Iowa has their first significant blow in the transfer portal as safety.
Coing Entringer is leaving Iowa.
The latest on that front.
What's happening in the portal and a big blow to the Hawkeye football team.
You are Locked on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day.
Hey, welcome in.
Condon and this is the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast. Thanks for making Lockdown
Hawkeyes your first listen every day. We are your daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast. Thanks
for being with us here today on the lockdown network. Now number one for sports
podcast. I've been covering the Hawkeyes for over 20 years on the radio in the state of
Iowa. You can find me currently on the Iowa Sports Radio Network each weekday from noon
to two with stations in Des Moines, Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, the Quad Cities, and Sioux
City. Today we're going to talk a little basketball. That
will come later on. The women survive a scare in Evanston against Northwestern and a poorly played
game by the Iowa women. They find a way to get the victory. We'll talk about that. Some impacts to
this one and Emily Rodriguez on the travel squad. She made her way, though, did not play
battling that back injury. We'll also take a quick look at the Iowa men's matchup tonight and a
huge matchup against Minnesota, not because the gophers are good by any means, but most importantly,
what's in front of Iowa. This four game stretch, certainly the most winnable, might be
be this one against Minnesota. We'll get into that. But a lot of football today is we'll be joined
a little bit later on by Elliott Cluff from Hawkeye Insider.com. We'll get Elliott's perspective on
everything happening inside the transfer portal and talk some hoops today. But we begin with
the big news of the day. And that is certainly the transfer portal. And more importantly,
I will losing a guy that comes as a surprise. Starting safety, Cohen entering her has entered
the transfer portal. A lot of people already connecting dots.
starter this year. Over his 70 tackles really did a lot of good things for this team.
We talked about his versatility, an ability to play the cash position, move back, safety
positions. He is probably most remembered early in his career in the Big Ten championship
game against Michigan. Missed a tackle on a punt return, came all the way back 90 yards
down the field and tackle the punt returner from Michigan in that one. Finally, it's turned
into a full-time player and a very good one this season go back and a couple of the games that
definitely stand out and really it was the fourth down stops that he made defensively and showing
that physicality that he plays with I think that definitely rang true and Tringer was a guy
that definitely could come in a couple of fourth down stops against Indiana had a couple of big
pops that go back to the Vanderbill game just in the bowl game but there were some signs
I think that we can look at and read into here with the
decision by him to enter into the portal.
First, though he had a year of eligibility, he did walk during senior day.
I think that was number one.
Now, a lot of people equated that.
Well, we'll see baby's going to put his name into the NFL draft, a very least get
a draft evaluation, and see where he's going to be on that front.
And that could be a possibility.
The other part, though, that you look at is going back to the bowl game.
And when he was asked about returning this season, 2006 season for Iowa,
he said, I'll have an announcement with that after the bowl game.
Now, he was committal somewhat, but non-committal.
It was weird.
The terming was a little bit off, but regardless.
I know this did come as a surprise to some people in the Iowa football offices,
thought that he was ready to go, going to come back for another year.
But another reason that this is befuddling, and we know the reason, money, we'll get to that.
But that aside, is because.
This isn't just any other player.
This isn't Brian Allen who's going to be fighting guys like Yosea F.
N and Kenneth Meriwether and all those young guns at defensive end for playing time.
They went out and got a defensive end from Elon.
That's not that.
This is not Kale Kalerick, who had been a special teamer.
This is not even Jazzy on Patterson, who he saw plenty of,
but knew he was not going to be the starter running back for Iowa.
This is a guy that was a starter.
This is a guy that had nothing to worry.
about in terms of playing time for next season.
On top of it, he was also a captain.
And Kirk Ferrence, one of his many great attributes, is his ability to read people.
He knows people.
And he knows when there's a guy that is filling him with crap, right?
There's a guy that isn't exactly forthright and the kind of person that he is.
I think Kirk is very good at that.
of finding those bad eggs.
And Code Antringer is not a bad egg.
That's not to paint him in that lake because that wouldn't be fair.
Because after having an opportunity to interview him, talk with him,
definitely do not get that at all.
Now, I can have the wool over my eyes a little bit easier.
I'm sure the Kirk Farrants, but that aside.
But he was a captain.
And with Iowa football and leadership,
and how many times do we hear Kirk Farrants talk about leadership?
And at times it becomes nauseating.
Just, okay, enough.
but it is incredibly important
for the way that Iowa's built
the way that they play
the very fabric
of the Iowa football program
leadership is a huge component
to that
and to be named captain
at Iowa
to be one of the three representatives
that get to represent Iowa
at Big Ten Football Media Day
as Coen Entringer did
a guy that at the time
had started one game
basically completely unheard of
That's why this comes as a surprise.
Now, the why?
Well, the why is very easy, money.
The why is very simple.
And as you look at a couple of past safeties at Iowa that are still hanging around,
Gino Stone clung on to a spot in Baltimore, then finally got a contract in Cincinnati.
He made some money.
But that's not always the case.
We know the NFL short life is incredibly small.
And you look at a spot like this.
You look at safety.
Look, he's not going to be getting $5 million.
like Brendan Sorsby as a Texas Tech at quarterback.
He's not going to be talking about those kind of numbers.
But there is real money out there.
I was not going to pay lavishly for the guys that are staying.
They're going to pay them well.
They're going to give them a good rate.
But it's not going to be what it is in the open market.
And in the open market, a guy like Cohen-entrenner is going to get paid.
And you look at his home state.
Michigan State just got a huge influx of money.
money from one of their donors. Michigan, obviously, money is not a concern for that program.
And I would anticipate those are the two most likely destinations for Cohen-enteringer
that those are going to be the places that he ends up as one of those two spots.
But it is the going rate of being in the portal. And I'm surprised at, in fact, even more guys
like Cohen-en-en-Tener are not in there. This comes as a surprise because it's Iowa.
And we're growing accustomed to certain things
And the way things go
But this is how the other half lives
And there are starters all over the country
That are doing the exact same thing
Not just a quarterback
I think we should be happy
That hopefully this is it
That it's also not Trevor Lauk
Who could go back to Indiana
And both from the Hoosiers or Notre Dame
Make a crack ton of money
We've got to hope that there's other guys out there
That are not doing the same thing
That are starters
In order to pay
Play you got to pay
and there are other programs out there that are paying at a higher level than Iowa.
I was okay, but it's not elite in terms of the finances that are out there
and the way that other programs can overpay.
It is our reality.
There's our reality and that will not change until somebody strokes out a couple of huge checks.
That's the only way this is going to change.
There is some good news, though, from the Transfer Portal here since we talked last.
A couple of commitments for Iowa.
Imagine that along the defensive line.
one of the two targeted areas along with wide receiver.
The first Bryce, Bryce Stevenson from Holy Cross,
really good FCS program.
It's had a lot of success there.
Didn't have a ton of offers, which was interesting.
Dad played at Florida State has just one year of eligibility,
but plug and play guy, come in there, fill in the gap.
He really does look like Jonah Pace's replacement, right?
Guy that's going to go in there, really like the way that he moved.
I thought he was more athletic than I anticipated for Stevenson,
a guy of his size, but you're going to have one year to come in, definitely needed that help
and the defensive line as Bryce Stevenson makes his commitment to Iowa.
The other one, a little bit more exciting because he gets to the quarterback, and that is
Camari Brown from Elon.
Brown comes in after a season ago, finishing with 66 tackles, 16 tackles for loss,
and 12 sacks along with three, four spumbles.
That one is an exciting one.
After the loss of Brian Allen to the NCAA Transfer Portal, definitely excited about
this one, somebody that can get to the quarterback and maybe a different type of defensive
end. We're going to talk a little bit more about Brown. And then finally, the wide receiver
position, though no commitment yet, two names definitely to keep an eye on. Tony Diaz just
finished up his visit at Iowa. He's at Kentucky now visiting. He's also been to one other spot
as he is going to make his way back home out of Texas Rio Grande Valley. We talked about him
a little bit here these last couple of days. Definitely one to keep an eye on. And another one we're
going to talk about next with Elliot Clough from 24-7. Sports Hawkeye Insider is Cade Wolford.
A potential replacement for Cain Weechin. This one, got to be at the top of the wish list,
certainly for Iowa. We'll get it to that when we come back. Elliot Clough will join us from 24-7.
The latest portal targets for Iowa football plus little Iowa basketball is they prepare for
Minnesota. That's next. Locked on Hawkeyes.
Let's be real. Managing your finances can feel overwhelming between subscriptions you forgot about,
bills that keep going up, and trying to figure out where all your money actually goes each month,
it's easy to feel like you're losing control.
And who has time to track every transition or hunt down hidden fees?
That's where Rocket Money comes in, the personal finance app that helps you take control.
It finds and cancels your unwanted subscriptions, monitors your spending, and helps lower your bills so you can grow your savings.
I was absolutely floored when Rocket Money showed me
I was actually paying for a subscription on a website
for athletics that I hadn't looked at in years.
It's already saved me money.
I completely forgot about it.
And that's what Rocket Money can do for you.
I love the ability to see what is in, what is out,
and also what you're able to save each and every month,
put that savings and put it to work for you.
That's what me and my family do with Rocket Money.
money help you reach your financial goals faster join at rocketmoney.com slash locked on that's rocket
money.com slash locked on rocket money.com slash locked on let's talk to elliick club shall we
hawkye insider dot com 24-7 sports elli trented again how are you sir i'm hanging in there guys
made it through the uh all the holidays completely healthy and then just got lambasted so i'm feeling a little
sick. I missed the first quarter yesterday, so hopefully they aren't too upset at me today,
but yeah, hanging in there. Yeah, good stuff. Well, and you guys are very busy time of year
for those of you in this industry trying to keep up with all the comings and goings. Any
surprises as far as Hawkeye players entering the portal than any of them catch you off guard
that boy didn't see this coming type of thing. Yeah, you know, I think the main one is the one
that we reported early
I guess it would have been
last week but Brian Allen
entering the portal
that was a bit of a surprise
just because he's going to be
I should have said that it was late last week
but he was going to be in line
to be a starter right
like you're losing both Maxwell
and Ethan Hercott
he's a guy that is just kind of physically
a freak I mean we've
seen bits and pieces of that mostly
last season so not so much as
this season we just saw, I think he only had half a stack this year, half a TFL, big on that
breakup that resulted in an interception for Bryce Hoffo in at Wisconsin.
But other than that, I can't really, you know, I mean, he made a few plays in the bowl game,
but other than that, I can't really think of any major plays he made this year.
So maybe, you know, he's looking for a place where he can step in and kind of be allowed
to be that physical freak and just get after the quarterback.
Because in Iowa, that's not really how they do it with their two-gap system in the run game.
and then their main focus is causing disruption in the past game
as opposed to just racking up back.
So, yeah, a bit of a surprise in that he would have been a starter
or likely would have been a starter at the very least.
But at the same time, given his physical tools,
he might see that he thinks he's better off elsewhere.
Well, his replacement, it appears, a defensive end.
Kamari Brown comes in from Elon, two years of eligibility.
He is a guy that can get to the quarterback.
Iowa 70th in the country this year in Sacks, something that is kind of step back the last couple of years.
Brown at the FCS level definitely was able to get to the quarterback.
How does he fit?
He kind of looks like a different type of prototype of defense event than what they've had recently.
Yeah, I think he is kind of similar to that Allen mold, but probably a little bit thicker,
a little bit more violent in his ability to get after the quarterback.
And of course, you know, it's apples and oranges when you're looking at the FCS versus the power.
for and how they can fit.
But for a guy like Kamari,
I think that, well, you hope that's
a plug and plug and play, right?
You look at Epinessa and think that
he can be a starter day one
next year. I think Brown is your guy
there. And to play him opposite
of Kenneth Merriweather will be a positive.
And again, assuming Kenneth
with Maryweather starts. So we'll see
how everything ends up in terms of what they do
with the rest of the portal
window and the defensive line.
but Brown, I mean, man, like, you watch that tape and you can see the violence.
You can see the intensity with what she plays, and it gets you fired up a little bit.
So, you know, if there is going to be a go-to-pass rusher next season, if it's not, Yosea Fanez,
I think Camari Brown is the guy that you're going to be looking to.
Do you know offhand who the football staff has identified as maybe a primary or a priority,
a target, maybe not necessarily a player, but a position?
And do you know what they're, you know, really focusing on whether they solve that problem or that problem still remains?
Is there something or someone out there that they're really working hard to solve that issue?
Right now, I think what they're really looking at is fill in the void that they lost that receiver in terms of speed because Caden Weegean was so important at that spot.
Jacob Gill also kind of the safety valve of the offense in terms of the passing game.
So we know Tony Diaz is fresh off a visit, the receiver from, wait for it, U-T-R-G-V, put up a ton of stats for them this last year.
And he's, like I said, he's fresh off a visit.
Cade Wolford from Kent State will arrive today and have his visit tomorrow for his agent.
Told me that yesterday.
And he's a guy that average, I want to make sure I get this number right because it's pretty nuts.
26.8 yard for catch last year.
He had 19 receptions for 509 yards and seven touchdowns.
So a guy that can definitely run away from a defense.
He's already got offers from Baylor, UCF, Wake Forest,
and I think another powerful program in addition to Iowa.
So he's going to be a guy that Iowa is going to push for.
But Diaz, too, both playmakers in the open field.
I think what they're really looking for is a replacement sort of for that gadget guy like a Weegean.
You don't necessarily need them to be an all-American punt returner kick.
returner. I mean, comparing them to
Wichin in that facet, it would just be
unfair because Wichin is, in my opinion,
the greatest ball time in terms of return
in the football for Iowa. But if you can
get a guy who can be that
player that opposing defenses have to
account for when he motion
catches the ball out of the backfield, maybe
even on a deep shot,
that'd be huge to
get a player like that. And then
additionally, I think they're just really looking for
more playmaking talent on the outside. They just
haven't had. That can be
more consistent hands can be a deep ball guy can take the top off of the defense that's that's
really a focus right now and you know losing five seniors on the defensive line plus ryan allen
they've still got some holes to fill that they really like having a deep rotation at defensive
a defensive line spot and of course um still looking to fill out the room with specialists you lose
your kicker one of the greatest kickers in iowa history and drew stephen you lose three staking to
to Michigan State.
I mean, you don't have a punter on their roster right now.
They don't have a punner coming in in this recruiting class.
So they've got to go out and get somebody there.
And I mean, if you're a punter, where would you rather be than Iowa City?
Especially in Aussie.
Right, exactly.
So we'll see how that transpires.
But you'd have to think they're going to try to get a long snapper as well,
just for the sake of depth because they lose Bryant Whorl too.
And who knows what, you know, other positions are going to be losses.
This portal window is two weeks long.
So some guys still working on making decisions, and there's still 10 days left.
So a lot of things can happen.
Look at a link from Hawkeyes Wire, and they did credit you for the story on Wallford, the Kent State,
perhaps soon to be a Hawkeye, the receiver you just spoke of.
And apparently he did return kicks there.
So I'm not sure, you know, if that means that he's automatically going to be asked to do that,
but at least he does have some experience in that area.
Yeah, yeah.
You know, I think we may have talked about this before,
but I talked to Caden Weegean had a practice this year.
I didn't have a camera or anything,
but it was just kind of shooting the breeze.
And he said that he could see Brevindal and wait for it.
Braden Jackson returning kicks here.
Walk on running back,
the son of former NFL running back, Fred Jackson.
Braden is, he said he's one of the fastest guys on the team.
And having seen Braden play in high school, I was shocked.
You know, one of the South Dakota, one of the Dakota schools didn't offer him.
You and I didn't offer him.
He's only offer a walk on in Iowa.
And he's still one of those kids that you watch and you say, oh, that's different.
So that was a steal to get for the Hawkins.
Elliot Clef is joining us, Miller & Condon, on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
Before we move on to basketball, we haven't asked you.
Just your thoughts, how would you, I guess, summarize the 2025 football season?
season, whether you want to give it a grade or something that's stuck out with you.
When you look back on 2025, how will you remember it, Elliot?
I think it's one of those seasons of what if.
Yeah.
Because all four losses, right, all four losses by single digits, I mean, one score
games, five is the most points that Iowa lost by this year.
So close against Iowa State, of course, that balance that ends up in Burkle's hands.
on that pass from Rocco Beck.
Mark Grinowski scores, and then Dante Moore's throws one of the best balls I've ever seen on a go route to set up the field goal.
I'm trying to think of what other games they had.
The screen against Indiana?
Yeah, exactly.
Yeah, who knows.
Maybe Jeremy Heklinsky completes that path.
Yeah.
I mean, if Mark Grinowski doesn't, you know, have that awkward fall.
So just a lot of things that just didn't quite go Iowa's way.
Of course, they cap it out with a win.
They move on from the ranked losses streak of 13 in a row.
And, you know, you hope that you can take that momentum through this transfer portal window into the spring
and solidify Jeremy Hecklinsky or Hank Brown, for that matter, as your starter,
go into the next year and ride that high and hopefully keep it going.
But, yeah, it's too bad because this really was a good football team that probably deserved more than they got at the end of the day.
Some things just didn't bounce their way.
And that's just, I mean, I'll quote Kirk Farrant, that's football.
And it's unfortunate, but it's kind of reminiscent of that 2018 team
where things just didn't go right and end up not quite where you want to be.
But this was a really, really good team that just came up short.
One final thing for me in the portal.
And you look through kind of the list of guys.
You look at the follows from Tyler Barnes.
And I know you guys have a link up on Hawkeye Insider on that on the front of your message.
board talking about the different guys that he's following so many fcs guys is that just the
reality that's where i was going to be or maybe as we get a little deeper into the process that
they're going to see what they can spend maybe have a little bit more money how do you see just
kind of the the game plan the blueprint that they have right now of what they're doing in the
portal i would say there's a couple things to this the first thing that came to mind
or that does tend to come to mind when people bring that up is i was been really
nearly burned by some of these P4 editions, the power four editions that they've made.
I mean, you look at Cape McNamara, you look at Caleb Brown, like that just essentially
was throwing money into the proverbial blender and hitting the high button.
Like, I mean, that was see you later money.
Nothing came from it.
So, I mean, and even like you look at Eric All, which is just an unfortunate circumstance,
because he was really good when he was with Iowa, but just couldn't stay healthy towards
ACL against Wisconsin.
So I wouldn't put that in the same category, but Cade McNamara and Caleb Brown were absolute and other flops.
So you look at the risk versus reward ratio, and when you have to pay an FCS player significantly less than you have to play a guy like Caleb, or excuse me, a guy like a Caleb Brown or a Cade McNamara, then the risk versus a reward is significantly in favor.
The other point that I'll make is you guys know those grids that people put on social media of like you get $15.
to send at the year.
My move when I get those is who is the most valuable at the cheapest price.
I always go low and then once I have like, oh, man, I could get, I don't know, this
XYZ player at an incredible value and then fill out the rest of my team, save money
until the end and fill out and the rest of my team with like one or two, five, $5
guys and I feel like I got the best team available.
That's a possibility, too.
Obviously, those top dollar guys, like I was not going after the DJ lag ways, the Brennan's
Boresby, those guys, right?
That's just not where they're at.
They don't feel like they need to do that.
So go and get your FCS guys that you feel like you can, you have so much to sell that they
can fit in well, one, and two, that they fit your cold as they are guys that still feel
like they have something to prove.
And then, you know, if you have money left over, one, you can make sure you keep guys in Iowa City like a Trevor Lough, like, I mean, even like a Cohen enteringer who you wouldn't think would leave, but you can say, hey, you stuck it out, here's a little bit more, something like that, right?
And then additionally, you might have some money left over that you can go and get other guys that might have been looked over in the portal to add more to your roster, whether it's depth, whether it's looking to the future.
or something like that.
But I think it's the right way to move if you're Iowa
because you don't have unlimited resources.
You're not one of the blue bloods in college football.
So it's a way to be as effective with your money as possible.
And that's the way to do it.
Last thing for me, switching to basketball, Minnesota tonight,
then home to Illinois before on the road at Purdue and at Indiana.
How important is this one, Elliot?
This is an important one.
This is your first true road game.
against the Big Ten opponent.
You can move to three and one and continue to solidify yourself in some of the metrics.
And so Minnesota is not as, you know, they look awful early on in the season,
almost lost the UW Green Bay at home.
But they've turned some things around.
They're still a Big Ten team.
They're well coached.
So Iowa can go and get a win on the road.
That'd be a great start or a great, you know, win early on in Big Ten play,
especially when you've got this gauntlet coming.
up with some of the top teams in the Big Ten?
Short of it being a road game and Tyson could definitely fill it up from the outside.
Anything else about this Minnesota team that does concern you?
Honestly, I mean, honestly, not really.
I think Iowa should win this game and I think they will win this game.
This last victory over UCLA to me was really telling them who this team is.
They're going to win games that they should win, and they're also going to be resilient.
You know, I hate to refer to or go back to last season's team or Fran McCaffrey's team.
The teams, Iowa would not be whatever they are, 12 and 2 in a top 25 team right now if Fran McCaffrey was still coaching this team.
Ben McCollum has really revitalized what these guys are doing on the court, the players that he's brought to Iowa City.
And I mean, that crowd in Carver Hawkeye Arena the other night or the other day,
day was the bet that I've seen in my three years on the beat, not even close.
There he is, Elliot Club joining us from hawkeye insider.com.
A big thank you, as always, to Elliot for all of his time, breaking things down.
A lot of football and a lot of portal news, the big one today as we hit that up before the news
of going entering or entering the transfer portal.
We come back more basketball, including a recap, what we saw Iowa women get the win against
Northwestern.
What are the men need to do to get the win against Minnesota?
I'll break it down next.

Rapping things up basketball.
It was a poorly played game last night from the Iowa women.
They did not play well against Northwestern.
They get the win.
67.58. That was a Northwestern team that had lost eight consecutive games. Iowa was a 26 and a half
point favorite at Fandual. Obviously did not cover that number in this one, but you dig a little bit
deeper. You had Chit Chat Wright, who was playing injured or ill, I should say. Felt sick. Some reports
on that, not feeling real well, just two of six from the floor, 12 points. But a couple of
clutch free throws late. Um, Ava Hyden was great early.
Filed trouble.
Got to stay out of it, very simply.
Taylor Strumbleau was not good.
Taylor McCabe hit a big three in that fourth quarter.
That was really important and definitely needed that.
But I think the story of the game was Addy deal.
And though she just hit two buckets, both of them were really important ones.
And you're seeing her continue to grow.
She's not going to be hit the ground running, average in 15 a game.
That's not addie deal.
But you're seeing her become much more comfortable with this squad.
becoming more comfortable in her role
and the way that she needs to play for this team.
Nice pull-up jumper,
but the most important one was
as things were getting a little bit tighter there
in the fourth quarter,
made a beautiful spin move,
and those are the kind of plays
and that kind of speed and athleticism
and ability, put it on the deck,
get through traffic,
and then finish with that kind of spin move
while she was a five-star.
Maybe hasn't come along as quickly as we wanted,
but she's going to be really important.
And as we await what's going to happen,
and the injury of Kylie Fairbock and Emily Rodriguez
and what it's going to look like for both of them,
certainly going forward for this team
and what they're going to be able to provide going forward.
Good to see Emily Rodriguez on the bench there
and making the travel team as well,
make the way to Northwestern as she is dealing with
that has been turned from Jan Jensen,
a chronic back issue.
And then finally, the Iowa men tonight against Minnesota.
And as they have Illinois coming to town over the weekend,
then a road trip out to Indiana to face both
the Hoosiers and the Boilomakers, incredibly arduous two-game stretch that they have
coming up on the road after that.
It's not a must-win.
There's not must-wins on January 6th.
However, it's an important one.
An incredibly important game tonight for Iowa.
Get a road victory, get a first true road victory of the season.
Didn't go well against Michigan State, went better against Iowa State, but ultimately couldn't
get it done in that one.
Go up there.
They're a better team.
They're favored by six and a half.
currently at Fanduil, get the win.
It's going to be a slow, grinded out kind of game.
Once you see them shoot the ball better than they did,
certainly in the second half.
And if they can knock down a couple of three-pointers,
more than a couple, eight, nine, ten, three-pointers,
I think they're going to be really in good shape
because outside of Kate Tyson, this Minnesota team
doesn't have a whole lot of scoring punch.
We will be back with you tonight to recap the Iowa Minnesota game,
plus the latest on the transfer portal,
as I'm sure, at the time we talk next,
There'll be even news that are in there.
