And of course, as camps have finished up, AAU circuit is wrapped for the season. Now it is time for Ben McCullum and company to push forward. We'll talk about that and Iowa being involved in some top. level prospects. We'll be joined by Tom Kaker from hawkeye report.com. We'll get the latest on Iowa football. Camp has begun. We'll talk a lot of football and basketball recruiting coming up here

Starting point is 00:01:15 with Tom Kaker, plus a little women's basketball. But we begin today's show with a look at who is going to be the next Iowa football star. We know the headliners coming into the year. And as the preseason watch lists are coming out all across the country, of course we're seeing for the Mackey Award, DJ Vonamay. We know he's going to be there. The offense alignment, return for Iowa that are already getting All-American Pub with Cade Piper moving inside, potentially to the center position, and of course, Trevor Loughke out at the last tackle. Zach Lutmer, an absolute stud. We know what he can do in the defensive backfield and manning things back there.

Starting point is 00:01:51 Now moving back from cash back to safety coming up this year. We know those guys, but this is the next group by the end of the season. These are going to be some household names. These are going to be guys that are not just known in Iowa, and even known here in the Upper Midwest and the old Big Ten West Territory, these are going to be household names in the Big Ten and names that people across the country are going to know for Iowa football. I start number one on this list with Cam Buffington.

Starting point is 00:02:17 Cam Buffington, a guy at middle linebacker that is becoming a guy that is the buzz guy of the off season. After taking over the role in the spring of the middle linebacker spot, and we know the success that that position has yielded throughout the, years. From Jay Higgins and what he was able to do, just an incredible player. We wondered how he was going to translate taking over for Jack Campbell. It was seamless there. A couple of All-Americans with Higgins and Campbell. Middle linebacker going all the way back to Abdul-Hodge. And you think of some of the other great players that have gone through there. From Josie Joule playing in the middle of the Iowa defense. You look at a guy like Pat Angerer and what he was able to do. Middle linebacker has been a spot

Starting point is 00:02:57 that has still been a stalwart for Iowa, even as they have transitioned into the 4-2-5. scheme with the cash position. It has changed, but one thing is not changed. Iowa in the middle has been good year in and year out. And for Cam Buffington to take over that role, to step into a role that was already manned. You already had a returner with experience, with starting experience in Jane Montgomery, and yet Cam Buffington is going to be a guy in the middle. We also know that it is a position that yields itself to putting together good statistical seasons. And I don't think there's any doubt. With the healthy season this year, Cam Buffington, he's going to rack up nearly 100 tackles, maybe north of that coming up this year. That's what you're going to see in the

Starting point is 00:03:39 middle and the next star for Iowa football. Cam Buffington, he is going to be a name. Let's jump over to the other side of the football and if we're going to the offense, I think you know where I'm going. Tony Diaz is going to be known as a difference maker at wide receiver for Iowa this year. I am a true believer in Tony Diaz. I am not slowing down. I am not pumping the brakes. I think what they have here is something very, very special. From what Kirk Farrants has said, we talked about at Big Ten football media days, equating him catching the ball to what a couple of all-time grades did. Bob Sanders, he's going to tackle people.

Starting point is 00:04:15 Marshall Yanda, he's going to block people. And Tony Diaz, he's going to catch passes. We know Kirk Farrant does not throw around praise like that very often. And certainly for a guy that just showed up on campus a couple of months ago, yet that has been the case. Great things said about him in the spring. They're excited about him. And what Kirk Ferrence is excited about a wide receiver, that definitely gets you pumped up as well.

Starting point is 00:04:37 Tony Diaz. Now, what is a realistic baseline for Tony Diaz coming up this season? Is it 50 catches, 650 yards, six touchdowns? I think that is a fair one. But if he puts up that kind of season, well, that's unlike anything that we've seen before at the wide receiver position over the last, what, eight years? You have to go back maybe even further the last time a wide receiver had to a season like that for Iowa football.

Starting point is 00:05:01 I think he is going to be a household name and one we're definitely going to know. Another one I think we're going to know when people across the Big Ten are going to know by the end of the season is Camari Brown. And had Scott Docterman on my radio show earlier in the week. He mentioned that Bruce Feldman on his freaks list is likely going to have Camari Brown in there. The transfer from Elon put up big numbers there. Yes, it's a jump up this year, making the jump into the Big Ten coming from the FCS ranks.

Starting point is 00:05:27 Elon to Iowa, yes, there is a step up there. But with the rotation that they're going to employ coming up this year with what they're going to do, and the situations, I think, also, that they're going to use Kamari Brown in coming up this season. You're going to have him go out there, have a nice year, show the ability to get to the quarterback. And if he can do all the extra things, all the little things that are asked for with what they have, returning experience with Kenneth Meriwether, of course, Yose Epinessa, also coming back at defensive end. And then some of the other young guys that were excited about, definitely talk about a guy like Drew Campbell out there, what you're going to get maybe potentially from Joseph Anderson. I'm excited about his upside.

Starting point is 00:06:07 There's a lot of different pieces, but I think by the end of the year, people are going to know Kamari Brown. And then one more. Maybe this is stepping out on a ledge this year, but I'm going to go with Eli Ozick. We've talked a lot here lately about special teams. And we're going to talk special teams coming up with Tom Kaker here in a little bit as well, because it is a concern. You lose both of your specialists from a year ago as both your kicker and punter apart. You lose an all-timer in Caden Weegean, who's off to the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers. We know what a dynamic playmaker he was in the return game.

Starting point is 00:06:38 And of course, you lose your special teams coordinator with Lovar moving on to Michigan State. There's a lot of new there. Yet Iowa consistently has been able to produce and put a solid kicker on the field almost every single year. Yes, there are some that have been better than others. understand that, but year in and year out, they've been in really good shape there. And I think Eli Ozick's going to be a guy. He's not going to have the leg of a Drew Stevens, but I believe he's going to have a solid season this year, and he's going to be a guy we're going to be talking about across the Big Ten.

Starting point is 00:07:10 Boy, Iowa, they did it again. They found another good solid kicker. Coming up next, Tom, cakered a lot of Hawkeye topics to talk with Tom about from hawkeye report.com. It's always fun. I get a kick out of the guys. They're carrying in their big box fans into the hotels. They're getting checked in.

Starting point is 00:09:58 We know the work that these guys are going to be doing here over the next couple of of weeks. Quarterback spot, look, it feels like we've talked it to death and we're probably going to do even more over the next three weeks or so, Tom. But that aside, I want to talk about a couple other position groups and I think big storylines for this team this year. And and this is one that I brought up on my podcast yesterday. The pressure is on, I think, Tim Lester now to deliver at the quarterback spot and with the passing game. We've seen the improvements that they have made in the run game. It is apparent. You can see it. And it wasn't just Caleb Johnson, years ago this past season, Kamari Molten, the consistency. We know that they can run the football

Starting point is 00:10:37 and they've kind of fixed some of the issues that they had there. They made the decision not to go into the portal, to bring in another quarterback. They're going to rely on the guys that they want. They both got a full spring practice. They're both going to get in August camp. They went out and got wide receivers with Evan James and the boogeyman Tony Diaz. They did everything that you need. It's kind of put up or shut up time now for Tim Lester in the passing game. Do you see it the same way? because they, you know, all the pieces are there. And Lester was the one that had to sign off and say, you know what? We like our two options at quarterback.

Starting point is 00:11:13 And one of these guys is going to get the shot to leave the team. And they felt comfortable enough to say, you know, either Hecklinsky or Hank Brown can be that guy that, because they could have easily went in the portal and found a guy that might have more experience or, you know, whatever. just got to bring in to be the starter. And they decided, you know, these guys can get it done. And then they went out instead, you know, enhanced that receiver room with James and, you know, Diaz, the boogeyman, as you said. And you got the DJ Benami is back too. So you've got kind of a trio there.

Starting point is 00:11:53 And along with, you know, Thomas Meyer, you got Edison Ostringo back. You've got, you know, Dayton Howard was coming on at the end of the year. You've got a lot of options, Reese Fandersey. We haven't even mentioned him, a healthy Reese Fandersey for this year. I mean, they've got some opportunities. And then you can throw the ball out of the backfield to, you know, Nathan McNeil or Kamari Moulton or Xavier Williams or L.J. Phillips. So they've got tons of options here this year.

Starting point is 00:12:25 And what should be, I think, a good offensive line once again this year. So they have, and they might have to score a lot of points, frankly, this year if the defense struggles. So big year for Tim Lester, I think you're right. You know, that is something also that I look at, you mentioned the offensive line. I'm with you. I think it's going to be good. Veslinsky, can he stay healthy? We'll see on that front.

Starting point is 00:12:49 But you have two preseason, All-Americans with Cade Piper and with Trevor Lout. And at two positions that are important, at least we thought two positions going to be important. Left tackle, yes, for last. What about the center position? Cale Winter, his name came up a couple of different times over in Chicago for you last week. And suddenly, we'll start turning a little bit. He wins the hail bath, the hay toss, hail bath toss over at Sol at a beef days. He got that component.

Starting point is 00:13:15 He's a guy that's been brought up from time to time. Is it, I want to get your thoughts. Is it maybe Piper just has not completely got there and everything that they're asked at the center position? Or is it just Cale Winter's playing that well? I think it's kind of, you know, here's the thing that parents always, the mantra he's always said is the five best will start. And it might be a situation where Kale Winner at Center, Kade Peeper back at right guard, makes that the best five, if that makes sense. Better than Peeper at Center and, you know, Lucas Augier or Mike Mislinsky or even Kail Winner at the right guard position.

Starting point is 00:14:01 And that may be what it comes down to if they end up moving them around. And it's still a long way to go before that happens. But when you hear parents bring it up and I talk to a couple of people and they're like, hey, you know, keep an eye on kale winter. And like, okay, so there's at least something to it. And I'm really curious to see what they say at Media Day, a week from today, and what we see for our own two eyes at practice. this on the 15th.

Starting point is 00:14:30 Talking with Tom Kekert, hawkeye report.com. Great deal coming up. We'll talk about that coming up here in just a little bit. Tom, we have gone around and around about the defense. And, you know, something that just jumped to my mind is, what if that defense does take a step back? You mentioned that earlier, in a way, I mean, the sustainability of being able to do a year after year after year

Starting point is 00:14:50 and playing not just at a good level or a solid level, playing at elite level, there has to be sometime that there is some kind of step back this year. And with the questions a defensive tackle, a new middle linebacker out there, you love Zach Lutmer, but still some questions in that defensive backfield, very well could be this year that they take a step back. What would it take, though, for them to maintain, to still play an incredible level, be a top 20 defense again this year? What would be the answers that you would need in order for that to happen? Yeah, I'll throw this out there as just kind of fun thought. Has there been a better decoordinator in the sport of college football the last decade than Phil Parker?

Starting point is 00:15:30 I don't think he can put anybody with Phil Parker. I mean, he's in nine straight seasons where they've allowed 20 points or less. Nobody else is doing that. I mean, it's crazy what he's been able to do. And, you know, sometimes it hasn't been with, like, this, you know, great deal of talent. They've had some really good players over the years. and, you know, Jack Campbell's and guys like that. But it's been pretty remarkable what he's been able to do,

Starting point is 00:15:59 getting this defense to perform at a really high level. But I think this is the biggest test just because they have, they're still inexperienced up front. And I'm really curious how they're going to stop the run. And they're going to throw a lot of bodies out there is what it sounds like based on what Kirk said. And they're going to see if those guys can, somebody can swim. and hopefully somebody can swim because they're going to have to find a way to limit. You know, we saw it last year, how they got gashed a couple of times that the Indiana game

Starting point is 00:16:32 and especially the Oregon game, they got gash pretty good on the ground. So they're going to have to stop the run and then, you know, they'll just not give up big plays the way they play the back end of their defense. But it's still just, boy, it's so many new faces. There's only three starters back. And, you know, you know, six or top eight defensive linemen are gone.

Starting point is 00:16:56 And the two guys that are back are pretty limited reps. So we'll see what happens. Middle linebacker, Cam Buffington takes over. Montgomery was the starter at the end of the last year, taken over for Harold a year ago. When you look at Cam Buffington, we've all heard the praise and the excitement that's definitely there for this guy.

Starting point is 00:17:14 You think maybe there's going to be a transit. Like, how good do you anticipate he's going to be? And I know it's going to go hand in hand. Look, those defensive tackles are going to have to keep blockers off of him in order of him make plays. But what you've heard about Buffington and getting that role at middle linebacker where we've seen Campbell and Jay Higgins and just the depth that we've seen a middle linebacker throughout the years and the elite play we've seen there, how good do you think he's going to be this year?

Starting point is 00:17:38 You know, the name, Jack Campbell is the comp that always comes up with him because of, you know, Buffington's not as big as Jack, but he's a good-sized guy at 6-3. He can get sideline to sideline like Jack Campbell could. And frankly, he's kind of a quiet leader like Jack Campbell. Jack wasn't the demonstrative leader on or off the floor. He's just a really quiet leader that's just led by his actions on the field. So that's the comp that I would throw out. But I don't know that that's fair because Jack Campbell's one,

Starting point is 00:18:16 probably the three or four best middle linebackers in the NFL right now. So, you know, he just, you have to temper it with a little bit of reality. But I think he's got a chance to be their next really good all-big 10 linebacker. And just because of his athleticism and the way he can get sidelines to sideline. And he's a thumper, too. So, you know, I'm anxious to see how he performs. Just over a month ago, Tom, you made your season prediction. as you do on the 4th of July every year with your fearless forecast.

Starting point is 00:18:49 And what popped out there was a other successful season. As you and I were conversing yesterday on the podcast, we were doing over-unders. And I landed under. I landed under this year. And one of the main reasons for that is special teams. I was won so many close games and they're probably going to beat a bunch again this season. When you lose the best return man, maybe in Iowa history, college football history, and Caden Weechin, both your specialists.

Starting point is 00:19:13 You also lose your your special teams coordinator on top of it. That is a lot of question marks coming into the year. And if I was not elite defensively, I don't think they're going to be. They're not going to be elite, we know, offensively. And if they're not good at special teams,

Starting point is 00:19:29 all of a sudden, it goes from a potential 9, 10 win season to a ho-hum seven and five. What do you see with the special team? Yeah, and that's, you know, I wrote something this week about the storylines for camp. And, you know, we just haven't talked much about special teams as a collective, like, you know, beat. We've talked about them when they're really good and how what a difference they make.

Starting point is 00:19:54 But it's a lot of change this year from, you know, long snappers to new punter, new kicker. I think Lutmer will be fine as the punt return, but is he going to be Caden Legion? I, you know, that's hard to, best return guy in the history of Iowa football, and that's with all due respect to Tim White, Tim Dwight, and, you know, you're going to be missing him. And you've lost some far woods. Now, I think Chris Belizey is going to be terrific, but it's still transition. And so you've got to, I think they'll be great in coverage. They've got all those young linebackers that they can throw out there and that can,

Starting point is 00:20:37 all those guys can run and hit and everything. But it's a transition year for that. And, you know, they haven't really had, other than Drew Stevens towards the end of the year, a couple years ago, I remember when he got pulled at Nebraska. They haven't really had a kicker issue. And you worry about that.

Starting point is 00:20:58 But we'll see what Eli Ozick can do. You know, hopefully Liberty, Missouri continues to be good to Iowa athletics. It was pretty good to the Iowa basketball team with Bennett Sturts, and now they've got a kicker from that high school, Eli Ozick, coming in this year. That is interesting. Now, we anticipate he's not going to have the leg of a Drew Stevens, who was just a had a cannon on there for a right leg. It's going to be different.

Starting point is 00:21:23 Do you know, or is that going to be a question we're probably going to get maybe next week over at Media Day that we're going to find out exactly kind of what the range is looking like there. We don't anticipate he's going to be kicking. What was the attempt that they had against Penn State last year before the half? probably not going to see any 60 plus yarders this year. Yeah, well, I think that was like 66 yards. That's one of the KF regrets, I think. Definitely.

Starting point is 00:21:46 One of the most uncurt-Ferns-like decisions ever, and, of course, it blew up spectacularly. But, yeah, that's how it happens. Yeah, I would guess he's probably like 50N. You can probably hit from there, but I don't know that there's much beyond. that. And he's kind of still winning the job, too. Caden Burr, kid from Bentonorf, big leg, he's probably going to have a say in it. So just like, you know, the punter thing, I think

Starting point is 00:22:15 everybody thought Boston Everett from Australia was going to come in and win that punter job. And it wouldn't surprise me if, you know, Phil Pot from Waukeen Northwest ends up being, being the punter this year for Iowa. Tom, what to finish up with a little basketball for you. And we've talked to you and I a bunch of this summer about Caden Dottery, the summer that he had elevating himself into one of the top players in the country, continues to go up the ranks and the top point guard that I was obviously looking at for the class of 2007 coming up next year. But they are still working other angles also,

Starting point is 00:22:50 trying to find some other guys and another big time recruit, Jalen Davis down to his top 10. That includes the Iowa Hawkeyes. He's going to be taking a visit on October 3rd. What can you tell us about Davis and is this real? Yeah. He's a kid that they went and saw last year for the first time really in person when Iowa was on that West Coast Road trip when they played at Oregon and at Washington. They went and saw this kid because he was a highly touted point card prospect and offered him immediately after watching him.

Starting point is 00:23:26 You know, no surprise kid is really good. He's got some size. I saw him in May play a couple times at the Adidas event in South Bend. and he's a really talented, just makes the right play all the time, just knows how to handle the ball and set people up and find the open guy. He's not as dynamic and kind of, I guess the kids would call it like aura. It doesn't have the aura of a kid in Dottry out on the floor, but he's bigger, doesn't shoot it as well, but he is really good.

Starting point is 00:24:01 I mean, at UCLA and other schools are after him, you know, he's, He's a really talented player. So he's going to come in in October. That is if Caden Doctrie hasn't made his decision yet. I was checking around yesterday with some of our national guides on Doctry because in July, when we talked to him, he said, hey, I'm going to make a list of 10 or 11 schools. I'm still considering or at least that after we get done with Peach Jam. And I'm going to probably schedule some other visits. Neither of those things have happened.

Starting point is 00:24:33 The only thing that he has on the book still right now, that is public knowledge at least, is a trip to Iowa City for the Iowa Iowa State weekend. That's it. So, you know, he hasn't, you know, the only thing he's tweeted out really is highlights of himself. He's going to play in Rucker Park at an event, I think, on the 17th. And then he's, he got an offer from Arkansas. And I think that's pretty much it. So we're just kind of waiting to see if there's any. anything that comes from him, but the longer it goes with no other visits planned and no list of schools,

Starting point is 00:25:09 the better Iowa has to feel about where they sit with them. We're talking about the number one point card in the country, a top five player, almost consensus now in the country, not from Ames, not from Cedar Rapids, not from Mason City, a kid from Florida, and that has Iowa at the top of his list. Tom, this would be a game game. What would it mean for just the program as a whole to be able on the heels of an elite eight to land a prospect like that? He's a type of kid that can take you to places where you haven't been in a long time. Maybe since 1980.

Starting point is 00:25:44 Wow. Well, they were there eight minutes away from it last year. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, that's not like being too hyperbolic because they had a kid take them there to the cusp of that. And, you know, Dr. He's just, there's a reason Bennett Sturts came and watched him play when we were in Vegas in July. He came.

Starting point is 00:26:05 Bennett showed up at the game and watched me, he goes, I got to see this. I got to see this. And Bennett talked to the kid. The kid came over and sought Bennett out to talk to him after a game and said, what is it like at Iowa and what is it like playing for Ben McCollum? And he gave him very honest answers. He must have liked what he heard because he still has interest in Iowa. So, yeah, this could be program-defining moment for Ben McCollum.

Starting point is 00:26:35 So we'll see what happens. But it's, boy, it could be pretty incredible because this kid, I'm telling you, and I'm not one to like get too much into the hype, but this kid is just, he is different in a way that other guards aren't. And he just, he makes everybody better. He's the best. He's not like this super duper athlete that you think, wow, this guy is just a freak of nature. He's just a really, really skilled basketball player that just plays that different.

Starting point is 00:27:09 I know McCollum's in love with him. So, boy, it would be huge, huge. That's an understatement. Tom Kaker at hawkireport.com. Mention that second weekend of the year. Now, overall in college football, it is not a overwhelming slate if you saw it on Friday. Just how great the slate is, exactly two months from today, as you got some monster matchups, Notre Dame, Miami. You got the Holy War with BYU and Utah facing off, Georgia, Ole Miss, a couple other big games that weekend.

Starting point is 00:29:48 I think it's Oregon, Ohio State. Just a great weekend. Well, that's not the case in week number two. But we know what that means for us here in the state of Iowa. That is Seahawk Week. And with Seahawk Week, being here in that week, what we just talked about, that is the weekend that Caden Dottery is visiting. after Iowa has lost three of the last four.

Starting point is 00:30:05 And the losing streak now continues inside of Kinnick Stadium against the cyclones. Iowa State going through a huge transition, 80 new players on that football roster. This needs to be an old school Hayden Fry butt-wopin. Put on a show, have some fun, make some big plays. Tony Diaz going deep. Evan James coming up with some plays, run the ball, dominate the football game. And with it, let's get that commitment from Caden Dohery. If that happens, oh, the celebration in Iowa City is going to be good, as likely I will go to 2 and 0 on the season.
