Starting point is 00:00:01 Iowa down 14 to 2. Dead in the water, not this team, not in this building. The Hawkeyes flipped the script on Ohio State and storm all the way back and just might have punched their ticket to the big dance. Strap in, we're breaking down Iowa's statement win. You are Locked on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day. Hey, welcome in. I'm Trent Condon, and this is the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast.
Starting point is 00:00:38 Thanks for making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day. We are your daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast. I've been covering the Hawkeyes for over 20 years on the radio here in the state of Iowa, including currently on the Iowa Sports Radio Network, where you can hear me each weekday from noon to two and stations in Sioux City, Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, the Quad Cities, along with our flagship, 106.3 KX&O. Today's episode of Lockdown Hawkeyes is brought to you by Fandual.
Starting point is 00:01:06 Use your profit boost on an NBA future and get entered for your chance to win a trip to the NBA finals. Play your game with Fandual, the official sports betting partner of the NBA. A lot of basketball conversation here today as we get ready on the women's side. They'll be playing on Thursday evening against Illinois. We'll break down that game and what a win can mean for them. Talking about building an NCAA tournament resume. boy, the Hawkeye women look to be in great shape of not only hosting in the first couple of rounds at Carver Hawkeye Arena, potentially earning themselves a number two seed in the NCAA tournament, a two seed in the Big Ten tournament.
Starting point is 00:01:46 Good things happening there. We'll talk about that a little bit later on. But we are going to begin the conversation here today talking about this Iowa basketball team. A little bit later on, we will get into the resume what this win against Ohio State means for this Iowa team and what they still can accomplish for the rest of this season and going into the Big Ten tournament. And with it, yes, going into the NCAA tournament. Down early in the game, it's 14 to 2. And social media is ugly.
Starting point is 00:02:16 The message boards are hideous. My text group chain was not looking good. A lot of frustration in the air at Carver Hawkeye Arena, a lot of frustration, certainly, from the fan base that was watching from afar. But in the end, Iowa comes roaring back in this one. And they did it a bunch of different ways. You start with, of course, the coming out party for Elverill Fulgaris. And Fulgaris has been inconsistent throughout the course of this year,
Starting point is 00:02:41 has not been the number two weapon. I think that a lot of people believed he was going to be coming into the year. The player of the year ago in the horizon is Robert Morris team a season ago, where he was beforehand had pushed Alabama in the first round of the NCAA tournament as a 15 seed against the second seed of Crimson Tide. year ago, but we see when it's right. And it was definitely right tonight. And this was as a whole with this basketball team. I think two major components to this one. And you start on the offensive end of the floor and their ability to get into the paint. Looking at the numbers of this
Starting point is 00:03:19 one, 44 points in the paint for Iowa. Fool Garris was a huge, huge part of that. You also had the ability of Bennett starts off the bounce. And when things were not going well, that's what we saw these guys turning the corner and getting to the rim. Now it definitely helped that the big man for Ohio State was out in this game. And you saw they were basically a donut team in there. No big guy really that was going to be able to do much of anything inside. And Iowa definitely took advantage of that. You could see the game plan.
Starting point is 00:03:49 The Buckeyes came out hot. They hit a couple of tough shots. I hit a couple of open shots too as they opened up the lead. But what I liked right away, even down, it was 15 to 5. There was no panic out of this group. There was no chucking shots. There was no lack of dazeical play. They still were locked in.
Starting point is 00:04:07 They still had the belief that they were going to come back. They were going to be fine. In fact, I looked at the live betting odds at Fanduil when it was 15 to 5. Open up the app. What do I see? Iowa was still favored even at that point. Now, I didn't get it when it was 14 to 2, but still at 15 to 5, you're already down 10. You think, well, Ohio State's got to be favored at this point.
Starting point is 00:04:26 That wasn't the case. It shows you just what this Iowa team certainly can do. and when they're getting it from this many facets. We also have to talk about, yes, the point scoring was huge on the offensive end of the floor, a night where you just hit five three-pointers, five of 18, and we'll talk about some of those misses a little bit later on, but we have to bring up Kale Komes. Kale Combs has been much maligned here recently.
Starting point is 00:04:49 He has not played good basketball over the last month. And as we talked about dating back to a week ago in the victory against Nebraska, a huge part of that was on the defensive end of the floor and what Bennett Sturts did in that game against Price-Sampard. How about what Kale Combs did in this one against Bruce Thornton? Bruce Thornton that has killed the Hawkeyes the last couple of years. He went for 32 the last time out against Michigan State. You think about scoring 32 individually against the Spartan defense
Starting point is 00:05:18 with Tom his own company. That is not an easy accomplishment. The game plan for Iowa was very simple. Get the ball out of his hands. And they, on the hedges out on the screens, they doubled him a whole lot more than we've seen really throughout the course of this season. Hadn't done that nearly as much as they did in the game this evening. And that was impactful as Thornton. It took him a long time to get anything going at all.
Starting point is 00:05:43 I don't think he had a field goal for the first 27 minutes in the game. Something ridiculous like that. He finishes three of eight from the floor, O of two from behind the arc, four free throws in the game, 10 points and only two assists for Bruce Thornton. Mowgli was hot early on. He had knocked down a couple of three-pointers. Biden was the same in that early run for the Buckeyes. But then after that, it was all Iowa. And these are the kind of games that definitely has your confidence grow
Starting point is 00:06:10 when you're able to play at that level. 7457, the final. I'll also have to mention a couple of other games, guys that I thought were tremendous, Fulgaris, Kale Combs. You know what you're going to get out of Bennett Sturts? And in a way, it's probably unfair to Sturts, just because we expect this every single time from this dude that he's going to do it. Three assists, no turnovers.
Starting point is 00:06:33 He finishes the game with 22 points, three, three-pointers in the game in a day where he only hit five three-pointers. He goes three of six from behind the arc. But again, it was his ability turning the corner, getting into the rim. I love that part of his game so much. And I want to see even more of it. We've talked about it plenty here. Our everyday listeners, you definitely know that.
Starting point is 00:06:52 It's something that I want to see even more from him turning that. corner. How about also just their ability to push it a little bit, a little bit more? Now, they only finished the game with eight fast break points, but there were those different moments. And definitely in the second half when Fool Garris had the dunk and came back then with the runout and had the Euro step layup, we saw a couple of those runs that he was able to get. Still felt like when it was there, Iowa was willing to push the pace a little bit more. Definitely love to see something like that. Iowa finishes with 1.3, 4 points per possession. That is at an elite level. A couple other guys, Cam Manwa, again, really, really good. You look at this guy, seven rebounds, 12 points in the game,
Starting point is 00:07:38 playing around the rim, understanding his role with this squad, really liked what they saw out of him. The negative, I guess you point to the bench outside of Fool Garris. In fact, just two points in the game. Those came on the Triven Urock free throws. And Urock's a guy that I brought up here a week ago, just wondering, you know, if there was going to be a moment to get him four minutes and a half. And that's basically what they did, played a little bit later on as well.
Starting point is 00:08:03 But you definitely can see the skill set from Urock, a guy that is still learning, obviously what it takes at this level, still work to do in the side-to-side movement and the physicality of the league that he's going to play with. But he's a big body. He is a very skilled offensive player, can shoot it from the outside.
Starting point is 00:08:19 he's not shy. He's going to be a good player for Iowa. He's going to help them, certainly going forward. But just getting him a little bit of run in this game, I think that was good to see out of Trevon, Urock getting him going. But nothing out of Isaiah Howard, one of the least amount of minutes that he's played this season, just eight minutes in the game. Tate Sage came in, 0, a 3, including missing a couple of three pointers. He didn't have a whole lot going on. They relied on six guys basically in this game to get the victory. And I guess that would be the negative point with. with the continued struggles from Cooper Cotch.
Starting point is 00:08:52 And the three-pointer that he hit from the right wing, beauty. Outside of that, he missed every other shot. What of six? Now, mixed it up. How about five rebounds after the goose egg the last time out against Wisconsin? Good to see that. He placed 32 minutes. We know Cooper Cotch is going to be solid on the defensive end.
Starting point is 00:09:09 A lot of times going up against bigger guys, not the case here. But good to see Cooper Cotch being able to help out in other ways in this game. We talk about his defense also. So just got to get that shooting stroke going. And I don't know if it's a confidence thing right now. I don't know if there's something maybe mechanical that is happening with him, regardless of what it is, need to get that guy locked in. And even if he's not hitting 40% of his three-pointers,
Starting point is 00:09:32 which I think he can be that good of a three-point shooter, the shot just looks too good for him not to be a good shooter. And that was his calling card coming into college. This was a guy that could really fill it up. I remember a scotter report about him back in high school talking about for guys, you know, a power forward type, a stretch forward type. They thought that he was the best shooter in that class out of the big guys coming in. We know he can do it.
Starting point is 00:09:57 Now get the confidence, get the mechanics, whatever it is, get that fixed because they need Cooper Couch to knock down shots. They need him to be better than he's been from behind the three point arc. Still, great victory for Iowa. Feel good about that one. We got some new, some more notes on that. When we come back, what this win means for the NCAA tournament, the rest of the and things are happening around college basketball.
Starting point is 00:10:22 That's putting Iowa in better shape of maybe staying off that 8-9 game and moving up the seating list. We'll talk about that. The Hawkeyes resume as we continue, this is Locked-on Hawkeyes. Have you ever wanted to experience the NBA finals live and in-person? Starting point is 00:13:09 Thanks for being with us. As always, in making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first list every day on your daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast. So one thing this win did for Iowa helped solidify their place in the Big Ten tournament, the likelihood is, especially if they get the win against Penn State. they're going to be the number eight seed, the double by in the Big Ten tournament. And now we know what it would happen if they win the match up against the nine seed or whoever comes out of the pigtail match before that. But still, yeah, it's Michigan.
Starting point is 00:13:39 That'll be waiting for them in the quarter final round. Still, that's what puts them there. And in order to make a run, look, you're not going to be able to do it. It's starting the tournament off playing on Tuesday. We know that. So that is a big help certainly for it. But most importantly, it's about the NCAA tournament. And for us Hawkeye fans have been waiting since 1999 just to get to the second weekend, all the frustrations, the disappointing losses, the upsets in the NCAA tournament.
Starting point is 00:14:05 And what's happened to this program over the last quarter century plus as we're waiting for that next step, well, we know how important it is to first get off that eight, nine game. And that's where most of the brackets out there currently have Iowa projected an eight nine seed in the NCAA tournament. There's some different layers to that. but just to show you a little bit about this. And just to get to a sweet 16, I think for Hawkeye fans, that is our hope. Well, in order to do that, get to a sweet 16, by percentage, your most likely path,
Starting point is 00:14:35 if you are in these middle seeds, if you will. If you are an 8 seed, you have a 10% chance of making the sweet 16, a 9 seed of 5% chance. Combined 15% chance of getting to the second weekend if you're in the 8-9 game. Not great. However, you move up to a 7% chance, seed. Well, that alone increases your chances up to 18%. In fact, being a 10 seed gives you a better
Starting point is 00:15:01 chance of making a sweet 16. That has happened 15% of its time on its own. The reason, you're not playing a number one seed in the round of 32, and that is a huge, huge help. In fact, even better than an 8, 9, or 10 seed is being an 11 seed. Nearly 17% of the time, the number 11 seed gets to, to excuse me, the sweet 16. So you have that. component. But we're talking about going the other way. Obviously, a seven seed would be great to see if Iowa can get up to that level. But the best case scenario is for Iowa to work their way up to a six. And I know after the loss to Maryland, after what happened against Wisconsin, a lot of people have been jumping ship. But this is not in a vacuum. This basketball season, when we talk about
Starting point is 00:15:45 the tournament, it's not just about what the Hawkeyes do. And as we talked about yesterday, why Iowa was in such good shape is because of what's happening around them. And a lot of the other teams in this range are losing basketball games. So Iowa gets the win against Ohio State. That's going to help. We've been talking about the metrics and kind of what it means. But you look at some of the other teams that help. And Bart Torvik, one of the analytical sites that I talk about often,
Starting point is 00:16:10 and has a rooting guide for each and every day. You go back to Tuesday night. A lot of good things happen for Iowa. Indiana getting beat by Northwestern, keeping Iowa above them. in the seating order. Oklahoma beating Auburn, another bubble team, and that worked out well. NC State getting blown out by Virginia.
Starting point is 00:16:28 That was a good result for Iowa. BYU getting throttled at home by Central Florida. Another good result for Iowa. And there's a bunch of these games that have been falling that way. New Mexico, another bubble team. They got beat by that creep Steve Alford. Washington got the win against Rutgers. That just helps because that is a road victory for Iowa.
Starting point is 00:16:49 Missouri beating Tennessee. these are the things that help. And then even tonight, of course, the Iowa victory, but some of the other ones that are out there, Yukon, blowing out St. John's, that was a big help. Grand Canyon, who Iowa beat earlier this year on the neutral floor, they got a victory. Texas is getting beat by Florida, another bubble team that moves down in the pecking order.
Starting point is 00:17:08 Georgia, another team on the bubble, on the good side of the bubble at this point. Texas A&M, all these teams are losing. And with it, well, if you lose, you're going to go down, right? You're going to go down the seating order. You're going to go down the pecking order. and teams move up, even if you're not doing anything. Things have been going well. It's not going to happen all the time.
Starting point is 00:17:26 It's not all going to break your way throughout the course of the season, but that has helped out a ton coupled with now, metrically, where Iowa is. So this is a quad two victory for the Hawkeyes. This one, along with the UCLA game that they got earlier this year at home, both on the fringe, but still a quad two victory. And I don't see either way, either Ohio State or UCLA moves up to a quad one victory. still probably going to be in that quad two territory.
Starting point is 00:17:53 Still Iowa 7 and 0 against quad two, three and seven record against quad one, the wins that they have, road win against Washington, road win against Indiana, and the victory that they have at home against Nebraska. That is what's currently on the Hawkeyes resume, and the likelihood is that all of those games are going to stay quad one victories. They're not going to lose any. You know, they showed Ohio State's resume. They finally got a quad one victory after last night.
Starting point is 00:18:20 When Northwestern upset Indiana, they moved into the top 75, and that gave the Buckeyes after they hadn't had one for so long. These will fluctuate as well. These things will change. The one anchor on the resume, though, for Iowa is that loss against Maryland. Still, we will find an updated number tomorrow. The wins above bubble, wab. That has not been updated yet. They were 31 coming into tonight, maybe a little bit of a change on that one.
Starting point is 00:18:48 but Bart Torbock has Iowa up to 22nd. Ken Pomeroy has Iowa up to 23rd. So they continue to rise in the analytical. The predictive markets really like this Iowa basketball team and what they've done throughout the course of this season. Still a lot in front of them. And you don't want to give it back against Penn State. And that's going to be tough because it's not that you're walking into a hornet's desk, right?
Starting point is 00:19:11 This is going to be ugly, ugly basketball environment. Penn State in general usually doesn't have a whole lot of fans there. It's going to be a noon tip off out on the East Coast, 11 o'clock for us central time. It's going to be a sleepy environment. You're going to have to do it yourself. Penn State is not a very good basketball team. After getting this win and the way that it played out, you've got to be ready to go. And we want to see this team not get down 14 to 2.
Starting point is 00:19:39 Please, to Penn State. Please don't let that happen. Let's get off to a hot start. Let's play like they did in the first 10 minutes against Wisconsin. and do that, certainly on the offensive end, that would be a great thing to see. And just impose your will. Take them out of it right away and have that sleepy environment, be an embarrassment to them. And they go through the motions, much like we saw Ohio State, for long stretches of this game,
Starting point is 00:20:02 certainly during the second half, do that against this Penn State team. Take them out of it. Iowa with 20 wins. Now, Ben McCullum becomes just the second coach in Iowa basketball history to win 20 games in his first year, joining Dr. Tom Davis, who 1-30. Don't think Coach McCollum's going to get there, but no, no, that's not going to happen. Still, Iowa puts themselves in really good shape. We talked about the importance of this week, and great to see that it pays off,
Starting point is 00:20:30 and they get a lot of those different things. A couple other notes from James Allen, the sports information director on the basketball side of things for Iowa hoops. Talked about Bennett Sturtz is 22 points, but they don't turnovers. and 20 plus points for the 10th time in his last 11 games, 17th time this season that that has happened. The turnovers, though, a big one as well as he does not have a turnover in this game. First time, also Ohio State has lost back-to-back games all season long. We talked about the yo-yo that had been happening with the Buckeyes
Starting point is 00:21:02 throughout the course of this one. A couple other notes from this one mentioned Bennett Sturts in the turnovers. 10th game this season that he played without a turnover. and this Ohio State team, they've been scoring this year. And you saw they have some dudes offensively. Certainly, they held them to a season low, 57 points, 23.4 points below its season. Average, Iowa has held all but two opponents this year under their season scoring average. Doing it on the defensive end, love to see that.
Starting point is 00:21:32 We talked about some of the regression we've seen defensively. And outside of the first five minutes, that was not the case in this one. Well, it's not all about the men's side. The women, they got a big one themselves. It'll be the finale for the regular season at Carver Hawkeye Arena. It's Illinois up next in maybe a little bit of payback. That's next. Lockdown Hawkeyes.
Starting point is 00:21:55 I'm Kleea Butler, host of Lockdown Women's Basketball. And this is Mazda's Women's Basketball Snapshot, celebrating the work no highlight reel can ever capture. South Carolina rolled past Ole Miss 85 to 48 to clinch a share of the SEC regular season title and locked down the number one seed in the conference tournament. The Ginkcocks extended their win streak over Ole Miss to 21 straight. UCLA dominated Wisconsin 80 to 60 to secure its first outright Big 10 regular season championship in program history.
Starting point is 00:22:27 The Bruins improved to 27 and 1 overall and remain unbeaten in conference play. And number 12 TCU stormed back from a 13.4th quarter deficit to beat Iowa State 80 to 73. The horn frogs now sit alone atop the big 12 standings and are one win away from clinching another regular season conference crown. These moments are earned off the clock, those long before the lights ever come on. The sweat, the fakes, the doubt, the scrapes, and coming back for more every time. Mazda puts that same drive into every detail. Winds defined the moment, putting in the work, that defines you. There's more to a Mazda because there's more to you.

Starting point is 00:25:02 com. The Iowa women wrap up at Carver for the regular season because you, Yes, they will be hosting in the first and second round of the NCAA tournament. And here comes Illinois. The Illinois, a year ago, knocked off Iowa early in the conference season and an Illinois team that certainly, let's get a feel a little bit different. With Guyton now over there, and though she has not been playing probably the role that she anticipated, I think, making her way over there. She had some D&Ps earlier this season.
Starting point is 00:25:36 still, this has been an up and down season for her. A lot of people thought that she was going to be the heir parent. She was going to take over the point guard spot. That didn't happen. Iowa went out and got chit-chat right, and it's worked incredibly well, obviously, for them. The Iowa women in control now of getting the number two seed in the Big Ten tournament with their victory on Sunday against Michigan.
Starting point is 00:25:59 And when we talk about resumes, this resume is absolutely sterling. seven quad one victories that combined 13 and 5 record against quad 1 and quad 2. There's quality in there as well. Nice victories. The Michigan 1 road victories against Maryland and Nebraska. What they've done also, Michigan State, Ohio State, Oregon, all quad one victories. Really good on that resume. The neutral court victory that they have against Baylor stacks up incredibly well when you're
Starting point is 00:26:29 looking through their resume in comparison to some of the other number two and number three seeds that are out there. Now, the match up against the line, what's going to give Iowa some problems in this game Thursday? Well, the first thing that jumps out is they can shoot it. This is an Illinois team that shoots the ball well, really from all over the floor. 20th in the country in three-point shooting by percentage, 36% makes on that front. 71st in the country in two-point makes, and they lead the country in free throw percentage shooting 81.6 from the free throw line this year. They're very very,
Starting point is 00:27:03 very young. They are a team that plays a ton of freshmen and sophomores. This is going to be a team. You're definitely going to have to contend with a whole bunch going forward and what Shauna Green's building over there in Illinois. They've won three in a row, regained some confidence after they had lost four out of five. Still, they had some tussles. And they went out to Oregon, lost by three. They hung around better than most teams have against UCLA. Lost that one by 13. Lost by six at Nebraska. This is a team that has been there just hasn't been. been able to get over the hump against many of the better teams in the Big Ten. They've taken care of business, beat the teams, certainly that they're supposed to. Got to win earlier this year against Maryland, definitely their best victory of the season.
Starting point is 00:27:46 This will, though, this would be that huge quality victory. Obviously, coming to Iowa City and getting a win. It is projected Iowa 10.5. Favorite in the matchup against Illinois, but a very talented offensive team. That goes back, though, to this Iowa defense. And what we've seen out of them going back to Sunday, You don't want to let down after getting a top 10 win. You don't want that to happen.
Starting point is 00:28:08 Michigan, Ohio State played a great game themselves on a Wednesday evening, one that came down to the wire, went to overtime, and the Buckeyes had a look to beat Michigan, but couldn't get over the hump in that one. 6-3 freshman, parchment, big load inside. Barry Wallace, maybe their best player on the floor and can do a little bit of everything. But mentioned parchment. 6-3, she can step out, 293, pole.
Starting point is 00:28:32 winners this season. Maddie Weber shooting 42% from behind the arc. So a lot of shooters got to cover them up. Let's hope that Hawkeye defense certainly plays as well as we saw Sunday against Michigan. If they do, they're going to be in good shape to get the victory here. That'll do it for today. We will be back with you after it goes final with Iowa and Illinois with a rapid reaction podcast as we just did here on the men's side of things. Iowa gets the win against the buck guys.
