Two new commitments for Iowa's
2007 class, but neither
prospect is ranked and only one
held a power four offer.
But if Iowa's recruiting history tells us anything,
the stars don't always tell
the whole story.
You are Locked on Hawkeyes,
your daily podcast on the Iowa
Hawkeyes. Part of the
Locked on podcast network,
your team every day.
Hey, welcome in. I'm Trent Condon,
and this is the Lockdown Hawkeyes
podcast, your daily.
Iowa Hawkeye podcast. Coming up today, we're going to be talking women's basketball.
The schedule is set for the upcoming season in women's hoop from the Big Ten.
We'll find out where Iowa travels to where they will have Carver Hawkeye Arena be the home
base for their matchups and along with the double play coming up this season in Big Ten
Women's, who will also be joined by Tom Kakert from hawkeye report.com.
We'll talk to Tom about a bunch of different topics. We're going to hit a little basketball
with him. Where's the leadership going to come from in this coming,
football season and we'll talk some football recruiting as well with Tom Kaker.
Speaking of football recruiting, that is where our conversation begins here today as Iowa has
landed two more out of the class of 2007 looking forward to this upcoming season.
So as these guys get ready for their senior years of high school, the timeline has increased.
And one thing we saw from Iowa this weekend, which was normally in the past towards the
end of June, they moon the calendar up as well.
had a year, a recruiting year two back where didn't exactly land all the big fish that they wanted.
All right, do we need to recalibrate?
And it's looked like that's what the recruiting staff has done here just a little bit in putting this team together.
So over the weekend, they get two commitments from two guys that just got offers from Iowa.
A day after they get those offers, they have made their commitment.
It started on Saturday with Berias Allen from Dayton, Ohio, a six foot five, 300 pounder,
who had a ridiculously good see.
season. He out of the season go had 20 and a half tackles for loss at the defensive tackle position
in the state of Ohio. Yeah, that definitely gets you excited. And then the other commitment comes
from Jonathan Harris. I'm over in the Chicago land area, 6-2 rangy. And I know if you are somebody
that just follows the way that it looks. All right. Where did they have offers from? Well,
for Jonathan Harris out of Illinois, Missouri State, Sacramento State, Butler, Western Illinois,
doesn't exactly get you excited.
You look at Berrius Allen.
Well, he had Boston College, a bad ACC team,
and then all the Mac schools, basically.
Kent State, Miami of Ohio, Northern Illinois,
though they're now in the Mountain West, Ohio, Toledo,
and on from there.
Do like also, he had an offer from Dartmouth, from Yale.
Yes, that's pretty good.
Definitely gets you excited with Barryis Allen there.
But the reason that I'm not hitting the panic button,
the reason I don't believe you should be hitting the panic button
when you see these two commitments is because,
A, these were two guys that were just on campus.
These were two guys that went through workouts,
and they worked to earn an offer from Iowa.
I love these stories.
And we also know historically in Iowa football.
Look, it's easy.
There are certain guys that you just know.
You know, look at this class.
You watch Jacks Dijin and you know the bloodlines, you know,
yeah, okay, that's easy to get an offer out to that guy.
Gavin Stecker.
If you watched any Betendorf football, you saw a guy sideline to sideline that can make plays all over the place.
Those are the ones that are much easier.
But for guys that don't have an offer to make the decision when weekends are limited, you're looking, where do I have offers from?
Where can I visit?
Where do I get to no campus do all those different things?
Yet you still want to attain that power for offer at EC Iowa.
And when you also look at the position group for both of these guys, that's why I don't think there should be any concern with either of these two players.
Barrius Allen, defense alignment.
And we know Kelvin Bell, just how good he is of identifying talent, putting guys in position
and then building them up year and year out, how good that defensive line is.
Now, as we know, this upcoming season, might be Calvin Bell's most difficult job.
He has had his Iowa's defensive line coach of what he's going through with all the new faces this year,
the incoming guys from the transfer portal.
Lots going to be on Kelvin Bell's play.
But overall, we know what a good job, obviously, he has done.
And then you go over to Jonathan Harris, a safety.
Okay.
Phil Parker gives the stamp of approval.
That's good enough, certainly for me.
The weird thing about this recruiting class,
and I guess I was a little bit surprised by the commitment of both these guys
because they weren't on really the radar.
These were not guys that had big time prospect offers, ratings, anything like that.
In fact, if you go over to On3 rivals right now,
neither of these guys are even graded.
24-7 does have both these guys graded out.
Just seeing that and that commitment because this class is going to be so limited because of the lack of seniors in the upcoming senior class.
Just 10 scholarship guys are there coupled with the transfer portal.
I didn't know how good it was going to be.
And it sounds like overall they did a pretty good job with some of the other higher rated guys that they had on campus coming up this weekend.
Offensive lineman Caleb Johnson, a guy that's a four star.
Lawrence Britt, a four star wide receiver.
We'll talk with Tom Kaker a little bit more with him who visited.
earlier in the week.
Had a few other guys that were there.
A Coon's another name that you definitely should know
in the world of recruiting.
Flemister, there's a bunch of guys
that I think Iowa feels pretty good
about their involvement with.
They haven't made their commitment.
I just don't know how big this class is going to be
and how many spots are going to be available.
Now, for both of these commitments
with both of these players,
I think definitely you can tell
they wanted to get on the bus right away.
They got the offer, boom, make it happen.
And what other thing about Barry's Allen?
Barrius Allen is the prototype of,
it feels like what us Iowa football fans have been asking for,
waiting for hoping for,
or I don't know the past 25, 30 years,
a ready made defensive tackle.
Now that doesn't mean that obviously
getting into the strength and conditioning program
and what Coach Braithwaite does with them,
that there's retooling that needs to happen.
Not a guy you expect to come in and play right away.
That's just not how things work often with Iowa football.
And certainly in the middle of that defensive line.
But we've seen how successful they've been,
for years and years and years of building up their defensive tackles.
Well, this is the one that physically is ready.
6, 5, 300 pounds, great measurables, 20 and a half tackles for a loss last season.
Absolutely.
Love, love, love what they got from Berrius Allen and a guy that physically looks a little
bit different than what we've seen in the past, certainly from Iowa football.
We'll talk more Iowa football and the commitments of the visitors coming up from this past weekend
with Tom Kaker.
We're going to talk some more football with him.
Got some basketball questions as well.
A lot going on in the world of Tom Kaker.
Hawkeyeor Report.com does a great job over there.
Him, Blair Sanderson and the whole crew doing great work.
He'll join us on the other side.
Plus, we'll talk about the women's basketball.
Big Ten schedule announcement.
Got a lot going on.
We got you covered on your daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast, Lockdown Hawkeyeyes.
Stay right there.
We're back with more in a moment.
Patio season is here.
And there's nothing better than having an outdoor space that feels comfortable
functional and gets used, whether it's a backyard, patio, balcony, or deck.
The right setup can completely change how you spend your time at home.
I absolutely love our patio space and a big reason of what we found on Wayfair.
We had some old furniture out there.
It wasn't real comfortable.
The cushions start to get there.
We found a patio set that was absolutely perfect for our space, put perfectly on the
area that we have, sit out there, got the TV, have a cocktail,
absolutely beautiful. Adding just a couple of pieces to your patio, it can complete the whole space.
Absolutely love patio season. Love being here. No doubt about it. And Wayfair helped out my family.
It can help out yours as well. Padio season is here and these deals won't last.
Head to Wayfair.com right now to get your outdoor space ready for way less. That's Wayfair.

Let's talk all things Iowa, Tom Kekard.
Let's start football-wise as we draw closer and closer to that season.
It does seem like it's a long way off at this point.
I was surprised.
Draft Kings came out with their games of the year and put points spreads up for 71 of them.
I'm surprised that Sighawk was the only one listed.
I just got such, it's, A, it's daunting at times.
But I think that this is maybe one of the better schedules from, you know,
fan perspective as I was having some time, Tom.
Yeah, I do too.
And, you know, that you would think one of those in that stretch of Michigan, Ohio State at Washington would have peaked in there.
But, yeah, so far, not out there yet.
Or, you know, you get an Iowa, Minnesota or something like that.
Right, Nebraska at the end of the year.
Yes.
Yeah.
You think that you get one of those in there.
but I guess what did they have the Sighawk?
Is it still 12 and a half?
No, it's 11 and a half at Draft Kings.
Trent,
did you say went up, Trent,
it's still 12 and a half at Fandul,
but if you're going to take the hawks,
you're going to lay the juice of minus 122 on Iowa.
Yeah, so it's getting close to 13.
We'll see where it ends up.
Tom, Trent and I talked about this earlier.
I want you to get your opinion too.
And I think it's just because we're not used to Indiana
of being very good.
We're both back in the same way we were last year.
Yes, we saw them play two years ago,
and they gave Notre Dame a game on that Friday night in the Flurries,
which was just a pristine environment, at least on television, to watch.
And we saw what they did last year, obviously.
Are you convinced that the beat goes on for Indiana this year?
I'm not convinced that it's national title,
and I'm not even convinced they make a playoff.
You know, why should we doubt Signetti any?
more, but I think
some of that is
he's had really veteran teams
the first two years and guys
that have been, a lot of guys that were with him
at JMU and everything.
And now it's kind of a different
makeup.
And I'm just not
so sure they're
as good, are going to be as good as
they have been. And the schedule is
going to be a little more challenging too, I think.
You know, not the first three
obviously, because Indiana
plays.
I mean, because Nettie is not hiding his agenda.
He is going to play tomato cans in those first three games as long as they'll allow him to do that.
But the Big Ten schedule, maybe a little bit more challenging.
Maybe they'll make the playoffs.
Maybe they'll end up ten and two.
We'll see.
Maybe they'll be 11 and one.
Maybe they go 12 and O again.
But I'm not as big of a Josh Hoover fan as some people are.
I think he turns it over too much.
And we'll see.
We'll see what happened.
You mentioned how old Indiana was the last couple of years.
That is not going to be the case for this Iowa team.
And they got guys that have played, but just the lack of leadership up front.
It goes kind of hand in hand.
We got a big recruiting weekend.
I'm going to ask you about that a little bit later on coming up and just about the volume of guys.
But that leadership component, I just keep coming back to it because Kirk loves talking about veterans,
about seniors, about leaders,
and this is a very young team for Iowa standards.
Is there anything that they can do off-season-wise to alleviate it?
Plus, you're going into a season without a starting quarterback,
not knowing who that's going to be.
That's another one of those leadership things, Tom.
It is.
It is probably the most lacking in terms of just, like, known leaders of a parents' team
for quite a while.
I mean, there's only 10 seniors on the team.
and probably about, I don't know, six of the ten are not probably going to play a ton, I have a guess, maybe.
We'll see what happens with some of the guys, but just not a lot of guys that have logged a lot of miles at all.
And that's going to be a challenge for them, just in terms of who are those guys that they're going to lean on.
I can see Zach Lutmer emerging as a leader just talking to him.
He's more talking like a leader, but who's that guy on offense?
I thought it was interesting that they put both quarterbacks on the leadership council.
It's the ultimate hedging of the bat type thing where they put both guys on there.
But I don't know who's that natural leader.
Is it going to be Trevor Loughke?
Maybe.
Deeper is really quiet.
Is he?
Not one of those talkative guys that, you know, I wouldn't say shy, but, you know, is it Alstranga,
that, you know, a tight end.
But there's just a lot of young players that are going to have to mature quickly
because, as we know, the toughest part of this Iowa schedule is in the first six game.
Yeah, no doubt about it.
And when it comes to that leadership, I'm anxious.
to see who Kirk decides to take with them to media days.
I brought that up on the message board.
And what was the consensus?
Was there, you know, were people all over the place?
Yeah, kind of.
You know, I threw out like probably Loughke and Lutmer,
but I could see him taking people or two.
But then who is that third guy?
Is it going to be, you know, with the Sean Lee?
or it's somebody that was on that leadership council for sure.
Is it in Addison Ostringa?
Is it somebody else?
I'm not sure who that's going to be at this point.
Is it at Jaden Montgomery?
Essentially, I think he might be one of those guys that they take along with them
because he's a good talker.
He's a good natural leader.
You know, his dad of Jerry Montgomery is a great leader for him.
football in the past when he played at Iowa.
So I would lean probably towards Jaden Montgomery,
but I think Lumpur is definitely going and either loutre people.
So we do know that that leadership counsel,
both quarterbacks are on it,
and I'm not saying that either one of them is going,
but wouldn't that be something?
Of those two, who's the better sound bite, Hiklinsky or Brown?
Hicklinsky will give you more,
less cliched, I guess, would be the,
right word or just, you know, kind of, Hank's kind of safer. He's going to talk in the, you know,
one day at a time, that sort of stuff. You know, he's going to, he's going to nukela-lush it a little bit,
you know, teach him how to say it the right way and he'll say it. But at Kulinski's can get pretty
honest sometimes. So I would think he'd be more interesting to cover for sure. One and two,
get a look at this weekend coming up for recruiting.
Already have 10 commitments here.
And because of the lack of seniors, there's not a whole lot of scholarships.
A couple of it with the transfer portal.
You feel like, well, you want to hold some spots open for guys in the portal too
and augment that roster going into 27.
So what's the number you think that Iowa football is looking at for this recruiting class
and all the guys that are remaining on their list, how are they going to be pushing this weekend?
And is there a name or two that we should keep our eye on?
I would guess they probably want to get to around 16.
That would be my gut call, that, you know, 15, 16 that they're going to get to
and then kind of just shut it down a little bit because, like, you know, I mentioned
earlier, you only got 10 seniors and you'll have some attrition for sure.
A couple of guys that I would watch, a four-star offensive lineman Kyler Kuhn out of the Kansas
city area. He seems like he's kind of out of central casting for Iowa
often linemen, tough, rugged, six two and a half, six three kid, interior linemen,
wrestling background. He just kind of screams Iowa football. But he's
looking at Missou, going to take a visit there. And Nebraska,
that is if he doesn't commit before then. So he's one of the guys that I've
got my eye on as a potential commit. And, uh, Daryl,
Flemster, who's a cousin of Desmond King.
Oh.
And he's a three-star defensive back out of Michigan.
And he's an interesting guy.
He kind of jumped in there now late to schedule his visit.
He's got Iowa and Illinois the next two weeks.
So I know a lot of people think that perhaps he's a guy that could commit this weekend.
There's a Caleb Johnson visiting this weekend, but not that Caleb Johnson.
Dale Johnson, offensive lineman, a four-star kid from Indiana.
It might be Iowa and Indiana for him.
So I was going to try and prime away from the Hoosiers.
Another four-star that's in Daniel Ubit, who is a defensive back out of Oklahoma,
right now leaning towards Minnesota, but Iowa just added him to their list recently,
so they're trying to get him in.
So definitely it looks like Phil's trying to add.
some defensive backs, particularly corners in this group.
And then, you know, like you said, Trent, they've got 10 commits already,
including Cooper DeGine's brother, Jack's DeGine.
Got the 10 guys that are coming on campus.
And this normally was towards the end of June.
But with the calendar now pushing it up and we go to the beginning of June for that.
Well, earlier this week, Iowa football had a visitor on campus,
a top 100 kid nationally, a wide receiver that is a four-star out of the high school ranks.
what is going on over there?
And does Iowa really have a chance to get a wide receiver like that?
Yeah, Chad Simmons, who covers recruiting for us of rivals and on three,
did a story with Lawrence Britt, 6-180-pound wide receiver from Memphis,
friends with the quarterback commit, Santa Biennes.
And so they're both from the same area.
So Iowa kind of jumped in there.
there's some competition.
I mean, he's looking at Florida and Texas back and schools.
So, you know, Iowa was at least put a good foot forward with the kid,
and we'll see what happens with him.
But definitely at least somebody to continue to monitor as he continues to tour the southeast
is all of his agenda now, I think.
Tom, switching
I'm done with football TC,
switching to basketball.
Yeah.
The women announced that they're going to play Vanderbilt
over in Sioux City.
That's the same day as Creight and I win Des Moines, right?
Yep.
Which is, I guess, unfortunate,
but was there no other date
that they could have made work over there
to try and avoid that?
Or did they even take that into consideration, do you think?
I'm not even,
I'm guessing they took it into consideration,
but it might have been just like,
These are the dates that work.
So this is what we got to work with.
So this is what we're doing.
And they wanted to do it on a weekend.
You can't do it on a Saturday because of college football.
So you're kind of stuck.
If you're going to do it in November, you're going to do it on a Sunday.
And hopefully, you know, they can maybe just do a kind of a double header, but do, you know, one at.
Staggered starts.
And one at 3.30 and go from there.
and have a have a couple of good games.
And I'm sure that both games are going to sell out.
So, you know, that Vanderbilt game will be huge.
That would be a, you know, battle with top 20 teams and, I mean, top 15 teams coming into the year.
And then the Iowa and Creighton will almost certainly sell out with all the buzz about Iowa basketball.
And then the Creighton fans will definitely be showing up too.
Do you anticipate on the men's side?
we're going to get the full non-conference schedule anytime soon,
or is this going to be one that maybe drags later into the summer before we get that?
Yeah, I don't think it's going to be anytime soon.
Based on the way McCollum has worked at Drake,
and then last year at Iowa, he does not care.
And it'll be September before we get it, probably.
But hopefully they announce, I know he wants to try and get a couple of other,
I guess you would call it Marquis games.
or just, you know, some, because I don't think they're doing, they're doing an MTE this year, like over Thanksgiving anywhere.
They're not going to do any of those.
Those things are, frankly, kind of going away at this point because they cost too much money.
And unless you've got a component to it where you can get the players some money, that's, it's kind of a non-starter at this point to go to some of those events.
Is the new basketball floor in place, Tom, or when they can they install that, you know?
Yeah, it's down. Oh, it's down already?
It's good. They got the floor down and they're painting it.
They put out some pictures this morning about them, painting the floor already.
So they're doing the pre-thru lanes and the ends.
So we'll see what.
And they were putting the 22 on the floor as well.
Yeah, you have to.
You got to keep that on there.
And how much is the old floor with it on their worth?
That piece of the floor.
Right.
Right?
How much good, right?
How much good they get for that?
Boy, that would be a good little auction.
Oh, my gosh.
Yeah.
Their Hawkeye fans would love that.
They should just auction off chunks of the floor and use it for NIL.
NIL money.
Absolutely.
My high school did that, not for NIL money, but they auctioned off the floor when they put a new one in.
I got a piece down in the man cave on my hardwood that I played on way back of the 90s, very, very poorly, by the way.
It makes a whole lot of sense.
But Tom, what a swing and a miss.
We had all the connections back to the old era of Iowa basketball,
a chance to paint the floor gold,
go back to the days of Dr. Tom and Lute.
And they went with Black again.
Disappointing.
I wanted to see the gold court back.
Yeah.
And they could put the,
and they'll never do it because the brand is the Tiger Hawk,
but the field house with the flying hawk in the middle of the court
was always just the best.
but I know they're never going to do that because the Tiger Hawk is just the simple of football and basketball.
So it's just, it's never going to happen.
But a guy can dream.
Maybe they'll do a throwback game and put the old flying hawk in the middle.
That would be great.
Yeah, get some retro jerseys go that direction.
Speaking of that, this just triggered into my mind when you brought up the Tiger Hawk.
I remember that it was produced by some, you know, person over, I think, in Cedar Rapids,
Hayden kind of commissioned to get some kind of new logo.
and that's how the Tiger Hawk was born.
I remember hearing, and I don't think it was ever verified,
but did Hayden because of that still get a part of the proceeds from every Tiger Hawk?
Okay.
I had that story right.
Okay.
And the family still does?
I have no idea.
Tom, do you have any idea that if the family still gets anything?
But what a smart idea by Hayden Bryant.
Yeah.
That's Hayden being brilliant.
He just, you know, he got a little cut, a little slice.
That's like those guys.
That's like those guys that own the old, you guys ever see that documentary in the ABA
and the guys from the St. Louis Spirits when they told all the teams to the ABA to the NBA,
they just said, we're going to get a cut of a small slice of the TV revenue in perpetuity.
What?
Yeah, it's a great story.
Find it.
It's an incredible story.
And these two guys from the St. Louis Spirit said, yeah, you guys go ahead.
but we just want like 1% of the TV.
Oh my God.
And the NBA finally bought them out like five years ago and just said, here, this is all you're going to get.
This is that we're going to pay you out an exorbitant amount of money and that's it.
I wonder how much they made over the course of that.
2014.
2014.
They were bought out of the deal.
The settlement happened with the MBA.
So 12 years ago.
And how long was it in place for?
I'll get to that in a moment.
Okay.
But in 2014.
They got $500 million.
Good God.
I've never heard of this story before.
That's wild.
That's the greatest, greatest business deal of all times.
Yes, the answer is yes.
Estimated $300 million in the 38 years previous, an extra $500 on top.
So $800 million.
Just shy of a billion dollars these cats made on that.
Unbelievable.
Make a phone call to the Sinala brothers, I think.
Yep.
Yep.
Yeah.
Amazing story.
It really is.
Yeah, I will now.
I will now.
Tom Kakert, hawkye report.com.
Tom, thanks for leaving me with that.
I've never heard that before.
Appreciate it.
Okay.
Talk to you guys.
Yep.
See it.

So on Monday, we found out the opponents for Iowa women's basketball coming up this season,
where they're going to play them, either home or away.
The double play again this season will be Nebraska.
They'll take on the Huskers twice coming up this year.
The home slate, not really overly daunting outside of two.
Indiana, Maryland, Northwestern, Purdue, Rutgers, Wisconsin,
along with the two LA schools, both UCLA and USC will be making their way into
Carver Hawke Arena coming up this season.
And the Wisconsin one obviously has a little bit of intrigue,
not just with the lady coming back, but of course,
Daddy Deal making her way back to Iowa City.
That's going to be, I think, an interesting environment coming up for that one when the badgers
come to town and probably more intrigue for a Iowa Wisconsin women's basketball than we've
seen in decades.
I think that is fair to say.
The road slate, though, is daunting.
So Iowa this season, the Iowa women will be going to Illinois tournament team, Michigan, tournament team, Michigan State tournament team,
Minnesota tournament team, Ohio State tournament team, along with the road trip up to the Pacific Northwest to take on Washington and Oregon.
Oh, by the way, also a long trip east as they will take on Penn State.
Just statistically, when you look at it, the home teams throughout the course of the season put together a 162 and 127 record,
while the road teams, including eight teams that went to the NCAA tournament,
199 and 100 this season.
That is tough.
Kyle Huesman with those numbers from Hawkeye Report to just show you how difficult the road slate is going to be.
Now, the actual time of the year that these games are going to be played,
when are they going to make the long trip out to the Northwest,
those kind of things.
That's not going to be later ready for us until later, but shows you,
Jan Jensen, a lot of new faces, Danny Carnegie coming in,
obviously the headliner amongst them.
Going to be a slate in the Big Ten, it's always difficult.
It feels like with the home road.
splits, maybe even a little bit more difficult
this season for them.
Out of time for today, we will be back
with you tomorrow. Want to get
