Jan Jensen hits an absolute home run in the transfer portal with the commitment of Danny Carnegie.
One of the top prospects changes the perspective of our expectations for Ibo Women's Hoop going into next year.
You are Locked on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day.
Hey, welcome in. I'm Trent Condon, and this is the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast.
A busy transfer portal window continues here on the basketball front.
We're going to begin things here today on that front.
We got a lot to get into, including Iowa, missing on a quarterback recruit that many people
believed was going to be a Hawkeye lock.
Not the case.
We'll talk about that a little bit later on.
Tom Kekert from hawkireport.com is going to join us.
We'll get Tom's perspective on everything happening for spring football and also look at that
transfer portal breakdown.
Some of the candidates that Iowa is chasing both on the men's and the win.
women's side. But we begin today with women's basketball as Jan Jensen after a difficult start to the
off season. Of course, losing a number of players to the transfer portal at the top of the list for many
people at a deal. The McDonald's All-American Freshman Guard after her campaign was all freshman team
this season. But I think overall, certainly not the year that a lot of people anticipated. We were
going to see from her. She enters the transfer portal. You also had some players deeper down on the
bench enter. And it's something that we're not used to. We haven't seen a ton, certainly in this
environment for Iowa women's basketball, leading, losing, excuse me, the sheer volume and numbers of
players that they did. So there's work to be done. And though it's not over, Iowa starts things off
with maybe the top of their candidates in the transfer portal and getting a commitment over the
weekend from Danny Carnegie. A guard out of Georgia began her career at Georgia Tech. In fact, two
seasons go her and chit-chat right were part of the team from Georgia Tech as they were both
freshmen on that squad and both played a lot of minutes. She makes her visit here and you know,
you look through some of the portal rankings that are out there. Danny Carnegie was a five star.
She was a player top five in some of the recruiting lists that are out there and obviously a dynamic
player. I average 18 points per game this past season as a sophomore at Georgia. And this isn't a
mid-major player. You know, this isn't somebody coming in from the Ohio.
Valley Conference are coming in from the Patriot League.
This is a player that was playing in the SEC.
Many people believe the deepest conference in women's college basketball and what you see
year after year after year.
And she was a first teamer, a first team player this season after after averaging 18 points
per game, 5.2 rebounds also can help out in that department and 3.2 assists per game.
This was the kind of player that they absolutely needed.
This was the type of player that was.
a must, I believe, going into next season. We know the returns to the players that are coming back
this season. And what you have, obviously, starting in the middle with Ava Hayden. You've got a preseason
All-American, a player that can play an incredibly high level. You're going to be in really good shape there,
starting things off with the center like that. Chit-chat right, talked about her. She's going to be back
this year after averaging 12.5 points per game, three rebounds, four and a half assists per contest.
You bring back Taylor Stremlow. We saw big growth out of Taylor throughout the
course of the season and what she did in the back half of the year after the injury to Taylor
McCabe and the way that her game certainly grew. You're feeling great about that. You got
Jordan Houston coming back this season who played maybe a little bit out of position this year.
She was the backup at the power forward spot and maybe she is more of a small forward type,
but thought she showed a lot of good skill set. The mid-range game was really good. She can stop,
step out and knock down a three-pointer and probably will be asked to do that more this season.
just love the way that she came in. She competed tough, tenacious, a really good rebounder for her size.
Journey Houston, definitely the arrow pointing up for her. Laila Hazel come back as a backup center.
And then you throw into the mix, McKenna Willitschko, who will come in another five star from the high school ranks,
the top 10 player nationally in the recruiting services. And with Wollichko, you talk about her size,
six foot two athleticism, definitely has that in a big time way. And if you saw her at the showcase over the weekend,
see that athleticism really shows up.
Back to Carnegie, though.
And when you look at the makeup of this roster,
yeah, Chichat can beat people off the dribble.
A tremendous three-point shooter we saw this year,
but she was good off the bounce as well.
Quick, you can get in.
Now I have 5'4, a little bit more difficult for her
to finish amongst the trees at that size.
But they need somebody else that can do that.
You know, that's not really Taylor Stremlow's game.
She can run the point.
She can do some different things,
but she's not somebody that you consider off-the-bounce
a tremendous player in terms of quickness.
and the ability to get into the paint.
That's what you get with Carnegie.
She absolutely can do that.
Quickness, size, really good around the rim.
Pull-up games pretty good as well.
A decent three-point shooter on top of it,
but you need more ball handlers and you need more athleticism,
I thought, in the back court,
and they're definitely going to get that with Danny Carnegie.
Now, the work is not done for Jan Jensen.
There is still a lot that needs to be done for them
just because of the sheer volume.
I mean, you go through and he look at the roster now,
but still at six players.
Chit-chat, Carnegie now, Stremlow, Journey Houston, Wollichgo, Hayden, and Hayes.
That's not even enough to practice with, unless you're practicing three on three.
So you're going to need a whole lot more there to make this something that comes to fruition all coming together.
A couple of players that have been on visits.
We talked about Kenzie Hare out of Iowa State who visited early, still taking other visits.
We'll see on that front from Oklahoma State.
Amari Whiting, who has a background coach's kid.
mom was the coach at
BYU a couple years back. That's where she
began her career, played this season at
Oklahoma State. Just a good, solid
dependable player. Not going to be
a high volume score by any means, but
can chip in, get you 8 to 12
points a game, something in that range. Pretty
good defender on top of it, like that part
of Whiting. Regan McCowan
is also going to be making a visit, Western
Illinois target coming in,
mentioned the Ohio Valley earlier. She
is a player, though, that was dynamic at
that level, big step up in competition.
and there'll be more names.
And that's going to be the tricky part now for Jan Jensen,
is finding those players that are going to be willing to come in this season
in a backup role, even in a role where you're not going to be able to play a ton.
And that is something that I'm sure is a difficult sell.
Everybody wants to play.
Everybody wants to have opportunities.
But when you're filling out the roster, look, you've got to be also honest with these kids.
You have to be honest about the way that this is going to look for them going forward.
And I think after we get through this and getting what had to be somebody,
at the top of their list with Danny Carnegie.
You're off to a great start, but still a lot to be done for Jan Jensen.
Tom Kaker from hawkeyeorport.com is going to join us coming up next.
Now, talk with Tom on Friday during my radio show.
So some of this information is going to be a little bit aged,
but a lot of good nuggets in there, I think, is really going to help you guys out
and get a perspective of what's going on in the portal.
We'll talk about some of the men's candidates,
and we'll get into that a little bit more later on as well.
But I think this also is going to show you just how quickly things can change in the portal.
And you don't want to lose sleep over what is happening minute to minute, moment to moment,
because it just changes ever so closely.
We'll talk about that, plus a lot of spring football talk coming up with Tom Kaker from hawkerreport.com.
That's next on the Lockheye's podcast.

Now here's Tom Kakert from hawkeyeerport.com.
Again, this is from Friday.
So some of the information has evolved a little bit
in the transfer portal as it does,
but a lot of good information from Tom,
including some good stuff from spring football.
Let's talk to Tom Kekert, hawkyeerport.com,
part of the On3 Media Enterprise.
Hello, Tom.
Trent and Ken, how are you?
Doing well, guys.
The portal is active.
Indeed.
Let's start.
I do want to save some time for football as the media was allowed, what, 30 minutes yesterday?
I think, Tom, you guys were, yeah, that was great.
Good for them.
They should do that periodically.
Let's get to the portal.
Let's get to Fulgaris.
By all accounts, mutual decision based from both Iowa and Fulgaris.
Do you see it that way, Tom?
Yeah, I do.
I think it was, I know people are surprised.
maybe today to see it, but I mean, this thing's been rumored for a week.
He was going to head for greener pastures,
a green maybe being the operative word.
But, you know, if you were reading some of the stuff that a lot of us were producing
on the NCAA path, it was pretty apparent that,
that Ben McCollum and Alvaro Forgerst did not really see the world the same way when it comes to basketball sometimes.
And it was probably not a great situation for them.
So I asked Alvaro one day, I said, how would you term your relationship with Ben McCollum?
And would you call it interesting?
He goes, that's a good word, interesting.
It's like, okay.
Yeah.
So anyway, he's moving on.
I'm sure he'll get a nice payday.
I don't know that it will equal up with what he had rumored to God from Iowa,
but I'm sure he's going to get something very nice.
And hope he does well.
He's an enjoyable guy to cover.
I made a huge shot.
Yes, he did and played really well in three games.
Yep, with the exception.
Not so much the four.
He was worth every penny thanks to that shot.
Without a doubt.
Yeah, totally agree.
Getting them to the sweet six.
getting them to an elite eight.
He was, we do good Al, we also knew bad Al.
And I think that's maybe the sticking point here.
You know, that inconsistency, but.
By the way, did you coin that because that was really good throughout the year?
Good Al and bad out.
I know.
Remember we had Bobby Hanson on.
He laughed when you asked me about that.
We definitely saw both angles of that one.
But that now means that Iowa has more muddy freed up to go out there and do some work in the transfer portal.
So let's go that direction.
A lot of names that are out there looking for a center, looking for a lead guard.
Those are the two positions.
What is the latest on that front?
Any visits set up?
Any interviews, anything like that?
What's happening for Iowa, getting players now in from the portal?
Well, like every school right now, they're doing a lot of Zoom, is what I'm.
They're just like touching base with people.
And I've heard this from various different people that, like, trying to nail down some of these visits is like trying to nail jello to a wall.
It's just like it's impossible.
to kind of get kids to, you know, commit to coming on visits.
And it's just, it's a really weird situation that they have because it's just like,
it's not like you're going to visit with them in their homes.
You're doing these zooms.
And it's, and then you're trying to get them on campus and trying to get them to commit.
And it's, it's, uh, and meanwhile, the agent is probably talking to the coach about how much money
they can get.
And that's determining whether they're going to, um,
visit and then you've got people complaining about, well, they're not getting enough, you know, money.
It's getting lied to about how much money these kids are really worth.
And it is, uh, it's not great.
But yeah, they're looking for a center and a point card.
Andrew McKeever is one of the guys.
I know they've been after guy from St. Mary's big seven three kid.
They want to get a seven footer who can, who can kind of rebound.
And he's got three years of eligibility, Tom?
I think he's got two.
Two, okay.
It's two.
Okay.
The fruit kid from Louisville, I know they've been in touch with him, and he's a good
block shot guy.
He's 23 from Germany.
Yeah, they've, I think the guard thing is really kind of interesting because there's a lot
of names that are getting floated around out there.
And, you know, one of them is Kay Ann Evans, the kid from North Carolina, who's at Colorado
State.
and I know the Minnesota people feel like he's going there,
and I know that about a week ago,
Iowa felt really good about potentially getting him,
if and when he went in the portaling, he eventually did.
So we'll see what happens with him.
I don't know.
They're picking phone calls with one of my favorite names
that I didn't know until last night, Ace Glass.
Yeah, that's a point card, right?
that's that's nil screaming at you
any glass companies in the greater cedar rapids iowa city area
there's your guy right there what's his story tom
he's a he's a younger guy so he's i think first year at washington state
and um really good good season they were playing in the bCC so it's not
pack 12 Washington state but the bCC and he had a really nice year
entered the portal and um you know he's garnered some interest
Iowa's been in touch.
So we'll see if anything comes to that.
Brett Decker,
a kid from Liberty,
they've been in touch with.
So it's all over the place.
And I know they're hoping to get some things firmed up for guys to come in early next week.
That's all I've been able to gather so far.
Let's jump over to the women's side of things.
Three visits set up this week,
including an absolute monster,
top 10 player in the portal,
as they're going to get a visit on that front from the Georgia transfer, Danny Carnegie, I believe is the name, played with Chit Chat right at Georgia Tech two years ago.
A all-SCC first teamer, average 18 points per game, somebody that's incredibly good off the bounce.
You talk about a great elixir.
It could shoot a little bit from the outside.
They need that against top-level talent, somebody that can beat players off the dribble and definitely feels like that's the kind of one.
So we're feeling good about this one and two other visitors this weekend too, right?
Well, it's down to one now because the girl from Linwood, Ellie Bruegerman, has canceled her visit now.
And she is likely headed to Oklahoma State, where she is, you know, she's from Oklahoma.
So I think that's, that would have been a good one, though, because she shot 44% from behind the arcs.
But Kearngi would be a really good one.
Also, one other note for her is that her lead recruiter to Georgia Tech was Lassana Barrett.
who's on the Iowa staff now.
So it's got that.
They've got the chit-chat factor.
So I think they feel like they've got a pretty decent chance at getting her to come north.
And that would be a big deal because they could plug her in the back court with chit-chat.
And I think that would be a pretty dynamic back court to go with what they have up front.
And so we'll see.
Kenzie Hare, does that make sense for Iowa?
It does.
It does.
Also, there's a Reagan McCown who's from Western Illinois who's going to set up a visit to Iowa.
So they've got, they've got some options.
They need to get probably three guards, honestly.
They've probably got to get three guards because of just what they lost with, you know, Kylie Levin and then Kelly Levin and Eddie Deal.
So I think they want to try and get three guards, maybe get.
a four, if they can, who can kind of maybe split some time with Journey Houston there.
So that's kind of the latest with Jan.
But, yeah, they've got a couple coming in here in the next few days.
We heard the reports, and I believe, was it NACOS that had it over at On 3, Iowa,
in that range about $10 million for the men's side?
Yes.
Are there any of those estimates out there for women's basketball because I haven't seen them?
I have not seen any, and I really couldn't tell you what they have.
for a range.
I know they're getting some of the house money,
but I don't know how much.
And I know they've got access to some other money
from NIL stuff, the traditional NIL.
But just when you think maybe things will calm down
a little bit with some of the stuff,
especially on the men's side,
it's like things have skyrocketed,
Especially for the higher-end guys, you know, the Florida Bedonga from Kansas getting $5 million.
Crazy.
No.
It's not healthy or sustainable for the sport.
It's just not.
The system is so broken right now.
No doubt.
Did you see either one of you, Wisconsin, apparently the state of Wisconsin is going to kick in north of 14 million a year towards NIL?
Did I read that right, Tom?
I saw something about that, but I didn't dive into it yet to see what the whole story was.
If it was to kind of maybe it's kind of to offset that the 20.5 or 21 point that they're that they keep having to spend every year.
I think maybe that's where they're doing stuff right now.
Yeah, kind of the thought process behind it is how much money is brought into the state because of that and what's brought in football games and basketball games and the economic impact that specifically.
Badger Sports brings.
Well, all right, we're going to give a kickback there.
Don't think that's going to be happening at our state anytime soon.
Tom, football, you were there at practice, bright and early in the morning.
Dennis was taking pictures for you as well.
Really enjoyed that also and getting a look at some of the guys.
And, you know, top of the fold, it's quarterback.
And Hank Brown was the first one taking snap.
So that leads to freak out factors on message boards at Hawkeye Report.
Oh, you would think, huh?
It does.
And it was just, and it's because they are literally flipping this every day from what I've been told.
Like one day it's, it's Atkinsky.
The next day it's Hank Brown.
They're trying to be fair and equal and giving them both the same amount of time.
Like when they went to another drill, Heklinsky was the first one out there.
So it's just, you know, but it was while they're doing a walk through and Hank was the first one out there.
So let's make a big deal about it because I think the fans have made up their mind who they want.
Yeah, I think so.
quarterback. Yep, absolutely. I think they've, without, without much evidence or without seeing a whole
lot, they just decided. And I think that that third down pass is going to live in. Without a doubt,
yep, without a doubt. What could have been, right? If he completes that pass and they score
touchdown, Brown is probably the bell of the ball. The anointed one, no question. Yeah, it's just
how quickly we can judge on, on things. But it's, you know, somebody suggested to me this, and I think
you guys will get a kick out of this, that Hank Brown is probably the guy that Kirk
Farrantz would prefer and Tim Lester would prefer, hecklinsky.
Yeah, it's awesome.
And we know exactly why.
Yeah.
You know, Hank is probably the less risky when you're talking about the other guy.
He's a gun slinger.
Yep.
He's a gun slinger.
L.J. Phillips.
He's the guy that caught my attention to Ferrence's press conference when he brought him
up to running back.
In a position that seems to have some depth there, sounds like they got a lot.
little more depth there with Phillips. Is that,
is that might be the case?
Hey, we got a Norm Granger comparison at the press conference.
It just made me so happy because any time he can roll one back to the 80s and,
you know, that's, that's Kirk's Wheelhouse.
So, yeah, he's, I saw him carry a couple times.
And, boy, he's quick.
He's low center of gravity guy.
Runs really hard.
So I'm interested to see him some more.
Yeah, they've got some different little weapons.
And Banderzee looks great.
Diaz looks really good.
We saw Jared Bowie out there.
I forgot he was on the team, Tom.
Honest to God, I forgot he was on the team.
Well, he hadn't played in a year.
Right, yeah.
It was easy to forget about him.
And he was out there catching some passes and looking pretty good.
So, yeah, he's got some weapons now.
Now, if they can get the pass game moving.
We'll see if they can do that, then if we've got an interesting offense this year.
That would be fun to see.
Now, the question, and I think the biggest question, is that defensive tackle.
And when Bryce Hathorne had, what, a boot on, a injury of something?
No, he was a knee thing.
He had a big sleeve on his knee.
Big sleeve on the knee.
Okay.
Any more about that?
And secondly, it's thin.
I mean, you've got two walk-ons right now that were out there with the first.
team reps, according to your report yesterday, Tom. That's scary.
Yeah. And they had Gaffney and Hubert were out there. And that was the starters.
And the Bryce, Steveson kid that they brought in from Holy Cross, boy, he's sought off.
It's a short guy. He's not very big. He's just not very big. And the kid from North Dakota was in
there too. And he's not very big. You know, I keep waiting for Devin Kennedy. He looks the part.
but he hasn't really emerged.
So, yeah, they've got to find some answers at P. Tackle because Calvin Bell's going to have
his work cut out.
I'll let him see if they can develop something there.
But, boy, it's a, it is a little frightening.
Now, I like the end position a little bit that, you know, up in EFSA, he looks like he's ready
to go.
Kenny Merriweather looks like he's ready to go.
Drew Campbell was out there.
It's one of the backup ends.
So I think they've got enough guys at end.
But that tackle position is a mega concern right now.
Tom, when will you get another opportunity to watch?
Is the last opportunity will that come up at that open practice?
Is there another one?
Yeah.
Yeah, 25th is one.
We'll get another look at practice.
Other than that, we're just going to talk to some players again next week.
And I think the, and then the week of the final spring practice, we'll get the coordinators.
Oh, good.
We'll get to talk to Tim Lester and Phil and Chris Polici.
Good stuff. Tom Kaker at Hockkeye Report.com, part of On3 Media, all the transfer portals,
comings and goings, et cetera, at Hawkeye Report.
Tom, thank you, pal.
We'll talk to you in a week's time.
Thanks, Tom Kekert.
Okay, thanks, guys.
Yep, see you. Tom Kekert, hawkireport.com.

Appreciate his time.

And Turbo and Tax Time, yes, it is here.
It's tax time, but for a lot of us, the old way of doing taxes is a lot.
Trying to book an appointment that's not the most convenient, sitting in a waiting room with a stack
of papers, emailing back and forth and wondering if they really get your situation.
But this year, you're getting a major upgrade.
Intuit TurboTax now has in-person locations nationwide.
You can meet face-to-face with a real tax expert, and your documents get uploaded
straight to your TurboTax app on the spot.
Just like that, you're done.
Your TurboTax expert works to get you every dollar you deserve while you get real-time
notifications as you go on about your day.
It's a relief of walking in and meeting a real person.
and walking out knowing your taxes are being handled right.

So a legacy recruit, Jake Nehrod makes his commitment to Kentucky over the weekend.
committing to Will Stein, the new Kentucky head coach, was formerly the offensive coordinator at Oregon.
Obviously, plenty of success there.
It does come as a blow.
A lot of the industry leaders had said early on here a couple of months back that Iowa was the leading candidate.
His dad was a former Hawkeye football player.
He had that connection.
And it goes a ride.
But as we've learned throughout the years, this is not always a huge deal.
Go back to a year ago, Iowa had the commitment from Cash Herrera.
He opened his commitment back up.
and ultimately Iowa was able to get the services of trading Bessinger,
and a lot of people believe maybe even a better quarterback prospect.
On top of it, in this new era of the transfer portal,
I can't get overly disappointed.
Certainly a guy that you'd love to have,
he was ranked as one of the top quarterbacks in the country,
and when you have a legacy guy on top of that,
a place that Iowa's not always swimming in those kind of waters,
yeah, it can lead to some frustration here.
But in this environment, the new era of college football,
young quarterback, the development time attacks,
and the likelihood that that guy, even by the time,
that they're going to have an opportunity to be playing,
you know, by sophomore, junior year, something like that,
that they're going to be sticking around very difficult at times to just imagine that.
I was doing overall pretty good in the recruiting rankings here in the early goings
of the class of 2027.
But this is a blow.
They've already gone out there.
In fact, this came out last week.
And maybe this should have been something that led us to believe that Jake Nellrop was
going a different direction.
as that was Iowa offered another quarterback in the class of 2007.
That is Braden Chantamanez.
And he is a young man from Tennessee.
Again, when they're going, kind of down the list a little bit further.
I think we can connect some dots here and see that maybe the writing was on the ball.
Regardless, though, it's about the quarterback play this year.
And what they're going to get, obviously, who's going to win the quarterback job?
Is it going to be Hank Brown?
Is it going to be the youngster, the gun slimmer slinger, Jeremy Hecklinsky, the smaller guy.
It's going to be a fun spring to watch and we'll get that opportunity, as Tom mentioned,
coming up here, April 25th in our last glimpse at the Iowa football team.
We'll continue breaking it down here daily on Lockdown Hawkeyes.
