Iowa has joined the modern world and going after top-notch quarterbacks.
Can the Hawkeyes get it done?
Locked On presents The Portal, the daily podcast covering college
football recruiting and everything NIL.
Part of the Locked On podcast network.
Your team every day.
Welcome back into the portal. I am your host Brian Smith, longtime college
football recruiting analyst and writer. Thank you for making the portal your
first listen each and every day. You can find us on Apple, Spotify, YouTube and
anywhere you get your pods. And today we're going to be talking about the
Iowa Hawkeyes actually throwing the football around using athletic
quarterbacks. What a concept. They're actually joining the
rest of the world. And there's no better guy to have talk about
it. Walked on Hawkeyes host Trent Conde. Trent, how you
doing, brother?
I'm doing well. Good to see you again, Brian. And during this
offseason for a lot of us, at least football wise, I know
you're always busy here and excited to get the Hawkeye
perspective out there on your your new your new show, the portal.
Yeah, man, this is, this is a blast talk football recruiting transfer portal
and NIL seven days a week.
It is my world.
You sent me two guys that, and I saw them.
I'm like, okay, here we go.
Iowa quarterback recruiting.
I felt this is going to be terrible.
The last time you sent me somebody it didn't work out so long.
I'm just going to leave it at that.
These two guys are good in the past 10 years.
I'm trying to think of somebody at quarterback that I was excited about at Iowa.
I can't think of one.
I like Casherrera, and if they get Peyton Fowl, is it Fowlzone or Fowlzone?
I'm not sure.
I'm not sure on the pronunciation.
What I do know is that dude is a stud.
And you're going to be able to tell us a little bit more.
And it's kind of crazy with both of these guys.
So first, he kind of set it up with Iowa, obviously,
has gone through some change and some evolution
at the offensive coordinator spot.
So after seven years of Brian Farrant's,
that had varying degrees of success,
and then obviously cratered the last two seasons when quarterback play was awful. But also during that time period, you know, Iowa had a
couple of good runs. You go back to when they beat Ohio State 55-24, you know, that season and they
had some good offensive numbers. And overall for Iowa, who's not an up-tempo team, not going to
have, you know, 90 snaps a game, they were at least middle of the pack offensively, but then it started to take a step back.
And the biggest reason was after Nate Stanley,
who was perfectly fine, a very adequate quarterback
at the Big 10 level, hung around for a couple of years
in the NFL, he was completely fine.
But after that, the quarterback recruiting
just completely fell apart.
And one of the reasons that people believe that
is Ken O'Keefe was the quarterback coach. He was a
longtime offensive coordinator, went then to the NFL, was with
the Dolphins with Joe Philbin, who was their assistant
together at the University of Iowa. And when O'Keefe came
back, he was late in his career. And you wonder if that
eye for talent, maybe he tried it up or it just kind of took
the easy route. Hey, these guys, they're happy to commit to
Iowa. We don't have to do a whole lot of sale because you look at the recruiting,. Hey, these guys, they're happy to commit to Iowa. We don't
have to do a whole lot of sale because you look at the recruiting, you look at the misses, there's a
whole lot there. But probably the biggest one, you remember Spencer Petrus, who turned out to be a
three-year starter for Iowa. Going into that recruiting class, Iowa had a commitment from a
quarterback, but got bailed out. So they went back in, they looked who was available. There were two
quarterbacks that they really liked. They set up two visits they went back in. They look who was available. There were two quarterbacks that they
really like. They set up two visits. One was Spencer
Petrus who was committed to Oregon State after Lee
Jonathan Smith left. He wasn't Jonathan Smith, the coach before
that Anderson left. He reopened his commitment. The other one
was a guy that ended up going number two. Now we know it
didn't go very well in New York, but you look at the time at BYU and you look at what Iowa
could have had just with a different quarterback. That was a big change. And, you know, they
just swung and missed. So a lot of people point the finger at Brian Farrant's, I'd probably
be among those. He was given the quarterback coaching job though, after the offense was
showing some signs of struggles, Ken O'Keefe retires, and then they double down and they give Brian
Farrance the quarterback coaching duties and it completely fell apart after that.
So that's the reason I think you've seen just such a huge step back and the hope is now
with Tim Lester taking over as the offensive coordinator, a guy that actually has a background
in quarterbacks, then they can get the ship right at IQB.
Well, the great news for Iowa i
they have a quarterback c
a kid committed in cash h
threat has just an insane
the pocket. But he remind
a big better in high scho
Riley winter like Riley l
the most mobile in the pocket,
guys. This kid is just exa
passer at this stage than
mile. Now for full disclos
a basketball player for mo
average like 25 points a
area. He's really good at
a kid that Iowa ever getz San plays in the greater San Diego area.
The only knock I have is not on him.
It's the school he plays at.
Competition is not that great, but you should dominate it, and he does.
And the greatest thing about it is arm strength and accuracy on the deep ball.
You can make up for a million things if you're good with the deep ball.
He'll throw it going into the bench with a guy right on his tail and drop it in the bucket.
Okay, this is Iowa football now. He will start as a redshirt freshman at Iowa.
Seems he's got to learn the offense. They don't have anybody like him. They don't. He may even play some. I don't like it, but he may even play some as a freshman.
They don't have guys like him on. There's somebody you're going to tell me about.
freshmen. They don't have guys like him on. There's somebody you're going to tell me about. I don't think so. You know, Jimmy
Sullivan is the kid that they just signed in the class of
2025. He was a yeah, he was a holdover from the previous
regime. And Tim Lester when he got the job, he looked at him.
He liked him, watched him throw. And he commit he kept the offer
there for Jimmy Sullivan in the class of 2025. And I do know
they really do like him. But you're right. Now, another thing about this quarterback room, unless in the class of 2025 and I do know they really do like him but you're right. Now another thing
about this quarterback room and less than a calendar year this thing has been completely
retooled from Iowa. Tim Lester came in he saw the parts there he saw the freshmen he saw the young
guys he saw the veterans and he completely cleaned house so they did it very very quickly you look
at that quarterback room so they bring in Mark Gronowski for this year, the one year kind of stopgap guy. And I want to also probably get your thoughts on a guy that I know
you saw in high school, Hank Brown, who was at Auburn, played at Auburn this past season,
a couple of different games. He started against New Mexico, got the win, didn't look very good in the
SEC opener then after that, but he's a guy still has three years of eligibility, is not going to be
thrust in to the starter role. That's Mark Gr He's not going to be thrust into the starter role.
That's Mark Grunowski is going to be the starter here,
but more a developmental guy.
He's got a connection.
He's from Naperville in Illinois.
Guess who's also from there?
Tim Lester.
His parents and Tim Lester went to high school together.
So he's a guy that I think people are excited about.
But then after that, you talk about these guys at Cash
Herrera, Peyton Palazone, two guys
that are a different breed, different stock than what I was used to.
And you're doing it with a coach that I think most everybody believes.
This is a guy that at minimum, he knows what it takes at the quarterback position.
He was a high level guy in high school, got injured, had to go to Western Michigan and put up big numbers there.
Tim Blaster knows quarterbacks.
And I think that's where the excitement comes from the Iowa perspective.
Well, let me just start with Hank Brown.
I live in Auburn.
I go to almost all their home games and I'm on the field.
Hank looks the park.
Hank's fairly mobile and he's a really great kid, but in a private
school in Tennessee is the last year.
So I don't think there's any doubt that he will fit into Iowa's culture.
That's first.
It's very important checkbox cleared there.
But when he got into the SEC game, he saw ghosts immediately. It's culture. That's first. It's very important. Checkbox cleared there. But when he got into the sec game, he saw ghosts immediately. It's different.
He was so awful in that first half. They yanked him. He really didn't play
again. So I don't, there's not much film of him against sec. And the one
time he did play at three picks and a half. So arms there, mobility is
there. Great kid. kids, got size.
I think the advantage, like, I don't know how much they're going to run now because they're changing their offense some, but Auburn is extremely heavy with RPO.
It gets 75% of their offense. And they got the athletes, I mean, they got Cam Coleman outside, I'd run it.
But at the same time, what is Iowa going to do with him? They still need to be better upfront on both sides of the ball, as I'm sure you would agree.
If they establish the run with a kid like this, he'll go get you four yards on third
and two on a scramble.
Now, he's not Michael Vick.
Yeah.
He'll extend plays.
And Iowa hasn't even had that consistently over the last decade.
And that's some guys.
And he's, again, he'll fit in, he'll do things.
He'll probably be a starter for a year or so.
But again, Herrera is another level of athlete.
Okay. And Hank, I mean, but again, like Herrera is another level of athlete. Okay.
And Hank, I mean, the experience, I get it.
The old school staff at Iowa probably would rather start the event.
Oh yeah.
Oh yeah.
But at some point, he's going to have to take major strides and do better when the pocket
collapse.
He's terrible in the pocket collapses.
That's at the end of the day, you have to take pain and complete passes at quarterback.
That is his biggest ailment right now.
He gets over that hump, all the other parts are there.
So I'm happy for Iowa in that regard.
But the next kid we're gonna talk about, Trent,
and I wanna get into this more specifically,
is in my opinion, as I told you before the show,
the most important recruit in Iowa's history
of the last 10 years, conservatively, if not longer.
I'm not saying he's Chuck Long,
but this kid could be in the Heisman race at some point.
That is next here on the forum.
Or from here.
Trent, the next guy to talk about,
and this is a really important guy for Iowa,
Falzone or Falzone, I apologize. I don't know how to pronounce his name, but Peyton Falzone,
I'll just go with that. For Pennsylvania is an elite player, 22 plus miles per hour,
that's with catapult, that equipment they put on him. He has the athleticism to make people,
I don't even know how I want to put this. He has the athleticism to make people just look stupid.
Now in high school, a kid that's 6'4", 6'5",
give or take 200 pounds should do that.
But at the same time, I don't think there are many guys
that I was even trying to recruit like him.
What was the last dual threat that you thought
that they got that was, I mean, just like straight up,
this guy can beat you if he has a bad day throwing.
Yeah.
It's just, it's not what they look for.
They look for that prototypical Brian Ferentz like the big strong on quarterback and the
guy that, yes, you wanted a guy that could move around a little bit.
And that was a part of it, but there was never a great athlete.
You know, we mentioned Nate Stanley.
What made Nate Stanley good in the run game was quarterback sneaks.
I mean, he was just so strong and he was able to get behind it and go back to the holiday bull win that they had against
USC when they're just quarterback and sneaking from the five yard line, knowing that they're
going to be able to push him twice and get into the end zone and didn't even need that one of the
times as they were able to do it. So he liked that kind of guy. When you're talking about
a guy that could move around, I mean, I go back way back to like Marvin McNutt, who turned out to
be a wide receiver for them and a very good one in the early 2010s. That's how far back you have to go. They recruited him out of St. Louis as a quarterback. He was there for less than a calendar year before switching positions and moving to the wide receiver position. And even Marvin McNutt, the reason he didn't stick in the NFL, he was a real fast guy, which, you know, for a wide receiver is kind of crazy. He was more of that big body type of guy. And it just shows you the prototype. I mean, do we have to go back to Brad banks? We're talking about going on almost 25 years ago, 23 years ago now from his Heisman runner up season. So it's just something that I was. Yes, you want athletes, you want guys that could move around. But when you're talking about a pure dual threat quarterback, it's not something that has a true Tate was a guy that moved around. But you never think of him as a dual threat. He'd move around in the pocket. He was as good escaping pressure as anybody that I've ever seen in a Hawkeye uniform, but it's not that tuck it and run kind of guy.
Question I had though about Peyton Felzone is he does have a visit set up with Iowa. He's going to be coming to Iowa City in April during spring practice and getting a look around campus. Also has a visit set up with Utah. I watched the tape. I was impressed, but I usually am impressed with everybody's tape
because I don't have the same kind of discerning eye that you do. Why doesn't he have some bigger offers?
I mean, why does he seem to be a little bit down further the pecking order of the quarterbacks in the class of 2026?
I think there's two primary reasons. This is the case
every year. This won't change. All the camps start down south because of weather. If he's going to
go to an under armor camp, it'll probably be the Baltimore one. That's not for another month or two.
Gotcha. And he's also at a school that's not normally dominant. I mean, he's murdering people,
but he should be. So like if he played down
where I live, I live in Auburn, Alabama. He played at Auburn High. If he played at Thompson
over in Burma, totally different. He'd have eyeballs on him every week because there's
somebody going by his high school for practice and every one of his games is filmed and sent
out everywhere. He's in I think Nazareth pencil. I don't even know where that's at. So that's why. Like, he's the kid they get once every 50 years. Yeah. So it's a great story. But,
again, if you play against kids that you're better than, guess what you should do? Trent,
you should kick the crap out of them. You should kick the crap out of them. And here's the other
part of this. This is just my understanding of how this works.
I've seen it at several programs over the last few years.
I was not going to out recruit Georgia and Ohio State in Texas.
OK, I get that.
But if you have a Pied Piper at quarterback
and you get the kind of coaching that Iowa has,
and we both agree, as far as tackling, blocking,
understanding angles on offense and defense
and their special
teams being consistent. You don't turn the ball over and make a few big third downs and
your quarterback's a leader. You can compete with anybody on a given day. I was a quarterback
away from being the most annoying team in college football because they're already annoying,
but you know they're not going to score over 20 points against equality. They're not. He's
going to give you another touchdown. So if they can get him away and pins for those that wonder Penn State is offered.
Yes.
The Penn State offers an in-state quarterback. Okay. He's really good. So again, he's not from a,
oh my God program. Alabama's looking at him. Penn State's offered. Iowa likes him. He's run over
22 mile an hour. This is a game changing quarterback for the Hawkeyes.
I know that it would be, I hope they get in
because I root for change in college football.
And if he goes to Penn State, I get that.
I don't think he'll go to Alabama
because they just got Keelan Russell.
I'd be kind of surprised.
I wouldn't want to follow that.
He's unbelievable.
So we'll see.
The Penn State part of it, And yes, he does have an offer
Do you look at it though is maybe is he being slow-played a little bit?
I mean, I'm sure Penn State's after a couple of top shelf guys and and maybe he's the second third and they're packing order
They're kind of slow playing him
I mean, could you see that being why a he hasn't committed yet a Pennsylvania kid that has a Penn State offer or
Do you see it maybe in a different way? Well, I'm guessing he has connections outside the state.
I don't know about him personally, but think about this.
Iowa's in on him, may get a visit. Utah is getting a visit
for a kid from Pennsylvania. This isn't a normal
family background. I would bet my bottom dollar on that.
I've never heard of a kid from Pennsylvania early on visiting Utah. So in like the head coach,
you know, the whole situation is up in the air. So we retired right there
offensive court. I mean, they've got all kinds of change. So I'm guessing he has
some unusual connections. Now, Penn State may have him number one on their
board. Maybe they got him. I have no idea. But they like mobile quarterbacks.
So they want to kind of go to that based on Koueniki being there. Of course, he was
at Kansas. You're familiar with really good coordinator. So he fits. So, I mean, it's Penn
State. I get that. But the other thing is Penn State already has a quarterback in this classroom,
California. Now he's really good. I'd seen him play before, but that was before all this kind of,
like this kid blew up just past season.
This kid went nuts. Would they take a second quarterback or they still going to stick with the other kid?
I don't know. He's California guy. So this is ripe for the picking, whether it's Iowa or somebody else.
I'm guessing Pittsburgh can't recruit itself out of a wet paper sack in state.
They can't get anybody that Penn State wants. Notre Dame, Ohio State, Michigan,
go in there and kill them, et cetera.
Iowa does.
This kid could go anywhere.
It could be one of the more interesting recruitments,
especially if he doesn't commit really early.
Like, you know, wait May, early June,
everybody takes the rubies.
If he sticks it out, maybe it is Alabama
or Georgia or somebody outside.
And then Iowa, like Iowa would take him
if they got somebody else.
There's no way Iowa wouldn't take him
as a second quarterback in my opinion.
But when we come back,
we're gonna talk about a few in-state prospects,
including an offensive tackle that is committed to Iowa
that I love, I wanna get Trent's thoughts on that.
That is next here on the court.

Trent, this is good, bad, or indifferent for you
when you kind of look at,
I'll give you the big box question here.
2026 in-state, where would you say it is
for as being on par with a normal year
for the in-state talent?
You know, there's a couple of really high-end guys
that I really like, and unfortunately
from an Iowa perspective,
probably are not going to be Hawkeyes.
The first is Jayden McGregory.
Now, full disclosure, I live in West Des Moines.
I used to teach in the Valley School District.
So know a lot of people, know a lot of coaches.
They have nothing but great things
to say about him as an athlete.
He transferred in from one of the public schools in city
from Des Moines North after his freshman campaign.
He's a tremendous basketball player.
Just watched him a couple of different times.
Yet, Iowa hasn't offered.
And it's so interesting because Iowa has a good relationship
with the Valley staff. It's, you know, it's nothing like that. I'm talking to people.
He's a good kid. It's nothing. They're just, for whatever reason, something that Phil Parker
apparently doesn't like about him, or maybe they just know that he's a guy that's looking
to get out of state. And that could be something too. I know Minnesota is heavily involved.
Georgia is offered. Not very often we get the Bulldogs offering guys out of the state of Iowa. That was definitely an eye opener. So I really
like McGregory. Like I said, unfortunately, I don't think he's going to be a Hawkeye.
And the other one is the tight end Evan Jacobson from walkie. In fact, speaking of basketball,
just called his game last week on the hardwood. He went down with a knee injury within two
minutes of the game and his dad is an orthopedic surgeon here in town.
Dr. Jacobson went running onto the floor.
From the look of it, I thought right away, ACL.
It wasn't, that's the word that I got back
from some of the coaches afterwards.
An athletic director said it didn't appear
to be that after it, so you're hopeful.
But he's a big kid.
Now remember his brother played for the Seattle Seahawks,
Michael, a couple of different years,
who played high school football,
but was a basketball player,
went to Nebraska out of high school,
ended up at Iowa State,
was on a couple of really good Iowa State teams.
And his brother, good basketball player, Evan,
but I think he understands,
looking at what brother was able to do,
not playing college football,
yet sticking in the NFL a couple of years.
I think Evan realizes my bed's,
he could play college basketball. He could play at the division one level college basketball, but he's not playing in the NFL a couple of years. I think Evan realizes my beds, he could play college basketball. He could play at the division one level college
basketball, but he's not playing in the NBA. He has a chance to play in the NFL
and that's gonna be there. But his family connections brother went to
Iowa State Hawkeyes probably are not going to get that call either. Even as
good as I was obviously Bennett developing the tight end position.
Those two guys are really good and I watched Jayden McGregory's film just a little bit ago.
I'd seen it last year.
You told me about him.
His length is insane.
Yeah.
Oh my goodness.
I don't care if it's corn or nickel or safety, we're good.
And I'm guessing that's why Kirby offered it.
They kind of get the pick of the litter down south at DBs
because they're so good with coaching them. So you're
right. When a kid from the state of Iowa has a UGA offer, a
little different player. But the kid that I like that I think is
just got NFL written all over him because Iowa does such a
good job developing is Carson Nielsen. I mean, like, he's
committed. He's from Waterloo, he goes to West. He's at least'6", I'd say, just by looking at him on film, maybe taller. He's got long, long arms. He fits the left tackle mold. Is this, like, he's been committed for a while.
Was he just always a Hawkeye? Was he family? Is it the first part I remember when he committed as what after his freshman year there was a lot of talk about that. Waterloo West is not a power by any means. The Waterloo schools
on the football field have struggled for the better part of 30 years now and haven't been
highly successful. West has been the better of the two so you know you wonder exactly you know what
it's going to look like for him and if he's going to be battle tested. The other part is at the big
school level here in the state of Iowa, central Iowa is where the power is. You look at year after
year the number of teams that make it to the final four to the unit dome and get to play
in the semi finals. It's almost always now teams from central Iowa. So you wonder how
battle tested he's going to be, but this is a guy they're excited about. You mentioned
the size it's there left tackle. And that's something that I was missed on. Now you go back for the last four years now. They've been playing a guy that's going
to play in the NFL at guard and left tackle because they missed. Gain Proctor. Thought
they had them. Then they didn't. Thought they had them again and then didn't have them.
And that has really put I was off into line behind the eight ball is they haven't had
that prototypical left tackle. This is the guy Nielsen that they think is going to do
that. So can they build that bridge for the next couple of years
and find a guy that can play that position
and then hope that after a redshirt year,
Nielsen could be that guy.
When you talk about the athleticism,
talk to people also that just work with him.
I talked to a couple of people that have had him in camps
and said, this kid is gonna put in the work.
There are no corners cut with him.
That's exciting to hear with the guy with that skillset, that size, but that athleticism to be a left tackle.
Yeah, I thought that he was good in space, screen game, getting outside, little things
like he doesn't extend his arms at the right time yet. Just technical stuff that you can't
really worry about. That'll be fixed in about 10 minutes in Iowa city. But his arms are
so long, like got a little bit of a Joe
Alt build. I'm not saying he's bald, but that's what he reminds me of.
Joe was six, seven, and he grew after he got to Notre Dame, but like he was six,
eight and a half or something like that at the Convo. This kid could be that.
I don't think he's quite filled out yet, but if there was a kid that I was sure
about, that I was signing the last few, like this kid just fits the profile.
Yosset's guy.
Yeah. Yeah.
You bring up Joe all that's also another sore spot for Iowa because his dad
played at Iowa and of course played in the NFL for a better part of a decade.
There was a lot of heart hope that he was going to be a Hawk, but unfortunately
it was Notre Dame because that also would have solved that left tackle for
the last four, three seasons.
Yeah.
He started in Notre Dame from the middle of his freshman year on and it was kind
of obvious real quick, but, uh, the one of the kids that I want to ask you about, and I, what a great
name for a town in Iowa, orange city, Iowa, Draven punt, the defense, he's committed to Kansas, but
he's six, five, six, six. Is there any interest for the Hawkeyes? Cause like the frame like that,
does it come out of Iowa all the time.
Are they recruiting him? What's the deal? Why Kansas?
Yeah, he doesn't have an Iowa offer.
And I just think he was, again, and this is this age, probably three years ago even,
he would have had an Iowa offer and he would have committed to Iowa.
But in today's environment with, what are you going to assign?
12, 14, 15 kids in a freshman class because of the portal and the movement. I
think this is a guy that's just a little bit further down their
list. He's from Northwest Iowa. It's a long outpost to in
fact, Kansas. It's not gonna be closer but Lawrence is gonna be
probably about the same distance than Iowa City. So,
that's another one plus the last kid's name is punt. I
mean, what a perfect Iowa football player to have
somebody with the last name punt on there too but I from what I have heard though, he's just a little bit further down the list.
They have a couple of guys that, and defensive line is not something that they're really
targeting a lot in this class too.
That's probably another reason for it.
Well it's just interesting, but Trent, thank you very much.
Always enjoy having you on the show and I enjoy coming on your show as well.

Man, you're a busy dude. I didn't know you did that much. That's a lot to keep up with. Now,
feeling to stay warm while you're doing it. Well, it's it's gonna be tough and we got
state wrestling this week. So, this is gonna be a busy one.
I'll be hanging out at Wells Fargo Arena Wednesday through
a Saturday doing that. It's a busy time but this is the best
time of year at least for me. I stay busy. Got state basketball
coming up girls and boys basketball and of course,
everything happened with the Hawkeyes and then when it gets
to springtime, then I can relax a little bit.
April, May, that's my slow time of the year.
So we're just counting down the days
until we can get to that.
All right, Trent, I appreciate it.
