While everyone else was scrambling in the transfer portal, the Iowa Hawkeye basketball team stayed surgical, filling needs, and not chasing the hype.
You are Locked-on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day.
Hey, welcome in. I'm Trent Condon, and this is the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast, your daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast.
Today, plenty to get into.
We're going to get a look back at what we've seen throughout the Iowa baseball team here over the last week,
along with the softball team as their season comes to a conclusion here.
We will talk a little bit about that and what we've seen on the diamond for both the softball team and the baseball team.
John Boyn Camp is going to join us, the Associated Press Writer on the Hawkeye Beat.
We'll get his perspective, spring football wrapping up.
We'll talk some football with John along with some Iowa basketball coming up here.
A commitment for the Iowa women's basketball team.
speaking of the transfer portal, that's where we begin today's conversation.
Iowa in the transfer portal.
This was not going out there and getting the most hype prospects.
Ben McCullum comes into this offseason, obviously, with a lot of returners.
They were one of the few portal teams out there that did not lose a bunch of players in the portal.
The headliner, obviously, Elverill Fulgaris moving on as he will continue and finish up his career at Louisville.
But overall, the impact that the elite eight.
made, run made obviously for this team and what they've been able to do leads them with not a ton
that they were hoping for. It was a lead guard and a center. And I understand when you look at the
two prospects that Iowa brought in, you look at just strictly the numbers that paints a picture of,
okay, they did all right. But when you dive in a little bit deeper to both of these guys,
I think it tells a completely different story. You start with Tyree Colton. And we've talked about
this a little bit before a guy that in the old way of college basketball 10 years ago,
this would have been a Big 10 player. You look at what he was as a high school athlete and
though he was not going to be a guy that Big 10 teams expected to come in and right away and be
an impactful player, he would have been a guy that would have showed up on somebody's roster.
But because of the transfer portal and the way that now teams fill their rosters out,
that has changed. So we had to go to Missouri Valley and had a very good freshman season.
But one thing that continues to jump out when you look.
and Tyree Coleman is how good he was this season during his freshman year in pick and roll situations.
And we know, obviously, that's what I was going to do.
They're going to be using that.
That is going to be a huge part of the offense.
And digging a little bit deeper as well to the big man, Andrew McKeever, who comes in.
7 foot three, we talked about the rebounding, the size that they need.
That showed up in the elite eight loss to Illinois.
Just the volume of size that Illinois was able to throw out the Hawkeyes as they pulled away in the final
eight minutes of that game.
But I found it really interesting article.
And this is now from, I think about a week and a half ago.
And it's from basketball under review.
Honestly, a place that had never gone before, but it had a Hawkeye angle.
I saw it posted on social media somewhere.
I clicked on it.
It really paints a picture of why McKeever can be such a huge part of this Iowa offense,
why he's such a good fit and the importance of fit.
24-7 had a long profile also on him with his high school coach.
some really good nuggets in there about him, the kind of work that he wants to put in,
and the kind of worker that he was, a kid that thought he was going to be a baseball player
at the collegiate level, and then suddenly shot up six inches and went from six foot three to
six foot nine very quickly and has now grown up to seven three in the middle.
The rebounding rates are incredible.
The number one offensive rebounding rate in the country a year ago.
That is definitely something that plays at his side.
But I've heard some people and seen some people that have the concerns about offensively
for a guy that didn't even average double figures offensively a year ago,
how is this going to fit with Iowa?
You got a big man.
You got a center.
And is that going to change the equation of the way that Iowa plays?
Well, certainly that is not the case.
Because you look historically at Ben McCullum squads,
that's not what they are.
And a couple of things popped out from this article.
First, post-ups.
And it's a question that I pondered earlier this season.
And though I think if you're an every day or you know, I like numbers,
I like to take a look at things.
Some of the more even advanced than what we talk about here,
it gets too deep for me.
I mean, it goes out there at a level that I struggle to wrap my mind around.
But here's a very simple one.
Post-ups. Post-up plays that they have in the offense,
number of times that they go into the post,
your traditional throw it into the block to the big man, right?
How we think of it in that fashion.
Iowa is in the bottom quartile of college basketball,
bottom 25% in college basketball
in doing that from a season ago.
That definitely marries with what we saw this year.
I mean, how many times did you remember just a simple post-entry pass that Iowa does?
It's not a big part of their offense.
So if you're thinking of McKeever like that, that's not how I was going to use him
because that's not how Ben McCollum uses his big guys in the middle.
And that's the area that McKeever actually struggled at.
What he is best at is in pick and rolls.
And during the course of the season against man coverage, pick and roll offense, he was shooting 80% from the floor.
Another one, you look at those numbers and say, boy, this guy struggled to shoot barely over 50% at 7 foot 3.
How is that going to work for a big guy now making the jump up to the Big 10?
Well, what he does best, pick and roll.
What is I would do?
Pick and roll.
It's about finding fits.
And both Coleman, the way he runs pick and roll and with McKeever, what he does on that short role, these are playing to the street.
ranks of two guys that were not top 50 players in the transfer portal.
We're not somebody yet.
They had interest from some big time programs, certainly on both of them.
I think that definitely says a lot about both of these guys.
Another thing I found interesting from this article, again, it's from a basketball under
review, is they were talking about those shooting percentages.
Well, something that he really struggled with was tips, tip shots.
And the way that Synergy, one of the places that puts together all these deep, deep stats
in college basketball.
A tip shot, he was second in the country
in tip attempts this year, behind only J.P. Estrella from Tennessee.
And with it, that percentage was not very good.
He shot 38% on those tip shots.
Now, some of them are unfair.
He had a couple examples in the article talking about that.
Another thing that Iowa just doesn't do.
Ben McCollum, maybe more importantly, doesn't do.
A McCollum team, how about this nugget,
has not had a tip rate, tip shots, tips up at the rim,
above 2.5% of their shot since 2019.
They get back defensively.
You don't have a ton of offensive rebounding that goes along with it.
But secondly, that's just not the way that they employ things.
That is not a strategy that they use.
One thing that Iowa is very good at,
Ben McCollum teams, I should say, are very good at,
historically is finishing around the rim.
Now, maybe that's a part of it.
And it's about going up and getting that rebound, settling yourself,
getting your feet underneath them and going up and trying to finish.
Well, that's definitely the case.
but year after year after year, Iowa, Ben McCollum, his squads are towards the top in the country in rim shooting.
That for a team that is not going to be built on, high flyers, not going to be built on your traditional big man throw it in the post and dunk.
That shows you the way that this offense works.
Finding the right fits.
And Iowa certainly did that.
It feels like with their two transfer portal additions.
The Iowa women make another, get another commitment.
Jocelyn Faison from Georgia has made her.
commitment. So we've talked a little bit about her really good fit, I think, to this squad. And you can
argue, is she a two, is she a three? She's going to fit. And becoming the ninth player now on this
roster, still looking for a couple more. As we talked about, I think it was on Monday on the show,
though, it was at that point where it felt like this was going to be a little bit more difficult
of selling different players. She has three years of eligibility, a top 100 player coming out
of high school. Didn't play a ton this year for Georgia, just eight minutes a game. She took seven
three-pointers. Didn't make one all year. I don't think it's a huge indictment of her offensive
skill set because of that. She only did shoot 31% though from three during her high school career.
What she is is an athlete. Somebody that's a really good defender, moves well, and something that
you can fit in there that's not going to have to have the ball in her hand a ton. It's not somebody
that is going to dictate the offense and need to be out there understanding their role. They thought
a year ago that they had a player that could be players off the bounce from the wing in Emily Rodriguez.
And we know that that did not materialize, obviously, for the Hawkeyes this year. This is another
player can get her own shot, has that athleticism, the speed off the dribble that can do those
kind of things, and a developmental piece on top of it with those three years of eligibility still
remaining. And Lassandra Barrett continues to use that Georgia pipeline at a big time level,
starting with Chit Chat Wright. Now Danny Carnegie coming in this season. And now you add
Jocelyn Fasin to the mix.
So pretty good trico coming in there with the Georgia connection for Iowa.
Up to nine players now on the roster for Jan Jensen Squad.
And they will look to fill a little bit more, maybe some news right around the corner.
Also on the women's basketball front.
We're going to talk some basketball plus spring football coming up next.
John Bowencamp is going to join us, the Hawkeye Beatwriter, with the Associated Press.
We'll talk with John as we continue.

Now, John Bowencamp joins us from the Associated Press.
John, let's go back to Saturday.
Brown or Hecklinski for you.
Who caught your eye?
You know, looking at what I saw them,
I can't make a choice.
right now. I really, I didn't think they were going to have a clear number one when this ended, and they
don't. And I think, and, you know, it was something that Tim Lester said, you know, when the court, when we saw
the coordinators early in the week, that, that it's a good problem to have, you know. But I do think by the
time the opener gets around, they will have a clear cut number one. But I think they're also going
have a pretty good number two. And so, I mean, I don't think they can go wrong either way. In my mind,
it's just a matter of we haven't seen the other 14 practices. So we don't know what that was like.
And so, but judging by everybody's comments and all that, it's still pretty wide open. And I think
it's going to be wide open still that final week of camp, you know, so. We heard so much buzz about
Tony Diaz throughout camp. And he got a little bit banged up there. But are you hearing the same things?
we've fallen for this before.
Caleb Brown comes in from Ohio State.
Played as a true freshman in that wide receiver room.
He's got to be a stud.
But did Farrantzic stole his virtues the way he did the...
Not like that.
No.
Is it different?
I mean, are you willing to put it out there that this is going to be different?
This is the one.
This is the one.
They got a real wide receiver out there to go along with Vander Zee.
I think it, to me, it's the production that he had before he came here.
You know, that he was productive at his previous place.
And so that says to me that he might be the real thing.
And so in listening to the guys talk about him,
the other players talking about it,
there's a lot more of a rave around him, I think.
So I'm thinking more,
they are,
I think they're a lot better right now at those two spots.
And I,
so if you,
once you decide on a quarterback,
it'll be interesting to see how they use all of that in the passing game.
I mean,
obviously you've got a really good tight end.
So now you,
you know,
if you've got two really good right receivers,
do they start throwing the ball a little bit more?
Do they start doing some different things?
And that'll be really interesting to see, you know,
as we get into September and as they get in the game.
What caught your eye on the defensive side of the ball, John?
You know, listening all through the week, you know,
and through the weeks and all that.
I mean, I still think there's just a lot.
Here's my thing.
The linebackers to me are going to be the really fun group to watch.
And, you know, I mean, I'm thinking of,
and I'm thinking Southeast Iowa here.
Cam Buffington and what he might be able to do.
And so that's going to be the one, because that's going to be one of the guys
that I really want to watch on this defense as they get into the fall and all that,
how good he can be.
You know, because I know, I mean, I know how good he was at the high school level.
I know what kind of athlete he is.
What can they do with him?
And he's going to be, I think he might be one of those guys in this defense that we're
going to really like when we get into the season.
And I thought it was interesting.
Phil Parker talking about him.
And it felt like, well, they'll probably rely on the veteran with Montgomery at the middle spot.
And Buffington, maybe he's the guy outside.
I don't know if that's going to be the case.
I think Buffington with that sideline to sideline speed that he has, he's going to be able to cover a lot up.
But to me, it doesn't matter if he can't have those guys occupying space up front and specifically a defensive tackle.
Is that the biggest concern with this Iowa football team?
It is to me, defensive tackle, lack of depth.
Hawthorne, the one guy.
that we know he was out for most of the spring,
just up front because we've seen this a couple of times
throughout the 27 years.
When they're not good at defensive tackle,
they're not good defensively.
Right.
And I think, you know,
and I said that at beginning of the camp,
that that was that whole line
and getting that back to that where you can have the depth
they've had in the past,
that that was going to be the biggest,
one of the bigger keys of the spring.
And I don't know if they kind of figured that out yet.
So that might be one of those things that,
as you go in the, in the, you know, in August, they're still going to be kind of looking at,
but they do have to be better up front. I mean, like you said, I don't think you want to rely on,
you don't want to have your linebackers put in a bad situation. To me, defensively,
that is going to be one of the biggest keys is how that group comes together. And I said that, too,
you know, on both fronts, offensive and defensive line, how both of those groups come together
because so much what Iowa does relies on all of that. And so did they learn,
a lot about those two areas
in camp. I don't know, but we're going to
find out, and I think we'll find out more
as we get into, as we get into August
and we start talking about this team more
again. John, when you watch
Tide-end Vonamy, by saying
his name right, Vanami, Vanami. Vanami.
Vanami.
DJ Venominy. You had a breakout year last
year. Really had a nice year. Does he
look to your eyes
like he's about to join the
list of Iowa tight ends that
go on and make an impact at
the next level. Have you seen enough of him to see you, he does, okay. Yeah, I think so. I mean,
I mean, obviously he's going to be, he, I think he's going to be a big part of this offense.
And, you know, and so it's just, and so I think, yeah, I think he can be. And I mean,
there's, there's going to be a lot of, you know, there's going to be a lot of attention on him
when we get back into the season just because of what he's been able to do so far. And, you know,
kind of the talk around him, you know, when you were listening to other players, you know, in the
times we've had with them here in the last couple weeks.
They all like him, you know, so you can kind of see that he's really kind of standing out
right now. And I think he's going to be a lot of fun to watch this spring.
And the reason I bring them up is obviously Iowa had seven players drafted over the weekend
in the NFL draft. And when I'm looking at lists of, of the next group of Hawkeyes to
hear their name call, when he's, he's already out there for next year. So he would, he's a red
shirt sophomore, so he's eligible to go. That's why I asked that. Anyway, do you just
he appeared like that to you too, Tre?
Oh, absolutely.
I mean, you think of a guy that was playing quarterback at high school just a couple of years back.
You had a great year last year.
When you heard Lester talking about his blocking belt, he is not just, this is a past catcher.
It's kind of that flex hybrid wide receiver type.
Oh, this is a guy that can do it all.
And we know the way the NFL's camps look at it.
I think Trevor Loutk is also going to be a guy that's going to have an opportunity
here.
His name called, and O'Kid Piper.
Kirk mentioned that too after practice.
I thought that was interesting.
The Piper is their center.
I think started today after a lot of shuffling around throughout that way.
And questions.
Joe. Yes, no doubt. Hey, John, before we let you go, want to talk a little bit of basketball with you.
Haven't had an opportunity since Iowa went into the portal. Illinois State, we know you watch some NBC hoops as well with Coleman, Tyree Coleman coming in.
And then McKeever out of St. Mary's, your thoughts on what Ben McCollum did in the transfer portal.
I thought he got guys that fit what he wants to do. And, you know, and so, again, they didn't have to do a lot because, and I think it said this last time, there was going to be a lot of addition.
just within the roster that you were going to see guys take that next step for, you know,
tape stage from this year to next year and Cooper Koch from this year to next year.
And so they didn't really need a lot when you think about it.
And I think they got two guys that really fit with what he wants to do.
He was very, I think he was very selective in his shopping and then portal, as I call it Amazon.
But it's like I think he did a really good job of finding guys that fit what he was.
wants to do and it'll be interesting to see how they they kind of work in but I think it's going to be a lot
fun to watch this group and I think it's going to be a lot of fun to watch this group grow from
November to March like this last he did.
John Bowencamp Associated Press, Iowa College Hoops.com.
That's where you can find him and read him and hear him periodically here every couple of weeks
with Miller and Condon.
John, thanks for jumping on again.
Appreciate it.
We'll talk to you down the road.
See you, buddy.
Yep, have a good one.
You're the same, John Bowen Camp as we check in on Hawkeye topics.
So last week we talked with Addison Bouton with the Polk County I Club.
I saw him standing outside the door yesterday.
That's right.
Yes, as he was in with Sean and Lucas.
Next week, he said at the time that we talked to him,
going to have most of the major coaches, Coach McCollum wasn't going to make it.
Yeah.
That has changed.
I saw that.
He told me that.
Yes.
Coach McCollum is going to be there on Wednesday.
So if you're making your way, or you wanted to hear from McCollum, now you'll get the opportunity,
Puck County I Club.
Just give it a Google search.
You want to look for tickets.
You can find them there.
Periscence will be there.
Lisa Bluter will be there.
Jen Jensen?
I thought.
Yes, yeah.
Jan Jensen, not Lisa Bluder.
And of course, Ben McCollum now will be there also.
So good news there.
And I know the Polk County people are very excited about that.
Absolutely.
Unless you wanted to go listen to Josh Sash,
people are going to be disappointed.
He's not going to be there, but you get the head, man.
So let me follow up on John said.
When it comes to Koch and Sage,
buying stock in one of them for next year, which one?
Well, stock for what?
Just to have a bigger impact on next year's team.
Oh, boy, that's, I think, incredibly difficult.
I guess I would still lean Koch because, you know, he's still going to play a ton.
I think Sage can play it.
I think he is too, but I think there's going to be more minutes for Koch.
And the back third of the year, Cooper shot the ball incredibly well.
He did.
He was lights out from behind the arc.
Can he add another dimension to his game?
can it be a little bit more off the bounce
than strictly that corner three
three point shooter is there more to his
game the versatility of sash
or of sage is incredible
I mean that guy absolutely
what we saw from him on the defense event
and both of those guys
go back to where they were at the beginning of the year
and the kind of defense they were playing down the stretch
that gets you even more excited about them
what they can do on that end of the floor
because I would guess back in September
when camp started they would not be considered
plus defenders
yeah true
By the end of the year, at minimum, you have to be.
They're pretty good.
Yeah.
And maybe there's even more upside on the defense event for both of them.
Good stuff there as we have finished up the conversation after John Bowen camp.
That was on my radio show earlier today, Miller & Conn, which you can catch each weekday from noon to two on the Iowa Sports Radio Network with stations all across the state, Sioux City, Iowa City, Cedar Rapids and the Quad Cities, along with our flagship 106.3 KX&O each weekday from noon until 2.
Coming back on the other side, we go to the diamond softball, baseball.
A quick look at the Hawkeyes and what could be a devastating midweek loss for the Hawkeyes on the baseball diamond.
That's next as we continue, Locked on Hawkeyes.
Back with you one final time here, Lockdown Hawkeyes.
I'm Trent Condon.
Thanks for being with us and making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day.
Rapid things up on the Diamond as the Iowa softball team will see their regular season come to a conclusion coming up.
weekend and still a possibility that they get into the Big Ten tournament would have to win the Big Ten tournament, become an NCAA tournament team. Currently a game over 500 overall, six and 15 in the Big Ten. They'll wrap things up this weekend at home at Pearl Field as they'll face off against Purdue. Now, if they sweep the Boilermakers, they are going to be in the Big Ten tournament. Of course, would have the tiebreaker against the boiler makers that that plays out. Purdue, though, been pretty decent this year. They are a 9 and 12 on the season, 32 and 18 overall.
all be a tall task for them to get the sweep on that one, but would punch their ticket in to the
single elimination tournament. Obviously, a bit of a transition this year for the softball program
and the softball team. Lost a ton off of last year's team, but they'll be wrapping things up.
Got a nice victory. Some names from around the state that you definitely know, but you look at the
coaching staff in year number one. I think a lot of successes out there and still building things up
for Stacey Bay Johnson and getting that program back to what we once saw. Over on the baseball diamond,
You know, after the weekend, I was excited to talk about the sweep against Indiana.
I was able to catch a couple of those games with the Johns on the call on the radio side of things.
And was excited after the sweep of Indiana.
And then it comes crashing down in the middle of the week as they fall to Illinois State.
Now, Illinois State's not an awful team.
They're 130th in the RPI.
They're 27 and 17 this season.
So this is not a brutal loss in like some of the midweek losses that we've seen in the past.
However, Iowa, it was still going to be an incredibly difficult path.
for them to become an NCAA tournament team.
But in good shape to be in the Big Ten tournament,
12 teams will qualify this year for the baseball tournament.
And they're changing up the structure a little bit.
The top four teams will qualify into the quarterfinals.
Seeds 5 through 12 will play in a double elimination bracket
to get then into the quarterfinals.
So get a little bit, look at a little bit different in the structure of that one.
I was going to finish up the season as they have a game still remaining this year.
coming up this weekend after that midweek loss.
The first midweek loss of the season,
do need to put that out there as well.
They got Illinois coming to town to DeWank Bangs Field starting on Friday.
Then they'll face off against St. Thomas with the midweek game,
their final midweek game of the year on the road at Purdue,
excuse me, at Nebraska,
and then Purdue to finish off the season as they will face them in Principal Park.
Saw that a year ago in a fun series over here.
If Iowa could have just got another one of those games,
maybe would have been a little different for them via tournament team.
Still a long road, I think at minimum, 10 games remaining here in the regular season.
Even with a glimpse and a glimmer of hope without winning the Big Ten tournament,
I was probably going to have to go 8 and 2.
And at least two of those wins need to come against Nebraska,
who's 34 and 11 on the year, ranked in the top 25 and have been basically throughout the course of the year.
They're 12th in the country in RPI and obviously would boost up the Hawkeyes' resume at this point in time.
So plenty of work to be done for.
Iowa to get there.
But in a team that has battled this year, the pitching depth just hasn't been there.
The best freshman coming in this year hasn't thrown a pitch for them all season long.
You know, Rick Heller, congratulations with the sweep against Indiana.
Got his 11th 100th career victory.
Rick Heller is still doing things and doing it well in a program that's not well funded,
go to up programs and certainly invest a whole lot more.
Hawkeye fans, you should be very lucky that we have a guy like Rick Heller running the program
and try to keep that thing respectable year after year after year,
qualifying for the Big Ten tournament season after season.
I know we'd all love to see a little bit more,
but Hawkeyes definitely got a good one with that.
And the schedule here at the end of the season, pretty tough.
Illinois, 500 this season, they're 21 and 21.
Four mentioned Nebraska, 34 and 11, and then Purdue.
A surprise in the Big Ten this year, they are 28 and 15.
That'll do it for today, back with you tomorrow with a whole lot more Hawkeye talk.
