Starting point is 00:00:00 The transfer portal is open, and big news out of Iowa City, punter Reese Dakin hits the portal and suddenly special teams are back under the microscope. For a team that wins in the margins, a real concern for the Hawkeyes. You are Locked-on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. You can hear me currently on the Iowa Sports Radio Network each weekday from noon to two, talk of the world of sports with you and lots of Hawkeyes. We have stations in Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, the Quad Cities, Sioux City, and our flagship, 106.3, KX. and no. Today's episode of Lockdown Hawkeyes is brought to you by Game Time. Download the game time app, create the count and use cold lockdown college for $20 off your first purchase. Today, we are going to take a look back at the women's win against Nebraska, a dominating
Starting point is 00:01:15 performance late in that one as Iowa pulls away what was a tight game throughout as Iowa gets to the victory and continues their undefeated streak in the Big Ten and some of the big, big plays that came out of that one. We'll also preview the matchup with UCLA on the Ben's side. Tomorrow, a big match up there as the Hawkeyes and Bruins will get together at Carver at an important game for Iowa as they reemerge here in Big Ten play. We'll also be joined by Tom Kaker from hawkeyeir report.com. We'll get Tom's perspective back from Florida and the bowl game in Tampa, what he saw on the ReliQuest Bowl. And more importantly with what he does over there with on three and rivals, what's happening in the transfer portal. That's where we begin
Starting point is 00:01:55 today's program in the portal and what is happening, a couple of departures that have been announced here as we sit on the opening day of the portal window. January 2nd, this will run for the next two weeks. And remember, this is the only portal window that is available for players to enter into. As we go into this new era of college athletics, the transfer portal as it continues to change and morph. And we're trying to figure out exactly what this is going to look like. This is also a big change.
Starting point is 00:02:24 And personally, I hate it from both the Iowa perspective, but also from the players' perspective, know in the past obviously you have the opportunity go through spring practice kind of see where you are right in terms of your program for these guys see that there's going to be an opportunity for them is there going to be playing time am i going to be a starter whatever it may be heck for a lot of these guys even will there be a special team's role for me well now without that window after spring practice for these football players they're not going to have that opportunity they have to take the guesswork out of it and just go in now now i do wonder also if that's going to lead to some some more flexibility, at least in some programs of guys making the decision to come back. We'll see how that plays out. Iowa already has some transfer targets that have been targeted and are going to be setting up business. We're going to talk about those guys here momentarily. But the news of Reese Taken, the Iowa punter that will depart with two years of eligibility.
Starting point is 00:03:19 The Aussie that came over, they had him in the fold. He was going to be the heir apparent for Tori Taylor. After Tori Taylor put together an all-American career at the University of Iowa now. the Chicago Bears punter and Tori Taylor was almost once in a lifetime or maybe once in a generation. Look, we saw it with Reggie Roby way back in the early 80s, right? And we come into this to one with Tori Taylor. You know, one thing that I always wanted people to remember about Tori Taylor is he came over
Starting point is 00:03:47 as an adult, not an 18-year-old adult, no, as a guy in his 20s that was older, more experience coupled with what he got to go through in his first year at the college football level, that was 2020, didn't have to worry about crowds. There were not 80,000 people in the stands hollering at him, like punters, have to deal with. Reese Dakin came into an incredibly difficult situation. He walked in not only having to replace a once-in-a-generation talent in Tori Taylor, but also had to do it as a younger guy. He's departing, and the likelihood is that he's going to end up at Michigan State.
Starting point is 00:04:22 This is something that we alluded to, the possibility of this happened here a week ago on Lockdown Hawkeyes, that the rumbling certainly had been out there. With LeVar Woods departure to Michigan State, a guy that is Australian, doesn't have obviously family connections here in the state. Though I believe his mom is American, and because of that, he also has American citizenship, and the likelihood is that he also, with that,
Starting point is 00:04:46 is able to partake in the NIL different than international students on visas. I know, we're getting deep into the weeds. That aside, look, he's going to Michigan State. I would be fall out of my chair shocked. if he doesn't end up with LeVar Woods at Michigan State. Sure, they'll put together a nice package. And, well, hopefully for him, he can put a little bit more at Michigan State than he would next season at Iowa.
Starting point is 00:05:08 I think all of it be happy, right? All right, Dakey, you can go out there. But here's the thing most importantly. As Iowa now, special teams-wise, I don't want to say panic button, but concerned, absolutely. So Iowa, let's start at the top. They lose their special teams coordinator, a guy that has put together year after year,
Starting point is 00:05:30 one of the special, most special teams unit in college football. Year after year after year, you know they're going to be good. You know they're going to be solid. And now Lavar Woods is leaving to help out at Michigan State. Number one. Number two, well, we knew this was going to happen. Drew Stevens departed. And though there were times that Drew Stevens had his issues.
Starting point is 00:05:53 This season, the miss kick against Indiana, A couple other ones left you, scratch your head. Two years ago, we talked about the game winner against Nebraska. He didn't even get the opportunity to do that. Marshall Meeter had to come in and knock that one in. We have seen highs and lows for Drew Stevens. What we do know for sure, dude's super talented. And the dude in terms of what he was as a kicker, outstanding for Iowa.
Starting point is 00:06:16 Oh, on top of it, you're losing your two-time Jet Award winner for the punt return, the kick returner, the returner of the year. I'll get to it in college football and Caden Weechin. He moves on. Oh, by the way, remember, they brought in a long snapper from Boston College this year. Worrell, he was a long snapper this season. He departs. Your long snapper, gone.
Starting point is 00:06:40 You're a turner, gone. Kicker, gone. Putter, gone. The guy that puts it all together, gone. Yeah, I am hitting the panic button. This for Iowa is concerning. And on top of that, the way that I'm. Iowa plays. We've gone back and forth and we've whined and complained about everything with the
Starting point is 00:07:01 Iowa offense throughout the years. And though obviously we have seen steps forward these last couple of seasons, the improvement has been both tangible and things we can also just see, right? There has been growth out of the offense. However, the way that Iowa wins these games and why Iowa is one of the most winningest programs in the Big Ten over last five, here, so over the last decade, over last 20, the reason that Iowa's up there in those numbers is because the defense is elite and the
Starting point is 00:07:33 special teams are elite. And when you can be elite in two different categories, that's going to set you apart. And that's going to win so many of those games that are so incredibly close. I found this number. I think this says a lot, certainly, about Iowa and where they have been.
Starting point is 00:07:49 Special teams EPA over the last decade, Iowa outpaces the second place program in the country, San Diego State. The numbers, and this comes from expected points added, from true media. Expected points added over the decade is 32, 32, 32.36. Basically, meaning per season, Iowa gets about 30 points per year just out of their special teams compared to average.
Starting point is 00:08:18 And the gap between them and second place, San Diego State is significant. And you look at them and let's go to the next power. conference team. The next big 10 team, Michigan. Fourth on this list overall, over the last decade special teams, their number 193. Again, Iowa 326. Not a crisis, but it is a concern. Who's going to be the special teams coordinator? What specialists are they going to get? That is going to be, I'm sure, not talked about a ton. However, incredibly important for Iowa football. Mention Reese Dakin has entered the transfer portal. Also a couple of other names. out there, Kail Kalerik, who a lot of people thought maybe was going to be starting safety for
Starting point is 00:09:00 Iowa next year, depending on what they did at the cash position with going entering or coming back, what was going to be the possibility of finding what that was going to look like next season. And of course, what you have was Zach Lutmer. Maybe the third guy was going to be Calaric. Well, he is in the portal, so that will not be the case. Do wonder if there was some young guys, maybe that had passed him up, or if they're also looking in the portal and they feel like they're in good shape. Three names for you here. Out of Friday. And there's going to be a ton more coming in the transfer portal. Iowa has visits set up with all three of these guys.
Starting point is 00:09:31 Anthony Hawkins, a defensive back out of Villanova. Camari Brown, a defensive end from Elon 12 sacks this year. We talk about getting pressure off the edge. That's a guy definitely at the top of my list. And any wide receiver is as well. Tony Diaz out of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Okay, we'll see. We come back here.
Starting point is 00:09:50 We'll talk to a guy that knows the recruiting industry. He has Tom Kaker from Hawkeye Report.com. perspective what's happening in the transfer portal and look back at iwas win against vanderbilt plus we preview iowa ucla on the hardwood in men's basketball coming up tomorrow with tom kaker that's next i'm locked on hawkeyes friday's always feel different during basketball season and fanduel is making them even better every friday night before the games tip off fanduel gives fans a new way to kick off the weekend with mb a happy hour mbba happy hour is your official pre game, a limited time window where special offers drop right inside the Fandual app before the
Starting point is 00:10:30 action starts. It's easy to check the weekly special before tip off and make a move before the window closes. The timing is perfect right before the games, right before the weekend starts. They got you covered, not just with the NBA. Obviously, final week of the NFL, they got you covered there. College hoops. We mentioned that Iowa UCLA game. I was going to be favoring that matchup against the Bruins. They got you covered there on the Fandual app. So before tip off, check the Vandual app and see what's dropping during MBA happy hour every Friday from five until 6.30 central time. That's 6 to 7.30 Eastern. A little basketball, a little action, and a whole lot of Friday energy. That's MBA happy hour only on Fandual, the official sportsbook partner
Starting point is 00:11:12 of the NBA. Let's get Tom Cakard in here. Hawkeye Report.com. He was in Tampa back monitoring all the comings, maybe some goings. We shall see what happens. Tom, Trent and Ken, how are you? Happy New Year. Yeah, happy New Year, guys. Yeah, we're back home, you know, back in God's country. So, yeah, and the portal's open, and there's already over 2,000, probably about 2,500, I would guess, by now, in the portal already. Will there be a place, Tom, and we can find out how many guys are left without a home when it's all said and done? I mean, do they actually, will they follow these 2,500?
Starting point is 00:11:57 I mean, is there 400, 500 that aren't going to have a spot when it's done? I have no idea what the number would be, but I'd love to know whatever that number is. Yeah, I'm sure somebody will compile it later that there's like all these different players of don't have a home. Or they, I'm always curious, too, how many of them end up having to slide down a level, too. You know, that just they over, overestimate their worth. And they. And that's agents a lot of time. Haven, yep, having to go down to, you know, D2 or whatever and finish up their college career.
Starting point is 00:12:35 And there are some guys that are at the Power 5 level that, you know, maybe they go down a level because they just want to play. Sure. You know, they just want to play. So we'll see what happens. big news for Iowa Reese Dakin has entered the portal going to end up in Michigan State most likely with him
Starting point is 00:12:53 so you need a new kicker you need a new punter you need a new long snapper you need a new special teams coach Iowa always closes the gap with their special teams over this last decade this is pretty concerning this might be one of the more concerning
Starting point is 00:13:06 offseason topics that we have Tom it really is it's interesting that Kirk hasn't made any announcement What I've gathered from talking to a few people is that they're going to promote from within. So maybe there's already something kind of wink wink, nudge, nudge, all done internally, but they just haven't announced it yet. But you've got to go out now and find a kicker and a punter and probably a long snapper.
Starting point is 00:13:40 You've got a lot to find here in the next few weeks. And it's important to Iowa. I do think I've heard the North Dakota State kicker that they've kind of on the down low kind of maybe gotten something done with him already off the, you know, off the books kind of thing with the agent. So we'll see if that materializes. Maybe he visits this weekend. And we find out more about that. But now you've got to go. Are they going to go back down to Australia?
Starting point is 00:14:16 and try and find a punter. Are they going to find somebody internally? How about the kid that, was it the kid at Mount Pleasant, the Miller kid who was the number one punter in the country, and he hasn't really punted for Georgia. So will they go after him maybe? I don't know. We'll see.
Starting point is 00:14:32 Fascinating stuff. Do you want to move on to move back to the ReliQuest? Surrent and I spent some time talking about it. It was such a fascinating game. And one of the plays we never talked about, and I'm sure we would have got to it, the Grinowski fumble recovery was as, how did he get that ball? I mean, you can see his arm trying to wrestle away, but, man, I thought that that thing was as good as gone.
Starting point is 00:14:54 And I know all the Vandy players are jumping around that they had the football. And I legitimately thought that the players on the field were actually right this time, right, that they did have the football. Yet somehow, I was quarterback, comes up with the football, remarkable play. I don't know which Houdini act was better, that 44-yard, run on the first drive where I thought they had him dead to right he was or or that fumble recovery that fumble recovery is just it's incredible when you look at it because he just kind of puts his paw underneath there and there's just enough room for him to get that ball in there and
Starting point is 00:15:31 pull it back to himself and uh because you know that's a big dude that was on top 22 yeah he was yeah it's a big dude and and they just somehow he ended up with that full football. And that was a huge playing the game, too. So, you know, prevented a turnover from happening. And, um, yeah, they, I thought, um, that was a fitting end, though, for, for Iowa season. I'm, it's, for Kirk, I'm kind of glad he doesn't have to answer the, hey, you haven't beat a ranked team. And since, you know, now that, by the way, I saw the Nebraska one, they haven't been an AP top 25 team since 2016. Just a little bit. 30 straight. Yeah, that's a different world. Different world that they're living in. We saw Kabari Moulton, really, really good performance out of him.
Starting point is 00:16:25 Can't get to that triple digits, though. Couldn't get to 100. He finishes with 95 yards in the game. Moulton next season. He had the shoulder injury early this season, came back maybe a little earlier than anticipated in that game against Ruckers. He could tell he wasn't 100%. Is there another gear to him?
Starting point is 00:16:41 Is there another level that Kabari Moulton can unload? luck i think so um he just doesn't he hasn't shown yet that ability to make that last guy miss and getting that open field for the caleb johnson's the world have that have that just that ability to make that last guy at the last line of defense miss and then you're off for 35 40 yards he did bust the 30 what 32 yarder late in the game uh or later in the game busted that nice run. So that was that was good. But yeah, he, gosh, I think I think it was four times this year.
Starting point is 00:17:21 He got over 90 yards rushing in the game. And one of them he got 99. You know, he just could not get, get over the hump. I thought he was going to, I thought he was a lot to get 100 at one point in the game because he had over 90 at one point. And there was a pretty decent amount of time left. but they decided to run Xavier Williams on that last bit. And he ended up getting some yards instead of Moulton.
Starting point is 00:17:57 Venami was unbelievable in the football game. It looks like I solved their tight end problem and have for the next couple of years. But it's Reese Vander Z to me, as good as Van Ami was, and he was really good. Vander Z, that catch that he may, I mean, he's done this a lot, essentially. going back over his two years. He hasn't been able to see the field a lot. But I'd like to buy stock. It's too late to buy Venami stock.
Starting point is 00:18:20 That ship has sailed. But Van der Zee might be able to still buy low in some markets. It looks as though his future is going to be very bright going into what will be his junior season. Yeah, I was, by the way, noticing during the game, I peeked on the Twitter and saw a couple of NFL scout guys, the draft guys that I follow. They're like, oh, yeah, I was got another great tight end. look at that and he had a breakout game but yeah Reese just can make those plays in space and around the goal line and just go up and kind of moss people
Starting point is 00:18:53 and just go up and climb up and get the ball and had great hands around that area so he just got to stay healthy if he can have a fully healthy season it's going to be really interesting to see what he can do moving forward Speaking of moving forward, let's go forward to the quarterback position. You've told us and the coaches have told us from Kirk to Tim Lester that they are happy with what they have in the quarterback room, replacing Mark Krodowski with either Jeremy
Starting point is 00:19:22 Hecklinsky or with Hank Brown. A, you have a little bit more intel in the recruiting world. Are they sniffing around it all? And Hecklinsky is the gap pretty significant right now. They're going to say it's close, I know at least out there, but is the gap between Heklinski and Brown significant? or pretty tight? No, I even talked to
Starting point is 00:19:42 kind of to him just privately, and he always says it's really close. It's not that there's not a huge gap there's a gap, but there's not a huge gap. So the thing they're intrigued by Hecklinsky is that he's just, he's got that gunslinger mentality. He's going to be good and bad with it.
Starting point is 00:20:01 It's going to be like Drew Tate, we're in the same game he could throw two interceptions in the first quarter, but then he's going to come back. and throw three touchdown passes and win you the game late. So he moves a little bit better than you think he does. So he's just, you know, he's just a tough nut and they really like him. So I think the only way Iowa goes in and gets a quarterback is if they need another arm,
Starting point is 00:20:28 Tim likes to have five quarterbacks in his room. So if Ryan Fitzgerald, for example, would be the most likely guy to potentially enter the portal, go play for his dad at north at northwestern anymore but at michigan state then um then they might go out and get another guy who's kind of an arm uh that they can just bring in and and uh kind of be part of the team stratton ask type thing yeah yeah the jackson straton um kind of move and so we'll see if they do that i know they're you know they want want to see some development from Jimmy Sullivan, they've got the passenger kid coming in, but he's not coming in at semester.
Starting point is 00:21:13 They've got a ton of guys. That's the new trend, by the way, guys, in college football now is basically your entire recruiting class or three-fourths of it come in January now because of the numbers. So that's what's happening these days in college football. My last thing, Kyler Casper, back in the transfer portal, it does I would get him this time? Are you anything connecting docs between Kyler Casper and the Hawks? At this point, I have not heard anything or seen anything that indicates that I kind of wonder if Kyler Casper might be headed to Michigan State, where Kevin's good friend, LeVar Woods,
Starting point is 00:21:53 is now an assistant coach or associate head coach and special teams coordinator. Makes a whole lot of sense. We let you go on this, Tom, and it is a huge matchup for Iowa Hoops tomorrow, as they face off against UCLA. The Bruins come to town. I have with the chance to get another Big Ten win, get a win with, I'd anticipate a pretty good crowd on hand there at Carver Hawkeye Arena.
Starting point is 00:22:15 A great point card matchup, Donovan Dent on one side. Of course, Bennett starts on the other. What can he tell us about the Bruins? And I'm sure Mick Cronin, he'll be bitching about having to fly to Iowa City, right? Yeah. At least he won't have to look at the Statue of Liberty. Right, yes.
Starting point is 00:22:28 You know, after he said he had to see it three times in a month or whatever. yeah it's a that's a big game I think ticket sales are pretty good I asked my column this morning I'll press her with them and asked him about just how important it would be to have a good turnout because they really have not had what I would call a big turnout game and he's like he talked about when he was a kid
Starting point is 00:22:52 watching a pack Carver Hawkeye and he wants to see that and feel that and as the head coach so I'm hoping that they get close to it I think there's probably about 1,500 tickets maybe left So we'll see, but great matchup, you know, this is an important one for Iowa because this, you know, as the previous coach said, 18 monsters left on the schedule. They've got to get a couple wins, you know, got to go up to the Gulf next week, got Illinois coming to town next weekend. So the Big Ten is here and there's no easy, easy nights really this year in the conference. Tom Caker to hawkeye report.com joining us as always.
Starting point is 00:23:34 Thanks to Tom for his time. So we break things down. Iowa, UCLA 5 o'clock tip off for that one. We'll talk about that a little bit more. I want to start first of what we saw in the matchup against Nebraska. a slow start, a little bit disappointing at times the way they got, but I don't know if we're going to have enough superlatives to talk about chit-chat right and just how she important she is to this team. As the Hawkeyes get it done, 8672, chit-chat outstanding again, the way that she is
Starting point is 00:26:45 able to handle things. But I also love now what we're seeing with her playing with Stremlow together. Is Stremlow finishes his game with eight assists and her ability to make that extra. pass. What she can do on the defensive end of the floor. Knock down an open three-pointer. Stremlow, she's that Swiss Army knife. She can do so many different things for this squad. But maybe the story of this game was once again, Hannah Stolke and what she was able to do,
Starting point is 00:27:10 just how good she was on the floor, double, double. There's times we talk about her, right? Her as a rim runner, there's not many better in the country with her speed, with the size, her ability to get there. But you're seeing even more, I think, continuity with Hannah Stulke. with Ava Hayden. Same thing with Hayden. We're just going to run out after a while talking about her.
Starting point is 00:27:34 But there's one player that I think we really need to talk about. And that's Journey Houston. Coming into the year, it was all about Addy Deal. And Addy Deal was out there and got to play a little bit, and she's continued to get minutes in these big moments. Layla Hayes, who's come in and has been at minimum, very competent at the backup center position. And we know she's definitely got some upside at what she was able to do in this game.
Starting point is 00:27:57 But Jury Houston, on the defensive end of the floor, looks the part. She, though, is a tremendous rebounder. And she is going to be a piece that I think is going to grow as this season goes along. We'll see when Fierbach is able to come back, what Kylie Fierbach is going to be and what she's going to mean to this lineup. But Journey Houston, she continues to play herself into a role. And speaking to Stremlow, you do wonder whenever we do see the return and what comes back out of Kylie Fearbach if she's back in the starting lineup or you make the decision
Starting point is 00:28:34 to go with Stremloogis because she's so versatile she can do so many different things for this squad and then finally on the men's side we'll be back with you Saturday night and have a rapid reaction podcast because I just don't think I can overstate the importance of this matchup against UCLA for the Iowa men the UCLA team pretty good they'll likely be a tournament team you get them coming in to Carver on a Saturday. How many times have we complained? I want to see these Saturday games. You got one.
Starting point is 00:29:02 Good time. Five o'clock. You can get home in time to watch the 49ers and the Seahawks. If D.P. It's Saturday night football for the number one seed in the NFC. You can do all those things. It's not sold out yet. Hawkeye fans, let's get there.
Starting point is 00:29:17 Let's make it loud. Let's make it tough.
