Starting point is 00:00:00 stunned silence in Iowa City. Double overtime, a 10 seed, and the Hawkeyes are out. Again at home in the second round. How this happened and what's going to happen next for Iowa Women's Basketball. You are Locked on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. I'm Trent Condon. Today's episode of Lockdown Hawkeyes is brought to you by Fiandull.
Starting point is 00:00:35 During the tournament, Fandual is offering $300 back in bonus bets every day for 10 days. Head to fanduel.com to get started. Today, we're going to take a look at the Sweet 16 matchup for the men as they get ready to face off against Nebraska. We're also going to be joined by Elliott Clough as he makes his way back to Iowa and the departs for Houston for that Sweet 16 matchup as we are going to relive once again. The huge win against the defending national champions, the victory against Florida, plenty of that. But we begin today's show with a look at what happened earlier today in Iowa City. And the second round of the NCAA tournament as the Iowa women fall in double overtime to 10th-seated Virginia in just an absolutely mind-boggling game. Final score 83-75 as the Hawkeyes go down.
Starting point is 00:01:23 Their season concludes at 27 and 7 on the year. This game had a little bit of everything from stoppages, ref shows, if you're into that sort of thing, to players making big shots. Unfortunately, from the Iowa perspective, the players making the big shots were wearing orange. And that was the case here as Kamara Johnson got cooking finally in the overtime sessions. She doubled up her point total from the regulation,
Starting point is 00:01:49 had 14 through regulation, 14 more in the two overtimes as she finished with 28. Paris Clark hitting big three-pointers for a team. Not a great three-point shooter throughout the course of the year. Certainly didn't look like that was the case at Carver Hawkins. Arena and we saw something that I believed probably should have laid more credence to throughout the course of the year. We look at this Iowa women's basketball team and throughout the season and all the highs that they've had, there weren't many of these moments. There weren't many
Starting point is 00:02:18 moments of close games that really came down to the wire, came down to the final couple of minutes and in a way that showed up for a young squad. It showed up for a team that just had not been in these environments. The big wins that they had this year, We go back in the wins against good teams, Washington, Michigan State. So many of them throughout the course of the season, they weren't close. Ohio State, when they ran them out of the gym. Nebraska, what they did to them over in Lincoln. Even the game that they beat them in Carver was close until the final five minutes of the game before Iowa eventually pulled away.
Starting point is 00:02:53 There were just so few instances throughout the course of this season that Iowa played a game like this, a game that was close down to the wire. We know the blowout losses to UCLA and to Yukon that they sustained throughout the course of the year. The only home loss before today that they had at the hands of Minnesota who's on to the Sweet 16. We saw those things, but that is something that you just have to be able to get comfortable in uncomfortable situations. And the Iowa women today were uncomfortable and just never could figure it out. Once again, much like it was in the game in the opening round victory against Fairley Dickinson, it was the shooting from the outside and knowing that this was a Virginia team that is big.
Starting point is 00:03:34 This is a Virginia team that was very good in terms of block shots, in terms of rebounding throughout the course of the season. You figured that this matchup-wise could pose a little bit of problem inside for Ava Hayden. I think you saw some frustration, certainly from Hayden. I think the block shot ability of this Virginia team definitely showed up a couple of different times. Yes, Ava Hayden went off for 26 points, 11 to 22 from the floor, but 11 to 12. 22, we're so used to her shooting 60, 65, 70% from the floor, 50% shooting. It just leaves you scratch your head a little bit. And I think those shot blockers, what is a part of it?
Starting point is 00:04:11 This is also a team, though it does have two very experienced players. I played a lot of basketball in Hannah Stolke and Kylie Feerbach. And credit to Kylie Feerbach in a game where you talk about that defensive intensity that she showed. And certainly for the first 40 minutes against Kamara Johnson, who was just in outstanding player for the Hoos. She is tremendous. There's a reason she was a McDonald's All-American and made the choice to stay home and rebuild that program, a program that hadn't been to a Sweet 16 since the year 2000, 26 years.
Starting point is 00:04:43 Nobody on that team obviously was alive the last time that they made a Sweet 16. And she's a big part of the reason that they're there, a team that had to play an extra game. They were in the playing round, become the first ever team in the women's bracket to get to a Sweet 16 after having to play in the first four. These are all things that happen in this game as we continue to relive. Just a performance that is incredibly frustrating. Five of 29 from behind the three point arc.
Starting point is 00:05:11 Five of 29. 31 of 84 from the floor. They shoot 36.9% from the floor overall. 17.2% from the three point stripe and 8 of 16 from the free throw line. A couple of times he had opportunities put this game away, had looks from plenty of the players. You have the free throw shooter that you want there in Chitat, right? She misses two free throws that were incredibly important.
Starting point is 00:05:38 You have a great look from the outside from a good three-point shooter throughout the season. Taylor Strembleau, and it rattles out. Strembleau goes 1 to 10 from behind the arc. Two of 13 from the floor. Kylie Fearbock, a lot of great looks. Goes one to seven. Three and nine from Chit-Chic. right. She was approaching 50% from the three-point line this season. She goes three and nine.
Starting point is 00:06:01 And it wasn't just the shots that they didn't make. It's the shots that they didn't take. As we go through and we look at this team and you look through both back at the season and he looked forward, there's plenty to be excited about. When you have a core of sophomores with Ava Hayden, with Taylor Stremlow, with Chichat Wright, and all the young talent that we saw off the bench this year in Journey Houston, an addie deal. You got players, Layla Hayes, you got people to be excited about the future. This was the bridge year. And it didn't end the way that I think anybody wanted or expected this squad. If you get to the Sweet 16, it just has a completely different feel than this kind of loss. And much as what happened when they lost in the second round, going back to the sophomore year of Caitlin Clark when they fell to Creighton that season, that provided a lot of fuel for Caitlin Clark.
Starting point is 00:06:54 and she talked about that and leading into it, though they still struggled the next couple of years in that round of 32 game, as I would did here. Again, they were able to get over the hump and obviously get to back-to-back national championship games. And that's not to say that that should be the expectation. And as we look around and you see what the elite level teams are doing in a year-in, year-out basis,
Starting point is 00:07:14 Iowa still got a lot of work to do. We'll talk plenty about the off-season, what's in front of this team, what needs to improve, what they need to do offensively, because with the squad that didn't shoot it really well after the loss of Taylor McCabe and running the triangle offense that they did, there needs to be more actions. There needs to be more things that you're going to do. And regardless, what you have coming in, you have to go to the portal and you have to identify
Starting point is 00:07:40 that they need more shooting on this team. They need to be more consistent there and just offensively what they're trying to do if they're going to continue with the triangle and the high, low offense. There's got to be different ways that get into it because, again, it was just way too stagnant in this game, way too stagnant overall. Iowa turned it over 16 times, which is a lot, but we've seen Iowa turn it over plenty of times. But it was the points off turnovers that absolutely killed Iowa in this game.
Starting point is 00:08:06 I mean, 27 points from Virginia off those 16 turnovers, just absolutely mind-boggling. We have major fouls in this game. Boy, it was a weird one. It was a wild one. And Iowa falls in the round of 32. It is going to be an incredibly interesting offseason to see what this looks like. We know that Iowa is in good shape in women's basketball as it pertains to NIL. There's opportunities for them to spend in the portal to go out there where upgrades needed.
Starting point is 00:08:34 What else needs to be done to augment this roster? Shooting is one. People that can beat people off the bounce is another. Because when you have a star inside at Ava Hayden, you've got to find the right pieces to fit. and not only find the right pieces, but also find the right scheme to fit exactly with her skill set and what you're going to be able to do. That is going to be the offseason plan for Jan Jensen, and we will continue to tackle that here on Locked on Hawkeyes. We are here daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast, Lockdown Hawkeyes. We continue from the frustrations of the second round from the Iowa women.
Starting point is 00:09:09 Let's go back and relive what we saw from the Iowa men. Elliot Kloff from Hawkeye Insider.com making his way back from Florida. We'll get his perspective of what he saw. on the scene in Tampa, and we get ready for the matchup against Nebraska in the Sweet 16. That's as we continue, locked on Hawkeyes. Starting point is 00:12:25 Are you going right to Houston? I am headed back to Cedar Rapids. I get there tonight at midnight and then fly out tomorrow at 1.30. That's awesome. Unpack, repack, off to the airport, check in and away you go again. What a game. What a game? What was it like?
Starting point is 00:12:41 I mean, let's give me an idea of how many Hawkeye fans were in attendance. Tough travel. obviously know that the one seed's going to be waiting. It's tough to get to Florida in spring break, even tougher to get home at the end of spring break. But what was the turnout like for the black and gold lovers in the stands, Elliot? Yeah, it was about one section of Iowa fans, and the rest of them were gators. It was full on and away game for Iowa playing just two hours away from Tampa,
Starting point is 00:13:11 or excuse me, from Gainesville in Florida. And, I mean, man, you guys saw the first half. to scuffle, everything like that. That entire arena was against Iowa, Ben McCullough, and all borrowful gear. That's awesome. It was insanity. One of the best environments that I've ever been in in college basketball.
Starting point is 00:13:30 I don't know if you guys saw the video I got of Todd Golden, but John Fock and I were, we were right there. And then we were behind Ben for the Clemson game, too. So we got front row seats to all of it. It was insanity. It was a reality. road game against the defending national champion, the best front line for my money in college basketball, and I will went in there right away. I know Sean is very much your guys,
Starting point is 00:13:57 this kind of analytical guy over there at Hawkeye Insider and really diving into the numbers. What they did, the game plan that they came up with was absolutely incredible, moving Chittaloo away from the rim, moving Condon away from the rim. That was a master class right there. And, you know, we've heard about it for so long, just as a... guy. He is an ex-as-knows guru, the actual basketball game planning. It is top-notch. That was, I think, Exabbit number way. If Hawkeye fans were wondering, Elliot, this was the one to show them. This guy knows how to coach. Yeah. I said it this morning. We just recorded a swarm cast at the Tampa Public Library, which is actually where I'm calling you from.
Starting point is 00:14:40 Nice. Be going to be quiet. But, yeah, if you needed any further affirmation, that Ben McCollum was the guy for Iowa, you got it yesterday. I mean, it felt that way for a good chunk of the season. It felt that way, especially when Iowa beat Indiana at Indiana and beaten Darren DeVries and on the road. But, I mean, you talk about X's and O's. You can talk about that all you want. I mean, it really does come down to the jimmies of the Joe's because what Iowa had to do was be a complete effort team. I mean, like we all know Bennett hasn't been playing.
Starting point is 00:15:17 well as a plate. But who steps up all the world full gear? Who steps up? Kielkone. Who steps up? Tavion Banks had one of his best names, if not the best game of his career when you needed him most. And they really embodied Tavion Banks last night, in my opinion. With the physicality, embracing it,
Starting point is 00:15:33 really just not getting intimidated by Florida in the slightest. Even when things got scutifully, even when the arena is 95% Gator's fans, they did not step down from the rating champs. And I mean, when you look at what Bayesian did, I mean, what he's been doing all season, too,
Starting point is 00:15:53 is sticking his nose in there and doing everything he can to push back on those bigs, even though he's only six, seven. And look at that come to fruition. All come together last night in Tampa. And, I mean, it wasn't just the physical part either. Like, Florida was talking the whole game. I think you got to see it in one. particular circumstance when Cooper Koch was talking to Thomas,
Starting point is 00:16:20 how could the free throw line? And I'm assuming Thomas was talking some stuff to Cooper. And Cooper turns to him and smiles and says, come on now. And I mean, like that's just like what that game was last night. I would not back down. They were not going to just let Florida walk all over them. Even when it was a 4.5 point lead towards the end and everybody's thinking
Starting point is 00:16:42 Florida's going to pull away, nope, nope, not a chance. I mean, it was what Ben McCollum did with a bunch of mid-major guys. They're going to the Sweet 16. I mean, it's just, first time in 27 years, and I'm sure your listeners have heard that all day to day, 1999 in the last time. It was just, I mean, how can you not walk away from a moment like that and not just be flabbergasted at what Ben McCollum has done with this program in less than, I mean, he's been here for about a year now. I mean, it's just, I mean, how lucky are Iowa fans? Yeah, this is a tip of the iceberg. I truly believe that and hope that's right.
Starting point is 00:17:20 I do want to ask you this because I was at home like most of our audience was. And we're listening and we're watching the game. And at the end of the first half, McCollum's going crazy at the officials. I thought you're bitching for like half a second. Like that's going to make a difference. And that's what the commentator thought it was too. And they thought it was to see. And then when you come to see it later,
Starting point is 00:17:41 the Chinilu just absolutely destroyed your rock from behind, that had to be what was McCullum was upset about, correct? Yeah, he was absolutely upset. And for good reason. I mean, you guys saw it in brief. It looked like two or football. Yes. Knock up on here.
Starting point is 00:17:59 I try to take him out. Yeah, that was a mistake by his baseball. And I honestly think they made up for it and started the second half on a foul ball on Chinleau. I think it was at the basket. I think it was maybe on trying to get for the pocket. And it was just a really questionable valve all in the opinion. And I think McCollum made his coin.
Starting point is 00:18:19 And they were like, yes, you're right. We thought on replay. And they gave it back to them. That's how officials got to do it sometimes. You miss it's all you got to make up for it. I think McCollum made his case in Lowe and thought. And they say, you know, they think they did what they have to do. You know, if you're a four of me and you hate that.
Starting point is 00:18:37 But, well, maybe Chinolin shouldn't have tried to run over Trevonorev in your office who's freshman from behind. So I think that that's half an officiating, honestly. Like, they weren't perfect by any means, but you got to do what's right. And sometimes that's make uncalled. And, you know, the other thing, talking about Chinaleau, 0 for one from the field, zero points, four fouls. If you, I mean, like, that is gold, in 19 minutes,
Starting point is 00:19:06 that's a gold standard for playing against one of the best athletes in the country, one of the best big men in the country. Like, that's just phenomenal. I want to jump ahead because we will still relive this Florida game, and this will be one that we'll talk about for a long time. Forever. This is going to be there, and it's going to be a memory for a lot of people for a very long time.
Starting point is 00:19:26 Up next is Nebraska, obviously split during the regular season. The scouting is going to be much different for this one, and now how do you come up with a third different game plan against this squad, with the turnaround, with the Huskers, and obviously the weapons that they have, that weird defensive strategy that they have. Your thoughts on the matchup is you get, ready now to depart to Houston next.
Starting point is 00:19:47 Man, if Florida was a crazy environment, have to think or Tampa, you have to think this one's going to be crazy too. I mean, to have two heated competitors or rivals face off here in the Sweet 16, I mean, what
Starting point is 00:20:03 more can you ask for? Nebraska, who has just won their first NCAA tournament came ever in Iowa, back to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1999. I mean, man, I think the first thing that you got to think of is a Bennett third because he has been struggling as of late. He really has. I don't think he's had what anybody would consider a really good game since they beat Ohio State at home by 17 points just a few weeks ago.
Starting point is 00:20:31 So you're hoping for that if you're an Iowa fan and you're hoping that this team collective effort can continue because, man, it is getting you far against really talented teams. So a couple of those things are huge. And I mean, maybe Bennett just serves as a lockup defender like he did the first time. They played Nebraska against Price Stanford taking him basically the whole game. So, yeah, I mean, there's going to be a lot to this coming game. There's going to be a lot of emotion, a lot of intensity, a lot of fans from both sides. And I can't wait. Like, this is, and there's been a few moments where Sean and I have been sitting in Tampa and we're like,
Starting point is 00:21:11 this is why we do this job, man. Like this is, and it's even bigger now, taken on arrival on the Sweet 16. So, yep, you're hoping to take that momentum. You're hoping to take that effort on the class. And so maybe take it beyond the Sweet 16th. Last thing for me, Elliot, as you've seen this, you're a younger guy.
Starting point is 00:21:31 You haven't seen this kind of success for men's basketball and getting just to the second weekend. You've been around the program now. You've been in Iowa City. you saw the environment start to ramp up, including that Nebraska game, which was about as good as you're going to find what it was like against Michigan.
Starting point is 00:21:47 Wrestling, maybe looking at a downturn. Women's basketball, they're still selling out, but you wouldn't render about sustainability. Is there a real opportunity here for Iowa basketball, for the men's basketball program to reignite this fan base and get back to what it was for me growing up, for a lot of our listeners that are out there, for the older generation,
Starting point is 00:22:05 is there a chance that Iowa basketball can get back and be a consistent winner and maybe more importantly, have the finances and the NIL budget to go out there and spend and compete year in a year out. Well, I'll speak to the first point, and I'll say hell yes. Like, they're going to fill up Carver next year. I mean, maybe not on a super consistent basis. Maybe not sell out the whole season like the women have. But they're going to have some sellout games and they're going to be able to get up against some of these top opponents.
Starting point is 00:22:33 And, you know, I think the biggest thing is that Ben McCollum is going to get his high major guys there too. Harris coming in, Trey Thompson, should be available and should be ready to play next year. Plus, you're going to get a couple more transfers. And these guys want to play for Ben McCollum. That's why Brendan Hawson ended up at Iowa. Sure, he hasn't fanned out the way you've wanted it to. But that's why that guy ended up at Iowa. And Ben's reputation is only going to continue to take this program further and further.
Starting point is 00:23:02 I mean, how do you watch that? How do you see that effort from those guys and not? If you're not one of those Tavion banks, dude, I mean, if you are one of one of those guys, how do you not look at that and say, oh, my God, I want to play for Ben McCollum. And I really would be surprised if this team doesn't continue to take the momentum and capitalize on it. I mean, Ben said as much last night. He said he really thought that the fan base was back and should be back after this. And I agree, man.
Starting point is 00:23:32 Like, everybody's been saying, oh, it's going to be disappointed at the end of the year. oh, you know, all these things for the last however many years of Fran and Blake Lider and Alford and so many different situations, players, whatever. Well, now you can't say that anymore. You know that these teams are going to come in and compete. And Ben McCollum was the right choice far and beyond. And he's just getting started. One thing that people have said is this might be just worse team personnel-wise when he's at Iowa.
Starting point is 00:24:04 And that might be true. I mean, they're going to the Sweet 16, so anything is possible with Ben McCollum. At least that's the way it feels right now. Starting point is 00:27:22 Hawkeye podcast here on the Lockdown Network, now number one for sports podcast. So here it is Iowa, Nebraska, the rubber match, just like we all had, right? Going into the tournament, all had in the preseason. My daughter had it in her bracket. She had Huskers Hawkeyes here, played in the Sweet 16. Ellen knocked it out of the park. Did you? I didn't. Though, I did have a bet on the Hawkeyes to make the Sweet 16. Better price than he could have got in the rollover bet.
Starting point is 00:27:48 So I jumped aboard on that one. All right. So we look at these matchups. And, you know, Iowa came roaring back in that game in Lincoln. The last time that we saw these two teams collide in that game, Ben Sterts was not elite by any means. The struggles have been real for him recently. I would turn it over in that game 19 times.
Starting point is 00:28:04 And I think that's a place that we have to start. Turnovers have to be cut down. You can't afford against this swarming weird defense that Nebraska employees. You can't turn it over on that rate. Now, easier said than done. But after the pressure that they were able to withhold against Florida, I think absolutely they can do that. We know what Price Sanford can do from the outside,
Starting point is 00:28:25 but really was the other guys and off the bench. Kale Jacobson knocking down a couple of three-pointers, going perfect from the floor six of six. He can't afford guys like that going off. Having little Sammy Hoyberg going out there and poking the ball and finishing, you know, with four or five steals, have to stay away from that. He had five steals in the game, 11 overall for this team. Cut the turnovers down.
Starting point is 00:28:47 I think there's going to be a big opportunity. We saw great shooting in that game from Cooper Cotch. That needs to continue as well. And good Al, good Alvaro Fulgaris. We know how important that component is. We're going to take a deeper look into the profile, some of the stats, some of the numbers. And what exactly makes this Nebraska defense just so difficult for teams to go up against? because it's not like they have a bunch of athletes, right?
Starting point is 00:29:11 It's not that they're a bunch of guys that can de you up. It is a different kind of system. We're going to dive into some of the reasons behind that. There's a lot of intrigue, a lot going into it. And I heard this one the other day and really got a kick out of this. Wouldn't it be just something if Iowa wins on a last second three-pointer like they've done with the last second field goal so many times recently against Nebraska to punch their ticket to the elite eight for the first time since 1987?
Starting point is 00:29:36 If you're watching on YouTube, you see it basically every show, the guys over my shoulder, what made me a sport fan, Ed Horton, Roy Marble, BJ Armstrong, that group, and what they meant to me as a sport fan growing up, that was the last time. We saw the Hawkeyes in the Elite 8. Broke one streak of 1999. That one is over, cue up the Prince. Now, let's make it another. Let's beat the Huskers.
