You are Locked On Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day.
Welcome back, Hawkeye Nation, to another episode of the Locked On Hawkeyes Podcast,
your daily podcast covering your Iowa Hawkeyes on the Locked On Sports Network.
As always, I am your host, Andrew Wade, and today's episode is brought to you by rockauto.com. Amazing selection, reliably low prices, all the parts your car will ever need,
rockauto.com. And on this Friday morning episode, we are bringing you part two of our interview with
LaShawn Daniels Jr. If you didn't get a chance to check it out yesterday, I recommend you do that.
We talked all about his Iowa career on yesterday's show.
And on today's show, we're going to focus primarily on the NFL.
We're going to talk a little bit about some of the stuff that happened in June and July
with the Iowa Hawkeye program and kind of his thoughts on that.
And then we're going to get to some lighthearted stuff, talking about some of his favorites
in the Iowa City area, his
favorite memories as a Hawkeye, his favorite bars in Iowa City, that kind of stuff.
That's how we're going to wrap up the show today.
So if you haven't listened to yesterday's episode, I highly recommend you do that, that
you can listen to them in either order.
Also, we are going to be kicking off the start of football season by doing a lot of previews
going forward. So next week, we're going to do the offensive side start of football season by doing a lot of previews going forward.
So next week, we're going to do the offensive side of the ball.
And the week following, we're going to be doing the defensive side of the ball.
And then we're also going to be doing a few other kind of fun things, basically running through the schedule each day.
So, for example, I believe on Monday, we're going to be kicking off with Iowa versus Purdue.
And why Purdue is actually going to be a very tough game,
especially with the news that Rondell Moore is returning to Purdue.
So make sure to check out our football preview for the next two weeks.
Every day, breaking down a different position group within the Iowa Hawkeyes.
What guys are going to be the key players? What guys are the key depth players?
What are the guys who could be the highest impact?
So lots of things we're going to talk about with each of those position groups each and every day.
And then be breaking down every single game, giving it its own little segment, just talking through the game in advance of the season.
So that's going to be coming up next week and the week after.
So make sure to tune in for that.
And if you want to just have that episode downloaded directly to your smart device, just go and subscribe wherever you downloaded this podcast at so you can do that automatically. But enough of me jabbering on this beautiful Friday morning. Let's hop into
the interview with LaShawn Daniels. So then going, and I'm actually just gonna go to the NFL side.
So going into the pro day, you run that four or five 40. I think that probably put you a little
bit more on the map with some of the talent evaluators. And you even mentioned that you
were talking to a lot of teams and you kind of expected to be in that UDFA range why did you ultimately choose the Patriots? Really just I wanted to be
a part of at least experience kind of a place where they've been successful they've done it
for years and you know kind of everyone kind of looks up to them right so I was like you know this this is opportunity for me um you know just to learn a lot from you know some of the best in the business
and right it's gonna give me opportunity to you know play for one of the teams that are that have
been doing it for so long and you know it was really they really kind of attracted me at the
time uh obviously they called uh called my and my agent obviously has good connections with
them, so it was really just one of the things where he thought, like, hey, I think this might
be a good opportunity for you, even if you don't make the team, right, you're still going to get,
you're going to get, you know, other opportunities, and, you know, the things that you learn from that
program, that organization is going to be able to, you know, carry over to different places that you
go, you know, whether you continue to make it in football or, you know, in your professional,
you know, work life, right? So, I was definitely, you know, really attracting me there. Definitely
just their organization and, you know, the type of success that they've had over the years,
it was something that I, you know, want to be a part of. Definitely. And after that,
you ended up playing with the Redskins for a little bit
and actually got on that 53-man roster and got a few snaps.
What was the excitement level for you when, A,
you found out you were going to be on that,
you signed to the active 53-man roster?
And then can you walk through the process of when you went into the game
for the very first time and then your first carry?
Like, what was that excitement level like?
It was crazy. So, first off, the off the like so i was on the practice squad and like the next week like so
we played like this i want to say we played the saints and uh one of our backs got hurt that week
uh in the game and uh so like the next week it was thanksgiving week and so like there wasn't really
enough time for you know them for them to do like um you know obviously you know workouts and stuff
like that to bring people in to get them on the offense so uh you know they call me up they're
like hey i'm like at first they call me i'm like i'm about to get cut again blah blah uh they're
like like oh well you know it's part of the business. He's like, no,
can you come to the complex?
I'm like, yeah. He's like, okay, we're going to bring
you up to the 53.
Blah, blah, blah. I'm like,
okay, all right, this is sweet. This is awesome.
This is what I've been working for
or I've been trying to do this.
That was honestly
just one of the best calls I had.
I was telling my family,
they put me on the film on 53 this week um and we played the giants on thanksgiving which was fun um i did i only did special teams that day um uh but obviously it was
great to be out there right you know it's a night game you know it's nbc all that stuff um you know
it's just good to be actually be on the field and you know do what you what you've been you know, NBC, all that stuff. You know, it was just good to be – actually be on the field and, you know,
do what you've been, you know, training to do all your life.
And then the following week, I want to say we played – I don't remember.
I don't remember who we played.
But one of our – again, we had a lot of running back issues that year.
Yeah.
With Washington.
And, like, I think one of our backs got hurt on like kickoff or something something crazy and then uh
like our starter at the time uh had to come out because like I don't know he was like banged up
or something shaking up and then so they throw me in there I'm like okay all right here we go
all right all right just don't mess up first off don't all start just
look at the ball don't move until they snap the ball um and so like that's obviously that was a
little nerve-wracking um but no it was it was good to get out there you know you're actually
out there you know you got uh kurt cousins calling the plays um and whatnot and uh you know it was
good and you know i actually helped brandon sheriff out on the play uh you know, it was good. And, you know, I actually helped Brandon Sheriff out on the play.
You know, he just, like, blew a block, missed a block on Melvin Ingram.
You know, I hit him pretty good.
You know, lost Kirk Cousins some time to throw for a touchdown to Vernon Davis.
So, you know, it was good.
And then, but we weren't doing too well that game.
So, at some point, I did get carries, which were pretty solid carries at the time.
Yeah.
I think it was like one went for like four
and like another one went for like eight.
Yeah, two attempts for 12 yards.
Yeah.
I was like, okay, this is sweet.
Like, you know, I'm actually getting the ball.
I'm in the game.
You know, I'm making plays.
I'm over that four-yard carry average.
So we're feeling good.
So, you know, it was really just really fun. Great great experience um you know something i had a good time so yeah um so i do
want to touch you know there's gonna be two you know not as i want to talk about your broken wrist
but um real quick for all the a lot of people that listen to this podcast are also vikings fans
and likely don't like kirk cousins uh if you've been paying attention to what he's been doing but
what are your thoughts on kirk just real 20 seconds uh what are your thoughts on him as a quarterback as a person
uh he's a good dude good dude uh our lockers are right next to each other um you know had a good
time um you know talking to him and martin and laudanum um i obviously think he's i think he's
a talented guy um obviously he's been in the nfl for a long time now but obviously pretty rich now
yeah right right he's having his strength he's having his struggles um but um you know i think
he think he'd be able to turn it around uh you know obviously they're not starting all the way
they want to start but you know good dude at least and i know he's a talented guy and i know that you
know he'll find a way to somehow find a way to turn it around. Yeah. All right, I need to quickly pause the conversation with Sean Daniels
because I do have a very important message for you.
I was looking for an air filter for my car.
I went to the auto body shop, and they wanted to quote me at a ridiculous price.
So I decided I'm going to put this in myself.
And believe me, I'm terrible with cars.
So I decided to go to the brick-and-mort mortar storefront, your typical auto place, and look for that.
And the prices seemed a little bit ridiculous.
So I went to rockauto.com, and you won't believe what I found.
I was able to save $60 on two air filters for my car.
That's right, $60 on air filters for my car.
Going to rockauto.com was the best way I could go to save money and get the exact parts that I needed for my car. Going to rockauto.com was the best way I could go to save money and get
the exact price or the exact parts that I needed for my car. Again, I am not a car kind of guy. So
the best part about rockauto.com with that pricing piece is that it's the same for the professionals
and for the do-it-yourselfers. And they literally have everything you could possibly need,
whether it's a, you know, an old 1960s car or your brand new Subaru, it could be a truck,
whatever you want, whatever you drive, they have all the parts that you could possibly need.
And the thing I love the most is the fact that the catalog was unique and remarkably easy to
navigate. It took me probably three minutes to find the parts, pick the parts, and buy the parts,
and then they shipped it directly to my door. I highly recommend you check it out if you have
any car part needs. So go to rockauto.com right now and see all the parts available for
your car or truck right locked on in there. How did you hear about us box? So they know we sent
you amazing selection, reliably low prices, all the parts your car will ever need rockauto.com.
Um, and then, so like I said, I i don't want to i like focusing on the positive
stuff and kind of the exciting stuff you know for for you and me but um the broken wrist you know
you're getting going with washington you get in the game for four straight games you get carries
in the last two and then you break your wrist um how did that happen and what were your initial
thoughts of of like what what we were going to do? Like what was the rehab going to be like, that kind of stuff?
I mean, yeah, it was really frustrating at the time just because I'm like,
man, like now I'm like – like I'm actually like in the games.
Like I was actually, you know, getting snaps on offense.
It was more than just, you know, me being on special teams.
Like, right, I was going in there on offense and getting carries.
And then that happens and I'm just like – it's always just one thing after another, right?
So – and, you know, when they tell you that they're going to put you on IR, you're just
like, you're just like devastated, right?
Like everything's just like, you're like, all the work I just did is basically it's
out the window now.
But, you know, really, I just, you know, just try to stay positive.
It's like, hey, let me just go and, you know, rehab hard and do what I can.
You know, obviously if I get healthy and they cut me, you know,
it is what it is, right?
There's nothing I can do about it now.
But, you know, it was really just to make sure that I was rehabbing right,
you know, still training, making sure I was staying up
and make sure I was in tip-top shape.
So, you know, if I do get cut, you know, I can actually go be able to work out.
Teams can bring me in.
I can show them that I'm healthy and, you I'm able to move and you know listen that so obviously yeah that was it was
frustrating it was really frustrating time uh it was something that I didn't expect I mean of all
things like you know your your your hand and wrist area like like who likes like breaks that arm you
know it was just like in a practice like
not even it wasn't even like a contact play like it was just like me just like basically putting
my hand on the ground and oh that sucks that's how it went yeah it's like you can still run you
can still move you could probably even carry with one arm it's like i just can't be in the game right
now yeah yeah that's how i went down yeah all right that's tough but then
you did get a chance at the packers for a couple weeks um but after that i mean were you still
working your way into the end or trying to get back into the nfl or what was kind of the next
year or two like for you uh yeah so i was doing a lot of training um obviously i got you know a lot
of interest from canadian teams I even got interest from
Canadian teams as recent as uh March of this year um and that's really kind of like where it was at
the time and then you know the time like I didn't know if you know Canada was really going to be
something that was going to end up being for me obviously I know a few Iowa guys have played in
Canada I've done it for for a good amount of time yeah but I didn't know if it was going to end up being for me obviously i know a few iowa guys have played in canada i've done it for for a good amount of time yeah but i didn't know if it was going to be
something for me and like i know my agent doesn't really i guess he doesn't necessarily say that you
shouldn't go to canada but it's like one of those things it's like once you go you're not coming
back yeah it's like because it was like at the time i know that they had like the two-year
contract thing so it was like you had to be be on Canadian team for two years before they even let you out of your contract and all this stuff. So he's like, at the time, he's like, I don't know if it's something that would be worth it. So it was really just me.
to obviously try to get an opportunity to get a workout for one of the teams and such. And, you know, it was just,
I tried not to worry about it too much. It was just really just, okay,
I'm just going today's a new day.
Let me just do my training and, you know, not focus on it. And then, you know,
you see what happens happens. So,
because obviously we know the NFL is a tough business, right.
Even guys that get drafted you
know even when they get cut sometimes right you know even they have a struggle so let alone you
know guys that are untraffed free agents are going to be in obviously a lot tougher spot than some of
those guys so uh yeah it was it was definitely tough tough time you know trying to you know
stay focused on you know still training and whatnot but you obviously knew that like okay
I have to obviously look for other opportunities for employment um and, you know, still training and whatnot, but you obviously knew that like, okay, I have to obviously look for other opportunities for employment and whatnot,
you know, elsewhere. So.
Yeah. And just one last thing on that.
Are you still trying to stay in shape and is there a, if you know,
an NFL team comes calling for a workout, would you want to do that?
Are you hanging up the cleats and you're, you're good?
Hey, if the team called me today, yeah, I would be ready.
I would be ready to go.
All right.
I mean, I still – I train – I don't train, I would say, as long as I used to
just because, like, I do work.
So sometimes I don't have the kind of time that I obviously want to to train.
But I'm still in, you know, great shape.
I try to get my workouts in you know early
in the morning um um throughout the week so then you know i actually know that okay i got my
workout done so you know if my agent does call me like for a workout like he's not going to look
like an asshole um you know bringing me in because you know i'm out of shape and whatnot so yeah i still do train um a lot and i could go
uh you know work out for a team right now if they came calling because obviously i know you know
there's a lot of injuries happening right now it's crazy across the nfl like right so like who
knows who knows what could happen so uh yeah i make sure that i stay on top of it um but it's
not something like like i've just been you know totally focused on yeah
you know at the moment i obviously know like okay i have to i still have to make money right i mean
nfl money only lasts so long when you only played a like a year year and some change right so uh you
know you have to continue to you know work and um do other things versus just you know just training
all the time so so yeah I keep up
I keep up with it not necessarily they're not hung up yet I'm ready to go if need be but
but yeah that's kind of that's kind of where I'm at right now so yeah well I mean the way the the
season is going there's there's a lot of injuries piling up there's a chance man that you could be
finding yourself on a roster I would I would love to see that but right now while you're kind of you know just you know doing your workouts and whatnot what are you up to now
yeah so uh i currently work um as a personal trainer um with our with a physical therapy gym
in my area and we work with a lot of high school kids um a lot of high schools and a lot of like
traveling teams like hockey teams baseball teams
you know you name it um so i've been doing that for about the past year now um and then but i've
also you know actually started um what's it called a job with uh northwestern mutual which is
something that i've been that i was working uh with for like the past month
like like i was doing interviews with that for like the past month now um so i was doing that
but as of right now like i'm full uh working with as a personal trainer on the northwestern mutual
thing is something that's kind of coming you know kind of it's like a kind of like a long process so
it's not something that i've really been in into into like right now so as this moment but obviously it's going to grow kind of as
the as time goes by so absolutely yeah we actually invest through northwestern mutual and one thing i
asked the guy was how long are you going to be here for um it's like it's you know it takes you
know once you get past that five-year hump it seems like it's you're in good spot once you get
you know some recurring clientele and whatnot but yeah it's awesome man um i just have a couple other questions and i'm gonna finish
up just a few easy ones um real quick what was it like playing with your brother at iowa for that
one season oh it was great it's great and it's actually two so uh both my so both 2015 yeah and
2016 yeah yeah so i mean it was it was great I mean, not many people get the opportunity to play play football with their
brothers, let alone, you know,
play at a daytime program like Iowa with their brother,
especially on the same side of the football. So, you know, that was,
that was fun. That was a fun time. You know, obviously, you know,
I can yell. I was able to yell at him a lot more, you know, with him being on the side, you know, obviously, you know, I can yell. I was able to yell at him a lot more, you know, with him being on the side,
on my side of the ball and, um, with us being brothers and, you know,
some obviously the other offense on the line. Um, uh, so, but no,
it was really, it was really good, really good time. Um, fun time, you know,
just to be able to play with your brother who you've obviously grown up with.
Um, you know, you played a lot, um, a lot of different things, you know, just growing up, you know, video games, brother who you've obviously grown up with. You know, you played a lot, a lot of different things, you know,
just growing up, you know, video games, sports, whatnot.
And, you know, to have the opportunity to play with your brother is obviously,
it's obviously a blessing.
It was obviously a great time.
Yeah.
I always forget that James has actually been in the NFL for the,
I think this is his third season.
I forget that it feels like he was just there like last year and he's only,
he's still a rookie to me.
So I always, I wasn't confused with his timeline.
All right. I know. I know you want to get back to the Sean Daniels interview,
but I do have one more very important message for you because as an athlete,
as a guy who does triathlons and Ironmans,
I cannot recommend more that built bars are the way to go for your intake for
healthy and delicious snacks that keep
you going throughout the day built bar is the best tasting protein bar on the market it's a protein
bar that tastes just like a candy bar and they're back and better than ever if you tried the old
built bars well don't worry they got even better and they have six brand new flavors to give to you
caramel brownie cookies and cream cherry barcia lemon almond
cheesecake carrot cake and apple almond crisp i actually have my fifth order coming in in a couple
days that's how much i love built bars so again if you are an athlete or you just need a snack
a pick me up throughout the day i highly recommend you go to built bars again these are delicious
tasting bars are covered in a hundred percent chocolate. They got nut and non-nut flavors for any of you who have those nut allergen issues. And these bars not
only are delicious, but they pack a punch health-wise low calorie, low sugar, high protein,
high in fiber. For example, one of my favorites is the cookies and cream, 17 grams of protein,
130 calories, four grams of sugar, and four grams of net carbs. It's what you
need to get you through the day or to have a pick me up before your workout or even a post-workout
protein intake snack. So go to built bar.com and use promo code locked on and you'll get $10 off
your next order. Use promo code locked on for $10 off at built bar.com. And then last kind of a,
you know, non, I think like exciting question, but I didn't want to then last kind of uh you know non i think like exciting question but i did
want to bring up um you know this your brother did put out that tweet in june i think it really
sparked an incredible outpouring from the iowa community uh in a really great way and changing
a lot of things in a really positive way just wanted to quickly get your thoughts on that
um i don't want to make this like the focus of the conversation because i'm sure you got a lot of questions on it but just what are your thoughts on that and you know
what was the did you have any conversation with him before that i'm assuming you were supportive
obviously of everything he was doing yeah yeah of course of course i'm supportive right um you
know i support you know like all my teammates and you know and them and their stories and yeah like uh I don't remember what's what originally
started him um wanting to make the tweet but I remember like he texted text uh text like we
have like a group chat and he's like yeah I think I'm gonna send out this tweet about um Iowa and
culture change or whatever and I'm like all right yeah sure cool all right all right
and then so he sends out the first one and obviously you gotta kind of like is like a
mixed reaction the first time obviously for good reason people kind of want to know like
okay like what are you talking about like like where's it coming from blah blah like everything
seemed seemed great blah blah and then it might have been, like, a few days,
two days later after that, he sends up a big tweet, and, you know, kind of everyone, you know,
starts putting out their stories and whatnot, and, like, going into it, obviously, we, like,
I was, like, okay, just make sure, like, when you post this, like, make sure you kind of have,
make sure you have everyone, like, telling their stories, right because because if you just post it and
you know people you don't have anything to kind of back it up people are gonna um it's crazy to
think about but people aren't gonna they're not gonna believe you they believe you yeah it's
ridiculous like like like it's crazy to think about think about it like that but like i mean
it is what it is that's how it is that's how it is in the world right now right so you gotta kind
of have stuff to back it up and um, you know, obviously I was supportive of it.
I didn't tweet much just because I didn't really have anything to add. Right.
A lot of people ask me, well, if, you know, if it was so bad, why didn't you why didn't you tell James this and that?
Well, I was like, I mean, a lot of times a lot of people like this didn't know.
a lot it's like i mean a lot of times a lot of people like this didn't know like i mean there's few of us there's a couple of us um who just didn't kind of really have you know the kind of
experiences that everybody else had right um and i think uh a lot of people a few people like
touched on it with tweets was saying like yeah i didn't have quite that quite that exact experience
that you know some of my teammates had but obviously we support i support everything that
they're saying
um and whatnot because like you like you hear stories right like you hear stories from your teammates and you're like like you just think in your head you're just like really like like
you know like outright say like oh like that's bull like that's nonsense well like you like it
you believe them but then you just cope back in your head and you're like like really like that happens
like dang man like like i'm sorry like i'm sorry that happened to you um and whatnot because like
obviously there's nothing there's nothing that you know i personally can do to kind of help you out
but you know you know we can't help get your stories out there and we can you know help you
help other people listen listen to what you have to say so um yeah it was definitely i think obviously a
great thing that happened to the program i think it's something that's gonna obviously push the
program forward with you know a lot of you know uh no incoming recruits and you know the parents
and current players and their parents like you're being able to be kind of that transparent it's
only going to make the program a lot better and i think it was just such a great great thing for people to realize that hey each each of our voices like you know people will
listen right if you speak up people people are going to listen and it's something that obviously
that hasn't had that happened didn't just happen with the iowa program it's been happening you
know all over the country with different football programs and not even with football in general
right just with with life in general and you know different football programs and not even with football in general, right. Just with, with life in general and, you know,
different injustices and that are in the country right now. Right.
That doesn't necessarily mean that people don't like the country. Right.
It just means that we just want to make it better. Right.
We enjoy being here. So we just want to make it better for, for everybody,
make it more inclusive.
So I think that was really a big thing um for our program and for a lot of
you know I wanted to kind of just experience that um firsthand because like I mean you see it because
a lot of people will see it from afar and they're just like oh that doesn't affect me that's it's
nothing right like why would I have to worry about that so I think it was really really good for
you know to kind of for everybody to see how how it is and um kind of get an
experience as close as they possibly can obviously without with not being able to experience it
personally themselves yeah i mean i'm i'm a white guy from a small town in iowa and i think the last
four months has been an incredible learning opportunity for me to learn and grow and
understand and appreciate and respect people's opinions and listen.
And I think a lot of that started, you know,
you see this stuff happening around the world, but you know,
I'm very close to the Iowa Hawkeye football program. So seeing, you know,
James tweet that out, you know,
really hit closer to home than, you know,
some of the other stuff where being from a small town in Iowa, you know,
there's not a lot of diversity there. So I think that was,
I think it's an incredible change in a positive way that he sparked with that.
So, you know,
I thought that was really,
really great by him to be willing to step up and be a leader there.
Yeah.
Definitely something we've talked about on the show here and I have a lot of
conversations with my wife and, and stuff. So yeah, definitely,
definitely appreciate that. Yeah. All right.
So that was probably the deepest thing we'll get to today.
I've kept you a long time.
So I'm going to wrap up with just a couple quick questions.
Favorite bar in Iowa city.
Favorite bar favorite. Ooh, that's a tough one.
A lot of transition, right? We go from,
from very deep conversation to where do you like to drink beer at okay okay
okay i gotta narrow it down to three i can narrow it down to three okay there was three we went
three i went to basically every single weekend um brothers brothers always went to uh swoko
and uh summit those are really the three that I always went to basically
every single weekend. It was like, we know we're going
to these three for sure.
If we hit anything else, it's
just a bonus.
I really never
had two bad
experiences at bars besides
Union. Not a fan of Union.
Wasn't a fan of Union.
Everything else,
it was just too much for me it was more it was way too much a lot too many people bumping up all against me and whatnot
couldn't even couldn't even relax couldn't even hear myself thinking there sometimes so uh uh
yeah really brothers uh Spoko and Summit are my three favorites um it was like those three those three always went
to um and then like my next tier of bars that i enjoyed were um a field house um and pints i
enjoyed those two a lot too as well so yeah i never actually went to pints but i think it was
the old field house i really like the old field house and Column is just like – we have a Sports Column.
I live in Denver now, and we have a Sports Column in Denver,
and that's like where I go every single Saturday for Iowa football games.
And Brothers had deceptively good food.
Like Brothers actually had some pretty good wings.
Like they were solid.
Yeah, so I totally get you on that one.
Yeah.
Favorite non-football activity?
Hmm. Right now it's definitely gaming and i think when i was at iowa was definitely gaming gaming yeah really gaming i mean what's the go-to game in college it was fifa it was fifa
literally all the time it was like like it was like if I wasn't at practice
or playing a game or was in that class I was playing FIFA it was playing FIFA literally all
the time and then now yep basically and now now um it's a lot of right now it's a lot of Call of
Duty a lot of Fortnite if I do game so those are the two that I've been into i love it man so yeah i got a i got a group
of three guys that i play call of duty with and they basically just hold me up because i suck
but i like i like the attempt of trying to win they can actually win so i'm like just show me
where to go um what was your favorite iowa memory um outside of football
i have a memory outside of football If it's too hard
I was going to ask the next question
What was your favorite Iowa football memory
That's tough
That's tough
Honestly really
I mean technically it's football
But it's not football
Really just being in the locker room
With a lot of
guys and you know telling stories you know telling jokes um just clowning around all that stuff is
that's really kind of like the funnest like really like a lot of fun you know happens when i was
there just you know being able to get with the guys and you know tell stories and joke around this is this always always a fun time um
kind of you know what i really enjoyed um you know doing at iowa and then obviously you know some of
the charity events that we did like you know helping out with dance marathons obviously great
like that's that's an amazing thing that they do every single year which has been just always a
blast and you know um but a lot of times it was anything that that where
i could get with the guys and you know we could you know just just enjoy each other's company
just counting around so it's always something that you know was always a good time the brotherhood
man um so favorite iowa football memory could be game could be a moment
i would say season but that's too that's too broad so yeah that's too broad
okay okay obviously personally one of my personal favorites is minnesota 2015
high personal you went off on that game yeah yeah 195 yards and three touchdowns
yeah that that's that's that's up there that's definitely up there okay uh
being michigan is like right here so like i guess like it's pretty close they're pretty close um
but yeah definitely minnesota's definitely won 2015 and that michigan game which was just crazy
just because we were having just such a roller coaster season and have that game was just, just great.
And then obviously capping off 2015 going, you know,
12 and 0 in the regular season, being Nebraska at Nebraska was just great.
Cause we don't like Nebraska. I don't know anybody likes Nebraska.
And to do it, to do it at their place was just, was just awesome.
You know, obviously holding up the trophy and like, you know, like, okay,
like now we're going to the Big Ten Championship game. Like, just everything that came with it
was just great. And great to do on
the Nebraska home field too.
So, my last
question for you, and I was going to ask you what your
favorite place to eat at in Iowa City was, but what are your
three least favorite
teams in the Big Ten?
Three least favorite? Yeah, three teams you hate the most. I asked that question so weird least favorite yeah three teams you hate the most
i asked that question so weird but the three teams you hate the most in the big 10
or dislike if you don't want it just like wife gets mad at me using the word hate so dislike
uh nebraska and minnesota are really –
1A, 1B?
Yeah, yeah.
They can be interchanged however they want.
Let's see.
I hated Purdue just because they have the worst visitor locker room
I've ever been in, ever in the history of football.
Worst in Northwestern?
Worst in Northwestern.
They have the worst visitor locker room ever.
Like, think of, like, the size of your living room with, like, 70 lockers in it.
That's what their visitor locker room is.
It should be illegal to have a visitor locker room like that, honestly.
It's ridiculous.
Couldn't even fit the Iowa offensive line in that room.
It's ridiculous.
It is ridiculous.
Let's see.
it was ridiculous um let's see um Michigan just because you know I grew up from I grew up in Ohio never really liked Michigan never liked Michigan um because you know my parents are Buckeyes yeah
never never never liked Michigan ever um uh that's really it I mean I don't necessarily
hate Wisconsin because I respect them just because
just because of their programs they built that they've basically done kind of over the years
and obviously we just had trouble beating them when i was there we never mean only beat them
one time when i was there so as that's a program now i disrespect i respect a lot um but i hate
losing to them though i hate losing to them that them. It's funny you say that because people always ask me,
because I lived in Wisconsin for four years,
and I hated being around all those Badgers fans,
but I didn't hate the Badgers.
I just was pissed off that we lost to them all the time.
Basketball, football, I mean, we just lose to them.
But I don't hate them.
You guys beat us.
They also don't talk smack to us either, so I feel like that's a –
they get it. We beat you, beat us. They also don't talk smack to us either. So, I feel like that's a – like, they get it.
Like, we beat you.
Yeah.
We leave our talk into the field.
And when you beat us, then you can start talking.
So, I guess I respect that.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Cool.
Well, LaShawn, I've taken up almost all your time.
I was trying to keep this at 25 minutes because I feel like I'm trying to be
respectful of your time.
But we got into a good conversation.
So, I apologize for that.
But any last words for Hawkeye nation man uh no not much man just it's just excited that we got the season coming back
um can't wait to see see our young guys do do their thing and you know some of the vets
i take care of business so excited for the year and go hawks that's pretty much all i got
absolutely man well have a good day lashon yepwn. Yep. Thank you. You too. All right. And that will wrap up our interview with LaShawn Daniels Jr. Again,
a big shout out to him. I was only planning on taking up 25 minutes of his time and I ended up
taking up almost an hour. So I really appreciate him taking the time out of his day to talk to us
about his Iowa career, his career in the NFL and what he's up to now and give us, you know,
some of those lighthearted things, talking about what he loves in Iowa City and what some of his favorite memories were as an Iowa
Hawkeye.
