We open things up here today with a look at the numbers from Pro Football Focus,
a weekly conversation piece that we have here during the football season,
taking a look at Pro Football Focus's numbers as they grade each and every play
and every player on every play.
We use this as a jumping off point, an opportunity to see if what they're seeing
matches up with what our eyes saw
on the football field. And I think it helps paint a pretty good picture of what it was a week ago.
We're also going to be joined by Scott Dockerman of The Athletic, a look at the Iowa football team
from his perspective. He was up in Minnesota and had a good glimpse of that one. We'll talk to Doc
and a little basketball at the end as Kaitlin Clark faces elimination tomorrow on a Wednesday and potentially 2-0, 0-2 depending on your perspective in the WNBA
playoffs. But let's open things up here and start with the offensive side of the football.
Offensively, Iowa obviously got humming in the second half of the football game. The passing
game did a little bit, but it was a whole lot of Caleb Johnson.
Let's start with the most important position.
Of course, it is quarterback and Cade McNamara.
A 65 grade overall for him.
Very good on that front.
Just solid.
And, you know, we talked a little bit about some of the discrepancies,
some of the disappointments.
The numbers are just fine.
And we'll talk tomorrow a little bit more about the conversation
with the coordinators hearing from Tim Lester on the offensive side
of the football, Phil Parker defensively, and LeVar Woods.
And we'll get into that a little bit more.
But, you know, he said, Tim Lester it is,
that said that he thought it was one of Cade's best games that he has had.
So probably a different kind of perspective.
I know a lot of the fan base was ready to jump off the roof after watching that performance during the first half of the game.
There were some good things. And as we talked about yesterday for your everydayers, we went
back and watched it and it certainly looked a lot better the second time around. And those numbers
definitely paint that picture. Are there plays down the field? I think they'll get there and
we'll get into that a little bit more. Also, of course,
he had Brendan Sullivan out there as he was able to play a handful of snaps in the goal-to-go
situations. A 64.8 grade for him. Did not throw the football. A run game of 62.5 for that one.
Very solid. And if Iowa can get solid quarterback play, they're going to win a whole bunch of games.
If you're looking for more
than solid, you might be wanting to cheer for another team. Let's go to running back, another
ridiculous grade for Caleb Johnson. He grades at an 84.3, his run grade an 82.7, and I would like
to know what it would take to get like a 90. I mean, if that was only an 82.7, standards must
be pretty high over there.
Surprised by Jazzy on Patterson, who ran hard.
There were two, maybe three plays where he was an ankle tackle away
from busting off a huge run, including one that would have been like 85 yards.
But that aside, he just grinds out with a 56.7.
Really surprised by that.
Pass blocking great for both of those guys really high.
That is great to see from both of those ones. But surprised about the low grade there for Jazzy
on Patterson, who I thought he was really, really good. We mentioned this number also yesterday,
just one yard lost in the carries from those two guys and 39 combined ones. That is a big one.
Hayden Large at the fullback position is 68.8,
kind of playing that hybrid H-back role, if you will.
A 70.6 run blocking grade.
That is good to see and definitely need that.
Wide receiver, not much.
Caden Weijan, 62.2.
He is the top guy.
Caleb Brown in his one snap is second.
Jacob Gill, third.
How about this, though?
The run-blocking grade for Jacob Gill was a 52.1. My eyes didn't see the same thing there.
I saw a guy that was blocking his ass off, a guy that was out there, that was help impacting the game as a blocker, as a wide receiver. I thought he was good. I thought some of the other young
guys were good. Dayton Howard, when he came in.
Even Jared Bowie was doing some things.
We talked about TJ Washington yesterday.
Surprising.
And I think poor Grady will put it on that one
of the blocking for the wide receivers
because without those blocks, those 20, 25-yard runs,
40-yard runs from Caleb, they're not happening.
They're not happening at that level.
And you need those guys out there,
and they're doing, I thought, a really good job.
Same thing at the tight end position.
Again, not a ton in the passing game.
Addison Estrenga grades out as the top tight end
with a 61 grade, just a run blocking grade of 61.2.
I don't think that's particularly close.
Luke Lachey down at a 51.8 overall
in a 53 run blocking grade.
Just doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.
We talked yesterday on the offensive line about Cade Pieper going in there
at some of the goal line situations being an extra offense alignment.
We saw your traditional starting five out there for every snap of the football game,
but Pieper also got in there as they added an extra offense alignment, an extra layer up front on that one. Logan Jones, though, out of the football game, but Peeper also got in there as they added an extra offensive lineman,
an extra layer up front on that one.
Logan Jones, though, out of the regulars.
He was the top-rated pass-blocking grade.
Not good, a 45, but the run-blocking grade, excellent,
a 78.1 from Logan Jones.
Connor Colby up second after a great week the week previous.
Another good one for him with a 71 grade,
followed up by both Stevens, Mason, Richmond, and Jennings, Dunker.
Again, these numbers, I'm just not seeing.
I get Caleb Johnson.
And here's the thing.
We get all these low blocking grades from all of these different guys.
And yet Caleb Johnson finished, what was that number again for Caleb?
That he had the numbers, 84.3.
I mean, if you have nobody that's blocking well in your grading scale
and your running back is still only grading out at an 84.3,
difficult to wrap my mind around this one.
Boy, this exercise certainly changed my opinion just a little bit.
All right, let's jump over to the defensive side of the football
and what we see over there.
Again, these numbers from Pro Football Focus,
and we start up front with the defensive line. Aaron Graves, your top-ranked guy, 67 grade for him, good against tackle grade with
the 72. Max Llewellyn, second up. He continues to ascend. He has been a big rotational piece for
them up front. Will Huber, not a lot of snaps for him. He is third, followed up by Ethan Hercate a 63 a 63.1 for Jeremiah Pittman Brian Allen a 61.5 good
against the run and great to see that Brian Allen the question the concern maybe was he just a pass
pass rush specialist uh not the case at least in this one good run grade out of him why a black
the Minnesotan on the roster he finishes with 61, Caden Crawford and Deontay Craig down
at the bottom. The tackle number is what hurt Deontay Craig on that one. So that's what you
get up front. Again, certainly thought that defense line was better than those numbers.
Indicate didn't get to the quarterback and that's going to be a piece of it there.
Jay Higgins with a 73.5. I mean, this is just getting nuts. You watch that football game
and Jay Higgins wasn't impactful. I mean, his ability to go sideline to sideline, had the
interception early in the game, the setup and a 73. Nick Jackson, who was excellent in his own
right at 68.9. No, no. I saw a little bit of Jade Harold. He gets a 61 and Kyler Fisher with a 59.
These numbers more than anything,
I think they're upsetting me.
I wonder if they watch the same football game that I did.
Finally, at defensive back, Xavier Wampa,
your top-ranked guy with a 72.1 right behind him.
Jamari Harris, who continues to ascend.
He's at a 72.
Cohen Entringer right behind them, 71.6 for him.
Sebastian Castro, a 71.2.
All very good.
Quinn Schulte, who had the interception, he is with a 65.
And Deshaun Lee, who started in place of TJ Hall,
he is the lowest-ranked guy with a 56.8.
Good tackle grade.
The run game and the coverage not great, though, in those ones.
Bad numbers.
Bad numbers.
Pro Football Focus this week.
Whoever was doing that one, I think they need to go back and reevaluate the tape.
At least what I saw on the football field.
We continue here.
Locked on Hawkeyes.
Time to talk Hawks with Scott Dockterman from The Athletic.
We'll get into what he saw up in Minnesota.
And what's next for this Iowa football team?
Some big picture questions on the Hawkeyes as we continue with Scott Dockterman.

Let's get to scott doctorman he covers college football and the hawkeyes etc for the athletic he was in the twin cities on saturday night watching iowa come out and really stick it to him in the
second hour i thought the first drive of the second half really set the tone. Was it a strangle they hit for that long game, longish, 20 yards,
I think, to set things in motion
and really dominated in the trenches in the second half.
At least that was my takeaway, Scott Dockerman.
Good to talk to you.
We appreciate you coming on.
Did I see it the way you saw it as far as the dominance on the lines
really asserting themselves once we got to the final 30 minutes?
What I saw was the Iowa's offensive line really took over the game.
And that was throughout the whole entire third quarter.
I think they – something in the neighborhood of like 170 to 14 in yardage.
And it was primarily on the ground.
and yardage, and it was primarily on the ground.
And you saw that Iowa's offensive line, for the first time in years,
I thought really just leaned into a Big Ten opponent and battered them,
you know, in a way that they used to do with regularity, and now it's finally starting to come to fruition again.
And I thought both tackles played just outstanding football.
I mean, you know, Caleb Johnson obviously get all the accolades, you know,
co big 10 player of the week and everything.
But I think Mason Richmond and Jennings Dunker were probably the best players
on the field for Iowa's offense.
And it's been a long time coming for those positions.
You know, do something like that.
No doubt about it.
That offensive line has gone a long ways.
Caleb Johnson's an absolute stud.
The passing game still work to be done there.
What did you see from McNamara?
The one thing I mentioned to Ken earlier, downfield passing,
just it's covered up there.
I haven't seen many windows, at least of the TV copy that I was able to watch
again last night, that there's guys running free or anything like that.
What's wrong?
What's off with the passing game right now?
Oh, I think there's some of that, no question.
There's not a lot of deep passes available to them,
and I think part of that is the secondary is taken away from the receivers.
And then also they have leaned in really hard on 12 personnel.
leaned on leaned in really hard on 12 personnel that's their not only their primary that's their almost sole um package that they're going with and so you're not getting as many receivers on
the field to stretch the field of that type of endeavor and um and so what they decided to do
with Minnesota a lot of cases was do some bootlegs, have some guys that were more in the flat.
And then they did try to strike down the field.
And unfortunately for Addison Estrengo, it made a great catch that I thought was a catch, but it wasn't.
It was ruled the other way around.
You know, you lost a couple of plays that way.
But overall, if nothing else, what you've got to look at it and say they're not connecting down the field,
they're not getting a lot of yards, but they are somewhat efficient.
They're not making big mistakes, and they are completing passes.
Now, they're short passes, but they're still completing them.
And I think that's at least a step in the right direction compared to where we were a year ago.
Do they need to find a way to get Caleb Brown involved in the offense, you think?
Because he certainly got the speed to do that.
Seems like they fall in love with Vander Zee.
You had a really good game against Illinois State.
You love his size.
But is Caleb Brown a guy that needs to see the field more, do you think, Doc?
Not knowing what's going on behind the scenes, if there's something there.
But boy, oh boy, sure seems like this would be something that Brown might be able to, you know, take some pressure off that game.
If he's good enough, yeah.
I mean, we saw him in just short doses last year,
and it was kind of like we were all like dying of thirst in a desert.
He provided a couple of Dixie Cups worth of water for us because it's like,
okay, this guy at least looks like he can do something with the ball in his hands.
But he didn't play a lot before that.
And, you know, he was suspended this year.
And other players have fit the part.
I mean, I think Jacob Gill is by far their best receiver.
Yeah, I do too.
I don't think he's close.
And Jarrett Bowie filled a lot of roles and, you know,
got a lot of snaps the other day.
But, again, and Van Der Zee, you know, is experiencing – he's a true freshman.
So I think he's got a lot of talent.
And, you know, overall, I mean, they were in – I mean, I want to say only 10 plays did not consist of two tight ends.
You know, so, I mean, they were not really going too heavy with, you know, with any three wide receiver sets.
So that's pretty much what Caleb Brown was in.
Now, I think he can get more than one snap,
but I'm not so sure that he's, you know,
anything higher than the fourth best receiver on that roster.
Yeah, I think we see Ohio State beside his name where he comes from.
He must be really good.
Yeah.
With that, Doc, it is Ohio State next, but a bi-week. Um, we talked about this
throughout the course of the week, the importance of finding a way to get a victory Saturday against
Minnesota. It was a necessity. Um, the vultures were circling after the loss to Iowa state. If
you would have lost this one, losing to Minnesota for the second consecutive year, then having
14 days of people commiserating about it and just the anger that would have been there,
it would have got ugly. And you know that doc now getting this one yes it's going to be a tall task against
ohio state but what needs to be done this week in the bye week the open week here of getting ready
getting right and getting a strong push in the second half of the year yeah it's still pretty
early so i don't think that the you know the rest factor is that big of a deal yet. I do think on, on the offensive, you know, there,
there are multiple things to look at. I think on the offensive side, it's,
you know, how do they expand on the passing game?
Because you think about it,
they kind of just jumped in all in the deep end at the same time. I mean,
you know,
Kate McNair didn't practice in the spring and this
is tim lester's first year you've got a lot of new pieces jacob gill wasn't there until june
same thing with reese vanderzee who was a freshman and you know they weren't they were
going to have caleb brown and and uh for the first game so there's a lot of new there and
they still look like a not even a work progress, kind of before that, offensively.
So I think this is a good week for them to try to examine some things on their passing game to figure out what works not even well, but what works at all and kind of really take steps there.
But overall, you know, and then on defense, I think it's, you know, is there a package or something where they can get more consistent pressure
on the quarterback?
I think that's going to be important.
But I think it's really just honing in on their fundamentals.
This came so early this year that it's not really,
there's nothing that's too pressing as far as got to make sure these guys get
healthy or anything.
Everybody's dinged up a little bit, so it'll help,
but it's not as pressing as it will be later in the season.
Seems like they're fine on special teams.
Weijin's going to break one before long.
He just is.
Reece Dakin had his best game as a Hawkeye by a mile, three punts inside the 20.
Thought he was terrific.
And then Drew Stevenstock, can we remember how last year ended? And this year, I mean, the dude hasn't missed, whether it be a point after or a field goal. It's been remarkable how Drew Stevens has been able to put that behind
him and come out and basically reset and be the kicker. A lot of people thought he was going to
be special teams playing very well. It's been a plus for him.
You know, last week, of course, they gave up that punt return.
But, you know, I think that was in part because of Reese,
mostly because of Reese Dakin.
And then, you know, the coverage units kind of took the brunt of it publicly.
But, you know, he came back really strong and punted really well
and did everything he was asked to do and more.
And, you know, as you said, with Drew Stevens, you know,
kicking is such a unique situation within the sport.
I mean, it's more akin to how people perform in baseball, you know,
as far as pitching and hitting, you know, more of a skill sport
as opposed to football being more of a brute sport except for quarterback
and kicker.
So I think once he got out of his head and relied on his routine,
he's one of the better ones in the country.
So I think it's really been a good move for them,
getting him back into it.
And then as far as punt return, as long as there's just so many,
and this isn't Iowa, but just everywhere,
there's just so many, and this isn't Iowa, but just everywhere, there's just so many penalties on punts.
It's almost like I wouldn't have a problem getting rid of the play itself.
I mean, I like it, but, man, it's just every return has some sort of penalty,
and it gets old after a while.
Yes, it does, no doubt about it.
We're talking with Scott Dockerman, taking a look at the Hawkeyes.
We'll get into the Big Ten here momentarily. One more from me just about this win and moving on from it, getting the victory for the Hawkeyes.
Seeing Brendan Sullivan, you know, the piece is there. I know the question was asked last week, third and one, fourth and one.
I think Caker was the one that asked it. Is that a possibility?
Do you anticipate we're going to see even more wrinkles with the bye week here on top of it,
that we're going to see a little bit more Brett and Sullivan going forward?
Yeah, that's a good question.
I think there's certainly possible.
I mean, if you get into those situations, you know, that you might want to have him in if you know you're going to run.
But then you also tip your hand.
Now, of course, he can pass.
He's done it before. And, you can pass he's done before and you know he's
thrown a touchdown this year and uh and uh you know last year he did a nice job at northwestern
so uh but i i think that that's just another step of the evolution do they feel like that's important
for them to do on third and one fourth and one from the 40 i don't know because you when you
do that you remove kind of your your your full offense. And right now,
I think having Caleb Johnson in the backfield really changes the dynamic
rather than if you put, you know, Brennan Sullivan in,
then I think you're looking at, Oh, they're just going to sneak it.
Because if you have Caleb Johnson in your backfield,
then they've got to account for him in every situation.
Doc, let's get to the Big Ten.
I thought I'd learn more about the Big 12 and have at least an idea about that conference.
I didn't going into the weekend.
I'm still totally baffled on the Big Ten.
Illinois, I mean, what a start.
Indiana, Signetti got this team rolling.
Penn State's unbeaten.
Rutgers is on the unbeaten list.
The Ducks looked awful the first two. They got a big win. Of course, Ohio State's unbeaten Rutgers is on the unbeaten list the Ducks looked awful the first
two they got a big win of course Ohio State's Ohio State Doc um do you have to power rank the
Big Ten because that must be I mean that's a task yeah I haven't done to do that yeah we we do kind
of a weekly Big Ten look at things and and yeah yeah, it's really kind of like warm jello right now.
You just don't know how it's going to hold.
And because we have all those teams, you know,
Indiana looks amazing thus far, but they really haven't played anybody.
Illinois has two ranked wins over Kansas and Nebraska, you know,
but we don't really know how good those teams are.
And I think Illinois is coming along nicely.
And so there's just a lot of questions out there.
And everybody expected the beginning of the year to be Ohio State and Oregon.
And they still look to me like they have the most potential to be the best teams.
You know, I thought Michigan might have been left for dead last week.
And they come back, they barely throw throw the ball and they still beat USC.
What is USC? I don't know. What is Iowa?
We don't know. Nebraska, is this just a speed
bump for them or a pothole and then they get back on track?
We've got a long season to try to figure all this out.
I guess that's the great part of it, that week after week after week,
we're going to get new opinions and see new results.
And I guess I'm looking forward to that.
That's Scott Dockerman from The Athletic joining us here.
Great conversation, as always, with Doc.
Appreciate his time.
We continue here, Locked On Hawkeyes.

Back with you one final time on the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast. That's FanDuel.com. things and and with the elimination of uh the bye week going on this week a little bit more time in fact later in the week Hawkeye fans we got you covered we're going to tackle a few other subjects
we're going to talk about the men's and women's basketball team we'll probably talk a little bit
more Caitlin we'll talk about what's happening on the wrestling mat coming up this season so we'll
do some other things here in the bye week gives us a chance to spread our wings out a little bit
more because it's been all football all the time but don't don't worry we still got a lot of football content also coming
your way but for caitlin after the performance in game one you know they're hanging around middle
of the second quarter it's a tight game and then connecticut does what they've done a lot to indiana
this year and the physicality that they can play with the multiple defenders that connecticut has
look there weren't any great matchups if you're not one of the top teams in the wmba And the physicality that they can play with, the multiple defenders that Connecticut has.
Look, there weren't any great matchups.
If you're not one of the top teams in the WNBA,
those top teams are behemoths.
From the Liberty, to the Aces, to the Lynx,
and even this Connecticut team.
They are all incredibly difficult and really good teams.
And I think we'll see that play out ultimately here. But there's just this small inkling,
when we talked about FanDuel,
that feeling that you have that after a 4-17 performance
in her first ever playoff game, do you anticipate two duds in a row?
I don't.
Like, it's going to be tough.
The way that they defend her, the physical play that they bring to her,
that's going to be difficult to overcome.
We've seen that happen a lot against Connecticut this year.
But I think we've all seen enough Kaitlyn Clark.
And in a spot like this,
we don't anticipate she's going to be a wilting flower.
She's going to be ready to go.
And she's, I believe, going to have a good one coming up on Wednesday night
as they look to force a Game 3.
And how about this crazy thing?
So the first two games are in Connecticut.
Game three, the deciding game, goes back to Indiana.
Now you've got to win a game to force that game.
But for the lower seed to get this, this is something that will ultimately change.
Now as we saw the numbers from Sunday against NFL, both windows of the NFL.
The game started 2 o'clock Central time.
So you're going up against the late part of the early window and the beginning of the late window of the NFL. The game started two o'clock central time. So you're going up against the late part of the early window and the beginning
of the late window of the NFL.
Still 1.8 million viewers.
Her game alone.
And it is really her game alone.
Outdrew the three other playoff games combined.
Yeah.
Caitlin Clark effect.
It is real.
I think you'll see a good one.
ESPN has a call Wednesday night, 630 for that one.
