We got to hear from the three football coordinators for Iowa football.
And a look at why 2006 is going to be much different for the Hawkeye.
You are Locked-on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day.
Hey, welcome in. I'm Trent Condon, and this is the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast,
your daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast.
Busy show today, a lot of football talk for you.
be joined a little bit later on by Pope County I Club President Addison Bouton, the spring
event happening in West Des Moines coming up here in less than two weeks. We'll get some details on
that and talk some Hawkeyes with Addison coming up a little bit later on. We're going to also
point out something that is much different about this year's upcoming Iowa football team. We'll get
to that a little bit later on and just the lack of senior leadership that is something that has been
the backbone of Iowa football. But we begin today with the conversation, taking a look at some press
conference notes from yesterday as we got to hear from the three Iowa football coordinators.
Phil Parker, the defensive coordinator, went first, then the newest addition to the Iowa staff,
Chris Polizzi, who joins after being an assistant back in the day of grad assistant and getting
to come back around, a lot of excitement you could tell from him of getting his opportunity from
Iowa football.
And then finally we'll get into Tim Lester and talk about what the Hawkeye offensive coordinator
going into year number three has got up his sleeve.
So go through a couple of, I thought, interesting ones.
with Phil Parker. He was up first. Now, when you hear from Phil Parker, I think we always have to
realize that he is not going to go out there and be overwhelming with his praise of his players.
That is not the way that he is built. Phil Parker is much more close to the vest about what he talks about.
And when he brings up names, that's something always though I think you need to file away.
I want to start first in the defensive backfield. And that is, of course, a place that is his
backbone. That is something that has been a big part of his career as a defensive back coach
and what he has done throughout the course of his career. One thing that he said, and he said
this plenty of times before, but I want my five best five guys on the field. And when you're
looking at that, we know, obviously, there's going to be Zach Lugmer. He's going to be a part of it.
And we've been talking throughout this spring and even going back after the season or just finding what
his spot's going to be. That's something that Saturday, I want to keep my eye on to seeing where exactly
he is going to be how they're going to use him.
And I think one of the things that definitely stood out is it's going to be
somewhere the safety positions.
Now you're two traditional safety positions, either free safety or strong safety.
And then the other one that new, but not that new anymore, but the cash position,
that fifth defensive back that they've had on the field as they moved away from the
four three alignment, moved back into a four to five type of look.
They've had a bunch of different players out there.
Lutmer, maybe that is his best position.
but it's also going to be about fitting in the other guys.
And one of the guys that he talked about,
one of the new additions out of the transfer portal is Tyler Brown.
He said that Tyler Brown has done a really good job of adapting of what's going on.
That is good to hear.
A guy that came in was a pretty good accolades coming in from James Madison
and finding a way to get him involved.
He also talked about the athleticism of Anthony Hawkins.
And Hawkins, you know, he's built differently.
Six foot three got a little bit more size to him,
but talking about his athleticism.
his ranginess.
Now, if I had to handicap it at this point in time,
I think I would say that those two guys would be your safeties on the back end of things.
And then Lutmer would be playing that cash position.
I think that makes a lot of sense.
And another thing that makes you believe that is because he talked about
Zach Lutmer after having to play some cornerback a year ago,
it sounds like Phil Parker is pretty happy about the depth that they currently have
at the cornerback position.
And that is certainly something that you don't always,
get that singing praise. It feels like he's always want, always wants some more guys back there
in the defensive backfield and certainly at the cornerback spot. But, you know, after what we saw
last year, I thought Deshaun Lee, he took a step forward and going into his final year of
eligibility, certainly saw a big step out of him. Not the biggest corner by any means, but he knows
it, leadership. And that's something he also talked about with Deshaun Lee and taking some of these
young guys under his wing. Jalen Watson, another guy. I think it's going to come down to Jalen
Watson and Jacob Wallace, the two JWs that makes it confusing.
Watson been around a little bit longer.
It'll still be a red shirt freshman year coming up for Jacob Wallace this year.
Both of those guys competing.
And then Rashad Godfrey, I mean, you feel pretty solid about going forward deep at that
cornerback spot, all guys that were thrust into different roles last season because of
injuries, different things that happened throughout the course of the year.
You go back to the Nebraska game, the physicality Rashad Godfrey played with.
And I do wonder, and maybe he becomes the heir apparent at that cash position just because of the physicality that he brings to things.
But I'd definitely like to hear the part about that.
He did say the main focus for Lutmer has been the free safety position out of the two back-end things.
But we've just seen him play at such a high level at cash.
I do think eventually that's the way that it's going to be there.
He also talked about the cash position, some other guys, both Wallace and Watson.
He brought both of those guys up.
Said Tyler Brown maybe has an opportunity to play that position also.
And then also we go back to the open practice that the beat riders were allowed into.
And Marcelo Vitti was also out there for that.
So those are some of the names certainly to know.
But defensive backfield, Bill Parker, I think year after year,
we're feeling pretty good about what they're going to get there.
However, the big question mark remains in the middle.
And one name that was brought up at defensive tackle is Devin Kennedy.
Now we go back and we know I think what you're going to get out of Bryce Hawthorne.
Hawthorne, a guy that was part of the rotation a year ago, thought played really well.
Remember, he's still got two years of eligibility remaining after coming in from South Dakota State
and seeing some playing time a year ago, continue to develop there and doing all the extra things.
And that's what makes it maybe not fun for those defense alignment.
I know I bring it up often every dayers.
I know you've heard me bring this example up again.
I did have an opportunity years ago to see a little bit of.
of a practice and what are the things that just stepped up,
that stood out to me, excuse me, was how boring it is.
I mean, these defense alignment, hand placement,
the same drills, the repetitive motion,
but that's why year after year Iowa football is so fundamentally sound.
And that's why Calvin Bell, year after year,
has these guys being able to play at a high level.
This might be the most difficult year for Calvin Bell.
You, after a place, four starters from a year ago,
you got some talent that you're excited.
about still doing that and finding some girth inside.
At the beginning, sounded like Devin Kennedy, when his name gets brought up, he's now
a redshirt sophomore, and kind of the time is now for him to come.
He's got the bloodlines.
Jimmy Kennedy was his dad, still's his dad.
The dad, though, that played in the NFL, played a Penn State, played at a really
high level.
He's not the same size as the old man, but Devin Kennedy, he can continue to build, get
a little bit bigger.
That's one.
You got the two walk-ons that have also been talked about a lot with Gaffee and.
Hubert in the middle. Alibajou, who they brought in from North Dakota. We'll see if it's going to
click for him. Bryce Stevenson from Holy Cross. He was a guy that maybe it was a little bit overwhelming
at first making this jump up from Holy Cross to Iowa, but he's starting to get his foot feet
underneath him. But that was the name that got me excited when Phil Parker brought up
Devin Kennedy. And leadership skills. And Deshaun Lee, that was something we talked about earlier.
That was brought up a couple of different times, though, by Phil Parker. Defense is going to be
solid the linebacker group looks like at this point, Cam Buffington and Jaden Montgomery,
the two most likely starters. Who's going to be in the middle? Who's going to be on the outside?
That is still to be determined. But that's how it's looking at that spot. And then all the
young talent too. We talked about the Derek Weiss Goss of the Wild. Van Kackcruicks, I think,
still has a chance to see some playing time this year. And certainly when they go for three,
Preston Reese, a guy like that. So a lot of different moving parts out there. He was asked one
question too. Phil Parker was about some of the younger guys and just really didn't want to talk
about the younger guys in typical Phil Parker fashion. Let's jump over to the special teams next.
You talk about a rebuilding job. That is certainly going to be the case here for Chris Polizzi.
Pellizzi comes in after the departure of Lavar Woods, moves on to Michigan State, gets a hefty pay raise,
but on top of it, he also gets the opportunity to be the associate head coach and get that title with Michigan
state and maybe help his elevation going forward as he works to become a head coach someday
in the collegiate ranks.
Blissie comes in and you could tell right away just what this job means for him.
Began in Iowa City first time as a grad assistant.
He's been all over the place, Tennessee Tech, Western Carolina, Tulsa.
He's been bouncing around in a bunch of different places and able to come back to Iowa
City.
That means a lot.
And when he talked about it and he talked about that here's this quote.
Everywhere I went, I guess I used the term.
You can't enjoy the sweet until you tasted the bitter.
Everywhere I went, there was something off and just didn't feel right about where it was.
Believe me, I had tremendous experiences there, but it just wasn't Iowa.
I think it all stems from the head coach.
Unquote, that's from Chris Polizzi, a guy that you can tell.
This is an important one for him to get the opportunity to come back to Iowa City and what it means to coach under Kirk Farrants.
But he's got work to do.
And when he looked at the two specialists, kicker and punter, I don't think it anything is going to be determined on Saturday.
I think this is something that is going to lead in.
And Polizzi basically said that.
At the punter position, Boston Everett said he's never put a helmet out before.
And he hasn't played football.
He is an Aussie guy that comes over.
And then he got Tanner Philpott, Waukee Northwest kid, who was at Simpson the last couple of years.
If I had to give an edge maybe slightly to Philpot because Tori Taylor, he,
punted for the first time in front of no fans. It was in 2020. He also did it as a guy that was
what, 22, 23 years old. On the other side, when Reese Dakin came in, he was a young guy and we saw
struggles early in his career. I give the slight edge to Phil Pot, we will see a little bit more
on Saturday. And same thing at the kicker position. They went out in the portal and they got Eli
Ozick from North Dakota State. I think he is the presumed starter, but where's going to be there?
Going to be pushing him and that's one that's going to lead up. Still Ozick, I think,'s going to
be the guy, but maybe the gap, not very significant.
So that is defense and special teams.
Next, let's go to the offense.
Tim Lester, who has always got a smile on his face.
Is he going to give a smile to us this year with the Hawkeye offense?
We'll talk about that next.

Trent kind of back with you once again on the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast.
Thanks for being with us and making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day.
Well, we wrap things up with the coordinator press conferences and we go to offense.
Tim Lester goes into year number three.
He'll have a new quarterback once again.
He also goes into that with a little bit of buzz being created about the wide receiver
position.
And the praise for Tony Diaz has not slowed down.
had a lot to say about Diaz, a guy that can go out there and make plays all over the field,
said he was hopeful that maybe he can slow down a little bit, and maybe not even slowdowns,
not even the right terminology, that he just, he sacrifices his body so much.
He goes up for the ball every single time.
He looks to make plays, and boy, does that feel good to hear for a Hawkeye wide receiver?
This is what Lester had to say, Tony, he could come down with the ball.
I wish he was more productive of his, protective of his body.
he goes for it now. He might land on his head, but he'll end up with the ball at the end.
He talked a lot about explosiveness. And that is something that we go back to a week ago when we got to hear from the Hawkeye
quarterbacks, Hank Brown and Jeremy Hecklinsky. They talked about the potential of having a more
explosive offense this season. That means making plays down the field. And when Lester yesterday was
talking about the Iowa football quarterback position, I think this race is too close to call. I came into the
offseason firmly believing that Jeremy Hecklinski was going to be the guy. And yes, they weren't
going to come out and say it. They wanted to keep Hank Brown around. They definitely wanted to have
that veteran option to go along with Hecklinski. But just reading between the lines with what
Lester had to say, I think this is going to be something that goes up. I personally want Henclinsey.
I like his movement. I like that he can move around a little bit. He's a little guy. We definitely know
that. And he need a backup like Hank Brown with experience. That's what I want to see. I don't know if I'm
going to get exactly though what I want. We'll see more on Saturday for both of these guys,
but I think this is going to be in the end too close to call at the quarterback position
between these two guys. I know people go back to the Indiana game, and I do too. You have the
national champions beat. All you have to do, complete a screen pass. If that thing is complete,
Iowa gets a first down. They're able to run off the clock and they got a chip shot field goal
to Pete the Hoosiers. That's how close they were. Hank Brown missed the throw. He missed the
throw and that lingers in our minds. However, guys can improve. Guys can develop. And there were a
couple throws in that game, too, where he saw the arm talent of Hank Brown. He definitely has that.
He talks about Hank Brown playing smaller, getting that base underneath him a little bit more
because he has the armed talent to definitely make those plays. And another thought,
a point that I thought was interesting from Tim Lester. As he mentioned, the two quarterbacks,
we think a heck, heck Linsky is this guy that can just run around and make plays and do those kind of things.
he is quicker, but Hank Brown is faster.
And it kind of reminds me back of the days where Nathan Chandler was actually faster
straight ahead than Brad Banks, which seems impossible when he watched him on the football
field.
But in terms of 40 times, Nathan Chandler was actually faster.
Now, football speed different than track speed, if you will, and 40 times.
But I think it goes to show you that maybe there is a little bit more athleticism to Hank
Brown than we are giving him credit for.
Speaking of an explosive, that came up at time and finding playmakers.
And they want to continue to do that.
I think they got it with Tony Diaz.
I think also Evan James is going to be able to help them out this season.
The running back room is loaded.
Once again, this season, L.J. Phillips comes in from South Dakota after rushing for nearly
2,000 yards a year ago.
One thing that he had to say about him, LJ. Phillips, as I think they found their short yardage back.
Another question that I have had and has mentioned a couple of different times,
Camari Bolton, feel like you know what you have with
Kamari Bolton, very solid, very good.
Is there another level to him?
And Tim Lester said he has taken his game up another level this year.
Anticipate probably a timeshare between those two guys this year.
You still have Xavier Williams back there.
Nathan McNeil, more of a complete guy that can do a lot of things.
And a guy that just looks to move a little bit differently,
liked what we saw out of him during his freshman campaign.
But that's definitely a big thing.
One other part I wanted to bring up is the tight end position, and specifically DJ Venami,
Venami, who was a breakout star in the back half of last season.
This is what Tim Lester had to say about him.
We've added some things to help bring his talents to light, which you won't see on Saturday,
but you'll see in the fall.
When you have players like that, you have to find ways for them to get the ball.
Unquote.
That's exciting because it's a question that we have pondered here on Locked on Hawkeyes
quite often.
in the tight end position in the Tim Lester offense.
How it's going to be utilized.
We haven't seen a ton of it, certainly compared to the past,
how they're going to use it.
And a talent like Venomi, you have to get him involved.
And you have to get him involved in different ways.
He broke out again in the bowl game, how good he looked there.
He's got special talents.
And it's not just talents out running routes and catching the football,
but also as a blocker.
Really excited.
Now you get a couple of guys along with him in the backfield.
Addison Estringa coming back.
after the injury that he sustained early last season.
You'll get him back out there for one final year.
Zach Ortworth is certainly shown glimpses,
and then the young talent that's also in that room.
So a lot of excitement at the tight end position.
It's crazy.
The depth, tight end, running back definitely there.
Feeling in good shape for Iowa,
do they have the guy to get them the ball, though,
and the signal caller?
Do they choose correctly between Hecklinsky and Hank Brown?
That is the big question as we await Saturday
and the open practice.
Coming back on the other side, we'll be joined by Polk County I Club President Addison Bouten taking a look at their event right around the corner.
That's next on Locked on Hawkeyes.
The NBA playoffs are here.
Every possession matters.
Every matchup is magnified and every game can swing a series.
Right now, Fanduels giving new customers a great way to get in on the action.
Here's what I like about it.
You can bet just $5 and get $250 in bonus bets if your first bet wins.
The app makes it easy to follow the action with play.
their stats, trends, matchups all in one place.
And during the playoffs, that extra insight really matters when you're looking at stars,
role players, and key moments.
It just makes the entire playoff experience more engaging from start to finish.
Now, I got my eyes tonight to take a look at the Timberwolves and Nuggets as the scene
shifts back to Minnesota.
I think DeSumu is going to have a good game.
I can hop on the Fandual app and bet that.
You can put together a same game parlay and jump that way and a whole lot more.
So head to Fandual.com to get started.
Fandual, play your game.
All right, let's talk Polk County I Club, Addison, about the president of Polkney I
Club is here.
Addison, good to see you again.
You were in studio with this last year.
And you know what I want to start with you is just kind of the enthusiasm around
the athletic programs in particular.
And I don't mean to sound like I'm throwing McCaffrey on the bus because friend and I
both like them.
Trent and I were both McCaffrey guys.
But what a difference a year makes, right?
I mean, I have to believe that the enthusiasm meter, if there is a thing, when it comes to
men's basketball, is over in the red zone.
Because what a great year for Hawkeye Minsbasket.
Yeah, I completely agree with you.
Yep.
I think everyone's just real excited about, they were excited with the higher hiring.
Yeah, I'm with you too.
And everyone I talk to, like, I really like Fran.
Yeah.
He was good to our club.
Always came to our events and was really gracious.
but yeah, I think it was time for a change.
And when he came in and did what he did with essentially,
let's be honest, a Drake team, you know, in the Big Ten and had some struggles here and there.
But making that run to the elite eight, I mean, yeah, fans are really excited.
No, no doubt about it.
I think it's going to show up when season tickets go on as well.
Yes, people want to jump aboard and definitely have that.
Well, as we look towards a couple of weeks away, a little less than two weeks away,
coming up on that Wednesday, Addison, the Pout County I Club.
Before we get into the details, just the I club these days, it was such a big thing.
I just remember growing up and get the sticker in the mail, how exciting that was for a young kid.
All right, here we go.
I get to jump aboard.
I'm supporting the Hawkeyes.
Well, now we have Swarm.
We have NIL.
We have all these different components of what supporting the Hawkeye Athletic program looks like and the I clubs.
What does it mean today?
And what does the support of the I club?
What does your guys' support now mean to the?
athletic department. Well, I think in some ways it hasn't changed Trent, but in other ways from the,
like you said, from the financial aspect with all the, not only with the swarm and with the
rev share and with, but I think too what we try and do, yes, we are trying to be a fundraising
branch of the University Athletic Department as well, but we try and do fun things and really engage
fans here in the Des Moines area, just like our event coming up. I mean, we're bringing a lot of
a lot of the coaches in, people get to mingle with them, hear them speak in person.
I think it's just, yeah, we, yes, we're trying to raise money, but other things we do,
and maybe we'll talk about it here in a little bit with our golf outing, is we just try and
do fun things, Hawkeye-related here in the Des Moines area.
So the event itself, let's fast forward.
Wednesday, May the 6th is upon us.
What does the night entail?
I mean, how much time do you need to commit?
If you're going to go to the event, you want to get there just a little bit before it starts, mingle around, et cetera.
Here are all the coaches.
How long will the night go?
I would say two and a half to three hours total from start to finish.
We are really excited about this.
We've bounced around venues in the past.
Typically has been hotels.
But we're really excited about our new venue this year.
It is called the Meridian.
It is in a old Wells Fargo office building just south of university.
The way I like to describe it to people is where the club car is, the club car restaurant on university.
It's straight across university to the south from there.
It's just a big office building.
They've kind of converted it.
Top floors are still some office space, but the bottom floor is this Meridian Event Center.
And it's just they did a really nice job.
Mike LaValle, he's a restaurant tour in the area that has other other event venues,
but they did a really nice job with it.
So we're excited.
Jan Jensen will be there as well.
And after the retirement of Lisa Blutter, after Caitlin Clark moves on to the WMBA,
I know a lot of people were tepid.
Is this momentum going to continue?
Well, the fan base certainly has continued to show up.
And Jan has done a nice job.
It hasn't ended the way people wanted the last.
last two years in the NCAA tournament, but the success is coming on the heels.
What do you think about the women's program and the continued momentum?
I'm sure you guys see as well with the eye club of people supporting women's basketball.
Oh, 100%.
And I think the one thing when I think of Jan and what she has continued from Lisa is culture.
I mean, girls want to go play there.
It's like a family.
And you can tell in talking to the student athletes and fans going to games, they just, yeah,
Everyone loves Jan and, yeah, unfortunately, had a really good year.
Didn't end like we wanted it to.
But I think everyone's just real excited about the future.
And I think we can tell and the good luck that she's had in the transfer portal.
And it shows, too, what a good addition of Coach Barrett made on the program.
Gary Dolphins going to emcee it when the coaches, what will they do?
Will they take the stage and do a few minutes, a little bit of a speech?
speech. Yeah, it'll be more of like a Q&A with with Dolph. Also, we always start off our program.
Historically, Polk County I Club has given out these football awards to senior football players.
And we'll start out with that. Kirk will present those. The players, unfortunately, won't be
in attendance. We do have some videos of them. But, but yeah, we essentially, five o'clock, we start
social hour at 5 o'clock. We do dinner at 6 o'clock and then our program will start at 6.30.
We do, you can, if you, for tickets, the best way to go about it is to go to our Facebook page,
Polk County I Club, and there is a link to purchase tickets there. There will be availability.
If you can't get to that and get a ticket the night of, we will have some tickets available.
But I actually just looked this morning and ticket.
sales are going well. Awesome. You got to bring up one other guy because he's going to cry if he doesn't
hear his name called. Oh, Hawkeye, Andy. Is he probably, he's got to be bottom of the totem pole right
in terms of board members. Is that right? He is one of our new members. That is true. But Andy,
Andy is great. He's been a good addition to our board. He really helps out at all of our events and is definitely
Definitely a good addition.
Well, if you need a driver to go anywhere, I mean, he's an over the rolling.
Weiled it down to Houston.
He did, absolutely.
And wheeled it down.
There's a lot more fun than wheeling back.
I bet.
Yes, no doubt about it.
Hey, you mentioned the golf outing real quick.
Wakanda is the scene of this event.
Do you need help promoting this one, or is this one of your bigger events?
It's definitely one of our bigger events.
I mean, it's golf at Wakanda kind of sells itself.
Sure.
hand with the opportunity to get to actually golf with a hockey coach player, former players like
that. Just as an example, like a lot of the, most of the football coaches are there playing.
They don't. I think don't have confirmation for sir, but thank Coach McCollum will be there.
Also, and then some former players, like for example, Riley Moss, he always comes back and
plays in it. But we do have anyone, we do sell out. So we're 30. We kind of have to cap it at
some point with groups playing in fivesomes. So we don't want it to be that long of a day.
So the fivesome would include these quote celebrity. The celebrity, correct. Yep, for sure.
So anyone interested in playing in that event, definitely you can always find my contact information
through our website, Polk iClub.com or on our Facebook page, that's probably the best way.
We do have some sponsorship opportunities, new ones this year available.
So anyone's always feel free to reach out, reach out to me.
How many eye clubs are there in the state?
That is a good question.
And a question I should know the answer of.
We got a year until we see you again.
I do not know.
I do know the ones that are the most active would be ours here in Polk County, Carol
County does a really good job. And historically, they have really good events and good attendance.
Then you get over to Eastern Iowa and Lynn County and Cedar Rapids and Johnson County and Iowa City.
Those are the ones that are from my understanding of the most active.
I think Carroll County is where Ben McCollum put the chairs away last year. Yes. That's what I thought.
You're correct. What a great gesture on his part. Certainly ingratiated himself very quickly with some of the
fans base at that event. Best of luck to you. Great to see again.
Madison, coming up on 13 days from now, May the 6th at the Meridian.
Meridian.
I hadn't heard of it.
New place.
Yeah.

Have you guys figured that out yet?
It is.
I actually, yes, it's, it's a chicken, some sort of a chicken, vegetable, starch.
Sounds good.
Yes.
Sounds good.
Great stuff.
Best of luck to you of Polk County.
