All right, let's jump right into it with our interview with Matthew Crawford.
I'm joined here by Matthew Crawford, the general manager of the Iowa United, and there's been
quite a lot of changes going on with the Iowa United over the last couple of weeks.
I know you've been really busy, Matt, so let's start off with kind of the first things first.
You know, you've changed head coaches.
You are now having Jeff Horner, former Iowa basketball player, going to be coaching the Iowa United in place of Jake Sullivan.
Talk me through that.
Yeah, we certainly have a lot going on.
I think kind of all the general managers this last week or two
are going through a lot of this themselves.
I talked to other general managers,
and we've got prominent teams that are, you know, still looking for guys.
So that's just kind of the nature of the beast.
But, yeah, we decided to make a change, you know, a week or two ago to move on from Jake.
And, you know, we love Jake.
You know, he's a great person on and off the floor.
But, you know, sometimes we've got to make some tough decisions, you know,
just like a lot of these teams do and are doing.
You know, and kind of after seeing with our staff and some players,
we felt like this was kind of the time to move.
We've got, you know, we've got nine, ten players,
plus our staff locked in, ready to go.
And, you know, we just didn't think it was fair to those guys
not to have our coach just as committed.
But, you know, like like i said we love jake
he's doing some great things up in minnesota but uh in the end unfortunately we just we just
couldn't get jake on the same page with us so we need to do uh kind of what's best for our players
absolutely makes sense and i actually i had an opportunity to talk to jeff horner
um last week sounds like he's really excited about the team really excited to be a part of
this team as well so i i appreciate his. I think he's going to be a
great coach for the team. Honestly, when I was
talking to him about his coaching style
and what he anticipates from
his teams in general playing at the D2 level,
it kind of matches up pretty well with
the talent that you're surrounding him with on the
Iowa United. Get out there and
run, shoot the three,
be very progressive on the offense, that kind of thing.
Yeah. Just pumped for the opportunity.
We're talking all the time.
He's just 100 miles an hour, which is great.
He's already talking about, I've got this guy for next year.
We could do this and that.
That's been a lot of fun.
He's excited about it, just like we all are.
I think it's good for Jeff, too, just to get that exposure as a lot of fun that he's, he's excited about it. Um, just, just like we all are. Um, and you know, and I think it's good for Jeff too,
just to get that exposure as a coach in this tournament, uh,
to lead these guys. He brings a, you know, like you said,
a lot to the table as a current vision to coach at Truman state. Um,
you know, he's been a fan favorite Hawkeye nation for a long time. And,
uh, you know, we're thrilled to have him, have him, uh, you know,
and, and former cyclone and, uh, his current assistant McBeth, is going to join him on the bench.
And they're just both, you know, really rare to go to work with these guys.
So, yeah, that's been a lot of fun.
Absolutely.
And, I mean, you talked about, you know, kind of the player connection he has.
He did actually coach Peter Jock, you know, down in Valley for a year and whatnot.
Is Peter pretty excited about this opportunity to get a play for Jeff Horner again?
Yeah, Pete's been excited to play with him.
Jeff knows a lot of these guys.
The connections these guys have are statewide and national.
They know all the guys that we kind of touch base with.
Jeff knows a lot of these guys and um you know was reaching out to him and you know he's reached out to guys i'm like i was like i'm gonna be honest with you jeff i've never heard of
that guy so you know but uh you know jeff's been great uh we couldn't be happier to have him as
as our head coach uh leading this team uh team this year and hopefully for a lot of years
down the road. Absolutely and he I love the fact that he's a bit he's a great representative of
the state of Iowa in general I talked a little bit about him playing even in high school and
he remembered names such as Dan Sibula and that kind of stuff from even from Newton and stuff and
so the fact that he remembers has such a great memory about his time in the state of Iowa I
think will really help again with building some of those connections.
He was a very famous player in the state of Iowa.
So really excited to watch him coach.
Really excited to see kind of how that team comes together under his direction.
Another big move you all are making is moving on to the Wichita region from the Memphis region.
And I think, personally, I'm very excited about it because that's a little bit closer to me, man.
Well, that's why we did it.
Perfect. That was so thoughtful of you that's right
that's the least we could do
yeah you know when we kind of started this whole
process and you know started talking to the
players you know
one of the things I promised all these guys
were two things one is that we would market them
kind of on and off the floor and I
think we've done a good job with that with kind of our
weekly focus you've been great about having all these guys on the podcast you know
we've got hype videos um and kind of like what i've talked to you about you know matt type he's
a great example his his podcasts were uh nothing short of fascinating i think we all uh myself
included learned a lot more about him as a man and a player.
It was interesting.
He's an interesting guy, that's for sure.
He's a great kid.
He is a great guy.
You know, and that's what we really wanted to do with these guys because I think, you know, fans, even the casual fans, you know,
they care more when they kind of know the players a little bit better,
and that's been kind of our plan all along.
Well, the other thing I promised these guys was just that exposure through ESPN.
So, you know, we had a conference call with the tournament
where they mentioned that the Memphis region, the one we were signed up in,
was going to get streamed on ESPN.
Memphis also has not sold a lot of tickets yet.
So, you know, to me, streaming the games on ESPN in front of 100 fans,
kind of like it was in Columbus last year, isn't really getting them exposure.
So we've just decided to move to Wichita for a few reasons.
One is that exposure I mentioned.
Everyone's going to be able to see Iowa United play on ESPN on their TV.
That's a big one for us.
That really puts us on the map.
You know, secondly is the environment.
Wichita has gone completely insane.
They're great fans.
They're going to show up.
Kansas fans are right there.
They're going to show up.
But let me give you an example or a comparison.
You know, Wichita has sold about just over $48,000 worth of tickets already.
They project that to be somewhere over $200,000 by the time the tournament starts.
Memphis is at about $1,000.
So the gym in Wichita is going to be packed, and there's some great talent there.
Kansas, Kansas State, Marquette, Wichita State, Colorado.
I joked with some of them.
I was like, oh, my gosh, it's kind of like the old Big 8 tournament again.
But they're going to have those alumni teams there.
It's going to be a lot of fun.
And our guys are ready for the challenge.
They're embracing it.
I emailed them a few weeks ago.
I told them I feel like we could go to any gym anywhere
and beat anybody on their home court and win.
And like you talked about, the third thing was their proximity.
Wichita is only five hours from Des Moines, a couple hours from Kansas City,
where we have lots of Iowa and Iowa State fans who can come over.
So family and friends coming, you know, five hours versus ten hours, you know, is important for our guys.
So that's why we made the change is it made just too much sense not to.
And it's taking care of these guys, like I said, I would.
That's important for this year and kind of as we build a program going forward so well yeah well
i'm personally really excited about it like i said i'm gonna actually be able to go to the game now
as opposed to trying to figure out a way to get to memphis so i'll be making that that seven hour
drive from denver to wichita and be a part of that experience so i'm really excited to do that
and it sounds like i probably should get on that ticket purchasing process right now
as those are flying off the shelves.
But I 100% agree, man.
It's one of those things I think when you think about sports and whatnot,
you can play the best teams right away or you can hold them off,
but eventually you've got to play the best teams at some point.
So why not get that out of the way, be battle-tested?
You win the Wichita region, you go in there with some pretty high expectations
for winning the whole thing.
Yeah, I mean, I'm not that interested in going and playing some team I've never heard of.
You win a game, you lose a game, whatever.
I want to go there.
Let's get on ESPN in front of everybody, in front of a zoo, and let's roll the ball out there and go to war.
So, I'm excited about it.
The other opportunity it kind of brings up too is, you know,
now instead of bringing all the guys to Memphis and practicing,
there's a, you know, we're working on the logistics.
We're not 100% sure yet, but we're going to try to bring everybody to Des Moines.
And that will allow us to go up to Iowa State and practice a couple days
prior to driving down to Wichita.
We're working on it.
Nothing's official yet, but we're going to try to do something here in Des Moines
for folks that maybe want to come out and see the team, get autographs,
sign pictures, something like that.
We're working on it.
Nothing's official yet, but we'll certainly keep everybody updated.
Yeah, that'll be awesome.
I think the fans will love that, especially with some of the
guys you have coming back, and the fans are going to love the opportunity to just have
a chance to meet some of those players.
All right, so transitioning over to the next piece of big news, Matt. So Wes Washpin sounds
like he's not going to be playing in the TBT due to some injury issues. Do you want to
talk a little bit about that?
Yeah, you know, unfortunately, Wes has pulled tendons in his groin,
and he's going to be unavailable for the tournament.
You know, we're just like every other sports program,
and injuries happen.
So, yeah, unfortunately, it's a bad break for Wes,
who's having a great year in London.
But, you know, we know he'll get healthy and be back.
Hopefully he'll join us next year at 100%.
So former Iowa Hawkeye Cyrus Tate is going to replace him.
Cyrus is playing in the Pro-A League in Germany right now.
Cyrus, and I didn't know this until I talked to him,
he played in the TBT tournament with the, I think it was the Midwest All-Stars
was the group he played with a few years ago.
But, you know, Cyrus is a big, he's a big kid, 6'8".
He's really developed a nice game since he's left.
But he provides us with some interior depth that we really, really need.
You know, we love Wes, but that backcourt was really pretty full
with, you know, Josh, Pete, Tyrus, and Reed.
I think this gives us another a big
underneath that's uh really going to play his tail off and you know jeff warner was um you know i
told him i go hey you know you get who you want if there's a guy out there that you want on this
team grab him and decide he's like yeah let me call cyrus so um that's kind of one of jeff's guys
but i think this makes us even more flexible now
uh with our roster having the four post guys uh four guards and then you know uh bear who can
kind of play in between is a little bit not necessarily a post guy but um you know guy
kind of like tybee two guys that kind of step out but they'll uh you know they'll mix it up
underneath as well and get you those uh hustle points and rebounds and loose balls and stuff like that.
Yeah, and I think people forget the fact that Nicholas Bayer may not be the big size to
be able to play down low, but he can handle his own if people switch off on him and he
has a big guy for a few minutes.
I mean, he's able to get up there and jump up and block it, and he's very nifty with
how he kind of works and operates down in the post.
I mean, there's a reason why he was a walk-on and became one of the most like celebrated players in iowa basketball history over
the last couple years just because of his story and whatnot but a lot of it's due to the fact
that he's been harnessing his craft and working on a lot of those things so he can definitely
handle if he gets switched down low a lot right and so you know cyrus is going to be a little bit
uh a little bit bigger more more physical version of Nicholas.
So, you know, not probably as about as much as Nicholas does,
but he's going to work his tail off underneath.
And that's really kind of what we needed on this group with Marcus.
You know, because Ty B. Google will step out,
anybody who plays underneath, and then we know Nick.
Nick's a banger underneath.
Nick McGlynn, rather, is a banger underneath Nick uh McGlynn rather uh is a
banger underneath but it provides us a little bit of depth and I think that's that's gonna help us
a lot yeah I mean and Cyrus's Iowa career he never attempted a single three-pointer but he shot over
66 percent from the field his final two seasons so I'm a good guy to have down low and and you
know kind of spell Marcus Fizer and whatnot sure sure yep I think
that it only helps us so it's uh we're we're excited to have him on board absolutely well
I'm excited what are your thoughts on this I mean we talked about this before the show but
there's quite a few Iowa Hawkeyes I know you're an Iowa State Cyclone fan so um doesn't sound
like that was really the initial intent um but it sounds like in the future we're trying to get
some more uh guys but it's kind of how, like you said, it kind of ebbs
and flows with the team as you have injuries and whatnot
come on. You have to kind of get some new guys on board.
Yeah, you know,
I think the last couple
years just having a
strictly Iowa State group, that it's
the kind of thing that basically
really wrecked last
year, having any
defections at all.
Well, you know, now we can kind of morph a little bit.
We can kind of, you know, let's get this guy.
Let's take a look at this guy.
So, you know, our player pool is so much bigger, you know.
And so, yeah, I think this is just something that through the years is going to,
you know, provided we can keep doing this, you know,
is going to just kind of move a little bit.
You know, next year we might have more Iowa State guys.
We've got a couple guys that played out of state that are interested in playing for next year.
So I think it's just going to be one of those things that one year you might have four or five Hawkeyes.
The next year you might have four or five Cyclones.
You might have three or four out-of-state guys that played ball here.
And I'm okay with that.
The Iowa thing, it's funny,
it doesn't even cross your mind.
It really doesn't. I'm an out-of-state guy,
but it literally doesn't even cross
your mind. You're focused on
this team, this Iowa United
team, and
bringing the state of Iowa together for this particular
group, kind of supporting all four schools.
So that's really where the mindset is.
There's plenty of times coming up in fall and winter, we can go back and forth and stuff,
but this summer is about kind of bringing everybody together for this, and hopefully
everybody out there is going to cheer us on so spoken like a true iowan i mean that's the that's a general sentiment i've heard
from everyone so far that i've talked to on these podcasts from doing your player previews and
whatnot a lot of those guys you know we talk about what was your rivalry like with iowa or iowa state
and every single time they say yeah we hated them at the time but now we're a state we come together
as a state and i think what i found most interesting was Marcus Fizer,
probably the least initially connected person to the state of Iowa,
seems to have the most pride in everything Iowa, whether it's Drake,
UNI, Iowa, Iowa State.
So really excited to see kind of all that come together
and see all those guys play together.
It'll be a really fun experience.
And you have one big announcement coming up, man.
There's another person that's going to be joining this team. i want to give you the floor to talk about that yeah we we excited
isn't even the word i guess for this so um we have uh decided to bring on uh 2019 women's National Player of the Year, Megan Gustafson. So she is thrilled for the opportunity,
and we're thrilled to give her this opportunity.
You know, and it kind of goes back to what you just said about being an
island, and, you know, we're taking care of all these guys.
And, you know, Megan became available, unfortunately,
and kind of ridiculously.
And, you know, it was something I thought was the right thing to do,
that we grabbed somebody like Megan and her talents and ability
and just who she is as a person to be on this team,
as a great representative of Iowa and women's basketball
and just the state of Iowa so uh we're we're we're
head over heels thrilled that she's uh gonna join us that is incredibly exciting I think it's a
great opportunity for you all and for her as well I mean gives her an opportunity to practice against
some of the the great talent you have on the Iowa United to go against some of the other great you
know teams they're going to be at that Wichita region. Gives her some more exposure, maybe line her up for another WNBA opportunity.
I think one of the big knocks on her coming out of college was just the fact that she's a little
bit undersized. So maybe she can show what she can do in a predominantly men's tournament and
give her an opportunity to play with a WNBA team that isn't thinking with their butts like the Dallas Wings were?
Yeah, exactly.
I'll tell you the same thing I told Megan the first conversation.
I just told her, I go, one thing I've learned talking with all these guys and just being
involved in this tournament is just everybody's journey is different.
Bringing Megan on doesn't change our team goals at all.
We're there to win this tournament.
But it's, you know,
from a personal standpoint,
the relationships we're making with all these
guys and Megan
and helping these players along
has been so gratifying, you know,
really already.
Helping guys like Marcus put himself in a position to play Big 3 next year uh you know really already um you know guys like you know helping guys like marcus put himself in a a position to play big three next year you know it's uh you know guys
like bear and mcglynn who are just starting their professional careers uh getting that getting them
that time to interact with marcus josh and pete all these guys that are pros now um you know the
insight they're going to gain uh they're going to carry the rest of their career, you know,
and Reed and Ty be getting them exposure in their primes of their careers as well.
So, you know, for someone like Megan, I, you know,
I don't look at her as a, you know, former women's college player or WNBA player.
She's a ball player.
And her journey is no different.
And, you know, we're going to do everything we can to help her.
So speaking of journeys, Matt, this is actually a perfect transition so how did you actually get megan gufson on the iowa united
i saw some twitter interactions going on last week the tbt saying megan has a spot on any roster they
want i saw you kind of you know post some stuff on the iowa united twitter account so how did you
actually end up getting meganafson on the Iowa United?
Yeah, I told Megan, I go, wow, the state of Iowa is really, really mad at the WNBA. She got a kick out of it. I kind of laughed about it. But yeah, you know, so to be honest, I'd kind of given this
some, you know, serious consideration when kind of the second I heard she got cut by Dallas.
And kind of the second I heard she got cut by Dallas, you know, I felt like this would be a bold move for her,
kind of a landmark move to have a legitimate WNBA talent level type player from Iowa, no less, on this team. So I reached out to Megan on social media to say hi and see if she'd have any interest.
And, you know, we didn't really get anything back.
And I figured, OK, she probably isn't interested, you know,
busy lining stuff up, et cetera, kind of.
And we just kind of moved on.
So, and I think it was this past Friday,
I get a text from Dan Friel, the head of the TPT tournament,
saying we should recruit her.
I'm like, I'm way ahead of you.
I'm on it.
I'm just not getting any response.
So, you know, kind of sat back. Okay, well, let's pursue this a little more. recruiter i'm like i'm way ahead of you i'm on it i'm just not getting any response so uh so you
know kind of sat back okay well let's let's pursue this a little more uh you know so eventually we
got her information and uh you know permission to call her about it and uh you know and let me say
that she's every bit as wonderful a young woman as we heard she was she's so excited about the
opportunity and she's just been she's been great uh you know since the second
we've talked to her so uh you know everybody should be just proud of her and who she is and
um the the uh leap that she's going to make playing in a tournament like this so
um you know so we got a hold of the tournament let them know that about it and they they were
beyond thrilled and you know part
of my job and you know taking care of these guys and these players rather is protecting them a
little bit and i told megan you know i'm probably being a little bit of a uh protective dad here but
i i don't want this to be a circus for you you know you're not a you're not a three-armed player
you're you're a basketball player uh you know this is a big deal but you know when we talked
to the tournament i told them you know hey i want this all to be respectful to megan and a good experience for her
that uh you know has value for career and you know she's has an opportunity to you know show a bunch
of wmba teams and overseas women's teams uh kind of what they're they're missing out on so
um and dan at the tournament's been great as. He's working on a lot of things behind the scenes for this,
and we're so appreciative of him and his staff.
Yeah, I mean, you guys moved pretty quickly on that, too.
That news happened early last week, and now she's on the team.
So nice work from you all and your staff and whatnot getting that in place.
I mean, I know when you shot me the text, I was pretty excited,
so I was really pumped to talk about it on the show today.
And you mentioned that the whole state of Iowa was pretty pissed off.
And I echo that.
As soon as she got cut, Iowa was playing baseball in the Big Ten tournament,
and there was no talk about that.
It was only, Megan Gustafson's not on the Dallas Wings,
screw the Dallas Wings, and no one supporting the Dallas Wings ever again
was basically the three kind of major sentiments I heard.
So I think you're going to really make a fan base pretty happy here.
Yeah, no, we're excited to give her this opportunity.
Like I said, that's what it's all about.
It's getting these opportunities to get in front of fans.
I mean, she loves the game, and this is just kind of her journey.
There's no right way or wrong way and
um but it's been great you know and it's kind of a fun thing this is a little bit of a i guess
personal side of it but uh you know i think the first person i told uh after meg officially came
on was my my eight-year-old daughter mckinley so uh you know i'm i'm kind of talking to her about
you know these kinds of things all the time that hey you know you can do anything a boy could do
anything you know you want to play football great go play football and her about, you know, these kinds of things all the time that, hey, you know, you can do anything a boy could do anything.
You know, you want to play football? Great. Go play football. And she does.
And, you know, you're every bit as smart and as tough, all that stuff. So, you know, she just had the biggest smile when I told her Megan was going to be on the team.
And that personally for me was just really great.
And, you know, what a great thing for, you know, all the little girls out there to see.
And parents, you know, around the state and watching on espn can have those same conversations as well like you know just you
turn on the game and here's all these guys playing and and you know they're going to see megan
gustafson checking the game and battle with these guys these professionals from overseas i to me
that's that's just awesome and we're thrilled to give her that opportunity and have that visual for a generation of little girls out there playing basketball too.
We're excited about that too.
It'll be a lot of fun.
Obviously, I'm friends with you on Facebook.
I know you're pretty involved with McKinley and she loves basketball it sounds like.
Is she pretty excited to probably meet?
I'm assuming she's going to have the opportunity to meet Megan Gustafson.
We're probably going to have to make that happen.
Yeah, we'll have to make that happen for sure.
That's exciting.
Well, I'm really excited.
It sounds like, you know, when you have that – if you do have that player day as well, Megan's going to be a huge draw.
I think you're going to see a lot more, like you said, little girls in the crowd that are really excited to meet, arguably their hero. I mean, I think on the run that Iowa did this past year,
Gustafson was the catalyst for that,
and she was someone who really inspired a state.
I mean, like we've talked about before, I root for all the teams,
but I think vice versa.
People root for all those teams too from the state of Iowa.
People are rooting for Megan Gustafson to succeed
just because she did play for the University of Iowa Hawkeyes. So exciting stuff to watch her play and it'll be fun to watch her play and
battle against those men yeah absolutely you know and it's all of these guys you know and sometimes
I don't think uh you know until you're maybe a little bit older you know some of these players
you know then they realize how big a deal they were to, you know, the kids before them. And boy or girl.
You know, I was just reading the other day, a kid at Iowa State signed for basketball.
Grew up watching, you know, George.
Yay.
So, you know, George was appreciative of all that, I'm sure.
But so, you know, this will be great.
Everybody's going to remember to watch, you know, Marcus play.
You know, all the kids now, you know, they watch Nicholas play and Pete and stuff.
Now we're just bringing in a huge group, a segment of little girls
that love watching Megan Gustafson play.
I think that's a really cool thing for our state.
All right, and that concludes our podcast show for today
and our episode with Matthew Crawford.
I hope you enjoyed some of those big announcements,
finding out Jeff Horner is going to be taking over,
that Megan Gustafson is going to be joining the team,
that Cyrus Tate is going to be on the team,
and that the Iowa United is going to be playing in the Wichita region,
which makes that drive significantly easier for all you fans
located in the state of Iowa and the surrounding areas.
