Starting point is 00:00:00 Time to look back at Iowa's big win against Minnesota over the weekend, 31-14. We break it down, a deep dive, what was happening in the passing game, and is there any hope that it can turn around? Caleb Johnson's big game was even better the second time through, and Jazzyon Patterson's showing some juice at the number two running back position. All today, Locked on Hawkeyes. You are locked on Hawkeyes. You are Locked on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day.

Starting point is 00:01:01 Download the GameTime app, create an account use code locked on college for 20 dollars off your first pitch purchase we open up today with a look back here my sunday evening week after week during the football season is going back and taking a second look at things now this was also different though it was a road game being up in minnesota which was so great uh being up there with the Hawkeye fans having some fun with the Gopher fans it was it's just what makes a rivalry game great and yes I heard the who hates Iowa chants there was plenty of those that were making their way around both outside of the game and inside the game it still overall was just a great experience of being there
Starting point is 00:01:40 love the stadium and having this game in September as opposed to in November and what we get with Minnesota weather. Definitely that was a positive in this one, but a few things taken away as we watch the game for a second time and getting that look at the TV angle, a couple of things that definitely popped out and things that I think the big question is around still the passing game. Can it get turned around? Is there hope for that? We're going to get into that a little bit more, but we open up with the story of the game and it was the play of Caleb Johnson. Just the chunk yardage plays that he was able to get throughout the course of this football game where he has five runs of over 20 yards. I think seven runs overall of over a dozen yards and those big chunk plays, the ability for him just to gain yards when they weren't there.
Starting point is 00:02:26 But another thing really jumped out. It's something we've talked about a little bit in the past and talk about even two years ago during his freshman campaign. We know in open space, he is special. We know that when he gets that head of steam, when he gets an angle, when he's got a gap to go through, he is absolutely electric. But there were multiple times throughout the course of the game, a couple of times in the second quarter where he was running through people.
Starting point is 00:02:50 He was taking that initial contact and going through and lowering the shoulder and fighting for that extra yard. There was one on a third down play that looked to be stopped and he was able to fight forward and get a first down. And that's the part of Kayla Johnson that makes him the complete running back. That makes him a guy that can be so special. And there's going to be games the rest of the season that proved to be much more difficult running the football than what he saw in this one. And though it was a career high, goes over 200 yards, three touchdowns in the game. Those were all great. And the touchdown runs were incredible. You go through all of them. The one that he went in from just outside the 10 yard line where he had first TJ Washington, who was in there. So
Starting point is 00:03:34 you know, Toronto Washington Jr. is a guy that is just a different kind of skill set than what Iowa has. They used him a wide receiver. They moved him back to running back now, but they can do a lot of different things with them. And his ability as a pass catcher, along with being a running back at the high school level, gives him a very diverse skillset and an ability to use him in a bunch of different ways. And though we haven't really seen him be used, it's the motion, it's the knowledge, it's just doing different things and changing the eyes of the defense. And eventually that's going to come. I think we're going to see some plays this year that are designed to him,
Starting point is 00:04:09 get the ball out in space and do some different things, be it on a jet sweep and end around whatever it may be, because he is a special skillset, but he laid an absolute block. Now he got knocked back on his butt, but he was there delivering the blow. And he was probably giving up 60 pounds on that play. And he went flying backwards, but he was in there. And then he had Kate McNamara running out in front and delivering the blow. And he was probably giving up 60 pounds on that play. And he went flying backwards. But he was in there. And then he had Cade McNamara running out in front and clearing the way for another
Starting point is 00:04:31 touchdown out of Caleb Johnson. I thought that was just a great testament to what Iowa was doing and the way that they were running the football. And so mention KJ. Incredible, right? I mean, Caleb Johnson, you run out of superlatives. You run out of things to say because the guy is just playing at such a high level and taking that immense skill that we all knew that he had and putting it out there.
Starting point is 00:04:53 And after serving his suspension, not sulking, not whining, not leaving, like there's plenty of people in the country would do, put in the work, do the right things, get back in the good graces. And now we're seeing that talent come out and certainly a huge impact to this Iowa football team. Another portion though, that we didn't talk about a ton was the play of Jazzy and Patterson. Jazz Patterson, another guy last year had a big game against Iowa state, had a long run as he was tracked down by TJ Tampa at the end, but had a long run, had a touchdown a little bit later on. He was excellent there, but just kind of fell out of favor. Just didn't have a whole lot. And they went a whole lot with LaShawn Williams a year ago in the running game. He turned out to be kind of your ace number one last season. Another guy,
Starting point is 00:05:38 I mean, he's fourth on the depth chart, fourth on the depth chart, a guy from Florida, another one that would have been incredibly easy for him to tuck his tail and leave. This shows you the Iowa football program. This shows you what it means and the culture that Kirk Ferentz built. Yes, there are plenty of things that annoy us. There are things that are frustrated. It's not to make everything out to be sunshine and rainbows because it isn't. But when you build that kind of culture and you're able to keep those kind of players around and happy, credit to Liddell Betts, the running back coach, keeping these guys engaged, keeping them in there and doing it with only five guys that probably feel like they should be getting touches. And
Starting point is 00:06:19 you take a guy from a year ago that was your starter, that you don't win the Wisconsin game without LeSean, who is banged up right now.ari molten doesn't play although he traveled with the team concussion a protocol that he was going through a week ago i mean all these different games we mentioned tj washington another one probably feels like he should be out there a little bit more and yet here they are doing the things caleb johnson afterwards talking about his offensive line and doing that week after week after week, giving credit to the big guys up front. That's what you need to do as a running back. And that is certainly playing out. So we have all these things kind of coming together,
Starting point is 00:06:53 but have to give credit to Jazzy on Patterson and what he was able to do. And he was just a step away from a couple. Look, he doesn't got the same speed that Caleb Johnson does in the open space. He's not that kind of running back. But boy, he runs hard. He runs tough. He's a violent runner of the football. And you put that battering ram back there with Caleb Johnson, you can run the ball 39 times between the two.
Starting point is 00:07:15 Speaking of that, how about this number? Just one negative run play out of your top two running backs. Just one that went backwards. How many times over the last four, five, six years have we seen Iowa in the second and 12? What have we seen Iowa third and 11? Too many times. Just too many times that you're already starting up behind the sticks. This offense is not fixed. This offense hasn't figured it all out. There's still work to be done. But when you just start at that, we are not going backwards. It seems simple, not always the case. To be able to
Starting point is 00:07:51 do that says both about the running game and of course the offensive lineman that I thought played really, really well. A couple other news and notes and a couple other plays that I want to get into here and talk a little bit more. Defensively, we didn't talk a ton in the instant reaction Saturday night about Deshaun Lee and what we saw from him going out there for TJ Hall. I was a little bit surprised seeing the snap count from pro football focus that TJ Hall wasn't out there at all, but made the mistakes in the game against Troy,
Starting point is 00:08:20 gave up one, two touchdowns, depending on who you talk to. There's some people that say that that was supposed to be Quinn Schulte on the second one. Regardless, he made mistakes, and he's made a few mistakes out there. And this, again, shows you that culture. Deshaun Lee lost a job in August camp. He was a guy that started half the season for them a year ago, a guy that was put in an incredibly difficult spot. Jamari Harris was suspended the first two games a year ago.
Starting point is 00:08:44 What does he do? He steps in there. I thought he quitted himself really well last year as a freshman. He loses the starting gig this year. Doesn't sulk, does the work, and he's out there as a starter once again. He was a guy that stepped in
Starting point is 00:08:56 for Cooper Dijon a year ago. He's a guy that stepped in for Jamari Harris at the beginning of the season. He has been there, and now he has stepped in for TJ Hall, and he played, I thought, at a really high level. Game over pass out there that's gonna happen it was a well-caught ball also from the minnesota kid that came down with that one but overall i thought he was really
Starting point is 00:09:13 solid out there one of the top tacklers on the team with eight in the football game good to see out there after the game i thought it was awesome uh sticking around watching them go over and get floyd the best rivalry trophy in college football and it's not close but the team not the mad dash that you see where as soon as the clock hits zeros or the final horn goes off or even the clock's running out they see everybody just sprinting over on their own going no not iowa They see everybody just sprinting over on their own going, no, not Iowa. They all got together. They swarmed together, went over there, and then the last 15, 20 yards,
Starting point is 00:09:53 yeah, there was a mad rush over to get Floyd and get him up there. But to see Y.A. Black be one of the first guys there, a Minnesota native, a guy that this game obviously meant a ton to him, in the locker room afterwards, seeing the phone call to Cooper DeJean, that was really cool. Got some more news and notes here. And the big question that still remains, can this passing game be fixed? We're going to get into that. Got some more notes from the game and a look at Iowa's statistical profile.
Starting point is 00:10:23 Some numbers that might surprise you with this Iowa football team as we sit here a third of the way through the season. Yeah, a third of the way. Man, it goes fast. But here we are. We'll talk about that as we sit here a third of the way through the season. Yeah, a third of the way. Man, it goes fast, but here we are. We'll talk about that as we continue. This is Locked on Hawkeyes. Today's episode of the Locked on Hawkeyes podcast is brought to you by FanDuel. Hey, NFL fans, you can start the season with a big return on FanDuel, America's number one sportsbook.

It's an incredible tool to use. If you love live betting, FanDuel has you covered. You'll get started with $200 in bonus bets guaranteed when you place your first $5 bet. That's right. $200 in bonus bets guaranteed when you place your first $5 bet. Iowa this week is off. So we don't have any Hawkeye lines to, excuse me, to take a look at this week at FanDuel, but they got you covered. The lines are already out for week four of the NFL starting Thursday night
Starting point is 00:11:24 with the Cowboys going to the Giants. Dallas favored by four and a half. You're a Bears fan like me. Sorry. The Bears are favored by a field goal against that banged up Rams team. Maybe the surprise of the NFL, the Minnesota Vikings are your flavor. They go to Green Bay this week. The Packers, a two and a half point favorite in that one.
Starting point is 00:11:42 They got you covered with that and a whole lot more over at FanDuel. Again, $200 in bonus bets guaranteed when you place your first $5 bet. That's FanDuel.com, FanDuel.com to download America's number one sports book. Trent Conant back with you once again on the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast. Thanks for making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day. So making our way through some news and notes after our second watch of the Iowa football game. This is what we do in the Monday reaction show. Take a second look at things, see what pop out.
Starting point is 00:12:16 A few other notes that I want to get into in this one. A couple of statistical numbers I thought were interesting. We're going to take a look at the overall stats for this Iowa, including I think some surprises there and also a sense of optimism about what this team still can accomplish this season. A 7-15 against Minnesota on third downs, coupled with three touchdowns and three red zone trips. That is something that is winning numbers for Iowa. Brendan Sullivan has been great in that role. It's added an extra element to what they're doing inside, really the 10-yard line that they've been using this almost exclusively.
Starting point is 00:12:54 When they get to that area, the goal-to-go situation, Iowa's been so much better. Now five for five, four touchdowns. Not just scoring, scoring touchdowns in the red zone, something that the predecessor struggled with mightily over his last couple of years, those red zone scoring chances had not been the case here for Iowa. They've been really good in that one. A question still remains. And though we saw two weeks ago in the victory against Troy, that defensive line really step up. Brian Allen was outstanding in that football game.
Starting point is 00:13:22 You saw Maxwell and do some good things along with Ethan Hercut. They were really showing that depth that has been built on the defensive line. And they are a solid seven deep at that defensive line, but not a whole lot of impactful plays. Not a whole lot of getting the quarterback where Max Brosmer was back a whole lot to pass. They just were not getting there. Because of that, I'd like to see Brian Allen a little bit more. We'll have the numbers tomorrow from Pro Football Focus and take a deeper look at some of those numbers. I believe off the top of my head, 21 was the number of snaps that he had in the game if memory serves. So that's a guy that definitely needs to be out there a little bit more. Another question, defensive line still needs to continue to get better, not against a run,
Starting point is 00:14:09 but really getting to the quarterback and even teams that are getting it out quickly. You have to be more impactful, get your hands up more, more deflections. Those kinds of things are going to go a long way for this defense going from where it is right now. Very good. And getting back to that upper, upper level in the elite level of college football. Caleb Brown, just one snap in the football game. Wasn't a wide receiver game. This was a running game. We saw that. And as Iowa pulled away, you can anticipate that.
Starting point is 00:14:31 We just need to see him out there more. We just have to see Caleb Brown. He is too dynamic. We saw that last season when he had Deacon Hills as quarterback over the final couple games of the year. Need to find a way to get him more involved. He's just too talented. And Iowa does not have the depth at the wide receiver group
Starting point is 00:14:48 that he's only out there playing one snap. You had Dayton Howard out there. He played a bunch of snaps in the game. We saw Jared Bowie out there. Need to get more out of Caleb Brown, and maybe it's going to start in the next matchup against his former school, Ohio State. And one final note I found interesting,
Starting point is 00:15:04 speaking of those goal line situations and when we saw Brendan Sullivan come into the game, some of the short yardage situations where they brought Kate Pieper into the game as an extra offensive lineman. They played the same offensive line left to right all the way through. There was no rotation. We did not see any rotation out of your starting five, which I'm very happy to see. That's usually what we get out of Iowa. There's some tweaking at the beginning of the season, but then once they settle on things, as long as everybody's healthy, they're going to go with that.
Starting point is 00:15:32 And they went with that outside of Peeper coming in, not for anybody individually, just being an extra lineman out there on the field for that. Good to see. Cade Peeper, a little bit undersized. I mean, he's still got some more weight to gain, and certainly for a guy that's going to be an interior player, either a center or a guard, likely looks like he's going to be the heir apparent to Logan Jones at the center
Starting point is 00:15:52 position. At least that's the way things seem to be trending at this moment in time, but I found that one interesting as well. Speaking of the Ohio State game, it has been announced it is a 2.30 kickoff on CBS, Hawkeyes and the Buckeyes from Columbus coming up in a couple of weeks. So big national stage once again. Ohio State is absolutely loaded. This is an incredibly talented team. They are the best team that money can buy, and that's not a knock like it once was in college athletics. It is reality. They went out and spent and spent and spent some more. And it's not just what Ryan Day's teams have been about what they are and their ability to be able to do whatever they want offensively. This team defensively is also an elite defensive teams.
Starting point is 00:16:37 They got playmakers all over the field. It's going to be an incredibly difficult challenge for Iowa to measure up to this Ohio State team. Then you get the bye week to prepare, like that angle to it, and we'll see what they can unleash. And we'll talk about unleashing the passing game coming up here in just a moment. Finally, one more for you. Speaking of the Ohio State game, we know now that that is going to be a 2.30 kickoff for that one. Also, because I get this question all the time. I mean, people, I think there's going to be about 90,000 people at the Iowa Washington game coming up in a few weeks, because boy, the number of questions that we get on that one are just through the roof. So no TV
Starting point is 00:17:15 designation at this point in time that has not been announced. It will not be announced at earliest until next week, next weekend and into Monday. We will not find out officially that's what it is. So here's the slate though this week in the Big Ten. There's a Friday night game, that doesn't matter, Northwestern at Maryland if you're wondering, the Iowa-Washington game in Kinnick Stadium. The other big games though of that week, Penn State goes to USC, Ohio State goes to Oregon. Well, think of where the location of both of those are. They're on the West Coast, LA and Eugene. They're not putting either of those games
Starting point is 00:17:50 at the 11 a.m. Central Time kickoff, the big noon kickoff on Fox. They're not starting those games at nine o'clock Pacific. So what's Fox going to select that week? What else is out there that they could potentially go that week? They have the contract with the Big 12. They could go that week. What else is out there that they could potentially go that week? They have the contract with the Big 12. They could go that direction, but here's the matchups there. Arizona at BYU, again, BYU, you'd be talking about at 10 a.m. a kickoff there. K-State Colorado, same thing,
Starting point is 00:18:19 in the Mountain Time Zone. Cincinnati UCF, doesn't seem like a big noon kickoff to me. zone. Cincinnati UCF, doesn't seem like a big noon kickoff to me. Iowa State at West Virginia, probably not. West Virginia already sitting with a couple of losses, probably not going to get there either. So you go back to the Big Ten slate. Other games going on that week. Purdue at Illinois, Purdue's awful. That's not going to happen. Minnesota's at UCLA. We already talked about the West Coast. Wisconsin, Rutgers. Boy, that'd be a stretch. With what we've seen out of Wisconsin. Rutgers is undefeated, and they still might be racking up victories until then. As the next couple of weeks, they got Washington, Nebraska
Starting point is 00:18:57 coming up their next two weeks before that one. Potentially, it's not a lock, but it's a strong feeling. This is going to be Iowa, Washington, 11 a.m. kickoff central time in Kinnick Stadium for that one coming up on October 12th. Like I said, it's not set in stone, but when you kind of go through the ramifications, you take a look at the matchups, I think there is a real possibility that will be the case.
Starting point is 00:19:22 Washington, by the way, is 3-1. They got the win over the weekend against Northwestern, just had that loss to Washington State a couple of weeks ago. Before I mentioned Rutgers for them, then Michigan after that. And if the Huskies are suddenly sitting at 5-1, Iowa, even after a loss to Ohio State, should be a good matchup there. And I know people would like a later kickoff, especially for as many people seem to be going to watch the team that played for a national championship a year ago. That's something there.
Starting point is 00:19:48 Mention the numbers. All right, let's get into these. I think these are really interesting numbers about where Iowa is statistically in college football. Right now, total offense, 73. I think that was a realistic number coming into the season. Top 80 in the country. If they could do that, you'd be in good shape.
Starting point is 00:20:06 And there's still work to do. The defenses are going to get more difficult from here on out for almost every single week that they see, starting with Ohio State. After that, Washington, even with all the guys that departed off that program, they're still playing at a high level. But still, 73rd, solid. That's good for Iowa and certainly the way that they're playing.
Starting point is 00:20:24 The rush offense, though, 11th in the country. Yeah, now you're working. Averaging over 250 yards on the ground per game. Passing offense, as you can imagine, is not very good. 122nd in the country with 147 yards per game. Scoring offense, though, 52nd. We'll take that. Total defense is 26.
Starting point is 00:20:43 Rush defense has been great fourth in the country and rush defense giving up just 62 yards per game pass defense 73rd in the country need to tie that one up a little bit more turnover margin greg ferentz loves the turnover margin 16th in the country in that category third down defense 18th in the country fourth down defense they are 25th in the country red zone offense improving up to 67 after going for five for five though the last couple of weeks boy what was it uh after the iowa state game had to be really really down there here's a weird one though red zone defense tied for last well it's 110th but there's 22 teams that are tied as they've given up a red zone score every time down.
Starting point is 00:21:26 Let's get an interception right down there. Let's get a pick. Let's get something like that to change it. Net putting 74th. Improving, though. As we talked about in the Instant Reaction podcast, Reese Dakin had his best game in a Hawkeye uniform in his fourth timeout. Punt returns his 81st in the country, but I think we all know,
Starting point is 00:21:44 Caden Weijin, there's going to be something that's going to pop out of him. Iowa 12th in the country but i think we all know kate and weijin there's gonna be something that's gonna pop out of him i would 12th in the country and kickoff returns uh that one really surprised me just because we haven't seen the touchdown all the way back that would usually improve those kind of numbers how about this fewest penalties per game i will lead the country fewest penalty yards per game fourth in the country and 14th in time of possession. These are numbers that are winning yet there's room for improvement, including in the passing game. So as we went back and watched the game, what did we see from the passing routes? What I was trying to do and the way that this team can open it up even more offensively.
Starting point is 00:22:24 We'll talk about that one as we continue on. This is Locked on Hawkeyes. Thanks for making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day. As we wrap things up here after our look back at the Iowa victory against Minnesota, one more thing to talk about, and it's the biggest question that is still out there about this Iowa football team. Can they crank up what they're doing in the passing game? Saturday, Cade
Starting point is 00:24:25 McNamara was not good. He was not good for the standards, I think, that a lot of people have for him. There's the hope that he can still get this turned around. You still see some things, though. He was not helped out by his pass catchers on Saturday night. There were dropped balls. There were guys that looked to be a little bit out of rhythm, but he also missed throws and he can't afford that. He still has to be able to go through them. But one thing I wanted to look at, and it's difficult, we don't get the all 22 film, at least I don't. If you do, you got to link pass it along to me. You got to hook up. I would love to be able to go through the all 22 and see what we're seeing at that angle. But without it, what you do see though, is there are
Starting point is 00:25:06 guys that are going up the field. This is not that everything is just so condensed forward that there's no shots to be taken down the field. The problem is they're covered up. And then going back and watching Minnesota, they kept their safeties incredibly deep. And you would figure in a game where you're getting gashed on the ground as the Hawkeyes were doing to the Gophers, that you were going to see those safeties creep up a whole lot more. We didn't see eight man boxes. We didn't see a lot of seven man boxes out there. And even as Iowa played a ton with two tight ends, that was one thing that was very surprising.
Starting point is 00:25:37 Caleb Johnson was able to do it. I think also a reason for that is they wanted those safeties to have the ability to try to cut down on Caleb Johnson and at least get an angle. But as we saw Caleb Johnson, your angle doesn't matter. And if you don't have the right one, you're going to be in trouble against number two. So they weren't taking away some of the deep opportunities that were there. I did see a few instances of guys that were going up the field, a couple of seam routes, a couple of plays to Vander Zee up the sideline. So it's not that they're completely out of the route tree. They were just more taken away by Minnesota. And that was part of their game plan that worked certainly during the second quarter
Starting point is 00:26:14 of the football game when Iowa couldn't get much of anything going on. But overall, Iowa played in a phone booth was the difference there. I maintain the one thing every day, as you know, I've said it, if I was still going to hit the heights that I think they can. And I do believe that this team still can win double digit games this year, that this team can be in contention for a college football playoff berth,
Starting point is 00:26:36 even with the loss to Iowa State and a likely loss against Ohio State. Now that means running the table afterwards. That means they can't afford any more losses this season if it plays out in that fashion. But That means they can't afford any more losses this season if it plays out in that fashion. But I think they can get there. And they're going to get there with Cade McNamara. Brandon Sullivan is a nice change of pace guy. He's great to have a competent backup
Starting point is 00:26:54 quarterback. But if you think that this quarterback in Sullivan is a guy that's suddenly going to cure the deep passing woes of this football team, just not reality. It wasn't his game at Northwestern. It's not his game here. Hearing some people that have been in practices say that the gap is still big between those guys throwing the football down the field. He's accurate, like McNamara can be accurate, and they're still upside with Kay McNamara. I still think we haven't seen his best football in a Hawkeye uniform yet.
Starting point is 00:27:24 Coming off the injuries that he has had, making his way back, getting that confidence back, I think that's another great thing that you're going to see from him. Is it going to be good enough? We don't know. Is there another level that he can still hit? We hope so. We will see. Another week now of preparation, a bye week. Use it wisely. There are elements to this game.
Starting point is 00:27:47 Caleb Brown being involved would go a long way. Caden Legion, getting him involved, I think would go a long way. Getting those guys with some speed, doing some different things. Maybe this is the time that we see TJ Washington get some more opportunities. It's going to be out there. And it's going to be incredibly difficult to do it against Ohio State. But you know what? Go back to the last time they came to Kenne.
Starting point is 00:28:08 They didn't really give them a shot. We know what happened. Crazy things happen in college football. I'm not saying. You just never know.
