Starting point is 00:00:00 The Iowa football offense still has some big questions and big position battles. Three position battle groups that will decide just how good the Iowa Hawkeyes are in 2026. You are Locked on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day. Hey, welcome in. I'm Trent Condon, and this is the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast, your daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast. Iowa wrestling in the news today as they have announced a home-and-home schedule and a fun one, a team that they have not seen in a long time will fill you in on the details of a renewed rivalry happening for the Hawkeyes coming up the next two years. We're going to be joined as well by David Eichold from Hawkeye Insider.com.
Starting point is 00:00:51 A bunch of different topics to get into with David. We'll talk about the football team. Some of the question marks that still linger for him as we make our way through these summer months. We'll talk some basketball as well, both men's and women's for the Hawkeyes. and talk a little bit about him with Caitlin Clark and what continues to happen there in the WMBA. But we begin today's show with a look at the biggest questions and position group battles that are happening with this squad on the Iowa football team coming up for this year. The position battle groups that I believe are going to make the difference if this offense is going
Starting point is 00:01:25 to take a step forward and be successful this year or if it's going to be kind of more of what we've seen here recently. Even the improvements that we've seen, scoring, yard, certainly the run game over the first two seasons of Tim Lester at the helm of the offense. Now taking those next decks, what's that going to be? And we, of course, are talking about the passing game. Number three on the list, this position group battle that is going to linger, I believe deep into things, is who is going to be the number three receiver?
Starting point is 00:01:53 I truly believe that the top two are set, that Reese Van der Z back a healthy season, hopefully in front of him. He's going to be your big target on the outside. And what we continue to hear about Tony Diaz, the transfer from Texas Rio Grande Valley that he is going to come in and he is going to be impactful right away. I think there is no doubt about it. I think he is going to be a very solid player at minimum for them and the hope that there can be even more. So if you feel confident about your top two and I certainly do and about as confident as I've been for two wide receivers for Iowa football,
Starting point is 00:02:26 then you look at number three because in the Lester system, yes, there are more three wide receiver sets. We've seen them utilize that more. Yes. And, means you don't have as many tight ends out there. The fullback has gone the way of the dodo bird, all those different things. This is something that this number three receiver, who's going to step up? And there's a bunch of candidates that can do it. And I'm not going to mention everybody here, but Evan James, who comes in out of the transfer portal.
Starting point is 00:02:51 We've talked so much about Tony Deavitt Diaz. And in a way, maybe we've forgotten a little bit about Evan James and the impact that he can provide right away for this squad. Is it him? Is it KJ Parker that it feels like the coaching staff? This is a guy that they just absolutely love, that he is going to be a guy that is going to find a role. He's going to play at a high level for them
Starting point is 00:03:11 and going to be an impact player. You talk about big plays. It feels like KJ Parker's name is a guy that comes up very often when you're talking about those big plays. How about Jared Bowie? This is a guy that, well, by the wayside a year ago, was dealing with some injuries. I think everybody had him targeted for the transfer portal.
Starting point is 00:03:29 Of course, Dayton Howard, a lot of experience there. Look at some of the freshmen like Xavier Stinson. I mean, there's a bunch of different guys, but who can step into that role and become, at minimum, a solid number three guy. If Vander Z's doing his thing, if Diaz is out there and becoming a stud, something we haven't seen in quite a while at the wide receiver position for the Hawkeyes, that number three receiver is going to be important. Along the offensive line, I really don't have anything there because I think your starters are set. Trevor Lout at left tackle, Jack Dostler at right tackle, inside Layton Jones, Cade Piper at center, and likely Michael Menzlinsky, if healthy, at the other spot. And because of that, yes, Lucas O'Geyer's going to get some run.
Starting point is 00:04:09 Can Can Canne lander go out there and push Jack Dostler at the right tackle position? Can we see one of the young guys? Maybe it will Nolan finally start to pop? Whatever it may be, offensive line, I think the starters are solidly established. They're not going to hand out starting positions. That's not what they do. That's not what happens in Iowa football. But I do think we feel pretty good about that run.
Starting point is 00:04:30 The next position group battle that I am really interested in is what happens at the running back spot. We've talked a lot about Kamari Molton, and I think there's another gear for him coming up this season. But just overall, with LJ Phillips coming in after a hugely successful year at South Dakota a year ago, rushing for nearly 2,000 yards, low, compact, good, solid runner. How much he's pushing Moulton this year. Xavier Williams. Of course, Nathan McNeil, who just has so much talent, you can see it from that young guy. He just glides the way he moves out there. You got Brevin Dahl.
Starting point is 00:05:02 You got Braden Jackson. The different options that they have at this spot. Just more than anything, how this shakes out. Because does it become truly a timeshare? Where it's Bolton and Phillips that are basically splitting carries. And then the other guys that are mixing in from time to time and maybe finding the right skill set and the right position for those guys. But it's overall.
Starting point is 00:05:21 That's number two on my list. What is going to happen there? I left out tight end because DJ Vonamy, yes, stud. Good. You got a stringback. Love that. Ortwer's still around. They love Thomas Meyer. Some of the young guys there at the tight end position, I don't really think that's a battle, but of course number one is the battle at the quarterback's spot. Hank Brown, Jeremy Hedlinski, and we will continue to dissect, take different avenues, talk to some people, see what we can find out about how this is ultimately going to shake out. We're not going to hear anything about who the starter's going to be from Kirk Ferrence when we get to Big Ten Media Days. We're not going to hear anything at Iowa football media days.
Starting point is 00:05:58 Those things are not going to happen. However, it is important to find that guy. And that is why this is incredibly important to make the right decision, to be able to do it and kind of dive head first into it on top of that. Quarterback, it's an easy one, but definitely number one of the position group battles going in here to the deep summer. We continue lockdown Hawkeyes. excited to bring in our old friend David Eichold from hawkeye insider.com.
Starting point is 00:06:23 He's going to join us. got a bunch of different things I want to talk to David about. Want to get into some football topics with him. I want to talk a little basketball as well, both on the men's and the women's side. But I also want to get his perspective on Caitlin Clark and the WMBA and what is happening there. Such a toxic situation. What is going on?
Starting point is 00:06:41 David covered obviously Caitlin for four years. I know he had a really good relationship with her. Just want to get his perspective on what this is going on in the WMBA. We're talking about it next. Stay right there. This is your daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast. Locked on Hawkeyes. We're back with more in a moment. Starting point is 00:08:11 Thanks for being with us and making Lockdown Hawkeyes, your first listen every day, your daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast. David Eichol joins us. Now he's got a podcast, him and the crew, over at hawkeye insider.com. The Swarmcast, how often do we get to hear you guys? I know it's not every day because I'd be listening to you every day. It's about once a week. we're going to up that to two here shortly.
Starting point is 00:08:31 I actually just posted a new series of podcast, first of many. Hopefully, I had an hour sit down with George Barnett. I'm calling it the Hawkeye session, and we drove deep into his background and how he really turned around the Iowa offensive line because Lord knows, Trent, five years ago, they desperately needed that turnaround and this sort of kick in the butt, and that was a really engaging conversation.
Starting point is 00:08:54 But, yeah, man, things are well. And, you know, here's hoping we actually have, some product on the field we'll be all to talk about in like nine, 10 weeks from now or so. I think it's under 10 weeks now, under 10 weeks now. We're getting there. We're getting closer and closer to football season. I open up the show today talking a little bit about the offense and some of the position battle groups I think that are going to do it.
Starting point is 00:09:15 Obviously quarterback number one on that. And that's one that we've talked about. We're going to be talking a whole lot more leading up to the opener against Northern Illinois. Speaking of George Barnett in that offensive line, I believe it's set. I think it's set as long as Michael Messlinski's healthy. I think it's going to be the tackles that we anticipate. Obviously, Lalk, Piper in the middle.
Starting point is 00:09:33 You feel like the five guys that they have there are settled. Do you see it the same direction or do you think there's going to be battle somewhere on that offensive line? I think it's mostly settled. I think the big key to that offensive line is Michael Mislinski. Because if they're not confident in right guard, I wouldn't be surprised if they throw Ms. Linsky back at center and they throw Keefer back at right guard. Again, I don't think that that's the most likely scenario. I think the most likely scenario is it's going to be a rotation between.
Starting point is 00:10:02 I'm going to look at Lucas Allgaier. I think he's going to be all to make an appearance in the 2D. I know they're really excited about him. Michael Mislensky, I think, will be at right guard or at least in the mix. They're very confident in Jack Outsler and to see him kind of take that step up. And again, I think you look at the rest of the offensive line. And I'll throw another name out there. Maybe Trent Wilson.
Starting point is 00:10:22 I mean, I know they really like what they have out of him. I know they want to continue to put on the good strength and kind of get him ingrained in the program, but I think they're about seven to eight deep right now, Trent. I think that, yes, they're going to take a step back without question, but that's what happens when you lose three guys to the NFL draft. Obviously, Trevor Lough will probably be a second, first or second team, all big 10. I would normally say first in any other conference, but the amount of great tackles are on the big 10. It's kind of hard to tell somebody say, sure fire first team all big 10, but I do think for the most part it will be set. But again,
Starting point is 00:10:57 I think it's going to heavily rely on, is Michael Mislinski going to be healthy enough to take that next step? And I'll say this, another guy that people have not talked enough about, I think Layton Jones is going to be really good this year at left guard. They've been very high on him within the program. I know he's a little bit of an undersized guard, only about six foot two, two hundred ninety pounds. But that's a guy who over the last 18 months or so has really impressed a lot of people. I think he's going to a really nice job when he steps in there. Another spot is running back and how that plays out. I've said it a ton.
Starting point is 00:11:29 I think there's another gear to Kamari Bolton. You had that shoulder injury early on. I remember us talking that week about the possibility. As Bolton even going to be able to go against Rutgers? And he didn't. He carried the ball a whole lot more than they anticipated. And that shirt, certainly, I'm sure, impacted him a year ago. But you bring an L.J. Phillips out of the portal.
Starting point is 00:11:46 You got Nathan McNeil, who just is so smooth out there, so versatile. Xavier Williams, Brevindoll, Braden Jackson, the depth that they have there. and how that shakes out. Ultimately, do you see this turning into a timeshare, or do you see one of these guys taking it and running, a guy that's going to get a majority of the reps and a majority of the snaps this season? I mean, I think Camari Molten's earned the right to start every game next season
Starting point is 00:12:08 if he's healthy, at least see how he kind of gets going. Because, again, I don't think his stats doing justice from last season. I mean, he's 868 yards. He never crossed 100 yard mark, which is kind of incredible, honestly. But, you know, I think those shoestring tackles really hurt him because there were about one or two times a game where you really thought he was going to break it. I think he'll do a better job of that this year. And let's be real.
Starting point is 00:12:31 Love Mark Garnowski. He stole some touchdowns from Kamari Molton when Moulton got inside the five-yard line, right? I think Moulins are in the right to start every game. I love L.J. Phillips. I think he's going to be a perfect fit for this offense. I think he's going to continue to kind of emerge there. But then, like you said, you have Xavier Williams, Nathan McNeil. They go a legitimate four deep.
Starting point is 00:12:52 And I think they're going to need all four guys. step up throughout the season. We know how beat up running backs can typically get. Right now, I got to say, I think Nathan McNeil will eventually win that third running back spot. I still think he's behind the other three at this point in time. But again, ball camp is one of these boughs are really going to be decided. I think L.J. Phillips will eventually move into that number two role. But again, I think you need to buy stock into the equity that Moulton has within the program and all of the good things he can do because not only can he run, he can catch the ball out of the back field. I thought he was a much better blocker than I anticipated him being last season.
Starting point is 00:13:28 But that's going to be something that's sort of mixed and match depending on the matchup that they're going to play. But again, I think molten, you have to buy stock and then you have to give him the respect to you deserves. And ultimately, I think he's going to be the one that really pushes that running back room forward. David Eichol joining us from hawkye insider.com as we talk some Hawkeye football. We'll get into basketball here in the moment. One more on the football front though, David. And amongst the defensive line, you said, it. I've said it. I think everybody has said it. Defensive tackle is incredibly concerning. I like Bryce Stevenson. I think that's another guy that has another gear and he's going to have
Starting point is 00:14:01 to be a really, really good player this year for Iowa to be able to hold up. Bryce Hawthorne, big shoes that he's going to have out there and asking to do it a lot. But from Stevenson, Alibaggio, the defensive ends with Camari Brown in gold, or maybe one of the youngsters. Give us a name on the defensive line outside of the ones we know. Kenneth Meriwether, Yosea, epinessa hawthorne give me somebody else that you're confident you think at minimum is going to have a good solid productive year yeah you know i do feel bad for stevenson to some degree because you got thinking about the fcs to big 10 jump in one year gap is so ridiculous i think that's why when you look at how iowa attack the portal this is there's a reason why most the guys they got are two years of
Starting point is 00:14:43 eligibility or more because they want to have that one year where they can learn and grow in the system and then they're hoping they can take off my one of my favorite acquisitions is a guy you mentioned, I still think he's under the radar. I love Kamari Brown, man. I really do. Six foot two, about 255 pounds or so, I would say, probably needs to add another five pounds, but he is strong. Like he, if you look at some of the pictures from spring practice, like his calves are like tree trunks, a ton of lower body strength. He's a pure pass rushing specialist. Tied the Elon career sack record in only two years of eligibility there, had 12 and a half last season.
Starting point is 00:15:22 I think the big thing for him is can he learn how to play the run and seal the edge more than he had to do it. Elon is like, all right, go in there, go get the quarterback, go hit him as hard as you can. He's very point of attack base, has a ton of violent hands, never stops moving his hands, which I think is a very underrated trait
Starting point is 00:15:40 from some of these defensive linemen. So I think Kamari Brown, I think he'll be a little bit of a slower start for him and just trying to earn his role and getting the nitty gritty of how Iowa likes to run this. system. But again, the tape doesn't lie to you. He has the athleticism to be able to compete in the Big Ten. If you can keep that same sort of explosiveness while adding on to the weight, Iowa needs a couple of pure pass rushers. I think he's a guy. Look, I'm not saying he's a double-digit guy,
Starting point is 00:16:06 but he can go out there and give you up four and a half, five sacks, do a nice job, sealing the edge, doesn't, you know, opens the gap for a lot of these linebackers. I think that that is an outstanding momentum boost for him going into that next year of eligibility because again Iowa can have him for a couple more years especially this five for five rule as being in place. I think that benefits a program like Iowa. So I'm buying stocking and Camari Brown. Again, it took me about 35 seconds of when I turned on his film and be like, yeah, that's a guy who probably is going to be able to play in the Big Ten. Looking forward to that and finding those pieces that work up front because we know that's kind of the bedrock of Iowa football. Over to basketball here for a moment.
Starting point is 00:16:47 David, we haven't spoken since the announcement. Another game in Sioux City, the women's game against Vaynerbilt had already been announced. Now, another one over there with Virginia Tech. A fun one here for Ben McCollum and how he built this schedule. No exempt tournament. It's going to look a little bit different this year. But overall, really like what they're doing. I mean, I know people want the Big Four Classic back,
Starting point is 00:17:07 but this is exactly why they don't have it. Right. I mean, they're playing, you know, the men teams playing Alabama. They're playing Virginia Tech. They want to play in these sort of big marquee games. I love it. And I think being able to go out in Western Iowa and to get those Hawkeye fans back involved, because we know how invested that that community is.
Starting point is 00:17:26 But it's harder for them to be able to get over to Iowa City. So I know season ticket holders probably aren't the happiest group of people right now, Trent, but this makes all the sense in the world to really, again, recapture kind of I don't want to say the lost parts of the state of Iowa, but just continue to bring energy into those parts that, and again, those are as diehard of Hawkeye fans as anyone. So I love what they're doing. I think Ben has a lot of trust in what his team's going to be able to do this upcoming season.
Starting point is 00:17:51 I think that's why he's continuing to challenge them. And again, a power 14, this makes all the sense when you talk about the net rankings, obviously with what they want to do. Iowa wants to be comfortably in the NCAA tournament. This is something where they can, it's a win-win scenario for them. They lose on neutral court. Okay, it's not great, but certainly a lot better than lose into a, you know, Western Illinois, I'm sorry, Eastern Illinois at Carver Hawkeye Arena.
Starting point is 00:18:18 So I love it. And again, it just provides a little bit of an offseason juice, I think, for Iowa fans because how many times over the last, I don't know how many years, Iowa fans have been clamoring for more marquee non-conference matchups. Again, I'm not saying Virginia Tech's a world beater. This is a powerful program. This makes all the sense in the world from a column to kind of get his team ready for what the Big Ten is going to be like.
Starting point is 00:18:40 I'm very, very excited about it. Over on the women's side, there was an opportunity last week for open practice over there in Iowa City. Any takeaways from you? Anything that jumped out? I know probably the biggest thing, Danny Carnegie, not part of it as she's playing with the National 3 on 3 teams. So the biggest accusation of the offseason not there. But give us a thing or two that you saw over in Iowa City. Yeah, well, one, I think Amari White is the perfect fit.
Starting point is 00:19:04 I mean, you just kind of look at the culture. In a way, from an attitude perspective and a culture fit, it reminds me of how Lucy Olson is perfect for Iowa. Like this is just a very positive, sunshiny, kind of vibrant personality. That does well in Iowa City. I think she'll become a fan favorite soon. Two other things. There weren't a lot of bodies there, Trent. You know, there are 11 people.
Starting point is 00:19:26 Brea Medina, the D3 standout score, broke her nose on the first day of summer workout. So again, I think we can avoid the welcome. You know, what was your welcome to D1 college basketball moment? I think that's taking care of. And then Alistromdale, the late edition from Sweden, is still overseas and sweet and playing with her national team. So there were only nine people at that practice. It's really hard to kind of continue to install a lot of what the team wants to do.
Starting point is 00:19:53 But this looks like the makeup of a really good team. I mean, Ava Hyne, what she's been able to do. Layla hates us had a really good offseason, apparently. Taylor Stremlow is shooting the basketball very well. I just think, I want to say there's a renewed sense of confidence, but this is going to be a different look, Iowa team. And I know we didn't get the chance to see Danny Carnegie. I think people are going to get to know her very quickly with what she can do.
Starting point is 00:20:14 I think that there is a lot of relief on chit-chat right shoulders, knowing that she does not have to be the only playmaker. Yeah, Taylor Stremel came along late in the year and was able to take some pressure off her. But now you have two dynamic starting guards that can go out there and create the own shot. They can instigate the offense. There's not a heavy burden on true freshman McKenna Volichko, who I think is going to be a very, very, very good player for Iowa. Iowa knows they have options.
Starting point is 00:20:41 They don't need to run the offense through Volichco. She can hit an open three. She can crash the glass. She can do these putbacks. She can be a defensive weapon. I think there's a lot of buy-in on the culture front of the team, but also this new playing style. I think that the roster is a perfect fit for Jan Jensen and company.
Starting point is 00:20:59 And I'm very happy they're going away from the inside, the high, high, low post. I just, it works in a lot of ways, but if you don't have the outside shooting, the defensive cram in the paint. And I don't think they're going to be able to do that against Iowa this year. Yeah. And it just, it didn't quite marry the way that you wanted to. There are so many things you can do with the triangle that they did with the high post action. And I just didn't like enough of what they did away from the high post angles of it and the triangle part of it.
Starting point is 00:21:24 I thought there was a lot more that could have been implemented that they didn't. But when you're installing something in year, number one, that's different than something that is your system. I think it makes a tennis sense too and go into that four outlook and what you have with Hayden. We'll let you go. So a year ago, I know you guys went over. to a practice, Addie deal in that practice shot lights out and everybody, oh boy. And the hype train and ratcheted up another level. Is there a part of you that just you think she's going to be good?
Starting point is 00:21:48 You said she's going to be good. But you do also want to temper those expectations a little bit just because of what happened with deal a year ago. I think there's a couple of things. One, again, you got a good credit deal because she was lights out and those summer workouts, man. I was saying it. Everybody was saying it.
Starting point is 00:22:04 It was impressive. But again, I think when the lights came on, I do think there's a little bit. and obviously took her a little while to adjust to Big Ten competition. What I would say is this about Holichko. The expectations remain high, but there's not as much pressure on Volichko to immediately produce, given what's around her. Because remember, Ava Hayden, we thought she'd take a step forward. Ava Hyden wasn't Ava Hyen at this time last season, right?
Starting point is 00:22:33 They have Amari Whiting, who is, again, a very defensive-minded, versatile weapon, but she can hit the three. She's kind of an old school kind of three. She's great mid-range. You know, can bang in the post, finish with either hand. Iowa has two shot-creating guards at this point, proven shot-creating guards.
Starting point is 00:22:51 You have an all-conference, first team, all-S-C. You have Chit-Chat, right, who was one of the stories of the year, in my opinion, for how she was able to take a step up in her game. So where I'm getting that is there is so much more around Volichko that she doesn't have to carry the weight
Starting point is 00:23:07 of the pressure that an Addy deal had to do. Because what Addy and everybody thought she was going to do is be a double-digit score, create her own shot, three-level score, you know, it wouldn't take her long to adjust. And again, I understood the logic behind that.
Starting point is 00:23:21 I did try to temper it a little bit. What Caitlin Clark and some of these other five-star guards do in the big 10 and power conferences, Trent, people need to realize that's not normal. Like, it is not normal for five stars to go out there and do what all these other players have done. If Volitchco starts,
Starting point is 00:23:37 I think she'll start the fourth. If she can start, average seven and a half points, five to six rebounds a game, maybe a block, come up with a big bucket. That is a phenomenal year one for her as a starting four at the University of Iowa. And I think that goes on very reasonable expectations as well. Final thing for you, David. And you mentioned Caitlin and wanted to ask you just about season number three a week ago. Things got about as ugly as they have before. and just the toxic nature of this.
Starting point is 00:24:07 I know you're involved in some of the social media stuff and the things that go on. And I see some of the responses that you get. It's just for somebody that covered Caitlin for four years, got to know her and develop a relationship with her. Just seeing it, I always go back to just the joy that she played with in Iowa City. Feels like a lot of that's been sapped away. I think there's a couple of things. One, I've never seen a professional league or organization self-savit themselves more in the WMBA. I just don't think that they want to succeed or they're not serious about succeeding.
Starting point is 00:24:39 I know I'm not the only one who believes that. And surprisingly, Trent, I may come to defensive Angel Reese in this too. Because Angel Reese and Caitlin, obviously they're very different. There are certain people in demographics that latch whatever they want to, for whatever motivation, onto Caitlin. And they use Caitlin to push it. They use Angel to push it when it has nothing to do with basketball or what either one of them are about and the toxic narrative and how everything is spread despite it being shut down repeatedly by both of them it's really bad for the game it's bad just for the social construct i mean
Starting point is 00:25:16 i can't tell you how many people have told me you know i love the wmba for katelyn's first year i can't watch it i can't support it anymore and it's really unfortunate that you have whether it be katelyn i think katelyn gets the worst of it but katelyn angel page there's people that don't care about basketball using their you know the platforms of these great athletes have built to push whatever they want to for whether you agree with it disagree with it it sucks and ultimately it will be why the wmba slows its growth and i got to be honest man like i still watch katelyn play i don't miss a game because it's entertaining it's just really unfortunate how toxic this has gotten and i could not agree more about the fact that katelyn just doesn't play with that same joy i'm sure she loves the locker
Starting point is 00:25:57 room loves her teammates but it's really unfortunate that we've gone down this route and i don't say this too without a doubt The WMBA doesn't need to give special treatment to Caitlin. They need to protect her. And anybody that says that she doesn't take the brunt of punishment or she isn't guarded differently is just flat outlining themselves. And it just, again, it sucks. And I really hope that they can find a way to correct this
Starting point is 00:26:19 because I think it's a fun product of watch as a whole. I'd like to focus on the basketball side of it instead of everything else that swirls into it. Unfortunately, that is not a reality with the WMBA at this point in time. David, Ikeld, gulfi, insider.com. David, appreciate your time. We'll talk again soon. Thanks, man. I appreciate you. That's David Eichold, joining us here.
Starting point is 00:26:40 Always great to catch up with David and break things down from all the different angles. We'll come back on the other side and some wrestling news. That's right. Wrestling at the forefront of the conversation. We'll talk about a new home and home and a rivalry nude. That's next. Trent, kind of back with you one final time on the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast. Thanks for being with us and making Lockdown Hawkeyes, your first listen every day, your daily Iowa Hawkeye Podcast.
Starting point is 00:27:10 As we continue, it's time to take a look over at wrestling, something that we haven't talked about a whole lot. Of course, the decision of bringing Tom, Terry Brands back for another season as the Hawkeye head coach and his top assistant this season. We wondered it was there going to be some shuffling maybe with assistance, a little bit of movement. But overall, it's right back to the well, trying to augment that roster this season. Not a ton of boss in this offseason. And unfortunately, Penn State has kind of grabbed the mantle and gone a completely different way on that front. But one thing I did want to mention was something fun that was announced today is you and I
Starting point is 00:27:44 and Iowa are renewing their rivalry. Now, crazy to think that these two programs have not wrestled a regular season matchup in 15 years. We saw that today just absolutely head scratching. I know what it was a big deal throughout the time when Iowa would make its way to Cedar Falls and also a fun non-conference matchup that they've had in the past. But of course, you got the connection with Doug Schwab. I know a lot of people would like to see maybe Doug have a lot of. an opportunity to coach the Iowa program down the line, the job that he's done at
Starting point is 00:28:12 UNI and trying to build on a place that has limitations in terms of facilities, in terms of budget, comparison to a place like Iowa and what Doug would be able to do. But just being able to see that, having one of them at Carver, the other one at the Unidome, I think that's going to be really cool, know the great wrestling community up there in northeast Iowa and just across the state of Iowa that goes without saying. So just a fun one. And former Hawkeye going up against his team and Doug, Schwab.
Starting point is 00:28:39 I think that's going to be cool and really happy to see this one be able to come back together for both sides. Looking forward to that coming up this winter. Out of time for today, we will be back with you with a whole lot more. We on Monday went through the best case scenario. What would have to happen for Iowa to make a college football playoff? Tomorrow, we're going to go in other direction. Things go poorly.
Starting point is 00:29:00 The wheels fall off. We'll do that. We also have Tom Kaker from Hawkeye Report. He's going to be joining us later this week. A lot of Hawkeye content, your daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast. podcast. It is locked on hawkeyes. We'll talk to you again tomorrow. Go Hawks.
