stations all across the state, including Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, Des Moines with our flagship,
106.3 KX&O, along with the Quad Cities and Sioux City. Well, we are going to break down what
happened in the Iowa loss to Iowa State. 6662. We'll look at some of the highs, some of the
lows, frustrations, and a lot of what could have been as Iowa could have got their first
signature victory of the Ben McCollum era. We're also going to be joined by David Eichol. We'll talk some
basketball with David. Also a look at football in the upcoming transfer portal with David Eichold
from 24-7 sports. And then we're going to take a big picture look at both the men's and women's
basketball teams and these back-to-back losses to Iowa State. We'll talk about that a little bit
later on. But let's start in the here and now, Iowa falling to Iowa State, a game where Iowa
jumped out early. And we saw it for a small glimpse out in East Lansing a little over a week ago
against Michigan State would turn out to be a blowout loss for the Hawkeyes and certainly Iowa
acclimated themselves much better in this one and within opportunity. There's going to be a myriad
of things that are going to be talked about in this game. And when you go through and look at it,
certainly the big start that Iowa got off to. Shot the ball well. We're knocking down shots all
over the place. You saw Bennett Sturts. He got going early on, but it wasn't just him. Cooper
Koch, I thought was really good early in that game. Overall, the game that you got out of Tavion Banks
and maybe his best game in a Hawkeye uniform when you couple what he did on the
offensive end of the floor, also what he did on the defensive end of the floor.
We saw the rotation tighten up a little bit and the great question that we had,
Brendan Hassan, what is he going to get some minutes?
He did and played a little bit in this one.
But overall, I think this is what we're going to see from this Iowa squad.
And proving that you can go toe to toe with a team that has the best win in the country.
There is nobody that has gone on the road and got a better victory
than Iowa State has this season
when they went Saturday to West Lafayette
and absolutely throttled Purdue
who was at that time the number one team
in the country in that fashion.
Nobody has a true
true road victory like that in college basketball
and Iowa was right there.
Opportunities. Now we go through
and probably the biggest component
is what happened at the beginning of the second half.
What turned into what? One point of 23 to four run
19, 17, or whatever it was, it was just twofold.
A, Iowa couldn't score.
And you saw right away, I was coming out.
And they're going to play physical, and they're going to play their style of defense,
and they're going to be up on you.
They got two tremendous defenders on the perimeter with Taman Lipsy,
who we've seen four years, and we know what kind of defender,
the physicality that he brings, coupled with Killian Toray.
And the freshman out of France has been outstanding.
and one of the top defenders that you're going to find.
Now, we've got two guys like that on the perimeter.
It's going to make it difficult,
and they certainly did that against Bennett Sturts.
They were physical with him.
Same thing that Michigan State did.
And same thing that most everybody's game plan is going to be now.
You're going to play physical against Bennett Sturts.
Speaking of Bennett, he finishes the game 311 from the field,
three of eight from the three point line.
One of two and a big miss free throw down the stretch there.
Five rebounds in the game, also finished with four assists,
led the team in that category.
Three turnovers in the game, as Iowa turned it over 16 times.
A solid game from Bennett Sturts,
but for your preseason, All-American,
I think where expectations were for him,
you need more.
And if you're going to pull off a victory like that,
you need to get more out of Bennett Sturts.
A number of people were talking about a couple of different shots of him,
kind of shaking his hand at different moments
during the second half of the game.
As you noticed, there were different times
where they were really not running the office,
offense through him. And there was that stretch with about 10 minutes to go. You saw a bunch of
that. And it was a lot of kale combs running the point, which he does plenty. But so many of those
times, it is starts then off the ball, working hard to get the ball back. And he drifted off to
the corner a couple of different times. Something to at minimum keep an eye on, see if there's
anything there. I'll listen to Coach McCollum's press conference just a little bit ago after
things wrapped up in Ames. And didn't say anything about that, but at least something.
at minimum that you have to file away in the game.
Iowa, just two of eight shooting in the second half from the three-point line,
finally got to the foul line.
And I know that's going to be a big conversation.
I mean, when you look overall at the box score, Iowa, going up against Iowa State,
the way they play defense, you just get to the free throw line five times in the game
on the other side.
Iowa State gets to the foul line 23 times.
That's going to be eye opening.
I love the way this team competed.
I love the way that they,
bounced back so many times you'll see a team and certainly a team that is new right together for
the first time like this iwa squad is and they'll will and he saw that in moments against michigan
state that's not the case they came roaring back had that eight-nothing run got it back within a two-point
game and then down the stretch it was it was back and forth and iowa with those opportunities to get over
the hump to maybe pull off what would have been a huge huge upset speaking of that how about i was
rebounding. Now, this is not a traditional big team, if you will, in Iowa State. Buchanan inside,
he's a big guy. Of course, they got Jefferson, who is a beast. But overall, this is not a great
rebounding team in comparison to some of the teams that I was going to see. Still, for Iowa,
as small as they are in comparison to most teams, certainly at the power structure level,
to out rebound Iowa State 3128, I thought was huge. However, down the stretch, gave up what,
Offensive rebounds and last minute plus of the game early in the game when Iowa had a chance to really extend that lead out.
A couple of offensive rebounds kept Iowa State in it early in the game.
Something they still got to clear up.
Definitely need to do that overall in the game.
When you look at Iowa State, they finished the game.
Rebounds with 28, but 10 offensive rebounds, and it felt like even more than that, certainly watching this one.
For Iowa mentioned, it was Tavion Banks leading the way 14 points in the ball.
game knocked down a couple of three-pointers. It looks really good at that. I need to get him involved
a little bit more. Cooper Koch, good start for him. He finishes the game with five points. I hit that
three-pointer in the game. Ten for Manwa, who is really good, also playing inside 10 points,
six rebounds out of him along with a couple of assists and had a block shot. And the only other
player in double figures was Bennett Sturts with the aforementioned 10 points. Eight points
off the bench for Tate Sage. And when Iowa was in that tremendous backside of that run,
he was the guy that got him out of it and finally stopped the bleeding in the beginning of the
second half. Ben McCollum used a couple of different timeouts. And speaking of timeouts down the stretch,
I would did not have a timeout remaining. And this is something that is different now this
season in college basketball. In the past, of course, we would go over to the review and we'd
see the butt of the official as he'd be sitting at the monitor and they cut over to him. And
we'd be waiting and waiting and waiting.
And college basketball made the decision that they were going to go away from that.
That no more were they going to be sitting there, lengthening out these games.
At the end of game situations, it wasn't good for the fans, it wasn't good for the players,
it wasn't good for the coaches, just time after time, review after review.
So they made a change.
And now you have a challenge system that's in place.
And if you don't have a time out, you don't have a challenge available, you can't use it.
Iowa could have got the ball there.
Coach was asked about it afterwards,
and Coach McCollum said that,
I'd just like them to get the rebound there,
and they don't have to worry about that.
Is it bounced off?
It looked like an Iowa State player.
They cut away from that pretty quickly,
but regardless, it didn't happen.
66-62.
It's a loss.
And that's another thing that Ben McCollum,
you know, asked kind of the improvement that we saw
in comparison to that game against Michigan State.
He said, I like to win.
And I love that from him.
There's no moral victories.
They didn't go to Ames for moral victories.
They went there to win a basketball game.
Didn't get it done, but I thought we saw even more growth out of this team.
We saw they competed.
Now, you also saw the fashion this game was, 6662.
And that's the way it's going to have to be.
Against these top-level teams, unless you are hitting, you know, 12-3-pointers in a game,
you're not going to be able to go out there and outscore teams anymore.
But that's okay, because guess what?
This team defense, they grind on that end of the floor.
I like the way things are coming forward.
Isaiah Howard also got to give mention to him,
thought he was really good, and they really needed him.
When Sturts was kind of starting to go into that quarter
a couple of different times offensively,
they needed his playmaking ability, really helped out Kill Combs.
He finished with 4.3 assists in the ball game.
Hassan mentioned had to hoist up that 30-footer.
That was well short, and I ended up getting a couple offensive rebounds
and a tip in at the shot clock buzzer to get a bucket when he was in the game early
and they came in late as I was trying to get a three-pointer late in the game.
But growing, absolutely.
And we're going to talk more big picture about this team.
What this means about this squad and kind of going forward with this team in a night where
would have, should have, could have maybe got a different whistle.
No plenty of people will be saying that.
That's where we are.
We continue here, locked on Hawkeyes.
And we got more to talk about.
Want to talk some women's basketball, some big picture questions with them,
David Eichold, who covers the Hawkeyes for 24-7 Sports Hawkeye Insider is going to join us.
Plus, what is I would need to do in the transfer portal?
We'll talk about that with David Eicholt.
When we come back on the lockdown Hawkeyes podcast.

Fandual, the game moves fast. And so can you.
so let's save them in for a minute let's just ladies first recap what we saw last night
i saw a game that i thought was going to get away from iowa in the third quarter
trent and i yesterday spent the day at least i'm trying to convince them that this one's got a chance
to be an all-timer i love both of the rosters i love the matchups in the game and thought it had a
chance to be really good as it turned out it was a very close basketball game both teams really struggling
with their free throws. But to Iowa's credit, they got back into it to Iowa State's credit.
They had enough of a lead and were able to hold on and get another win in the Sighawks series, David.
Yeah, I mean, I think there's two things. One, I think two of the top 13 or 14 teams in the country reside in the state of Iowa.
I think this has a chance to be Bill Fennelly's best team that he's had in his entire career because compared to last year, the Iowa State team, like Audi Crooks had 31 last year.
but in the fourth quarter, she was shut down because Iowa realized, you know,
they didn't have the help on the perimeter that they needed to really have a chance of that.
And that's why Iowa ended up winning.
They started fronting Audi.
They really couldn't do that this year because of all the other complementary pieces around them.
But at the same time, the one good quality, you know, a good quality of our Jan Jensen's team is the fact that they never quit.
That game could have gotten even more unraveled after they were down 17 and they found a way to battle back and have a chance
with under 45 seconds to go.
I think it was a sweet 16 elite eight out caliber game.
I thought both teams have a chance to do pretty well
throughout the remainder of the season
and have a shot of doing some damage come March.
But I left more encouraged about Iowa than I was heading into the game.
Look, I mean, Iowa had a couple of the younger players struggle,
but for Iowa to battle back in that hostile atmosphere that they experienced
because, you know, I said this leading into the game, guys,
this was the first hostile environment that Iowa has played in.
Yeah, they were in Florida, but let's be real.
Iowa is going to be the home crowd favor and at least 75% of the games this year.
And that's just because of the brand that they've continued to build.
That ain't happening in Ames.
Everybody hates Iowa.
It aims Iowa.
Right.
So I think the fact that Iowa responded in such a way, despite Ava Hyde and fouling out,
them getting in foul trouble, chit chat right, really emerging on the scene,
I'm pretty encouraged about what I saw from the women last night.
You mentioned in passing there off the bench.
Stremlow just, she's really inconsistent.
Natty deal, same thing.
I think she's going to play well against maybe some lesser opponents,
but I don't think she's quite ready for elite level competition like she saw last night.
That leads me to Emily Rodriguez.
Fill us in on that injury.
She's got some bad habits she needs to break from her time at UCF,
but I think there's a lot of upside to her game and certainly a player that can create
herself, something that outside of chit-chat, they just don't have a whole lot on the
roster. What can you tell us about her injury and maybe ironing out some of those deficiencies
because I think she can be a really important player for them? No, and I don't disagree with
me whatsoever because I do think Iowa this year, the roster, they have players that can at least
somewhat create their own shot. Like, if you give the ball to Ava High end of the post, she's going
to be all to make something happen for the most part. She can hit mid-range shots, right? Chit-chat right
is better than any of us could have expected, I think.
Like, I expected a little bit of a jump from what she had last year,
but she's looking like she was an absolute steal out of the portal,
and she's saying three is at a high rate.
But for Emily Rodriguez, yes, she has to break some bad habits.
Remember, I think we talked after she dropped 18 in her first game or something,
and I said, look, you can tell she's a shot creator,
but are those really good shots if the shot isn't falling?
And things kind of leveled out over the next couple of games.
But right now she's battling a back issue.
I think it's something that could potentially linger.
But I think it could be a true day-to-day game-by-game feel at this point.
I'm not going to say it's going to be something that's super long term.
I'm very curious what Jan Jensen says about her if she ends up playing against Lindenwood
or if they're just going to rest her, then try to bring her back against the Yukon.
But I'd also argue that's a heck of a way to try to bring back Emily Rodriguez against the best team in the country.
And I think the best player in the country and fair strong.
If you don't know how her game is or you haven't watched her play, yeah, you need to do that because she is an absolutely dominant player on both sides of the ball.
But you're right, man.
I mean, in terms of Emily, like that's another player where if the shot clocks whining down, she can make something happen.
She has a lot of good fundamentals, has to continue to buy into the defensive side of the ball.
But there's a lot of upside to her game.
I think it's very clear to see why everybody on that coaching staff is so excited about her.
Final couple of minutes here with David Eichol 24-7 SportsHawkeye Insider.com.
David, football, the practices, the bowl prep has begun.
Any nuggets trickling out?
Are you hearing anything football related, David?
It's just going to be really interesting next few weeks, man.
Like, everything is going to change by the hour.
It feels like one of my biggest things is I'm very intrigued about how many players enter the portal before the bowl game.
or if they're going to go through bull prep
and then enter the transfer portal
or announce their intention, right?
Because there is some benefit to if you announce early,
you know, teams across the country,
you can be like, look, you can't technically contact them,
but you can at least put them on top of your radar
or do some setting.
And, you know, the guys can kind of market themselves,
but the guys that wait will have more film.
I'm very curious, you know,
if Iowa cannot just, you know, let guys go in,
you know, I know they want to bring in some guys different positions,
but this is a new era.
You have to retain your top playmakers, too.
I think Iowa does a really great job of, you know, recruiting for culture and guys that
will fit within the system, but I'll tell you what, can culture overcome a $500,000 increase
from other places if the player can go out in the open market and go get that?
I think that's kind of the big question.
I do think Jeremy Hecklinsky is a little bit farther ahead than Hank Brown as far as
the starting quarterback potentially for next season.
And I think you're also going to hear a lot about Rashad Godfrey taking a jump.
I think there's a big opportunity in the secondary as well.
And this is just something that Elliott Clawfulf has brought up.
And this is just a little teaser of a nugget that we put in our VIP notes this morning.
Don't be surprised if South Dakota cornerback, Shahid Barrow's tries to get a medical redshirt
and come back to the Hawkeyes next season.
I know he went through a senior day, but he was only played in three games.
and he's kind of been battling injuries here and there throughout the season.
We'll see if he gets that because if that happens and he gets another year with Still Parker,
I think we all know right now, guys,
that there's some room in the secondary for guys to emerge and kind of run that playing time.
You know, I know some people are looking at offensive line.
I kind of like the pieces that they have coming back.
And here's the other part.
We've seen them bring in three transfers.
Rusty Fest is the only guy that played.
Bryce George, we anticipated he was at least going to be in the mix.
Now, I know he had an injury in that first game, but it sounded like he was kind of out for that battle for left tackle.
It was down to Dostler and Lalkin.
We saw the season that he had.
You go back to what was it, Parker, the kid that came in from Saginaw State, a lot of people thought he was going to be a tackle.
He never played.
So with the Iowa system, with what obviously the expectations are for Ferrence and Barnett and company with that offensive line, is that a place unless it is just that a depth piece, it probably doesn't make sense just because it hasn't worked very well for the Iowa system.
And I agree here.
I think if you're going to go out there and get an offensive line guy, I think you need to have two years of eligibility, right, unless you're talking like a powerful tackle that enters the portal that's proven.
Right.
Otherwise, I do think you need that piece.
But the other thing is, guys, I'm not doubting George Barnett.
Like I said two, three years ago that you need more time.
And I think, you know, Iowa has a strong chance to win the Joe Moore award this year.
The guys who have been behind the elite offensive line that they have, they've been developed in the system now.
Now, yes, you know, they'll have some ugly reps here and there, but like, I'm going to trust Barnett's development and the guys that they got in there.
You know, Kate Piper, I think, you know, if he slides over to center, I'd be interested about that because they've talked about him playing center at the next level whenever he goes to the NFL.
And at one point, he was, you know, label the first round draft pick by a couple different outlets.
So if you're going to get a depth piece, I think they need multiple years of eligibility.
But at the same time, guys, I can name four other positions.
I think you have to go after before you look at offensive line.
You have to get a wider receiver.
I think you have to get two wide receivers, quite frankly.
And by the way, two years of eligibility, multiple years.
You need a cornerback.
You need a defensive tackle.
Somebody to help Bryce Hawthor now.
And I think you need an edge rusher.
That's a proven guy before you even think about the offensive line.
And then the other part of it, and again, this is my speculation, what's going to happen
in the running back room?
they have guys with multiple years of eligibility.
Jazz Patterson returned,
and I thought he'd have a bigger role than he had.
He didn't play much down the stretch.
Had to overcome an injury.
You know,
is he going to be a guy that enters the portal?
Are they going to be able to retain all these guys?
And if you have multiple running backs leave,
depending on who it is, guys,
I think you at least have to look in the portal
to potentially get someone else.
So as far as Iowa's depth on the offensive line,
there's a lot of unproven names,
but you can at least take comfort in the fact that they've been
in the Iowa system for at least a year or two.
And they've been developing behind this
the group of offensive linemen.
So that means those guys know what it takes
to kind of reach that level.

Trent Connum back with you one final time. Locked on Hawkeyes. As we come on the heels of back-to-back
losses from Iowa, the Iowa Corn SciHawks series, is that still the presenting sponsor?
The SciHawks series has gone very well. Football, volleyball, both basketball, both basketball,
ball, wrestling. It's a better drumming, and it sucks to lose to your rival. And I know there's
plenty of, well, as Iowa, your biggest rival, Iowa state the biggest rival for Iowa, regardless.
It's your in-state rivalry, and it sucks. Nobody wants to go through that. And we just did.
However, when we go back to Wednesday night, the way that Iowa battled back and do it in that
environment, I think showed us a lot about this Iowa women's team. And I've talked the last couple of days
about the upside of this team.
I think they have a chance to get even better.
And are they going to be competing at the top level of the sport?
Are they going to be getting back to a final four?
I don't think so.
But maybe progressive.
A year ago, year number one without Caitlin Clark, got to the tournament,
what a game, got to the round of 32.
And can you take another step with a pretty young group overall?
Yeah, you got three veterans out there that are going to be playing a ton.
Obviously, what we've seen out of McCabe, Hannah Stulkey,
a couple with Kylie Fierbach.
But after those three, this is still a lot of young faces.
Talked about Rodriguez, getting her back and healthy.
What we've seen at different moments with some of these different players,
Eva Hayden is going to turn into a star.
And he has the components for this team to be able to get there.
Get to the second weekend.
Get to a sweet 16 and go from there and keep building.
And getting this program back to that upper echelon level.
And I think that can happen.
On the men's side, this feels so different than what we saw against Michigan State.
And there's a certain style that they're going to have to play to win games.
But the Big Ten, after Michigan, Michigan State, and even Purdue, there's a wide open tier.
And you can put Illinois up there.
You put UCLA.
Those would probably be the top of the group.
But Iowa, Wisconsin, a lot of teams.
They throw in that next group of teams.
and if you are among the best of them,
and you're not just fighting to be an NCAA tournament team,
you're maybe fighting to be six-seven seed, something like that.
Maybe a path that can go your way
and make a run come tournament time.
I think we saw enough out of both of these teams,
even in losing efforts the last couple of nights.
The coaches don't want to talk about moral victories,
but we can hear.
There's a long season in front of us,
but I think we're going to have a fun winter
and we need it with the weather of Iowa hoops.
here across the state of Iowa.
That'll do it for today.
