Starting point is 00:00:00 Senior leadership is a major tenet of Iowa football under Kirk Farrants with only 10 seniors this year, why Iowa football's leadership has to look different if they're going to be successful this season. You are Locked on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. Hey, welcome in. I'm Trent Condon, and this is the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast. Thanks for being with us and making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first. listen every day. We got some portal news coming up this weekend.
Starting point is 00:00:39 Iowa women with a couple of visitors coming to town. Iowa men's team officially gets the signature of Tyreek Coleman, their point guard of the future. We'll talk a little bit about that and some good numbers that have started to pop on that front. We're also being joined by Elliott Club from Hawkeye Insider.com. The latest on Iowa Spring Football with Elliott. But we begin today with something that I have mentioned in passing from time to time. But I think bears a little bit more of a deeper.
Starting point is 00:01:05 look and it is the lack of seniors on this Iowa football team coming up this season. Now, we've seen similar circumstances of the past. There's times where the numbers have been in the upper teens, 16, 18 guys, something like that. For the most part, you do have, though, in that 20 to 25 range, normally is what you see. Now, of course, in the past, that included a lot more walk-ons, guys that stuck through the program and helped out in various different ways throughout the special teams, night, even guys that didn't play a whole lot. Well, now with this new roster limit that is in place,
Starting point is 00:01:39 and with the 105 player roster limit that has been implemented by the NCAA, well, many of those stories go by. Do you think about it? Well, at minimum, and it's an extra, what, 20 guys that is not on your roster, sometimes 25. That's five, six guys in that senior class. And because of that, well, that number's going to dwindle a little bit more. Also, Iowa had a bunch of guys came back. Iowa has done a great job historically of obviously going out there and keeping guys around. Their retention rate is amongst the best in college football and certainly at the power conference structure that you see, guys that see the end, that get to their final destination. But you go through and you look at the senior roster this year. You have a couple of guys that are anticipated starters this year.
Starting point is 00:02:23 Deshaun Lee definitely at the top of the list. I think it would be maybe the upset of all upsets if Deshaun Lee is not one of the starters. And as we mentioned yesterday with Phil Parker, he talked a lot about Deshaun Lee and his leadership and being becoming a leader and the growth that they've seen out of the senior from Bellevue. All right, there's one. Jade Montgomery took over at middle linebacker a year ago. We saw him come in for Harold and do a pretty good job. He's another guy that has been talked about plenty. Obviously, his father played at the University of Iowa, Jerry Montgomery.
Starting point is 00:02:53 A guy, though, a little bit undersized, definitely goes out there, gets his nose involved. And we'll see if it's going to be him at middle. linebacker, is it going to be Cam Buffington? But we know Jade Montgomery at minimum, he's going to be out there playing a whole lot this season. Jack Dotsler. There's another guy that is an anticipated starter after battling a year ago for the left tackle spot. Ultimately, Trevor Loughke won that spot. We still did get to see a little bit of Dotsler. He was involved in a rotation earlier this season. I thought did a fine job and you feel really good about him, got his feet wet a little bit more a season ago and now going to be a senior starter at right tackle.
Starting point is 00:03:27 I think this is going to be one of the good stories of Iowa football. And you're always looking for them each and every year. Those good stories, those guys that have waited their turn, done all the right things, all the hours in the wait room, on the practice field, and then it pops for them. They get another opportunity at the next level. I think you're going to see that from Jack Dotsler. Guys coming back, including Addison Estranga. Now, with the emergence of DJ Vonami, that maybe has changed Addison Estranga
Starting point is 00:03:54 and what his usage is going to be this season. Plus, he's coming off an Achilles injury. And as we know with Achilles injuries, and yes, I know the Celtics might have a different conversation. This is a really difficult injury, though, to come back from. And we'll see just how good Addison Estrange is going to be this season and what he's going to be able to provide. But there's another guy that's been around the block. Zatt Orthwart, another one, another tight end, in fact. You got the two walk-on defensive tackles, Will Hubert and Luke Gaffney.
Starting point is 00:04:22 And this is it. Alex Eichmann, a walk-on wide receiver. He is also listed as a senior, Landon Van Kekricks, who is a special team's demon, and Bryce Stevenson, who comes in from Holy Cross and definitely going to need him and his development to help out in the middle of the defensive tackle positions we've talked about a ton. All told, 10 guys, 10 seniors on this squad. I can't remember anything close to this before. Now, I could be wrong.
Starting point is 00:04:52 There might have been a year that just everything kind of fell in this direction, but only 10 seniors on this squad. It's going to be a different kind of leadership. And as we heard about Zach Lutmer, he's a guy that a little bit more lead by example but he's becoming more and more vocal as he goes throughout his career. And Phil Parker talked about that at the press conference earlier this week.
Starting point is 00:05:15 Leadership, it's a huge thing for Kirk Farrant's. And I've said this before. If you're in every day or you've heard me, I'm sure mentioned this. I don't know a coach anywhere. And I know. I listen to every Kirk Farrant's press conference or read the transcript afterwards. So, yes, I listen to him a lot more than anybody else, but that talks about leadership, and the value that leadership is for a football team and how important that is. So that means some of those young guys are going to have to be more vocal. And you're going to have to see guys also that are newbies to the program, maybe doing those kind of things.
Starting point is 00:05:49 As we've mentioned with guys like Tony Diaz, leading by example and what he's doing out there, making plays and him and Evan James coming in at the wider receiver position, those kind of parts of it. Guys are going to have to grow up fast and guys are going to have to do different kind of leadership than maybe we're used to for Iowa football. But it's important. And Kirk Ferrence would not bring it up as often as he does if it doesn't matter. 10 seniors this year, a weird look at the roster this season.
Starting point is 00:06:17 The good news, boy, that gets you excited about the future. I think Iowa's got a chance to have a really nice season this year. we've talked about the opening of the Big Ten slate as difficult as you're going to find. They go on the road to Michigan. They come back home for Ohio State and then they go to Washington, a place that is obviously on the West Coast, and that's been a house of horrors for Kirk Farrant's throughout his career. Find me an opening slate of any conference schedule as difficult as what Iowa has.
Starting point is 00:06:46 The good news after that, it lightens up. I think this team has a chance to be pretty good, just going to look a little bit different. And if they have a good season this year, if they can stack up a nine and three, eight and four even type of season with what they likely are going to return going into next year. Oh boy, the hype train, it's definitely going to get started for Iowa football. We come back on the other side, Elliot Clough, speaking of those press conferences with Bill Parker, Tim Lester, and of course the new coordinator in Pallizi with his special teams. Well, Elliot Clough was there. We'll get his perspective of what he heard. Some good news and notes as well from spring practice.
Starting point is 00:07:22 Some of the guys that are popping will get Elliott's perspective on that as we continue. Stay right there. This is Locked on Hawkeyes. Workplace chaos. Hawkeyes, your first listen every day. We are your daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast. Elliot Clough, doing great work along with Sean Bach, David Eichold, over at hawkyeinider.com. And Elliott joined us earlier to talk a little spring football. 24-7 sports.
Starting point is 00:09:11 Good to talk to Ellie. Appreciate you coming on. Obviously, busy day listening to all the coordinators speak. You'll get your eyeballs on practice coming up here in, oh, about 48 hours. Things should be just wrapping up. but I guess we'll just throw it out there. Let's start with Tim Lester and the offense. We'll work our way through the other two.
Starting point is 00:09:29 Just when you heard Tim Lester, I love the fact that he made the media wait before he got into the quarterback because he knew everybody wanted to start there. But what was a takeaway or two from listening to Tim Lester yesterday? Yeah. You know, I think the main thing is confirming what we've been hearing behind the scenes is that the Hank Brown and Jeremy Hecklinsky competition is probably going to go down to the wire. He doesn't really have a timeline on it.
Starting point is 00:09:57 He's seeing things that are encouraging from both of them that Hank Brown has taken some more shots. He's had more explosive plays than expected. I think he's had more explosive plays than Hecklinsky, actually, in the spring, according to Lester. Then he also didn't sound super committal to the Cade Peeper moving on. over to center, which was interesting. And of course, you know, offensive line isn't, you know, one of the sexy positions that everybody loves to talk about. But that's a big move. I mean, you're a place in Logan Jones, who, one of the better offensive linemen at Iowa in recent memory,
Starting point is 00:10:34 along with both Stevens and Jennings Dunker and Peeper, who was often at right guard. I mean, the conversation since the end of the season has been, oh, he's moving over to center. Well, it doesn't sound like it's guaranteed at this point. Plus, Michael Ms. Linsky's heard a good chunk of spring. We don't really know where Trent Wilson's at after he's trained an ankle. So definitely a lot more questions than answers at this point. Well, there are no questions that the hype train continues for Tony Diaz. And Tim Lester did not slow things down yesterday. Now, he's been banged up. And as David Eicholt reported over at Hawkeye Insider, anticipate that he's going to be out for the rest of the spring. Regardless,
Starting point is 00:11:14 though, guy that just goes and gets the ball. I mean, Tim Lester, I read the transcript. I didn't have a to watch it. Was there a little smirk on his face, a little bit of smile when he was talking about, Tony Diaz, because Elliot, we've been hearing this from all over the place. Oh,
Starting point is 00:11:29 yeah, one quote that he said that I don't think I've heard yet, at least, it's something about how he's been willing to put basically everything on the line, like he'll land on his head at behalf of Kentucky football, which was a new, a new bit about Tony.
Starting point is 00:11:44 But the other thing that we actually reported on Hawkeye Insider that he has been, though he has been banged up a little bit, he has been back at practice, but it's been very limited at this point. So he's not completely out. I would be very surprised to do plays on Saturday, but just Spirit participates on Saturday because of the fact that he has been banged up. And Kirk Ferrence, as he should often keep guys out, even if it's just bumps and bruises of the open spring practice. Don't need to get anybody hurt. Just so fans can get a look at them. But yeah, I mean, I was not, I mean, maybe I wasn't anticipating exactly what Tim said, but I also wouldn't say I was surprised because Tim will, I don't think he's necessarily shy about praising his guys, right?
Starting point is 00:12:36 Like, Phil can get that way from time to time, but Tim, Tim is going to let you know what that he's excited about, you know, even see some of these young guys like Hecklinsky last year saying, He's a little ball player now. We heard that quite a bit. Yeah. So I wouldn't say I was shocked, but to hear that side of it was interesting that he's willing to put his life on the line to catch a football. Yeah, here was the quote. Tony can come down with the ball.
Starting point is 00:13:04 I wish he was more protective of his body. He goes for it now. He might land on his head, but he'll at the end, he'll come up with the ball. Pretty good quote for Tony Diaz. What about what about Evan James? What do we know about him? He was also part of the conversation. Yeah, I don't believe Tim said much about Evan yesterday, maybe a little bit.
Starting point is 00:13:26 It's mostly just been that he's, you know, that speed guy that you're looking for. Not going to be Caden Weegean, not going to be Jacob Gill. He's going to be Evan James, right? But I think he has a chance to be, I'm not trying to be hyperbolic here, but sort of a combo of the two where he is a little bit of a possession receiver, but probably faster than what Jacob Gill was. And we'll get just almost as much as a look at Evan James as Lester has this spring because he's been out for a good chunk of it. I've been able to participate the last two weeks,
Starting point is 00:13:55 but it'll be really interesting to get a second look at him as far as media. It'll be interesting to get a second look at him this weekend and see how much. I mean, he might be more involved than he otherwise would be, assuming Tony doesn't participate, V as participate. But, yeah, James will be interesting. thing. I don't necessarily foresee him being a guy that plays like an overwhelming amount as much as like a starter, like a Reese Vandersey or Tony Diaz or Dayton Howard will probably play this year. Maybe even Jerry at Bowie that plays this year because he's young. It's his first year
Starting point is 00:14:32 in the Big Ten. But I mean, maybe he'll prove me wrong with his speed and playmaking ability as a possession receiver. It'll be one of those things to follow. on the defensive side of the ball, Phil Parker. I think it's made me a consensus now. Defensive tackle is the biggest question mark about this football team as a whole. You know Bryce Hawthorne. He was a rotational piece last year. Yeah, you wanted to make a step.
Starting point is 00:14:56 I got excited because he said this earlier, Elliot. Phil doesn't throw around the praise quite as much. Just him bringing up unprompted, Devin Kennedy, bloodlines of his dad, Jimmy Kennedy, obviously is stud both at the college level and the NFL level. He's got the size, versatility. And now it's that time. needs to be a part of it.
Starting point is 00:15:13 What have you heard about the spring that Devin Kennedy has had? You got Hubert Gaffney in there and defense and tackle as a whole. Yeah, the two young guys that keep coming up to me are Kennedy and Brad Fitzgibbon. The Gibbon Parker didn't bring up yesterday. But Kennedy is a guy who's long. I don't know if you guys remember this. I may have brought it up recently, but he's a guy that the offensive line group started to call Unk his first year with the program because he'd show up.
Starting point is 00:15:42 in khaki shorts and a polo. And when you talk to him, he sounds like he's a 40-year-old. Like, he sounded that way when he was 17 and getting recruited by Iowa, and I got to talk to him a little bit. But, yeah, I've heard some good things about his length and the way he plays the position because of that maturity. I mean, Kelvin Bell loves a mature kid who's, you know, 18 and, again, talks like he's 40. So I imagine he's really bought in risk of what Bell has put together there.
Starting point is 00:16:11 and then Fitzgibbon is just a violent football player that, again, it's smart. Like, you have to be smart to play defensive line at Iowa. Their two-gap system is unique for college football. It's not just skiing off and getting after the quarterback or trying to rack up tackles for loss. It's plugging holes and preventing first downs and preventing easy third down specifically as well as stopping you once you get towards the red zone. But, yeah, those two would be ones that are going to be interesting.
Starting point is 00:16:40 and man, I just, I can't help but have a bunch of question marks about the transfers at this point. Emmanuel Olaq Baju definitely has physical traits, but I think it was nine tackles in 10 games or nine, excuse me, 10 tackles in nine games or something like that in North Dakota. Two and a half sacks. He looks like the whole could be awesome, but just hasn't done a whole lot in his career, only at the FCS level between St. Thomas and North Dakota. And, and I mean, after that, it's Bryce Stevenson, who sounded. like he was a little overwhelmed start the year.
Starting point is 00:17:12 He's starting to get his footing now. But, yeah, I mean, defense tackle, big question mark. We'll see how much the walk on fill in that role. Hubert and Gaffney have been around. Feels like they've been around the program for 10 years at this point. But, yeah, you hope your scholarship guys can step up and fill that void. And I would be really intrigued to see what Kennedy and Fitzgiv and look like on Saturday. As you think back to December, when some of the young guys that didn't play much,
Starting point is 00:17:43 they were taking advantage of those bull prep practices, as you think back, was there a name that popped up in December that got brought up with either of the coordinators yesterday? I think the main one would be Cam Buffington. That was another one that, and I guess maybe we're talking about two different things, but Buffington is a guy that has had quite a bit of buzz around him, basically since he arrived on campus. And Jaden Montgomery was one that brought him up right away,
Starting point is 00:18:19 right away during Bull Prep when we got to talk to him about some of the young guys. And it's looking like he's going to be a starter. And Phil definitely wanted to dance around the question about who's playing where at linebacker. I was wondering if it was going to be Montgomery at Mike or Cam at Mike. Sounds like it's going to be Cam at Mike. because Phil was saying stuff to the effect of, well, we have him play a bunch of different positions. But, you know, Cam was was, was, was bumped and, you know, was dealing with a small injury. So he missed a couple of practices.
Starting point is 00:18:51 And we had Montgomery move over to Mike. And we had that kind of thing where he wanted to keep it quiet, but alluded to it a little bit. And so I think it's going to be really, really fun to watch Cam Buffington really figure it out on the field this year. He might, I mean, other than. Zach Lutmer, he might be Iowa's best defensive player by the end of the year. He's just got all the physical tools, everything you've wanted out of a mic that Iowa kind of didn't get last year. Montgomery had his flashes, right?
Starting point is 00:19:21 But I think that pair is going to be really fun. And that's something that I've heard about quite a bit, too, is those two fit in really well together at that mic and Will the linebacker positions in Iowa's 425. You brought up obviously Zach Lutmur, leading this defense and defensive back group. His versatility, he can play corner, he can play safety, he can play cash, he can play anywhere. We saw that a year ago. Sounds like though corner probably off the table for him. Phil Parker likes the depths of his cornerback and that's a good thing because Phil normally doesn't like the depth of anywhere and he wants more and more and more as we see them
Starting point is 00:19:55 steal some guys from the offensive side of the ball in the past. Lutmer betting favorite right now. Where does he trot out on the field first defensive position against northern Illinois? got to be cash i mean how good he was at cash last year um plus i mean you're looking at corner you're going to have deshawn lee as your cb one probably jalen watson or rashad godfrey at cb2 um and then i think he rolls i think phil rolls with the transfer safeties and tyler brown and anthony hawkins it's strong and free safety i mean that cash position is just you're required to do so much you have to be good in coverage you have to be a really good open field tackler. You have to be, I mean, effectively a fit, well, obviously a fifth defensive back, but also
Starting point is 00:20:40 a linebacker. You have to be a mixture of the two. And I think where you trust Lutmer the most is in a position that has so many different responsibilities. That's really where you want one of your best athletes as well, and that's what Lutmer is. So I honestly think, you know, looking back at the Cooper de Jine years, I think Cooper was best at corner and having Castro. at cash was a luxury that, you know, wasn't necessarily expected to be afforded to Iowa, as well as he played, I guess. And then you had the opportunity to put Dijin at corner. Otherwise, you know, having your best athlete at cash is going to be most advantageous.
Starting point is 00:21:21 And I think that's what lover is. Can he play all five spots? Yeah. Will he probably play all five spots at different points in the season? Maybe not in one game, but, you know, throughout the season, he'll be throwing it corner, throwing it strong, throwing it free. depending on who's healthy, who's not, and what kind of looks the defense is getting. But he's got to be your cash.
Starting point is 00:21:40 He's just too good, too good at that specific position. And I think he's going to be mostly playing there, along with returning punt. Chris Khalisi alluded to that yesterday, too. Yeah, well, let's finish up there. We're short on time, but just a thought or two on what you heard from Polisi. You know, he's a he wanted to be a hawk for a while. That's for sure. Yeah, almost getting emotional talking about taking the position.
Starting point is 00:22:11 It's definitely going to be different, right? Like LeVarwood's holding that position for a while. You lose an All-American returner. You lose your punter. You lose your kicker who could hit from 60 plus. Though Eli Ozick did tell me the other day that he was hitting field goals from 60 plus in practice. So that's something of note. But it's a complete, complete turnover there.
Starting point is 00:22:33 It'll be really interesting to see what Polici does with this room in year one. And I can't help, you know, you can't help to be a little nervous. That's a lot of turnover in one position group. So it'll be interesting to see what police he does. Good stuff, Elliot Clef. Appreciate it. As always, thanks for recapping yesterday an eventful day in Iowa City. You'll have another one coming up here on Saturday.
Starting point is 00:22:56 Thanks for jumping on, Elliot. Appreciate it. For sure. Thank you. I'm going to talk to you, hawkeye insider.com, part of the 24-7 sports network. Our glimpse at this squad pumped up for this one. Here are the details for you if you're making away over to Kinnick Stadium. The gates will open at 945.
Starting point is 00:24:09 The practice will begin at 10.45. Fans can enter and gates A, that's on the south end zone. B, the southwest or the northwest in Gate H. That's how you can get in to their free parking available on hard service slots as well. Concession stands will be open as we will get a glimpse at this Iowa football team. A couple of notes to wrap things up. Tyree Coleman makes it official. He signs his scholarship agreement with the Hawkeye program.
Starting point is 00:24:36 So definitely good news there, the point guard that I still think there should be a lot of excitement for. A guy that has had such a great season, I thought as a freshman, the guy that's good off the bounce, has shot it well. One thing that stood out to me, you know, we talked about his shooting 42% as a freshman at Illinois State. And I wondered how sustainable that was. I did see that he also shot 39% from three as a, senior in high school. So the shooting's there. And I think mechanically, maybe there's a little something to work on there. You don't want to overwhelm the guy. Definitely and try to change things
Starting point is 00:25:08 huge for a guy that's been as successful as he has. But this guy's going to be fun to watch. And him and Kail Combs in the back court, definitely good. Now, Iowa since had 14 scholarship players at the moment with those 14 scholarships. They can go up to our 14 guys on the roster, 13 of them on scholarship. Regardless, you get up 15 total. Whatever way you want to scoop it up, You can have all 15 on scholarship. You can have 10 on scholarship, but five walk-ons. The total is 15, period.
Starting point is 00:25:32 They got one spot, likely saving it for Tavion Banks to come back.
