Starting point is 00:00:00 Penn State fired its head coach, lost its starting quarterback for the rest of the season. Now they've got to go to Iowa and play in a hostile environment that is Kinnick Stadium. It's setting up to be a recipe for a disaster, but maybe, just maybe, they can make this a ball game. And score predictions if you've got them. Trent, your expectations for the,
Starting point is 00:01:28 the fighting Nittany Lions as it's really just been a complete downward spiral. I thought interim head coach Terry Smith was honest with us when he met with us on Wednesday when he met with us on Wednesday to talk to the media, but really gave an insight saying that this is tough. This has been really hard on the group. And I just don't know how they can carry any sort of momentum going into a game like Kinnick, especially when Iowa is actually, you know, quietly could contend for a Big Ten conference type. appearance. Yeah. And, you know, this team, they are a completed screen pass away from being
Starting point is 00:02:03 five and one right now with the win against Indiana. Everybody's girl with the curl at this point in the country. And they did it with a backup quarterback in the fourth quarter as Mark Bernowski left with an injury. They complete the screen pass. They run out the clock, have a chip shot field goal to win it. Alas, we saw what happened in that one. So this is the Iowa team that's playing well, an Iowa team that's playing with confidence. And you talk about from the Penn State perspective, obviously the tumult of this past week. And what is the Iowa team that's playing? And what it does look like. And from the Iowa perspective, coming into the year, this is one of the games that was
Starting point is 00:02:32 circled. This was a game that Hawkeye fans were hoping was going to be a night game. And you got that now, I didn't think it was going to be a peacock. We were hoping maybe something a little bit more than that. But that aside, you know, there was so much buildup. Maybe this is a game. I was lost 11 consecutive games against ranked opponents. This will be the one.
Starting point is 00:02:48 Well, Penn State's not ranked anymore after what's happened the last couple of weeks with them. Yet there is always something special about taking on Penn State. And not just for the fan base. This has turned into a very natural rivalry throughout the year. So many great games that we've seen and some not some great great games. But in the end, it has been a big one. And it's a big one for Kirk Farrants too.
Starting point is 00:03:09 And I think maybe the Penn State side forgets about that. This is a game even early in his tenure when they were really struggling. They pulled off the overtime victory back in 2000. And that really ignited their team of what they built themselves into in a Big Ten champion two years later in 2002. That was the early tenure of Kirk Farrants. He's a Pittsburgh guy. He wanted to go to Penn State.
Starting point is 00:03:29 He was talking at the press conference Tuesday about Jack Hamm. I mean, he's an old-timer, and he loves Penn State football. He loved Penn State football growing up, and you could tell. There's always a little extra, little hop in the step when Penn State Week is here. This is an important one. And with all the tumult happening there, I don't think you're going to see Iowa, just think that they can walk into this one, just roll out of bed and pick up a big. Yeah, and with everything piling on top of it, it's not just about losing James,
Starting point is 00:03:56 Franklin and the state of the team. You lost Drew Aller, too, right? It's truly injury to insult, if you will. And not too long ago, I'm not here to say that Taekwon Roberson, last time Penn State was that Iowa is going to be an immediate reflection of Ethan Grunkumeyer trying to find his footing. But it's still not, it's still not an ideal setup. You do not want your QB2 with his first started his first start his first career start at kinnick stadium that is one of the best environments in all of college football like i said i think i was definitely playing above expectations they were looked at as a team that's probably going to finish in the middle but now that the big 10 uh the power structure that we thought it was going to be and assume it's not that
Starting point is 00:04:43 way iowa certainly has an opening and they can make a statement against a penn state team that is still talented but if they don't have the mindset you can see how that that how that how that translates. It's not just losing to Oregon. It's losing the teams that you are significantly at least supposed to be better than. But if your mind's not in it, your heart's not in it, you're not beating anybody. You know, you put on the comments here for people watching on YouTube, will Penn State have any fight? And this is the part that we don't know. I mean, because you could easily see this going one of two ways, right? Either this is what was needed to kick this team in the butt, right? Get them started, revved up. And, hey, we're not going to
Starting point is 00:05:19 win a national championship realistically. But there's still a lot of talent. on this team. You get going, all of a sudden you get some good vives and suddenly it's the Penn State team that we expected or very early. You know, if you see Iowa come out there, run the ball down their throats, you know, opening drive, 10 play 75 yards, eight rushes in there. They're just running it right at them, getting 8, 10, 12 yards a clip. Say, well, I think we can see this one. This, if you're a bet like I am and you open up the Fandual app, this is one where I don't think I want to bet pre-flop, you know, before the game begins. I want to see what happens in the first driver two of this football game because I think that's going to tell us the whole story here.
Starting point is 00:05:55 Is there any Penn State fight left? Do you think that there is? I would like to assume so, but the way I don't think it's going to materialize just yet, I think because they didn't have their normal practice schedule, right? If you're asking me, you know, putting this back on me to answer, no, I don't think so. The direct answer is when you lose Drew Aller, who I guess wasn't the heart and soul that Pence had always needed, but that was still your three-year starting quarterback. That was a guy that people had to rally behind better or for worse,
Starting point is 00:06:23 even though Drew Aller and everything took that step into being a true, fiery, passionate leader. It just never, just, you know, he was shaky in those games, right? He was shaky in the big games. We can objectively say that. But he was still a guy that people look to for leadership. And now you lose your head coach, you lose two leaders, your quarterback and your head coach.
Starting point is 00:06:42 And then it's not a home game where it's a get right game. You're margin for error. If you were struggling against Northwestern and UCLA to find your footing, I can only imagine how that goes on the road when you're trying to correct some mistakes. And now you've got to shrink the playbook because Ethan Grunkumeyer isn't going to have the same leverage that Drew could make checks at the line of scrimmage. He could change the plays. He could make adjustments. He would know what needs to be moved and what doesn't because of how much college football he's played.
Starting point is 00:07:13 Well, Grunk doesn't have that. And against a defensive coordinator like Phil Parker, he should be able to coach circles and just confuse a second year starting quarterback, even though I think Grunkumeyer is going to be much better than Taekwan Roberson was because it's not going to get to the point where you don't even know the cadence. It's that that's the part of this game that is the great unknown. You know, you talk about this side coming into Kinnick Stadium, what we saw the last time that happened in 2021 after Clifford was knocked out.
Starting point is 00:07:44 What has been the conversation this week about Grunk of Meyer? And, you know, I've said earlier in this week and when I break this game down and look at the game plan, I would come up with, I don't think you're just relying on those running backs, right? And this is going to be you're trying to do what has been really the advantage for Iowa football through the last 27 years is you're trying to play Ferrence ball, right? You want to ugly this thing up, keep it close, make a play late, run the football 50 times if you need to. I mean, that is the game plan I come up with. And even if you're only averaging, you know, three and a half yards of carry because everybody knows you're running the ball, just keep doing it. and play it and ugly this thing up you got out Iowa Iowa I think to win this game you can ugly it up you also have the element of surprise and of course we're going to break it down more in just
Starting point is 00:08:27 a moment but I think that's what's going to be key for Penn State is you don't you have I think what three or four passes from Grunkumeyer as your as your scouting film if you're Phil Parker now I'm not saying that's the end all be all but it does make his job a little bit a little bit more difficult and any Codalnicki works better with a mobile quarterback and that's That's actually more of what grunk is. He's not a speedy, you know, Lamar Jackson's, you know, wheels type of quarterback, but he can move a lot better than Aller.
Starting point is 00:08:55 So is that a key here for Penn State's offense? Well, we're going to get into the scouting reports of both teams, what they're going to do on offense and defense and how it could lead to some big place for Penn State and how it could really help Iowa, you know, continue to leverage that home crowd that is coming up next here on this lockdown crossover. It's almost the weekend. to look back and crown this week's MVP on who delivered, powered by DoorDash, just like you can win every Saturday with DoorDash streaks, saving more every time you order, these players delivered
Starting point is 00:09:27 when it mattered most. Let's break it down. Well, for Iowa, we got to give it to Aaron Graves. Of course, I had a great game in the middle of that defense and was inches away from his first career touchdown on the interception. The big man nearly got in four six. Aaron Graves, he delivered in a big time way for the Hawkeyes, when the pressure was on, when the game was still, close against the badgers. He was there. No hesitation. No delay. Aaron Graves is on a streak. And just like Aaron Gray's delivered for the Hawkeyes, DoorDash delivers your Saturdays. With DoorDash streaks, you save every Saturday you order. Well, Penn State's going to do somewhat of the unthinkable because we're going to visit the lines from our friends over at Fanduil. I was just a field goal favorite in this game. You think a team that's so demoralized and the way that we've been talking about it
Starting point is 00:11:38 doesn't have a chance in this one. Well, the odds market, the market says a little bit otherwise, but it's the scattering reports that are going to be key. Andy Codilnicki and Jim Nulls, here's what I'm really intrigued to see, Trent, because they don't, I'm not saying that, hey,
Starting point is 00:11:52 they don't answer to the interim head coach. Terry Smith doesn't have any control or any say here, but you are relying a little bit more on Andy Codell Nikki, in particular because when it comes to the offense, especially Terry being a defensive guy, he's been the cornerbacks coach for forever now over a decade. So he's going to be a little more involved in the defensive game plan, meaning that it's up to tie how tight ends coach for Penn State.
Starting point is 00:12:16 It's up to the quarterback's coach, Danny O'Brien, and Andy Codellnicki to maximize Ethan Grunkumeyer. So if I have to circle any battle in this game, it's going to be Phil Parker versus Andy Codlenicki, because what can you scheme up? How can you help out your backup QB to not get in his head, to build some momentum? Because that was a struggle with Drew Aller.
Starting point is 00:12:38 You had to get him into rhythm. So if you have to get your veteran fourth-year quarterback, into rhythm. It means it's all much that more of a priority on the road in Kinnick, especially when you know what happened last time Penn State visited Iowa like this. Yeah. Like I said, I think the game plan for Penn State's got to
Starting point is 00:12:54 be run, run, and run again. I just try to ugly this thing up and do that. Another component, though, that I think is concerning from the Iowa perspective is what's lining up across from them in that wide receiver group and specifically with Ross. We saw it a year ago and it didn't
Starting point is 00:13:10 go very well as he made the trip with his choice. But three touchdowns in the game. Iowa was helpless in that three different ways. Was it the safety's fault? Was it the cornerback fault? It didn't matter whose fault it was. They didn't cover them. I mean, you just run a wide open down the field and kept Troy in that football game a season ago.
Starting point is 00:13:28 One big difference you might notice. And I don't know game plan, obviously, this week, how different it's going to look. You think of Phil Parker and what he does and Ben, but don't break, bringing pressure at the right time. And just they're so fundamentally sound year after year. he has been bringing pressure more than he ever has in his career you go back to the game against Indiana when they almost pulled off that upset there it was as much blitzing as I can ever remember a Phil Parker team and that's been the case really throughout the course of this season so if you're kind of anticipating same old same old Iowa defensively we know what you're going to see
Starting point is 00:14:01 don't be surprised to see a few more wrinkles because Parker he's been bringing pressure not just with linebackers guys from all over the place corners have been coming safetys have been coming a ton this season. So expect to see some more exotic blix packages coming up on Saturday. Very intriguing and especially it's just kind of just adding to the whole element that Iowa has, the advantage that Iowa has over Penn State that's just, I think, I think Andy Codell-Nicki is going to have to run Grunkumeyer a little more to, you know, use, I hope they lean on K-Tron Allen, but I'm not sure at the end of the day because Trent, I don't know how much
Starting point is 00:14:38 you've seen a Penn State aside from the major. headlines. But Nick Singleton has been struggling a ton. And Singleton was supposed to be that All-American Running Back, everybody declared him better than K-Tron Allen, for the most part. And I was here to say, I always said that, hey, on any given day, Alan can be your 1A and Singleton's your 1B. Well, now it's a clear, you have a clear hierarchy. It is Ketron Allen, a lot of room, and then Nick Singleton. And I'm not exactly sure what happened, but he is just not seeing the game very clearly. I would like Penn State to really run and lean on KTron Allen for the most part as that workhorse running back. And he's capable of it. He doesn't need a 50-50 time share
Starting point is 00:15:18 with with Singleton. But also use some quarter don't not. I'm not talking about RPO specifically. True read options. Grunk can run the football. He's not again, that electric speedster, but he can run the football and at least just keeps your defensive ends honest, maybe takes a linebacker out of a play or two. I would really like to see that from Penn State's offense with a quarterback like Grunk, now available to them full time. Let's go from Grunk to Grann and Mark Rannowski, the Iowa quarterback who mentioned the fourth quarter. He sat out of the game against Indiana sustained a pretty significant knee injury. It was the same knee. He tore his ACL as freshman year at South Dakota State. In fact, after the first couple of games, he took a brace off that he
Starting point is 00:16:01 been wearing his whole career and they re-injures that knee. Now, it sounds like it's pretty significant. He has gotten his way through it. He's not a quitter like our previous quarterback in Cade McNamara that took his ball and walked away after he got hurt. But he actually, that's a conversation for a different day. Zach, Grinowski, he's a tough guy.
Starting point is 00:16:19 He is an incredibly physical runner. But that element, I don't want to say is completely gone, but it's not what it was going back to what they did against Rutgers, what they did in a game like that. He says six rushing touchdowns this year and they're not all on sneaks. I mean, they are designed
Starting point is 00:16:35 quarterback runs. And that's not part of it. Notice right away. He was rolling out against Wisconsin last week. He just kind of stubble. He had that happen three different times a week ago. I don't think there's the stability that you need and that need for it to be a big part of the run game. He'll tuck it. There might be an opportunity. A third and six rolls out, nothing there and he can get the first down and he'll lower his shoulder still on top of it. But I don't think that the same, what made Mark Grunowski such a good quarterback was not just what he was as a pocket passer. More importantly, it's what he did as a runner. And I think that element is not completely gone, but it's certainly dissipated a bunch. Well, I agree with that wholeheartedly, right? That's,
Starting point is 00:17:13 the first thing I said to you off air was, you know, hey, Penn State and Jim Noles are going to have to be conscious of Grinowski as a runner leading up to this point. But when you know the injury reporter, if you've seen the recent tape, it's just not as, because I watched that game against Rutgers and I'm like, man, Grinowski can really run. And I was passing game has been, and I don't mean this disrespectfully. It's been, it's been the, you know, the running joke of college football. It's the same thing with Penn State and wide receivers that it just, here it is again. It's going to be the same thing. Why do you expect anything differently? But at least Grinowski had that element of toughness mixed in with his running ability. And Penn State and Jim
Starting point is 00:17:50 Knowles, they lose Tony Rojas for presumably the rest of the season. At least he's not, he's definitely not available for this game or any games that are nearby. But Rojas was that quarterback spy. can cover sideline to sideline sub four four speed i mean everything you could ask for and somehow jim noles hasn't been able to adjust to that that's why ucela won that game that's why northwestern at times was able to extend drives because preston stone could at least move so as long as granowski is not a true statue and can at least work through a knee injury like work through the leg injury it's still going to get pent state fits and that's what i would say key because the defensive ends just don't stay home they just don't play contain and they don't
Starting point is 00:18:31 have that next player after tony rojas who is that designated quarterback spy i'm not saying you play a spy for the entire four quarters but you need somebody that's going to basically be able to guard granowski at any point in time the offense even with granowski he's not going to run it 15 times of the game can he run it 7 8 you know maybe and that's kind of pick your spots type of thing the good news is for Iowa, the running game, the running backs are finally healthy. The offensive line has played at an incredibly high level all season long. You look at the numbers from pro
Starting point is 00:19:03 football focus. They paint maybe even a better picture than actually I think what reality is regardless. This Iowa offensive line is playing at a high level. Jennings Dunker, preseason, All-American, he's playing like it. And he is much healthier that he was just a couple of weeks ago before the buy. Same thing with Logan Jones. The only question
Starting point is 00:19:19 coming into the year really was at left tackle and Trevor Lauca's been outstanding. He is a guy that had big time offers from across the country. And there was a guy called Caden Proctor. You probably see him play for Alabama. And there's been a lot that's gone out there. If he was in any other class other than Proctor's class,
Starting point is 00:19:36 Trevor Locke would have been the crown jewel. But because of everything that we dealt with there, he kind of was forgotten. This was a four star that you guys, Michigan, Ohio State, Notre Dame, programs like that were involved with him. Iowa doesn't win those kind of recruiting battles very often. And he's showing it here in a sophomore year at left tackle. So the offensive line is good, coupled with the running back. are getting healthy.
Starting point is 00:19:57 We saw the starter. Moulton, he missed a couple of games, including the Iowa State loss, as he was out with a shoulder injury. Xavier Williams thrust down to the scene, a red shirt freshman, he got hurt. He was lost for a couple of games.
Starting point is 00:20:06 So now both those guys are back. You throw in the mix, the guy that's been around the true freshman in McNeil from Florida, and they found an absolute gem in that one. The running backs are getting healthier, coupled with this offensive line. I think if Penn State is not ready to go,
Starting point is 00:20:20 and you mention maybe some of those injury concerns that are there, it might not be with Grinowski. I think I was still going to be able to run the football. No, and you said at the, you know, in the off season that, hey, not enough people talk about Moulton as a running back or being one of the best backs in the entire Big Ten. And it is true when he's 100 percent, he's conservatively top five. So even if Kronowski, Penn State's just getting pushed off of the line of scrimmage,
Starting point is 00:20:44 and we haven't seen them face. We have actually against Oregon, but other than they made UCLA look good. And UCLA looked like they had the worst offensive line in football. and UCLA's own line look good. So that's an issue and still the talent. So is the talent going to finally step up? The odds makers, you know, Trent, I have an interesting, I have an interesting tidbit when we come back from break here about the odds going into this game
Starting point is 00:21:07 and why the odds makers had them at three and a half points and why it swung all the way in favor of Iowa. We're talking about how the Nittany Lions were favored by more than a field goal. Now it's the Iowa Hawkeyes. So what's the context there and can the Nittany Lions pull off somewhat of an upset? when not a lot of people are picking them. We'll make our predictions next here on this lockdown crossover. And this episode is brought to you by Ruggiat.

Wanted to go to the next game to see if these were posting, you know, hey, pay, Penn State's reeling after Northwestern. This was about 1 a.m. Maybe 2 a.m.
Starting point is 00:23:58 And I see, oh, the lines are posted. Oh, that's interesting. Iowa's a 3.5 point, but wait, that's no. Fandul says that Penn State is a three and a half point favorite. I go to X, Twitter, and I post that a screenshot and say, hey, Penn State's actually a three and a half point favorite despite all of this. And everyone's reposting it. It's free money.
Starting point is 00:24:17 It's Penn State fans and Iowa people alike. This is free money. How could, and then the line immediately moves. It shifts. from three and a half in favor of Penn State to two and a half now in favor of Iowa. So how are we reading that, that the odds makers, because they saw the Northwestern game. You could have made, I mean, at that point in time, we knew that Drew Aller was out for the season because James had confirmed it in his postgame press conference.
Starting point is 00:24:40 So what do you make of that Penn State opening as is that just, is that dummy money? No, well, so a couple of different ways. I work in the gambling space and I have a connection to one of the biggest sports books out in Las Vegas and do a lot of work with them. And one of the things that sometimes we forget or don't realize is when it comes to those kind of numbers, we are very reactionary, right? Now, Penn State is a different kind of circumstance
Starting point is 00:25:06 because of the firing of the coach. But when you're looking at strictly talent, talent accusation, even with a backup quarterback, that hasn't changed. This is still an incredibly talented team. And the people in Vegas that are putting together these power numbers, the people at Fandul that are doing it, yes, every week you're going to docket teams, but you're not going to have a team that you had power rated, certainly number
Starting point is 00:25:27 two, three, two weeks ago, and all of a sudden drop them down to 50th. You're not going to take a team even last week before the Northwestern game that you had probably in the top 15 still and drop them down to 50th. And I think it's the same thing here. We overreact to it. And I think that's what you saw in the market. Now, should they dock the more? I think absolutely.
Starting point is 00:25:45 I don't think that the docking was happening. And I think the market has told us so much. But we have to remember big picture. This is still an incredibly talented team. team. And that's what they're doing. That's what those numbers are starting at with those power numbers. Now, they're going to take a side and they're willing to take bets. People think that it's all about and just get 50% on money on one side, 50% on the other, and then rake in that big. Yeah, they're happy to do that. But they'll also take a stand. And I wonder if this is going to be a game where they take a stand
Starting point is 00:26:13 because we're seeing a little bit of that buyback now in that market coming back in now on the Penn State side. When it got north of three, when it got to three and a half, the buyback happened right away. So this is an intriguing one just from the gambling perspective, too, but opening up Penn State as a three and a half point favorite. I wish I had that one, but I have one from the summer from Fandul when the netty lines were favored by 10 and a half. We got that one in the back pocket. Yeah, that 10 and a half is going to go a long way for Iowa there. Yeah, that's, I would definitely like that one at a neutral line, right? I'm not going to pay for that now because I know how expensive it would be.
Starting point is 00:26:47 Regardless, and even if that's offered. But I think it's funny that I had an influence on the lines like that going and point, hey, look over here. Penn State's getting too much respect, a lot of. And that was before James Franklin was fired too. So there is a little bit of context there when in that moment when the line was what it was. But I agree with you that the power ratings and Penn State on paper, but the game is not played on paper.
Starting point is 00:27:12 It's played on the turf. It's played on grass where I would like to think that Penn State's still more talented. But again, if you don't have coordination, If your heart's not in it, you're going to look like a pretty lackluster team. And this team, they, I've declared it as a podcast host. So I wonder how they're feeling their season's over. Yes, there's a lot to play for. There's still six more games.
Starting point is 00:27:34 In theory, could they went out and go nine and three? Absolutely. But if their heart wasn't in it when their season was still going on, when if you beat UCLA, you beat Northwestern, you start to roll in a winning streak, hey, you're back in the college football playoff. I don't know why Penn State staked its season all or nothing on Oregon. That's at least what it felt like when we look back on it. So with the coaching change with James Franklin being ousted and Terry Smith taking over
Starting point is 00:28:01 and those guys can rally around Terry Smith. And I think Terry Smith, you know, just has an opportunity to hit the reset button here. But is that enough to go on the road to Kinnick? If this game was at Beaver Stadium, I would think a little bit differently. I feel more confident and say, okay, you know, the fans are at least going to be a little more in favor of the nitty lines now, no more. There's not going to be any fire Terry Smith chance. There's not going to be any booing because they know what Penn State is at this point in time. They're reeling.
Starting point is 00:28:29 Can you stop it though? Kinnick, though, is not going to let up. And I don't blame. Why would I blame them? So if I'm going for a prediction here, Trent, I think it's close because I think Penn State will actually settle down in the second half. If Iowa builds up enough of a lead in the first half, then I don't. don't know how much, how much credence Penn State will have. But I could see something like Penn State trailing by maybe max 10, something like, you know,
Starting point is 00:28:55 maybe it is 10 nothing, or maybe it's 13 to 3 going into halftime. Penn State settles in, gets those jitters out and then makes this a game, but I still don't know if they can win it. I got 20 to 17, long-winning answer of 20 to 17, Iowa. I do think it's close. And the second half is going to be key for Penn State. You know, when we make these predictions, I like to harken back to past ones. and bring up some memories
Starting point is 00:29:17 and maybe we're going to see the same thing like history repeating itself. I'm going to go back to my favorite time ever in Beaver Stadium, 2009. I was there for the white out with my Hawkeye buddies and boy, did we get to see a good one after Penn State jumped out to a 7-0 lead. I could see Ross maybe having an 80-yard touchdown right away
Starting point is 00:29:34 and all of a sudden, here we go again. But I think ultimately Iowa with that ground game is going to take over special teams, much like Adrian Claiborne had that day, pull away. In fact, let's just make it the same. score. Hawkeyes 21, Penn State 10, a late Hawkeye touchdown, pushes it over as they take control. That's my prediction for the game. Let's get a redo score-wise of what happened in 2009.
Starting point is 00:29:57 I was at that game, too, funny enough. A lot younger as well. I was a kid for that game. That's one of the first losses that I remember from Penn State or one of the ones that stuck with me at the time. So, Trent, glad you brought that up. Glad we got to, glad we got to, you know, hash this one out, talk about the game. I wish Penn State was in a much more competitive space, but we'll say, hey, I'll let the players dictate that on Saturday. And that is where we will wrap up this locked on crossover, talking some Nittney Lions and Hawkeyes.
