Starting point is 00:00:00 How concerned should the Iowa defense be? Their back seven struggled against Rutgers. And here comes Indiana. We break it down. Plus best bets. Todd Bromelcamp joins us today. Locked on Hawkeyes. You are Locked on Hawkeyes.

Starting point is 00:00:51 things down. Take a look back one final time at the Rutgers matchup. I'll look forward to what we expect to see this week against Indiana. Got some questions for you. And of course, we'll make our best bets of the week, some of the games that we're looking at here on the college slate coming up presented by Fanduel all to come. Todd, good to see you once again. Thanks for joining us in Iowa, back to Kinnick Stadium this week in a spot that we've seen a lot. And it's been an interesting week because I'm talking out of both sides of my mouth all week long, right? There is the analytical side, the number side, the betting side, the Hawkeye history side. There's just so many ways to take this game this week and certainly a big matchup against.
Starting point is 00:01:30 Indiana will get to how you been doing this week i'm good i'm not quite sure what day of the week it is but i think it's wednesday that's why i got my pink on i used to do that when i was on the radio so i'm glad you i'm glad you're talking about the hawk guys i'm still looking for a job but we got plenty to talk about after after what they did to rutgers yeah um a game 3828 that finishes with iowa having to score and todd throughout the course of the summer one thing that I talked about often here, and on the radio was there was going to be games this year. I truly believe that I was going to have to score to win. I didn't think it was going to be against Rutgers that they were going to have to do it.
Starting point is 00:02:06 But when he looked at what they have, Oregon, Penn State, USC, those definitely at the top of the line, that they cannot just hope, well, let's see if we can get through this 1310, right? The way that they've been built the last three or four years, it wasn't going to happen. And they did that on Friday night. I think it was eye opening. and they didn't do it with gaudy numbers by any means, but they moved the football. And speaking of analytics,
Starting point is 00:02:29 there were some numbers out there in some of the yards per play and what they should have scored in the game, that this is an Iowa team that actually should have scored 45 in this game when you look at some of the analytical numbers. So they were humming. Ruckers' defense isn't great. I mean, you put that also in there, as we saw other teams be able to move the ball against them.
Starting point is 00:02:47 But after the struggles early on, it was that positive step forward, I think that we all needed to see from this Hawkeye offense. Yeah, I was not expecting to be entertained by that game last Friday night. And there I was on the couch from start to finish and got the big returns from Caden Weechin. I think the last time we talked, we were talking about Iowa special teams kind of needing to step up. And they certainly did in that game. I thought Mark Grinowski looked a little bit better.
Starting point is 00:03:14 And we've seen this Iowa, we've seen this from Iowa in the past where they get off to slow starts and they become a better team in the second half. I think you saw some, you saw Phil Parker make some adjustments in the second half that paved the way for that Iowa victory. They're certainly going to need to carry those adjustments over this week because they're not playing a Rutgers again. Yeah, the step-up in competition, it is immense. And what we saw from Indiana, before we get to the Hoosiers, as we kind of take a look back, you mentioned Phil Parker and the adjustments that we saw in the second half of the game,
Starting point is 00:03:51 that one scoring drive that they had in the second half. And after those first three drives, the only points they put up, I was, so I was called high school football on Friday night. So I had it on up in the press box, but I wasn't really seeing anything. So by the time the game got over, I was locked in. And I was sitting in the parking lot like a weirdo watching on my iPad. And I just sat there for an hour watching the end of the game. But that was one of the drives that I saw in the initial go through. And at that point, it wasn't that I was playing poor defensively.
Starting point is 00:04:20 Deshaun Lee was there. T.J. Hall was there. The safeties were there. Calic Manus was just making incredible throws, and those wide receivers were making plays. And I walked away not knowing how those first three drives once, saying, well, they're playing like this. There's no reason that they're doing that.
Starting point is 00:04:35 So I guess I wasn't as discouraged on that and even seeing that scoring drive that maybe I was initially from the defense. Those adjustments, though, they kind of go hand in hand because, I mean, that's a great buildup, a great kind of JV matchup with the RPO system and what they were doing, a lot of those slants with the big receivers. That's what they're going to see this week with Indiana.
Starting point is 00:04:53 Yeah, if you would have given me 10 guesses as to who was the quarterback for Rutgers last week, and Aethon Kelly McManus would not have been one of my 10 guesses. I thought we knew what we've seen enough of him in the past. He looked like a completely different quarterback, and he was zipping the ball in there. Their receivers were making plays, and I think it's a sign of things to come that when Iowa goes up against a quarterback that is making throws and has some confidence, that they could be in for some trouble. one of those adjustments that we saw was a whole lot more blitzing. And a big part of that was Carson Shire.
Starting point is 00:05:30 He was coming in a bunch on those blitz packages and basically bringing Wampa up. You know, he was kind of providing the coverage there and moving up from his safety spot and doing that. One of the things is both the linebackers, both of him and Herald, they've looked to step slow. And I'm not surprised by that by Harold, big middle linebacker type. And, you know, we've been just over the last five years accustomed to seeing ridiculous after. with Jack Campbell and the range that we saw from Jay Higgins. Jane Harrell never really was that kind of guy. He's more of your old school traditional thumper guy, right?
Starting point is 00:06:02 Your friend is that's not going to beat you sideline to sideline. I have been surprised by tire, though, because athletically, we always heard it was the injuries with him, right? That was holding him back. It was the injuries. I thought athletically it would hold up. Maybe it's just the lack of reps, but that does leave me a little bit concerned that even the guy that you thought
Starting point is 00:06:19 was going to be able to move sideline to sideline. And we haven't quite seen that level yet from Carson Shire. And a friend texts me around, I think it was halftime, maybe the beginning of the third quarter, that said he thought this was the worst group of linebackers Phil Parker's ever had. I don't know if I would go that far, but I mean, they leave a little bit to be desired here. And I think the optimistic Iowa fan hopes, once again, that this is a typical Kirk Ference team that is getting better incrementally with each passing week. week. And maybe some of these problems will be solved by the time November rolls around.
Starting point is 00:06:55 Problem is right now it's not even October yet. And there's still a lot of football left to be played. And they've got to solve some of those issues and get up to speed pretty quickly because the Indiana's, the Oregon's, those offenses are going to be able to take way more advantage. And we saw Rutgers move the ball pretty well. But I am not ready to write that group off just yet, but you're absolutely right. There's a little bit of reason to be concerned in my opinion. And you kind of couple it with the three young linebackers, the registered freshman that we heard so much about. Preston Reese, he was on Bruce Feldman's freak list before the season began, Buffington, all these Eastern Iowa guys, the three over there from that area, that little
Starting point is 00:07:35 triangle around Iowa City. And let's say it does go poorly, you know, this week against Indiana. We again see those linebackers become a problem. You do wonder, with a by week then in front of them before the matchup against Wisconsin, if that is the time. It's time to take the training wheels off. And maybe if these guys do have a little bit more athleticism, learning on the job, you go back to, now James Morris, it was because of injury. He was thrust in there, and he wasn't right.
Starting point is 00:07:59 I mean, you can see that right away. And the guy that he built him up to, Christian Kirksey struggled early in his career, turned into Anthony Hitchens coming over for running back and what he turned into, we've seen this before. But just in the back of my mind, that's kind of been a thought here. If we see that, if the linebackers really struggle again,
Starting point is 00:08:16 if it's time to get those young guys out there a little more. Yeah, I mean, one thing that Kirk Ferrens has shown in the last decade or so is that he's way more open to kind of shuffling the deck and making some changes than he may have been in the past. And you're right, getting ready to go into a buy week is usually an opportunity where maybe they take a look at some of those positions. So I don't want to say that there's guys that are fighting for their jobs this week. It's a tough enough task to slow down Indiana as it is. but it's going to be incumbent on those guys to make some progress and make some plays this weekend in order to maybe hang on to their job. I don't necessarily think the leash is all that long at this point,
Starting point is 00:08:56 given some of the things that we saw, especially in that first half in Piscataway. Todd Bromacam joining us today on lockdown Hawkeyes. We'll continue here. And let's take a look forward. This Indiana team looked as good as maybe anybody in the country a week ago with that win against Illinois. How difficult is a spot going to be for the Hawkeyes or are we setting up for another Kirk Barrett special?
Starting point is 00:09:17 We'll talk about that as we continue. Locked on Hawkeyes. Mazda crafts cars for those who do more than simply move. Thanks for being with us and making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day. Todd to Indiana, we turn the page.
Starting point is 00:11:38 We don't have a 24-hour rule. like Kirk Farrantz has. But I mentioned going into the break, the Farrant special, right? The Kurtz special where team is down and out. One of the greatest examples is, what, six, seven years back, they went out to Penn State.
Starting point is 00:11:53 They got absolutely blitzcreen. Looked as bad as an Iowa team did. Gave up nearly 600 yards of offense. I think it was $5.99 in that game. And here comes Michigan. Rang second in the country was throttling everybody they played. Iowa hangs around, gets a safety.
Starting point is 00:12:09 When's it on the walkoff, 14, 13? It's happened before, but it hasn't happened in a while. And I think that's kind of the divide that we're going through right now. You can go back in history and come up with examples. We don't have very many recent examples. Yeah, and you've got to go by recent history, you know, especially when Kirk has been here for 27 years. You can go way back and find anything to fit whatever narrative you want.
Starting point is 00:12:34 But college football more than ever, ask Mike Gundy, is a what have you done for me lately business. And the Hawkeyes have not had a great deal of success against ranked teams, like the one that's coming to Kinnick Stadium this weekend. So, again, this is one of my big questions about the Big Ten at the beginning of the season was, would Indiana be able to come back for an encore? And I doubted Kurt Signetti and I feel like an idiot for doing so because all the guy does is win. I have Google right in front of me.
Starting point is 00:13:04 I should have known that. But your number two, they look even better to me in your number two than they. they did last season. They do. And you start at the quarterback position with Mendoza. I love the pickup coming into the year. That's one thing I talked about in the summer. I thought they made an upgrade there.
Starting point is 00:13:22 I just didn't think it was going to translate in every different piece of it. Now, I do want to throw this one thing out there. So I watched last night two of the kind of condensed version of the games on YouTube. Their opener against Old Dominion where they won 27, 14. They gave a touchdown right away, running quarterback ran for like 80 yards for a score and gave up one late, but I wasn't overly impressed. And even the domination of Kennesaw State, I guess there were a few more warts than I anticipated.
Starting point is 00:13:48 This team, they're good. They're really good. And it's not to say that Indiana's not because they are. However, there was a little bit more there that led me to say, you know what, this can be one of these games where Iowa hangs around. But again, it can't be 1413, like against Michigan. It can't be 6'4 against Penn State. This has to be a different type of game.
Starting point is 00:14:09 game. Iowa, I think they can move the ball well enough to get it done. And once again, they're probably going to have to win special teams. I think this game, this game is going to be one or lost in the first half. If they come out and play the way that they did against Rutgers against this Indiana team, they're probably not going to win the game. We're conveniently leaving out what Indiana did to Illinois last weekend. Now, I don't think that Illinois was a top 10 team nationally. But I think they were a top 25 team and Indiana completely, as Kurt Signetti said on Monday or Tuesday, whenever his weekly news conference was, they broke their will. I mean, you've got this guy out there talking like Ivan Drago coming to Iowa City and just
Starting point is 00:14:53 they ran for 312 yards. They held Illinois to two yard, two rushing yards on 20 carries, seven sacks. This is a complete Indiana football. This is unlike any Indiana football team anyone has ever seen. They are playing at a high level. The letdown factor. Todd, as we'll get to a little bit later, you are a better like I am. Are you a subscriber to that theory? And certainly in college football, the letdown look ahead.
Starting point is 00:15:22 Now, they have a bye week after this one, but they have another big matchup with Oregon on tap after that. Still, do you subscribe to the theory of a letdown and certainly after performance like that? I do. But again, I go back to Kurt Sikers. Nettie. He strikes me as a coach that really will not allow for that to happen. More often than not, yeah, you see it. Teams coming off a big win, have a little bit of a letdown. Iowa's, let's not forget here. They've got an extra day or two to prepare for Indiana because they
Starting point is 00:15:52 finished up on Friday. But I just, I think this is one of those spots where Indiana's, Indiana, and by far is the best team that Iowa has played so far this season, and that's no slight to Iowa State. But after watching what they did Illinois last weekend, they left no stone unturned in that game, and they made Illinois look absolutely just downright normal. And again, I was fairly high on the Illini coming into the season, and I didn't finish that game. I wound up out by the fire pit for the second half. I was bored by it. They've got some firepower.
Starting point is 00:16:34 And I think the big question is, what is Indiana going to do defensively against Iowa? Because if they put pressure on Mark Grinowski, as I said, they had seven sacks last week against Illinois, if they make life difficult for Grinowski and Iowa can't run the ball to set up the pass, you might hear the boo birds in Kinnick Stadium on Saturday.
Starting point is 00:16:55 You know, you mentioned Garnowski. And I had that cringe, moment listening to you, Kirk post game after the game on Friday night. And he said, oh, he ran it 13, 14. That feels like too much. I'm like, no, Kirk, it's not. No, it's not running more. Yes. I mean, they have a big running back who, a big quarterback who's able to carry the ball kind of like a running back, especially down by the goal line. It's been a long time since we've seen Iowa have a quarterback that was mobile enough to be viewed as kind of a scoring threat. I know I think the concern there is, the more you run with him, the more you expose him to injury.
Starting point is 00:17:34 And I get that. But he looks to be a weapon more than just offensively throwing the football. I agree with you, Trent. It's working out well for him, whether it's designed or whether it's him kind of scrambling and making up things as he goes, run him some more. I thought Tim Lester had one of his best called games sitting in his now, what, year and a half for a little less than that, on the job in Iowa, a tremendous not just play calling, right time,
Starting point is 00:18:04 taking shots, doing the different things that we've all been kind of hoping for, but using the screen game a little bit more, using some misdirection that one that they threw to, was it Bonamay coming back across. I thought that was just beautifully designed. I got Washington out there in space. Just doing those kind of things,
Starting point is 00:18:20 I think was incredibly important. And Tim Lester, he did not have a great game plan. I didn't think against Iowa State. That was a good one. And this kind of goes hand at hand. Got to score points. Tim Lester's got to be at the top of his game as well Saturday after. Everybody's got to be at the top of their game.
Starting point is 00:18:36 But absolutely, if this turns into a shootout, Iowa's going to have to score to keep up with Indiana. I know that sounds pretty cliche, but they're going to need to put some points on the board because I can't imagine this Indiana team is going to come into Kinnick Stadium and suddenly forget how to score. And this is a 230 kickoff. It's not a six o'clock game.
Starting point is 00:18:57 It's not a true night game at Kinnick Stadium. So that advantage that Iowa might have is kind of out the window here. I think Tim Lester has sort of gradually gained the confidence of Kirk Ferren's game by game. I agree with you. I did not think the Iowa State game plan lended itself well to winning that football game. But I came away very impressed with a lot of the things that I saw on Friday in Piscataway and still want to see a little bit more of that slow mesh. I don't know whether we'll see that this week,
Starting point is 00:19:29 maybe against teams like Indiana and Oregon, where they know that they need to break into the bag of tricks a little bit more, but I thought the early returns on that were pretty promising. And we'll see what Tim Lester dials up this weekend, because, again, if Indiana does pressure-wise what they did to Illinois, and they make life uncomfortable for Mark Grinowski, and you start seeing some of those throws get spiked into the ground or two or three feet off the mark.
Starting point is 00:19:56 Again, it could be an ugly day on Saturday. One final thing on this game that I haven't talked about much yet is this. Indiana is going on the road. And I just took a look back a year ago at Indiana on the schedule. They opened up their first road game of the season was out to UCLA. I think that was an eye-opener for a lot of people. They absolutely ran them out of the building. But we know the Rose Bowl is not exactly a very difficult venue for visiting teams.
Starting point is 00:20:23 There are other road games at Northwestern. They went to Michigan State November, got down 10-0 before scoring 47 straight. Still, Michigan State, in a down year, end of the year, not exactly the most difficult environment. And, of course, lost the game against Ohio State. Now, this group obviously has not been on the road together as they brought in more transfers this season. First road game of the year.
Starting point is 00:20:45 We talked about that with Iowa leading into the Iowa State game. And Kinnick is going to be charged up. I think maybe the advantage there has been. understated a little bit. We know what a difficult environment can be, coupled with just Indiana and Cignetti, they haven't seen many environments quite like this. You know, that's a good point. It's one of the things that I tend to look for every year is what's the team going to do
Starting point is 00:21:09 in its first true road game and first Big Ten road game. And we'll see whether or not that factors in here. And I remember that Michigan State game really well last year. And then they found that second. in gear and they pulled they pulled away and again i i think this comes down to how it starts and if they if i will maybe holds them on the first driver to or kate and weech and get something started again like he did last friday and the kinnick crowd this does strike me as a game where the crowd could play a big part especially early on let's get it going charge it up and uh hope for
Starting point is 00:21:48 the best come at saturday afternoon about six o'clock as that thing's wrapping up but we got a lot more before that. We got to make some picks here for this week. Todd, he's got a handful and we'll make our thoughts. No one on this Iowa-Indiana game, a betting perspective, different than what you see. And we'll explain a little bit why that is and why this point spread is very interesting in the betting markets as we continue. Back with you one final time on the lockdown Hawkeyes podcast, Trent Condon, alongside Todd Bromelcamp. to have you aboard with us here today. Best bets of the week.
Starting point is 00:23:27 And Todd want to start first with a thought on this game. So I looked Saturday night and Bandw already had numbers up, including Iowa. And they were getting at that time, I want to say it was six and a half. And then very quickly went to seven and a half even before I went to bed because I stayed up way too late watching Michigan State USC. So I looked again before I went to bed.
Starting point is 00:23:49 And when I did, I saw it was up to seven and a half. And then the next day, I see when Circa releases their spreads for the week. They do it Sunday, and they used to be the opener. Circa is a sharp book. Circa is where professional betters bet. And they had it open to four. Now, they were also in a data with money. And very quickly, they went north of that touchdown money.
Starting point is 00:24:09 But I did think that lent a little bit of insight. The sharpest book out there, even knowing that a couple of the big shops, Fandual Draftings, had the number north of seven and a half, they still kept it. Iowa plus four. You're a gambler. Did you read anything into that? I tend to agree with you. I look at that particular book to see what their lines are and how they shape up with everybody else's. And the fact that they had it well under a touchdown to open, they usually don't make very many mistakes, Jeff Benson and his crew. So that one does have me thinking a little bit here. I look at this just from a Joe public perspective. And I can see a lot of people getting suckered in on Iowa because, you know, if they are even familiar with the mythology of Kinnick Stadium, and I can't believe that Iowa is going to, you're going to give me seven and a half points at Kinnick Stadium, I got to take the Hawks, right?
Starting point is 00:25:05 And that's where I think maybe there's a little bit of a trap here. This would be just a stayaway game for me because Iowa is either going to win this in a close one or Indiana is going to blow them out of the water, I think. So the fact that it's north of seven tells me, I think Indiana might be the play here, but it's not one that I would want to touch with anybody's money. And I don't have any right now because I'm unemployed. Well, maybe make a little bit because you've probably got a couple of bucks in some of those accounts. And you could fire away at that, maybe take a little and build it into a lot. Let's jump into the Big Ten slate this week.
Starting point is 00:25:42 Anything jump off betting-wise for you. Speaking of interesting spots, the Big Noon kickoff, early body clock game. We've seen the West Coast team struggle. We've seen a vice versa. I think this one is incredibly intriguing just because of, you know, that angle again that we talked about a lot. I think with the, I think everybody is probably going to be on USC this week, even with the advantages that Illinois has. Not everybody. Not everybody. You like the line. I'll get back on the Illinois bandwagon. You know, like Signetti said, he broke their will. And I'm hoping that Belema can at least maybe him and Humpty Dumper, these men can get that team put back together again.
Starting point is 00:26:22 But I think I saw six and a half, Illinois at home. You mentioned USC coming east, and it is an early kickoff for them. I think it's a good spot for Illinois to rebound. And it's a heck of a teaser spot, too, six and a half. If you can tease that up, I know a lot of people like to do 10-point teasers, a hard time finding Illinois losing that game by 17 points at home. I'm with you on that one. I think I have Illinois in the back pocket.
Starting point is 00:26:50 Another one I already do is I got the Washington Huskies against Ohio State. And I don't know if there'll be some Buckeye team that starts to come in. Throughout the weekend, there'll be a very public play, I'm sure, this weekend. But I got this thing at nine and a half. I know there's a lot of eight and a halfs currently in the market. As I look right now at Bandool, it's eight and a half there. So I grab the points with the Huskies. Again, Ohio State, them also going on the road right now.
Starting point is 00:27:13 You got a lot of the betting public on the Buckeyes, 73% of the ticket, 74% of the money. I love this spot, and I really like this Washington team. DeMont Williams, big physical running game. I think this Washington team is pretty good. I think we're going to see a tight one out in Seattle. Yeah, again, to me, that's great teaser material. If it's eight and a half, you put six on there and you get north of 14, two touchdown game.
Starting point is 00:27:37 That's still be a convincing win for Ohio State on the road. I don't know about it at eight and a half, but I trust your judgment on that one. And I did have that one kind of starred off to the side because, again, it's, you know, like I like to say, a name brand team going up against a team that maybe has lost a little bit, it's luster over the last couple years. But I still think is a pretty good team, especially when they're at home in Seattle. All right. Bet of the week, my favorite bet, the one that I circled first and I fired out right away. And I know I'm going to be on the public side, which I hate doing, but I just can't see anything. I've been incredibly impressed by Kansas.
Starting point is 00:28:15 The Jayhawks, even in that lost to Missouri, had the big lead and let it slip away. Cincinnati struggled in game number one against Nebraska to throw the football. I think Kansas is the right side here. And laying the number four and a half is out there right now in the market. I'm all aboard this one. I normally am all about the underdogs. I'm played a favorite here. The Jayhawks, my best bet of the week.
Starting point is 00:28:36 What do you have, Dad? I'm going to go with Arizona going into Ames. Jack Trey Stadium. Correct me if I'm wrong. They're both coming off a by week. I know Iowa State is. Arizona is catching six and a half here. And we'll see.
Starting point is 00:28:50 I mean, these are the types of games that Iowa State needs to really make a statement in. And I just think that the way that Matt Campbell sort of is built, very similar to Kirk Farrants, that if they can win that game by four or six points and get out of there with the victory, they're going to be happy for it. So I'll roll the dice here with Arizona and six and a half. half going to A. And I think Iowa State wins that game, but I think it's close. And don't forget, Conrarty is out, right, for Iowa State. So you've got a backup kicker there, which we've seen Iowa State have some special teams problems in the past. So I'll roll with Arizona going on
Starting point is 00:29:28 the road and getting six and a half in Ames. Going with the Wildcats. Final thing for you, Todd, saw that you wrote over and substack a little bit about a friend of yours that just passed away, Dave Sharapan. And myself as a gambler and somebody that does a a lot of gambling content. Certainly knew the name. Boy, looking back at all the tributes that have been out there, very disappointed. I didn't have an opportunity to cross pass with him. Heard nothing but great things and a guy that I know very near and dear to your heart. Yeah, got my BVB hat on. Always Forward, Never Straight was one of Dave's favorite sayings and trying to keep that to heart moving forward here. And he was a great guy and he had
Starting point is 00:30:09 thousands of friends and he was he had the ability to treat every single person that he met like you were one of his best friends and a tremendous loss and uh jess his wife and his three daughters that are left behind but a guy that basically took a gamble on himself and and dropped everything and went to kurosau and helped get an offshore book up and running and that basically got him his his big start in the business and then went out to Vegas and did great things out there and had the opportunity to spend a couple days with him in Vegas a couple years ago, and I'm glad that I did. I really am a tremendous, tremendous insight. And I really wish I could get his insight on this Iowa-Indiana game because he would be able to tell you what Circa opened in that at
Starting point is 00:30:55 four versus everybody else. He'd probably have some thoughts on that. And I wish I could pick his brain right now. No doubt. Well, Todd, a little bit of a somber note, but certainly great memories of a great person and nothing but incredible things in the gambling space with Dave. Thanks for joining us this week. We will hit it up next week. It'll be a bye week edition as I will be coming off the buy. Boy, what a difference a game can make. Buy what goes into the buy with a victory against Indiana compared to taking the second loss of the season. We'll see what it is, but looking forward to doing it next week with you, Todd. All right. Talk with you then. That's Todd Brombram. Joining us here as he does weekly now
Starting point is 00:31:31 on Lockdown Hawkeyes. Thanks for being with us and making Lockdown Hawkeyes, your first listen every day. We'll talk to you again tomorrow until then. Go Hawks.
