Starting point is 00:00:00 Riley Moss speaks on why he's coming back to Iowa for a final year. Real Woods going to be stepping on the mat as a Hawkeye next season and Logan Lee's trip to Ecuador, all that coming up right after this. Locked on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. Welcome back, Hawkeye Nation, to another episode of the Locked On Hawkeyes podcast, your daily podcast covering your Iowa Hawkeyes on the Locked On Podcast Network. As always, I'm your host, Wright Hillpiper, and before we get started here, I want to
Starting point is 00:00:50 thank you all for making the Locked On Hawkeyes podcast your first listen every single day. You can find the Locked On Hawkeyes podcast for free wherever you get your podcasts, and also on YouTube by searching Locked On Hawkeyes. So we're going to start out with today with today's biggest story. Riley Moss finally breaking the silence on why he decided to come back to Iowa for one more year. As you know, Riley Moss last season was named Big Ten Conference Tatum Woodson defensive back of the year, regardless of the fact that three and a half games due to his knee injury,
Starting point is 00:01:24 back in the year, regardless of the fact that he had three and a half games due to his knee injury. Riley Moss decided back in January that he was going to return for his fifth year of eligibility with the Hawkeyes. He said, quote, when I'm dead in the grave, I'm not bringing the money with me. I'm bringing the memories. The money will always be there for me. The NFL will always be there for me. And I really love this quote because it really speaks volumes about his love for the game and the fact that he may, maybe, maybe, he just is not ready for, quote, the beast that the NFL is, as he said. And I could be completely wrong. Who knows?
Starting point is 00:02:00 Obviously his love for the game is there, and that has shown throughout the last four years that he's been with the Hawkeyes, and I'm really, really happy to say that he is coming back. Obviously, we've known that for a while, but he has finally broken the silence on why he is coming back. He was asked in an interview in regards to whether or not the loss to Kentucky in the Citrus Bowl
Starting point is 00:02:22 or the loss to Michigan in the Big Ten had anything to do with his decision. And he said, quote, it had no real effect on my decision. So that's great. Obviously, those kinds of things to the side, and he's really just doing what's best for him. And that's great to see. Moss and his fellow senior teammate, him and that's great to see uh moss and his fellow senior teammate jack corner stayed up apparently apparently he said that they stayed up until 1 30 a.m on new year's eve the night before the citrus bowl talking about whether or not they wanted to stay in iowa or if they were going to decide to take a crack at the nfl and they decided that they wanted to do what was best for themselves and not follow people's expectations. And Moss said it was supposed to be a selfish decision. Obviously, Corner decided to go ahead and take a crack at the NFL.
Starting point is 00:03:15 He will be missed, obviously. But Moss is going to be staying behind, and that is a great feeling. Moss feels that both he and Corner made the right decision for themselves. It was the hardest decision of my entire life, which I mean, obviously you get decisions like that sometimes in life where you're like, well, you know, should I do this? Should I do this? Should I do this? And I don't think that Moss was obviously doing this for anybody else but himself. He said, you know, this is supposed to be a selfish decision, and he wants to do what's best for himself.
Starting point is 00:03:50 And he's trying basically right now to just cut out all the noise and do what's right for him. So maybe he thinks he needs that extra year to kind of develop himself a little bit more. Like I said, he said that, you know, the money is always going to be there. The NFL is always going to be there. But it's these memories that he's creating at the University of Iowa with this, that he really wants to, you know, cement. Now, obviously he's cemented his legacy as one of, if not the best defensive player that has ever come through the University of Iowa football team. And, I mean, I have zero to say other than that I completely agree with that.
Starting point is 00:04:30 He has been dominant every time he has stepped out on the field. Obviously, with that Tatum Woodson defensive back of the year award that he was given, it's great to see that he is going to be coming back and I cannot wait to see what he's going to be able to do next year. He was asked in that same interview how he felt he would do at the NFL Combine and I have
Starting point is 00:04:56 my own opinions about this too. Obviously I've thought about being a football player in high school. I always thought about how I would do at the NFL Combine. And Moss said, if you give me three days to run for the 40, it's going to be awesome. That was the only reason I was kind of excited to leave, to see what I could run in the 40, which is hilarious. And I mean, obviously, that's not the only thing that he thought about.
Starting point is 00:05:23 But you may know Moss was a star track athlete at Ankeny Centennial in high school. And I've seen the film from him running track in high school. And he was good. He was real good on that Ankeny Centennial team when he was in high school. And honestly, I would have been very curious to see what, you know, what he would have performed like at the combine, not only in the 40, but everything else. I think that he would have done tremendously well at the combine if he decided to go.
Starting point is 00:05:56 You know, whether or not he wants to still pursue that, you know, after he does get done in Iowa, I think he will try to go for the NFL after he, you know, gets done in Iowa. Obviously, he has the ability to do that, and I think that he has the talent to do that. So, you know, maybe he'll decide to do that. Maybe after he gets done with this final year at Iowa, he'll just decide that he wants to be done with football for good. But obviously only time will tell.
Starting point is 00:06:29 So it was great to see that he finally broke the silence after a couple of months of not really saying anything, not really getting out into the media and talking about why he decided to come back. We all knew that he was going to, but nobody really necessarily knew why. So it's great to see that he's finally broken that silence. Right after this, we are going to talk about Real Woods coming onto the mat for Iowa as a Hawkeye. Finally, finally, finally going to be able to see him in a Hawkeye singlet. Just before that, though, I want to talk to you about Bilt Bar. Yes, Bilt Bar.
Starting point is 00:07:10 This is that time of year where I've pretty much given up on all of my New Year's resolutions. Not this year. Not this year. I'm sticking to my resolution to eat right thanks to Bilt Bar. It almost feels like it's not even a resolution because they are so, so good. And you have got to try the Puffs. Oh, they're so good. If you haven't, you're missing out on one of Built Bar's best tasting bars.
Starting point is 00:07:33 Puffs are the first ever protein-infused marshmallow. They're fluffy. They're delicious. It's not just a protein bar. It's a treat. It's almost like eating a dessert, and they're covered in 100% real chocolate. Puffs are a fan favorite. Some incredible flavors. They've got a cinnamon churro, coconut marshmallow, banana tree pie. They are so, so good. They are going to be your new favorite, I promise you. And all Built Bars are covered in 100% real chocolate. Yes, the Puffs included,
Starting point is 00:08:01 100% real chocolate, low calorie, high in protein. You can replace your candy bars with these. You can replace your protein shakes with these. They are much, much better. A typical candy bar that you eat on a day-to-day basis, like a Snicker or a Twix, can be anywhere from 200 to 300 calories. Okay, Built Bars, 130 calories, 4 grams of sugar, 4 grams of carbs, 17 grams of protein. Absolutely amazing. Go to BuiltBar.com and scroll down the macros chart.
Starting point is 00:08:32 You'll be blown away. Once again, high in protein, low in calories, high in fiber, low in carbs. And they have all new flavors, mint brownie, coconut almond, and for this month, new for this month, white chocolate cookies and cream. They're all delicious. All new flavors coming out all the time. So go to Built Bar, go to Built.com, use the promo code LOCKED15 to get 15% off your order. Once again, that promo code is LOCKED15, that's L-O-C-K-E-D 15 for 15% off at BuiltBar.com. All right.
Starting point is 00:09:12 Raul Woods. Are you kidding me? One of the greatest college wrestlers I forgot the chance to see. An all-American wrestler at Stanford is transferring to Iowa to finish his college wrestling career. He's wrestled at 141 his entire career, including his redshirt freshman season, and he has two years of eligibility left. He said in an Instagram post, today begins a new chapter. While I am very excited to pursue my last two years of eligibility as a Hawkeye, I can't help but think of all the people and memories that have made my Stanford experience special. Woods plans to continue wrestling at 141.
Starting point is 00:09:49 He will replace Jaden Ironman, who no longer has eligibility for the Hawkeyes. His eligibility expired. Once again, another great wrestler that has come through the Iowa program. And let me tell you, the 141 weight class is going to be wide open this year. Wide open. The top three finishers at the NCAA championship this year, Nick Lee, Kazem Clark, Sebastian Rivera, all graduating. This class nationally is going to be wide open for the rest of this season. And I am so, so excited to see
Starting point is 00:10:25 what Real Woods is going to be able to do on the mat as a Hawkeye. I have no doubt that he is going to be a standout wrestler and be absolutely fantastic against all of these other three All-Americans that he will be joining on the Hawkeyes roster, including Spencer Lee at 125.
Starting point is 00:10:43 Granted that he comes back. I do believe that he will after going through those knee surgeries. Jacob Blum at 197. And Tony Cassiope, heavyweight. All three All-Americans that are already on Iowa's roster that Woods will be joining. Woods wrestled for four years at Stanford. Three-time NCAA qualifier. He has two Pac-12 titles to his name.
Starting point is 00:11:06 three-time NCAA qualifier. He has two Pac-12 titles to his name and was on the roster for that 2019 Pac-12 championship team at Stanford. So you know he's good. You already know he's going to be good coming into this. He's compiled a 42-8 overall record in the last four years, and all eight of those losses have come to former, well not former, but All-Americans. All eight. These last eight times in four years. And they've been to, all of them have been to All-Americans. All-Americans, excuse me. Woods chose Iowa over Penn State, Michigan, and Oklahoma State.
Starting point is 00:11:45 As you know, Iowa finished in third place at this year's NCAA championship behind Michigan and Penn State. And then obviously Oklahoma State, another great program that was looking into the possibility of getting Woods to go and wrestle as a cowboy. But obviously he chose Iowa over all three of those, which Michigan, stellar wrestling program they have over there. I have been an avid wrestler since I was in elementary school. I know this program. I know Penn State.
Starting point is 00:12:08 Penn State has been good for a long time. Michigan has been good over the last couple of years, and Oklahoma State has always been good. Ultimately, he did decide to come to Iowa over that. So the predicted lineup for the upcoming season, 125 is going to be Spencer May. No doubt about it. I mean, Drake Ayala, he's good. He's definitely good, but he's young. Okay. I personally, I go to Iowa Central here in
Starting point is 00:12:33 Fort Dodge. That's where Drake Ayala is from. He wrestled at Fort Dodge Public. I've gotten the chance to see him wrestle in high school at the state tournament. He's a good, good, sound wrestler, but you can't deny spencer lee spencer lee is one of the best wrestlers to go through the university of iowa wrestling program and he has been built up over the last few years by brands much cementing him in that 125 spot granted that he does come back which again again, I believe that he will. After those two surgeries, he's been dealing with injuries for a very long time.
Starting point is 00:13:10 As you know, he wrestled at the NCAA Championships, went on record saying no ACLs, which, I mean, congrats to him, hats off to him, but hopefully he can come back and be as healthy as he can be for the upcoming season. 133, Cullivan Shriver. No real debate there. 141 is going to be Real Woods once again. Will be taking over for Jaden Ironman, who no longer has eligibility.
Starting point is 00:13:36 149, Max Murin. 157, Kobe Sebrecht. 165, Patrick Kennedy, 174. Nelson Brands, 184. Abe Asad, no question there at all. 197. Jacob Warner and heavyweight Tony Cassiope. Obviously, I don't see – that's personally, once again,
Starting point is 00:13:58 that's just my opinion on what the starting lineup is going to be. But I don't see – I mean, unless Drake Ayala can make leaps and bounds in the offseason until he gets to the point where he is as good as Lee, again, I don't think that that will necessarily happen. But if he can kind of prove himself, get to that point where he's not making, you know, the little fundamental mistakes. If he's going to be able to take over for Spencer Lee, I don't think that'll happen. But after this year, I think Ayala definitely will be cemented as that 125 starter for the Hawkeyes. Obviously, I'm talking about 125 a little bit more than all the other
Starting point is 00:14:42 weight classes, but that place has got a special classes, but that weight class has a special place in my heart, that 125 weight class. So before we get into the story of the day, yes, story of the day, I have a story for you guys. I want to talk about BetOnline. Starting point is 00:15:28 BetOnline, where the game starts. Okay, so the story of the day. As you know, Logan Lee, great, great defensive lineman for the Hawkeyes. He's been an absolute stud the last few years. It's great to see that he has really shown what he can do on that defensive side of the ball. If you're a diehard Hawkeyes fan, then you probably know that back in December, Iowa took their trip to Orlando for the Citrus Bowl. Defensive lineman Logan Lee proposed to his girlfriend of five years. So first of all, congratulations to him. I've seen the pictures on Twitter.
Starting point is 00:16:07 I've seen them everywhere. They're beautiful, absolutely amazing. Congratulations to Logan Lee on his engagement. While planning for the wedding during the current offseason, Logan Lee has also been a major part of the Iowa Athletes in Action program, which is a face-to-based program at the University of Iowa. If you don't know, they go around, they go to these different countries, they go on mission
Starting point is 00:16:30 trips, and they kind of preach their faith and kind of help people learn about the Bible and learn about God and all that sort of thing. So recently, Lee, as well as a dozen other athletes, took a trip to Ecuador with the program to install water filters in a small village that did not have access to clean running water. While delivering their message about the Christian, Lee, as well as the other athletes, were able to deliver water filters to 86 different families that were in need. That's absolutely insane to me. 86 different families that were in need. That's absolutely insane to me. 86 different families? That's crazy. 86 different families in this little village that didn't have clean running water.
Starting point is 00:17:16 Three other Iowa football players joined me on this trip, including Monty Potabum, Desmond Hudson, who I know, I know, he isn't a Hawkeye anymore. He transferred to UNI, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, whatever. He still went on the trip, which is great to see. I'm glad to see that he decided to go ahead and go on that trip, regardless of whether he's playing for UNI or whatever. It doesn't matter.
Starting point is 00:17:40 As well as Kyler Fisher. So in an article written by the Gazette, as well as Kyler Fisher. So in an article written by the Gazette, Lee noted that these water filters have the ability to filter up to 1,000 liters of water per day, which is crazy to me. That's a lot of water. It's about the equivalent.
Starting point is 00:17:56 I did the math. I did the math. Yes, I can do math. I did the math, and it's about three bathtubs full. Lee went on record saying that a lot of tears shed the day that they left. And then it was really touching how they were able to see the impact that they had on that village. I don't know exactly where in Ecuador it was at. All I know is that it was a small village that they decided to go to preach their word, preach their faith, and deliver these water filters, which is great. Lee also said that
Starting point is 00:18:27 he was able to, you know, preach his faith and his word to a bunch of different people. I think he said 33 or 34 people had accepted, you know, accepted the faith and accepted the word of God, which is great to see. I'm glad to see the programs like that. As a of God, which is great to see. I'm glad to see the programs like that. As a Christian myself, it's good to see that there are programs out there like that, especially in our beautiful state of Iowa. So that's going to do it for today.
Starting point is 00:18:59 Tomorrow, next week, I do have a little bit of information. I have secured a couple of guys that I know that are going to be coming on the podcast to talk with me about Iowa sports. One is going to be later on down the summer. Great guy. His name is Austin Hall, the biggest Iowa football fan that I've ever met in my entire life. Guy knows more about Iowa football than anybody else I've ever met, maybe other than my uncle Andrew. Obviously, he is well-informed. And then a buddy of mine that I went to high school with, his name is Grant Hall. He is a journalism student over at the University of Iowa, and he will be coming on here at some point to talk about Iowa basketball. He is very, very knowledgeable, played basketball in high school,
Starting point is 00:19:47 loves basketball. Absolutely fantastic that we're going to be able to, you know, have him on the podcast. I can't wait for that. I can't wait to have, excuse me, Austin Hall, not related, by the way. Can't wait to have those guys on the podcast. Like I said, Austin will be on the podcast later this summer, probably mid to late
Starting point is 00:20:05 July. You know, when football kind of gets back into the swing of things, love to get his opinion on quite a few things. And then we may have Grant on a couple of times throughout the summer, just kind of depends on his schedule. He's going to be very busy as well. I know how it is as a journalism student. I know that workload can be tough. But regardless, as I said, I'm really excited to see those guys come on. And then obviously, LaShawn Daniels is going to be joining us Monday as my co-host. He will be on on Mondays and Fridays from now on, starting on Mondays. Once again, Monday is when we are going to start the video side of things again. So the
Starting point is 00:20:46 podcast will be posted on YouTube. Just trying to get through the whole transition of things. So I appreciate your patience and I appreciate you still tuning in in this time of transition. So once again, I can't wait to have LaShawn on the show. Can't wait to get his insight and opinion on several things. I have so many questions to ask him. He's been on the podcast before, as you know, with Andrew. He is a former NFL running back. He played at Iowa. So I can't wait to get his insight on many, many things. So with that being said, make sure you continue to listen on Spotify. Once again, YouTube will start back up on Monday. You're welcome to follow Locked on Hawkeyes on Twitter, on Instagram, and you can find me on Twitter at ryehill, W-R-I-H-I-L, and you can find me on Instagram as well, at ryehill, W-R-I-H-I-L.
Starting point is 00:21:39 Make sure you're turning into the show every day. It was a great episode today. We'll see you tomorrow.
