we made it game week is here we answered today your biggest iowa football questions as we
count down to kickoff it's hawkeye football season you are locked on hawkeyes your daily
podcast on the iowa hawkies part of the locked on podcast network your team every day
hey welcome in i'm trent condon and this is the lock
Hawkeyes podcast. Thanks for making
Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen
every day. I've been covering the Hawkeyes
for over 20 years on the radio here in the
great state of Iowa, including currently, you
can hear me on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
We have stations in Iowa City,
Cedar Rapids, the Quad City, Sioux City,
along with our flagship.
106.3 KX&O
in Des Moines. You can hear me each weekday
talking to the world of sports and a lot of Hawkeyes
from noon to two. Today's
episode of Lockdown Hawkeyes is brought to you by
Fandul football season right around
the corner, visit the Fandual app today and start planning your future bets now.
It is that time.
Football season is here as we get ready for the opener against Albany.
We're going to talk a little bit later on what we learned in week zero, including the biggest
one, of course, Iowa State, Kansas State, what that relays to us as we get ready for the
Sihawk matchup.
Before that, though, the matchup against Albany.
We also today are going to look at many of your questions that have come in here to lock on
Hawkeyes over the last couple of weeks.
some important ones.
There's some silly ones in there, too,
some goofiness, some divisiveness,
and overall, just a good time as we get ready for it.
So later today, we are going to hear, get the press notes,
the game notes, excuse me, from Iowa football.
And with that, we will get a depth chart.
That is something that we are going to tackle deep in tomorrow show
because we have not got a depth chart in so long.
Normally, we get one at Big Ten Media Days,
not the case this year.
Normally, we a lot of times get it even the Friday before the opening week.
So we get it, what, eight days in front of the opener, not the case anymore.
And Kirk Farrants has said there is a reason for that.
And one of the main reasons that we don't get the same number of depth charts that we have in the past is, unfortunately, parents, which is still crazy when we talk about college athletics to me.
Like, I get it.
I coach you sports with my kids.
They're six and ten.
I cover high school sports and do a ton of it.
And that's high school sports.
But when you get at the collegiate level, the parental involvement comes as, I guess, a bit of a surprise to me.
Maybe it shouldn't, though, right?
They're still your kid.
Even as they moved on and they're an adult and playing collegiately, it's still something.
And it's something that Kirkland wants to stay away from.
And that's the case on that front.
We will get to that.
And of course, we will overreact because that's what we do with everything that we get into.
But let's get into some of your questions.
I'll come in here to Lockdown Hawkeyes over the last few weeks,
some of the different thoughts out there.
And I think some real good ones.
I've just picked out a handful.
You can always hit us up on Twitter at Trent Condon.
That's where you can find me.
You can also find our account for the show at Lockdown, Iowa.
Over there, you can find us.
Or you can just hit us up in the comment section on YouTube,
and that's where a majority of these questions do come in.
This one comes from Jim Romaine.
Why do you dismiss Patterson out of hand?
He did good work last year.
the number three, you have no good reason to be dismissive.
He deserves better treatment from the likes of you.
Jim, that's fair.
Absolutely.
And, you know, what I've talked about, Jazian Patterson,
the thing is I guess I just don't see the same kind of upside that you see,
I believe, with a Kamari Molton.
And as I've said with Patterson,
Jazian's good, solid, dependable.
He just doesn't have that wow.
Somebody else checked in, flyover country, he said,
kid smashes the hole with bad intentions, a lot of potential.
potential. That's true. The physicality that he runs with, you're absolutely right.
You know what? I brought up Xavier Williams a couple of times. Maybe it's more of a goal
line back. And maybe that's somebody we need to think about a little bit more in Jazzy
and Patterson in that role. Though he's not the biggest guy by any means, he does. He runs
incredibly hard and love that about Jazzy on Patterson. So it's not a knock on Patterson,
more than anything. I dislike the upside of some of the other candidates in the running back
room. This one comes back speaking in the running back room when we were talking about Nathan
McNeil, who came down to Rhode Island and Arkansas State for his services.
Kyle says, not very often you hear Iowa competing against no-name schools for a recruit.
Seriously, Kirk loves to recruit against crap teams.
I don't know if he loves to recruit against crap teams, but fair enough, Kyle.
That one got a kick on to me.
Randy, he checks it.
He says, why do you always start your podcast about how long you've been covering the Hawks for 20 years?
It's just something that we do here on lockdown.
we're supposed to say our credentials because we love you every dayers.
We love the people that are with us each and every day.
And you are the backbone of what we do here on lockdown Hawkeyes and on the lockdown network.
But we also see the metrics in every single day, the amount of new people that are listening, that are viewing.
And certainly as we kick off the season, those numbers continue to build up.
So as many people is, you probably second me saying it every single day.
Remember, more than half of those people are new, new to the show.
or have not watched very many shows in comparison.
And that's what we're supposed to do,
the headlines, the things that I see the comments.
I understand the concerns,
but it's just part of what we are supposed to do here on lockdown.
And it's very happy to be there with that.
This one comes in from Joseph Wolfe.
And I like this one a lot.
Just need solid possession receivers that run good routes.
No Marvin Harrison juniors go to Iowa.
That's fine.
Iowa wide receivers won't get separation in those games.
Their dbys will be good.
just catch the slants, quick outs and intermediate stuff, plus the tight ends will need to be big
in those games. And I think you're exactly right, Joe. I mean, I don't think any of us should
have an expectation that we're going to see one of these wide receivers go out, catch 75 balls for
1,200 yards and 13 touchdowns, right? I don't think anybody has that expectation, and you really
shouldn't. I mean, that's just, that's the reality, I believe, of this group. But you do have a bunch
for the first time of at minimum dependable guys.
The tight-end position continues to be one that confluence beat.
We talked about this a couple weeks ago.
Open practice.
They're throwing the ball a ton at Kids Day, right?
Checking around the yard, doing a bunch of things.
And then we jump over.
We hardly see the tight end being used.
Then Monday, Big Ten Network is there for their weekly, their tour around the Iowa football team.
And all they talk about is a tight-in.
And just how great it looked.
I still have to see it.
Luke Lechay coming off that entry, didn't have a great year a year ago.
But how much in the passing game are we going to see the tight end?
Because they got two good ones.
Zach Ortworth, Addison Estringa, both those guys are very solid.
And I think upset on both of those guys.
And certainly Ortworth with his speed and the dependability, excuse me, in Estranga.
I think that's going to be in good shape.
All right, this one comes in from Bellator.
As for the linebackers, I'm.
I wasn't worried because they always turn out a good group.
However, after hearing Dave Revson and Jerry DeNardo, back to the BTN tour,
we've been covering here for 19 years, and linebacker play looks about right.
I'm confident they'll be good.
That's from Bellator.
That's another one of those.
I've said for a long time, every day, as you know, that Carson Shire has always been a guy
that I brought up a lot, talked about a ton, and what he can be.
And maybe I've gone a little bit overboard and what the highest of upside is.
I think he's going to be a minimum solid and a chance to be even better than that.
It is still the middle linebacker spot, though, that really does concern me the most.
And I know, it was one game and it's not fair.
And Jane Harrell got thrown in there against UCLA last year and it didn't go well.
He played a little bit the year before in that goal line stand against Northwestern at Wrigley Field.
And he's been in there from time to time.
But he is a backup.
He was a backup.
And making that leap for it.
Because we've also, what we've seen now the last five years of Jack
Campbell and Jay Higgins,
guys playing at an all-American level,
that probably shouldn't be our baseline for expectation,
but we've just had it so good have been a linebacker.
That's where my concern is.
Jane Harold, you got Montgomery behind him,
and then knows it one of the young guys there.
Line packer play, we've seen a couple of years where it's dipped back.
Now, normally, that's because of injury
and because they've had to play guys earlier.
Now, I brought up when James Morris was throwing in there early in his career,
there's been a couple other times where he's seen that.
I mean, when it go way back,
watch when Fred Barr was doing it as a freshman
compared to the guy that he built himself into
as a senior. But
overall, I think that's fair.
Definitely something that is a piece. So we're going through
here and answering some of your big questions
for Iowa football so you get ready for the season.
It is game week and we've got
a lot more of your questions.
Again, you can send them into us here at
Lockdown, Iowa on Twitter or at Trankton
is where you can find me or just hit us up
in the comments section and we will continue
to do these from time to time.

Trent Conn and back with you once again here on the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast.
Thanks for being with us and making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day.
We continue with the questions.
Some good, some bad, just having a good time as we're going through and answering some of your questions.
I really like this one with Brandon Robbins.
He asked, do you think he could be somewhat like a healthy Jewel Hampton?
This was when we were talking about Nathan McNeum.
Neal. That's a really good comp.
Jewel Hampton, if you remember, before the injuries hit him, the physicality that he played
with in kind of a smaller bundle, the shiftyness, and just the understanding of the running
game, that's about as good of a comp, a healthy Jewel Hampton that I've heard for Nathan
McNeil and seeing him out there at Kids Day and what we've been able to see out of him.
This is another one from Bellator said seen pictures of Bryce George lined up and left tackle
when he was playing at Ferris State.
Not saying he played a lot, but he had played it some.
He did mostly right tackle there,
and it does now sound like Bryce George.
The likelihood is, unless injuries hit,
we're going to see the Ferris State transfer line up inside.
It's going to be the guard position for him this season.
If he's going to be out there,
Kirk brought up Rusty Feth,
probably a pretty good comp there of what he's going to be able to jump in.
Freedom Rings, love this show.
Appreciate that.
Kelvin Fisher with another nice one as well.
thanks to you guys for the positives that are out there and what we have.
Here's one.
Let's see.
What else we got?
Scrolling through talking about, of course, Mark Grunowski, a lot of that.
Here's a couple of things about Grinowski.
Preseason struggles.
We heard slow out of the gate coming out of camp and those kind of things and led to people kind of freaking out.
And that's okay.
This comes from Even the Sticks.
He's a million-dollar quarterback, according to both.
commentators, estimating the cost of bringing these guys in.
25 touchdowns, 3,000 yards, or it was a mistake.
So that's the baseline that even the sticks is putting out there.
25 touchdowns and 3,000 yards.
I would say this, you know, if you're throwing in what he does on the ground on top of it,
maybe that is fair.
And certainly taking sacks away from that total, you're throwing the rushing total in there.
I want to see what this thing looks like fully unleashed and what this offense looks like.
And that is one of the biggest things is we're opening up this practice of a new football
all season and open up the president's use we have new season, is seeing what this
offense really is going to be this year.
How much are they going to use Mark Garnowski in the ground game?
Are there going to be designed runs for him?
Or do they believe the importance of him going to be there?
What the down-the-field component is going to look like?
Is it going to look like what we saw Kids Day, where it's going to be a lot of shots?
And we just, we didn't see enough of that last year because quarterback play wasn't there
if they can take that step forward this year.
And that could be a good baseline.
You know, I had it a little bit lower, but let's hope he's right.
And that's definitely something.
The narrow way.
This is what I disagreed with.
Fans are ready for a change, like with Fran.
He just wouldn't change his philosophy on defense.
You get apathetic with it.
And this was in connection with Kirk Farns and trying to put it in line.
And I can't get there.
We're talking about something completely different.
Iowa has sold out another season.
Basically, there's still a few tickets left for a couple of games,
but another sellout of the season.
Yes, as fans, we get frustrated.
And when the offense isn't fun, when it's not clicking,
when we're not having those things,
I get where the frustration comes from.
I understand the angst that we all have as a fan as we watch it.
Look, I talk about it every day.
You listen to it every day.
When it's happening, yes, it's incredibly frustrating.
to equated to Fran McCaffrey
where nobody was showing up anymore
where even the most ardent supporters of Fran
felt like they were running out of ammunition.
Look, I was a Fran defender.
And though I also believed it was time for a change
after last season,
I'd an incredibly happy the way that it played out
and the way that they were able to get Coach McCullum,
I was ready for a change,
but also with the understanding,
the Fray McCaffrey did a lot for the program.
And I guess if you want to equate it that way,
but people aren't doing it with their pocketbooks like they did for Iowa football.
There's frustration, no doubt.
People want to see more, but also remember,
this Iowa football program has had a lot of success.
And you look at year in, year out.
If they can get back to a more competent level offensively,
what else could come?
Even in this new fangled Big Ten,
I think that's where the excitement still can be.
We continue here. Lockdown Hawkeyes, getting some of your questions.
This is from Brian Miller said, is it T.J. Hall hurt.
Wentioned last week that he is back out there on the practice field.
He was out for the open practice, was out, I believe, for another week or so after that.
But he is going to be back out there.
He was back last week.
Kirk Farrants talked a little bit about that.
And T.J. Hall is really important because, yes, Iowa needs multiple cornerbacks this year.
We can't get through with just one or two.
That's just the way college football has evolved and football in general is evolved.
You can't have a bunch.
And Iowa and the 4-25, there's going to be times they're going to go nickel.
There's going to be times they're going to go.
Although that's more of a nickel look, they're going to go dime.
And we saw that a little bit last year with Phil Parker.
And they're going to need these guys.
So it's not just about T.J. Hall.
Because, yes, you need T.J. Hall to have the breakthrough season.
That standout senior year that we've seen so many times in the past where it all clicks.
It all comes together.
And we're not asking to be Dion Sanders, right?
locking down his side of the field.
But I believe he's got to be a true number one.
You've got to see that this guy is our top guy.
Then on the other side, Deshaun Lee,
Shahid Barros, Jalen Watson, continuing to ascend up,
those guys out there fighting for those two through four spots
and what it's going to be.
And you're going to need all of them, I'm going to believe, this season.
But T.J. Hall, not heard anymore, or at least back in practice.
Maybe that's a better way to say that.
and that is something that definitely is something
that is going to be an important piece this season
because you got teams that can chuck it around this year
and speed on the outside.
You look at the way that Indiana plays.
You look at Iowa State.
They got Rock Quebec.
He made some plays.
We're going to talk a little bit more about that a little bit later on.
You're going to have to take on Oregon and Penn State,
a Penn State team that has completely revamped what they did
in their wide receiver room.
Nebraska thinks that they got receivers this year.
And they went out and spent.
We'll see if they got some weapons now for Rayola.
This schedule looks a lot different than it does in past years,
and it doesn't because there's going to be teams that they're going to have to beat 3430.
There's going to be a game this year.
If I was going to win it, they're going to have to do it in ways that they haven't very often recently.
That's where we go with that.
One more before we take our next time out.
This is from Cody, and he says,
very excited about this team could be the most talented since the 2002 team.
I would bet over on seven and a half wins even with this schedule.
Yeah, Fanduil, you can get that right now.
Seven and a half is the overrunner for the Hawkeyes.
And at least when I looked at it last week, still plus money available on the Hawkeyes to hit that over number.
Now, most talented since the 2002 team, that's going to be tough to do.
The 2009 team, when you're maybe looking at it with NFL guys, maybe even was more talented than that O2 team.
If you're talking offensively, though, and certainly with that 2002 offensive line,
The talent, I think it's there.
I think this is a really talented team.
Still a lot needs to happen, though, to get up into that kind of fashion
because we have the question marks of left tackle and at middle linebacker,
the depth of the cornerback room, and just in general offense of what they're going to do.
So I can't get there.
I would love to see Mo Brown and C.J. Jones at the wide receiver spot,
Dallas Clark at the tight end position, an offensive line consisting of,
what, the number two pick overall in Robert Gallery, Bruce Nelson, an NFL draft pick,
Eric Steinbach, another one.
Oh, that team was absolutely loaded.
Let's hope we could get there.
If we're equating this team to 2002, oh, baby, we know that things went really well.
More Iowa football talk here as we begin this season.
It is here.
Game week is here.
We'll let you know what game weeks are going to look like and also some more of your Iowa football questions here to kick off the week.

Now, as a Bears fan, I am excited to take a look at what this is going to look like in the division in the NFC North.
How about this?
Lions plus 160, Packers plus 2.40.

Also here on the show notes,
thanks for helping us out.
Thanks for helping me out as well today
with some of your great questions
and, excuse me, your comments.
This one comes in from Freedom Rings 76.
I'm a little worried about QB play
linebackers and secondary as well.
I have confidence.
Our defensive line is going to make up
for some of those deficiencies
on the defensive side.
good teams will still expose our LB and secondary in space from the tackle to the sidelines with quick screen passes and crossing routes.
Their speed and rub routes could kill us teams like Oregon, USC could give us headaches in Iowa State.
Really good point.
And those are the questions that are there.
I think the quarterback play is going to be better.
It's on a big step forward from what we've seen.
Linebacker mentioned that one in secondary.
So Freedom Wings, I'm with you on a lot of those.
You know, those, that underneath stuff, too.
Yeah, Indiana, Iowa State.
Oh, it's going to tell a ton on this one.
He mentioned that.
Indiana and Iowa State games will determine the season.
I think that's fair.
I think we look at the baseline of this team,
and though I said maybe there is a little bit more separation
than what we're used to.
Eight and four, seven and five, nine and three, ten and two.
It could come down to those two games.
I like Iowa in both the spots against Iowa State
at against Indiana.
I like the way that it sets up.
Against the Hoosiers, I don't know if they can replicate it.
And though I love Mendoza, their quarterback that comes in from Cal,
they still get brought back a lot of weapons too,
something that may be overlooked in what they have at the wider receiver position.
I just like Iowa better.
I think Kinnick's going to be the factor in that one.
Remember, they got a big one the week before also because they'll be taken on Illinois.
And the Iowa State game.
So if you watch it Saturday, you saw them really struggle with cyclones with their offensive line.
It got better, though, as the game won on.
And by the fourth quarter, they were chugging downhill.
They also had some changes.
And what was anticipated their starting center was out because of an illness and didn't make the trip.
So they had to shuffle some things along.
But the tackle play looked pretty rough.
So that means Max Llewellyn and Ethan Hercott and Jose Appanessa.
I'm Brian Allen and Kenneth Merriweather.
Get ready to young men.
We're going to need you to make that happen.
Because as Freedom Rings just mentioned, this defensive line very well can cover up some of
these issues. They have to be great. The defensive line has to be great, and it goes to that
component. It was also hard to take a whole lot out of that week zero matchup with Iowa State because
the field conditions were terrible. He had a rainy day. There were fumbles. There was,
there's also, what, August 23rd? And that's a part of it, too. So there's that, and of course,
we'll get ready for that. But we got a game before that. A couple more comments coming in here
to Lockdown Hawkeyes. Fitzmore,
more likely to be hired at Wisconsin.
That's from Kelvin Fisher.
You could see it.
One thing that I didn't realize until I was throwing a little shade to her guy Ryan with
lockdown badgers is that buyouts $40 million to get rid of Luke Vickle up there.
I mean, that's in today's environment, that is a big, big chunk of change.
Another one from Kelvin.
Algeier will be playing next year, I guarantee.
So if you haven't heard about Lucas Allgaier, we've talked about him a little bit.
get from the St. Louis area.
Hawkeye Bloodlines.
Dad was a football player a while back,
and he's gotten a ton of buzz.
We kind of talked about last week the positivity
that was hated down from Coach Ferrence
as he was talking about Jack Dotsler
and keeping him around for hopefully another season
as he's probably the air apparent over at right tackle
for Jennings Dunker if Trevor Lough
wins this job of left tackle and is running with it.
But yes, Calgary, boy, he comes
up a whole lot. And that's going to be certainly an exciting one. Tom C, I don't understand all
this left tackle talk. It just seems there's more to be worried about. It's one of many. We got to
see it. I like Lauk. I think he's going to get there. What's it going to look like, though,
in the beginning? That's something to keep an eye on. Certainly, Tom C. And what it looks like,
certainly in September, because of those Iowa State Indiana games and how important they're going
to be. Charlie, no matter how the QB place is still.
going to be better. QB. Play is going to be better than I was had in eight years. Let's hope so.
Oh, my. Oh, let's hope that is a case. Message board infighting. Halo is long, boys.
J.B., I got you. A couple more before we wrap up here. And here's one. Big Dog. Jalen Watson's going
to shock the world this year. The kid is getting ready. If you don't know about him, please check
out his story. It's only a matter ton. He's been a dog his whole life.
He's learning getting better daily, and he might be the hardest worker on the team.
I've heard nothing but great things about Jalen Watson.
We brought him up quite a bit here on the podcast,
and wouldn't be surprised.
You're talking about after T.J. Hall, who has the most starts at cornerback this year after Hall?
Jalen Watson might be plus money, but that's a guy that I would definitely take a look at.
That will do it as we go through a lot of different podcasts and on and on and on as we have a lot of comments in here,
A lot of good ones, a lot of things that are muted too.
And that's okay if you need to get it out, you can yell at me, do whatever you need to.
So we're here for.
We're a community.
We're all Hawkeye fans.
Yes, I am a Hawkeye fan, regardless of what a couple of the commenters believe.
Yes, I've been a Hawkeye fan for all 45 years here, and I will continue to be a Hawkeye fan
or as long as I am here.
Thanks for being with us and making lockdown Hawkeyes, your first listen every day.
So this week, coming up, it's game week.
So what does that mean?
What is this going to look like?
So what a normal week will look like is we will have reaction shows,
a couple of those to begin the week.
I'll have my instant reaction after the game.
Hope to get that up to you quickly most times.
Not always the case, though.
I'll be in Iowa City for game number one, taking the kids over and the wife,
so that will not be instant.
And then my wife will let her know that she can drive us home.
Then other games, though.
We'll try to get something up very quickly.
Yeah, probably just a little 15-minute reaction,
something like that just to get you something and then we'll have our full rewind then that'll come out
Sunday night into Monday morning that will be after I get another look at the game going through on
the DVR watching it for a second time a lot of things usually pop up on that one will react to that one
I'm going to have biz coming in this week got a few other things that we're working on getting a handle
on what this is going to look like and what certainly is going to be Iowa football on this season
and what should be a fun fun year that's what it'll look like
Overall, a little bit different here in week number one,
but we got you covered every single day.
It will be depth chart tomorrow as that will be our beginning of the conversation.
Looking forward to get that and getting that in our hands.
