Starting point is 00:00:00 The leaders are set for Iowa football in 2006, and today we're breaking down what the new Hawkeye Leadership Council says about this team, this locker room, and the season ahead. You are Locked on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Hey, welcome in. I'm Trent Condon, and this is the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast, your daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast.
Starting point is 00:00:35 Glad to have you board. with us here today. We got a bunch of topics to get into. We're going to talk a little bit later on, a potential new Hawkeye beer, but we know about the swarm ale, potentially another partner partnering up at a chance for you to help out the funds of Iowa athletics by drinking beer. That sounds pretty good. We'll also be joined by David Eicholt from Hawkeye Insider.com. We'll talk to David about a myriad of different topics, including a look at the point guard recruiting, how things are going on that front. The Tony Diaz hype isn't real, and we will talk some Iowa football along with the kickoff times that were announced the other day.
Starting point is 00:01:08 But we begin with another announcement from Thursday as the new leadership council has been announced for the upcoming football season. And this is something that has been in the works for a number of years now. Kirk Ferrence putting together a group of players that form this committee when things are going poorly, when things are going well, these are the people, the leaders, the people that are talked to the most and really trying to find out the nuts and bolts of what's happening inside the locker room. It is something that has been, I believe, very effective.
Starting point is 00:01:34 And one thing we definitely have to talk about when it comes to leadership is, I've said it before, I don't know a coach anywhere that talks about leadership more than Kirk Ferrence. And this has been something that has been the spine, the backbone of this Iowa football program throughout the time. We hear about the great stories, the great things that need to happen in order for Iowa to be successful, those guys that have run the course, have stayed the pace. And finally, as a junior, as a senior breakthrough, get a starting out. opportunity, turn themselves into all Big Ten players. That is something that is incredibly important, the buildup factor that Iowa has year in,
Starting point is 00:02:11 in year out. And it goes hand in hand with this leadership and keeping guys engaged and keeping guys involved. So going through the list, I think the first thing that jumps off the page to me is that both quarterbacks competing for the starting job are listed on the leadership council. You have both Hank Brown, the junior quarterback, and then the sophomore. In fact, the only sophomore that is listed is Jeremy Hackclinsky. So that was definitely one that stood out there, thought maybe is this going to lead to us when we found out who this leadership council was going to be if only one guy was there?
Starting point is 00:02:41 Was that a nugget potentially of who's going to take the starting job? No, if we don't get that, it's going to be both guys that are on the leadership council. I did mention Hecklinsky as a sophomore. There is one other sophomore on the list, and that's Cam Buffington. And the hype train, we'll talk about Tony Diaz a little bit later at the wide receiver position. But Cam Buffington, boy, this spring and his emergence here. And we started to hear it more and more as the season progressed last year. Of course, he was out there playing special teams.
Starting point is 00:03:09 But I thought a lot of us going into spring football thought, Jaden Montgomery coming back after taking over the role of season ago at middle linebacker. He was almost entrenched there. And maybe it would be Preston Reese and Cam Buffington, fighting for that other spot on the other side on the outside. That doesn't seem to be the case. Cam Buffington, I think, is going to be the guy at middle linebacker. A middle linebacker, obviously you look the tutelage that you're going to get at the linebacker spot
Starting point is 00:03:36 and what the coaching staff does there year and year out. But coupled with just how great middle linebacker has been here over the last decade plus for Iowa and the high level stars that we've seen from the Jay Higgins of the world going back before him, Jack Campbell. This has been a spot where we've seen a lot of high-end talent and to have a sophomore takeover to that role, I think tells you a lot about Cam Buffington. Some other guys that are also listed in here, juniors, got Trevor Loughke, Zach Lutmer out of the junior class, Kate Piper and Reese Fander Z along with Jalen Watson. All those guys make a ton of sense.
Starting point is 00:04:09 Those are the group that have played a bunch to this point in their career. Also some guys that are going to have some decisions, even with eligibility remaining, I believe after this season, I believe Loutk is definitely going to have a decision. Certainly that is going to be the case as well for Kate Piper, who had a choice to come out this year and decided to come back for his junior campaign, his redshirt junior campaign. and with those two guys on the offense line. Of course, Zach Lutmer and what we saw in his emergence this season. And then you have some seniors in there.
Starting point is 00:04:36 Jack Dotsler, the assumed starter at the right tackle position. He battled last year at left tackle. Luke Gaffney, who started this career as a walk-on, he's going to be part of the rotation of the big question market defensive line coming up this season along with Will Hubert, both those guys kind of hand-in-hand together. Deshaun Lee, you talk about leadership. That is one thing you heard a lot from both Phil Parker,
Starting point is 00:04:58 and from Kirk Farrants about him of now taking and embracing that role as a leader in that defensive backfield. They're excited about some of the young talent that is coming up, but having that, and that's been the next step for Deshaun Lee. It definitely sounds like he has that happening. I mentioned Jane and Montgomery earlier, just a consummate team player. He's undersized. He's not a tall guy out there at linebacker by any means, but out there making plays for the Hawkeyes. Kamari Bolton, who I think has a chance to have a special senior year and take his game up to another level.
Starting point is 00:05:28 Michael Mislinsky's also listed there. And maybe this is another potential nugget about him getting that final year of eligibility. Talk to Kirk Farrants a couple of weeks ago. If you're an everyday watcher of Lockdown Hawkeyes, you saw that interview with Kirk from the Polk County Eye Club. And you could see he was perturbed as there's still a waiting decision on Michael Ms. Linsky getting another year of eligibility, a guy that has been just absolutely decimated by injury throughout the course of his career.
Starting point is 00:05:54 He's looking for a six year of eligibility. When he'd take injuries into factor and probably, precedent. Absolutely he should. However, they're waiting yet Trinity and Chambliss. And he didn't mention Chambliss by name, but he talked about the quarterback that had a decision for the NFL and for somehow he got to the front of list. Kirk was definitely upset about that one. Ms. Linsky, though, on this list and fingers crossed because he could be a guy that has another one of those good stories. It is final year of eligibility. Addison Estrangea coming back from injury. We also got some good news from Kirk on that front a couple of weeks back of him coming
Starting point is 00:06:28 back and being healthy and ready to go coming off the Achilles tear from a season ago. Land of Van Kekkrichs, he's going to be in the mix on the other linebacker's spot. That has been a special team stalwart. So that is the group. Hank Brown, Cam Buffington, Jack Dotsler, Luke Gaffney, Jeremy Hecklinsky, Will Hubert, Trevor Loughkech, Deshaunee, Zach Lutmer, Jaden Montgomery, Kamary Moulton, Michael Mislinsky, Addison Osternerz, Kaypeper, Landon, Van Keckritz, Reese Van Gogh, and Jaylon Watson. that is your group of the Leadership Council coming up for this season.
Starting point is 00:07:01 Leadership matters for Iowa football, very young team in comparison to what we are used to, and a lot of new faces also. This group is going to be incredibly important to keep it going and keep this train going down the tracks for Iowa football. Come back on the other side, David Eicholts going to join us from hawkeye insider.com. We'll get David's thoughts on the kickoff times. What Kinnick Stadium is going to be like under the lights for the matchup against SciHawk? We'll talk some Iowa football and get his thoughts on the Tony Diaz hype. Am I going too far?
Starting point is 00:07:31 Am I going too crazy? I've been dup before at the wide receiver position for Iowa. I want to get David's thoughts on that. He has an article up at hawkeye insider.com about that. Plus, we'll talk about the point guard recruiting for Ben McCollum's basketball squad. That's all coming up next year. Locked on Hawkeyes. Starting point is 00:09:54 And let's start with the news from yesterday. We get the kickoff times for the non-conference games. And of course, the big one. Under the Lights Kinnick Stadium, Iowa State, week 2, 630 on NBC. That is going to be a long tailgate. I know for both Hawkeye and Cyclone fans. So we've seen it before. Those night games, they can get a little, little,
Starting point is 00:10:13 blary-eyed in the stands. Yeah, no, there's no doubt about that. I mean, I don't think there'll be one person in the stands that's not pumped full of liquid courage and, you know, irrational confidence, right? That's usually what happens after an elongated tailgate. I like the move. It'll be really interesting on a ton of front because, look, I'm not going to lie to you, Trent.
Starting point is 00:10:36 I think this plays in favor of Iowa, quite frankly. I think you think about an Iowa State team that right now has no idea who they are. Jimmy Rogers doesn't know what he has yet, but that's normal when you have such a program overhaul like they have at this point, right? I think it's going to kind of a welcome to, I don't want to say the big stage, but a new reality check and a new era for that program. It will be really interesting to see Iowa favored early, I believe, by 12 and a half. I won't be surprised it moves a little bit more post-kickoff time, quite frankly.
Starting point is 00:11:10 I'm a little bit upset that there's no 11 a.m. pickoff in the non-conference. I like my morning games because then I get all my work done. I can actually go watch the games at night. But, you know, it's all good. I think it'll be really interesting. And, you know, I've said it for a couple months now and people hate that I'm saying this. I think you'll understand where I'm going with this. It's a must-win game for Iowa.
Starting point is 00:11:33 Yeah. That early in the season, I will put it at that point because you cannot go into that tough conference stretch with the loss in the non-conference. You just can't do it. So we find out a couple of other things, too, and correct me if I'm wrong here, but I think I've nailed this one. We get the home opener against Northern Illinois. That'll be a 315 start time, which is certainly not a traditional start time,
Starting point is 00:11:55 and definitely not on BTN. The streamers, I know they can do things a little bit different. In fact, Iowa State, their home opener will be a noon kickoff. That's ESPN Plus, a little bit easier compared to a TV window when you're on a streamer. But then I also see the game that precedes it on the Big Ten network. Is Ohio State involved? Is that Ohio State who has been whining and complaining about noon-eastern kickoffs for years and years and years? Is this their opportunity where they flex their muscle a little bit and at least got another half-hour tailgating?
Starting point is 00:12:24 Is that why we get 315 as opposed to 230 with the NIU game? I think you've nailed that head on. It's funny too because when you think about, oh, I think wasn't there a couple of years ago? I need to dig back at this. I think there was Kay McNamara's first game. Wasn't that kickoff like 245? Yes. I don't think that was a 230.
Starting point is 00:12:43 I think that was a 245. So those kind of weird start times over the last few years, it seems like it is kind of trending in that direction. But as you mentioned, I mean, with Peacock getting involved with all, I mean, heck, who knows when Netflix is going to get involved at this point, right? I mean, all these other streaming platforms, it'll be really interesting. I don't know if the programs particularly like. them. And I can't help but laugh because I think about the Arkansas AD, you know, putting out
Starting point is 00:13:12 that letter the other day. And you know what my first thought was? Well, Iowa has to go from playing against Ohio State. And in that, it will probably be a late game. I'm envisioning for that one. And then remember, Iowa has to go to the West Coast. And now they play on Friday night. instead of Saturdays they have Michigan, Ohio State, and Washington in that short of the span, I think they're the ones, Trent, who probably have a little bit more right to complain about. But it'll be interesting. And again, I think you think about KF and you think about how Iowa likes to run their programs. What do they love?
Starting point is 00:13:49 They love consistency and sticking to just kind of that tradition and, you know, knowing the program. Those weird start times, we've seen it happen before. They can throw off teams. But again, I mean, Iowa's going to be favored by 30. I don't think there's anything to particularly worry about. It should be okay on that front, no doubt. Well, speaking of scheduling, another part of your beat at Hawkeye Insider is on the women's basketball. And we find out earlier this week that a home and home has been scheduled.
Starting point is 00:14:15 But not just anybody, just the 12-time national champion, Yukon Huskies. What a coup for Jan Jensen. I know Abby does a lot with the scheduling there, not just getting the game as they did last year on a neutral, getting a home-and-home. That's big time. A plus. I mean, you want to stay relevant. You want to stay among the blue blood to college, you know, of a sport. You play against the best, the best. That you, those Yukon teams are ridiculous. I mean, you're talking about the national runner-ups. And, you know, we talked about this few months ago. UCLA was a cream of a different crop. I thought they were that good, especially after what they did against Iowa and that big 10 title. I think I tweed that that's probably the national champion. I'm sure a lot of people thought that too. But this is really exciting. And I know the 20, sixth game will be a big deal. I believe that schedule for November 8th. I think Yukon's Twitter account kind of leaks that. But I'm looking toward that 2027 season, right? Because
Starting point is 00:15:10 if you talk about Iowa making another deep run, yes, there'll be a top 10 team this year preseason, at least top 12, I would say. Next season, I'm going to go on a limb here. I won't be shocked at their top five preseason if they keep the core together. Because you think about this, they'll have a senior Danny Carnegie and Iowa fans will get to know her really quick. a senior chit-chat right, a senior Taylor Stremlow, and a senior Ava Hayden. You have a very senior-led experience squad with multiple years' experience in Jan Jensen's system taking on Yukon in that sort of an atmosphere. I mean, that's going to be a marquee game for probably the entire sport of a non-conference scheduling. It might be one of the best games of the year.
Starting point is 00:15:56 And if you want to talk about challenging those top teams, it's going to be a really. really, really fun early test. And we like, you know, these sort of big games. I know Iowa and Creighton on the men's side. It's still a massive deal. It's not as big of a deal just from a blue blood perspective. But we love great non-conference games. So I applaud both programs for willing to take on the challenge. And I love the home and home idea. Right there with you. I think it's going to be outstanding. And we'll see. This women's basketball team obviously faltered at the end, but the work they did in the portal, they look to be in really good shape. Well, one thing that you have not been doing, I have not been doing is pumping the brakes on the Tony Diaz height train.
Starting point is 00:16:34 You had an article earlier this week at Hawkeye Insider with a new quote in there. Not exactly that we can say the full quote on the air, but Tony Diaz comes in from UT Rio Grande Valley. You see Alabama's involved. He cancels his visit there. He's coming to Iowa. We don't know. And then just as soon as practice started.
Starting point is 00:16:53 In fact, I got a somebody mentioned during workouts that this dude just moves differently. And I was like, okay, we'll see. And then practice starts. And he started hearing some things. And it has not slowed down. He got banged up towards the end of spring practice. But boy, overall, Tony Diaz, we've fallen for this before. I fell for Caleb Brown. Talk about being dead round. I've done this probably too many times in my 25 years of covering this team. I'm buying it again, though. Give me Tony Diaz. What have you heard recently? Yeah, I think there's a couple layers to that one. I think there's two different types of angles you can take on the Caleb Brown versus is Tony Diaz.
Starting point is 00:17:29 The one, Caleb Brown is rightfully, I think he finished the top 75 recruit in his recruiting class. This is a guy who had been recruited since he's probably 13 or 14 years old. Tony Diaz was not recruited very hard. Right?
Starting point is 00:17:41 So if you talk about a guy with a foot foot on his shoulder, he stayed with UT Rio Grande Valley because they were launching a football program. He played an entire year in that program without actually playing a game. And he worked out on his own. Kirk Barents has talked about that. Do you have a guy with a massive chip on his shoulder?
Starting point is 00:17:58 he plays so violently and relentlessly aggressive on those 50-50 balls. And I think you saw a glimpse of it in the all-access spring tape that Iowa Creative Media does the best job in college football, if not top three at least. They're absolutely spectacular. If you have Iowa's media team hyping up a receiver who has not played a single down in the Iowa uniform, I think you have to pay attention to that. He moves differently. I think he's going to need to put it on.
Starting point is 00:18:28 on weight, he touches everything coming his way. And you know what? He has that Iowa receivers just haven't had throughout the past. I don't know how many years spent. There's two things. One, he just has some squagger. Like, you need to have an attitude and a chip on your shoulder if you're going to be a great receiver. It's just a common trend. The second thing, he always believes he's open. And that can be a great thing or a bad thing. And I think for Tony, I think that's going to be a really, really good thing. There's not a path that he does not think he can get. And that's a very powerful tool. He's got the mental approach. Pretty well mastered, I think. So I'm very, very excited. I'm with you. I understand if nobody wants to buy stock in Iowa receivers yet,
Starting point is 00:19:11 I get it, I get it, I get it better than, I would say most people, at least I would think so. I'm buying stock in Tony Diaz, Trent. I'm doing it again. I'm falling for it as well. And come October, hopefully we do not have egg on our face once again. David Eichael joining us from hawkeye insider.com. What other wide receiver, Evan James, the other transferer coming in from the FCS ranks coming in. What have you heard about him? Is he a rotational piece, more a little bit more developmental? What can you tell us about Evan James?
Starting point is 00:19:43 Yeah, I think he's kind of my mystery of the bunch because I'll say that. I think the top two wide receivers right now are Reese Vander Zee and Tony Diaz. I think in that order, but we'll see as the season progresses, wide receivers three through six, man. I mean, I think there's a legitimate competition there. I mean, Dayton Howard's getting in that mix. You know, K.J. Parker was the star of spring. I thought had a couple drops. I thought he really, the way he came back was really, really strong. I think you think about Jerry at Bowie, who I thought was going to transfer this past off season. And correct to him, he looks really strong. He looked really good from what I've heard. But Evan James, I think he's, he kind of reminds me
Starting point is 00:20:22 Jacob Gill. I think he's a possession receiver that's capable of a big play. and he's consistent with his approach and his work. Quick feet catches a lot of different things. And Jacob Gill, again, made a lot of big catches for Iowa. And I think Iowa kind of needs that possession receiver. The big thing for me watching him, he did not obviously participate in the spring open practice. But, you know, he watched by my colleague,
Starting point is 00:20:46 Elliot Clough and I, and I immediately looked over to L.A. And I said, and I mean, respectfully, I'm like, that dude is small. Like you think about the Big Ten Physicality meeting, a linebacker over the middle. And that's something that KF said he's very, very excited about regarding Diaz and a lot of these transfers. They'll be able to get them in their summer nutrition and weight program to really accelerate that growth. Because again, Tony needs to put on his weight too. But I really like Evan James. I can see him being as high as the third option on
Starting point is 00:21:15 this year's team. I'm going to probably put him around fourth right now, maybe four and a half, between that four and five spots. But I do think he'll be an impact player. I still I love Dayton Howard though, man. I think if he can put it all together, I think he could come up with some really big catches for Iowa this season. Could AI help you do more of what you love? Last thing for you, David, David, I called
Starting point is 00:21:40 Hawkeyeinsider.com is the point card recruiting for Ben McCollum's squad. It looks like they're in great shape for the class of 2027 to land a pretty well-regarded guy. There's like six names out there, including potentially a reclassification. That's out there also.
Starting point is 00:21:56 Cain Dowdry feels like kind of the top of the heap, not just in terms of rankings, but watching that dude, he moves in a different way when we're talking about 20 Diaz, moving in a different way. He's like that as a point guard. What can you fill us in about point guard? Because there's just so many names, it feels like, is it first one to take the offer? Or is there more that goes into this when it comes to point guard recruiting? I think there's a lot of layers to this, and it would take longer than I'm probably allowed
Starting point is 00:22:21 as far as this question goes. But I'll say that I do think there's a legitimate, option that if he does reclassify in Iowa gets his commitment, not Daughtry, by the way, I'm talking about, you know, there's rumblings about Davion Thompson out there. He has made the under 18 U.S. team. I think Iowa needs to take him. I think he's absolutely spectacular. He can play the one or two spot.
Starting point is 00:22:44 But I'll tell you what, Cain Daughtry, I'm with you. He's the number one point guard by 24-7 sports in 2027. Michigan is very hard after him. I believe he got offered by Yukon this past weekend, a lot of other places. but he and Ben McCollum, I've really hit it off. And I can tell you, Iowa is near the top, if not the top of that recruitment right now. So I think you have to take a top 50 commit if they want to commit. But at the same time, you know, Cain Doctrie, it's not even just a pipe dream for a talent perspective.
Starting point is 00:23:14 The way when you watch him play and you talk about him moving differently, Trent, you know, Ben McCollum has to be absolutely salivating at the thought of him running his offense. Right. And it's one of those things to where Iowa right now has a luxury. They have great backup plans. But there's a lot of layers and monies involved. I mean, there's so many different levels to this. But I think given what Iowa's had in point guard in recent years, if you're an Iowa fan and you land a top five point guard in the class of 2027,
Starting point is 00:23:43 you trust Ben McCollum and you need to be absolutely thrilled with it. Whoever it may be. But yes, Daughtry is the number one target, I would say. There he is. David I called. David, thank you for your time. Enjoy it. And now what's next for you?
Starting point is 00:23:56 You got to figure out your internet. Is that what's going on? Did I see that on Twitter? Oh, dude, it's been really bad. I don't want to call out the company. If you really care that much, you can go to my Twitter. But it's been a brutal, like three or four days. I don't even want to look at how much data my hot spots been eaten.
Starting point is 00:24:10 Oh, yeah. It's tough. But you know what? Maybe we'll get some crap back. We'll just push through it. Everybody has bigger problems. It is what it is. It's all good.
Starting point is 00:24:19 Thank you, David. We'll talk again soon. Appreciate you, bud. David, I called 24-7 SportsHawkeye Insider.com. Thanks, as always, too, David, for his time. We come back on the other side of Lockdown Hawkeyes. Time to take a look at potential a chance for you to drink some beer and help the Hawkeyes. That's next.
Starting point is 00:24:48 Trent, kind of back with you one final time on your daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast. It is Lockdown Hawkeyes. Thanks for being with us and making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day. So there's some rumblings out there that potentially we're going to have a new Hawkeye beer. A few years back. It was the swarm beer that came out from Exile Brewing. I enjoyed it. Had a few of those throughout the time.
Starting point is 00:25:07 Had a couple in the tailgate. Good to go. Now potentially Big Grove is partnering up with a potential new beer. A Tiger Hawk beer, there is a Instagram account that has Tiger Hawk beer that is set up through Big Grove Brewery. Absolutely. Sign me up. Any chance to help the Hawkeyes to drink some beer? I am in.
Starting point is 00:25:26 So for those out there, potentially looking at another way, another avenue and not just donating your money to the athletic department and to NIL and the swarm collective and all the different places that you can do it. Now, here is another opportunity. And we'll see about the taste. And, you know, this is always the most difficult part about it. Me, I am not a very adventurous drinker. I enjoy some sours. But outside of that, I'm a domestic guy.
Starting point is 00:25:50 Like, I just drink Coors Light. That's about it. A Coors Light, a Bud Light. I'm good with that. I'm not a Miller Light guy. But that aside, that's normally what I do. Very simple, very basic. In college, it was natural light.
Starting point is 00:26:01 I'll have a natterday from time to time after Bowen the Yard. Those are the kind of things that I do anymore. I'm not crazy about the IPAs. Don't do it for me. But we'll see. Because it's difficult. You want to have something that most people enjoy, right? That's when you're putting together one of these beers,
Starting point is 00:26:16 you're obviously trying to sell to the masses. And for a lot of people, that means not an IPA, anything heavier like that. Tailgate beer, you're thinking about something like crisp. I think that's what a majority of the people are looking for. You're never going to help out everybody. You're never going to give the taste that everybody wants, and that's what makes these adventures very difficult,
Starting point is 00:26:35 I'm sure, for the breweries are trying to put it together. We'll see what it is. We'll do a taste test, definitely, and see how it goes. And we'll report back when we get the new Tiger Hawk beer. That sounds like it's coming from Big Grove Brewery. That'll do it for today. Thanks for being with us and making lockdown Hawkeyes, your first listen every day.
