Starting point is 00:00:01 Defense travels in March, and the Iowa Hawkeyes women's basketball team just proved it. Iowa locks down Illinois in the Big Ten tournament with the dominant defensive performance and reward the number two seat in the NCAA tournament. The Hawkeyes are peaking at exactly the right time. You are Locked on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day. I'm Trent Condon and this is the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast. Thanks for making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day.
Starting point is 00:00:43 We are your daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast. I've been covering the Hawkeyes for over 20 years on the radio here in the state of Iowa, including currently on the Iowa Sports Radio Network, with stations all across the state, including Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, the Quad Cities, Sioux City, and our flagship, 106.3 KX&O in Des Moines. Today's episode of Lockdown Hawkeyes is brought to you by Fandul. Vanduel is giving you a way to turn your energy into even bigger potential wins with the college basketball parley profit boost.
Starting point is 00:01:15 Head to Vandual.com today to get started. Well, today we are going to talk a little bit about the big matchup for the Iowa men as they travel to Nebraska for the finale over the weekend in Lincoln. It'll be senior day for a group of seniors over there, including little Sammy Hoyberg, rinkmas, and a few others over there in Lincoln. and obviously a charged up atmosphere in that one. What's it going to take for Iowa to pull off the victory? We'll talk about the matchup, and we saw it a year ago.
Starting point is 00:01:42 Iowa went over there and won the finale and knocked Nebraska out of the Big Ten tournament. Everybody will make it this year. We'll talk some Hawkeye Hoops on the men side. Tom Kekert's going to join us from hawkireport.com will get Tom's perspective, what he saw in Iowa City on Thursday, and also recap the news. Tom Brands coming back next season for the Iowa wrestling program. We'll do that with Tom, plus a little nugget on the quarterback battle. Is there a quarterback battle between Jeremy Hecklinski and Hank Brown as we get ready for spring football just around the corner?
Starting point is 00:02:14 But we begin with what we saw on Friday night. Iowa gets the win against Illinois and a final score that was not indicative of the way this one played out. 6458 is the final as the line I close the game on a 15-0 run, also a 17-2 run to end the ball game over the final. 422. And if you were wagering on this one, as I did, well, my fan duel account is a little bit lower because I laid the seven and a half with Iowa thought I was home free. Oh, never count those chickens before they hatch. And we definitely learned that one as Iowa gets the win, but not the cover, but we're here to talk about the game. Let's talk about first the biggest aspect and the biggest question coming into the Big Ten tournament. And that was the availability
Starting point is 00:02:58 of Hannah Stulke. After the elbow injury sustained last week, hearing Jan Jensen talk before they departed to Indianapolis, did not exactly get the warm, fuzzy feels that you were going to be able to see in a Stulke, will they going to sit around an extra day? Now, one thing that we want to put in there, and Stulke said after the game, there was nothing that was going to keep her out of it. I think the training staff would probably be the one that would be able to do that. But, you know, seeing Stulke, have those good moments again,
Starting point is 00:03:27 we talked about the importance of her playing together and what her and Ava Hayden, Ava Hayden have been able to provide here recently with that high, low action. Hayden just played in the game 18 minutes, 16 points in those 18 minutes when she was in there. She was really good. Had foul trouble, had four fouls in the game, but did have five block shots for Hayden. To me, early on, when they got off to that good start, it was a huge part of it was Taylor Cremlo. And again, we talk about her ascension. And though that dissipated a little bit as a game went on, some of those shots weren't falling like they were.
Starting point is 00:04:01 early in the game. Got a little something out of Fearbach offensively early. You get four of your five starters and double figures. The only one that doesn't get there is Taylor Stremlow, who finished was the nine. But a very balanced attack in this one, 16 from Hayden, 13 out of Hannah Stolke. You got 12 points from Chichat Wright. Good to see her three point shot falling again, two or three from behind the arc to go along with four assists in the game against just one turnover. Absolutely love to see that. Fearbach finished with 10 and then the nine from Stremble. low out of the starters. Again, much of the game at the end was not how the game actually played out.
Starting point is 00:04:39 I was in domination. And I guess if you question anything, maybe should have waited another minute before he put in the reserves. I guess that would be the only thing you can point to for Jan Jensen. You know, Jan mentioned after the last Illinois game a week ago. It was just a tricky matchup. A lot of the things that they do offensively are things you don't see often out of different squads that they faced throughout the course of the year.
Starting point is 00:05:02 It was a different type of offense. And as we also know, Illinois was red hot from behind the arc as they were not in this game. Great job out of Iowa defensively, certainly in this one, what they were able to do and cover up those three-point shooters. I want to talk about that a little bit more. A couple other things. Again, Journey Houston, this time, not in the starting lineup with Hannah Stulke back in there for the Hawkeyes. So that means Journey Houston came off the bench. And though she wasn't overly impactful, did have a three-pointer, but it was her only bucket of the night, 12 rebounds again in 25 minutes.
Starting point is 00:05:34 And Journey Houston taking a role, a role that maybe she wasn't the most comfortable with. I just think says so much about her. In fact, she was the only reserve that scored in the game. Another offer for Addy Gill, Alila Hayes played a little bit more because of the foul trouble of Hayden. She, 0 for 3 from the floor, got to see Callie Levine a little bit late in the game along with Tegan Malaney, who got out there. And you know, you understand. You're going to play. You hope three games and three. days you want to go to that bench a little bit earlier maybe than you would in a regular season game when you have at minimum a couple days in between the game so getting them out there
Starting point is 00:06:09 definitely understand that part of it and the way to play it out but just leaves a little bit of a bad taste in your mouth is now i will get ready for michigan wolverines get the win in their matchup in the big 10 tournament so we'll get a rematch of that one that we saw just a couple of weeks ago in the big 10 tournament and a lot of eyeballs going to be on that one i think this solidifies a two seed for Iowa. With the loss against Illinois, you do wonder. Now, there's other things happening around the country. Vanderbilt fell in their game at the SEC tournament.
Starting point is 00:06:38 That was another team that's on the two seed line as Michigan was in the latest reveal from the NCAA selection committee. So that is a component. Michigan wins over Oregon, 8058 was a final in that one. The other semifinal will be UCLA, no surprise, as they cruise against Washington. They'll get Ohio State. The Buckeyes, a winner. Minnesota 60-55 in that one.
Starting point is 00:07:00 So that's what we'll see. That'll be game one of the double header, followed up by Michigan and Iowa. And the Hawkeyes now got to be ready. You know, Michigan, the Hawkeyes took it to them. And what they did physically, it leads to more big picture stuff. I think even with the loss of Michigan,
Starting point is 00:07:16 they're fine. They're going to be a two seed. You obviously would like to be a two-seed that stays away from Yukon as long as possible. Yes, if you get to an elite eight, you're going to play somebody good. But I think you'd rather play even Texas or South Carolina as opposed to having to face that
Starting point is 00:07:31 Yukon team that just looks like they are on a different level. Again, this season are the Huxk season and push them off as long as possible. I think that's what we all definitely want to see. Michigan coming up, we'll have a reaction podcast after that one as well. Coming up for you sometime on Saturday after that one goes final. We got you covered on there and then get you set for Sunday on the men's side and hopefully another game for the women in the Big Ten tournament. and mentioned Stolke, remember, we got this extra week off.
Starting point is 00:07:59 You know, the way the Big Ten tournament is structured and playing it on the women's side a week earlier than the men, that sets the scene where you get a little bit extra time to heal. And I do wonder if it was close, if that was also part of the decision-making process, knowing even if you get all the way the championship game on Sunday, that you're going to have a couple of weeks before you're playing again. Basically, what, at worst, going to have 11 days before you're going to be playing again in the NCAA tournament.
Starting point is 00:08:24 So plenty of time to heal. up for Hannah Stulke and everybody else that is dealing with bumps and bruises and the whole thing. One final thing, this Iowa women's basketball team and as we've talked about them throughout the course of the season is just seeing them on the defensive end. And they locked down this Illinois team that shot lights out against them the last time out. We've seen that so much throughout the course of this season. Iowa currently is 13th in the country in defensive efficiency. So that's not just taking the odd numbers, how many points you're giving up and looking at
Starting point is 00:08:54 that because that doesn't tell the whole story. What you want to do is also put in the tempo that you're playing in, how many possessions there are in the game. And these defensive efficiency numbers, they do exactly that. I was 13th in the country after a year ago being 16th in the country. And that is certainly a higher level than we have seen before. You go back in the four previous years for Iowa going all the way back to 2020, season, Caitlin Clark's freshman year.
Starting point is 00:09:22 They were 190th in the country that year. in defensive efficiency. Improved in year number two of Clark, up to 96 that season. The final four year with the win against South Carolina, they were 59 that year. And then the final year where they lost to South Carolina in the championship, they were 42nd in the country. We're seeing market improvement on the defensive end of the floor. And when you don't have a generational player like Tate and Clark, you have to be better on that end. We've definitely seen that in these two seasons of Gian Jensen and what they've been able to do
Starting point is 00:09:53 on that end, very connected. And I think you saw that a ton, certainly for the first, say, 36 minutes of the game against Illinois. We go from the women's basketball side, over to the men's side. We'll talk with Tom Kaker from hawkeyeorport.com. Get his thoughts on the tough loss for the Hawkeyes to the Wolverines and once next against Michigan. Plus, is there really going to be a quarterback battle between Jeremy Hecklinsky and Hank
Starting point is 00:10:18 Brown? Tom fills us in with the details on that as we continue on the lockdown. Hawkeyes podcast. College basketball is nonstop. Let's get to Tom Kickert.
Starting point is 00:13:26 He joins us now as we look back and look ahead. The Sunday, Tom Trent and Ken, as always, thank you for doing this. Obviously, we'll get to the women's game tonight as they will play Illinois. Just watching TV, Tom, it's been a long time since I heard Carver Hawkeye come to life, the way that it did last night. You were in the building. You obviously could provide more color into that. It seemed loud.
Starting point is 00:13:48 The fans were engaged. It was great to see and hear, Tom. Yeah. That's been a kind of a revival of Carver Hawkeye last month or so with the Nebraska game, too, and just the feeling that people are into Iowa men's basketball again for the first time in a while, and they're showing up in their chair, and then they're involved in the game. I told a friend last night, I think they've got to learn some things about cheering, though, sometimes. because, like, they just, like, for example, when, like, Michigan would score or something that'd be a big possession, then it'd just go dead silent, you know, and I'm like, no, the team still needs you guys.
Starting point is 00:14:33 Yeah. They still need you to cheer. You might want to get back on your feet. You just, you know, so they, it's almost like they've got to relearn how to do this. And I think they'll get there, but it's, it was fun. It was a terrific basketball game. It really was. Boy, you know, just, just, yeah, thought Iowa was, I kept, I was sitting next to John Bonen camp, and when they went down 10, I was like, boy, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:15:00 Because they'd been kind of twying like five or six points down, and I was just worried it was going to get the 10, and then all of a sudden it would get to 15, and it would be over. And to their, to Iowa's credit, they fought back and, and, you know, almost pulled it out. I mean, they almost got there. It's a night where you don't want to talk about world victories, but definitely was a moral victory. You didn't feel like a great matchup going in. Michigan, outside of the turnovers, and there were plentiful, and I was defense had something to say about that.
Starting point is 00:15:32 But that was a team that you don't match up well, and you competed right to the end. Now, can you take that momentum of finally playing well after that, just awful, pitiful performance against Penn State? Can you take that momentum and go to Nebraska and give yourself a shot here? Tom, I like this match up a whole lot more for Iowa. I think they match up with this Nebraska team better. Can they do it and what's going to be a hornet's nest?
Starting point is 00:15:55 Yeah, it is going to be a hornet's nest because of the last game and just the bad feeling and the animosity that's going along with everything. And so you've got that going into it. But Nebraska just doesn't have a post game. They kind of live and die by the three ball. And they've kind of regressed to the mean a little bit. Lawrence hasn't been shooting it very well. And Price,
Starting point is 00:16:19 Price Stanford's been kind of carrying them in a lot of ways in the last couple weeks. So it's an opportunity. It's there for Iowa. But I think the question is, and Ben McCollum's going to have to get them to do it, if they play with the level of effort
Starting point is 00:16:37 that they played last night, they'll go in and beat Nebraska. I don't have any question about that. They'll beat them maybe by double digits. I mean, they just, they played so hard and so tough and they were, they were in it. But can they, that's the, that's the $64,000 question with this team is that they have, you go back to the Minnesota game, you go back to, you know, the, even some of the games that they won, like the Northwestern game.
Starting point is 00:17:07 It's just, they kind of play with their food a little bit and just, they almost played down, they almost played a level of their competition a lot. And the good team, if you want to be a really great team, you just got to go out and just pulverize people all the time. Like Michigan's done most of the year. Senior Day, obviously, over in Lincoln, so goodbye to masks is really popular. But it's Hoyberg's kid who's going to get probably the loudest here. And as you mentioned, all the stuff at the end of the basketball game, the rivalry between the two schools, the fact that Iowa got them. Boy, it seems like a steep hill, Tom, but I'll take you where the matchup isn't as daunting.
Starting point is 00:17:44 as it was last night against Michigan. Yeah, there's just, they don't have the post guys. You know, there's no Mara. By the way, Mara's thrown in that, to me, the place. It was just 17 feet out and just line drive, bank. After a travel. After he traveled. And you wonder, you know, because the game's tied right then.
Starting point is 00:18:09 And Iowa gets the ball with the chance to go ahead. outcomes could be different. It could. If that shot doesn't make it, of course, I brought that up to Dusty May after the game. And he goes, yeah, remember Howard Banks went in that kind of bounced off the front of the rim and then there's back in. And I said, you're right, Dusty. You're right. You got me there.
Starting point is 00:18:35 He seems like a good guy, Tom. I know that they won and he's probably in a better mood after the win. But does he come across his pretty genuine coach? Oh, he's great. Yeah, I've got some friends who cover Michigan, and they just rave about what a good duty is and just that he's just so easy to deal with and there's no ego. And of course, they're coming off the Joanne Howard experience, which was not good. So anything would be better than the Joanne Howard experience up there.
Starting point is 00:19:06 And Indiana, they are still kicking themselves. They could have got the alum. They chose another year of Mike Warrick. Woodson. And now you look at those two programs and what could have been for the Hoosiers, but that aside. Now, let's go the other way, Tom. You feel great about the matchup. I like the matchup too for Iowa Sunday, but it doesn't necessarily mean they're going to win. They're going to be a six, seven point underdog in the game. They fall in that one. Likely, it's either going to be Oregon with Biddle or Maryland team that just beat you a couple weeks ago. You lose that one.
Starting point is 00:19:35 How nervous are Hawkeye fans going to be come selection Sunday? I think it depends what it looks like. I think they did some good for themselves by not getting blown out. Had they gotten beaten by 20 last night? And everybody would be like, oh, boy. It's the perception is different. Because, I mean, if you're that selection committee and you're watching that game last night, you're going, okay, Michigan is one of the probably four teams that you think might have a shot at winning the national title.
Starting point is 00:20:05 And they may be at the top of the list when we get there. And you, granted, on your home floor, but you played them to a one possession game in the, you know, and played them right to the wire. So those things, I think, matter at this time of year where you just, you got to look at the, you see these games. And you go, boy, that looks like it, to me, you watch that game, you go, that looks like an NCAA tournament team. Derry say maybe a sweet 16 team if they get the right matchup, you know, they just, they played really, really well. last night. It was maybe one of their best games of the entire season. Was it Maniow's best game of the entire season? I thought he played great. Absolutely. Absolutely. But he was better. He was really, really good. He's played pretty well,
Starting point is 00:20:52 I think, in the last couple weeks. And I thought Tavion looked more like himself. I think he's been kind of banged up. You know, the guy that I'm just so kind of enamored with, just about the future is Tate Sage. I mean, you know, he does, there is no fear in that dude. He just like,
Starting point is 00:21:15 his guts of a Catholic. I mean, he goes right up into seven foot three, Mara and, and tries to, you know, guard at him. And he scored over him.
Starting point is 00:21:26 I mean, it was pretty impressive. I saw some other players who just kind of, I don't want any, anything to do with this guy. I'll just keep, keep it moving, keep the ball moving.
Starting point is 00:21:36 and I really like the way Tate Sage is playing too. He went up right till Yaxel a couple of different times. I mean, he was defending him hard, giving up what, three, four inches of height and obviously the thickness is much different between those two. I'm with you with Tate Sage, but the big question is going to be come whenever this season concludes. When it comes to a close, you know, you have to find a replacement for Bennett Sturtz. You have to find a high level replacement. Centers cost a lot in the portal, point guards cost a lot in the portal.
Starting point is 00:22:04 how well equipped is Iowa to go out there and get a top flight point guard coupled with the selling point for Ben McCollum, what he's going to sell. How confident are you that they're not going to get a point card? They'll find a point guard that they can get one of the best point guards out there. Yeah, I think one of the things that we have to look at this year is that I don't know that they're going to have the amount of resources that they had last year. So the budget's going to be a little bit different, but you've got what you paid Bennett, what you played house, what you were paying Tavion that would come off the books. So some of that will come off the books.
Starting point is 00:22:38 But I think you're going to have the resources to get good players, but you've got to, yeah, you've got to get a point guard. And I don't know who that's going to be. I don't think anybody who thinks they know would just be
Starting point is 00:22:55 guessing. So I don't know who it's going to be, but they've got to get a room protector too. And I have said these things. I mean, everybody knows you've got to get a point guard. And he said, I got to get a guy that can protect the rim a little bit because that's been an issue with all those straight line drives. They don't have anybody at the back end of the defense to do what Mara did a couple times in this game. Last night where Iowa would get a drive to the lane and he's just altering shots.
Starting point is 00:23:23 And that's got to be something that they've got to bring to the table too. I know that there was some talk earlier maybe real early in the week or maybe over the weekend about banking. and his potential to have another year. What are you hearing, if anything, there, Tom? And when will they ultimately get that decision? Asked Ben about that. Asked Tavion about it. Sometimes I wonder if Tavion is even, like, super, super interested in it.
Starting point is 00:23:49 I mean, he's such a low-key guy. It's just hard, he's hard to read sometimes about what really matters for him. But I brought up to Ben and Ben, like, they're just, they're monitoring those football cases, where Juko guys are trying to get extra time. And if they get the decisions and they're favorable, then they have something to discuss. But otherwise, I don't think they're really spending a lot of time on it, other than just monitoring those cases. They don't have their own case. They're just kind of monitoring what the other cases are telling them.
Starting point is 00:24:27 Tom, yesterday, our friend Chad Lysdekawa, the DeBoine Register reported that Tom Brands will be back for the 26, 27. and season with the wrestling program. Definitely going to be difficult coming up this week and State College as they're hosting Big Ten this week. You know, they just need another advantage on top of what they already have. That aside, though, from the Iowa perspective, a lot of grumbling. I see it on the message boards.
Starting point is 00:24:49 I go over to the cesspool. That is the wrestling board as they affectionately call themselves from time to time. I know how ugly it gets. I see the comments all the time. The decision Beth gets running back for another year. There's got to be changes, though, right? It can't just be, and we're going to try again next season. Got to do something to kind of alter the approach.
Starting point is 00:25:10 I liked Chad's analogy of 2014 Kirk Farrant having to kind of re-examine himself as a person and what he was doing and how he was operating. I think that's a fair analogy to draw. From what I was told, it sounds like the money people, you know, like with Pran last, year there is no money people behind frame and so it was an easy decision it's harder decision when your main guys in wrestling that that have supported the wrestling program are still in Tom Brands's corner been pretty firmly there right now so I think they wanted to give him another year but the other thing is that they're
Starting point is 00:25:56 going to have to find a way to build a roster too because they're losing you know Caliando and Ayala and so on and Patrick Kennedy. I mean, they're losing some of their better wrestlers and it's not like the bullpen is stocked and ready to go with the next wave of guys. So they're going to have to hit the portal,
Starting point is 00:26:17 going to have to hit some home runs there. But I think they're also kind of realistic and resigned to the fact that everybody's kind of going to continue to play for second place. Any football news? Not really. It's been pretty quiet. there. You know, I think once football gets going, we'll finally see some things. But every,
Starting point is 00:26:42 you know, the one thing that I think, um, all of us need to kind of maybe, um, rethink. I think every, the perception is this is just going to be Jeremy Hecklin's job. And everything I've heard is that it is a much closer competition and it's going to be a true, true competition in spring ball doing him and Hank Brown. It's not like Hickland's, he's kind of got this job wrapped up. It's just in this competition in name only. It's a genuine competition, and they are very close right now. Great for business.
Starting point is 00:27:13 Yes. Quarterback battles definitely matter. It is. Absolutely. And I don't know if you saw the article over at CBS, Tom Fornelly, an Illinois guy, sadly for him. He ranked the 18 quarterbacks anticipated to be starters next year, and he had Hecklinsky number 18 on the list.
Starting point is 00:27:31 Fair, Tom? Shocking. shocking. I don't know who all the coaches or all the other quarterbacks are in the Big Ten right now, but it's just shocking that somebody who's a huge Illinois fan would do that. I don't see any bias at all. That's Tom Kaker at Hawkeye Report.com. Joining us, appreciate Tom's time as always. Let's look forward to Sunday.
Starting point is 00:27:53 What's it going to take for Iowa to get another win against Nebraska and solidify themselves as an NCAA tournament team with no doubt, with no sweating, income selection Sunday. We'll talk about that. On the other side of what's at stake for the Hawkeyes, that's next. Locked on Hawkeyes. Workplace chaos, deadline stacking up, inbox overflowing, and the one position you have

That's right. The flavor draft is upon us. 18 different flavors to choose from, including new options like confetti craze, fruity rainbow, or cotton candy. There is something out there for everybody, regardless of what your tastes are. The board is set. The flavors are ready, and I got my number one pick for the five hour energy flavor draft. I'm going off the board here. You've heard some of my picks the last few days. How about this one? Peach mango. That's right.
Starting point is 00:30:02 ripe peach flavor on the first sip. Mango adds tropical depth and a little bit of sweetness, smooth, well-rounded fruit profile, slightly richer, mouthfield, and that citrus flavor. Plus, sweet, finish, love it, a balanced tropical blend. My number one pick for today, it's the peach mango, but that's not all. Oh, there's no, a lot more to it you can jump into.
Starting point is 00:30:25 Mention that cotton candy. Ooh, that one sounds sweet. Sounds pretty delicious. Maybe you're just going with the solid veteran choice. You like a cherry, a grape. Absolutely makes a whole lot of sense. You're going to get a ton of value out of those with the flavor draft. Five-hour energy shots, most importantly, give you that boost with zero sugar.
Starting point is 00:30:45 A lot of different innovations that are out there. I think that they could have a lot more fun here and dink a little bit deeper into that flavor profile and see what they can come up with five-hour energy. Find your new favorite flavor of five-hour energy shots available online, five-hourenergy. 5 hour energy.com or on Amazon. Trent, kind of back with you on the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast as we wrap things up here. On a Friday edition, Iowa will be back on the hardwood
Starting point is 00:31:17 on the women's side as they will face off against Michigan. Looking forward to that one and what should be a great Saturday of basketball. And then if they move on to the championship game against the winner of Ohio State and UCLA, 3.30 central time for the Iowa Michigan game coming up tomorrow. Let's jump into the men's side on Sunday. This will be the final regular season game in college basketball.
Starting point is 00:31:43 Now, there's obviously other games going on. There's going to be games happening also that night. There'll be conference tournaments that are happening. But the final scheduled regular season game, 4 o'clock tip off, Iowa at Nebraska. A year ago, Iowa went over to face a Nebraska team that was playing just to get into the Big Ten tournament. But also remember, they were still on the bubble at that time. to be an NCAA tournament team. They had work to do in order to get there,
Starting point is 00:32:09 but it was a realistic possibility. And that Iowa team with very little to play for, went over there and won in that building, one in that environment. And what we've seen out of this group, I mean, think back of what they did in Hilton Coliseum. Think of what Iowa did in Mackey against the boilmakers.
Starting point is 00:32:24 This team has had good moments on the road. They've had clunkers, Penn State, Maryland. Those are also crappy environments. That's not going to be the case on Sunday. They're going to be charged up. And much like Iowa getting the win the first time against the Huskers, it's going to have to be a similar type of game. You saw the defensive intensity that Iowa played with in that game against Nebraska,
Starting point is 00:32:45 what they did Thursday night against Michigan. That same kind of defense needs to travel in a big time way if I was going to get there. And we go back and look at what Iowa did in that. It was Bennett Sturts really bottling up Price-Samford and taking him out of the game. He wanted the defensive assignment. He was great. Well, I'm going to guess that there is going to be some kind of counter. that Fred Hoyberg and company comes up with.
Starting point is 00:33:08 So this is going to be that counterjap game. You're going to have to do things differently. Ben McCollum talked about after the game, just how difficult they are to prepare for in Nebraska and the difficult things that they do overall. And what they do specifically on the defensive end, they switch things differently than a lot of teams do. And I know that gave Iowa some issues.
Starting point is 00:33:28 So Iowa's got to also come out there counterpunch in a different way. Got to have Cooper Cotch make shots like he did against Penn State. You're going to need that big step up. What we saw from Tavion Banks, I thought he had a really good performance. And you need to have Manwa be able to go out there and do at a high level what we've seen out of him here recently and really playing well these last three games. You need that kind of thing. What are you going to get out of a Tate Sage? And then ride with him as they did.
Starting point is 00:33:54 It wasn't just Tate Sage what he did offensively in the game against Michigan on the defense event. I mean, he's up there going up against Lindaborg. And he was toe to toe, not back and down. Absolutely love that kind of fight. you're going to need that same kind of fight against a Nebraska team that's going to be ready. They're going to be hungry. Make some shots. Make it difficult again and be ready for the counterpunches.
Starting point is 00:34:16 That'll do it for today. We will be back with you on Saturday as we'll get you a rapid reaction podcast. Probably not as long as we went here there on this Friday evening. But we'll get something for you recapping what we see with Iowa, Michigan. And of course, after Iowa, Nebraska on the men's side, maybe after a Big Ten championship game, we will see. We got wrestling going on this weekend with the Big Tens, keeping an eye on that one out in State College. Is it going to be ugly?
Starting point is 00:34:40 How ugly it is? Maybe this team will wrestle inspired with the news that Tom Brains is coming back. We will see on that front.
