Ben McCullum may have made the first big mistake of his Iowa coaching career.
His son's gonna be a Hawkeye and fans are fired up.
You are Locked On Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day.
Hey welcome in, I'm Trent Condon and this is the Locked On Hawkeyes podcast. I've been
covering the Hawkeyes for over 20 years on the radio in the state of Iowa. Currently,
you can hear me on the Iowa Sports Radio Network with stations in Iowa City, Cedar Rapids,
Sioux City, the Quad Cities, along with our flagship station, 106.3 KXNO in Des Moines. You can hear me each weekday from noon to two
talking the world of sports. Today's episode of Lockdown Hawkeyes is brought to you by FanDuel.
Right now new customers can get $200 in bonus bets when your first $5 bet wins. We got some Hawkeye
news and notes to get into today. We have to get into a lot of basketball talk, including the decision by Ben McCollum to bring his son with
them on the team. We're going to talk about that. And Tom Caker
is going to join us from HawkeyeReport.com. The latest
on that perspective, plus a look at Iowa's non-conference
basketball schedule, including the game in Des Moines against
Bucknell. We'll get into all that and more coming up with Tom
Caker. But we begin today in what feels like a little bit of an emergency after the press released the
Friday news dump comes down from the University of Iowa that Peyton McCollum is the latest
member of the Iowa Hawkeyes. Now, on the top, we have alluded to this at times. There has
been a lot of buzz and certainly from where I am in the western suburbs
of Des Moines, I've heard a lot about this.
So this was going to happen.
This was a foregone conclusion that this should not
be a surprise, because this has been out there a ton.
So we want to start with that.
This isn't coming out of left field.
If you've been paying attention, if you've been listening,
if you've been reading, if you've been talking to people,
if you've been listening in a daily listener to Lockdown Hawkeyes, as you should be, and
thank you for that, you know that this is something that has been in the works for a
long time. But there's two parts that I think are sticking in the craw for some Hawkeye
fans. First, it's the last name. It's McCollum. And because of what we have gone through with nepotism recently, that frustrates people.
It's been an angle that has been there and been such a negative inside of Iowa athletics
that it becomes a problem.
And we start first with the basketball program.
And what we saw with
Raymond Caffrey bringing his two sons aboard. Now there is no doubt it was not
a stretch for either of those guys to be Iowa Hawkeyes. They were both rated as
top 150 players nationally. It wasn't a talent thing. You know for both of those
guys there were a number of different issues. And it was also at times playing
time. There was also the question is, you bring in a guy
like Connor McCaffrey when he committed to Iowa, and he was
trying to do the baseball thing and that didn't work. It was
just, it was too much. And we've seen that happen for multi
sport athletes so many times. We're seeing it potentially
currently with Ben Keeter
trying to do the wrestling and the football. It's incredibly difficult to be able to pull
both of them off at the Big Ten level. But with Connor, it wasn't just that he was there.
And Connor did a lot of great things. I was a supporter of Connor, and certainly when
he started to shoot the ball a little bit better later in his career. But he did so many important things. He ran the team. He got him in the right spots. He
knew where everybody was supposed to be. He was that coach on the floor. There were a lot of good
things there. And though it didn't show up all the time in the score column, he was a good piece
to the Iowa basketball team. And with Patrick, it was always waiting for that moment for it all to
click. It wasn't a talent thing. Patrick was a more talented basketball player,
certainly than Connor was coming out of high school. The size, the athleticism that he had,
it just never clicked. And we knew there was a ton happening, obviously, in his life.
But because of that, and also because we saw them trotting out there, and you see
at times the Murray twins sitting on the bench, and you see them out on the and that led to the negativity. Now if they would have been incredibly successful with those
guys there that also would have been a different conversation but that wasn't the case. But really
the biggest part I think still for a lot of people is what we saw in the disaster of the Todd Licklider
era. France kids were solid big 10 players, maybe not the levels we wanted,
probably didn't reach the levels of top 150 players coming out, but there were at minimum,
they were okay. That was not the case when John Licklider was brought in. John Licklider
was brought in as a walk on. John Licklider didn't have options. John Licklider might
have been the sixth or seventh best team on his high school team at City High.
And yet he got an opportunity to be a walk-on.
That bothered people.
Even before he played a minute.
And then he had to play because of defections, because of injuries.
He ultimately had to pay.
And that negativity was hideous.
It was unfair to the family.
It was unfair to the kid or the young man in John
Licklider. But you put your son in that situation bringing him on when, frankly, he wasn't deserving
of the spot. And that leads now to Peyton McCollum. I am not a scout. That is not what
I do. I broadcast games and I see a lot of them. I watch a lot of hoops.
And from what I saw from Peyton McCollum, this is not a Big Ten basketball player.
This is not a high major D1 basketball player. I'm not even sure if he is a mid-major
D1 basketball player, at least at the scholarship level. Watching him at Waukee Northwest, and I
believe I did six or seven
Waukee Northwest games this past season, he's a good high school player. And that's all
well and good. And if Pete McCollum comes in and he never sees a minute of playing time
outside of blocks, outside of late game situations, and things are going incredibly well, this
is not a problem at all.
It's not.
If Iowa hits the ground running like I believe that they will, if Iowa becomes an NCAA tournament
team in year one, if they're in a sweet 16 in the first couple of years, this is not
a story at all.
It is right now, but it's also late May, right?
It's going to be a long time before we get into October practices are starting and we
start to see this team out on the floor in November, long ways away.
And at that point, it'll for the most part be forgotten.
But and that's what you have to say, but things go poorly.
If suddenly you have maybe a concern in the
locker room, if something comes up, there are going to be people that are going to point
to having a coach's son on the roster, that could be a problem.
Scholarship player, walk-on, doesn't matter.
There is a component.
Now, I personally believe that Ben McCollum is a good enough coach that it's not going
to be a problem.
That the culture that he's going to build is not going to lead to the issues that are
out there.
But because we have dealt with this, we dealt with it with the Lickletters, we dealt with
it with the McCaffrey's, we dealt with it with the Ferences and the coaching staff.
And when we went through all those different things, us as Hawkeye fans, it was bothersome.
I don't think it's something that Ben McCollum should have done.
If he asked for my opinion, and he wouldn't, but if he did, I would say, no, let him go
on play somewhere else, wherever that somewhere else is.
It's not worth the headache.
And in almost any other program in the country, it's not a concern.
It's not a question, but it's because us as Hawkeye fans have seen the way that this has gone with the last two basketball coaches. We've seen the way
that this has gone also in the football program because nepotism for the University of Iowa and
the athletic department has been such a big part. That's why it becomes a big story. On its own,
Ben McCullum can do whatever he wants. He's the head coach. It's only because of the situation that we're warranted.
That's why we're here.
I believe in Coach McCollum.
I believe that he is going to get this right,
and this isn't going to be an issue.
But for some people, it will be.
Right, wrong, or indifferent, that
is the reality that we live in.
Peyton comes in, walks on, is a backup,
is a practice player, and they have a great environment, and that's all good. It's not
a big deal. But you're creating something that could be a big deal down the line. That
would be the concern. We continue on the Lockdown Hawkeyes Podcast. Let's get into some more
Iowa basketball. Iowa making their way to Des Moines. Tom Kaker from HawkeyeReport.com is going to join us. Plus that game against Bucknell. Did that
give us a little insight into the way that we're going to see Iowa scheduling under Ben
McCollum? We'll talk about that. Plus a little football talk. All as we continue on the Locked

Are you aware of the Cooper de Jean celebrity softball?
Why this, this weekend? It is this weekend.
I, it's the first time I've heard.
Oh really?
The target, the marketing didn't work for you.
Huh?
But I heard the a home run Derby did.
Yeah.
Yep.
So here's who's coming to this event.
Cooper de Jean.
Yes.
He has to be a good start.
Riley Moss, Devontae Smith, AJ Brown, Dallas Clark, Brandon Jones from the Broncos,
Will Lutz from the Broncos, Sam Ellinger, Darius Slay, Alex Singleton, Jay Higgins,
Jack Cornard, Reed Blankenship, CJ Beathard amongst the names at Principal Park.
Pretty good list.
It's a great list.
Why are they keeping it a secret? You going? Well, no, but I think we should spread the word. Bethard amongst the names at Principal Park. Pretty good list. It's a great list.
Why are they keeping it a secret?
You going?
Well, no, but I think we should spread the word.
Well, Cooper, I mean, if he wants to be on the air, we probably can find a spot for him.
I wish that we would have known this, man.
Well, next year.
So this is the first year of this, right?
This is year two, I believe.
Is it really?
Yes.
Oh my God. I, I believe. Yes.
We've got to touch. I'm telling you, we're we're dumber because we don't get the newspaper in our front door.
I am. That's a part.
It is for sure.
It is for sure.
I read the sports section, one register dot com.
That's it.
When the paper came to the front door,
every section except the comics and the TV thing, you miss those.
Oh, God.
I had no idea. If you got tickets to it, enjoy it. Sounds like a hell of an event. It miss those. Oh God. I had no idea.
If you got tickets to what enjoy it sounds like hell of an event. It really does.
Tom, did you know about this? Tom Cakers?
I did.
You live in the Eastern part of the state and you knew all proceeds.
All proceeds will go to the, uh, the, the, the children's hospital.
Awesome. Keeps getting better. I shouldn't say all proceeds, but a portion of the overall ticket sales is what released. I haven't seen it now. Buy now and
support the University of Iowa Steed Family Center. That's great. Yeah. Yeah. If people
are interested, Zach Johnson will be having his golf thing up in Cedar Rapids. I think it's June 30th, but I'm
not sure. But Coop's playing in that. Is that what Caitlin played in last year?
That was two years ago. That was a John Deere classic. That was the John Deere classic. And
they're going to have Riley Moss and T.J. Hopkinson playing at the John Deere Classic on the Wednesday of Pro-Am Day
this year. Get to practice Riley Moss. You got a hell of a defense you're gonna be playing for and
We'll see where that goes. Anyways, thanks for coming on Tom
I appreciate it didn't get to your normal introduction HawkeyeReport.com
I wanted to do that for you. So the Bucknell game was announced.
Look, I get it.
It, they're, they're going to play those type of non-conference games. It's right before Christmas.
Last one before Christmas.
Why not move it to the capital city, right?
Give the Hawkeye fans an opportunity that maybe it doesn't work that you, you
know, have to jump in the car and drive what it would be on that night.
Does a couple hours to see the team play. I think it's a great idea.
The competition won't be there, but it's an opportunity for, I think Drake fans may be
interested to see what their team looks like in the black and gold this year. I think this is a
win for a lot of people, Tom. I like the idea. Yeah. And there's a kid on the Bucknell team that
Yeah, and there's a kid on the Bucknell team that local time. Yes, it went to Valley and
So that's part of this the Bucknell coach wanted to play a game in the state of Iowa So it kind of worked out. So it was originally I think gonna be the st. Louis, Iowa game and
And I don't think then and the sales coach I think our friends and didn't want to didn't want to play each other
So they and the sales coach, I think are friends and didn't want to didn't want to play each other.
So they pivoted to Bucknell. So got that at that game. So we'll I think they've got a
couple more games they need to fill before they've got their full non-conference slate.
So hopefully don't end up playing St. Ambrose College or San Ambrose University I can't send it like like Drake did last year. You're starting to run out of some options now
Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but but now was like raked in the 220s
This is not the 300 plus can our net rank teams that we saw in the past
Do we read anything into it that they're using one of these bygames and not taking on one of the dregs here?
Or is it just one game and let's not speculate until we see the whole thing
Yeah, I think part of it part of the challenge honestly is that a lot of this schedule stuff was
Was left to them and that was like not a top priority of out of the gate. They were trying to build a roster.
So now you're just trying to scramble to fill out your games. But you know, they've got the Xavier game, they and that it's what four of them and you get
the Bucknell game now.
So it's just, there's limited opportunities for it, but I, I don't know that Ben's going
to come out of the gate, uh, trying to schedule, uh, a bunch of, a bunch of bears.
Now he's just gonna, he's just gonna try and schedule some, some competent games and get
them to the
To the the meat potatoes of the Big Ten schedule. Can you fill us in what happened with Ashton Williamson and his?
vision
Was it a mutual parting of ways because we never saw anything official he announced on Instagram you guys
I know and all the recruiting sites had stuff about it
So kind of how did this all shake out and does it mean as I heard you interviewing a Sasha on your
podcast earlier in the week that maybe they got somebody else in the cards
yeah it it seems like it was kind of like a mutual thing from what I
understand but everybody's kind of being coy about it when I bring it up so it's
just it just seems like it's mutual. But
yeah, I talked to Josh Sash and asked him if they were done. And he said, well, one,
maybe two. And I was like, doing the math and I'm like, oh, two. That kind of puts you
in a different situation. But you know, the big man markets kind of picked over. And then
of course, I immediately went to like, oh, maybe they're going to get that kid from high point.
And then like 30 minutes later he commits to us.
So, um, so yeah, I think, you know, the interesting thing that he said.
They're, um, the teams getting on campus, you know, as we speak today, this weekend,
um, all the players are going to be gathering in Iowa City and then they're
going to start workouts on Monday.
And he said, you know, we may think we know what we need, but after we do workouts for
a week, we may realize we need something different.
So it's probably going to be something where they're going to wait a week and then kind
of reassess based on what they've seen in practice as far as what they need. Will the media have an opportunity to watch practice or to certainly get some media
veiled as McCollum tries to spread the word about his roster? Might they be more willing,
maybe this year, year number one, to allow us to take a peek behind the curtain?
Yeah, I think that's going to happen, but I think it might be a little bit before we,
I don't think they want us in there week one.
Right, right.
That makes sense.
But I think maybe, you know, I know we're getting a whole bunch of opportunities for
the women's team, which is awesome.
And hopefully we'll get a few for the men's team.
Can't hurt to sell a few tickets, getting to look at these teams.
And you know, there might be some things they do, you know, would be interesting.
And I think they're at least kicking the tires on it is do one of those kind of exhibition games
that some places have done for charity, you know, that are open to the public.
And I think that might help kind of fill that void of, oh, we're not playing these
powerhouse conference, powerhouse non-con games, but hey, what if we play an
exhibition against, you know, Mizzou or somebody like that, or, you know, I don't know Mizzou or somebody like that or you know, just a kind of a fun
Exhibition game against somebody that's that's that's pretty decent. I think that would be interesting dial a fan. How about Drake?
You know Texas tech yeah, you know Ian
Yeah, yeah, they played, Ian, Ian. Played last year.
Yeah.
Yeah.
They played in the secret scrimmage last year and, and Grant McCaslin are really good friends and I know Texas Tech is going to probably be good again this year.
It will be.
Yeah.
And you know what?
They've got loads of money down there.
They sure do.
I'm seemingly in an endless supply.
And that was the first inkling that, you know, Drake might have something here
because they play Texas Tech really tough of memory serves in that.
I mean, I didn't see it obviously, but just the reports that followed that
this was a, a nip and tuck affair.
Um, so I mean, I don't expect McCollum's streak of winning his
conference year to continue this year.
Um, but it sounds like he's a hell of a coach.
I can't wait.
So what should expectations be Tom, when it comes to his team this year. Um, but it sounds like he's a hell of a coach. I can't wait. So what should expectations be Tom, when it comes to his team this year,
realistic and I'm going to pull your board at Hawkeyereport.com.
What is it? What is the realistic expectations? I think,
I think the expectations of fans right now is that they'll be in the NCAA
tournament. Yeah, I think so too. I really do. I think that's the,
and I think that's
a fairly reasonable expectation
but
You know, they made that jump from
But it's only like one guy now it's Sturtz who made that jump from D2 to
To D1 level and now to the highest level, the rest of those guys only made the one jump just to Drake.
But they've got guys that I think are intriguing.
I'm interested, but I will say this.
I think that the jump from the Valley to the Big 10 is, I think, a little bit larger
maybe than what you think. And it's going to be a challenge for them. There's going
to be an adjustment because, you know, Fran used to always say, it's 20 monsters and he's
right. I mean, it is 20 monsters. And I don't know the Valley was all that great last year.
It was good, but it wasn't that wasn't like a vintage Valley year last year.
Yeah. And outside of Bradley and Drake, I think there was a pretty big gap when
you get to that next tier team. I'm definitely with you on that part. Hey,
Tom, kickoff times are out. We got a couple of, for many fans,
I think a disappointing 11 AM kickoff time, one Black Friday against Nebraska,
the other the Cy-Hawk. What's better though?
11 AM for the Cy-Hawk game or for the Black Friday
Nebraska game, which one do you like more at 11 AM?
Uh, well, I'd rather the Cy-Hawk game be a little later.
Uh, I don't mind the, I don't mind the 11 AM for Nebraska, uh, just because,
um, and I'm completely selfish on these things because I got to travel, you know,
I got to drive home after the game and it's a little bit easier and
Get home after an 11 a.m. Game and get back back home. So that's
Totally selfish for me. I don't mind if they're 11 a.m.
as much as some people do and I know people are already complaining well, we're probably getting like early games for
do and, and I know people are already complaining. Well, we're probably getting like early games for Oregon and Penn State.
And we get 6 PM games for UMass and Albany.
And for all of the Albany game, the weird 5 PM star.
I can't remember where you have one of those, but that's the world we live in.
Isn't it?
Yeah.
TV dictating everything.
How many night games will there be legitimate night games, Tom?
I think one of the big tens late one of the one of the Oregon or Penn State games is going to be a
night game. I think my god. They're both marquee, obviously. Who do you prefer Trent? Who do you
want to see at night under the lights? Oh, maybe those hideous see Oregon uniforms coming in. I
Know what? Yeah, you know what Trent? I would rather see I will play Oregon at 11 a.m. Because it's not body clock
Yeah, that's not a bad thought either and we maybe saw that against Washington last year
They're just something about that Oregon game and maybe it's cuz on the lockdown network
we got a loud mouth working fan
that runs the Oregon side of things.
But I think I was got something for them.
It's going to be cold.
It's going to be a different kind of environment.
And if it is a night game, I don't know.
Am I crazy here?
Could, can Iowa hang around against Oregoners?
Is that just different in the pace that they play at?
I, is Dante more good?
We don't know. We think more good? We don't know.
We think.
I don't know.
That's the thing.
He threw a lot of interceptions that one year, uh, you know, with a pretty good
coach, so, um, I'm, uh, I, I'm going to.
Withhold judgment on them until I see you that Dante Moore is good.
I, you know, he might be good, but
You know Phil Parker's
There's a graveyard of guys like Dante Moore that Phil Parker has
Gotten, you know, so see yeah We'll see what did his UCLA team do that year that he was a crew member. What was that two years ago?
Yeah, that was chips. That was chips last year there
Did they get to a bowl under I don't think they did. I don't think they got to a bowl game Yeah, I don't think they did either. Well, we'll see
Yeah, I kind of want to see Penn State. I'm like, well, we'll get what we get right?
We'll be happy with it Tom kicker. What do you got coming up this week at Hawkeye report comm?
You know, we've got a big thing up right now that coming up this, this
month is a bunch of official visits for football.
I mean, and they used to do just like the one big weekend at the end of the month.
Now these kids kind of dictate when they're like, yeah, we're coming in this weekend.
They're not going to hang for your, your, your your your big party at the end of the month
So that a whole preview of three big weekends where they're gonna have official visitors
So it's gonna be a huge month for football recruiting. So we've got that previewed, you know, that'll start next weekend
So it's a busy time coming up and hopefully that includes a lot many opportunities to talk to McCullum and the
squad as well here in the weeks ahead. Good stuff Tom Kaker. Thank you as always buddy. We'll talk
to you next week. Thanks Tom. Thank you. Yep, good to talk to you. Tom Kaker, HawkeyeReport.com.
And the recruiting world going to be heated up with Tom Kaker, a big appreciation to him for joining us here today.
All right.
Some baseball news over the weekend, some big news and big names entering the transfer
portal.
Iowa baseball in crisis mode.
Kind of feels like it when we come back locked on Hawkeyes.
All right, so back with you one final time, locked on Hawkeyes, I'm Trent Condon. Thanks for being with us and making locked on Hawkeyes your first
listen every day. Shout out to you every dayers with us every single time.
Really appreciate each and every you with us throughout the course of this one.
All right, let's get into the final news of the weekend. And suddenly, what turned out
to be a pretty crazy Friday for Iowa baseball. A couple of major, major names and big expectations
for what they were going to be next season for Iowa baseball.
As Reese Moore, a first team all Big Ten performer, a Swiss Army knife, do everything kind of
player, an elite bat, a local kid from the state of Iowa, grew up in Forest City, finished
his career here over in Van Meter on the west side of Des Moines is in the portal.
And then you couple it with Anthony Watts in the portal. He's been a big part of that
staff pitching staff for Iowa the last couple of years. This is big. These are a couple
of big names, but this is also reality. Now, two directions you can go. You can speculate
that there's a reason behind that and the way the season ends, that there's tumult.
That seems like a bit of a stretch that that is the case and how this is playing out, that
suddenly guys are going to do it. But the reality is Iowa baseball is not well funded
and the donor base is not high. And Rick Heller has done as much as he possibly can with the
limited resources that he has. But until people support the team, until financially,
NIL funds are even mid-tier in the Big 10, this is going to happen. And this is our new reality,
and an opportunity for these guys to go out and make real money, because there's real money
an opportunity for these guys to go out and make real money. Because there's real money in the SEC.
There's real money in the ACC.
There's real money in the Big 12 for baseball.
That there isn't in the Big 10 and certainly not at the University of Iowa.
A tough blow, tough one to swallow, but this is our new reality.
And when we look at a big picture, and this is something we're going to be tackling on an episode next week, what does this say about the University of Iowa and the rest of the
sports, the Olympic sports?
Are we coming to an age where dropping sports is going to be happening?
In this new era of college athletics, is that the direction we're going to go?
Feels like it.
And is Iowa baseball one of those programs that's on the chopping block, definitely makes you
wonder even with the successes of this year and after it finishes up and after the retirement
of Rick Heller, whenever that happens, what does that mean for this program going forward?
Something to chew on over the weekend.
