Starting point is 00:00:00 I thank God I was born on the good arms of the Midwest, and not on the battlefields of the U.S. It's a time of panic, and it's intercepted! It's picked off right away! Intercepted by Marty Hooker! Pick six! Eight seconds into the game! Buffen sets up deep in the pocket, goes down the field for Smith!
Starting point is 00:00:21 Oh! He's got it! Smith! Touchdown. 85 yards. High on. Touchdown, 10. Taking a shot in the end zone.
Starting point is 00:00:32 It is caught. No offense. Touchdown. That's either one or you have it. Go ahead and three. Yes. Two-point lead for the Hawkeyes Podcast. It is 10-3 and as you can see, no Andrew today. He wasn't feeling too well.
Starting point is 00:01:20 But we're just coming back at you today, kind of recapping the AP Top 25, talking about the Movers and Shakers and how it affected the Big Ten teams and how it affected Iowa. If you listened to Monday's episode, Andrew did a great job of breaking down the game of the Middle Tennessee game, kind of taking you through his MVPs, taking you through what he thought the Hawkeyes did well and what they did bad. But today, like I said, I'm going to be taking you through the AP Top 25. But before we start, I always want to say to make sure to comment, like, and subscribe wherever you listen to this podcast, whether that be Himalaya, whether that be Apple Podcasts or Spotify or Stitcher. We'll be dropping new hype videos every week, so keep an eye out for that. And, yeah, so just jumping right into it today um ap top 25
Starting point is 00:02:26 what kind of happened with the big 10 teams do and how did that affect iowa so kind of going into the week we kind of knew that iowa probably wasn't going to do a whole lot of moving in regards to it with middle tennessee um even with the 45 point thrashing we still stayed to top or in the middle at 14 um there wasn't a whole lot of movement uh with an ap top 25 um the biggest mover was ucf moving up four spots from 22 to 18 and then virginia moving down five spots from 18 to 23 so let's kind of take a look at kind of how the big 10 performed how the teams in the at top ap top 25 that are from the big 10 did and kind of how the Big Ten performed, how the teams in the AP Top 25 that are from the Big Ten did, and kind of how the landscape is changing, how kind of the puzzle pieces are coming together in regards to that. So the first game I wanted to talk about was Penn State and Maryland. Going
Starting point is 00:03:15 into this game, I believe I made the prediction that Maryland would kind of keep this game competitive, would kind of, you know, make Penn State work a little more for this game but I mean I couldn't be more wrong uh Penn State came into Maryland and just absolutely destroyed them at 59 zero I mean Sean Clifford went out there led the Penn State in rushing and led in passing at four total touchdowns over 400 yards rushing and passing and then KJ Hamlerler, a.k.a. the human joystick, went out there and had over 100 yards and a touchdown. Man, Maryland get off to a hot start. I really thought they were going to be a sleeper team the big time this year.
Starting point is 00:03:52 They're scoring points at will. I loved McFarlane. I loved their quarterback, Jackson. But I don't know what happened. I don't know what mentally things are occurring, if they just lost their confidence or what. But, I mean, losing to Temple is a bad loss. Penn State's not necessarily a bad loss, but losing 59 points and not even putting
Starting point is 00:04:10 up a touchdown, that's tough against a Penn State team that kind of looks shaky coming into this week. The next game I wanted to talk about was Ohio State and Nebraska. This is going to be a fun segment for me. If you're a first-time listener, I don't like Nebraska. I don't think a lot of people in Iowa do like Nebraska. So this 48-7 thrashing was enjoyable to watch. I mean, it was cool to see the Big Ten getting a college game day and not being the typical Penn State, Ohio State, or Michigan-type matchup. So that was really good to see. And that was kind of exciting
Starting point is 00:04:46 to be a part of that as a Big Ten team. But I mean, I didn't really know what to expect. I thought Nebraska would make it a little more competitive. I mean, as you can see, Ohio State looks like their supernatural team. They look like a human cheat code. They look like when you go into Madden and create your own team and make everyone a 99. They look impossible. And frankly, I don't really know who can beat them. I really think that they're better than Clemson. I think that them and Alabama will be competitive, but I think that they really should be, deserve to be, you know, I think they should be the second team in the college football playoffs instead of four. I think they could beat Georgia. Georgia is the competitive SEC team, but I do think Ohio State is a top three team, if not top two. So that was awesome to see. I mean,
Starting point is 00:05:31 I don't know what's happening in Nebraska. They definitely lost their swagger. Not even putting up a fight, having college game day there, Gabrielle Union being there, Dwayne Wade there being there to put on for you guys and just came out with a whole lot of nothing. It's just that, you know, college game day coming in there, and all the fans, and it just was such a big deal going to Lincoln, but man, that was just really tough. It was a tough game to watch. I was at a bar watching the game, and I just, it was like a, it was like, it looked like a video game. That's just Ohio State scoring. Every time I looked up, I would talk to some friends, look up, score, score, score, big run, big pass, score. And Nebraska just looked like they were just out – they're out-competed on the floor. They're out-talent, out-willed, just everything you could be outdone on the field, they were outdone.
Starting point is 00:06:16 I mean, Nebraska doesn't look that good, man. I don't think they're going to be the big-time West contender that we all thought they were going to be. And just kind of showing that, you the arizona martinez is good they do have potential on the team but it just doesn't look like that this is going to be the year it looks a little premature for those big 10 west dark horse contender uh you know predictions that a lot of these uh so-called analysts had in the beginning of the year but you know this game proved nebraska looks like you know they are team with a whole not a whole lot of motivation ohio Nebraska looks like they are a team with not a whole lot of motivation. Ohio State looks like a super team. Moving on to the games, we had Northwestern
Starting point is 00:06:51 at Wisconsin. If you kind of just looked at the game's box score, you would see that Wisconsin won by nine points. It's not too much of a blowout. I mean, I think everyone, after seeing the Michigan game, they would kind of expect Wisconsin to blow out Northwestern, but Northwestern actually scored 12 of their 15 points in the fourth quarter. So Wisconsin was handling Northwestern. They weren't blowing them out, but it's just, they're outmanned. Northwestern can't really win they can't catch a break they just look like a team that just doesn't have the talent hunter johnson uh just doesn't look like he has the ability this year to be that elite quarterback to get them to the next level in wisconsin although they didn't blow northwestern out it was still a solid big time win they're
Starting point is 00:07:39 4-0 jonathan taylor looks good he didn't have a monster game but he still looked good he had a big fourth down run that ended up being a touchdown to pull Wisconsin ahead even more. Manager talked about the Iowa-Middle Tennessee game. My two cents, Iowa looked great. That was an old-fashioned whipping, and I'm really excited to build out that momentum going into Michigan. Kind of going into the next game will be Rutgers and Michigan,
Starting point is 00:08:05 but before we go, we're going to give you a word from our sponsors. But even before that, you're going to get ad read Zach here. Starting point is 00:09:39 That will kind of be touched upon in the third segment. As you might say, it's kind of having a loose day. We're kind of going with the flow. If you're a first-time listener, this is my first time hosting, so we're kind of just hopping on the Zach train and we're just going to follow wherever we end up here. So this game, Michigan Rutgers, I mean, if you look at the box score, I mean, there's not really anything else you could see from that. It was a 52-0 loss. Rutgers went to the big house after a Michigan team got absolutely dismantled at Camp Randall.
Starting point is 00:10:12 So you could only assume that they had a chip on their shoulder and they were angry and pissed off. Rutgers, after coming out of that first game and beating UMass, putting up all those points on the board, and people, you know with McLean being there and everyone's like oh he's a Texas Tech transfer Rutgers could be the new team they could turn uh the Leaf not be you know necessarily winning a bowl game but hey winning maybe four to five games this year who knows even six and kind of just uh not being a total laughingstock of the big 10 but as you could probably assume, that didn't happen. Michigan went out there. There's firing on all cylinders.
Starting point is 00:10:52 Shea Patterson had a pretty decent day. Nothing too crazy. Only threw it 23 times, but had 276 yards and one touchdown. So nothing too crazy, but it just kind of showed that Michigan was able to run all over Rutgers. A lot of people kind of talk about this game comparing when we're talking about Iowa and Michigan. And a lot of the analysts this week I saw talked about, so Michigan played Middle Tennessee and they played Rutgers, whom Iowa both played them as well. And they go, yeah, well, Iowa dismantled Middle Tennessee by 45 points and Michigan only won by 19 or whatever that score was.
Starting point is 00:11:27 But Michigan really went out there and they took care of business against a Rutgers team and beat them more than Iowa did. But to those analysts, I don't really know how you're comparing both the two. Both Iowa and Michigan shut the team out. Iowa won 30-0, Michigan 152-0. And it's just kind of a little absurd that these analysts are going off that basis of that kind of Michigan looked like the better team because they're able to win by more. If you know any Iowa team and you're familiar with Kirk Ferentz and Brian Ferentz and that team,
Starting point is 00:12:00 they are not the type of SEC team, Big 12 team, to step on your throat, to heave the ball downfield. When they were up in that game, they ran the ball a lot. They played clock possession, short throws. They weren't kind of just piling it on. So Michigan team and Iowa team, Michigan won by 20 more points. We bullshut them out. I don't really care about that game.
Starting point is 00:12:23 Michigan also had something to prove after getting absolutely embarrassed. That Wisconsin game might as well have been 52- 0 against michigan because that's what it looked like and that's the level of effort it looked like on the field that uh two weeks ago so yeah like we said michigan came out 52-0 and then also it looked like michigan state took a visit at home from the indiana hoosiers and listen i think I think that Michigan State is one of those teams is that they're incredibly boring. They lost to Arizona State. That was a bad loss. As we'll get to Arizona State actually had another quality one against Cal. So it looks like, you know, it may not be a complete joke of an ASU football programs. I thought they'd be, I thought they're very overrated, but it looks like that that may not be a complete joke of an ASU football program as I thought they'd be. I thought they were very overrated, but it looks like that may not be the case.
Starting point is 00:13:10 Indiana came there, and if you did watch the game, that game was really close. It was back and forth. Indiana actually tied it up at one point. In the fourth quarter, there was a total of 33 points scored, which is pretty absurd from any two Big Ten teams playing each other, especially Indiana and Michigan State. Indiana looks good. They're 3-2. I mean, they're only 2 in the Big Ten, playing each other, especially Indiana and Michigan State. Indiana looks good. They're 3-2.
Starting point is 00:13:26 I mean, they're only 2 in the Big Ten, but it looks like they have some players. They have some playmakers on that squad. A guy named Wap Fillier. I don't even know how to say his name. 14 catches, 142 yards, two tutties for Indiana. I mean, that's an awesome day. Indiana showing that they're growing as a program.
Starting point is 00:13:44 They may not be an elite powerhouse or anything of that nature, but it does look like they are growing as a program and that they are making the right moves to kind of make themselves a little more of a contender in the Big Ten. Michigan State looks good. They won by nine. They're at home. The game was a little too close for comfort,
Starting point is 00:14:01 but they still pulled out the win in 4-1-1's 4-1-1. And next week they visit, or they play Ohio State, which is going to be an interesting game as well. We'll touch on on Friday's episode, but the last game of the week from the Big Ten would be Minnesota at Purdue. I mean, not a whole lot to talk about in this game. I mean, Minnesota looked really good, actually. I hate Minnesota, so I don't really want to give them too much kudos but bateman holy crap and tanner morgan they all looked amazing tanner morgan almost 400 yards four tutties only had one incompletion two for 400 yards and four touchdowns and only had one incompletion 21 or 22 that is absurd uh rashad bateman six for 177 two touchdowns from minnesota looks just that's video game stats they performed
Starting point is 00:14:44 well uh minnesota does have some solid receivers and tanner mor It looks just that's video game stats. They performed well. Minnesota does have some solid receivers, and Tanner Morgan looks like he's kind of coming into his own. Minnesota's 4-0. They may have some sloppy wins, but, hey, they're still 4-0. It still counts all the same, 1-0 in the Big Ten. And Purdue looks like they just need, they just look like they lost all will. Rondell Moore left the game,
Starting point is 00:15:04 so it kind of looked like a lot of the heart was kind of taken out of them and that uh game but i mean i you know purdue doesn't look good they definitely this year is kind of one to throw away and one to definitely uh kind of not you're gonna have to build on next year they just don't look like the program i thought they're going to be especially losing to a minnesota team at home which i thought they could definitely beat and i didn't't think Minnesota was that good, but it just showed that Minnesota may not blow teams out like we've seen, but they can win the game, which I guess at the end of the day is all that matters.
Starting point is 00:15:32 Going into segment three, we're going to be talking about the AP Top 25, movers and shakers and that, some of those games. Did it affect Iowa? Did it affect the landscape of the AP 25 and things like that? But before that, we're going to give you another award from our sponsor. Alright, we're back and we'll be talking about the AP25 landscape now. I know we kind of talked a little bit of nausea
Starting point is 00:16:00 at the Big Ten and those games. It wasn't a whole lot of great games last week. You know, there was kind of a lot of blowouts or a lot of games were a little whole lot of great games um last week you know there was kind of a lot of blowouts or a lot of games are a little lopsided or games that were just flat out boring whether that be ohio state putting on a clinic against nebraska at home on college game day or on the road and then uh wisconsin and uh northwestern which was probably the most boring game of the day uh i probably would have bet the first team to score a touchdown would win. And that ended up being the case.
Starting point is 00:16:28 But just two offenses that looked like watching paint dry, and they were actually pretty boring. But I digress. So going back to the AP Top 25, like I said, not a lot of movers, not a lot of shakers, but some games that kind of affected the landscape. Number 15, C Cal, who was behind Iowa by one spot, ended up losing at home to Arizona State on Friday night. Arizona State, like I kind of said before, went to Cal and went to Berkeley and kind of had a good, had a marquee
Starting point is 00:16:59 win. Cal looked really good. Their defense looked like one of the top in the nation. Eno Benjamin, who for those who probably know, the former Iowa commit, who decommitted, had three touchdowns, 100 yards. He came into the year as being one of the top running back prospects in the country, kind of had a down year, but definitely was able to kind of build off of his lackluster performances in the first couple weeks. And that three touchdown performance kind of shows you how and why he is considered one of the nation's top running backs. So Cal dropping down some spots.
Starting point is 00:17:32 They were at 15, and they went all the way down to out of the rankings. That's just kind of showed that how much people, either that they didn't respect Arizona State for winning. Arizona State jumped in from being kicked out of the AP Top 25 to being number 20. And Cal, I don't really agree with them falling out of the AP Top 25. Arizona State's a good team. Herb Edwards is really doing a good job with that team. But that kind of affects it a little bit.
Starting point is 00:18:01 Not a whole lot of Iowa. But if Cal did, for some reason, convincingly beat Arizona State, they had a little bit of an argument whether to jump us or not. So that kind of left us in good hands with that. Kind of going along the landscape as well, Virginia was able to not pull out a win against Notre Dame on their road at South Bend. Virginia jumped on, I think, five spots from that. So they were kind of also hovering around us. They were at the 18 level. And I'm assuming if they were to beat a number 10 Notre Dame, they would get pretty close to us.
Starting point is 00:18:36 They could have moved us, could have bumped us down, could have been right on our coattails. But luckily, we have nothing to worry about with that. Notre Dame was able to secure the win. we have nothing to worry about that Notre Dame was able to secure the win and they do stay um atop the top 10 of the AP rankings and then kind of other another other games looking through the landscape I think the last game to talk about would be USC Washington uh Washington number 17 USC number 21 like I said Iowa kind of went into the week where unless they beat Middle Tennessee by like 60 points they didn't really have a whole lot of reason to move up if the teams in front of them weren't losing which seemed to be the case so we didn't we kind of had a little bit of risk of kind of getting uh leapfrogged from behind us but uh washington number 17 washington was able to hold off usc by
Starting point is 00:19:19 two touchdowns and usc um if they did somehow beat was Washington had a little bit of a case to jump us but they didn't luckily so I mean kind of being from the casual football fan from this weekend not a whole lot of upsets kind of happened this weekend besides Arizona State the top 10 pretty much stayed the same I mean Michigan for the Big Ten looked like they kind of found their confidence but hey you could put a Little League team out there, a high school team against Rutgers, and they get their confidence back. I think that it kind of stinks that they're going to the Iowa game with all this momentum, but also we came in momentum.
Starting point is 00:19:55 We did have a lot of momentum following that 45-point win as well. So I think that in the AP Top 25, not a whole lot of shifting, like I said. The Big Ten games were pretty much boring for the most part, besides that Minnesota-Purdue game, but that's kind of the battle of the who-care games. If you happen to be cooking out or at the bar, that game was probably on. You probably weren't paying a whole lot of attention to it. So nothing too exciting there.
Starting point is 00:20:19 But that's going to kind of wrap it up for this episode. Thank you guys for sticking with me.
