Starting point is 00:00:00 Former five-star guard Addie deal is in the transfer portal. But before you panic, don't. This isn't a program-changing loss for Iowa. We'll tell you exactly why the Hawkeyes are still in a strong point moving forward. You are Locked-on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Hey, welcome in. I'm Trent Condon, and this is the Locked-on Hawkeyes podcast.
Starting point is 00:00:34 Busy show for you today. A lot of news items to get into. Wrestling has made a move or a move was made for them as Bobby Telford. The heavyweight coach has moved on. We'll talk about that a little bit, what that means for the Brands Brothers going forward with the portal, getting ready to open up. We'll talk about the Iowa men's basketball team. Their needs in the portal and what that roster shapes up to look like next season and certainly some excitement starting to brew there. Wade Looking Bill, the former Hawkeye, he was down in Houston for the Sweet 16 and Elite 8.
Starting point is 00:01:04 We'll get his perspective of what he saw, what it meant for former Hawkeyes and a whole lot more coming up here in just a little bit with Wade Lookingville. But we begin with the big news of the day. And that is former five-star guard. Addie Deal has entered the transfer portal after one season at the University of Iowa. She is moving on. And I know this comes as a surprise to a lot of people. You look at the stability that we've certainly seen throughout the years with the Iowa women's basketball team. and when you see something like this.
Starting point is 00:01:34 Addie Deal, who made her commitment a couple of years ago and the excitement that it was coming on the heels of Caitlin Clark and a lot of anticipation, a lot of hope that Addy Deal was just going to take the mantle from Caitlin Clark, and this thing was going to continue. But I thought we saw very early this season that that wasn't going to be the case for Addy Deal. There were certainly some high moments and knocked down a bunch of shots
Starting point is 00:01:56 in the win against Oregon. Of course, the game against Ohio State when we saw Taylor McCabe go down very early in that game. Addie deal came in and definitely played her best game, I thought, of her Iowa Hawkeye career in that one. After that game, she went into the starting lineup, and then Iowa promptly lost three games in a row. The road losses against USC and against UCLA, the home loss and the only home loss
Starting point is 00:02:22 of the season before the NCAA tournament loss to Virginia, fell in that one to Minnesota. After that, we saw Taylor Stremlow go back in the lineup, and from there, Iowa ripped off eight consecutive victories before the loss in the Big Ten tournament to UCLA in the championship game. Expectations were high and certainly were not delivered in year number one. And that is not to say that Addie deal still cannot turn into a very good college player. And you don't want to lose talent like that. Certainly out of your program, you do not want this to become the norm. And we look what's happening right now in Ames with Bill Fennelly's women's basketball team
Starting point is 00:02:57 and the amount of structure that they have lost in what, eight, nine roster players now have departed with eligibility still remaining with them and what that means for their program. But back to Addie Deal and back to Iowa here. It is a blow, but I don't see it as a significant one. I mentioned the Ohio State game, but just so many times throughout the course of the season, yes, I know players improve. I know we see improvement, but you're just waiting to see when the light bulb was really going to come on for it.
Starting point is 00:03:26 And it never happened. And many times, we also have to remember that not all the recruiting analysts, get exactly right and are going to nail it every single time. And I don't think we saw much in her freshman campaign that made you believe that she was going to be an all big 10 type of performer, a first team, a player that can put their team on their back and win you a bunch of games. I didn't see enough of that over the course of the season that this is a big freakout. Now, yes, you still need to go out there and Iowa need shooting.
Starting point is 00:03:57 And they're need to be able to find some players in the portal that are certainly going to help this group and and help this team going forward. But when you just look at the numbers this year, 5.1 points per game. She shoots 39% from the floor, 29% from the three point line on the season, 68% from the free throw line for a guard, average one rebound a game. I had more turnovers than assists this season. There's nothing that it points, even as a freshman, even going through growing pains, that this is going to be a devastating loss and that we need to throw a bunch of arrows at Jen Jan Jensen, that she was not able to keep her around this year. And you definitely do have to wonder.
Starting point is 00:04:36 I mean, this is the time where coaches and players are getting together and they're going through and they're having the conversation, what next season's going to look like. And there's been plenty of talk already about Iowa going out, looking at guards in the portal. We don't know how that conversation went, but certainly we can speculate. And I think when you speculate and say that this is not going to be at a deal, here's the keys to the car, just do whatever you want, that you're going to be guaranteed a starting spot going into next season.
Starting point is 00:05:03 I don't believe that's the case because we just didn't see enough. But another thing is when you look at the tweet that she sent out, and I thought this said a lot certainly about the situation. So the social media posts that Eddie Deal put out here earlier on Monday was this. Thank you to my amazing teammates, all the incredibly wonderful fans, my business partners, and the Iowa City community for their support over the first year. I've learned a lot during my freshman season. I look forward to continue to grow as a result. So the business partners won, I don't know. It just struck me at odd. The last sentence of the
Starting point is 00:05:42 tweet that she put out, thank you to the staff at the University of Iowa. I will always appreciate my time here. Again, not devastating. If this is something that you're going to use as ammunition against Jan Jensen, I just can't buy it. She wasn't good enough. And when opportunities were there, she did not step up in a big time way outside of really two games throughout the course of this season. Also, by the time next basketball season, her sophomore year is going to start, she's going to be 22 years old. This is not your typical 18-year-old showing up on campus. She turned 21 in the first couple of weeks when semester started last fall. I mean, that also shows you, mention the recruiting side of things.
Starting point is 00:06:25 I can't get overly upset about this. I think you all know if you're an everyday listener, certainly how frustrated I can get and how I can look at things and definitely paint a picture. And when a coaching staff needs to be ripped, I have no problem with that. I thought the offensive execution against Virginia was deplorable. I think there's plenty of things that you can definitely question about this one.
Starting point is 00:06:50 But I'm not going to go there with Addy deal. I'm not going to go there and say that this is a devastating loss for this program and they're never going to be able to recover. Now, we'll see what they do in the portal. And there's definitely work that needs to be done there to improve this team and approve this roster with the opportunity that they certainly have in front of them with all the positive momentum. Obviously, that was created by Caitlin Clark, get back to the tournament the last two years. Need to take a step forward. We'll see if they're going to be able to do that.
Starting point is 00:07:17 But that aside, here we are. Some more news as well. Callie Levine also is departing the program. Not a big surprise there. We saw her really good defensive player and another guard in the back. court. That is going to be something that needs to be certainly hit hard in the transfer portal for Iowa and finding some shooting out there. Anticipation, obviously, as we talked about throughout the course of the season, that Emily Rodriguez also will be joining in the transfer portal,
Starting point is 00:07:43 though, nothing else. And we'll see if there's more to it, if there's more players that are in there, if there's some big surprises, that's definitely going to be a different type of conversation at this point in time. But the news of the day, Addie Deal, departing the University of Iowa and in the transfer portal. We'll come back on the other side. Let's talk some men's basketball. A former Hawkeye Hooper, Wade Looking Bill is going to join us. His perspective from down in Houston and the future of the Iowa football basketball program,
Starting point is 00:08:09 what Ben McCollum did in year number one, absolutely outstanding. And a lot of hope going forward that this is going to continue in a big time way. We'll talk to Wade next as we continue. This is Locked on Hawkeyes. What if sports were traded like markets? Now you can put your sports IQ to work in real time with Robin Hood. prediction markets. Houston watching Iowa and the Illinois collide. And Wade joins us to put a bow on the season. As always, Wade, thank you for what you do for Trent
Starting point is 00:11:21 and I during the season. We're much appreciative to pick your brain and to you to share your knowledge with our audience. So just a phenomenal season for 32 minutes on Saturday. I'm guessing you kind of had the same feeling I did as a boy, there's a chance. I was got another game coming up next weekend. But then just the final few minutes, it did not end well. But you know what a pretty fun season. Terrific ride for McCollum's first year. It really was. You know, I think they just had ups and downs and they lost that Minnesota but played Iowa State tough, lost at Penn State, B, Florida, 3-6, or Elite 8, 3-16 win, obviously.
Starting point is 00:12:02 Just couldn't really ask for much more. Wonderful season. Definitely was. Let's go back first against Illinois. And what we saw, Iowa comes out on fire, just absolutely out 12 to 2 lead. And, yes, already thoughts of Indianapolis starting to creep into minds. I know across the arena and people text in and making phone calls. but you saw the size, the size advantage that is there.
Starting point is 00:12:24 And I think definitely shows us going forward. You need that rim protector. Man Yao, I mean, that guy battled as much as he could, definitely throughout the course of this season. But he is not your traditional center. And another question I kind of had going hand in hand with that, what does a traditional center look like in Ben McCollum's scheme if they do find one of those guys in the portal?
Starting point is 00:12:43 Yeah, you know, so just real quick with Illinois, you know, Ben Sturtz was abusing Tyler and Boswell. You know, it's just that kid, you know, he looks overweight. It was the strangest thing. It looks like he's gained weight. But they take him out, bring Stoyakovich. Then you got Wogler at the point at 6'6, Pace's kid 6, 7, and it goes up from there. They just, they were just so big.
Starting point is 00:13:11 You know, so to answer your question, the problem with finding a rim protector, there's two things. They're so limited. You know, I love Trevin Europe. I think he's going to be a great college player. He can do a lot of things, stretch defenses, pass the ball, handle it, toughness, but he's not a rim protector. So now you've got to go find one. The best ones are going to go to Duke and Yukon and Michigan
Starting point is 00:13:39 and play one year and go to the NBA. So then there's a handful of others that are on the market, so to speak. I was talking to some people down and I was down in Houston that know things. And it's two and a half, three million. You get a kid like that. And again, there's not that many of them out there. So what does he look like? You know, you saw the Akara kid played a couple years at Ohio.
Starting point is 00:14:05 He transferred to Tennessee really pretty limited offensively, but catches lobbed and protects the rim. And that's what you need, whether it's in, I major college level. You see that in the NBA with Rudy Gobert made a $300 million doing that, you know, because he's 7-2 athletic to protect the rim and block shots and catch love. But are there 25 kids like that in the country? There's not many.
Starting point is 00:14:33 It's tough. It's going to be hard. Andrew McKeever's a name that I think a lot of people get excited about. I'm not sure he'll ever see the set foot in the state of Iowa, unless he's playing a game here with the St. Mary's ties and Jefferson. and ties maybe some connection there to Iowa State, but he's 7-2 averages, 8 points, 9 rebounds as a sophomore. So that's $2.5 million right there, Wade.
Starting point is 00:14:54 That's nuts. I don't know if that even gets you a callback from the kids' ages. You know, it's like it is, I heard numbers about kids that are on the Iowa's team that I just shook my head, but these people know. And it's not going down, you know, it's, it's not going down. But that's a whole other conversation. but it was such a good year. I think you're right.
Starting point is 00:15:16 It's rim protection, and they just got to get more athletic. They're not bad. You know, Pete Sage, athletes, Isaiah Howard athlete, it's just that they need, instead of Pace Sage at 6'7, they need a couple guys that are 6'9 like that.
Starting point is 00:15:32 And then, going back to Saturday, the whole Fogaris thing was really interesting. The minutes that he got or didn't get it, it was a head scratcher, for sure. No doubt. You mentioned what we saw to Tate Sage and a guy that we definitely saw the glimpses this year. I mean, I go back to the summer and Ken and I'd have somebody on that was over at practice and said, Tate Sage, because his name continues to pop up like this guy, well, this guy was an absolute stud this year and took it another step further during the tournament.
Starting point is 00:16:02 Shoots 39% from behind the arc. We know the athleticism. When he talk about upside and what he still can become, that's like one heck of a building block with Tate Sage, what you saw to him and what he's going to be going forward. Yeah, he could be a pro. I mean, I saw him that, what was it, Friday night, and he's every bit of six-eight. You know, sometimes you see those kids and they're like six-six and a quarter, but he's every bit of six-eight. His brother is in the transfer portal.
Starting point is 00:16:28 I think that's correct. Actually was talking or is talking with you and I, I think. Okay. So I think something like that would help if they could keep the twins in state, you know, as far as, you know, what options Tate's going to have. But if or when, when he comes back to Iowa in the fall, he's going to be really good. He's got a chance. And, you know, again, you're talking about him.
Starting point is 00:16:53 Trey Thompson is a really good player. You watch him in warmups, and you're like, man, that kid has got a chance. Now, he's not a long ways to go. But, you know, Cam, Fogaris comes back, you know, maybe Tavian Bank gets that year, you know, get a point guard, get the kid from Storm Lake. I mean, get some pieces. The kid from, you from Seattle or wherever, he's from northwest part of the country. They got some pieces. It's just, you know, now is the, is the Wild West, whether it's Ben Jacobson leaving, whether it's guys that are in the portal.
Starting point is 00:17:24 Well, you got to just almost start over. Yeah, well, let me get your take on Ben Jacobson leaving. Right time to do it. Great coach. Yeah. Great coach. You know, he turned the Minnesota job down 10 years ago, when it was. I think it's great.
Starting point is 00:17:37 I think Utah. So one of my dear friends played at Utah State. They've had three head coaches the last three years because they go there. They go 27 and 5. Yes. And then they go to Cincinnati or they go somewhere else. I think Ben's a great city, 55, bring some stability. Got 8, 10, 12 more really good years.
Starting point is 00:17:58 Now, the system he runs is not what Utah State's used to, but I think he provides some stability, great coach. I think it's a great hire maybe for Ben. Obviously not for you and I, but they're just coming time. when you got to let people go and find the next one. You know, I want to go back to Houston and seeing you was great. Seeing you and Greg Bruner and all these former players and you guys up there. And I knew there was a big group of you former players that were sitting together.
Starting point is 00:18:28 What that's like. And after we've talked about the 27 years, the 39 years since the elite eight, all these different things and this connection that you guys have all to the Iowa basketball team, just what it was like all getting together and seeing that, eight minutes away from a final four. Yeah, so it was a lot of ex-player, and I tell you even more so, it was a lot of ex-players that grew up in the state of Iowa. I think that was kind of even more looking back profound, especially for me now as I get
Starting point is 00:18:57 old. I was there with my daughter, who was a senior at Iowa, and it just was a 48-hour adventure. And you were there, Trent. That whole scene felt like a tailgate before Iowa State football game. It was outdoors and barbecue. you know, drink, weather was great, and it just was, people were excited. And I think, you know, obviously they hope the game would go a little better, but I think the excitement's there. It's just something where can they, can they keep it up? Can they, you know, there's talk. They're
Starting point is 00:19:27 trying to raise tens of millions of dollars for actual true carver renovation. You know, it, it needs some refreshing. Can they, can they get some players in? Can they keep players that they have. I think they can because, you know, again, everybody's going to get some type of money, you know, if you're a good player, but then do you want to win? And hey, here's a style that they, one year ago, they had no players on that roster. Zero. Now, they had the Drake guys and Cooper was probably going to come back, but they had zero kids on the roster. Just think what he can do with, you know, now a full year, two years, three years. I'm excited. People should be excited. And the brand building that he's done during this run, I mean, he did miss an opportunity to do a national TV or radio hit. And why wouldn't you? He gets it. He's selling his program. No doubt about you do either you know this because I heard it over Saturday as well. And McCollums brought it up that Bennett Sturts took a pay cut to come to Iowa. Either of you have any idea how big of a pay cut that was. I mean, the top level guys were making $3.5.4 million. Did he make a million? Yeah. Yeah. He was about 1.5. The estimates, the rumbly.
Starting point is 00:20:37 that were out there. So, yeah, he could have made. I think that's pretty common. Probably double that. Isn't that something? Yeah. I don't think there's any question. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:45 Who does he? Where, how about 15, 20 years from now? How will Bennett Sturts be remembered here, Wade? You know, it is, that's a good, it's really unique, you know, because he was in Iowa city for, what, nine months? You know, I saw him, I saw him last April at this event in Des Moines, and he was getting ready for finals at Drake. You forget that he still had to finish his coursework at Drake late.
Starting point is 00:21:06 late April, early May, before he even got to Iowa City. You know, I think he has Ben will be tied together as one. I think that's one that when you mention Ben, you'll mention Bennett and vice versa. Because, you know, what this team would have been
Starting point is 00:21:26 without Bennett's search is a shell of what they were. Ben's a great coach. Now, don't get me wrong, but you got a top 20, top 25 first round pick running the show that knows your sister. system, it was amazing. I think he will be loved and revered. And just, again, it's just hopefully the start of a great story to tell. Wait, I posed this a little bit earlier when we were talking with Scott Docterman and just how this looks going forward. Bennett Sturts is he's not a
Starting point is 00:21:56 generational guy. He's always going to have good point guards. And you go back to Northwest Missouri State. That's what you heard. He might not recruit the best point guard, but every year, he's going to build the best point guard. And that's what you're going to get out of Ben McCullough. But what do you look at the way that they kind of had to play this year and you look at it going forward? What do you think the end game kind of looks like? When Ben McCollum gets exactly what he wants roster-wise, how is this basketball team going to play? I think it'll be similar. I think it'll be, you know, that slowdown, grind it out because they're never going to have Michigan athletes.
Starting point is 00:22:28 You know, they're never going to have probably even Illinois athletes. But if you can find a take stage even every other year, keep him around, develop him, sprinkle in some transfers. They got, you know, maybe get a foreign connection with, with Bolgeras, keep that going. I think they really have a chance to build something here. You know, but it's just going to come down to resources, whatever that means, whether it's money or facilities or pay for the coaches. That's one thing.
Starting point is 00:23:00 But if you can get talent and it doesn't have to be, you know, Michigan type of transfer talent, If it can just be fairly competitive, and then you win that game Saturday, and you get, you get Yukon next Saturday. You know, Yukon's got, they have holes, they have war, you know, they couldn't, they can't shoot great. So you never know. You never know. It's not a seven game. I think you and I talk, Saturday was not a seven NBA, or seven game NBA series, right, where the best team is going to win, because you got to beat them four times. They just had to beat them that one time, and that was Saturday.
Starting point is 00:23:37 They were close. Like Ken said, 32 minutes, and they had them. Wade, looking, Bill. Wade, thanks for doing this all season, man. Truly appreciate your wisdom and your insight onto Hawkeye Basketball over the years. Wade, thanks, pal. Anytime, you guys.
Starting point is 00:23:51 Thank you so much. Yep, good to talk to Wade looking, Bill. Thanks once again to Wade for his time and his insight always enjoyed talking Hawkeye basketball with Wade, a guy that was on the hardwood for the Hawkeyes. Loves the program. He's been there, supporting the team throughout the years. Great to see him down in Houston. and so many of the former players that were down there as well.
Starting point is 00:24:11 A lot of fun conversations, a lot of great talking, hearing from former players, assistant coaches, managers, and the like. There's a great time down there in Houston. It just came up a little bit short. Well, what does that roster exactly look like? And potentially some really exciting news about one of the guys we didn't get to see this season. That's next as we continue, Locked on Hawkeyes. It's time once again for the five-hour energy flavor draft.
Starting point is 00:24:39 18 different flavors to choose from, including new options like confetti craze, fruity rainbow, or cotton candy. There's something for everyone. The board is set. The flavors are ready, and I got my number one pick for the five-hour energy draft. Now, coming back from Houston, yes, a little bit bleary-eyed, need a little bit of a boost, and I'm going solid with my number one pick. I'm just going cherry, bold cherry candy-style flavor, sweet with a little bit of tart edge. Classic red fruit profile, bright, punchy taste, smooth and easy.
Starting point is 00:25:09 to recognize. Now, you want to go a little bit off the board later on in the draft? We can do just that. How about a blue raspberry? Sweet, tangy flavor with a taste that nature just couldn't make, but should have. Bold blue raspberry candy flavor, smooth, easy drinking texture. Absolutely love it. Talking about value. That is blue raspberry a little bit later on in the draft. Five-hour energy shots give you a boost with zero sugar. Five-hour energy has lots of upcoming flavor innovations planned. Find the flavor that you like to see made over at 5hourenergy.com. Find your new favorite flavor of 5 hour energy shots available online,
Starting point is 00:25:48 5hourenergy.com or on Amazon. That's 5hourenergy.com. Trent, kind of back with you one final time here on the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast. Thanks for being with us and making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day. We got football talk coming your way tomorrow as we will be right around the corner here from Kirk Barrens, some of the biggest questions for Iowa football as spring practice continues for them. Great to see. There's been some highlights that have been coming out. A couple of good glimpses at the quarterback spot from Jeremy Hacklinski. Definitely gets you excited and fired up.
Starting point is 00:26:24 We'll talk about some football, some Hawkeye football with you tomorrow. But wrap it up here and finish the conversation on Iowa basketball. And the portal will open on Wednesday. We will see potentially some names out there. Also some news. Tom Kekert from hawkeyey report.com is that Jayton Coon will make a visit to the University of Iowa, the Storm Lake product, where Ben McCullum, excuse me, where he spent a lot of time. We had a lot of Ben Jacobson talk today, leaving you and I. Ben McCollum, of course, grew up in Storm Lake and connections back there to Northwest Iowa. Former Creighton commit, and he is going to be on campus at the University of Iowa.
Starting point is 00:27:04 As I mentioned yesterday, a lot of speculation that this is not quite a formality, but Iowa in a really good position to get his services. He's big 6-7 type of player, a guy that didn't shoot it percentage-wise very well, but you look at the stroke, really repeatable form, big, strong athletic, really like his prototype and what he can potentially do if he does make the commitment to Iowa. Excited about that. A couple of thoughts.
Starting point is 00:27:30 And speaking to Tom, he had an opportunity down in Houston to talk to Trey Thompson during the game in between the Sweet 16 and the late 8, the day off. They're in between on Friday. And Tom mentioned that Trey Thompson let it slip, that as they, of course, track all their shots during the course of practice, Trey Thompson shot 47 percent during practice. That's what Thompson said. And that definitely gets you excited. They're bringing in Ethan Harris as well, Beacon Zaga for his services, a Washington kid.
Starting point is 00:28:00 It doesn't happen very often. You're able to get them out of the home state. Washington was also involved. So beat a couple of home state schools to get Ethan Harris's services. They got that prototype, right? Those kind of guys that you get excited about what we saw during the freshman campaign from Cooper Cotch, from Tate Sage, the returners. You get Cam Maniow back for another season and potentially him playing more his natural position, playing a little bit more four, maybe some backup five if they can find a big man in the transfer portal.
Starting point is 00:28:29 Kale Combs comes back, another ball handler. We certainly saw glimpses. We know what a good defender. He can be out there. That's exciting to have him back. potentially Tavion Banks if he does get another year of eligibility with his Jucco season. If that is awarded his way, if there's some kind of injunction that happens or a court case that goes the way that he'll be back for another year.
Starting point is 00:28:51 Alvaryl Fulgaris will see about him. Triving your rock, I think all our listeners are every day or certainly know my thoughts on Trev and that unique skill set that he has at 6'10, 611, and just gets quicker on the defensive end. He can shoot it from the outside. He is a great distributor. He led Valley during their third state championship run and assists that season. Really good guy and a really smart basketball player. And you think the game is going to slow down for him, obviously, with that skill set that he has.
Starting point is 00:29:19 And now it's about finding a point guard, finding a big guy, another ball handler, go along with combs. Maybe another shooter also could be something that you're looking for in the transfer portal. But with everything that happened during this run and all the positive publicity that came Iowa. you're definitely excited and think that Ben McCollum's going to be able to deliver in a big time way. Finally, one note from wrestling. As Bobby Telford is departing the program, he's going to move on and get into medical sales. But we talked a lot about the need of change and not going to make a change at top.
Starting point is 00:29:53 Tom Brands is going to be back for another season. Well, what do you want to do? Shake up the staff and get, you know, potentially some guys that go. Now, Telford did a great job. and you look at for years and years and years, it was always about the little guys in Iowa, the little guys in the middle guys, and maybe some struggles at some of those upper weights,
Starting point is 00:30:10 and that has not been the case under Telford as he's delivered in a big time way. So that will be an adjustment, a staff shakeup that has to happen now about that. What does that mean? I know people potentially throwing out some different names out there. We'll definitely keep an eye on that one. But Bobby Telford, guy that did a really good job,
Starting point is 00:30:29 going to be moving on from Iowa wrestling. That'll do it for today. Again, more football talk come your way tomorrow.
