Starting point is 00:00:00 Kickoff times are coming for Hawkeye football this week, and that means we're going to speculate what are going to be the times, including a night game for SciHawk. It might be coming. You are Locked-on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Hey, welcome in. I'm Trent Condon, and this is the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast.
Starting point is 00:00:31 Thanks for making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day. Well, we got a big interview coming your way tomorrow. Ben McCollum, the Hawkeye head coach is going to be joining us. If you have any thoughts, questions, send them along to us as we will get ready for that one and talk a little bit about the point guard recruiting coming up later on in the show today. Tom Cakard also going to join us from hawkireport.com, fresh off a trip down to Kansas City, watch some basketball. Speaking of those point guard prospects, so big names that Iowa is involved with with Coach McCollum squad. But we begin today's conversation with a look at Iowa football coming up this season. And we're going to speculate a little bit. What are going to be the kickoff times for the games across the 12 scheduled games this season?
Starting point is 00:01:13 Now, on Wednesday, we are going to find out at least the non-conference schedule, what those three games are going to entail when the kickoff times are going to be. So we're going to have an educated, educated guess here about those games. We also might find out what the kickoff time is for homecoming. That seems to come out most years. We also get that one. And we'll take a deeper look at all the games this year and see if we can come up with some of them. And if we can nail how this is going to look.
Starting point is 00:01:39 Now, we open up the season for the Hawkeyes this year against Northern Illinois. And when you look at the week one of the Big Ten slate, you got two games on Thursday, two games on Friday. And that leaves the remaining games on Saturday. Well, there's not a great candidate for Big Noon kickoff. Obviously, pick number one in almost every week goes to Fox. And they use that noon window, 11 o'clock for us here in the central time zone. Well, the two best games probably of the weekend on Saturday from the Big Ten can't be there. Boise State at Oregon.
Starting point is 00:02:08 They're not going to put that at a 9 o'clock Pacific start time. The other one, Washington State at Washington. So a lot of speculation potentially. This could be Western Michigan at Michigan. That could be the game. I do believe that Iowa is going to have an 11 o'clock kickoff. Maybe another big noon game could be Indiana, the defending national champions against North Texas. Just not a great slate overall.
Starting point is 00:02:28 Sunday, Wisconsin plays Notre Dame in green. Green Bay. That one is an NBC kickoff for that one at 630 central time. I think Iowa, Northern Illinois, we're going to put this one, 11 a.m. FS1 against the Huskies to kick off the season. Now, this is where it gets fun. We go to week two of the slate, and this is, of course, where the Seahawk game is. And when you look at this week of games in the Big Ten, another one that doesn't exactly shout out that's going to be anything incredible, anything ridiculous, anything outstanding for the Big Ten. And there's been a lot of speculation out there that this is going to be a night game.
Starting point is 00:03:04 Now, we remember some of the past night kickoffs and it can get a little bit crazy, definitely. That has been something that we've seen throughout the years. I think we're going to get the same thing here. We're putting this one down. 630 NBC big noon game likely is going to be Oklahoma at Michigan. In fact, that one's already been announced. Also, ABC has a Big Ten game with Ohio State going to Texas, falls under the SEC purview for that one.
Starting point is 00:03:27 I think we're going to get a night kickoff, 630 for Seahawk under the lights at Kinnick Stadium. The final non-conference game of the slate against you and I, I put that one 230 against you and I. 230 kickoff, BTN for the television on that one. You kind of look around, you look at the slate, you look at some of the other games. I think that makes a whole lot of sense of the way that kind of fits into the schedule that week. We see obviously BTN has done that a bunch throughout the year. So that's where we're going to go with week three.
Starting point is 00:03:55 Now we get into the Big Ten slate. And this is a time where we're really speculating because likely we are not going to find out many of these kickoff times until we get to it. The week four of the college football slate, you have Oregon at USC, a huge Big Ten game. However, again, not going to be a big noon kickoff for that one. A Friday night game with Northwestern at Indiana. You cross that one off, that one's going to be on Fox. I have a sneaking suspicion. A lot of people are talking about Iowa, Michigan, maybe being the Big Noon game for a
Starting point is 00:04:25 Fox, I think they're going to go a different direction. Notre Dame goes to Purdue that week, and not very often that Fox gets an opportunity to broadcast in Notre Dame game. I think they're going to jump aboard with that. Even with Purdue, not expected to do much this year, I think that's the direction that they're going to go. That leaves Iowa, Michigan, going to be a 230 kickoff for that one on CBS. That's where I have it slated for the Hawkeyes. We move next to week five, and that is the Buckeyes coming to town to take on. on Iowa that I have down as the big noon kickoff. We'll get all the pomp and circumstance, all the exes.
Starting point is 00:05:02 Now, we would all love some more tailgating time. We would love to be a little extra charged up with Ohio State coming to town. I don't think that's going to be the case. I have this down 11 a.m. kickoff in Kinnick Stadium for the matchup. The following week, the short week as Iowa travels out to Washington in week six to take on the Huskies. We already know that is going to be a Friday night game. 8 o'clock kickoff central time. It'll be broadcast on either Fox or FS1.
Starting point is 00:05:25 So that is one that we already have locked in, and we know that's what it's going to look like. After that, then, Iowa has a by week before they return on October 24th. It is week eight of the college football schedule. Iowa goes to Minnesota that week. In that one, I have a down 230 BTN. A couple of big games happening that weekend. Indiana goes to Michigan. That'll be likely a big noon kickoff for that one.
Starting point is 00:05:49 Oregon goes to Illinois. I think potentially you might see that game, either a 230 CPS game or even the NBC game. USC also goes to Wisconsin. That might fall under that one too. So we're going to put it 230 with the battle for Floyd of Rosdale, 230 BTN for Iowa, Minnesota. Up next, it is Halloween. That is right. Saturday falls, Halloween falls out of Saturday this year and Wisconsin comes to town. Another one, you love a night kickoff. I mean, how great would that be under the lights? Looking through the Big Ten slate, though, I don't think that's going to happen. Washington goes to Nebraska that week could be a big matchup.
Starting point is 00:06:27 You also have a couple of others, including Ohio State at USC. That thing feels like it might be under the lights. Unfortunately, I put this down as a 11 a.m. kickoff, Iowa, Wisconsin, 11 o'clock on FS1 for the matchup against the Badgers. We flipped the calendar to November, week 10 of the slate as Iowa will go to Northwestern. The new stadium will be there. Will that lead to prime time? I don't think so. back to 11 o'clock again.
Starting point is 00:06:56 230, actually, I put down for this one. BTN 230 at Northwestern for the matchup against Northwestern. From there, we got three more to go. We go back to 11 o'clock again with Purdue coming to town, BTN. Yeah, you're kind of feeling that one. How about this, though? Second to last week of the year, Iowa goes to Illinois. Other big games that week, Indiana, at Washington.
Starting point is 00:07:17 Oregon goes to Michigan State, but that's on a Friday. Saturday, Ohio State at Nebraska, UCLA at Michigan. Decent matchups there overall. I have this one, 230 CBS, Illinois hosting Iowa in the penulte week of the regular season. We wrap things up with week 13. As we know, Iowa will play on Black Friday once again against Nebraska. And he looked through the rest of the slate of the FBS and the games that are currently scheduled at this point in time. And you see there's just not a whole lot there on Black Friday that already hasn't even been scheduled.
Starting point is 00:07:52 In fact, when you go through and you look at the different. different games that have already been set up for week 13 on Black Friday. You have the Egg Bowl, Ole Miss hosting Mississippi State, 11 o'clock on ABC. You have Florida, Florida State, 230 ABC, West Virginia, Utah. That's an 8 o'clock game on Fox. Texas, Texas, A&M, ABC's got that one for a night kickoff. Only a couple of games left TBD. I think it's going to be right back where it was a season ago.
Starting point is 00:08:19 CBS with 11 o'clock kickoff leading into the NFL game. That'll be on prime this year. Still, I think we're going to be right back where we are once again with Iowa, Nebraska, 11 a.m. on Black Friday. So those are our educated guesses for this week. We'll find out more about that coming up on Wednesday when we'll get a release from the Big Ten offices and the TV partners and what these games are going to look at. And hopefully we can start to play in a little bit more for the upcoming football season.
Starting point is 00:08:47 Coming back on the other side, Tom Kaker from hawkye report.com. He joins us. A lot of Hawkeye talk as we continue. stay right there. This is Locked on Hawkeyes. Ruggia Performance Medicine for men. Trent kind of back with you once again here on the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast, your daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast. Thanks for being with us and making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day.
Starting point is 00:10:10 Well, every Friday, talk to Tom Kakert on the radio from hawkeye report.com. I was out dealing with my injured shoulder and getting the cortisone shot in there. But my partner, Ken Miller, had an opportunity to talk. And here is Tom Kakert joining Ken talking a lot of Hawkeyes here as we bring it to you. Locked on Hawkeyes. Here is Tom Caker. Let's talk Hawks. Tom Caker joins us every Friday. For most Friday, sometimes we have to move a little bit. But for the most part, Tom, good to talk to you again. How are you?
Starting point is 00:10:40 Doing well. Just passing through Des Moines on my way down to Kansas City to watch some Nike basketball. Welcome to the capital city, Tom Caker. Well, you've been putting on some miles on the car following these kind of basketball events, huh? Yeah, a little bit. You know, it was over in Indiana last week and now down to Kansas City for a bit and just got to hit the different circuits. Unfortunately, they don't put them all on the same circuit. You know, you got all these shoe circuits that have players. And so I need to see them.
Starting point is 00:11:16 So I'm going to get to see all of them and that I can make my assessment. Well, I know if you're not back before so, you will be back on November 15th because Creighton and I were going to play downtown the more. I think it's, I love these games, Tom, I do. It's great that they're coming over to the Capitol City. Obviously, there's a big fan base here in Central Iowa. I think it's going to sell out. I think it's going to be a good game. I really do.
Starting point is 00:11:41 Oh, I think, no doubt it's going to sell out between the Iowa fans and how excited they're going to be about this basketball team after what they accomplished last year. And Creighton fans are going to show up too. You know, they've got a really, really strong fan base. So, yeah, I think it's going to be a fun, fun day or fun evening, wherever the game is played. I'm not sure what time it will be played,
Starting point is 00:12:04 but right after the day before is Purdue and Iowa. Awesome. That should be a layup. Well, we'll see. You know, speaking of Big Ten foes football-wise, Tom Fernelli, he's not a guy that I don't think just put stuff out there for clicks. I think he puts some thought behind what he's about. And it's that type of time of year.
Starting point is 00:12:26 time of year, rather, I get it, the best rivalries. It's, what do we call it, Mount Rushmore season for a lot of these shows to come up with their Mount Rushmore. Did you see the top 10, his Big Ten football rivalry rankings for Nellies that came out earlier this week? Did you see it? I have not seen it, no. Iowa is actually named, and there's 10 of them. It starts, obviously, the Michigan, Ohio State's a lab. Number two is Minnesota, Wisconsin.
Starting point is 00:12:52 Iowa actually comes in at number three, number seven, And number nine when it comes to the biggest rivalries in the Big Ten. Number three is Minnesota. Number seven is Wisconsin. And number nine is Nebraska. I think this just illuminates because Trent says this all the time. It depends where you grew up in the state, right, as to what you think the rivalry is. I think that's spot on.
Starting point is 00:13:15 I do too because I think if you live in the far western part of the state of Iowa, Nebraska is a clear number one. Yep. If you live in the northern portion in the central part of Iowa, I think Minnesota's number, clear number one. And if you live in that northeast corridor around Dubu, Clinton, all that area, Waterloo, probably going to be Wisconsin. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:40 And you live over in my area, my neck of the woods, Illinois. Illinois, right. Didn't make the list. I wish it did. I love, well, obviously the basketball, Illinois, Iowa basketball, goes without saying it was so damn good. You know, I talked about this earlier in the show, and it's been on top of these come up a couple of times going back over the last couple of years. What the hell has happened to Wisconsin?
Starting point is 00:14:02 Tom, they used to be year after year after year. This was going to be a tough out in football. They were going to do some damage in the Big Ten. What has happened over there? Is part of it just, you know, I think, well, I think the mistake they made was fickle coming in and trying to fit square pegs into round holes and trying to retool that offense, make it quote unquote modern, you know, it's a cautionary tale for all the people who've wanted parents to change the offense
Starting point is 00:14:34 over years because, you know, they sustained it through Bilema, Jerry Anderson, Paul Chris, you know, and here's the other thing. Barry Alvarez was around that program until Fickle got there. And then it was, he's gone. And maybe that, you know, the Godfather kind of mentality that Barry had is just maybe that let it slip away. But I think the spin was just trying to go to this, you know, passing offense, throwing the ball over the place. And it just never took. And now they've had some injuries at quarterback.
Starting point is 00:15:16 And I'll acknowledge that completely. But it just has not taken. Now, this is do or die for fickle. Has to be. Got to be. I think his seats as hot as there is in college football. Yeah, I think so, too. And they've got that huge game, right, you know, right out of the shoot, basically, against Notre Dame up at Lambo.
Starting point is 00:15:36 And if Notre Dame goes up there and beat some 30 to 10, Luke Fickle make it past Sunday night? I don't know. That's a great point. Now, the rest of their schedule, I mean, their Big Ten schedule, Tom, they play Penn State. They don't have an Ohio state. They don't have a Michigan. They do have, I mean, obviously I was on there, Michigan State, UCLA, Rutgers, Maryland police, Minnesota,
Starting point is 00:16:01 and that's obviously a rivalry game, and it's a huge game in Purdue. I mean, if he doesn't have a, I mean, that smells like, even if it's a bad team, you've got to stumble your way to seven wins, don't you with that? I would think so, and the rest of their non-cons, not challenging either. Western Illinois, Eastern Michigan. Yeah. That's two FCSP.
Starting point is 00:16:24 Right. Loading up on the FCS. But I guess you're biting off Notre Dame, too. True. That does. Give them credit. Yeah. And I think Notre Dame's a legitimate threat to win at all.
Starting point is 00:16:39 I really do. I think so, too. I think so, too. They may be one of my future bets, I think, when which comes to shove this year. I haven't done any yet, but I think that's going to be one of my futures as Notre Dame national title. Just they are, they seem poised to do it. I know they lost Jeremiah. I love.
Starting point is 00:16:58 Both running backs. Yeah. Yeah. And yeah, on price. I think C.J. Carr is really good. I do, too. I think we may be in late November, Notre Dame national title, C.J. Carr, Isman, trophy. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:13 Wouldn't be a bit surprised. I know the next time we have a holiday. National holiday, this Memorial Day weekend, but then the next one, July 4th, that's the weekend that you come up with your fearless forecast. I do. I don't know how you're going to do it this year, Tom. When I look at this Iowa roster, there's just so many questions on both sides of the ball, right? Yeah, so many questions. And just 10 seniors.
Starting point is 00:17:40 And not many of them are starters or expected to be starters. So it is a lot that's up in the air with this team this year. It's just, it's so unknown. You know, it's not, you know, I was talking to somebody about Iowa State this week, and I said, yeah, they've got somebody in the notes. And I said, so does Iowa. You know, they just, Iowa State's got a whole new coaching staff and everything, and you haven't seen the product on the field.
Starting point is 00:18:10 And you kind of, you know, I always come back to, I just kind of always just trust the. Parker will get this defense right. But boy, oh boy, there's just, it's Zach Lutmer and Zach Lutmer. Phil Parker's challenge, Tom. I think this is as big of a challenge as Phil Parker's had since when to put this to mold this defense into his style and to squeeze every single bit of talent out of this group.
Starting point is 00:18:40 This has got to be as tough a challenge as he's had in a long time. I think so too because it's not like, you know, some of those other teams. I go back to the one I compare it to is that one year was after the Claiborne, Daniels, Byns, Ballard group kind of left Carl Kluge in there, all those guys. And they were left one year and I think it was like 2013 and or 2014, one of those two years maybe. And it was with, you know, and like Tom Nardo. and Joe Gaglio and guys that just had been in the program forever, but just never played.
Starting point is 00:19:20 And it just felt like a gap there that they just, and that's, you know, you start turning the page and go on to Drew Ott and some of these other younger players. These young guys are going to have to grow up really, really fast. I think that sure, especially on the defensive line. Yep, no question. I saw Athlon had them. I think number 25 in their top 25, we'll see them materializing.
Starting point is 00:19:44 Tom, if we do expand the 24, and I'm doing this as a fan, right? I root for both schools. I want nothing more at some point before I cash in my chips to see a playoff game in December at Kinnick and a playoff game in December at Jack Price. Have you allowed yourself to maybe not dream, but you just kind of speculate as to what that would be like to have a college football playoff. Say under the lights at Kinnick Stadium and Desciter. My
Starting point is 00:20:14 God. Crazy. Just think about that. Or just somewhere. You know, Iowa at Notre Dame. Yeah. And a college football playoff game. You know, like Indiana played at Notre Dame. Yeah, two years ago. Years ago. On a Friday night. Yeah. Well, you know what even
Starting point is 00:20:30 got me thinking about it more was like Petiti was talking this week out in out in that plush resort. How about that? Because they have no money and they're just trying to, you know, collect nickel cans or something. I don't know that pay for things, I guess, with the big tent. But he said something about, I release something or something.
Starting point is 00:20:55 I don't know exactly what it. He said, the 12 years since the Plath, Iowa would have been in the Plath six times. It's crazy. That's not unbelievable. That's why you say I don't have a problem. I don't either. I don't either. Who's against more football?
Starting point is 00:21:12 Exactly. I'll never understand it. And the fact that we're in the second week of November and we got teams that look as though they're both going to be eight and four, they're going to be on the precipices playoff, or maybe they're playing for seating, maybe one of them's get a home game. Oh, I think it's going to be spectacular, Tom. I really do. Great.
Starting point is 00:21:32 I just don't understand all the putting, you know, if we're mad about the NCAA tournament expanding and I'm like, who's, who's, who's, who's? against more football and more basketball. You know, it's... The tournament's still going to start at 1115 on Thursday, right? The Tuesday and Wednesday are teams that are not going to be playing around, but it's content. You can bet on it.
Starting point is 00:21:54 You can watch it. Whatever city's hosting it is going to fill up to at least some of the hotel rooms. And I just... Don't you have to think that Vegas is going to be one of those locations? I do. Yeah. It's just such a natural place to, to put that one of the, you know, you can stay in Dayton and have half of it, Dayton,
Starting point is 00:22:14 and then put the other half and put the other half of Vegas. Yeah. It's the perfect place. Although I did like the Albuquerque, you thought, too. I thought that was pretty much. I'd rather be Vegas of the two. Yes. Have you talked to any coaches who are wishing that the spring signing period,
Starting point is 00:22:33 like now that we're at the end of spring ball, like in Iowa State. They were, they found a running back at Tulane. but if it would have reopened. Do you think there's coaches that are now wishing that, you know, man, maybe we jump the gun on this. Maybe we should have another signing period. Are you hearing any of that, Tom? Yeah, I think there's some of them that would like that.
Starting point is 00:22:53 But I also think there's some of them that are going, you know what, it's good that I don't have to babysit my players either. Yeah, that's true. They don't. There's some of that too, where it's like the headaches or the headaches bigger than the benefits. Sometimes, yeah. But if you had some bad injuries in the spring, boy, you're just, you're stuck.
Starting point is 00:23:15 You know, you're going to be rattling down at the bottom of the dumpster looking for players in the portal. Or advertising on campus. Like I remember, that's where they found Iowa State kicker Brett Culberson one year. And he kicked all the, what did he, the Seahawk game that was 1513. I think he was responsible for all of them. Taggy. It is.
Starting point is 00:23:39 Taggy, yes. Peggy Coperton. He went to say he went to your school locally here at Lincoln, and somehow, I don't know how they found it, but they were grateful that they did. So when you're traveling around watching all this hoops, have you found anything that would lead you to believe that there's a pretty good chance this player is going to be a hawk guy
Starting point is 00:23:59 or he's going to get an opportunity, at least be a hawk guy? What have you heard, Tom? Yeah, that's a great question. And the thing that I've come to the conclusion to, and I'll probably come fully to the conclusion, but the thing I'm leaning towards is they're involved with about five really high-end point cards that are top 50 players, and I think they're going to get one of them. I just don't know which one is going to be.
Starting point is 00:24:24 But the tell for me is always your actions always speak louder than your words. And last weekend, Ben McCombs spent the whole weekend. in Memphis at the Nike event where Jackson Davis and T.J. Jamison and also Cape Dirty. And so I think those are their three top wish list guys. That's my guess. Because he spent that entire time. It wasn't like he was in Memphis for 24 hours and then went up to tough bend and watch the Adidas event or there were two other point cards. So I think that's the tell is that their priorities are on those three guys. Yeah, certainly seems like it.
Starting point is 00:25:13 Hey, away from college, but she went to Iowa, obviously. What do you think Indiana is doing with Caitlin Clark? Do you think this time next year that Caitlin is a member of the fever? Is she gone elsewhere due to her being a free agent and her ability to sign elsewhere? Are they blowing their opportunity with her? Maybe. I haven't paid as close of attention to it. I just saw the thing yesterday about her sitting out.
Starting point is 00:25:41 Suddenly kind of just was on the entry report. That's kind of odd. And she's kind of, it's something weird because last year she was hurt, basically the whole year. Yep. This year, bad back. Is it training staff? I don't know what.
Starting point is 00:26:01 what's going on there? If they tried to put too much weight on her, get her stronger. I don't know. It's very weird, though, isn't it? But she just hasn't been healthy the last two years now. Yeah, we shall see. Last thing for you, Jack Campbell got paid. What a player, obviously, what a player at Iowa.
Starting point is 00:26:18 Love the fact that he was running down on special teams when he was a hawk on the punt coverage team. And has obviously, it was all pro last year, not pro ball, all pro linebacker, Jack Campbell. Good for him is right. Good for him, although not good for my Chicago Bears because they're going to face it twice a year. But Jack's one of the all-time good people. We call them Captain Jack for a reason. You know, it was just one of the most humble leaders and just such a good guy. And so many good stories I've heard just off the field about Jack and the difference makes people's lives.
Starting point is 00:26:59 I care for others. So happy for Jack and happy for his family. Absolutely. I like to hear those good guys and when it pays off as it obviously has for them. Tom, drive safe. Thanks for doing this. Enjoy your trip through Des Moines down to KC.
Starting point is 00:27:12 And we will talk to you next Friday. Thank you, Tom Kaker. Enjoy Memorial Day weekend. Thanks, man. Thanks, Kenny. There he was. Tom Kekert, Hawkeye Report.com. As always, thanks to Tom for his time
Starting point is 00:27:24 as he joins us each and every week over on my radio show. You can hear myself and Ken Miller each weekday from noon to two on the Iowa Sports Radio Network with stations in Des Moines, 106.3 KX&O, along with Sioux City, Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, and the Quad Cities. Coming back on the other side, a little hoop talk. Ben McCollum's going to join us tomorrow. Some quick hits, including point guard recruiting going well. That's next, Lockdown Hawkeyes. Trent, kind of back with you one final time, wrapping things up on an abbreviated edition of Lockdown Hawkeyes as we get ready for the big interview tomorrow. Ben McCollum will be joining us. Excited to talk with Coach. A lot of things. going on. I'm going to talk about the non-conference scheduling. What's the latest on that front?
Starting point is 00:28:08 How they put those things together. I always like to talk schedules with Coach McCollum. He is very much like me. If you've been listening to me throughout the years, you know, my thoughts on scheduling and the importance of that. We'll get into that point guard recruiting. He's not going to be able to name individual names, but Kane Dottree definitely at the top of the wish list. It feels like for Iowa, Michigan, Miami, a couple of the other schools involved. Kentucky is recently offered, but feels like Iowa's in really good shape with a top 20 player nationally, one of the top point guards in the country for the class of 2027. If you got any thoughts, we'll be recording the interview coming up on Tuesday morning.
Starting point is 00:28:41 But if you have anything, hit me up on Twitter at Trent Con, any questions that you might have because things feel like they're going well. Coming off that elite eight appearance, obviously, the recruiting, the lightblood of the program, going to be some good stuff there for Coach McCollum. Again, hit me up at Trent Conn. If you have any questions for Coach McCollum, and we'll see if we can pass them along. We'll talk to again tomorrow, and we will be joined by Ben McCollum. Looking forward to that.
Starting point is 00:29:03 Until then, go Hawks.
