Starting point is 00:00:00 it was all there for a hawkeye upset big plays big defense and a kick to win iwa couldn't get it done where does iowa go from here after a 2015 loss to indiana you are locked on hawkeyes your daily podcast on the iowa hawkies part of the locked on podcast network your team every day Hey, welcome in. I'm Trent Condon, and this is the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast. Thanks for being with us and making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day. A very frustrating evening here after Iowa falls at home, 2015 to 11th ranked Indiana, and a game that felt like for a very long time, it was setting up to be another Kirk Barron special, and Iowa was going to ugly it up and come away with the victory. Alas, not the case in this one. A lot of different directions. connections to go. You can tell very frustrated with this one as it just had all the makings of something that was going to happen. By the way, if you're new to Lockdown Hawkeyes, I am here with you every single day.
Starting point is 00:01:13 It is your daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast. And with that, we will talk to you about a lot of things going on. By week coming up this week, we got basketball, some recruiting news. Obviously, we're going to be getting into. So hit subscribe. I've been covering the Hawkeyes for over 20 years on the radio, including currently on the Iowa sports radio network. Let's get into the nuts and bolts of this one. Iowa, as bad of a start as you could hope for, or as good of a start if you're an Indiana fan in that one. The interception
Starting point is 00:01:41 off the deflection. Two plays later, Indiana's in the end zone. And after what they did the week previous against Illinois, he said, here we go. This is going to be more domination out of Indiana, much like they did against the alliance. That was not the case. And Iowa gets a field goal, makes it 7.3, a touchdown late in the first half. But, you know, it was just a story of this game. And one thing we talked about a ton this past week about Iowa, you don't have to play perfect. Iowa wasn't perfect today.
Starting point is 00:02:11 But you got to play clean. And they just weren't clean enough to get this victory and get the win against Indiana. I think it opened plenty of people's eyes the way that Iowa competed in this football game. And as Kurt Ferrence talked about leading into the season, he likes this group. He likes this team. They're very coachable. They listen.
Starting point is 00:02:29 They do the things that you need to become a good team. But now with the two losses on the schedule, and you look at them, and for long stretches, Iowa was a better team. And yet you look there and you're three and two on the season, and you're just kind of shaking your head about what's going to be. And we'll get to that a little bit later on of kind of going into the future. But at the end of the half, 10-7, they're going to run the clock out, miss tackle pops out big play on top of it you get a personal foul roughing the quarterback and they get a field goal to tie it up at 10 to 10 and it really it felt so deflating and you can just feel that in kinnick stadium and yet we get into the second half and it gets into the slug fash and even with all the mistackles so much credit to phil parker of the scheme of the game plan that he came up for in this one and what he was able to do players making plays erin graves was outstanding obviously
Starting point is 00:03:25 and entering her. He'll be one of the players to be talked about a ton, those two fourth down stops that he had. And to have the opportunity to do it against such an arrogant SOB and Kirk Sinetti, and he's arrogant for reason. I like, I get that part too, but
Starting point is 00:03:40 to have that opportunity, to just let it fall by the wayside. Mark Grinowski goes out early in the fourth quarter. It doesn't return to the game, and we'll see what that injury is. Got a quote from Kirk Ference. After the game, we'll talk about that a little bit later on. Hank Brown comes in. Hank Brown, tough spot. Had opportunities.
Starting point is 00:04:01 I mean, you go back even to that fourth downplay. And he had, what, Bonamee coming up the sideline and maybe Wichon was even more open up the right side, depending on where that safety was shading over. A guy, only a couple starts in his career and wasn't able to make the plays. And the biggest one is obviously before the hill goal that'll be remembered for a long time. Drew Stevens miss in this one as setting up the screen out to Moulton. It looked like they had it set up incredibly well. It was going to go for a first down, and then Iowa from there could basically, you know, center the ball, get it back to the middle.
Starting point is 00:04:39 We're on a couple of plays and then try to kick a chip-shot field goal to win the game as time expires. Instead, plays not completed. You got to make that play. You have to make that play if you're Hank Brown, and he didn't. and then Drew Stevens has to make that kick. And we continue kind of the thought process of what would have been, obviously culminating with the 49-yard touchdown that proved to be the difference in the football game. This is going to be one that's going to sting for a while.
Starting point is 00:05:12 And this was a winnable football game. You can look back at the 0-11 record. We talked about that 0-10, 10 consecutive losses to ranked opponents, and so many times Iowa was outmaned. A lot of people thought Iowa was outmaned here. And that's another frustrating part. You know, just the idiocy that was out there, that Iowa was going to get blown out,
Starting point is 00:05:32 that Iowa doesn't have a chance. I mean, come on. It's like you haven't seen this team and this program playing a Kiddick Stadium. It's just, it's stupid. There was a lot of stupid takes out there. And to have everything in front of you and to have a couple of miscues
Starting point is 00:05:48 that proved to be the difference, that's where the frustration lies. the frustration is there, that everything was in place. When Lutmer had the interception, and he's running up the sideline and saying, I was actually going to pull this thing off against the story of college football in a lot of circles last week, what Indiana did, and they're back and they're a playoff team, and he can give them a warp before they get into the, really, the meat of their schedule, and he gave them a loss, and he gave yourself hope.
Starting point is 00:06:16 I was going to go to 2-0 on the season with the win here. kick, give up a big play, miss tackle, the way you go. On a day that the Iowa defense played so well, on a day where the defense stepped up and looked like a Phil Parker defense, to have it end like that, it's tough to swallow. This whole game, tough to swallow. Speaking to Mark Grinowski, Grinowski, after that early interception was, again, a tip ball.
Starting point is 00:06:51 He was outstanding. And we talked about this last week in the win against Rutgers where this was the Mark Grinowski that we thought we were going to get. This was the quarterback play for Iowa that we've been just absolutely week after week after week talking about. Can Iowa just get some competency? And they had that. Mark Grinowski was good.
Starting point is 00:07:14 Mark Grinowski was making plays. I mean, the third down throws, right decisions, finding different guys. He was right there. He was on point. and then an injury, and he leaves. I will see about how deep that injury goes. Speaking of that, here is the quote from Kirk Farrants in the post-game press conference as I bring it up here, and the question that came about Gernowski.
Starting point is 00:07:37 He said, other than he came out of the tent, and you guys all saw that, didn't feel like he could decelerate. That was the issue. Some positive feedback. We'll get testing tomorrow and see where it's at, and we'll know more. So there it is on Grinowski. Obviously, we will hear more, I'm sure, earlier this week. With the by week coming up this week for Iowa is their idol
Starting point is 00:07:58 before they go on the road against Wisconsin. Iowa, these are going to be tough practices. You know, these are going to be ones, I don't know, Iowa football. Kirk Farrants, 24-hour rule. And times you kind of roll your eyes, but they have been so good. Those losses don't linger. They don't fester. I was Ben, this is another one of the strengths of Kirk parents.
Starting point is 00:08:25 I didn't get the team to bounce back. I think the off week comes at a good time. Jennings Dunker let the game. He missed a few snaps in the football game. We saw the injury to both Stevens, so they're banged up up front and that offensive line. Credit to Indiana, the Hoosiers defense specifically, because that was really the story in the game.
Starting point is 00:08:44 Iowa's inability to get much going in the run game. And Camarie Moulton, he grinded out 75. years in the game on 18 carries, had that long at 22, setting up the initial score, the first touchdown of the game for Iowa as they took that 10-7 lead late in the first half. Talked about Grinowski, what he was able to do. Sam Phillips continuing to make plays, and it's something we talked about for weeks now, have to have him involved.
Starting point is 00:09:10 I mean, just need to get more out of him. This one, top. So where does Iowa go? Talk about that. What's the season going to look like? How's it going to play out? We will do that as we continue here. A rapid reaction podcast, Iowa falls to Indiana 2015.
Starting point is 00:09:26 We continue, locked on Hawkeyes. Well, NFL is here as we listen to this likely on Sunday. Fanduil has an offer you don't want to miss. Starting point is 00:10:36 Trent, I'm back with you once again on the lockdown Hawkeyes podcast. Rapid reaction after Iowa falls to Indiana 2015. Hawkeyes now one-and-one on the season. in the Big Ten, three and two overall, and as we talked about. Coming up next, it's a bye week before they make their way to Wisconsin. Now, the Badgers, they got their own set of issues. Now, this is a team that might be dead team walking. I mean, Iowa comes, I think, into a really good spot,
Starting point is 00:11:05 a really good situational play in that one. The health of Mark Grunowski is going to be a huge part of that, though. As Grinowski has shown those improvements these last couple of weeks, You have to go into that game with Hank Brown. We might be having a different conversation and certainly a different path to victory for Iowa going on the road. And then it's Penn State coming to town. Penn State falling to Oregon.
Starting point is 00:11:30 They're going to be a desperate team at that point. In fact, when you look at Penn State what they have after this one, after they lose in overtime to Oregon, they go to UCLA. They're home for Northwestern. I mean, two of the easiest opponents in the Big Ten before they make the road trip here. to Iowa City. The good news is the week, the game after that, is Ohio State. Unfortunately, though, there's a buy after that.
Starting point is 00:11:55 So we'll see if anything comes out of that. Penn State, Drew Aller, didn't look great. Kinnick's going to be charged up, and let's see. As Penn State team is loaded, but they got James Franklin. They got warts. We'll see what they're looking like here coming up in a couple of weeks. Then it is still at home as Iowa brings in Minnesota. toss-up type of game. Iowa, probably a slight favorite in the game
Starting point is 00:12:19 against the gophers. Feel good. Bill Parker and company, their defenses have done a good job in the past, and Iowa overall has done a good job against Minnesota, feel relatively confident, again, with that health, that they can get that one. You know, and then Oregon comes to town in November, and it's a game that I pointed to. Iowa, again, will be coming off a buy, and there's just something about that game. I know Oregon's really good. I know they're really fast, but going back, seeing Oregon at different times where they get stuck in the mud, much like this Indiana team and those high-powered offense going on the road, I just have always had a feeling about that game.
Starting point is 00:13:00 But for argument's sake, let's say Iowa beats Wisconsin, beats Minnesota, loses the big two. They go to USC who loses that Illinois. We also know Iowa's issues on the West Coast. Michigan State at home, never know what you're going to get if it's good aid and Childs, Michigan State can come in to Kinnick and win. If you get bad Aiden Childs, Iowa could win the game 44-14. I mean, that's just, that's the reality of what you get, certainly out of that Michigan State team with Aiden Childs at the helm.
Starting point is 00:13:27 And they wrap up in Nebraska. That'll be a field goal game and maybe goes Iowa's way. Is it going to be a special season? No, probably not. And with the lost Iowa State and Indiana already on the resume. Now, if Iowa can find a way to pull one of the big upsets, be to Penn State or in Oregon, one of the two, I run the table the rest of the way at 9 and 3.
Starting point is 00:13:48 It's not likely, but remember, the teams we were arguing at the end of last season to get into the college football playoff were not in three teams. Alabama, South Carolina, Illinois was throwing their hat into the ring. And if I was losses are to just say, for instance, an Iowa state team, I very well could win the Big 12, certainly in the conversation. An Indiana team that doesn't look like they've taken any kind of major step back from what they were a year ago and probably a good team. team. Then either Penn State or Oregon, coupled with a win against the other one that they don't
Starting point is 00:14:21 beat, it's a pretty good resume. Good enough to be a playoff team, probably not. Name recognition, also probably a piece of that also. But there is still things to play for. There still is. And this is a young team. There's a lot of new faces. And as we talked about at the top with Kirk and a reason that he just wondered about this squad because there were so many young faces. He talked about that too. Especially defensively in the mistackles, it was a lot of talk about guys that just don't have the experience. Even Entering her with those great defensive plays, he talked about him a little bit. It just hasn't had a whole lot. I mean, we talked about him going to Vegas for Big Ten football media days. That's a guy that only had one career start. I mean, just how rare
Starting point is 00:15:06 that that was. We talked about last week the DNA of an upset. What's it take? And when When Iowa has so many elements, when Iowa does so many of those things, I can't get it done. It just leaves a pit of despair. And I know after a loss, frustrations are going to mount. There's going to be a lot of disappointment. There's going to be calling for Kirk's head. That's what you guys do. I'm not going to do that here.
Starting point is 00:15:33 It was there. Make a play. Make a play on third and five. You got a chip shot to win the football game. Make a kick. You're up three. and the pressure definitely is on Indiana with that charged up crowd.
Starting point is 00:15:47 We're unable to do it. Get a hand up. Maybe that ball's deflected. We're having a different one on the 49-yard touchdown. Alas, here we are. 2015. If you're getting the points with the Hawks, you're feeling great. If you were laying six and a half with Indiana
Starting point is 00:16:03 that some of the opening lines were earlier in the week, oh boy, I'd talk about a bad beat on that one. We will be back with you next week. mentioned basketball. A lot of news and notes to get into there. Addison Bjorn on campus this week, one of the top players in the country for 2006. We'll get an update on that and a whole lot more. Also next week we will hear from the coordinators, both Phil Parker, I believe, and also Tim Lester will hear from both of those guys next week as Iowa normally does during their first bye week of the season. So that's coming up for you next week. Basketball talk as we start to get ready for hoops, but of course, a lot of football talk each and every day.
