Yes, the Big Ten has released its schedule. We will get into that. We got basketball rapid reaction after Iowa upends Iowa State. A comeback
Starting point is 00:01:18 victory against the Cyclones in women's basketball, and we'll preview the men's matchup coming up on Thursday evening. So a lot to get into. We got the portal open. A lot happening there. Hank Brown is going to be making his way to campus on Thursday, and apparently he will be at Carver Hawkeye Arena for the matchup against Iowa State. Hey, let's sell this thing out. What do you say? Still tickets available. I'm going to be there. In fact, I'm going to be there all throughout the day. Going to make my way after I get the kids dropped off at school Thursday morning. Going to dart over to Iowa City.
Starting point is 00:01:49 I'll be doing my radio show from the Jethro's in Coralville there, right there on the strip. Less than a mile away from Carver Hawkeye Arena. So, if you're looking for lunch, I'm on the air from noon until 2. I'm going to be there at Jethro's. And then meeting up with some friends, getting ready for the matchup. And I get a little liquid courage and getting loud inside Carver Hawkeye because need it that's going to be a really good one we'll get into that a little bit later but again new to two with my radio show Miller and Cotton on the Iowa Sports Radio Network you can catch it
Starting point is 00:02:16 on our flagship 106.3 KXNO with an Iowa City on 800 KXIC Cedaredar Rapids, Quad Cities, and Sioux City. You can find us on all the iHeart stations across the state. All right, let's get into the football schedule. 2025. Now, we knew the opponents that were on the schedule for this year. And with it being a year that Iowa has the road game set up with Iowa State, that means that the Big Ten schedule sets up where you get the five home games this season and the four that are on the road. So that's the way that it's set up. And we knew the non-conference schedule was going to be Albany. Now this was originally scheduled to be
Starting point is 00:02:56 Florida Atlantic. This was supposed to be the matchup that Iowa was going to face. Not happening. That game got moved to 2030, which is incredibly odd. But that aside, not a whole lot of time. So it'll be the Great Danes making their way in for the home opener on August 30th. That is the road trip to Iowa State in week two as the Hawkeyes will take on the Cyclones. Look to continue the long winning streak inside of Jack Trice Stadium. We know the last couple of times in Kinnick have not gone very well. And then they'll wrap up the non-conference schedule against UMass. I don't think Marcus Camby is making his way back.
Starting point is 00:03:31 If he would, I don't know. He's much of a football player. UMass in week three. Then Big Ten goes. And this is how it sets up. And in fact, I always got an opportunity here to actually get off to a pretty good start. They go to Rutgers. Now, Greg Sciano has got Rutgers back to respectability.
Starting point is 00:03:47 They got them back to the program that he has been able to deliver before. They play a physical brand of football, but it's certainly not an unwinnable game against Rutgers for your Big Ten opener. Then after that, it's Indiana. Now, in the past, you say, well, that's an automatic win. You got the Hoosiers coming to town. You put that one in the win column, but we see Indiana in the past, you say, well, that's an automatic win. You got the Hoosiers coming to town. You can put that one in the win column. But we see Indiana in the college football playoff this year.
Starting point is 00:04:09 We'll see the sustainability of the Hoosiers this season. Going to be looking for a new quarterback. A lot of those James Madison guys exhausted their eligibility. They're going to be back in the portal. But also, as we found out, Indiana got some funds that they've been using in the NIL front and certainly helped the season that they were able to put together this season. So that's how things open up at Rutgers, Indiana in the Big Ten play. And then Iowa will get one of their two buys this season,
Starting point is 00:04:36 idle weeks this year. First week in October, the Hawkeyes will be off. No game there. If you're looking to maybe plan a weekend getaway, that would be a good one to put on the books. Get that one there. Make maybe that special someone in your life happy that weekend because, well, we know what football means come the weekend.
Starting point is 00:04:53 After the bye week, Iowa back on the road again. They go to Wisconsin. Now, Wisconsin, who you want to talk about a schedule? The Badgers got handed an absolutely murder's row once again this season, and this is a game right in the middle of that. Look at this slate that we're going to see for Wisconsin. Week three, they go to Alabama, home for Maryland, bye week, at Michigan, Iowa, Ohio State, at Oregon. Woo, Bucky. Good luck. After the road trip to Camp Randall, I was back home. In fact, they're back home for their next three games starting October 18th against Penn State.
Starting point is 00:05:34 They follow that up with a matchup with the Gophers coming to town and the battle for Floyd of Rosedale. Another bye week before a November date with the number one team right now in the country, the Oregon Ducks. Oregon comes in in November. Not too bad. There's a road trip out to USC. Now we know Iowa and the West Coast. You can put that down probably as an automatic loss, regardless of what USC has as we found out with UCLA this year, what we found out with Arizona and Arizona State in the past, and what we've seen outside of a holiday bowl
Starting point is 00:06:07 every time Iowa goes out there. It doesn't go very well. Then they wrap up the schedule back at home against Michigan State, and then the road trip to Nebraska on Black Friday to cap off the 12-gamer. On the surface, knowing what we know about this Iowa football team, it's really going to be a battle for bowl eligibility. I think that's a realistic spot to start next season.
Starting point is 00:06:31 This does not appear to be a team on paper right now that is going to be competing for a Big Ten championship, a college football playoff berth. That's not realistic with this squad losing 23 starters and the unknown of what's going to happen in the transfer portal. It's a difficult schedule and this is what we've talked about leading into this year. You got handed as good of a schedule as you're probably going to have in the foreseeable future. In fact, you look kind of at the future of Iowa and you go forward. So that's 2025, 2026. We know the opponents that they're going to be facing that year. You go on the road to Michigan, Minnesota, Northwestern, and Washington, along with home games against Nebraska,
Starting point is 00:07:12 Ohio State, Wisconsin, and Purdue. Oh, also another road trip to Illinois is in there in 2026. 2027, this is what the Iowa football schedule looks like. You got road games at Indiana, Nebraska, Oregon, and Wisconsin, along with USC, UCLA, Minnesota, Michigan, and Maryland coming to town. Yeah, it's a whole lot different. Oh, Big Ten West, where have you gone? It's not here anymore. Iowa has work to do in the portal. Hank Brown is going to be visiting the quarterback transfer from Auburn. Registered freshman. Started a couple of games this year. Went well against New
Starting point is 00:07:50 Mexico. Didn't go so well against Arkansas. We know, yes, an SEC opponent. I talked to a few people, though, involved that know Hank Brown. I knew him both as a high school player and watching him this season at Auburn. Still a lot of good things to say about him. He's got the arm talent and he's start right there. And as we've said before, the Tim Lester setting this thing up, I think it gives you hope. It should give you hope that if he can find his guy, that this thing can be offensively in the passing game, opened up in a big time way. It was another disaster in the passing game this year. You need more talent at wide receiver. You need tight ends to be healthy throughout the course of the year,
Starting point is 00:08:31 something that I would didn't happen this season, but I think there's a chance. I really do. And this isn't just being a homer. I think anybody that's listened to me for a while knows that is not the way that I treat things. Do at times I try to take an optimistic view? Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:08:45 You talk to yourself five times a week, talking Hawkeyes for the whole time. Every once in a while, you want to go in the positive spin. If there's things to be negative about, we'll absolutely go there. One thing we don't have an opportunity to be negative about is the wind, excuse me, tonight from the Iowa women's basketball team. We'll get into that. Iowa gets the win against Iowa State, down by eight points, then come roaring back, dominate the fourth quarter as the Hawkeyes add another one.
Starting point is 00:09:12 Now nine of the last ten. It's been a long time since Iowa's lost a game to Iowa State inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena. No Caitlin Clark, no problem. Iowa gets the win over a preseason top ten Iowa State team. Impressive one. We'll talk about the game. We'll talk about a little big picture conversation with Iowa women's basketball. Plus, we'll preview the men's game as well.

Trent Conant back with you once again on the Locked On Hawkeyes podcast. Thanks for making Locked On Hawkeyes your first listen every day. All right, quick pause here. All right, we're ready to go. Just had a little swig. As we're battling through here after a late night,
Starting point is 00:10:55 watching Iowa get the win against Iowa State. By the way, speaking of FanHool, Iowa, currently a six-and-a-half point underdog at home against the Cyclone men coming up here on Thursday evening. Muddy line, Iowa a little better than two to one plus 202 on the muddy line. Cyclones land minus 250 on the muddy line and the total 159 and a half. We'll get into that game a little bit more, but let's take a look back at what we saw here at Carver Hawkeye Arena. And for a while, it felt like it was just going to be one of those nights that it wasn't
Starting point is 00:11:26 happening for Iowa. Iowa State jumped out to an early lead. It was 12 to 2. But it was a whole lot of Lucy Olsen. And the Villanova transfer has been absolutely incredible. There is nobody that can replace Kaitlyn Clark. There just isn't. Because not only was she a great basketball player,
Starting point is 00:11:50 but she was a transcendent star. There were so many angles to Caitlin Clark's game that brought the casuals in. And not just casuals. People that didn't like sports or don't like basketball were coming in to watch Caitlin Clark. My radio partner, Ken Miller, wouldn't watch a women's basketball game if his life depended on it before Caitlin Clark. My wife is not a big basketball fan. She loves her football. Basketball, not her forte. She loved watching Caitlin Clark and still watched it during the summer with the WNBA. That's what she did. She brought in casual fans, people that weren't in women's basketball, people that weren't even basketball fans.
Starting point is 00:12:23 That's what she was able to do. But you bring in Lucy Olsen from Villanova, and she has been as advertised. In fact, maybe even a little bit better than what I thought she was going to be. So we knew coming in, this was not a deep three-point shooter. That's not her game. This was not anything that was going to translate and be very similar to what it's been in the past and what we saw the four years previous with Kaitlyn Clark. It's a different style of point guard. Lucy Olsen, her strength is her pull-up game. And off a bounce, the legs kind of spindle into the side.
Starting point is 00:12:56 As much as you see her legs kind of going all over the place, though, she's so good at setting her shoulders and getting square to the bucket. And you see that continuously throughout the course of the game, getting up to the elbow, pulling up at the free throw line, pulling up at 12 feet away, and just so good. Even as her body, her lower body is turning, getting those shoulders set and getting to the rim. A really, really strong there. I was surprised in this one.
Starting point is 00:13:19 I thought that if Iowa was going to win this game, Addison O'Grady was going to have to have a big-time performance, and it didn't happen. O'Grady finishes the game just 1-5 from the floor, had one bucket. That was it in the game. Finished with four rebounds as well, had three fouls. Maybe could have had a couple of others.
Starting point is 00:13:37 You had the intentional foul. How do you call that, intentional foul? Look, anybody that has been following women's basketball for a long time knows this, or if you're a newbie, we all understand. Officiating women's basketball is brutal. It's just, it's really bad. And it's part of the game that you just have to, you just have to understand going into it.
Starting point is 00:13:58 There's going to be nights you get bad whistles. There's going to be nights you get good whistles. There are going to be nights where there are inexplicable calls. It's just the reality of the situation. It's bad. And there were bad moments, certainly on both sides. In fact, I think Iowa maybe even got a better whistle than they did. And there were so many missed calls.
Starting point is 00:14:14 That aside, not a great game inside for O'Grady. And Audie Crooks got hers. Now she had 27 in the first three quarters and finishes with 31, but both those buckets came as it was academic at the end. Iowa just found a way, and they did it with defense, and that's what's fun about this squad. They're built differently, obviously with no Caitlin. It's not going to be the high-flying team that's putting up 95 points against a bunch of opponents in the Big Ten. That's not how they're going to win games, and there's going to be the high-flying team that's putting up 95 points against a bunch of opponents in the Big Ten. That's not how they're going to win games.
Starting point is 00:14:50 And there's going to be certain opponents that they're not going to be able to out-athlete. But there is a concerted effort on the defensive end of the floor that at times we haven't seen. And not just in the four years previous, but really in the Lisa Bluter regime. Defense was never their calling card. And this team has get stops against good teams. And that's exciting when you look at what they could possibly be. Are they going to win a national championship? No. Are they going to get to a Final Four again? Probably not. Are they even going to get to a Sweet 16? It's still going to be a stretch for them to get there. This is a tournament team,
Starting point is 00:15:23 and this is going to be a good win. The Big 12 women's basketball is not what it once was. I think Iowa State's going to be right up there contending for a regular season title. This is going to be a victory that's going to go a long way. And in a night where you struggle shooting, you miss your first nine three-pointers of the game, you're down eight points, and for a while felt like it just, as I mentioned, it wasn't going to happen to battle back to persevere i think says a lot about this squad says a lot about what they are and what they're going to be throughout the course of this season so an exciting one i talked about lucy olson obviously at the top got to mention a couple other players um what a shout out hannah stulkey
Starting point is 00:16:00 now hannah wasn't able to get many shots uh just four buckets in the game. Goes to the free throw line, hits five of eight from the charity stripe. But what you saw from Hannah Stolke when she was tasked with guarding Audie Crux, who was just such a difficult matchup. And you see it when she gets deep, when she gets you pinned, nothing you can do. She's so good at angles. She's so good at creating space. She understands the game at an incredibly high level. And Hannah Stolke giving up a bunch of size. She was able to make it difficult. Forced to turnover late in the game on the travel.
Starting point is 00:16:37 And tipping balls away. Just using her speed and her athleticism to really frustrate what she was doing there on the defensive end. And there were a couple of moments when things were getting tight. She just took the ball and went. And that's what you need. You need that aggressiveness. Hannah Stolke is an upperclassman now. Now as a junior, it's time. We know the talent's there. Talent's never been a question with Hannah Stolke. The size and athleticism that she has is through the roof. In a game where he only shoot four times, she was incredibly impactful in the game. Really, maybe the biggest part of the comeback was a three-pointer down by eight by Sidney Fulter.
Starting point is 00:17:14 Got a couple of buckets in the lane, stepping through. And for the first time this year, it felt like, at least as close to it, we got the Sidney Fulter back that we saw last season. A player that I absolutely grew to love watching her on the hardwood and what she was able to do. Hits three three-pointers in the game. Finishes overall with 16 points in just so many moments. She's a Bulldog. She's got that Southside Chicago mentality.
Starting point is 00:17:43 She's the kind of player you need. And coming off the surgery, it felt like we finally saw, let's say, the real Sydney Fulter in this one tonight. Afeer Bak also had a three. That was incredibly important in the game. Liked what she was able to do. Pushed it a couple of times, too. It got out and pushed the pace.
Starting point is 00:18:00 And that's what you wanted to do against this Iowa State team and not getting them deep. So what other angle we got to talk about? Are these freshmen? This freshman class, they're going to be so good. And Ava Hyden, she got that black shot and she's talking a little trash. I love that, right? Coming in there as an 18-year-old, just talking some junk, right? right? Coming in there as an 18-year-old, just talking some junk, right? Having that was great to see. How about Guyton? Three-pointer, just ice water in the veins, not caring about the moment. Carver's loud. Carver's fired up. They're coming back.
Starting point is 00:18:45 It's still a tight game. It just lets it fly. It's both of her shots in the night. Two three-pointers. That last one, just a huge, huge momentum. And she's still working her way back. Remember, she just stepped on the hardwood in a regular season basketball game for the first time in over a year. And she's already looking confident. You can see there's going to be some slow moments because coming off an ACL injury, that's going to happen.
Starting point is 00:19:06 But incredibly excited about her future and what she's going to be. And then Taylor Stremlow. Talk about talking junk. I mean, these ladies, they do not lack for confidence and absolutely love that. Made a big play defensively, got a big rebound, hit a couple of buckets herself. Stremlow's going to be good, And Mullaney's going to be good.
Starting point is 00:19:26 And I mentioned Hyden. This group of four, that's exciting for the future of this women's basketball team. And one final note. As Iowa's got a big-time matchup, they'll go to Michigan State. Should be a really good one coming up this weekend. Seeing Jan Jensen. And seeing Jan now in this new element going from the nice assistant the one that he needed a shoulder to cry on or he needed to pep up Jan Jensen was going to be that
Starting point is 00:19:55 and to now see her in this role and see her working the officials seeing her up on the sideline seeing her just excol the the whole arena to get up and get a stop as they're making that comeback. I just feel great for her. If you've ever met Jan Jensen, she's an incredible person. She's one of the kindest, nicest people that you're going to find. She's good people. And to see her having early success like this, it's great to see. It really is. And just loved seeing her
Starting point is 00:20:30 and the shots that we got in that one. And this is one, this is a matchup that's important. And Iowa now has taken hold of this series. Iowa has been the better part, better half of this series now for a while. And it's not just the final Four runs the last couple of years and playing for a national championship the last two seasons.
Starting point is 00:20:51 Iowa's women's basketball felt like for a while they'd hit their plateau, and then they were able to exceed it. And to do it against Iowa State, I know for this coaching staff, I know for this program, is incredibly important. The Seahawks men's basketball game, maybe it's lost a little bit of steam. I mean, that's the reason it's not sold out. Gets the Cyclones on the men's side. I mean, it was a sellout tonight.
Starting point is 00:21:16 But this is something with the recruiting, the types of women that they go after on the recruiting trail. There's been some bad blood. There's been some negativity. There's been some things said that has certainly, in the past, rubbed the coaching staff at Iowa wrong. Didn't like the way maybe things were said. And so to get that win, to Jan get it, her first time out against Iowa State,
Starting point is 00:21:46 that was a big one, a really big one. Remember, Iowa State, preseason top 10. Now they haven't lived up to that. They already lost to UNI, got embarrassed by South Carolina. South Carolina's going to embarrass a lot of teams this year. And now they take their third loss here. Iowa bouncing back after the loss against Tennessee. That was great to see. Just a fun one. In Carver and to hear the crowd fired up and to see another sold out crowd
Starting point is 00:22:11 for women's basketball. Look, I was there. I was there in the late 90s. I was there at the end of the Angie Lee era and into the beginning of the Blue Era when the curtains were up and not many people were showing up and to see what this is built into it's been really really fun iowa goes on the road next they make their way to michigan state that will be an 11 a.m tip off on btn on sunday so before the nfl starts you'll be able to watch that one as they will face off against a Michigan State team. Should be a pretty good matchup also in that one as Sparty, Cincinnati, they're in the top 25
Starting point is 00:22:50 this season. Their last time out, they won by 28 against DePaul. The past DePaul's been pretty good. They've fallen on hard times the last couple of years, but a women's program that had been up there for a while. So it'll be Michigan State, and then they will take on UNI next Friday before fully into Big Ten play with Purdue on the 29th. That's what's in front of the Iowa women's basketball team. Let's talk about the men. Preview the matchup against Iowa State. This is Locked on Hawkeyes.

Trent Conant back with you one final time on the Locked On Hawyes podcast thanks for making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day alright here we go it is Cy Hawk and we'll see there's no George Niang there to get under our feathers right there's not the same maybe divisiveness but all it's going to take is one now the last time that Iowa faced off against Iowa State in Carver. Two years ago,
Starting point is 00:25:07 Iowa State comes in. Iowa just played Duke, looked terrible in that one. They lost a game on a neutral court against TCU and you're wondering, eh, let's see. Iowa races out to a 24-4 lead. Just absolutely dominated it. Chris Murray doesn't play in that game, and Iowa wins it running away. Philip Aracha had 22. He's no longer there. Connor McCaffrey had 14. Iowa hit 12 of 23 threes, and let's go right there. Iowa needs to make shots in this one. If Iowa's going to pull the upset against the Cyclones, they need to knock down three-pointers. It's as simple as that. This team is going to get out. They're going to defend. We know that's what they are built on. That's TJ Otzelberger. The way that he has built this program is with physicality and great defense. And that's what they've done year after year. And they're going to do it again. That's how it is. So how do you beat
Starting point is 00:25:59 great teams on the defensive end? You make shots and it's easier said than done. I mean, if it was just saying it, you'd say it to everybody and they just do it, but it's not that simple. This defense is really good for Iowa State. Start right there. Need to make shots. Here's another thing that's been crazy about this team this year. They're struggling so much at the free throw line. You look through the numbers and Peyton Sanford on the season, he's shooting 84%. All right, that's really good. Josh Dix hasn't missed. He's 12-12. Perfect. All right, we're off to something. Owen Freeman, 53%. Brock Harding, 58%. Sato Traore, 54%. Drew Thelwell, percent. Drew Thelwell, 52 percent. Price Sanford even, a great shooter, 69 percent. Can't happen.
Starting point is 00:26:54 And if Iowa gets to the free throw line and they get the home whistle and they go to line 25, 30 times, we've got to be pushing to pull the upset 75, 80 percent from the free throw line. That's another component. Double digit threes, make your free throws and see if this defense is real. See if the defense that we look at with this matchup is actually something that's going to translate. Has it just been more opponent based and taking on a good Iowa State team? Here's the other thing. Iowa State, yeah, good defensively. They're also really good this year offensively. And that's the difference. They're seventh in the country in adjusted offensive efficiency. That's unheard of in the T.J. Otzelberger era at this point. They're doing a myriad of different ways. They don't get after the glass a ton on the offensive board. That's another one. We talk
Starting point is 00:27:40 about this is not a great Iowa rebounding team. So if you can play close to even, I think that's going to go a long way on top of it. Are we going to see Sadio Traore? I'm hopeful. I'm really hopeful that we're going to be able to get him back out there. His added athleticism, as long as that wheel's okay. Coming off the sprained ankle and it looks significant, not just playing, but playing at a high level using his strength, size, athleticism, those kind of things. That's what you need out of him. Not to be another body, but to be able to be more. And that's what you need out of that. That's where we are. I think this is a winnable game. This is going to be Iowa State's first time playing a true road game. And
Starting point is 00:28:24 we've seen this with all these conferences now opening up. We saw the SEC-ACC challenge, certainly for the home teams of the SEC. Playing at home matters. And I think that's going to go a long way. Even though it's not going to be banged out, there's probably going to be a few thousand, maybe more than a few thousand Cyclone fans that are going to be in the building for this one. maybe more than a few thousand Cyclone fans that are going to be in the building for this one. Still, every time you feel like Iowa in this matchup here recently is out, don't have a chance,
Starting point is 00:28:56 they played really well. And I think Iowa's going to play well tomorrow night. Let's get it done. Let's get a victory. Again, stop on out to Jethro's.
