Special guest Tom Kakert joins to tackle Caitlin Clark’s WNBA journey, frustration with controversial officiating, and her outsized impact on league visibility. Starting point is 00:00:00 The 5-and-5 era is here and college athletics will never be the same. Iowa's roster management, recruiting, and revenue-sharing strategy now matter as much as any coaching and development. The Hawkeyes must adapt fast to stay ahead. You are Locked-on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. I'm Trent Condon, and this is the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast. your daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast.
Starting point is 00:00:38 Today's episode is brought to you by Odu. Great organizations win because operations matter. That's why you should get Odu. Try for free today at Odu.com slash lockdown. Well, breakdown of the NBA draft tonight. Where is Bennett starts going to go? We'll break things down and get ready for an Iowa Hawkeye going in the first round anticipated this evening.
Starting point is 00:01:00 The countdown to kickoff continues 74 days away. We'll take a look at number 74 on the online. Iowa football roster and the impact coming up this season. We'll also be joined by Tom Kaker from hawkeye report.com. We'll talk about former Hawkeye, Caitlin Clark, what's happening for her in the WMBA, and go back in memory lane with Tom Kakert and some Hawkeye great events that have happened over the last 30 years. But we begin today with a look at a new rule that is being implemented in college
Starting point is 00:01:27 athletic, something that we've bannied about here on Lockdown Hawkeyes, quite a bit here over the last couple of months. The NCAA Division I cabinet unanimously approved a new five-year age-based eligibility model on Tuesday. This will go into effect for this upcoming season, something that is going to be incredibly impactful for everybody. And this is not just a rule change that is happening in the money sports. This is not just for football and basketball. This goes across all the different athletic competitions that are out there in the simplest terms. What this means is once your eligibility window begins, you have five years.
Starting point is 00:02:03 to compete, and that is it. There are no more waivers for red shirts. There are no waivers to get a six year of eligibility. And good news for Iowa Hawkeye Offense Alignment Michael Mislinski, as he was added and get his six year of eligibility. But what it means is once your calendar starts, you have five years to compete. It doesn't matter how many entries you have.
Starting point is 00:02:23 Doesn't matter different things that impact your life. Your eligibility window begins, and then it ends after five seasons. Meaning that red shirts have gone away. There is no more worrying about red shirts. and we look back at last season for Iowa basketball, Trey Thompson had some illness, who had some injuries,
Starting point is 00:02:39 and he redshirted that season. Well, that is not going to matter anymore. That has gone away. You just have five years to go. Now, there are going to be circumstances that are going to be tough guys that have injury-plagued careers, have something happened during the course of their career that is going to impact.
Starting point is 00:02:55 But overall, this is moving back to simplifying things. We've had the last couple of seasons in football, this weird rule where you're, able to play up to four games throughout the course of a season, yet still maintain your red shirt status. That has gone away on top of it. And for a developmental program like Iowa, that has some guys that come in and we look at an impact of the guy say like Yosea Epinessa. Iowa was able to keep his red shirt status a year ago by playing in just four games, but could he help them a little bit more if he would have been playing eight games or even all 12 games and
Starting point is 00:03:29 being part of the rotation? You don't have to worry about that impact anymore. And it also leads to basketball and that side of things. And maybe the biggest impact is going to be happening on the basketball hardwood going forward. Now, another big question I know that is out there. And I saw it right away when this ruling came down from the NCAA. Is this going into effect? One of the biggest things, well, what does this mean for the guys
Starting point is 00:03:51 that just graduated or maybe most importantly, just exhausted their college eligibility, Tavion Banks for Iowa being the example that a lot of people are looking at at the most? that is not going to impact right now what is happening the guys that have just finished up their eligibility. So for Tavian Banks, he is not blanketed in. He is not going to get another year of eligibility unless a court case is coming. And that is something that sounds like it is already in the works for the group that is exhausted their eligibility that there's going to be court cases coming.
Starting point is 00:04:23 We knew this was going to happen. It is the new reality of college athletics. But the way the model is currently set up, this does not mean the Tavian Bank. is going to get another year unless a court decides that that is going to be something. We'll talk about that potentially down the road. So what does this mean? And what does this mean for the players? Well, we had two guys.
Starting point is 00:04:43 I mentioned Trey Thompson for the Hawkeyes this past season. He redshirted. He came in in the same class of the freshman from last year, Tate Sage and Trevin, Europe. All those guys now have four years of eligibility remaining. All four of those players with four years still to play. This will also impact some different guys in different ways from Cooper Koch, another guy that had a redshirt year, his freshman season, played last season in his second year on campus, a redshirt freshman.
Starting point is 00:05:09 He still just has three years of eligibility. What does this mean for the upcoming seniors this year? Kail Combs, what does it mean for him? Doesn't mean he's got another year of eligibility. A guy now like Andrew McKeever, who comes in as a redshirt junior, still with two years of eligibility, but the five and five rule means he still just has two years. So that is going to matter. It matters when you graduated in your high school class. That is going to be the impact that we're going to see in this rule.
Starting point is 00:05:39 Mention Yosea Pinesse on the football side of things and what the impact is going to be, but also the guys that played early on in their career and played as true freshmen, there's going to be another year of eligibility that's going to be tacked on, another year for those guys to have a chance. It's going to be different. I was going to have to adapt. And also now these coaches as they're putting their rosters together, this is another impact that they're going to have to look and looking forward to what it is down the road for them,
Starting point is 00:06:04 what it's going to be if for Iowa basketball, Kail Combs is able to come back for another season. Do we get another year of KAN Maniow? And does he get another year of eligibility of what that means for high school recruiting also going forward? A lot of moving parts, a lot of moving pieces for Ava Hyde. Suddenly, now she's going to have not the two years left on campus, but potentially three years left on campus. So that is what is in front of us. It is going to be absolutely huge, though. Roster management, setting things together for all these coaches.
Starting point is 00:06:35 And again, this impacts not just the big three that we talk about. How about wrestling? How many times have we had guys that feel like, you know, I think this guy can help out this year. He can be a guy definitely that can redshirt and not have to redshirt this season and help out. But is he going to be an all-American? Can he compete for a national championship? Well, now those considerations fall by the wayside five years to play your sport. That is what it's going to be going forward.
Starting point is 00:07:00 Definitely a big change and a big impact for Iowa athletics and college athletics as a whole. We're coming back here on the other side of lockdown Hawkeyes and we're going to go down memory lane. We're going to talk a little bit about Caitlin Clark and what's happening with her and just what has been an incredibly frustrating year, even as successes have come her way, the WMBA, Caitlin Clark, and a look back. We're looking back because my radio partner, Ken Miller is retiring on Wednesday. June 24th will be his final day on the radio after 30 years, exactly 30 years on the year. He is stepping away and going into retirement. Well, we went down memory lane with Tom Kaker last week and thought that would be a fun trip down memory lane for you as well. Some of the biggest impacts are in Ken's 30 years on covering the Hawkeyes, the Cyclones,
Starting point is 00:07:47 and just being on the radio in Central Iowa, now across the state of Iowa on the Iowa Sports Radio Network. We're going to go down memory lane and some of those memories. coming up on the other side. Tom Kaker joins us as we continue. Stay right there. This is Locked on Hawkeyes. Kirk Farrants has been doing it for the Hawkeyes for a long time, finding those right people, the people that embody, Iowa football, absolutely huge. And some of the best organizations make the moves that they make aren't always the splashiest ones.

Starting point is 00:09:23 This is a job for Indeed, sponsor jobs. Let's get to Tom Kaker. Tom joins us, HockeyReport.com on 3Media slash rivals. He joins us, Tom, Trent and Ken. Thank you for coming on. How are you, Tom? I'm good. I'm a little sad.
Starting point is 00:09:42 It's our last time, Kenny. Yeah, it's been great ride, buddy. Yep, love coming on over the years. So it's been a treat. So I'm going to miss it. Yeah. Thank you for what you've done, honestly. You're great content, and I know Hockey fans appreciate having you on,
Starting point is 00:09:56 as Trent and I do. You know what? I want to start with you before we get into. I want to start with Caitlin Clark because something's got to be done here, not with her, with the official. She filed out yesterday. Two of the worst files that weren't even fouls. I mean, the gal's name was Canada. I looked her up.
Starting point is 00:10:12 She went to UCLA. She was a first round pick. But she just blatantly would run through Caitlin. Caitlin's got her arms up trying to get out of the way. Fowling Caitlin Clark, file 22. They filed her out for two of the worst calls I've seen. Why is the league continuing to officiate her one way? And seemingly everybody.
Starting point is 00:10:30 I sound like a fan. And everybody else the other way, Tom, it's just, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's unfathable to be how the league treats their, their meal ticket. Oh, by the way, the league's expanding to 70-something games. That's not because Angel Reese, as everybody knows. Yeah. It's because of 22. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:46 Why are, why are they going out of the way to make it so difficult for her? It is so weird because, really, the NBA, and you know, stars get the whistle. Yes. And they, you know, not. overtly, but they'll take care of, you know, they take care of Michael Jordan back from the day. You know, it's not, like, not going to touch foul a guy out. I mean, even like, you know, Wemby. I mean, you know, it's just stuff like that. They take care of the stars in this league. It's just like, they're out to get her. And I don't, maybe she's just too demonstrative sometimes
Starting point is 00:11:25 out on the court and she shows up the officials and they don't like it. So they're, going to get back at her. Maybe there's some of that. I don't know, but it is, it is weird how that, her relationship in that league is just, it's very strange. It's just, it's, it's like they don't want her around. And I'm like, you guys realize she's the meal ticket. She's what's putting butts in seats.
Starting point is 00:11:53 And she's giving you guys a level of relevance that you never had as a league because she plays in it and it's like they're they resent it you know they're privates now they're in private jets because of her i give you credit you and if you if you board it from somebody else um you coined her box office and that was spot on yeah and that was back when i think she was a junior at iowa uh and she's been box office was prior to that but i heard you say for the first time so you get full marks for it but you were right on the money tom yeah she just is she puts she puts butts and beats and, you know, some other league opened up, you know, that she got involved with, boy, they'd be hurting.
Starting point is 00:12:38 They would just be hurting. They would. Because she puts fans, fans, they love her or hate her. They want to watch her. Tom, we've been doing a lot of reminiscing. And as we're talking about Caitlin Clark, as we're coming to the end for Ken, there can't be a story that topples what that was, the back-to-back final fours in Iowa sports
Starting point is 00:13:01 over the last 30 years. It's something unlike it. And as you kind of reminisce and look back at the Caitlin experience and being there. And Tom, I know you were there plenty of times when starting her freshman year when nobody was in the stands. And then what that thing turned into, it's just unlike anything.
Starting point is 00:13:18 And now when we look back, we're never going to see anything close to what we went through with the Caitlin Clark experience. Yeah, you'd like this thing. that maybe there will be again there'd be something like that, but that's it's a supernova. Yeah, it is. You know, it's Haley's Comet, it's once a lifetime
Starting point is 00:13:33 kind of thing that she just kind of blew into town. I mean, I can remember thinking, well, nobody will ever tap on Megan Gustafin. Right. And Caitlin Clark walked in and said, hold my beer, you know, right away. She's just otherworldly. It was like,
Starting point is 00:13:50 you know, you'd see those things at the road games. It was like the Beatles coming through town. I mean, that's what it was like. It was like the people lining up at hotels just to get a glimpse of her. And it is, it was incredible what went on. And I don't think we'll ever see anything like that again. No, I'm with you.
Starting point is 00:14:12 What would be the next one on the list? Boy, last 20 years. Yeah. Boy, the Orange Bull win for. Yeah, the 20, well, the undefeated regular season. Iowa football. I think that's probably it. The 2015 season,
Starting point is 00:14:32 it's an improbable ways. They've spent some games and just how they made it through. And then, you know, losing that title game against Michigan State, you know, 22 play drive, 92 yards or whatever it was. And I think that's probably because that was just an otherworldly season for, Iowa football, just so unexpected coming off that 2014 year. And the Kirk, I thought we needed to talk, press conference, and all the pummelts around the program.
Starting point is 00:15:08 And they just go on that magical run. You know, speaking to talk and they needed to talk, I can't get over the change because back when we started, it's like if they could have, they would have built a wall around Iowa City, you know, especially from Fort Kinnock. Right, exactly. Now yesterday, I see you can't. guys are getting football players to talk in the middle of June, which is so unlike Iowa back in
Starting point is 00:15:32 the day. And it's so refreshing because, you know, you got to feed the beast right. And the beast is dying for some content. And then there's the media yesterday talking Iowa football with some of the players. I thought that was great. What a change. Yeah, it is. It's been such a change in the attitude of Iowa football in particular, but also the basketball teams are open and, you know, available to us. I mean, I've been doing a bunch of, I've got, I'm going to talk to the new quarterback coach next week for a podcast. And I'm going to talk to Seth Wallace and talk to Jane Arvell this past week for a great
Starting point is 00:16:09 interview with him about, about Iowa football and everything. And they're just been so much more open and willing to talk. And, I mean, I just, I'm putting up a podcast here shortly with Beth Getz for half that I got hurt today. So, I mean, it's just, they've been much more open and accessible. And I think that's a good thing. I do too. You want people to get eyes on your product and hear about your product.
Starting point is 00:16:37 We played this game a little bit earlier. The best, over the last 30 years since Ken's been on the year, over the last 30 years since 1996, the biggest what if moment. When you look back, it could be a particular game. It could be a moment, a decision, athletic department, an individual sport. When you look back upon it, and maybe trajectory change. paging for Iowa athletics or that particular team. Is there one moment that you look back upon over the last 30 years for the Hawkeyes, Tom?
Starting point is 00:17:04 And I'm going to throw it, of course, to Ken as well. But what jumps out to you first? Boy, I got it. The old sliding doors moment. Boy, I don't know. Northwestern Ricky Stansy? Yes, that's probably it. See, and I pushed back on that because remember that year, Alabama and Texas,
Starting point is 00:17:28 were also undefeated. There was only two teams that played for the national championship. Even an undefeated 12-0 Iowa team, they would not have played for the national championship. But they would have gone to the Rose Bowl, right? They would have. Yeah. Yeah, it would have been an interesting conversation.
Starting point is 00:17:43 And it would have been, and it would have been a fascinating game in Columbus, Ohio. Yes. Yep. You've been more fascinating. Here's one, here's a basketball one for you, Trent. what if what if
Starting point is 00:17:57 what if Fran took that team that almost beat Tennessee that rallied from deep down in the NCAA tournament and goes to a sweet 16
Starting point is 00:18:08 the trajectory of Fran in Iowa basketball absolutely I think it is you get that you get the sweet 16
Starting point is 00:18:19 you get that moniker talking point goes away the momentum yes the questions that are asked of all the players leading into the following tournaments,
Starting point is 00:18:26 including when they lose to Oregon and get run off the floor. Oregon, not the first team ever to not have to play a first round game to get there in the COVID-2020 tournament. There's a lot of those, but that I think is a big one basketball-wise they point to,
Starting point is 00:18:39 or maybe if they didn't hire a snake oil cylinder and Steve Alford and they would have went to, was it Kevin Stallings? Was he the other finalist for the job? If whatever reason Bullsby would have been enamored with him, maybe what could have been? Because as awful as a human as it sounds like Kevin Stallings was, a guy could coach some basketball.
Starting point is 00:18:54 basketball. Yeah. I've been told that Bob kind of had that thing. I heard that too. Like, that was done in January. I got one for both you guys.
Starting point is 00:19:08 I got another one for both you guys. What if Stoops would have, what if we got the contract right away instead of making them wait? And obviously, I think it worked out the better. I think it worked off for the better. But Stoops wanted,
Starting point is 00:19:21 what was, refresh my memory, Tom. He had a deadline that he had, to sign this contract now or I'm out of here. Something like that, right? Yep, yep. And he had, he had a choice.
Starting point is 00:19:34 And, well, you didn't have a choice. Iowa was like, hey, we'll get back to you. We got to go. We promised Kirk Farrant's we'd do an interview with them. And he was like, well, Oklahoma's told me I need to make a decision. So I'm going to take the bird in the hand. And that's what he did. And boy, what if.
Starting point is 00:19:49 What if, right? Oh, my God. He's that one in national chief. That is a sliding. doors. That's the sliding doors moment. Yeah, and he won a national title in year two. And Kirk Farns was struggling to win this third football game. He was. You know. Were you at the Alamo Bowl? I know we got to go to break. Tom, listen, I wish we could continue on. It's been a
Starting point is 00:20:11 wonderful, wonderful, I don't know how long, two decades of talking to Tom Caker on a variety of shows, but certainly locked in on Friday with Trent and I here. I know you're going to continue on Fridays with Trent and his new partner. But Tom, sincerely, thank you, man. Your great content, I appreciate it. And best of luck. And I'll continue to read you at hawkireport.com.
Starting point is 00:20:33 Thank you, buddy. Thanks, buddy. Yep, good to talk to you. Tom Kekert, HockaiReport.com. Fun trip down memory lane with Tom Kakert and some of the things that have happened over 30 years on the radio for my radio partner, Ken Miller. Again, Wednesday, June 24th will be his final day on the air. You can catch us on 106.3 KX&O in Des Moines along with the Iowa Sports Radio Network,
Starting point is 00:20:52 stations in Sioux City, Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, and the Quad Cities our show each weekday from noon until two. Coming back on the other side, the countdown to kickoff continues 74 days for Iowa football. We'll take a look at number 74 and its impact on the team. Also, we will talk Bennett Sturts. The NBA draft comes up tonight. Where Sturt's going to go? We'll make our predictions next on Lockdown Hawkeyes. Running a business shouldn't feel like you're trying to connect a bunch of systems that were never designed to work together.
Starting point is 00:21:27 One app for accounting, another for inventory, another for sales, and somehow none of them talk to each other. That's where Odu comes in. Odo is an all-in-one business management software that brings every part of your business together in one powerful platform. From sales and accounting to inventory and marketing, everything works in one place, helping your team move faster, stay organized, and focus on growing the business instead of managing software.
Starting point is 00:21:53 The best organizations know that success isn't just about talent. It's about having everyone work toward the same goal. And that's true in sports, just like in business. You take a look at what I was done on the recruiting trail in basketball, Ben McCollum finding somebody a little bit under the radar in Doherty before he flows up. It wasn't a reactionary move. The organization, Hawkeye Hoops, had a vision, stuck to it. And now you're seeing the results because everyone was working from the same playbook.
Starting point is 00:22:21 And that's what Odu can do for you. Great organizations win because operations matter. That's why you should get O-Doo. Try for free at O-D-O-D-O-D-com slash Lockedon. That's O-D-O-O-O-O-com slash Locked-on. O-D-C-com slash Locked-on. Trent, kind of back with you once again here on the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast. Starting point is 00:23:18 As we put a cap on things, a couple of topics ringing around. Let's start with our countdown to kick off as we are down to 74 days away from the opening of the Iowa football season. Number 74 on this year's roster, Bode McCaslin, a sophomore 6'4-299 pounds out of St. Charles, Illinois, guy helping out in the interior of that offensive line, good size. Can he maybe make himself into a tackle? Haven't seen much of them, but something definitely to put in the back of our minds going forward. And when we talk about number 74, well, a couple of great ones here recently. Tristan Wirves, of course, were number 74, the only freshman to start a tackle for the Hawkeyes and the Kirk Farrant's era.
Starting point is 00:23:57 Number 74, Aaron Campman. There's another name from the past. And a great number 74 is to wear the uniform on that front. And finally, we go to tonight's NBA draft. That's right. It is mock draft season is over. Tonight we will find out exactly where Bennett Sturtz is going to go. Taking a look at the different mock drafts that are out there at this point in time.
Starting point is 00:24:17 You see a bunch of different numbers definitely that are there for him, where he's going to go. what kind of fit is he going to be. The likelihood is we're going to see him likely in something in that late teen range, early 20, something like that that potentially looks like it's going to be the case of what we're going to see for him. Honestly, as somebody that is not deep into the draft, is not deep into kind of what we see on this front fit style, those kind of things, I can't find a good range. But one thing after the way that he shot the ball during.
Starting point is 00:24:52 Combine. You definitely saw some big time things. Now, there's some talk of maybe potentially number 16 to Memphis. That could make sense for them. They'll be looking at a guard. If they're moving on from John Morant, that could be something definitely that makes a whole lot of sense. Also in that range, you have the Thunder, which is always a good fit to go in the way that that organization is. They have picked number 17. About 20, potentially going there. Now, with what we saw at a Harper, probably not a fit on that front. Seen some talk about number 21, potentially going to the Pistons. the number one seed from the east this past season, and that could be a range. We'll see tonight, though, looking forward to that and hearing the name called a Bennett Sturts.
Starting point is 00:25:30 Great stories, too. I saw a picture earlier today on social media of Bennett Sturts and the suit that he's going to wear this evening and inscribed inside. They got a logo from his high school, from Northwest Missouri State, from Drake, and for Iowa. Really cool one there. And of course, Ben McCollum, going to be along with Bennett Sturt's here this evening and what that's going to lead for him, continuing to sell, continuing to definitely go that route of what is going to happen with this Iowa program going forward. And Bennett Sturts, just what a story it was for Bennett Sturts to make the decision. Could have been more money out there, could have gone all in and made, take in the biggest NIL deal that would have been there and made millions of dollars more at a different program.
Starting point is 00:26:11 But the relationship that he had with Ben McCullum to say no to that extra money that was out there going with the fit that made the most sense for the guy that helped bring him, up from the Division 2 level. And now to become in first round NBA draft pick, just how awesome that's going to be. And it's just fun having somebody that's in the green room, somebody that's going to be there, and something that us as Iowa basketball fans haven't had a ton of that, certainly throughout the years of having a guy that's going to be talked about
Starting point is 00:26:38 at that level. And hopefully everything goes right. Bennett starts goes to a place that works out well and starts what hopefully will be a very, very long NBA career.
