NBA G League,
putting up fantastic numbers.
Played overseas for a year,
putting up great numbers there as well.
And now he is heading to the bubble
to play for the Washington Wizards.
This is a great opportunity to showcase his talents.
The Wizards are a terrible defensive team.
I think they were the worst rated defensive team in the NBA leading into the shutdown.
They're a terrible team in general.
They're 24 and 40, and they do not have their two best players in John Wall and Bradley Beal.
So this is a great chance for Jared Uthoff to show what he can do
and potentially parlay that into a future contract
for an NBA team,
especially on the defensive side.
I'm honestly shocked he hasn't gotten an opportunity.
He's a guy that fits the mold
of what NBA teams are looking for these days.
A 3 and D guy, great size,
can defend multiple positions,
shoots the ball well,
handles the ball well,
and gets active on the offensive glass. I don't know why teams do not line up to get this guy on
your bench, but hopefully he does well and we'll be tracking his progress as the NBA season starts
up. Tyler Cook is also going to be in the bubble. So that is two Iowa Hawkeyes that are playing in
the NBA right now. Tyler Cook is going to be with the Nuggets this season in the bubble.
And interesting enough, just found out that he is going to be wearing, you know, they're going to
be utilizing their opportunity to show the things they believe in and to show what they support.
And he's going to be actually wearing a jersey with the words Black Lives Matter on it. So
super exciting stuff to see Tyler Cook kind of stand up for what he believes in as well.
He's been getting some hate from Iowa Hawkeye fans. I think, to be honest, that's ridiculous.
Whether or not you agree or disagree with him, please do not be jumping in players mentions and
hating on them for whatever reason. And I think if you've been listening to the show, you know how I
feel about what is going on. I firmly support, you know, our players of color and the people of color and our brothers of color
who are struggling with
inequality. I've seen
firsthand within my family, being
a second generation Hispanic, about how
they can be mistreated too.
Definitely support the heck
out of what he is, the causes that he's
supporting and all that good stuff.
Obviously, the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast and the
Lockdown Sports Network supports the Black Lives Matter movement as well.
Also on the football front, our last thing for Hot Topics,
actually probably second to last, the Phil Steele Top 25 has Iowa at number 23.
And as I've said for some of the other things,
we're going to be breaking down that news on a future show,
but wanted to at least address the Hot Top topics before jumping into the big thing today.
And Jack Horner is back with the Iowa football team after suffering that boating accident down in the Ozarks.
He is back with the team.
Sounds like he is doing well as well.
So really excited to see him make a lot of progress.
Obviously still be caring about his friend as well, who lost the
use of his legs. So scary stuff nonetheless, and whether or not you're a football player,
wishing the best of luck and the quickest recoveries for those two and their families.
So let's jump into some of the content for the day though. So I know a little bit more hot topics
today than typical, but that will change, obviously,
as we start having more shows.
And we're going to be doing, I forgot to mention this, but our shows are going to be Monday,
Wednesdays, Fridays, no exceptions.
We might add Tuesdays and Thursday shows if there is something that really important pops
up.
We also might be doing some video type of things, maybe creating a YouTube channel or
posting some video clips on Twitter of some of our interviews that we're doing.
So really, really kind of cool stuff. Like I said, we actually have two of the 2021 recruits coming on Jennings
Dunker and Zach tweet. He's going to be coming on the show as well. They came on actually
together and we did a video conference and really great guys. So I'd be posting some
of that stuff on Twitter. That'll be dropping on Wednesday. But let's hop into the stuff.
Like I said, the big thing, the press conference happened on Friday.
And I think this is kind of in place of media days.
We usually have Big Ten media days at this time.
But clearly, that is not the case right now with everything happening.
And the Big Ten did change to a 10-game conference schedule.
If we have an opportunity to, we'll get to that
today. Otherwise, we'll break down what that means for Iowa on Thursday. But the press conference,
I'm going to quickly kind of go through a few things we learned, and then we're going to take
a quick break and then break down what that means for the program. Kirk did say, you know, there is
some COVID within the program. Symptoms have been relatively minor and no hospitalizations. Sounds like they're taking a lot of precautions. Some of the things he mentioned for that is
before going into the program, everyone was tested. They have daily health questionnaires.
Temperatures are being gauged literally every time someone enters the building.
He actually mentioned that this was the third time he's had his temperature taken that day.
Groups are spaced out a bit so they can limit the traffic and the flow.
And there are no more meals inside the building. All are takeout meals. Now, as far as strength
and conditioning, typically they would group people by position and by size, which makes sense.
But now they're putting players into pods that are based on their social network. So the guys
who live together, uh, a lot, a lot of interesting stuff on that. But, um, so the guys who are living together, they're trying to keep those guys,
um, together in the weight room and have other guys come in at other times. Typically in the
past, the facility has been open in the afternoon for guys to do seven on seven stuff and, and just
get their workouts in during the summer. Um, their voluntary type of stuff this year has been shut
down for the most part, but it just reopened. So some
interesting stuff. Obviously, it sounds like they're really taking the COVID pandemic serious
in there. Kirk also expressed the fact that he does not want to play spring football, but that
still is a possibility. And that they're moving forward as if they have a 10 game conference
schedule on the docket. And they're moving forward as if they're going to be in camp August 7th.
So they're moving along as if they're going to be in camp August 7th. So they're,
they're, they're moving along as if they're going to have football. We obviously don't know
if they are going to have football, who knows what's actually going to happen with that.
Lots of crazy stuff has been going on. And I think the big news is the fact that they have
had people test positive and they've done a really great job of limiting the outbreak of that. And
Tyler Linderbaum, when he got up on
the mic, he also talked about the fact that he feels like players are being smarter about, you
know, not, not going in if they're sick, and understanding that the whole idea of contract
tracing, or contact tracing, excuse me, and where they are getting people sick out of where they're
getting sick from so that we can eliminate that or limit that as much as possible within the
football program. Certainly doesn't seem like we've had as big of an outbreak as possible, especially when you have
one or two people with the way COVID spreads, who knows how big that could have gotten. So
great to see Iowa doing a good job managing that. That gives me hope going forward. Obviously,
it depends though on how everyone else does. The CDC just came out with a recommendation
or with basically a guidance that if everyone wore a mask for four to eight weeks, we could shut coronavirus down. I'll be
completely honest. I just spent the last week in Iowa visiting my father and my sister and my niece
and no one wore a mask. I live in Denver now and everyone wears a mask. It's a public,
it's a state mandate that you must wear a mask in public you have to
at iowa i didn't feel like anyone really cared i remember walking to jethro's with the mask on and
i was the only one there i wasn't going to leave because i did want to see my dad my dad doesn't
care about mask i tried convincing him otherwise but um still it's important to wear a mask and
if we want this to stop and want football to be played, we need to have people wearing masks so we can eliminate the coronavirus as much as possible, as quickly as possible.
But I could talk about that for a long time.
Coming up, though, on segment number three, I'm going to round out the last few thoughts on the press conference and then might have a chance to get into a little bit of the Big Ten schedule before closing out the show. So we're going to take a quick break and give you a few messages from our sponsors
before touching on some of the things we've learned about that.
You know, the council that's coming up to talk about some of the racial issues
that are within the Iowa football program
and what some of the players said as well
when they had an opportunity to speak to the media.
to speak to the media.
We are back for our third and final segment of the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast.
Today, your daily show covering the Iowa Hawkeyes
on the Lockdown Sports Network.
And like I said before, we took a quick break.
We're going to round out the show by covering
the rest of the press conference
and potentially hopping into the Big Ten schedule.
A couple things that Kirk also talked about,
the Hush Blackwell investigation nearing the end.
We should be getting results soon.
They've conducted over 100 interviews.
That'll be very interesting to see what comes out of that.
Could be some big shakeups.
Could be just some recommendations.
Who actually knows?
It sounds like a lot of it's focused probably on Brian Ferentz, a little bit on Seth Wallace, and clearly on the weight program and what happened within
that. Also, the team has had some really great discussions as a group. Recently, they had a one
hour discussion just simply geared on the national anthem. Kirk has made it very clear that whatever
they decide, they're doing it as a team. And at this point, they are not at a consensus about what they want to do,
but he does feel like they are moving in the right direction,
really doing a great job of communicating among the team.
So that is good to hear.
Javon Colbert also said a similar thing, that they're not all the way there,
but they are having great discussions as well.
As far as the council that was formed,
Kirk is not ready to release those 10 guys that are on that council, but he did say they've already
met four to five times. It's players from the 1970s all the way up to recent graduates. No longer is
Mike Daniels going to be the head of that. He has some family stuff that he needs to make sure he's
there for. So Dave Porter is kind of leading, former offensive lineman is going to be leading that council.
So nevertheless, exciting stuff to see what that council is able to do
and to talk about and to decide.
It sounds like not just within the council,
but within the program in general,
Iowa has been taking a really deep, long look about what they do.
And one of the big things that Kirk said was that
there were no concerns really about how practice was ran, but mostly just the policies within the program and trying to determine what are the things that Iowa emphasizes that are not important and what should be modified versus what are the things they emphasize that truly are important to the success of the program.
Basically, he said, you know, the frivolous stuff can go.
He even mentioned, you know, Twitter, for example.
He's clearly wrong on that.
He said, I wanted to protect my players.
There's 110 guys in the locker room that would disagree with my original policy on Twitter.
He's gone away with that.
I personally think it's great.
I love seeing the players being able to talk on Twitter and talk through what is going on.
At some point, they have to be able to learn.
I think Iowa already has it,
you know, outside of some of the stuff that needs to be changed, they do have a good
program in place for helping players be mature in the right situations. It sounds like some of
that stuff was not appropriate, but the stuff that is appropriate, I think we'll be able to
deal with any concerns in regards to Twitter. So great stuff there. Got a chance to talk to
three of the players,
Jamon Colbert, Brandon Smith, and Tyler Linderbaum.
All seem to be doing really well.
They're really encouraged by the progress of the team,
and they feel like these meetings and what has been happening
is bringing this team closer.
Brandon Smith got a couple questions on quarterbacks.
Sounds like he's actually worked out with all the quarterbacks,
including Deuce, who's pretty fresh on campus.
He did say Spencer Petras is a natural leader, a little bit more vocal than Nate Stanley.
And he's really excited about him as well.
Tyler Linderbaum had nothing but good things to say about Tristan Wirfs.
They asked him a couple of times about him just because, you know, they have so much familiarity with each other.
Also said he's willing to be the team leader if he needs to be.
If that's what makes the team successful, he is there for the team.
And he's just really excited to move forward.
Also said he understands that he doesn't know what it's like to feel what his black teammates are feeling,
considering he is a white guy from Solon, Iowa.
But that he supports them and he's there for them and he wants their voices heard.
And he's really impressed with their strength and courage in speaking up.
So, again, Iowa bringing three very important guys within the program to speak.
Thought they all three did a really great job,
and it's really great to be able to hear from a few more players in the Iowa football program.
Obviously love to any opportunity we can to get some time with those players is fantastic.
All right, so I'm going to jump into the big 10 schedule, moving to 10 days.
I'm going to talk a little bit about what this could mean going forward. First of all, to me,
this is just the next step in the direction of not having college football in the fall.
I personally don't understand how 10 games makes that much of a difference.
I think if you eliminate, you limit it down conference games, there's doesn't really do a
lot. If you add a conference game from a coronavirus standpoint,
you're basically just pushing it out two weeks.
But does that really help?
I don't think two weeks is that big of a difference, but maybe it does.
But I do think they're trying to figure out any way they can to keep football this year.
As far as Iowa's concerned, it helps and it hurts them.
Iowa has a really tough conference
schedule. They're breaking in a quarterback who hasn't started a game before. They have a few new
guys in defense, basically a whole new defensive line, and they're not going to have the warm-up
games against UNI and Northern Illinois. They no longer have those. They also don't have the
rivalry game against Iowa State, so now we have to deal with two sections of the state pretending
like they would have beaten us this year.
But they no longer have those warm-up games to get into the Big Ten schedule.
That being said, if Iowa does well in the conference schedule,
and I think they have the talent to, it's just a matter of whether they can get things going quickly.
Not having the non-conference schedule actually helps them
because the Big Ten conference is so strong.
If they do well, that conference schedule actually helped them. It'll
be interesting to see how some of the independent schools though, handle this and whether that's
even feasible. Notre Dame only plays a non-conference schedule. Does that mean that
maybe they can look at joining the Big Ten in the future? What does that mean for a program like
that? I mean, Notre Dame would make so much sense to be in the Big Ten. They've always made
sense to be in the Big Ten, but obviously they want to have the money that comes with being an
independent team and keep some of their traditional rivalries and play. But it could be interesting
to see how this plays out long term as well. Again, I think moving to 10 games does make
sense, I guess, but it's just one step to moving in the direction of canceling like the Ivy League
has done. They moved their season to spring. I think that is going to be more realistic and less,
again, as you know, the CDC says we wear our mask and we can shut this thing down.
There's still hope, though, for some reason that fans in the stadium, sounds like there's a seating
plan arrangement coming in late July. So in the next week or so, we should hear more on that.
And I was going to do some analysis on what team I thought Iowa would
get with that 10th conference game. I cannot imagine they change anything up with what they
have. They would just add an additional game. It makes it a little bit easier, obviously,
depending on scheduling arrangements. But as I was getting ready to do that,
I noticed that Chad Lysakow had already put together some really great information on that.
So I want to give him some credit. He thinks that based off of, you know, who Iowa plays this year, who Iowa plays in the future,
and what games are available when he thinks that Iowa is going to be playing Maryland or what at
Maryland. So not the best addition. But if you can get Maryland early on in the season,
that would be an opportunity to once again, a relatively warm-up game, a relative
warm-up game if you could.
He also thinks Illinois would have Michigan, Minnesota would add Indiana, Nebraska would
add Michigan State, Northwest would add Rutgers, that would be a crap show of a game, Purdue
would add Ohio State, and Wisconsin would add Penn State, that would be a ton of fun
to watch.
So that'll be interesting to see.
It sounds like they haven't actually determined what that means yet from a scheduling perspective.
I mean, that news is relatively fresh, so as we get that information, we'll definitely interesting to see. It sounds like they haven't actually determined what that means yet from a scheduling perspective. I mean, that news is relatively fresh.
So as we get that information, we'll definitely let you know.
But right now, it sounds like Iowa starts their season at Minnesota.
That is going to be a hostile environment if there are fans in the crowd.
If there's not fans in the crowd, that would be a lot easier.
I am not as impressed with the Minnesota team.
I think they do have some really great parts. I think P.J. Fleck is a fantastic coach, but it could be worse starting the season
off. You could be going to Wisconsin or you could be playing Ohio State right away, but they get
Minnesota. Obviously, I'd rather have Rutgers or something, but nevertheless, that's what happens.
But we'll see if Iowa does get their 10th Big Ten conference schedule game added earlier in the season and see what the Big Ten does ultimately decide with that.
But that'll do it for our show today, our Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast.
Again, I apologize for the month delay, but I think you're going to be really excited
to see the changes we make going forward with the content, the research we have going on
to make sure we're providing you the best content in the Iowa Hawkeye market
and also some of the stuff we're going to be doing on social media.
We were doing really well there for a bit.
