survive and advance, but wow, that one got way too real.
Iowa Dodge's history escapes Fairley Dickinson and lives to see another round,
but they're going to have to play much better than what we saw in the first.
You are Locked on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day.
I'm Trent Condon.
Today's episode of Lockdown Hawkeyes is brought to you by Mazda.
We put the same drive into every detail.
Wins Defy the moment putting in the work that defines you.
Stay tuned for highlights in this week's moving the game forward.
There's more to a Mazda because there's more to you.
Well, we got a lot to get into here today as Iowa, the men's basketball team in the
round of 32 for the first time in five years.
They get a big one against number one, Florida, the top seed in their region and the defending
national champion.
We'll talk about the matchup and a blueprint for a Hawkeye upset.
Some successes out of the Iowa wrestling team over the weekend,
though Mikey Caliando falls in the championship match.
We'll talk about that.
And what we saw from the Hawkeye wrestlers and going into next year,
what things are going to look like for them.
But we begin with what we saw on the early evening,
Aber Carver Hawkeye Arena as Iowa gets past Fairley Dickinson.
Just an ugly, ugly basketball game, 58 to 48.
The Hawkeyes jumped out to an early lead.
It looked like this one was going to be easy.
cruise control, no problems at all.
And it looked that way for the first seven minutes of the basketball game and then proceeded
by having some of the worst basketball offensive stretches you're going to find from Iowa,
just ugly all the way around against an overmatch team.
I was up 20 to 5 in the first quarter, 20 to 17, and it didn't get much better than that until the fourth quarter.
A lot of questions, certainly about this game.
And you start with the people that were there, the environment was different.
And the heat, obviously, the crazy heat wave that we're going through right now in the state of Iowa, no air conditioning at Carver Hawkeye Arena.
And normally that's only something that you hear during graduation.
That's about the only time that that normally comes up because there's not events there.
But still, you had uncomfortable at the very least.
But boy, a crowd that just never really got into it.
And I'm sure just the environmental factor had probably something to do with that.
But there were nervous moments.
And as Fairly Dickinson, well, every time it felt like Iowa,
was starting to stretch things up.
They would answer with a three-pointer.
But Iowa, outside of Ava Hayden, just didn't have a lot there.
Obviously, this will be about Ava Hayden, once again, just imposing her will inside the size,
the footwork, the tenacity, the understanding.
Iowa struggled, though, after that opening run, when they raced out to the early lead,
getting up 20 to 5, they struggled during the second, third quarters, just getting her many looks.
And a lot of times it was the lack of options on the outside.
a lot of standing around and then, well, we're just going to dump it inside.
You still have to have movement out there.
You still have to swing the ball around.
You still have to have screens up there and be able to come from different angles.
And the high, low game that they like to use with Stolke and with Heighton,
well, when that's not there and that's covered up,
you've got to go a different way.
And you can't just throw it to the wing and try to throw it inside.
There has to be more to it.
And there wasn't for just long stretches of this game,
even as height goes for 29 points and seven rebounds.
Taylor Stremlow, seven assists in the game.
that's good, but you need her shooting. Iowa finishes a game one of 13 from the three point line.
One of 13 from behind the stripe. Chichette had the only three-pointer as she knocked down
one of four that she attempted. Fearbach was 0 for five. She jammed her thumb, did have 11
rebounds and was playing good defense, but on the offensive end, we know she is not an elite
offensive player by any means. She's on the floor for what she does defensively. She gets six
shots. He had a snolkey at 13, 7 of 16, though,
from the free throw line, 16 rebounds,
and it's always that time where you want more from Hannah Stalky.
And there were definitely those moments when it was getting tight
is he wanted to rely on your seat or you wanted to rely on the veteran
that's been in those spots.
And just too many times I thought during the course of this one, they weren't.
In the end, 15 free throws in the fourth quarter, good God,
15 to 23 from the charity stripe and was just an ugly, ugly game.
You move on, you survive.
There's been close calls before.
We've seen a number one seed back in the late 90s get knocked off as Stanford lost to Harvard.
There's a story behind that, but we'll leave that for another day.
That sounds like a summer topic.
But Iowa does get the win.
They move on and how they get the 10 seed, Virginia will be up next for them.
A couple other aspects of this game.
Early on, went to Addie Deal.
She, in fact, had the bucket that made it 20 to 5 as Iowa had their biggest lead of the game.
But you look at the two reserves, and that was all that played.
It was just two players off the bench.
this rotation obviously has been tightened up by Jan Jensen and what she's done with this group
with the injuries to Taylor McCabe, Emily Rodriguez way back.
This team just is not nearly as deep as they once were, but you look at the plus minus
for both of those players.
And plus minus doesn't tell the whole story, but it is a good snapshot, I think.
You go through and you look at the starters.
Plus 17 for Stremlo, plus 13 for Fearbach, plus 18 for Hayden, plus 19 for both Chit-Chatwright
and for Hannah Stolke.
yet the two reserves, negative 19 for Addy Deal and negative 17 for Journey Houston.
Does that mean you're just only going to play your starters?
No, but just something that I thought bear at least mentioning at the very least on this front.
The good news is that Virginia team is going to be playing their third game in five days
as they had to play in the opening round against Arizona State.
Then an overtime game yesterday as they got the upset win as they move on and got the victory
against Georgia. It will be at 1 o'clock as well on Monday afternoon. Absolutely hate it. I know the
university is not happy about it. I know the fan base is not happy about it. You got to play whenever they
schedule you. And on a Monday though, with everything going on, incredibly difficult. People just
getting back. A lot of people were on spring break this week. A kid's out of school. Your first day back,
we're going to pull them out again. Probably not. Parking around there, obviously with the hospital
becomes an even bigger issue as well,
but this is the way that it's going to be.
One o'clock tip off for Iowa
and their matchup against the 10-seed Virginia.
That's what the Hawkeyes are going to get.
A lot of frustration, definitely in this one.
You got the win, okay, you take the victory and you move on,
but the team that we saw, certainly on Saturday,
is not good enough to win a sweet 16 game.
They play that kind of performance against TCU.
They're going to get pumble.
They have to be so much better.
than that. They have to be better than that, I think, to get past Virginia. Now, they're,
according to Fandual, 13-point favorite in that game, I think was a little bit of a surprise,
just how big that one was, but certainly not the performance. I think anybody was hoping for,
looking for a win as a win in the NCAA tournament. You don't get bonus points. This isn't like
wrestling, or you get bonus points for a pin or a technical fall or major. That's not what this is.
You just move on, and that's what the Hawkeye women are going to do. Speaking of wrestling and the
wrestling team, a overall generally successful NCAA tournament.
I don't want to overstate what we saw out of that group.
We're going to talk about that.
An incredible story with Gabe Arnold,
what he was able to do, bumping up two weight classes.
And the finalist streak continues 35 consecutive years with the finalists,
though, did not end the way we wanted to see for Mikey Calli End.
We'll talk about that.
Plus the anatomy of an upset for the Iowa men as they face off against Florida here today.
That's as we continue, locked on Hawkins.
guys. This is moving the game forward by Mazda. For those who know the score never tells
the whole story. There's more to these players than the highlights, the early mornings,
the late night runs, constantly showing up for their squad on and off the clort. And today,
our Mazda moving the game forward is Ava Hayden. What a performance out of Ava,
29 points in the game. Not only what she was doing, scoring, and obviously having half
of the Hawkeyes points and the opening round win against Fairley Dickinson.
but also that tenacity that she brought.
You can see the emotion that she was playing with.
And that is a huge component for what she brings to the floor,
not just an elite level player,
not just an all-American type candidate as just a sophomore,
but the passion.
And they need that kind of performance,
certainly out of Ava Hayden.
The all-new Mazda CX-5 moves the same way.
There's more space connect,
a bold new design, and more intuitive technology.
So you can stay connected to the road.
and every position you play, the all-new Mazda CX-5, more to move every side of you.
Today's episode is also brought to you by Fanduil Sportsbook.
Well, college basketball, as you know right now, it is nonstop.
We got big games, tight spreads, momentum swings every single night.
Early tip-offs to late-night West Coast shootouts, there's always action on the board.
And now Fandual is giving you a way to turn that energy into even bigger potential wins

You want the Hawkeyes, you can, of course, grab them plus the 10 and a half against Florida,
or you want to go crazy, jump aboard with the money line.
Put that together.
Have some other ones on there.
You can apply the profit boost and instantly bump up the potential payout.
Go safe, go bold, ride with the Hawkeyes.
Whatever you want to do, it's your parlay, your style.

it here as we continue and let's jump
in to what we are seeing
on the wrestling mat. So,
So Saturday evening, I told you as I did a little quick hit after the women went final,
was excited to see it.
It didn't go well.
Mitchell Messenbrink is another level guy.
I mean, you talk about elite level, and that's definitely what we saw out of him.
It ends in a technical fall, and that's certainly not the way that anybody wants to see their career
come to a close, right?
It's not obviously what you're looking for at the end.
But still, I think there was so much positive in this tournament.
And some notes on this one.
Iowa finishes in fourth place.
Top four, get a team trophy.
Iwas earned a team trophy at the NCAA 16 to last 18 years.
They have won 50 team trophies and have 71 top 10 finishes.
A finalist, as we mentioned, 35 consecutive years.
And has crowned at least one All-American in 55 straight tournaments going back to 1972.
Iwas had at least four All-Americans in 19 straight seasons and 19 times in Brands 20 seasons.
Iowa with Mikey Calliando at 165.
Patrick Kennedy battling back after he loses in the semis to get third.
Drake Ayala, Ben Keeter, both wrestling above their seed in fifth.
Ryder Block, what a tournament out of him.
I really liked what we saw.
Angelou Ferrarti, he ended up with that foot injury.
He did medically forfeit out after he lost his match on the front side of the bracket.
But the story to be is Gabe Arnold.
And we mentioned a little bit yesterday, but, you know, listening to Gabe after the match with Quint for the ESPN broadcast, you just got this sense of a guy that for a while didn't look like he was going to be a Hawkeye wrestler this summer.
And then it comes back without a slot in the lineup and knew he was going to be a tall task for him to get there.
And then as a season played out, and what happened at 97, I had an opportunity for him just to get on the mat.
he knew he was giving up a ton of size.
And the thing about Gabe Arnold is not only is he a 74-pounder wrestling at 197,
but also it's not like he's a big 74-pounder, right?
Well, he's, what, 5-8, 5-9, something like that?
He's not a tall guy by any means.
And the amount of size, you're watching these matches throughout the course of the week
and just seeing how different the guy said he's wrestling looked.
And he's out there just competing and scrapping and hearing him afterwards talk about it.
importance of it. And there's these stories that just makes sport different than just what's happening.
Iowa falling short of winning national championships and seeing the growing gap that seems to be
continuing now with not just Penn State, but now Oklahoma State and young guns that they have.
You have that component. And the rivalry that's potentially brewing with Oklahoma State and David
Taylor, former Penn State guy and Penn State. And that's good for the sport. Now, we want those things.
But also us as Hawkeye fans, we obviously want Iowa to be.
be in the mix as well.
There was a time a month ago, six weeks ago, two months ago,
when you looked at this squad, what happened to the Penn State duel,
what happened in the regular season finale against Oklahoma State.
And you're thinking, can this team finish in the top of eight?
They finished four.
I get it.
Hawkeye fans, your expectations are national championships.
And that feels a long way away right now with what we're seeing in Stillwater and State College.
I understand that.
I understand the frustration that is definitely there.
The problem, as we've talked about many times before, is there's not an easy answer.
There is not an easy response to go out there to bring in a new coaching staff.
There is nothing that you can point to currently that says, well, this is an easy fix.
It's a tough fix.
And as Tom Brands mentioned in his interview with Chad Lysdikau with the Des Moines Register a few weeks back,
he knows that there's work that needs to be done and there needs to be a time to reevaluate.
But to see this team wrestle well at the end of the season,
feels like it's been such a rarity here recently.
We've seen so many times,
and you're trying to talk yourself into,
well, if we get this break and this happens,
and trying to find a way to get up there
and at least close a gap with Penn State,
and it goes the other direction.
And they're not able to even do that.
And he saw that out of these guys, and you saw a fight.
And we mentioned it in the Big Tens,
after a frustrating, what second session, I think it was,
they came back and wrestled well, and the same thing here.
after quarterfinals certainly didn't go the way that we wanted.
There are a lot of close matches that obviously could have gone the other way for Iowa,
but still to have that component, to have that fight,
I just absolutely love that out of this group and what we're able to see.
So that was my takeaway on the wrestling side.
The portal is going to be open in here in about a week and a half, April 1st,
the transfer portal will open.
Iowa is going to have some pretty major holes to fill in that lineup.
I know there are some young guys that they're certainly excited about.
We'll talk about that a little bit more.
when the time comes and what portal needs and what weight classes make a lot of sense,
what guys are going to be in the portal and what I was going to be able to do in the investment
and not just going out there and finding the most talented guys,
but also finding guys that are fit and guys that can work out for them.
And that's going to be a component of what they're doing also and certainly going forward.
But overall, it's not the success we want, but you can still step back and say this was okay.
This was guys fighting to the end.
I loved hearing from Tom Brands after in his.
interview and hearing him talk about.
Now he's still hurting for Caliando and the way that it finished for him in the championship
match. And there's other guys and the ones that got to see their hand raised for the final
time. And Drake Iiella and Ben Keeter in the fifth place matches and getting that.
And Patrick Kennedy in the third place match and getting that opportunity to have that
Magic Game Arnold. And there's work to be done, no doubt. This is not what anybody strives
for for Iowa wrestling is a fourth place finish. But there's enough good to come out of this,
enough positivity that it doesn't have to always just be doom and gloom when you don't win a
national championship.
Speaking of doom and gloom, Iowa, the Iowa men today, they are going to get their shot against
the defending national champion, the Florida Gators.
They're big, they're deep, they're talented.
What do the Hawkeyes have to do to pull off the upset?
We'll talk about that as we continue.
This is locked on Hawkeyes.

what we saw wrestling and now previewing the Iowa men.
If you're on the audio-only side,
five-star reviews, all that helps us get in front of more Hawkeye fans.
So here it is.
It is Iowa, Florida.
And I know many of you, myself included,
are asking, how is Iowa?
Iowa going to pull this off. You look at this Florida team. They got two huge guys inside with
Alex Condon, what he's able to do, a very skilled, highly, high level defensive player
that could obviously score 6'1 1, he got Ruben Chittaloo, who is 610 thick, a big, big body inside.
Thomas Howe, they're small 4 to 6 foot 9. So he start there and you say, oh boy, this is going to be
tough, right? This is going to be a tough one against a front line that is built like that.
So I start right here, and you start with the pace.
Iowa's got to dictate pace, and I think they're going to be able to do that.
For the most part, Iowa has not had a big problem of slowing teams down.
They're not going to go after offensive rebounds.
That is something that, well, defensive rebounding Florida is great at.
They're not going to get offensive rebounds against this Florida team.
Well, that's good.
We're going to get back.
We're going to play defense.
That's the way that it's going to go.
That's the way that they're going to play.
And one of the things, that is a good thing for Florida.
It's not going to be that good against Iowa because Iowa's not going to go after
the offensive boards. I look back at the last three losses for Florida and look through the three
losses in the SEC tournament against Vanderbilt in the regular season. Lost at home to Auburn
and then also lost at Missouri. Those are the only three losses that they've had since Christmas.
So that also says how good this team is obviously playing in Florida. They are good. There is no doubt
about it. Dictate pace. Don't worry about getting offensive rebounds because you're not going to get them
anyway. Get back. Get on the defensive end. Set your defense every single time.
don't let them run.
They want to play fast.
They want to get out in the breaks.
Those are the things that you want to do.
I was going to be okay on that side of it.
You start with behind the arc.
This is not a great three-point shooting team from Florida.
On the season, they are 315th in the country shooting just 31.2% from behind the arc.
That is something that they're not very good at.
Also, not a great free throw shooting team at 233rd in the country at 71.7%.
So against Missouri,
Missouri and against Auburn.
In both of those games, they were 7 of 27 from behind the arc.
In those two games, they're also held to 74 and 67 points.
Also had 74 against Vandy.
In that game, they were 5 of 17 from behind the stripe.
So there you go.
Very simply, they got to miss shots.
No, easier said than done.
You can't just let them have open three pointers in the lake,
but you have to have a little bit of luck going your way that miss a couple of open threes.
Be good enough on the defensive end where you got a hand in the,
and in the face for the most part, that has to be a component, and they just can't shoot it very well.
This is also not a very deep Florida team.
They don't go very deep outside of Urban, their guard off the bench.
That's about the only guy that plays really significant minutes for them.
We've talked about their back court, Xavier and Lee, Boogie Flynn, fast guys, really good off the bounce.
They are quick off the dribble, and that is a concern certainly against Iowa and what we've seen,
but they're not a great three-point shooting teams.
Give them a little bit of room.
They're going to beat you.
make them beat you from the outside.
Now, from the Iowa perspective,
that's kind of a deep look at what has to happen on that end.
I was going to have to be incredibly efficient.
I mean, we talk about the efficiency of the squad
and what they do on the offensive end of the floor.
We talked about this a little bit yesterday.
You need to have Brennan, excuse me,
you have to have Bennett Sturts.
I'll go absolutely nuclear.
You have one of those performances where he's red hot.
It'll go six of eight from the three point line,
something like that.
dictates everything, controls the game, controls the pace the whole time.
That's what you need, obviously, out of your best player.
But you go through when you look at the other games, and when Iowa played some of the
upper level teams, go back to that game in Hilton against Iowa State.
You had a really good game from Tavion Banks.
He knocked down a couple of three-pointers.
You're going to need something like that.
The secondary scores have to have a good performance.
You're going to need a few of them, too.
It can't just be a good game from Tavion Banks, and that's it.
it's going to have to be Cooper Kach knocks down three four threes.
Kale Combs plays well, slashes, knocks an open three-pointer down, plays great defense.
Man Yao inside is able to do his thing.
