Starting point is 00:00:00 The summer grind is underway in Iowa City. And if the Hawkeyes are going to take the next step in 2006, it starts right now. Which players need the biggest jump in strength, speed, and development before fall camp. We take a look at it today. You are Locked on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day. Hey, welcome in. I'm Trent Condon, and this is the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast. for making lockdown Hawkeyes, your first listen every day, your daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast.
Starting point is 00:00:41 Today, we're going to take a look at the newest inductees into the Hawkeye Hall of Fame, some honors being out there, including a great football player that was overdue when Cedric Shaw making his way into the Hawkeye Athletic Hall of Fame, plus the other nominations and inductees that'll be coming up this fall. We'll also be joined a little bit later on by John Bowen Camp. He'll stop by and we'll talk with John a little bit, some Iowa basketball, including the news from the Iowa women. as they have got the game in Sioux City.
Starting point is 00:01:09 They'll face off against Vanderbilt, a huge matchup coming up a little bit later on this season. John will talk about that, what he expects to see in the offseason from Iowa men's basketball. And plus, we'll talk a little football with him. And any change going back to the spring of where he is today when we look at who's going to be the starter at the quarterback position. Definitely one of those questions that lingers out there for a lot of Hawkeye fans. But we begin today with some football talk and taking a look at offseason games. So this is the summertime, and we've got the freshmen that are reporting to duty. They're making the way to campus, and we will certainly talk plenty about those incoming freshmen.
Starting point is 00:01:44 And if any of them have a chance to make an impact, also remember, a lot of these guys have already been on campus. They started their football careers back in January with the new semester, got a jump start on things. But we'll talk a little bit about the guys still reporting in and take a look later on here in the coming weeks about those incoming freshmen and opportunities that are out there for them. Today I want to talk, though, about the players that are going to be impact players, I believe, for this season. And guys that really need to make another jump here coming out of spring football, the offseason strength and conditioning that they're going through. And just how important this time is going to be for these guys before we get into August camp, get things started with Iowa football because it is an incredibly important time. So I'm going to go through here about a list of a dozen guys I think need to have big summers for Iowa football leading into the season. and starting with the composition that we have talked about a ton,
Starting point is 00:02:34 and that is obviously defensive tackle. The question marks are huge. They're incredibly concerning for me. And if you're an everyday listener, you definitely know that I have hit that point. That is my biggest concern. We're the quarterback, regardless of it's Hank Brown or Jeremy Hanklinsky. Anything else that is out there.
Starting point is 00:02:51 It comes down to the defensive tackle position. Out on the outside of defensive end, I really think they're going to be fine. I really believe that out there they're going to be okay. Yosea Pinesse, Mary Wethers back. Those are a couple of guys that have at minimum
Starting point is 00:03:04 some experience, what they did in the transfer portal. I got like Camari Brown I think is going to help them out. And there's other pieces out there that at minimum, I think they're going to be okay at defensive end.
Starting point is 00:03:14 Defensive tackle, though, it is the great unknown. Now, Bryce Hawthorne's back. I think he at least has a resume that you're comfortable with and we health needs to go hand in hand with him. But here's the other guys. Starting with the former walk-ons
Starting point is 00:03:26 with both Will Hubert and Luke Gaffney. I think both of those guys are going to play this year. They're not huge by any means. And, you know, physically at this point in your career, is it likely that a guy is going to be able to suddenly going into their final season, put on an extra 10 pounds of weight? Probably not, but just even incremental gains from both of those guys,
Starting point is 00:03:45 I think is going to be important. Bryce Stevenson, who comes in from Holy Cross out of the portal, a guy that felt like maybe took a little bit longer than you'd hope to acclimate moving up, coming from the FCS ranks up to high division one football and playing in the Big Ten. Stevenson's a guy, I think that they are going to need this year and probably get a need to play 20, 30, maybe 40 snaps a game at defensive tackle. His growth is going to be big. And there's one other.
Starting point is 00:04:10 And it's one of the young defensive tackles. And it's not very often that we do see young defensive tackles play in the Iowa system, the amount of learning that it takes. It's not just about going after the quarterback, doing whatever you want and trying to make a play. You have to play fundamentally sound. But I've heard so many good things about Brad Fitzgibid. And Fitzgiven is a guy that is not listed big. I have heard he is bigger that is listed 265 that is up there at Hawkeye Sports. Still, another summer, another strength and conditioning program, him adding the weight,
Starting point is 00:04:42 getting up there. And even if it's up to 280 pounds, can he play at that and be able to provide them some kind of impact early in his career? That's a guy that I'm really excited about when you're talking about upside at the defensive tackle position. I think Brad Fitzgibbon is a guy. You definitely have to look at there. other guys, other areas that we need to see growth. Well, this isn't even really a growth thing, but when you're talking about strength and conditioning for me,
Starting point is 00:05:05 this is about health. And it's Michael Mislinsky. And I don't know with Ms. Linsky, who is going into, now a six year of eligibility, he was granted an extra year by the NCAA, as we talked about a couple of weeks ago here, lockdown Hawkeyes. When you look at Ms. Linsky,
Starting point is 00:05:20 I don't know if it's putting them in bubble wrap for the full summer or if it's the other way and getting that body ready to go, because he is going to hopefully play the most amount of football he has ever played in his Hawkeye career. Getting that health out there, getting his body ready to play what is going to be anticipated. He is, for me, the likely starter at the right guard position. The left side, you feel very good with Lauk out there, obviously at the left tackle position. What we saw from Layton Jones a year ago, you got people in the middle and Dotsler out at the right side on right tackle. And Mitzky is the guy having that body ready to go through the rigors of a 24.
Starting point is 00:05:56 12 games schedule. How about the running back position? And Kamari Moulton had a very nice season a year ago, but it wasn't the breakout season. I think a lot of people, myself included, thought we were going to see out of him last year. He was good. He was solid. And you know he was going to be dependable between 70 and 99 yards every single game. That's what you got out of Kamari Moulton. But taking it now up a level, adding that extra gear. And how many of those gains? And he burst through the line and he made a move and he picked up nine. Boy, that could have been 29. Seeing that, that extra gear from Kamari Molton, I think is going to be important. Remember, he also played with an injury a year ago.
Starting point is 00:06:31 Health, a part of it. Speaking of health at the running back position, Brevin Doll. And though I don't anticipate Brevin is going to be part of the rotation, getting carries when you look at the top flight backs that Iowa has back and Nathan Neal and what we saw out of Xavier Williams a year ago, and they're deep, obviously, at that position. But for him, I think he can help them out on special teams and as a returner. And when you're trying to replace Caden Weechin,
Starting point is 00:06:54 He is a guy, certainly in the kicker turn of game, I think can be an impact player. It's been another guy talking about health like we did with Ms. Linsky. Same thing for with Brevindal and getting him back to 100%. A couple other guys, let's go to the defensive back position, looking for gains here during the summer, and improving in the strength and conditioning program. Jacob Wallace, I think Jacob Wallace is going to play a bunch. You can tell listening to Phil Parker, he really likes the redshirt freshman out of the Northeast. He played last year as a freshman, still maintain.
Starting point is 00:07:24 his red shirt status, but he's going to be a piece. He's got some versatility. He can play corner. They like him a little bit of cash also with that, just adding a little bit of size to that frame for Jacob Wallace. And then Tyler Brown comes in from James Madison. Now he looks the part. It's not that he has to get noticeably stronger or anything like that.
Starting point is 00:07:42 It's just going through the expectations for Iowa. That's a guy I think is going to be a start of this year in Tyler Brown. Another one, a summer of development for him. And finally, Marcelo Vitti, who came in during the spring, came in early, graduated early from high school. He's going to be a part of special teams. Just more time for him. He is one of the true freshmen I point to.
Starting point is 00:08:02 We're going to see out there on the field this year with Diddy, maybe even in a defensive role as he played a bunch in the open practice. How about wide receiver? Reese Vander Zee. Now, he looks the part, but health has been a big part of it for him. Two different foot injuries that he has sustained during his first two years on campus. We know what a playmaker that he is. We know how important Reese Vander Z is going to be for this passing game this year,
Starting point is 00:08:27 but that's going to be big. And then I also think you throw into the mix the two incoming guys from the FCS ranks. Obviously Tony Diaz, but he got banged up towards the end of camp and Evan James. Both of those guys need to get bigger, stronger, and be ready to go for 12 games in the Big Ten coming up this season. I think a big, big offseason for both of those guys. And then finally, of course, you go back to quarterback. And I don't think there's anything physically that is going to matter one way or the
Starting point is 00:08:52 other for Hank Brown or for Jeremy Hecklinski, but being in there, being part of it, being part of the group and obviously continuing to grow as a leader. That is a huge thing for both of those guys. So there it is, guys that need to make some gains here in the off season as we get ready for Iowa football. We're going to talk more Iowa football and a lot of Iowa basketball next. John Bowencamp is going to join us. He is the writer for the Associated Press.
Starting point is 00:09:16 Take a look at a lot of things going on in the world of Hawkeye Athletics. John Bowencamp up next. Stay right there. Starting point is 00:09:43 Turn five bucks into $150 in bonus bets just for getting started. I love using Fanduel during the playoffs. Everything I need is right there. I love the wild swings that you saw in the first half for a while. wild looked like in game one of the finals that there was no shot that the spurs were going to lose at home. And then the comeback started something great there and you can get everything you need right there on Fandle. Check stats, trends, matchups. Before you make your picks, it makes a whole experience making you more informed. Whether you're looking at player props or just your favorite

Head to fanduel.com for you to get started to do today. That's Fandual.com. FanDuel, play your game.
Starting point is 00:10:48 John Bowencamp joining us here as we take a look at the Hawks. John, what to start with the news from today. and Jan Jensen, she is not shy about the way she's putting together a schedule this year. We talked about last week, the home-and-home matchup that will start in Connecticut this year with the Yukon Huskies. And now another big one, an SEC power in Vanderbilt. You're going to play that game up in Sioux Falls, likely at minimum, a top 15 team that'll be match it up there. Jan, this is going to be a tough schedule this season. Yeah, it is.
Starting point is 00:11:18 And I mean, I like the way, and it shows the respect, I think, that people now have. for this program. And if, you know, if Yukon, you know, Yukon called, reached out to them for the home and all, you know, that's saying to me that they wanted to play, to play this game on a neutral court, you know, against an SEC team, you know, a really good SEC team, again, shows the respect that they have. And obviously, it'll probably be a nice TV game, you know, so again, you've got that there. It's a really great opportunity for them.
Starting point is 00:11:50 And I think it's, you know, I know, I saw on social media. media and fans mad that, you know, this game wasn't going to be played at Carver. But you know what? It's still going to be playing in the state of Iowa. If you want to go to the game, go to the game. And I think it's a great opportunity for everybody to see this team play and against a really, really good competition. So I thought it was really cool when I saw the announcement.
Starting point is 00:12:12 And like I said, you throw in the Yukon announcement and, you know, in fact, they're going to be coming to Carver next season. I think I think it's awesome for this program to now have that kind of respect to be in there among the national teams. you know, in that kind of respect. You have the matchup coming to Sioux City. That'll be a big thing, certainly in the state at Fleet Farm Arena, a Tyson Events Center there in Sioux City. Love that opportunity also and a little bit bigger than the Pentagon is. So that's a big thing for Northwest Iowa.
Starting point is 00:12:41 We've seen many of these games, both men's and women's that have been played, obviously, in Sioux Falls. But for Sioux City, that's a big deal. We got an affiliate up there in Sioux City. So congratulations to them up there. Keeping it inside the state borders, too. That's got to make some people happy. Yeah, I think because, I mean, people sometimes kind of grumble about when they play in two balls.
Starting point is 00:12:59 And, you know, it's not Iowa. It's still close to Iowa. But it's, you know, still close to northwest Iowa. But at the same time, you're right, it is a chance to put this in another Iowa City, you know, and a chance for people to see them that might not get to carve. And, you know, and especially the way that, you know, games have been sold out lately. So I think it's great opportunity for the program. I think it's a great opportunity for Sioux City.
Starting point is 00:13:22 I think it's just going to be it's going to be. It's going to be a great game for them to play, I think. Look at this Iowa women's basketball team, the headline item of the offseason, Danny Carnegie coming in, an all-SCC player from a year ago, and a different type of player, looking at the highlights from her from a year ago, watching her at Georgia. This is a kind of player that Iowa hasn't had that can go off the bounce. Certainly didn't have it last season. Somebody, chit-chat's quick, but she's also 5'4,
Starting point is 00:13:49 having somebody with not just the speed to go off the bounce, but also have the size to get in there and do some damage. Coupled with, she's a good three-point shooter as well. Different kind of it looks like, and it sounds like, according to Jan, we're going to go back to maybe the more traditional offense that we're used to, as opposed to the two posts they used a year ago. Yeah, no, I mean, it was important to them to get size and experience in the portal, and I think they did that.
Starting point is 00:14:14 You know, and I mean, I have seen some people grumbling that they've only got 11 players on the roster, but you know what? There's a lot of teams right now, I think, in college basketball, men and women that aren't going to use their full complement of scholarships just because they know they'll bring somebody in that they don't play, they're going to leave. And it's like, but what she was able to do in the portal with the players she was able to get, and I mean, she's bringing back clearly in Ava Hayden, one of the best players of the country. Taylor Stremel is going to have a really good season.
Starting point is 00:14:41 I think Chit Chat, you know, showed what she could do last year. I think this is a pretty good team. There's still some question marks with them, but I think she did really good job in the portal with getting the players that she's going to need to compete in this Big Ten because this league is going to be really good this year. And you're going to see a lot of teams that were, like, you know, fairly good last year that are going to be even better this year. And so I do think there's going to be a lot of talent in this league.
Starting point is 00:15:06 And I think she was able to match that with what she was able to get them for them. John Bowen Camp, joining us as we take a look at the Hawkeyes. Over on the men's side, it feels like the news has started to slow down a little bit. I know Ben's still trying to figure out that non-com. schedule and get that finished up and that's kind of the off season. But as they get ready for their summer workouts and the like,
Starting point is 00:15:26 we've heard some good buzz already about Trevin Urock and the step forward that he has taken, Trey Thompson coming off the red shirt year. What do you look at kind of that next group coming in, along with the freshman, Jaden Coon, and we saw at the state basketball tournament, just how good he was. What do you look at the guys that we don't know at this point or don't have a real good feeling with who do you got your gold star on? Who are you looking at you think is going to take a big step forward? of the guys coming back the guys I think they're going to break take a real and you mentioned him with
Starting point is 00:15:53 Trevor Dirok I think he's going to be really good you know and you could kind of see flashes of him last year but you know people talked about you know that they only added a couple of guys in the portal which they didn't have that much room on the roster to begin with but in my mind they're just going to be better because of guys that are going to take a step from year one year two you know And it's funny to say that about Cooper Cotch because he's been there two years. But last year was his first really full season. I think he takes a big step, you know, next year. I think Kate Sage takes that big step next year.
Starting point is 00:16:27 You know, Cam Manio now has some help inside. And so, you know, yeah, you're not going to have a benefit starts. But you're going to have a really good team. It's just a matter of how do you put the pieces together with this group. But I do think this is a really strong team. That's really, really good team from one to 13. And I think they will be, I think, he's going to have a lot of decisions to make on who's going to play
Starting point is 00:16:51 because he's going to have a lot of talent out there, I think. It's kind of crazy. There is a wide range of opinions about this Iowa basketball team on the national scale. I've seen, I was mentioned earlier, Bart Torvik, who has his analytics up for next season, though they're not completely finished as more guys still available in the portal and the like. He has Iowa at 41. And then the other side, C.J. Moore with the athletic.
Starting point is 00:17:12 He's got Iowa preseason number 14, so pretty wide swat there. Now, the easy answer is it's going to be somewhere in the middle. But if he had to take a guess closer to 41 or closer to 14 coming up this year. Closer to 14. I mean, I think there'll be a top 25 team. You know, I'm going to try to lobby with Blue Rib and Yearbook to make them the top 25 teams. That makes me a little more money. But I do think it's team you've got to consider just because of the depth and the experience that you've got to be.
Starting point is 00:17:42 So I think this will be a much better team. And I do think that this will be a, if not top 25, I think it's going to be the first one out of that group. You know, it's 26, 27, somewhere in there. So I do think that this is going to be a really good team that maybe somebody doesn't respect getting it here, that they're going to be respecting them, I think, by the time they get in January. Finally, little Iowa football with John Bowen Camp.
Starting point is 00:18:06 And John, as we make our way way through the offseason, storylines start to percolate. And now I go back to really the same big question. It is this squad with just the lack of seniors. It is so on Iowa-like to go into a year with only 10 scholarship seniors. Kirk talks about leadership. I don't know. Maybe I'm making a bigger deal out of this than I should.
Starting point is 00:18:29 But it's so Iowa-on-Iwa football-like that we see just this lack of seniors on this squad. I don't know. It's just something that's been lingering in my mind for a lot going back to spring football. Right, but I mean, I think there are a lot of guys there that just have the experience in the program that know what Kirk wants, that knows how this program wants to go. It may be a little bit of an issue, but I don't think it's going to be that much for an issue because I do think this is a really talented football team. And you can look at it another way this is the team might be together for a couple years. So, you know, this might be a good year. Next year might be even better.
Starting point is 00:19:05 So, you know, there's a couple different ways to look at it. But I do think this is a really good football. team that is going to win a lot of games and may surprise somebody, maybe get in the playoffs, who knows. But I do think he's got a lot of talent there. It's just a matter of, you know, how those guys kind of developed in that first month. Now, I've heard a wide range from the beat guys about Tony Diaz and, you know, what you guys have kind of been hearing behind the scenes. I had one report that blew me away and it was not somebody that's normally kind of feeds me info that is not usually pretty close.
Starting point is 00:19:41 And this one was just about the excitement level inside the building that there is. Are you somebody, though, that wants to still wait and see? Yeah, the hype's out there. We know about the hype, but we've seen hype before. Are you jumping at head first? You're saying, absolutely, I'm going to buy this one, hook, line, and sinker. And Tony Diaz is going to be a stud at wide receiver. I'm kind of sort of buying it, but I'm also like Hughie versus before.
Starting point is 00:20:03 Yeah. And then somebody gets, then somebody injures a hamstring in August. You know, and then never is a, you know, so, so I mean, it's like I want to see him in game situations before I really totally buy into it. But everything I've heard is the same thing you did that this is a really, he's a really good receiver and really knows what he's doing and can get the ball and you go get it. And so if he is what is advertised, it's something they really haven't had, you know, when you think about it. And so I think, and again, he's got the game experience. He's produced at a different level. so we'll see what he can do.
Starting point is 00:20:38 But I'm kind of high on it, I think, but not totally sold just yet. That's, I think, the safe place to be. Finally, quarterback, Hank Brown, Jeremy Hecklinsky. I think it's going to come down to the wire. We're now, what, over a month removed from spring football. So as we go in and we get ready for Big Ten Football Media Day is coming up. And, of course, after that, we'll get ready for Iowa Media Day and all the pomp and circumstance leading into that first game of the year
Starting point is 00:21:04 against Northern Illinois. John, do you have a favorite? If you had to put a line out there, if you were forced to make a pick, who takes snap number one as they trot out against the Huskies? You know, I would have said Hecklinsky in April, but maybe I say Hank Brown. The bottom line is it's going to come down to who in August
Starting point is 00:21:25 shows Kirk that they can manage a game. Bottom line, that's it. I mean, both of them are different style of quarterback. Both of them are really good at what they do. It's just a matter of who's not going to make mistakes, who can lead the team. And I think that's what he's going to be looking for in August. And in the end, that's what's going to make that decision. Check it in from the ballpark.
Starting point is 00:21:45 He is John Bowencamp joining us here today. John, as always, appreciate the time. Get back to the ballgame. We'll talk to you again soon. All right. Have a good one. See you later. Thank you, John Bowen Camp with us here.

So there are new inductees, the 2006 Hall of Fame class for the Iowa Letter Winners Club and the Athletic Department that came in the 37th Hall of Fame class, including Kim Baker L. Abide. from women's gymnastic. Klaus Bergstrom from men's tennis. Dan DeMarco Simmons from field hockey.
Starting point is 00:23:15 Amy Harrog, Tanny from women's basketball. There's a name certainly remember. Matt McDonough, there's another one. Janet Moyler-Ritter from volleyball. And finally, Cedric Shaw from the Iowa football program. What to talk about a couple of these former players, former Hawkeyes, what they're able to do. Amy Herring was an absolute stud right at the turn of the 90s into the 2000s.
Starting point is 00:23:35 She was a big, big piece of some really good Iowa women's basketball. teams. Matt McDonough, obviously a ton of success that he had on the wrestling mat and a local guy making good at the University of Iowa. But I want to talk about Cedric Shaw. And he was just one of my all-time favorite guys seeing Cedric Shaw out there, went on, had a brief NFL career, but a guy that just ran so hard. And those are the memories that I have from him being thrust in the lineup at different times, what he was able to do during his Hawkeye career, just an absolute stunt. A guy that played at a high level, ran for a school record 4,156 yards tied with Tavian Banks with the most career rushing touchdowns with 33.
Starting point is 00:24:17 A guy that was kind of a little bit of surprise, he wasn't in there even earlier in here, his career, what he was able to do. Part of also that Texas connection that Hayden Fry was able to mind so well throughout the years and what he was able to do, an all-time favorite. Number five, Cedric Shaw, and congratulations to him for making the Hawkeye Athletics Hall of Fame. overdue well worth it and hopefully worth the weight and hopefully some smiles that will come out of of that one. Well, we are out of time for today. We'll be back with you tomorrow. Tom Kaker from Hawkeye Report is going to join us. We're going to talk some Iowa football recruiting. It is that time of
Starting point is 00:24:52 year now in the month of June. That means it is time to take a look at the recruiting. We've mentioned before this is likely going to be a pretty small recruiting class. Iowa already does have 10 commitments for this class. So what does this time mean? How choosy, how picky is Iowa going to be? Iowa had a big time wide receiver, a top 100 kid nationally, regardless of position that was on campus earlier this week. And some pretty good returns on that one. Could the worm be turning for Hawkeye wide receiver recruiting? It feels that way with what they were able to do, getting Tony Diaz away from Alabama. That's where he was targeted to visit next coming out of the portal.
Starting point is 00:25:30 And he canceled that one to stay at Iowa. Could be some more news coming. We'll talk about that more coming up tomorrow with Tom Kaker from hawkeye report.com. Thanks for being with us, your daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast, Lockdown Hawkeyes. We'll talk to you tomorrow. Until then, go Hawks.
