to Iowa State for the first time since 2004.
Iowa loses to the cyclones on the wrestling mat.
We'll talk about the duel and big picture this Iowa wrestling program
and any hope going forward for this year and a future outlook.
We're also going to talk some Iowa football.
We'll try to wash out that bad taste in our mouth from the wrestling duel on Sunday
and get into Iowa's win against Nebraska.
Look at the grades from pro football focus as we do each and every week and some big
basketball talk. Iowa women with a nice win on Sunday against Fairfield team that won 31 games two years
ago, 28 games a season ago, and Iowa gets a big win in that one. And the Iowa men get ready for
their Big Ten opener on the road at Michigan State, a huge, huge matchup in the I zone. We begin today's
program, though, with the look at just that, the Iowa wrestling team. And what a frustrating
performance it was Sunday at Iowa State. And though it was not a jam-packed Hilton Colise.
about, what, 10,000, I know announced attendance was about 12,000, made their way through
the turnstiles and saw an Iowa performance that is going to be remembered for a long time
and for all the wrong reasons.
When you go 21 straight years without losing to your in-state rival, when you win 19
consecutive duels varying degrees of success, and then you see this happen.
And after we've had these conversations on the wrestling mat about the way that Penn State
is completely taken over this sport
and that there appears to be
nobody that can slow them down.
And the only program over these 15 years
that have been able to do it as Iowa
and three different instances, 2010,
2020 and 21.
But short of that, this has been Penn State sport.
I know the Buckeyes got a national championship in there as well.
So you have that.
And that's a change for all of us wrestling fans.
That's a change for all of us that saw,
obviously the success that Dan Gable had,
the success of the national championship,
and how this program is looked at is just that it's about national championships.
Well, that, for all intents and purposes, is off the board.
Year after year after year, the likelihood that I was going to win a national championship,
it's incredibly slim.
But now, not only are you, well, we're the next best program.
We're number two.
Oklahoma State is out there spending money.
We saw what Nebraska did a year ago, and their incredible run that they had in nationals
and getting up there in the top three and bringing home a trophy.
We see now Iowa State, at least in a duel, getting past Iowa.
And you look around, mentioned Ohio State and what happened, national duels in that championship
out where the Hawkeyes were just absolutely pulverized.
This is not about just losing a duel.
But streaks are meant to be broken.
It's going to happen.
And Kevin Dressor, though it's taking a lot longer, I think, than anybody would have anticipated.
He has been building this moment.
He's got a nice team.
It's a good team, spent well,
brought in the right guys out of the portal,
developed a lot of guys that are,
and finally healthy.
This is not to discredit anything about Iowa State.
This is an Iowa conversation.
And when you lose in this way,
and when you get beat up the way that you do,
you lose a duel, it's going to happen.
But when you have two of your heavy heads that get beat,
and we're already talking about
Drake Aiella with three losses
and we know that he's got a bird problem at Illinois
and we saw that show up again at national duels
and to get beat by Evan Frost in that fashion
you're left shaking your head
you have a match early on where you think
Patrick Kennedy's going to get Iowa back in the match
they're going to have an opportunity maybe to win this thing
pull it off
and he gets beat
he's in control for the first period and a half
and he can beat 9-8 in overtime
and if you go into a duel and you say
that the reason I was going to lose is because of those two guys
well you can understand it and that's the way it played out
now the season's not over
they're not going to box up the singlets for the year
and put it away and say we'll try again next season
it's not how wrestlers are that's not how this wrestling program
is we know that
but the concerning part is normally
we've seen Iowa wrestle very well in the early portions of the season.
Russell well when we get into January.
The problem has been come nationals over the last four years.
That's where the concern is lied because these guys are going to put in the work.
They're going to put in the time.
They're going to absolutely grind.
And the problem has been it felt like they've ground themselves into a nub year after year after year.
And by the time they get to the middle of March, there's nothing left in the tank.
And we've seen that show up time in and time out.
so many of these guys.
But then he coupled with a couple of your heavy heads that don't get the job done.
And then also your transfers.
Your guys that are going to fill in the gaps, the guys that you bring in at minimum,
these guys are going to be all Americans.
And you hope for more.
And you hope with the tutelage of the brands and the rest of the coaching staff that these guys are going to ascend.
So you go to Little Rock and you bring in two guys.
And to see this here, Paley, who had 141.
pounds doesn't look like he can compete certainly at the highest of levels
competed for the top half of the podium finished in the top four as a guy two
years ago to finish fourth in the country and it looks like there's no shot at 141 he
looks too small he's ragdoll up and down you go two weeks later and jordan williams makes
his debut and he's making mistakes on the edge of mat and giving up takedowns there
and just again giving up a major decision
in a spot where you could talk yourself into maybe at minimum
it's going to be tight maybe lay tape down
you can sneak one out and pull an upset here
and there was no shot and that's where the frustrations lie
you go to the top and you start this meet off at 285
and you go there with Ben Keeter
who's battled his own injuries
but Ben Keeter coming out
and you look at what he did
at not both the national level and the international level coming in
and he tried to play both football and basketball
football and wrestling
he tried to do both
dedicating himself now back to wrestling
and he just
it doesn't work at that weight class
at 285 it doesn't work for him he's not big enough
if there was a weight class in the middle
if there was something between 197 and 285 he'd be great
And there's a 235-pound wave class.
Absolutely. Ben Keeter would be an All-American.
Ben Keeter would be a national champ likely.
But that's not the case.
And you see it again in that instance.
A lot of frustrations.
And now the question continues to be, is it time to make a move?
This is what I always say.
It doesn't matter the sport.
It doesn't matter what sport you're talking about.
Who are you going to get?
And we're seeing this happen once.
again at a big time level in college football.
You look at Penn State still searching for a coach.
You look at Blue Blood programs out there like Iowa wrestling.
Who are you going to get?
David Taylor, he's at Oklahoma State,
and he's got a big I-N-I-L war chest.
And the likelihood that's not going to happen.
I mean, you want to go Spencer Lee?
Do we know that Spencer Lee is going to be an excellent coach?
I don't think so.
It's just guesswork.
It's name recognition.
Kyle Dake, that's another name that gets thrown around.
Jordan Burroughs.
A big name, certainly in the wrestling scene.
Is there anything, though, that tells us that these guys are going to be college wrestling
coaches at the highest level?
Because it takes more than just name recognition to get guys here.
Brett McHap, former Hawkeye, at Iowa State, you go that direction.
Doug Schwab, who's done an incredible job with not many resources at you and I,
Hawkeye National Champion
you go that direction
there just isn't a whole lot there that says
oh yeah that's the one that makes sense
that one there's not an easy call
and you just continue to go
here's another thing we don't know
at least I don't know
and that's how Beth gets
looks at the wrestling program
you got big money donors
that make it
certainly in terms of finances
NIL opportunities
as good as you're going to find
and this new day and age
are the brands the right guys to run it
in this era
of college athletics and college wrestling
are those the guys that make the most sense
and as Beth gets
with everything else going on
and with the changing world
of college athletics
at a future
in the next one, two, three, five years
gonna have to make a football hire
just made a basketball higher
on the men's side
in your two most high profile
at least financially sports
It's self-sustaining.
Wrestling program brings in money.
You sell out the building.
Does it just leave that to the side?
Let's not upset the apple cart.
Or do you really want to get Iowa back to being a national championship contender?
We don't know with that.
And certainly with Beth gets what her thoughts are on the wrestling program.
There's a lot there.
But in a duel, where you got 10 guys to take the mat,
only four of them have takedowns you have nine takedowns in the match six of them came from
Michael Calliando frustrating day big questions no doubt but the hopes of chasing down Penn State
appear to be off the table and now you're chasing Nebraska and Ohio State and Oklahoma State
and Iowa State tough time to be an Iowa wrestling fan let's wash that out let's talk some
football. Let's go back to Black Friday at the win against Nebraska. Take a look at some of the
grades. Plus, we got some basketball coming up here. It is that time of year. It's a crossover season
and we got you covered on your daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast locked on Hawkeyes. Make sure you hit

going on. We got basketball talk. But first, let's talk football. Look back at the grades from
PFF. Pro Football.
focus as Iowa, throttles Nebraska.
That's next on Locked on Hawkeyes.

Part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, now the number one sports podcast network.
Glad to have you aboard with us here.
Let's get into some football and take a look back because, oh, it was so fun in the fourth quarter.
Iowa running away from Nebraska on Black Friday.
And as we do each and every week, we take a look at the grades from pro football focus and see if it matches up with what we saw on the field.
For Mark Grinowski, as we start with the offense, one of his highest rated games of the year, an 88 grade overall, 86.2 in the passing grade is 71.3 run grade for Mark Grinowski.
Tremendous made the plays that were there.
A couple more touchdowns for him, also on the ground, a great performance.
Now, here's a surprising one.
Your top graded running back was Terrell Washington Jr.
Didn't play a ton of snaps in the game.
In fact, I got the snap counts up here.
Let's take a peek at that and see if that matches up.
He played nine in the game, a little bit more than certainly I remember going back and watching that one.
Kamari Moulton led the way with 35 snaps, 10 from Nathan McNeil and Jazzyon Patterson.
He finished with eight snaps in the game.
Nathan McNeil was second, and I think we all saw those little glimpses from McNeil throughout the course of this year.
hoping that he can be something special.
Camarie Moulton grades out with the 69.2, solid dependable.
Same thing with Jazion Patterson and Patterson, boy.
You know, he is a guy that's just going to run hard, doesn't have a ton of wiggle to him.
He just got to go out there and he is going to get the rock.
He's going to put his head down and he's going to get some yards in the game.
Wide receiver, your top graded guy was Reese Van der Z.
And let's hope next season, Reese Van der Z can have a completely healthy season.
freshman year banged up throughout the course of the year this year obviously the weird injury
that he sustained right before the season began he finishes with an 89.7 grade 89 past grade from him
at a 56 run blocking grade Dayton Howard been used a whole lot more in the back half of the year 63 for
him Sam Phillips with the 59 57 out of Jacob Gill and Caden Weechan 52.6 as a wide receiver finally
we go to the tight end position out of the skill position guys and
surprise here it was dj vaughamy who put together another tremendous performance an 85.4 grade overall
92.1 past grade pass blocking pretty good 69 there run blocking not quite as good i want to mention
thomas mire though the true freshman out of clear lake you know we talked a lot about him coming
into the season wondering if he was going to find a role he didn't play a ton but played a lot more
in the games that went uh 65 grade he just popped them
His run blocking grade was a 65.
Him and Hayden Large were the two guys that had the highest grade in that term.
But he was a guy in the limited time we got to see him.
He was popping guys.
I'm excited about the future of Thomas Meyer and excited about the future,
certainly of the tight end position for Iowa.
63 grade for Hayden Large, a 60 for Michael Bert,
Zach Ortworth with a 56.8 for him.
And finally, the offensive line, the big guys up front,
Jennings Dunker ends his Hawkeye regular season career.
with an 84 grade. Trevor Lauk, what a story he's been this year. Once again, outstanding.
Lauk with the best pass blocking grade on the team at 85.5. Best run blocking grade went to Jennings
Dunker. Both Stevens with the 77, Kate Piper with the 70. Bryce George got to play a little bit late.
Leighton Jones, Logan Jones, a little bit lower in his final game during the regular season with a 64.
And then late in the game got to see a bunch of the reserves out there.
In fact, when you take a look at the snap counts for the offensive line,
60 snaps for the starters, Logan Jones, Jennings Dunker,
both Stevens, Cade Peeper, and Trevor Loughke.
Four plays, each for Dotsler, Ms. Linsky, and Cannon-Lettered.
All those guys are going to be in the next for next season.
Leighton Jones, I think one of the anticipated starters next year at one of the guard spots.
He played three plays.
Lucas Allgaier, speaking of young guys, with a big, big upside.
He played one play late in the game along with Kail Winter and Bryce George.
After coming in from Fair State, I thought we were going to see more.
another guy that sustained a weird early injury at the beginning of the season against
Albany still got out there and was able to play a little bit. Let's jump over to the
defensive grades from pro football focus from the win against Nebraska. Defense line,
not real good. And as we saw them carving up the Iowa front, not a surprise here. Max
Llewellyn grades out at the top, a 66 grade for him, Aaron Graves with a 62, as did Jonah Pace,
62 grade also for Bryce Hawthorne all those guys kind of that average range
Kenneth Meriwether with the 61 he's going to have to take a big jump forward next
season Hubert with the 60 Ethan Herkitt a 58 as did Brian Allen
and Jeremiah Pittman with a 49 who's battled injury coming back from an injury
during his final campaign as a hawk guy Carson Shire goes out with a great game
71.7 from him how about his coverage grade and that's been kind of the knock
on Carson Shire at different points this year he grades
out is the top guy out of the linebackers with a 76 grade on that front.
Your lowest grader guy was Jade Montgomery with the 52.
Jane Harrell, who's got back in the mix, is 63.3 for him.
Finally, a defensive back, and I thought this was the most interesting because it definitely
popped, and that was the play of Rashad Godfrey Jr.
We talked about him a ton on the Rapid Reaction podcast and how well he played, how well he
tackled, a force fumble, had a stop that should have been a fourth down stop, that they
gave a good spot to the Huskers in that one. Great tackle grade at 83 out of him.
Coverage grade, okay, average 59.9. 60 is average and against the run,
91.8 for Godfrey. You wonder about his role. Is he a cornerback? Is he more of kind of that
hybrid guy? Would he be a guy that works when they go cash? Is that something that makes sense?
Speaking of young guys, Jacob Wallace, he showed up, I thought, in a big time way.
Good tackle grade out of him. He grades out with the 66. Zach Lutmer,
second with the 70. Jalen Watson, another young name, the 64. Wampa 58 and Cohen Entringer
of 53.7. We'll see about Cohen Entringer and his decision coming back for his final season
of eligibility. If he chooses to, remember, he did go through senior day activities in
the game against Michigan State. Xavier Wampo, of course, his career will come to a close
with the bowl game to wrap things up. But they did it without T.J. Hall and did a really good job
in that one godfrey though definitely the story and that's going to be a guy i think we're going to be
talking a ton about going forward speaking with that let's jump over to the snap counts defensively
too i think that's going to paint a little bit of a picture on the defensive line hawthorne got out there
27 snaps really looking at some of the young guys 23 for kenneth merriweather brian allen with 21
both those guys likely starters next season obviously we're going to see epinessa is going to have
something to say about that you'll say next year i'm getting one of those
spots on the defensive front, what that's going to look like.
And as we get into some portal needs, I think defensive lines a spot, we're definitely
going to be talking about.
Carson Shire, he goes 62 snaps in the game.
Jane Montgomery played 42, talked about Harold 19 snaps for him in the game.
Finally, though, defensive bat.
So you get 62 snaps from Lutmer, 61 each for Deshaun Lee and Xavier Wampa.
45, though, for Rashad Godfrey.
He's played the fourth most snaps out of the defensive backfield.
Galen Watson with 38, 14 for Jacob Wallets.
Boy, he looked really good in that one after entering her left the game just six snaps as he left early in that one.
Good to see those young guys and also good to see Phil Parker for just the fourth time in the last five years.
He sends out a tweet and he does it after they beat Nebraska.
That's the only time.
Phil Parker sends out tweets.
That is football to look back in the big win, 46 over Nebraska.
Love dominating the Huskers.
That one felt good.
Felt good on Sunday as well, as bad as it was on the wrestling mat, pretty good on the hardwood. Iowa. Nice win against Fairfield. We'll talk about that a little bit. What's in front of the Iowa women and the Iowa men. Tuesday, a monster matchup for the undefeated Hawkeyes as they go to Michigan State. We'll talk some hoops. When we come back, locked on Hawkeyes.

Iowa women, nice win on some.
Sunday against Fairfield 86.72 mentioned earlier. This Fairfield team very good recently won 28 games a year ago, got to the NCAA tournament. A couple of years ago, they won 31 games. It's a program that is really good. Even coming out of the Metro Athletic Conference, this is a program that is certainly ascended. And one of the better mid-major teams that you can face, top 100 team by some of the metrics out there. And Iowa gets it done on a day where Fairfield, boy, just felt like they couldn't miss. I mean, 183.3.
in the game from this Fairfield team
got to clean up that three point line a little bit
still overall Iowa
kept him kind of arms distance after that slow start
and got over the hump
we're running out of superlatives already
for Ava Hayden and she's going to have a big matchup next Wednesday
a week from Wednesday with Audie Crooks
and Iowa State still a double double
18 points 16 rebounds she's so smooth
there's a play in the first half she got it
short of the right wing you know 15 feet
away had the defender kind of up on her hip just went up soft jump shot and hit it from there so much
versatility to her game and what kept her off the floor at times a year ago her youth was a part of
it but understanding staying out of foul trouble and definitely is taking that step and you can see
her just so comfortable out there on the floor in a game where you play without chit-chat right
and a game where you play without emily Rodriguez and still to be able to control against a good
mid-major team. I think that says a lot about this team.
Tyler Fearbach was 17 points. Didn't see that one coming as Fearbach was able to.
I really light up the scoreboard when they needed a little bit more scoring punch for three
pointers out of her. We know what she is as an on-ball defender. One of their better on-ball
defenders that you're going to have. McCabe having to help out a little bit of Stremlow.
How about seven assists out of Taylor Stremlow? And just such a versatile game that she has.
A good performance again out of Addy Deal. You're finding her becoming more comfortable
out there. And I like what they're getting as well
from Journey Houston. You know, the first
couple of times we saw her earlier this season
wondered what kind of role there was going to be.
I think a minimum, there's got to be some
kind of role for her. And likely
not going to be the 20 minutes that she played
with Chit Chat
and with Emily out of the game, but
probably going to see her in that
12 to 15 minute range, something like that.
I think her and Addie deal, that's kind of
a realistic expectation when we
get into the depth of Big Ten play.
This team, though,
Playing well, haven't taken on the, took on the most daunting schedule at this point,
and they'll get Ruckers coming up this week.
So kind of weird week as they're off throughout the course of the week.
Saturday will be their Big Ten opener on the road out at Ruckers,
and then, as mentioned, a week from Wednesday, the road trip to Hilton and a loaded Iowa State team
that is playing really well, and 47 points the last time out for Audie Crooks and that one.
And then we got the men's team.
Tomorrow on the program, we will preview the matchup against Michigan State,
Ben McCullum and company making their way to the his own to the Brezlin Center to take on Michigan State.
A Spartan's team that in the past has been a little bit slow out of the gates.
We've seen that.
They're playing incredibly well.
And you look at the matchup at the point guard spot, fears for Michigan State.
He's playing at such a high level, assist or turnover rate through the roof.
This is a guy that is kind of your prototypical point guard going up against Bennett's sturt.
Now, he's not the biggest guy.
And we'll see if the size of sturtz can be a difference.
of this game. Speaking of size, though, that's been the question for this Iowa team.
And there's been a couple of moments, especially in the first couple of games of the year,
