Starting point is 00:00:00 John Madden famously said, if you have two quarterbacks, you have done. Looks like the Iowa Hawkeyes after spring practice, have two quarterbacks. You are Locked on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. Welcome in, I'm Trent Condon, and this is the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast. Thanks for being with us and making Lockdown Hawkeyes, your first listen every day, your daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast. We're going to get into the NFL draft as it caps over the weekend. A lot of Hawkeye selected, including a program record, plus some free agency news as some guys finding homes at the next level.
Starting point is 00:00:46 We're going to talk about spring open practice, the players that pop, some observations that we have from the takeaways on Saturday at Kinnick Stadium. And, of course, we begin today with the most important position on the football field, the most important position in sports. It is the quarterback competition. And after seeing the two anticipated guys fighting for the job in Iowa City coming up this season, Jeremy Hecklinsky and Hank Brown, this thing has become clear as mud. Now, this is one practice. This is one of 15. And yes, we have had a little bit of a glimpse of both of these guys in game action,
Starting point is 00:01:21 a little bit more of Hank Brown in the Indiana game than we've seen of Jeremy Hecklinsky. Still, we've talked about the storylines a ton. After the performance by Hank Brown in the Indiana game, the misspast that, that could have clinched a victory against Indiana. In my mind, complete that screen pass. Iowa beats the national champion with a chip shot field goal. Alas, that does not happen. And we know the way that that one played out.
Starting point is 00:01:44 But regardless of that, that was one moment, a guy that was thrust in against the national champion. And I don't think we want to make sweeping justifications about a guy that can't get it done in a game like that. I think it's a little bit unfair to Hank Brown because on Saturday, one of 15 practices in the spring, I thought Hank Brown was better. And I'm surprised by that.
Starting point is 00:02:07 If you're an everyday listener here of Lockdown Hawkeyes, you know I have been in the Jeremy Hecklinsky camp, a guy that took over the backup role after that Indiana game. They had the buy week. It looked very dicey if Mark Grinowski was going to play against the Badgers in that one. Of course, he went, played the rest of the season. Heklinsky got to play late in that game. But I thought just his ability to move, the movement that he has,
Starting point is 00:02:30 that that was going to be really the big difference maker between the two. A couple of plays early in practice when they're going through some red zone situations and not going full field. I think you saw good throws from both of those guys. I do like of Jeremy Hecklinsky. He's not afraid to go across the middle. And I think all of us Hawkeye fans throughout the years, there have been so many times with I was just unwillingness to go to the middle of the field
Starting point is 00:02:53 and how many plays they feel like they leave out there where you're just cutting the field down and you're cutting off a third of the field, just going to the sideline so many times. And, heck, Glinski, he's not scared to make those throws. He's going to step up in the pocket and make those throws. He had a really good one in the red zone. I thought to Dayton Howard stepping up into the pocket. You know, there's a lot of caveats you have to throw with the spring practice to
Starting point is 00:03:15 mention it's just one of 15. You don't want to make big, broad, sweeping realization. You know, another part of this also is, of course, the Iowa defense knows the Iowa offense inside and out. They've been going up against this. and saw a very vanilla scheme from Iowa offensively. Tim Lester talked about that earlier in the week before the practice began, that they weren't going to do a lot of things that they have implemented.
Starting point is 00:03:40 They're not going to see them on Saturday, and that was definitely the case. So you put that out there. The defense is always ahead of the offense. We hear that so often, too, all the normal things that we talk about with spring practice. Back to the quarterbacks, though, Jeremy Hecklinsky. His ability to move, one thing I do really like about Hank Linsky is he's, He is a guy that has really good pocket presence and not he's just moving around and move around.
Starting point is 00:04:03 But I don't want to put him in the same ballpark as Drew Tate. But of the quarterbacks of the Kirk Farrant's era, I don't think there was anybody that had a better pocket presence than what you saw from Drew Tate. Just that ability. And maybe it's innate. It's incredibly difficult. I know to coach it and to just figure out guys is how to improve that thing. It's, yes, your mental clock, your internal clock, understanding when. pressure is coming, but just the feel inside the pocket.
Starting point is 00:04:30 And I do feel there's an advantage for Jeremy Hecklinski from that. But in terms of athleticism, in terms of speed, there's not a real big gap there. Jeremy Hecklenzky's quicker, side to side. He's got a little bit more wiggle to him. But straight-aligned speed, I think Hank Brown has him. And maybe it takes a bit more for him to get going and get that speed up there. But we talked about this last week. You equated a little bit to the 40 times between Nathan Chandler and Brad Banks,
Starting point is 00:04:55 going back over 25 years ago now. And Brad Banks straight ahead was not as fast as Nathan Chandler. Took Chandler a little bit more to get going. But sideline to sideline, they look different players completely. Just the wiggle again was different. I do think you see that difference, certainly with Hank Glinski against Hank Brown. I thought Hank Brown was a better quarterback. And again, I was surprised by that.
Starting point is 00:05:17 That was what we're going to see. Mention the Red Zone throw for the touchdown to Dayton Howard. Also, we saw Hank Brown maybe make the throw of the day, a really good one that he made to DJ Vinami as he was able to throw one out of dark, just an absolute rope into the end zone for a touchdown, a beautiful throw, and absolutely love that one. But then he saw a little bit later on, he had KJ Parker streaking open. He underthrows them.
Starting point is 00:05:42 So it's the good and the bad, and I think you get the good and the bad. The thing that stood out to me with this quarterback competition is Jeremy Keklinski, when he missed, he missed bad. there were a few throws. Now, they could have been throwaways, those kind of things. I get that, but there were a couple of moments where maybe the term would be non-competitive throws where, all right, you're just not even close to your intended target. I just, I found that a little bit odd. Struck with me and stuck with me a little bit of some of those misses were bad misses. You can argue, well, didn't give the defense a chance to intercept it. Okay, that's fine. Heglinsky also goes with some different arm angles.
Starting point is 00:06:21 And with his size at 5 foot 10, that's going to go along with. him. Look, as a short quarterback, you're going to have those times where you're not just going to be able to come straight over the top with your throws. You're going to have to do things in different ways. Could be good. Could be bad. We'll see about that. But I also saw that out of Jeremy Hicklinski. Also, you look through and the number of guys that were out were a big component to this. And was not playing with Tony Diaz anticipated number one or number two with Reese Vander Z coming up this season. He wasn't out there. We also didn't get to see Jared Bowie, who I was really, really excited to see. A guy that showed a little bit early in his career was out all last season
Starting point is 00:06:59 with an injury. He wasn't out there. So no Tony Diaz, no Jared Bowie, didn't get an opportunity to see him. The other transfer along with Tony Diaz and the wide receiver position, Evan James, he wasn't out there. And Terrence Smith, who redshirted last year, a bigger receiver. So they're without four guys he anticipates going to be out there. KJ. Parker, though, he looked really good, really like that. We'll talk about him a little bit more when we get to some observations. but just starting with the quarterback spot. I think we know this thing's going to come down to the end. It's going to come down to the end of the season,
Starting point is 00:07:31 end of a practice in August. And I do not think we're going to see even when the depth chart comes out. I think you'll probably see something with the ore on there. Also remember, speaking of depth charts, we didn't get a depth chart last Big Ten during the Big Ten media days. And I do wonder if that's something that's going to continue here. So that just leads to wild speculation. Our part, that's what we do.
Starting point is 00:07:53 and definitely talking this thing through. And later this week, we're going to talk about that a little bit more and come with a post-spring depth chart of how things look going into the offseason. Quarterback, too close to call. Hank Brown had a better day. I'm still excited about Hecklinsky, but this race is going to be close. And I do have this thought lingering in my mind. If it comes down to this is going to be Kirk Farrance's choice,
Starting point is 00:08:20 I think we know where he's going to go, Hank Brown. maybe the safer option, a little bit more experience, better size, better traditional arm strength, those kind of things that Hank Brown would be the Kirk Farrant's quarterback. But if it comes down to the choice is going to be Tim Lesters, does that change the equation? We will see on that front. But it was not just quarterbacks on Saturday. We had a whole lot more. We're going to get into the rest of the players that popped.
Starting point is 00:08:50 Some more observations from spring practice is spring football. is over and we get ready for the off season in front of us. We'll talk more about what we saw at Kiddick Stadium on Saturday as we continue. Stay right there. This is Locked on Hawkeyes. Starting point is 00:10:17 Need to hire, this is a job for Indeed sponsor jobs. Trent Conn, I'm back with you once again on the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast. Your daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast, Thanks for being with us and making lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day. Let's get back into it and what we saw at Kinnick Stadium on Saturday. A lot of different angles to go.
Starting point is 00:10:40 We're going to talk about offense. We're going to talk about defense. A lot of different angles to get into. Let's go first to the offensive line. The light blood. And if you've been listening to me for a while, you know how much importance I put on the offensive line. You lose three guys off of last year's offensive line.
Starting point is 00:10:56 You feel good about Kate Peefer. You feel really good. about Trevor Loutk. But interesting, the starting offensive line, Cade Piper, was back over at guard. He was not at the center position. That meant that walk-on kill, Winter was the center for the Hawkeyes. Winter, I thought, held up okay. I thought he was perfectly fine.
Starting point is 00:11:17 We didn't get to see much of the run game. This was certainly a practice that was predicated on a lot of the passing game, working through a lot of the things that they were doing there, didn't get to see a running backs tackled down, things like that. So it was hard to get a glimpse, but your offensive line, Trevor Lough at the left tackle spot, Laten Jones at left guard, Kale Winter at center, Peeper at the right guard position, and then Jack Dotsler out on the right side. One thing that we're still waiting on is the decision is Michael Mislinski going to get his six years of eligibility.
Starting point is 00:11:47 And if he does, how healthy can he stay? This is a guy that has been banged up throughout the entirety of his career. Finally got to see a little glimpse of him last year as he was able to get out there and be a little bit part of that offensive line and help out at different spots. But if he is out there, how much does that change? Ms. Linsky started his career at center, he's played a lot of guard as well, what he's been able to practice and be healthy. But is it going to be Piper then kicks back inside to center?
Starting point is 00:12:14 And Ms. Linsky becomes your right guard. I think that's the most likely scenario that plays out. We heard a lot of good things as well about Lucas Allgaier. A little bit surprised maybe he wasn't out there in the starting lineup. But look, they're finding that right combination, finding the right moves with it. and going to that center position. I mean, we go back, Logan Jones, and we just saw go early in the NFL draft.
Starting point is 00:12:34 Remember how much he struggled in that first year with transition and how much he struggled in the simplest part, snapping the football. We saw a lot of issues there. He knew he was a butt kicker. I mean, you'd go back to that Michigan game during his sophomore campaign as he's just driving guys downfield and a great Michigan team and a great Michigan defense. And obviously that kind of ability is there,
Starting point is 00:12:54 but it's not just about the blocking. The other component that goes into his center. and Kate Peeper trying to make that transition, not an easy one, definitely making that move inside. Metschid Algeier would like to see a little bit more from him. And now it's about building depth. You know, they got a ton of true freshmen that have come in, big guys, guys that are going to take some retooling,
Starting point is 00:13:13 you know, reshaping their bodies in the way that obviously Iowa wants them to look and be built, but they come in, great starter sets with a lot of these different guys. I saw Carson Nielsen at the high school level really like what he saw to him. Hudson Parliament, what a great name. just a huge group. Rairden coming in and a bunch of them on that offensive line. But then that next year, those guys that are redshirt freshmen and sophomores, seeing what they can do to step up here along the offensive line. Measure the injuries to the wide receiver position.
Starting point is 00:13:39 That was definitely a big part of it. Would have loved to see Tony Diaz. Would have loved to see Evan James, both those guys. But KJ. Parker was a player that definitely took a big step forward. And KJ. Parker, we heard about him a lot a year ago during his redshirt freshman campaign. So a little bit of playing time, not a ton. but just a guy that seems to make plays. When he's out there, a guy that could go out and make some plays there.
Starting point is 00:14:02 Really good route runner. I like what you saw there, especially some of the deep routes and the little bit of shimmy that he has to his game, getting that a little bit of extra space. So definitely one of them I thought was interesting to see KJ Parker, now how he's going to fit with the additions that they have made overall on that front. Let's see what else we got in the notes here. We wanted to get into as we're going through and talking about the different groups. I want to go over to special teams.
Starting point is 00:14:27 And we have talked often about special teams, much like the quarterback spot. I think this is going to go to the end at the punter position. Phil Pot, another guy that I saw at the high school level a bunch back in his career, Waukee, Northwest. He is a guy. I think that maybe just a touch more consistent. Look, he's played the game. And with Boston and Everett coming over from Australia, not putting a helmet on until he showed up in Iowa City.
Starting point is 00:14:53 You know what I'm saying. and he's never played traditional American football. And to think that you're going to do that for the first time in front of 70,000 fan is Kinnick Stadium against Northern Illinois, if it's close, I guess I'd go with the veteran here. And that's not always the case. I think though Phil Pot can be adequately. He can be okay. He can be pretty solid.
Starting point is 00:15:14 And yes, we will love to have that elite level guy. I don't think you're going to see the same booming leg. And we go back even to Tori Taylor was once in a generation. But even Reese Dakin, I mean, you can. could see the leg talent. Now, it didn't always translate, and I think there was a lot of frustrations with Dakin and the way that he played, and we wanted more out of him. But the leg talent, excuse me, arm talent, the leg talent with these guys, not quite even at the level of a Reese Dakin. I don't think either of them at this point is there where it really
Starting point is 00:15:43 jumped off the foot of a guy like Dakin. Still can be solid. You just don't want to take that huge step back. And, you know, Iowa went through that transition now, what was it, 15 years ago, something like that. He had Radstetter out there and a few others. And it just, it wasn't what we're used to on this front. I don't think it's going to fall to those kind of depths. We'll see maybe this potentially could be something where we see two different guys also out there, directional. You go one direction and go with the boomer a different way, something to keep an eye on, certainly on that front. We only got to see one of the kickers on Saturday. That was Ozick, who comes in, Eli Ozick from North Dakota State. Speaking of
Starting point is 00:16:22 leg talent. Boy, we were absolutely true Stevens. Watching the ball come off his foot, it just, it was so different. And Iowa has been lucky. We've had so many good kickers throughout the years. And year after year, you're in really good shape. Of course, the benchmark, if you will, the highest standard was indicating what he was able to do throughout his career. But year after year after year, so many good kickers that have come through here, those it struggled a little bit. Now, they were also changing up the holders. That could have something to do with it, hit his first,
Starting point is 00:16:52 four field goals, I think, when they were working on the field goal spot. But would it just like to see in comparison, Cadenberg, and see what the difference look like between both of those guys. I still believe that Ozek is going to be the guy. He's eventually going to win that job. And in fact, between kicker and punter, I think the most likely of the four guys competing for the two jobs, I think OZick definitely has the top spot on that front.
Starting point is 00:17:17 A couple other things. Over to the defense, names that you should know. Now, this is the name we brought up last week when we were going through some more under the radar players to keep your eye on on Saturday. And it was Joseph Anderson. Joseph Anderson, now, he had the pick six against Fitzgerald and had that one. But it wasn't just that. He just got in the backfield. He was applying some pressure.
Starting point is 00:17:39 Still Joseph Anderson, he looks like a string beat. I mean, just he's got that frame, the track frame that we talked about a week ago. He was a big time track athlete down in St. Louis. and you can definitely see that out of him. There are certain guys that can never add weight. And I've talked about this before. One of my buddies from high school, he walked on at Iowa. He was an offense alignment.
Starting point is 00:18:00 He's a really good offense alignment. And you maybe have heard Kurt Farrants bring him up in the past, as my buddy Will Lack. And Will just couldn't get bigger. And it didn't matter because I go out to eat with him, and that dude could put food down and just eat and eat and eat. and drink a little bit too and carried in the kegs for us at parties. But with Will, and he's not alone, there are just certain guys that you hit a threshold,
Starting point is 00:18:28 and it doesn't matter how much you eat and what you're putting into your body and the training that you're doing all those things. You just hit something. And with Joseph Anderson, he still needs to add size. I don't think he can hold up as an every down guy at this point against the run. But could he be a third down specialist? I think absolutely. He definitely has that skill set.
Starting point is 00:18:47 He did it not just against the backup offensive line. He did it against some of the starters too. He had a really nice move against Dotsler. So he's a guy to keep an eye on maybe 20, 25, 30 snaps a game, something like that. I think you're going to see Joseph Anderson certainly make his name out there and be part of the rotation coming up this season. Speaking of guys to keep your eye on, another one we brought up a week ago, that is Marcelo Vitti, the true freshman who comes in at the safety position. It was an eye opener a couple weeks ago when the beat guy. got an opportunity to go in, excuse me,
Starting point is 00:19:20 watch a half hour of practice where he was out there playing the cash position as a starter. Now, guys were out. That was a part of it. But dude's going to play. And also with what we might be seeing here coming up with a potential five and five rule, how much that's going to dictate. So it goes from the old redshirt rule, right? If you play a game, red shirts burn unless there's an injury. Then it morphs into what we've seen recently. You can play up to four games yet still maintain that redshirt. status. And that might be going away. And they're going to simplify things. Five years to play. Five. Five for five. Simple as that. And if that's the case, Vitty's going to be out there a ton.
Starting point is 00:19:58 Special teams, maybe helping out the defense a little bit. Speaking of that defensive backfield, though, one thing that jumps out, speaking of size, Anthony Hawkins, just the link that he has, six foot three, really good athlete. He's a transfer from Villanova. And like the skill set that I think Phil Parker's going to be able to mold out of him. I think he's going to be really good. Tyler Brown was out there a ton to the James Madison transfer. Both those guys are going to be out there a bunch. What does that mean, though, for Zach Lutmer?
Starting point is 00:20:28 And that is the final piece to the puzzle because you can put him anywhere. He can go over the place. A lot of people believe that it is going to be free safety for him and they'll figure out what they're going to do at the cash position, be it vitty, if they want to go really young, some of the veterans that are out there. Is that a spot that makes a little bit more sense for Tyler Brown? we'll see on that front, but definitely Viti was a guy I thought that popped out there. You can see, that's the one where you're checking your roster again.
Starting point is 00:20:51 Oh, yeah, it's that guy. I mean, that's kind of what you're doing at these open practices and leading to that. And what other name I want to throw out there on the defense? And that is Burke Goucher. So we've talked so much now, feels like over the last three years, about the three linebackers that came in together. The three guys from over in eastern Iowa forming that triangle around Iowa, City and those three guys making their way in and they've all certainly had moments and had moments that
Starting point is 00:21:19 we've talked about a bunch in the early goings of their career with cam buffington Preston Reese Derek Weiskopf those three guys cam buffington i think is going to be out there this season race get back healthy he definitely in terms of just athleticism is definitely going to be a piece going forward Weisskoff doing a really good job and just those guys have done talked about a ton and because of that we kind of forgot about the next class and that's britt goucher and this is a guy that is also helping out. They have an embarrassment of riches at the linebacker position. And in a way, it's too bad the way football has morphed and changed throughout the years
Starting point is 00:21:55 and what I was done and evolving and turning into the 4-25 defense with only two linebackers out there in the cash position because, man, they got a ton of guys. And if it was the old days and we ran a 4-3 and everything was like it was back in the day and teams weren't throwing the ball like they do today, boy, this team would be stacked back there. Alas, that is not the case. but put that one in your back pocket. Remember that name because really like what we saw out of Burke Goucher on the weekend.
Starting point is 00:22:19 Those are some observations and some players that popped on Saturday. Coming up next, we take a look at the NFL draft as it has concluded and a record for the Iowa Hawkeyes. Trent, kind of back with you one final time, Lockdown Hawkeyes. Dot to sign up for the Everydayer Club. As we wrap things up, the NFL draft has wrapped up over the weekend.
Starting point is 00:23:09 Iowa with the program record seven selections in the NFL draft. We talked a little bit Friday evening about Logan Jones and Jennings Dunker going to the Bears and the Steelers, respectively, as a Bears fan, pumped up to have Logan Jones out there, helping solidify that offensive line. And Jennings Dunker, boy, you talk about a good bit. Do you ever spend any time in the Steel City? That seems like the kind of place definitely for Jennings Dunker. Now, do they have a Culver's out there?
Starting point is 00:23:34 Might be the question, but hell have one of those weird sandwiches where they put the crap on top of it. Yeah, those sandwiches. The pastrami's good. Yeah, pastrami's good. But Jennings Dunker, he'll find a way. I'd no doubt about it. Speaking of the Steelers. They followed it up by getting Caden Weegean.
Starting point is 00:23:49 If you saw him, he was on the golf course when it happened, got the call. His buddies should have pumped it up a little bit more. I mean, come on. I just got taken to the NFL draft. But Weijun going to be a fun one to watch and see how his skills translate in the return game at the next level. A little bit later on then we saw Bo Stevens go to Seattle. He'll pair back up with Mason Richmond, who was out there and won a Super Bowl ring with the Seahawks a year ago. Boe Stevens, he's going to be a buck kicker out there for the Seahawks.
Starting point is 00:24:16 Carson Shire, he goes to Arizona, and it's going to be an opportunity for him, even as a late selection in the draft, certainly to make that team. T.J. Hall goes to New Orleans, and then finally Maxwellan drafted by the Dolphins. And saw this one, somebody put this up on Twitter. I really like this thought. Can I get it early in practice? Maxwellan against his teammate for a couple months, Caden Proctor? There might be a little bit of juice there. It might be just a little bit of juice in that one. Then some guys that have signed Asprey agents.
Starting point is 00:24:48 This is from Chad Leickew of the Des Moines. Aaron Graves go into the Ravens, Mark Grinowski going to the Dolphins, Xavier Wampa to the Chiefs, Hayden Large to the Bears, and Ethan Hercott making his way also to the Chiefs along with Xavier Wampa. Xavier Wampa, tremendous athlete, and excited for him. You know, saw so many of his games at the high school level, obviously, throughout his collegiate career. It never quite got to the level we want, but we saw that final step forward this past season,
Starting point is 00:25:15 in a former five star and Xavier Wampi, I think he's got a chance maybe to stick there in KC. Could be a developmental guy with that great athleticism that he has. But always fun to keep an eye on this and just go through the NFL rosters and see so many of those Hawkeye players and what they're going to do. Mention coming up this week, we are going to dive into the depth charts post spring. Dep charts talking some Iowa football. Got some more news and notes over on the basketball front on the men's side as Ben McCollum looks to have the roster set for next season, holding that one final spot potentially for Tavion Banks. If it goes into the summer and there's a decision one way or the other with those Jucco guys,
Starting point is 00:25:52 and if they're going to get another year of eligibility and what that's going to mean and what that's going to look like if Iowa is going to go out and potentially get another player for the roster to fill it out to the complete 15. Speaking of filling out the rosters, the Iowa women still looking to fill out that roster, still in the single digits in terms of players, had some visit over the weekend with a player from Georgia. Is there anything that's going to pop out of that? And still looking because you don't want to go into a year just with nine players on your roster. And I know women's basketball is a little bit different where you don't have to have practice players at the same level you do like on the men's side because they have actual men.
Starting point is 00:26:30 A lot of their student trainers and the like that do practice with them. In fact, my cousin, we're going back now about a decade. He was one of those players that was out there. He was a six three center playing two-way basketball. Well, going up against the women. And so they do have that component where they do have some other people that come in and practice with the squad and against the squad to do different things. But you never want to go into a season with eight or nine players on your roster. Kind of seems like a rest of people were a really distressing season of a couple of injuries pop up.
Starting point is 00:26:59 So Jam Jetson is still working to fill out that roster. We'll have more about that coming up here this week. We are your daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast here, Lockdown Hawkeyes. Thanks for being with us as always. We'll be back with you tomorrow. Until then, go Hawks.
