Welcome to another episode of the Locked On Hawkeyes podcast.
The Locked On Hawkeyes podcast is one of the most recent additions to the
Locked On Sports Network's growing lineup of college podcasts.
I am your host, Andrew Wade, editor over at dearoldgold.com
where you can find analysis pieces on all things black and yellow, and we have a ton of
content to cover for you today. Lots of things happening in Iowa
Hawkeye athleticsics. Big weekend
for sports. Even if Iowa City had some bad weather, a few things were canceled, lots of things were
taking place. So we have a lot of things we want to give you some updates on, put you in the know,
that kind of thing. On segment number one, we're going to be covering the Iowa versus Ohio State
basketball game. The men got a big win against Ohio State, beating them 72-62. We're going to
be talking about that in more depth on segment number one. On segment number two, we're going
to be touching on a lot of the other Hawkeye athletics. We're going to be covering women's
basketball, wrestling, swimming and diving, and track. So make sure you're staying tuned for
segment number two to get a little bit more information on what's happened outside of
men's basketball and football,
which we cover a lot on this show.
And then finally, on segment number three, we're going to be doing sort of a hodgepodge,
a collection of different topics that have come up over the last couple days,
starting with Tyler Cook's injury at Ohio State.
We're going to be talking about Akron Wadley and where he's heading next,
and then talking about TJ Hawkinson and what is going on.
And then finally, Gavin Williams, a four-star running back who did commit to the Iowa football team, and where he's heading next, and then talking about TJ Hawkinson and what is going on,
and then finally Gavin Williams, a four-star running back who did commit to the Iowa football team this weekend.
So we have a lot of stuff to cover. Let's jump right into it. But before we do, make sure you are subscribed to our podcast on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts at.
And if you have a smart speaker at home, it's as easy as saying, Siri, Google, or Alexa,
play podcast Locked on Hawkeyes.
That will give you the latest episode of the Locked on Hawkeyes podcast, so you can listen
to it at your convenience whenever you need to.
All right, jumping right into it, though, Iowa did beat Ohio State 72-62, a big win
for Iowa.
You know, they won two straight games. This third beat Ohio State 72-62. A big win for Iowa. They won two straight games.
This third game though is huge. I think the Ohio State win could look good come tournament time as long as Ohio State picks it back up. They've been kind of struggling the last couple weeks,
or sorry, the last week losing first to Michigan State and then losing to Rutgers at Rutgers.
Kind of a tough slate for them, right? Michigan State's never an easy team.
Going on the road to anywhere is always tough, and that's what happened against Rutgers and obviously against Iowa. But what more impressed me about this game was how well
Iowa did defensively and something that's been kind of a theme, right? Iowa last year was atrocious
on the defensive side of the ball, but this year they've shown they can play defense at times.
I think that's what's even more frustrating for Hawkeye fans is some games they have a fantastic defensive showing.
Other games, it looks like they're just letting them score at free will.
And I think that was really frustrating against Purdue, against Michigan State.
But the last couple games, Iowa's really picked it up defensively.
Held two teams, Northwestern and Ohio State to
the lowest scoring totals Iowa's allowed
in the last year, year and a half. So
fantastic effort by Iowa.
In this game, they actually forced
21 turnovers. So
another good showing by the Hawks.
And even on a game where
Iowa didn't really shoot that well from the field,
they shot 25% from three-point
only making four three-pointers out of 16 shots,
and then 45% from the field, just slightly below their season average of 47%.
From the free-throw line, they only shot 72%.
So again, not the best offensive showing,
but defensively they were able to hold Ohio State to 62 points.
And Ohio State actually shot worse from the field overall
than they did from three-pointers.
So they hit 37.3% of their field goal attempts
and 40% of their three-pointer attempts.
So again, another good defense is showing by the Hawks.
They got Ohio State into foul trouble early.
Three guys had four fouls or more,
including Caleb Wesson,
who actually was Ohio State's leading scorer with
17 points coming into this game. He was averaging 17 points per game. Against Iowa, he only had
two points. He only hit one field goal on five attempts, only had six boards. That's impressive
for Iowa to be shutting down those guys. Think about it like this. Tyler Cook is Iowa's best
player. No one has shut down Tyler Cook this season.
It's just not happening.
So it takes a large effort, a large team effort,
to be able to do that against a team like Ohio State.
Only two guys on Ohio State's team even got in a double-digit scoring.
The rest were held to eight points or less.
So not a great showing from Ohio State.
And again, another big win for Iowa to beat number 16 Ohio State
on the game a couple cool
key notes Jordan Bohannon actually scored
he hit his 1000 point mark he went 1 for 7 scored 6 points
but did pass that 1000 point mark
something that's very cool and also something that's pretty interesting
because he did something that two of his other brothers have already done
and that actually put him and made him part of a group of you know 16
17 people to have a trio of brothers score over a thousand points in collegiate basketball so
nice work jonah bohannon not exactly the best game in general but nice work overall getting to that
that milestone really impressive milestone to reach in your career. Luka Garza did lead the way, and that was really the difference here.
Garza's been playing incredibly, even though he's been dealing with that nagging ankle
injury, fantastic to see him come back, get starters minutes, get 16 points.
He only had four boards, but 16 points on 6-7 shooting was fantastic, 1-2 from 3.
I think after this game, with Iowa going 3-0 over the last three games,
now sitting at 14-3 and 3-3 in the conference,
that was really what needed to happen for Iowa,
and they should be ranked after this game.
Rankings come out later today.
We should know very soon where Iowa stands,
but I would say probably somewhere in the 20th to 25th range.
Fun stuff there.
Iowa does take on Penn State on Wednesday.
We will have a full preview ready for you tomorrow morning.
That way you can get in the know for the Penn State-Nittany Lion game.
The other key note to take away from this game is Tyler Cook was injured.
Fell down hard, couldn't put any pressure on his ankles limping after the game. So definitely a big concern.
He's likely to miss at least a few games.
Don't know how severe it is yet.
Haven't gotten a lot of word out from that injury.
But as soon as we do, we will let you know either through the podcast or on Twitter at LockedOnIowa.
So make sure you are following us there.
Once we get the breaking news, we'll let you all know and distribute that information out.
Coming up on segment number two, like I said, we're going to be talking about other Hawkeye
athletics and what's happened in Hawkeye sports this year.
Before we do that, though, I have a message for you, the listener.
Because if you're like me, you hate to miss your favorite team play, regardless of who
they are playing.
And that's where Sling TV comes in.
Now I never have to miss a football or a basketball game.
And the best part is,
I no longer have to pay for a bunch of channels
I don't even watch with a typical cable package.
For just $30 a month,
you get access to ESPN,
the Big Ten Network, and more
without the hassle of a long-term contract.
What's even more exciting
is that we have a fantastic offer for you.
Locked On listeners can get a free 7-day trial by going to sling.com slash locked on.
That's S-L-I-N-G dot com slash locked on.
Never miss a game again with Sling TV.
Alrighty then, we are back with segment number 2. All righty then.
We are back with segment number two.
And just a reminder, on segment number three,
we're going to be talking about really a collection of different topics
that have come up, some late breaking news, that kind of stuff.
So I want to make sure we're covering that on segment number three.
Segment number two, though, we're going to be talking about other Hawkeye athletics,
some of the sports we don't give as much attention to.
First coming up, though, is the women's basketball team.
They lost a tough matchup to Purdue and West Lafayette, so not exactly a good loss.
Purdue is a decent team, but Iowa does need to win some of those key Big Ten matchups.
They take on Minnesota in Minnesota tonight, though, on ESPN2, so make sure you are watching that game.
Good opportunity for you to see Megan Gustafson
take on the Minnesota Gophers
who are currently actually I think 12-3 at this point.
So they're doing real well.
Want to make sure you're watching that game.
It'll be a good one for the women.
Against Purdue, Gustafson did have another strong showing.
Put 19 points in a 9-13 shooting and 13 rebounds.
So please watch the game tonight. It'll
be fantastic. If nothing else, you get to see
like I've been talking about the last couple weeks
the best player in women's basketball
history for Iowa play. And that's something you don't want to
miss. Something you don't want to
not take advantage of at this point.
The wrestling team
had a little bit more luck though.
Luck, I would say skill more like
but they beat number 7 Minnesota
24-10 this weekend
only 3 guys lost
and Iowa got penalty
deducted just because of unsportsmanlike conduct
at 174
Mitch Bowman lost a decision
to number 11 Devin Skatska
at 285 Connor Corbin
lost a decision to number 2 Gable
Stevenson.
And at 141, number 15, Max Mirren lost the decision to number six, Mitch McKee.
So good win by Iowa to take out number seven, Minnesota.
They are currently undefeated 7-0 at this point.
And they take on Rutgers Friday night in Iowa City.
So should be another opportunity for them to get a big win there.
A lot of fun.
If you do get an opportunity to watch the wrestling team,
they are extremely talented, a lot of ranked players.
They're not even wrestling all their strong guys in each of these matches,
and that's how well they're doing.
Men's-wise, the men were supposed to have a swimming and diving meet
this weekend against Notre Dame,
but that was canceled likely due to the poor weather.
The women, however, were able to get out of the state, travel to Illinois,
and have a three-team dual meet against Notre Dame and Illinois.
They did beat Illinois 157-143, but they did fall to Notre Dame 204-95.
They are now 4-4, and they actually take on Wisconsin later in this week.
Then finally, wrapping it up, for Hawkeye Athletics,
track and field Hawkeye Invitational took place this week for both the men and the women.
The women did fantastic, though, crowning five champions.
They even set a program record in, I want to say, the shot put.
So make sure you're watching that.
Just starting to gear up for track and field,
and we have a couple other sports starting
to take place over the next couple
weeks. Specifically, the baseball team
is getting ready to get back in action. So
another, you know, a lot of fun
stuff taking place in Hawkeye Athletics at this point.
You're not going to want to miss that stuff.
And that'll do it for segment
number two. On segment number
three, we're going to be talking about Tyler Cook,
Akram Wadley, and TJ Hawkinson,
as well as Gavin Williams, the four-star running back who just committed to the Hawkeyes for the 2020 class.
So make sure you stay tuned for that after a few messages from our sponsors.
All right, we are back on segment number three.
We want to talk about a lot of kind of hodgepodge of topics.
The first one is Tyler Cook's injury.
So we don't know where he's at right now.
Like I said earlier, as soon as we find out on his injury, we will let you know.
We will be posting that on the Locked On Iowa Twitter account.
So make sure to check that out, at Locked On Iowa.
We'll also be talking about it on the show as soon as we get that information.
But just some speculation here.
You know, he came down on the very hard.
It did not appear very good.
And Tyler Cook, you know, he's a really strong player.
He's the best player on the Iowa Hawkeyes.
And what Fran's shown this year so far, as he's been dealing with a lot of injuries,
is that he's willing to play that long game. He's willing to wait and not force people to come back into action any sooner than he
has to their their depth is getting a little bit slim at this point but what he'll probably do is
just continue what he's been doing and playing a mix of Nick Bayer and Ryan Creener at that spot
and so far has been relatively effective I think defensively it's been tough not having Cook down low. And Cook's not a good defender by any means, but he's still a presence
down there. And he's also able to get guys into foul trouble. But what we've seen over the last
couple of games is the emergence of Luka Garza without Tyler Cook's shadow. Garza's really been
demanding the respect that Cook usually does. And it's kind of exciting to see that. But another
person who's really stepped up is Joe Weiskamp,
and those kind of guys are going to need to step up with Tyler Cook out.
Hopefully it's only a few games.
Hopefully Iowa can get him back against Michigan State
in a really key matchup at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
But for now, we'll hold off and wait until we get more information back
on what's going to happen with Tyler Cook.
In football news, Akram Wadley is
heading to the Canadian Football League to play for the Ottawa Red Blacks, and this is a little
bit shocking. I really thought he could have signed a futures deal. I'm a huge Broncos fan,
and I was pushing for him to, you know, just not to anyone specifically, but pushing for him to get
a futures deal with the Broncos. I'm a little bit shocked. And I think coming out of, you know,
coming out of college, he ran a poor four, four or a poor 40 yard dash, which didn't really help,
but he was electric in college. And I'm surprised he hasn't latched on anywhere. He even did well
with the Tennessee Titans in the preseason got cut and didn't get really signed back to anywhere
else. So interesting to see that. But with that being said, I've heard, you know, some players
love the CFL. You make decent money, you play you play you know a high level of competition and it's a lot of fun you
don't have that you don't have that um pressure that you do from the nfl you know you're making
a couple hundred thousand dollars you're playing in fun environments a little bit different of a
league that kind of thing so it'll be fun to see wadley play it's wide open, if you don't know anything about Canadian Football League, it's a very
big, wide open field.
A lot of opportunities for guys like Wadley with his agility and electricness to be able
to make big plays.
And he's going to be joining one running back on the roster.
So the Red Blacks have three fullbacks and one halfback.
He'll be joining Greg Morris.
So my guess is this will be one of those situations where Wadley will be playing wide receiver
just as much as he's playing running back.
So it'll be fun to watch, and we'll keep you posted on his stats there.
The season kicks off in June, so not a lot to cover right now.
We'll be covering that later this year.
In other news, we have no news on TJ Hawkinson.
We have not heard anything yet.
There's been reports that he's been down in Florida doing some training,
which would seem to me like he is preparing for the NFL,
but I don't understand why you don't announce that yet.
Today is the deadline.
We will find out today whether or not TJ Hawkinson is coming back,
and we will let you all know what our thoughts are on that after or on tomorrow's show.
So make sure you're tuning into that. But for now, kind of makes me i'm just getting antsy i just want to know what's
going on with t.j hawkins and i want to know does iowa return one of their best playmakers from
last season let's hope so but again like we talked about the last couple days i understand it you
have the opportunity to go make millions of dollars you got to take that opportunity
in other news though gavin william, a four-star running back,
committed to the Hawkeyes for the 2020 class.
A great pickup considering he's an in-state person.
Iowa, to be successful, always needs to get those in-state commitments.
Those are the kind of guys that grow up wanting to be Hawkeyes forever,
and it'll be a good opportunity for them.
Gavin Williams is going to be joining a crowded running back group.
Lots of running backs will still be there.
I mean, we have three juniors this season with McKee, Sargent, Ivory, Kelly, Martin, and Torin Young.
We have Henry Giles.
We have other running backs coming in, Tyler Goodson and whatnot behind them.
So he's joining a crowded running back class,
but that doesn't mean he's not going to have an opportunity to play.
It just means that he's going to be joining a crowded class
that's going to be tough to break into.
But as we've seen this past year,
the rushing game has not been the strong suit for Iowa
in the last couple of years.
After Wadley left this past year, it was really a struggle.
He is actually going to be playing his senior season at Dowling.
He's transferring from, I want to say, Southeast Polk.
If anyone's familiar with Iowa sports, Dowling is kind of the cream of the crop
with their ability to, for lack of a better term, recruit due to the fact that they are a private
school. But it'll be fun to watch him play for a good program like Dowling. Likely going to see
him play in the Dome during the state playoffs. But that'll do it for our segment number three,
our big updates from this weekend. And like I said, that'll do it for our segment number three, our kind of our big updates from
this weekend. And like I said, that'll do it for segment number three and our Monday episode,
a little bit shorter episode today. We'll have a lot more content coming at you tomorrow.
Like we said, we'll be back tomorrow on our Tuesday episode. Make sure to tune in with us
there. Hopefully we have information on what TJ Hawkinson is doing, what is going on with Tyler
Cook, and we can cover that and more details tomorrow morning.
