We will take a look back at the matchup against Indiana, an update on the Iowa quarterback, Mark Grunowski, his injury and how impactful that's going to be and how long term it potentially is going to be.
Plus, a look at the pro football focused numbers, PFF grades for this game, who grade out well, and where are there some problem spots with this Hawkeye team?
Well, as I was with you after the game on Saturday, definitely frustrating and a game that I will let slip away.
A ton of opportunities in the game, tons of ones to put this one away.
And frankly, this is going to be one I think that is going to sting and linger for a long time.
Obviously coupled with it being the by week, with Iowa having the open date this week,
they do not match up again until they go to Wisconsin coming up here in a couple of weeks.
Because of that, it makes things even more difficult, just getting ready, get set,
get, you know, get through the pain as a fan of what we're dealing with and what we're going through at this point in time.
In fact, that game against the Badgers, that has been announced.
That will be a 2.30 kickoff.
There are a 6 o'clock matchup, excuse me, 6 o'clock kickoff.
My apologies for Iowa, Wisconsin coming up on October 11.
So I will go to the Madhouse.
Lots of tickets available.
That is a fan base incredibly frustrated.
And don't anticipate you're going to see a whole lot of students in the student section for that one when we get to that.
But plenty of time to get ready for the matchup against the Badgers.
back to what we did looking through this.
And, you know, our second time around,
it's a chance to get past the emotional component of it,
get past what's happening as you're watching the game live
and get back into seeing exactly what you saw.
My first takeaway, and one of the first things on my notes,
was the play of Mark Grinowski.
And yes, obviously the interception early in the game,
off the deflected ball.
I heard Chuck Long on podcast with Tom Kakert mentioned
that that was a play.
that he probably should have got out of, out of,
he saw the pressure coming off that edge.
They were coming out that way, rolling that way,
the deflection leading to the interception.
But after that, Mark Garnowski was nothing short of tremendous.
And as we've gone through the last five years of poor quarterback play for the Hawkeyes,
it's become apparent that, yes, there are issues,
obviously with the offensive style and what they're trying to do.
But there were just so many times that it was a quarterback problem.
And now seeing Mark Gornowski and his maturation with the Iowa program and the growth that we've seen out of him from what he looked like against Albany and even Iowa State to the guy that we saw Saturday against Indiana, it's night and day.
Indiana was making an incredibly difficult for him to get outside the pocket, made it very difficult for him to do really anything with his legs.
And that was the reason they also saw a lot of those windows.
And when he was so sharp and completing those 8, 10, 12-yard routes that were out there.
would have liked to see some shots down the field.
I think there were opportunities down the field in this football game
and rewatching that.
That was another component I definitely think was there
with the pressure that Indiana was doing,
coupled with keeping an eye on,
Grinowski having a spy there,
having some extra defenders up in the pressure,
even in passing downs.
You saw a lot of that.
They just didn't want to let him escape.
I didn't want to give him that kind of opportunity.
But overall, Mark Grunowski is what we hope.
The problem, he's banged up.
We got an injury update coming up for you on Mark Grinowski here a little bit later on on Locked on Hawkeyes.
A couple other takeaways and some of the big plays of the game.
Hank Brown missed terribly.
And that screen pass that was set up absolutely beautiful.
Not only was it going to be good enough to get a first down.
If he puts that throw where it needs to be, there's a real possibility.
That thing goes really deep into Indiana territory and you're setting up a chip shot field goal.
Now already, even if you pick up 8, 10 yards on that play,
which looked like it was blocked beautifully,
that that was going to happen again if Hank Brown was able to put it there.
One thing that I did see, though, was just, I mean, that's the difference of the game.
It'll come down to Drew Stevens being able to kick what would been maybe a little more than an extra point
compared to when he yanks it left like he did.
And people are talking about the laces.
Laces were to the left on that one, didn't get a completely spin,
come on you got to make that kick you're a senior kicker you bet around too long we got to
stop with the excuses here that's a kick that you have to make in that situation if you're kicking
the laces okay but still i just can't have it and another yank and we've seen plenty of those
to this point for drew stevens another component is if you do get the first down on that play
also remember i was going to run the ball three times they're going to set up with indiana
out of timeouts and set them up and you're going to obviously i'll put the pressure on
them, but you can also center the ball or put it on the right hash or wherever Drew Stevens
wanted that football, you were going to be able to do that. I want to talk about Hank Brown.
And when you just look at these stats, they definitely do not look good. I'll mention the bad
pass there and what proved to be maybe the ball game as Iowa could have won that thing and walked
out with a 16-13 victory over Indiana last. That's not the case.
2015, the final. And the Hank Brown numbers, 5 and 13, 48 yards, had the interception.
another deflection, still, I think you saw something out of Hank.
And, you know, somebody I saw brought up C.J. Bethard, and when he had to come into the game
because of an injury to Jake Ruddock early in his career, just how poorly he played against
Wisconsin.
And they were up against it that day against a very good Wisconsin team.
He looked absolutely brutal.
So you don't want to throw the baby out with the bathwater.
I thought you saw a few things, though, from Brown.
You go back to the final throw, fourth and ten.
and didn't like what they were trying to do,
understanding, yes, they needed a touchdown to tie it on that final drive.
Still, a lot of more vertical routes that you wanted to see.
You had all three timeouts.
And yes, you have to press the ball up to field.
But still, there was an opportunity, I think, to do some more things underneath,
some deep ins, you know, some drags, things like that,
where you're able to get the passing game, get him more comfortable.
But the arm talent's definitely there.
I mean, you can definitely see that the ball comes out of his.
his hand, incredibly good.
You go back to the interception, as I mentioned, off the deflection there,
hesitated for a moment, came back to it, and delivered a dart.
Just play wasn't made.
And there were some throws in there.
The throw of anime, two revved up on fourth and ten.
We just sailed that one.
That was there, too.
I mean, he puts that thing on the money.
I think you're seeing enough out of Hank Brown that definitely he needs to be in the
mix next season.
What he'd done is doing, learning, obviously going through this.
I think there's going to be a lot of excitement going forward for Hank Brown.
Also want to give some credit to Kamari Moulton in a day where there weren't a ton of holes there.
Thought he ran incredibly hard.
And that Indiana defense, they're good.
They really are.
And yet, Kamari Moulton was able to turn out some nice runs throughout the course of that one.
He's not Caleb Johnson.
It's going to be rare to have a guy of that kind of quality and what kind of
season he put together a season ago, but I think he saw some good things out of Bolton in the game.
Wasn't a whole lot there for McNeil.
St.
Philips needs to be involved.
Over the defense, you can't come up with enough to say.
And even with as good as the defense played, there were still plays left on the field.
I mean, you go back to the second play from scrimmage for Indiana after the interception early.
That's just too easy.
And he thought the onslaught might be out at that point.
And obviously, we know that's not the way that thing played out.
but a defense was tremendous.
Got to tackle better.
They just do.
And do they have a problem in the middle at the middle linebacker spot?
Jaden Harrell just doesn't look fast enough at the Big Ten level to be able to diagnose
and then make the plays that we've grown accustomed to again over the last five years
with Jack Campbell into Jay Higgins.
You just had guys that made plays.
And Harold's not making the plays certainly even close to the level that we're used to there.
But overall, the defense, I mean, what more can you say, keeping them in that football game?
And finally, one other thing, once again, Kinnick Stadium.
And talking to the different people around our lockdown network
and hearing the different people talk about it.
We know how special it is.
We know how great it is to obviously watch what I was able to do in a big environment.
And certainly was that on Saturday.
The Kinnick crowd kept him in the game.
And the Kittick crowd wield them to an opportunity to win that football game.
And it's credit to you Hawkeye fans.
It's a credit to us in the stands hollering.
at the top of our lungs and doing everything possible,
the configuration of the new end zone,
and just on and on and on.
It's a great environment,
and it's something we should be very lucky that we have here in the state
that we have that kind of environment.
And it's a credit to all of you for making that possible
and making those moments and those opportunities
and making Kinnick, what a special place that it is each and every time.
So a tip of the ball cap to everybody on Saturday.
Let's get into, if the number,
match up with what we saw on the field.
The grades from Pro Football Focus.
PFF grades coming up.
Plus, we've got an update on Mark Grinowski's injury.
We'll do that as we continue.
This is Locked on Hawkeyes.

Those five-star reviews go a long way and help us get in front of more Hawkeye fans.
Number time, let's get into the grades from Pro Football Focus and see exactly if that
matches up with what we saw on the field against Indiana.
So we go first to the offense and what we saw in that one.
talked about Mark Grinowski at the top, and he graded out incredibly well, a 71.3 grade,
including an 81.7, definitely the most dynamic we've seen from Grinowski so far this season,
making throws all over the field.
It didn't have that deep shot out there.
Nothing over 20 yards, but still, he was in control of the offense and was making the plays
all over the field.
For Hank Brown, he grades out with a 51.5 grade overall, not great.
On the other side, we go over to the running backs up next.
And was a little bit surprised by this one.
Kabarie Moulton is 66.5.
I thought maybe it'd be a shade higher than that.
65.8 for Nathan McNeil right on his heels.
And then Terrell Washington Jr. with the 59.4.
One thing also going back and rewatching the game, first play of the game.
I was yelling at my TV right when it was happening.
Trell, Washington Jr., first play the game, you get a yard.
And then the interception right after that, I just, they can't quit them.
I just don't see it right now.
Swiss Army knife, versatile, third downback, sure.
Not seeing much more from Toronto, Washington, Jr.
At this point in time, your top-rated wide receiver was Sam Phillips.
And we've talked about this a ton dating back to the game against UMass.
You just have to use them more.
You can tell that this is a guy that knows the position, knows how to run routes.
Although he's not big by any means of 5'7, he can make plays for them.
And that needs to continue certainly going forward, a 75.
4.5 for him. Up next, Cain Weigin, who grades out with a 65.6. Dayton Howard with a 63.9.
He continues to ascend, had a nice catch over on the sideline. Jacob Gill, know what you're going
to get out of him, 62.1. And then there was KJ. Parker, who had a, I believe, a drop in there, too,
in the game, 52.1 for him. Jumping over to the snap counts. I think that also kind of gives you
an interesting look inside of things. Of course, Hank Brown played the final 18 snaps of the game
after Mark Grunowski's injury.
42 snaps for Moulton, 18 for McNeil, 9 for Washington.
And then over at wide receiver, 49 snaps for Sam Phillips.
He had the most snaps of any wide receiver.
Jacob Gill up next with 40.
How about 39 snaps for Dayton Howard, Weegean with 27,
and then KJ Parker with 20.
Let's jump over to the grades for the tight end and offensive line positions.
Zach Ortworth, not great.
53 grade for him.
Vonnie, he had a 51.7, a Hayden large, very poor, 39.9 for large.
Pass not very good. Pass blocking, not very good. Run blocking, not great either.
And the run blocking for all the tight ends continues to be poor. And then finally the grades
for the offensive line, Trevor Lauk with a 67. He graded out as the top guy,
both in terms of overall grade and the best run blocking grade. Jennings Dunker with the 65.8.
He left for a little bit.
We saw, obviously, the injury of both Stevens,
who graded out of the worst out of run blocking out of the group,
though he did have the highest pass blocking grade there.
Leighton Jones came in, not a great pass blocking grade,
easy for me to say, with a 35.7, a 56 overall.
Same for Piper.
Logan Jones with the 60, Dotsler, with a 62.6.
So a lot of shuffling there.
That also jumps over to the snap counts on the offensive line.
Logan Jones, Jennings Dunker, Cade Peeper,
69 snaps for all of those guys.
Stevens down to 58 because of the injury.
Lout played 57 snaps.
Dostler with 12 and Jones with 11.
That's Leighton Jones with 11 when he came in after the Bo Stevens injury.
Avonimo, he played 50 snaps at tight end at 38 for large and just 13 for Zach Ortworth.
So those are the grades on the offense and the snap counts.
Let's jump over to the defense.
Iowa, the defense was all over the place, making plays.
yet didn't get a whole lot of high grades out of the defensive line.
Brian Allen was your top-ranked guy in the defensive line,
a 68.5 grade for Brian Allen, including a good 74.8 tackle grade from him.
Up next with Jonah Pace, really like what we saw out of the Central Michigan transfer.
Jonah Pace, I really liked what I saw,
and that definitely marries up with the numbers here from Pro Football Focus.
Up next, Heath and Herkitt with a 64.
or Aaron Graves, a 62.6.
His tackle grade is what really hurt him overall.
Mary Weather, a 62.
I don't know if the penalty goes into these grades, but, oh, boy, that penalty.
And it was Tickey Tack.
It was an act job out of Mendoza, and maybe after his career finishes up, he'll be in Hollywood.
Pittman with a 59, 49, poor grade there for Llewellyn.
Same thing.
Tackle grade, very low for Llewellyn and Bryce Hathorne with a 49 grades.
So some struggles there up front on that defensive line.
Let's jump over to the snap count for the defensive line as you had at the top.
Aaron Graves led the way with 60 snaps.
Then the two senior defensive ends, Llewellyn with 54 and 53 for Herkitt.
Pace played 36, 22 for Hawthorne, 16 for Allen,
Maryweather with 11 snaps and Pittman with four.
So that's how things broke down on that front.
We go next to a linebacker, much malign so far this season.
And Jane Harrell, he graded it out very well.
A 72.3, shows you what I know.
72.3.
Not a great tackle grade, though, and that's probably a jumped out to me.
A 44.5 tackle grade brought his number down.
Still a very good, 72 grade before Harold.
The other Jaden, Jane Montgomery, is 71.3.
When he came in, Carson Shire is 69.2.
Good grade on him.
And Rex Roth, the lowest out of the linebackers, with a 63.9 grade for,
Rex Roth. Your snap count in the game. Shire, he went the whole way, 64 snaps out of him.
Harold played 49. Rexroth with 10, more many, most times when they went for three,
and then Montgomery with five snaps in the game. And then we wrap things up when we take a look
at these PFF grades with the defensive back position. Zach Lutmer, of course, had that big
interception. Oh, if he just maybe would have cut back, what can you do?
76.9 for him, excellent numbers there. Great tackle grade, great coverage game.
game, good and pass rush as well as he was coming on the blitz, good one from him.
Good to see a good grade from Xavier Woff.
Of course, had the big hit over on the sideline.
He was very good coming in on those blitz packages and tackled well, according to the numbers from PFF,
a 84.9 tackle grade that led the way for the defensive backs.
Up next, T.J. Hall, 62.1.
I thought he was better than that, which 62, or 60, excuse me, is the average,
a little bit better than average.
I had T.J. Hall a little bit better than that.
A coverage grade, a 62.4, shook my head.
Cohen Etringer is what hurt him in that one.
Of course, had the two fourth down stops that definitely opens up the eyes.
But when you're going through play after play after play, many times paints a different picture.
61 for Deshaun Lee and Jalen Watson, a 31.2, very low grade for Watson,
who played four snaps in the game.
It was Entringer, Hall, Wampa, Lee.
They were out there, all 64 snaps in the game, 60 snaps for Lutmer.
So it definitely shows you that they were relying on those veterans
and the guys that, well, not all of them have a ton of playing experience,
but the guys we kind of thought that they were going to have overall.
Those are the numbers from Pro Football Focus to the matchup with what you saw.
There's some questions in there, but, hey, that's why we do that every single week.
We continue here, Lockdown Hawkeyes, and Mark Grenad.
The Hawkeye is injured.
Plus, a look at the coordinators.
They'll talk to us tomorrow.
We'll talk a little bit about that.
We roll through on a Monday edition of Lockdown Hawkeyes.

Trent, I'm back with you one final time on the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast.
Thanks for being with us and making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day.
Earlier today, an update from Chad Leickeau of the Des Moines Register talking about the injury of Mark Grinowski.
And that is where we're all just kind of, I think, hanging on a little bit seeing what this is going to be.
Leickeau had this to say a good source tells me Mark Gerdowski's injury is trending in the right direction.
as far as severity.
Sounds like Iowa dodged a major bullet,
but there's still some gray area, I'm told.
So don't spike the ball yet.
Not sure if that means he'll be back for Wisconsin or not,
but hopefully it means he won't be done for the year.
Seems like positive news.
That is what we heard from Chab Lysdikau of the Register.
Doesn't sound like it's a season ender,
but knee injury, maybe the same knee that he had ACL surgery back as a freshman on.
and definitely have a concern about that.
Also remember, Mark Grinowski, he was wearing that big brace
at the beginning of the season, something he did that he took it off.
He do wonder about that component to it too.
Still, concerns here.
Hank Brown, probably not ready to even go into a diminished camp randle
and win a game.
Could be wrong.
Wisconsin's not very good.
Still, would love to see Grinowski be able to fight through this,
be healthy, and be able to.
to go. We will probably get more information though on Tuesday as the coordinators will meet with
the media. So we will hear from Tim Lester and Phil Parker. I want to hear from Phil Parker just about
this game plan and what went into what they did against Indiana. So blitz happy. I mean,
it was just so unlike what we're used to seeing from Iowa football and how heavy they were
in the blitz packages and how well it worked until it didn't at the end of the final play
for Indiana or the touchdown scoring play, I should say. They kneeled it.
and took the dumb safety, but that aside.
So you have that part, we'll hear from Phil,
and we'll get some good things we usually do out of Phil Parker,
have to dig a little bit more.
And then Tim Lester, who, he's such a breath of fresh air.
I mean, he's just, he's fun to listen to.
Look, you go back to the beginning when he was finally hired
after that long, drawn-out process of Kirk figuring out who his offensive
coordinator was going to be.
I would love to hear how much Tim Lester able,
how much fingerprints are from other people on this.
We heard about the analysts, you know, Warren Ruggiero coming in from Wake Forest.
Speaking of that, want to hear more about the slow mesh.
We saw it against Iowa State.
We haven't seen it since then.
We can understand against UMass why you're not going to show it there,
but haven't seen it.
Didn't see it against Rutgers, not against Indiana?
Like, is it dead?
Was it a one-time thing?
Is it just not working?
Want to hear more about that component because, you know, you go back and you look at these games
and you lose 20 to 15 to Indiana and you lose 16, 13 to Iowa State.
You still need to score more.
And as we go through the rest of the schedule, and one thing that I've talked about is
I was going to have to score points to win some of these games.
To think that you're going to be able to win in the teens against Oregon, Penn State, USC,
even Nebraska, I think is unlikely.

relevance what's the path to i will putting together and being a team that you know gets to that
seven eight win mark that we kind of anticipate every single year there's still a lot of work to be
had still a lot of work to be done kirk said there's a lot of football in him in front of them
down to seven games we'll see about this squad and we'll continue to break it down as we do each
