Starting point is 00:00:01 A tough night in Madison as the Iowa defense springs another leak in the Hawkeyes fall at Wisconsin. But flip the script in Iowa City, the women deliver a statement win over number six Michigan at Carver Hawkeye Arena. Two teams, two different stories. You are locked on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day. Welcome in. I'm Trent Condon. and this is the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast, your daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast.
Starting point is 00:00:40 I've been covering the Hawkeyes for over 20 years on the radio here in the great state of Iowa, including currently on the Iowa Sports Radio Network, where you can hear me each weekday from noon to two. Stations all across the state, including Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, the Quad City, Sioux City, and our flagship 106.3 KX&O. Today's episode of Lockdown Hawkeyes is brought to you by Mazda. We put the same drive into every detail. wins define the moment, putting in the work that defines you.
Starting point is 00:01:09 Stay tuned for highlights in this week's moving the game forward. There's more to a Mazda because there's more to you. Well, we got a couple of bad and one good in the middle coming up today. We're going to talk about the Iowa wrestlers getting dominated once again in their final duel at the year. Another disappointing effort and a lot of head scratching going on about the future of the Iowa wrestling program. I'm one's proud, certainly not looking to be the case this season. The Iowa win, get a signature victory as they knock on Michigan, get the win against the Wolverines and do it with dominant defense out of the Hawkeye women.
Starting point is 00:01:44 But we begin today with the look at the Hawkeye men as they fall on the road against Wisconsin. Another one that leaves you scratching your head about this Iowa team and really where they are defensively. Now, great start to this game. Ball movement was crisp. And coming off the victory against Nebraska, you did wonder what the response. was going to be what we were going to see out of this Iowa team after getting that emotional victory. I do think that it did help that they had a little extra time off, played that game on Tuesday, didn't have to come back again until Sunday for this matchup. But the defense wasn't
Starting point is 00:02:17 there again. And that once again is a storyline as the Badgers were dominant. They shoot 54% from the floor, 10 of 24 from behind the three point arc, 18 to 20 at the free throw line. You forced just eight turnovers in the game and Iowa couldn't keep up. It was as simple as that. A couple of big runs in there stretch things out late in the game after I would cut it back to a couple of possessions in the second half thought maybe there was going to be another run in them but never could get over the hump. We saw Bennett Sturts do Bennett Sturts things.
Starting point is 00:02:48 He finishes with 23 points in the game, but still it was another one of those where he didn't have enough help and really overall didn't have enough help with the team on the other end of the floor. This has been a bugaboo now for this Iowa basketball team for quite a while. And outside of that game against Wisconsin, even when they were winning basketball games, during the six-game win streak, the defense has taken a major step back. Their defensive efficiency number, and every game outside of that Nebraska game has been over 100. Below 100 is good. 100 is average. They have been below that, including giving up a 108.7 rating in this one against Wisconsin.
Starting point is 00:03:27 114 against Purdue against Maryland 117. Limited team offensively Northwestern. It was 108 in that victory against the Wildcats. Washington 115, Oregon 110, USC 103. This has been a major issue for this team. They have gone backwards on that end of the floor. I know we look at the offense. We look at some of the things that happened during the course of the game.
Starting point is 00:03:49 And at a lot of times, that is the reasons that you get. Another frustrating angle is this was a game where it wasn't just Bennett Sturts having to do everything and putting it on his shoulders. Iowa got good performances. Tate Sage, how about that step back three-pointer in the corner that he had? Got to the free throw line a couple of times. Hit the three-pointer, got to the rim a couple of times. It was the good Tate Sage that we've seen at different parts during his freshman campaign. You had Alvaro full Garrison for the first time this season, I will lost a game where Alvero had double figure scoring, 11 points in this one, just one a four, though, from behind the three-point art.
Starting point is 00:04:27 And we talked about it a bunch lately, talking about hitting a freshman wall. That definitely appears to be the case right now with Cooper Koch. Cooper Koch goes 2 of 11 from the floor, 2 of 10 from the three point line. He plays all 40 minutes of this game and doesn't have a rebound. Zero on the ledger in the rebounding department for Cooper Koch. When he is your four, he's playing the power four position and he don't get a rebound. and this is not a one-time aspect for Cooper Koch. That is a big-time-ish issue.
Starting point is 00:05:00 We saw improvement, I thought out of Kail Combs, had a couple of shots, got down in the paint, did a couple of decent things, and at least wasn't a goose egg out there offensively. Still, not what you want to see out of him. Isaiah Howard is a guy that is a good defender, but it's not a plus guy offensively overall. You need his defense on the floor.
Starting point is 00:05:19 Overall, though, Iowa, the only guy that played in the game that had a positive plus minus. was Kill Combs. He was a plus three in his 25 minutes on the floor. A big part of that was early on when Iowa jumped out to the early lead. A lot of frustrations here, a lot of opportunity that you look at and say, how is this thing going to get better? The way Iowa plays 71 points, a lot of times should be good enough to win basketball games, but not when the defense is as bad as it is. And now it sets up a week that is becomes must win. Iowa has to go 2 and 0 this week to feel good about being solidly, in the NCAA tournament going in and going into the Big Ten tournament with what awaits them in the final two games of the regular season. At home against Michigan. Michigan team, that is an absolute wagon. And yes, they got beat by Duke over the weekend in Washington, D.C.
Starting point is 00:06:11 Still, this is an incredible Michigan team. You talk about bad matchups, that is definitely the case. That is a bad matchup. And, of course, finishing off the regular season then with the return trip to Nebraska. And we know the Huskers are going to be waiting. You go 2 and 0 this week. Everything is fine. They're going to be a tournament team.
Starting point is 00:06:27 They're going to be solidly. And I think we also have to realize this squad. There are limitations. And during the winning streak, we got excited, how high up the seed list. Can this Iowa team go? Can they get up to a five or six seed of the NCAA tournament? They kind of are what they are. Bennett Sturts can drag this team to an NCAA tournament.
Starting point is 00:06:46 Bennett Sturtz can help bring this squad in and maybe win a game in the tournament, but they're not good enough against the top level. And now you look at their 1 and 6 record against the top of the league. It definitely shows that that they are a cut below. And you can argue the merits of that middle tier, the Indiana's, the UCLA's of the world, kind of where Iowa sits amongst that group. But what we do know is that top level, I was not there. And for the most part in those games against those top level teams, again,
Starting point is 00:07:15 outside of the 57-52 win against Nebraska, there just isn't enough. we talk about the defense of this Iowa basketball team and the defensive issues that have come up. It was a big time way. And it's been the straight line drivers that have given Iowa the most issues. They played one of the best in the Big Ten in Nick Boyd from Wisconsin. And he got whatever he want. He got to the line. He almost had a triple double. He finishes the game just dominant overall.
Starting point is 00:07:41 Him along with John Blackwell, who didn't play very well in this game. It was a poor matchup. All right. Nick Boyd's going to do his thing, right? Iowa doesn't have a rim protector. That's going to be a problem, certainly against a guy like that. The problem coupled with Boyd controlling this game really start to finish, but you also throw into the mix what they did from behind the arc.
Starting point is 00:08:02 And when Austin Rapp knocks down four three-pointers. And he got Nolan winner. That hits a couple and goes two for three. I mean, those guys combined to go six of eight from the three-point line. That's a game right there. In a 13-point game, those guys shoot more in the lines of 33%, something like that. that, yeah, you're hanging around it. You got a chance going into the under four timeout and have an opportunity, but it goes back again to Iowa's inability to beat these guys getting to the basket. And here's
Starting point is 00:08:28 bad news coming up in the game in the middle of the week this week against Ohio State. Bruce Thornton might be the best in the big 10. That guy is an absolute bear. Now, he doesn't have a ton around him with that Buckeye squad, but matchup wise, that is a huge, huge concern for this team. Frustrating loss, opportunities early on. You played well often. They share the ball, but then they got stagnant again. We saw so much of that again in this basketball game. Too many long stretches, standing around, waiting for Bennett Sturts to be able to step up and make the plays. There just wasn't enough of it overall.
Starting point is 00:09:02 84-71, the final Iowa falls to Wisconsin. And now, as mentioned, the big week in front of Iowa as they face off. Iowa now three and seven in Quad 1 games and some moving pieces here. Potentially that lost to Wisconsin might not be. be a quad one game anymore because they're 73rd currently in the net. If they fall to over 75, 76 or worse, that's going to become a quad two game. That would give Iowa a quad two loss. Something they currently don't have, might say that sounds great.
Starting point is 00:09:33 No, it's not because now they have a loss that's a quad three loss. That Maryland game that they lost on the road, that is now a quad three loss as they have fallen all the way down. and they now sit currently at 143 in the net rankings, meaning that is a quad three loss. You go from one ugly loss at quad two. Now it's a quad three. That is a problem.
Starting point is 00:09:55 The old miss wind that they had way back in California back in November, that is on its potentially falling out of a quad two victory for Iowa and turning into a quad three one. They have to be in the top 100. They're currently 91st in the country there. So as always, moving parts here as we look at the NCAA resume, will dive on this week. Well, it wasn't all negative in the world of the Hawkeyes.
Starting point is 00:10:20 No, there was some positive that actually happened, and it happened at Carver. Early Sunday as Iowa gets a win against six-ranked Michigan. Talk about defense. Hookeye women brought it on the defensive end of the floor. It was senior day, and what a way to honor those seniors, both the ones that were playing and the ones that were injured. We'll talk about the women and the big win next.

Starting point is 00:12:15 Thanks for being with us and making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first list. every day, your daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast. As we continue, let's jump over to the women, getting it done against Michigan, 62-44 against the Wolverines. This was the Michigan team, right number six in the country coming in, and Iowa just absolutely befuddled them throughout the course of this one. The defense played in an incredibly elite a level. We saw them all over the floor, great connectiveness, and that is something that has changed after Iowa had that three-game losing streak. you definitely saw this squad. What they did against Olson, I thought the defense was tremendous on her.
Starting point is 00:12:53 Swords the same thing really made it difficult for them to get much of anything. And right when Michigan was making a little bit of run there in the third quarter, they had a response. I think what we learned, certainly, you don't want to make Ava Hayden mad. Ava Hayden in this game, early on, there were some struggles, moving a little bit too fast, maybe, trying to do a little bit too much. She was just out of sorts in the first part of the ball game. But there was a play in the third quarter.
Starting point is 00:13:20 And it just got her going. She got knocked around a little bit. She came back. And then afterwards, she was absolutely cooking inside. A dominating performance, 24 points, 10 rebounds for Ava Hayden, definitely the player of the game and one that was an eye opener in this one. In a night day, that chit chat right didn't have it from behind the arc. Talked about her so much throughout the course of the season.
Starting point is 00:13:43 one of the top three-point shooters in the country. She's 0 of 5 in the ball game from behind the arc, just 2 and 9 overall. Did have a couple important buckets in the two made field goals that she had. How about Hannah Stulke on senior day? What she was able to do with a double-double, 11 points, 12 rebounds, a couple of great passes from Taylor Stremlo. And it was great, too, to see Taylor Stremlo.
Starting point is 00:14:06 In a game where she didn't shoot the ball nearly as well she has in the past, just two of eight from the floor still. She was able to impact the way of the game. A couple of different times, both with what she did passing the ball. She's always so good at that. And sometimes it tries to make maybe too good of plays, but that one pass to Stalky, just an absolute bullet out of her right arm. And she fired it in there to Stalky for the layup across the court,
Starting point is 00:14:31 an absolute thing of beauty on that crisscross pass. How good that looked out of Stremlow. Great to see that. Fearbach with a couple of timely three pointers, including banking one in to end the third quarter, had one early in the game too. That was incredibly important as Iowa was stretching things out. It wasn't a perfect game by any means. Iowa 18 turnovers in the game and we knew that was going to be a problem. But we play that level of defense. You're going to have a chance against most everybody.
Starting point is 00:14:58 And this Michigan team, they didn't look like it on Sunday, did they? This did not look like a top 10 team. The Iowa defense was certainly a reason for that. But when you go through and you look at what Michigan is done throughout the course of the season, They're now 22 and 5, but you look at their losses. They played as well against Yukon as anybody has throughout the course of this year. They lost that game back in November by three. We talked about it leading into this game, a three-point loss to UCLA, the only team this season that has pushed the Bruins.
Starting point is 00:15:29 They were able to do that against them. This is a good basketball team that I would just make look bad. And you have to love they did it on the defensive end of the floor. This was I was best defensive effort by the metrics overall. this season, even better than the 79-36 victory against Rutgers. That's how well Iowa played in this game to do it with the defense, says a lot about this squad. And when we've talked about the upside of this group, what they have overall with this squad,
Starting point is 00:15:58 why maybe they can pull an upset, knock off a team in the Sweet 16, you wouldn't anticipate they could. The reason for me is because of the upside that they have on the defensive end of the floor. Nobody for Michigan finished with an offensive. rating over 100. That is big time on that end of the floor. I would now with this victory very much wraps,
Starting point is 00:16:19 doesn't wrap up. They still have to win their final two games. Put themselves in great position. How about that for phrasing? puts themselves in a great position to take home the second seed in the Big Ten tournament. Of course, being on the opposite side of the bracket. That is going to be huge from them from UCLA. If you see the Bruins, it won't be until the championship game.
Starting point is 00:16:40 absolutely monstrous for them. Illinois comes in on Thursday, an Illinois team that is going to be coming in, and the Illinois struggle here as of late, not playing at the high level. They've won three in a row, beat the teams that they're supposed to. Wisconsin, Rutgers, and Northwestern. Again, no heavy heads amongst them. Before that, though, they had gone through a stretch where they lost four out of five games. Winnable game, Iowa projected to be a 10.5 point favorite in that one,
Starting point is 00:17:07 and then I will wrap up on the road, their final game of the, regular season as they will go to Wisconsin. Iowa projected 14 and a half point favorite on the road against the badgers. That is what is in front of them. He win in those final two games that would put Iowa at 15 and 3 in the Big 10 solidly as the number two team in the Big 10 with the tie breaker that they have against the Wolverines and on the other side of the bracket. Potentially if the seating plays out a rematch against Michigan in the semifinals of the Big Ten tournament. But we still got a lot of basketball before that to get into. We talk about resumes.
Starting point is 00:17:44 Iowa, when it came out a week ago with the NCAA selection committee and the way they put their bracket together, Iowa was the overall number 11 team at that time. Since then, they have added victories, a road win against Purdue, then the win here against Michigan. You go through and you look at this resume for the Iowa women, it competes. And maybe it felt a little bit odd why they were quite as high as 11 before these two games that we saw still the iwa resume they got seven wins against quad one they're seven and five overall in quad one games along with a six and no record against quad two that combined 13 and
Starting point is 00:18:22 five record is outstanding the quad one victories that they have are a win on the road a neutral site victory that they have against baylor that continues to look very good for them the whole wins that they have against michigan and ohio state and oregon and then you get to the other side this win against Michigan, maybe the best of the bunch that they have at this point, had that road win against Maryland as well. That's a big one. The road victory that they have against Nebraska looks really good. Nebraska sits at 29 currently in the net.
Starting point is 00:18:53 They are in great, great shape, certainly for the NCAA tournament. And perhaps now an outside path for them to get up to a number two seed. If they finish the job at minimum, get to the semifinals and maybe to the championship game of the Big Ten tournament, you have to feel really good. good about Iowa having a number two seed in the NCAA tournament and the way that pass sets up getting to the second weekend getting a shot likely against the number three seed in the sweet 16 and then we'll see how it plays out good vibes for the iwa women's basketball team one other thing mentioned the seniors in this game and definitely got to bring them up we talked about what we saw from hannah
Starting point is 00:19:30 stokey great to see her have a good performance in the finale rebouting how about the seven assists And that high, low action that they continued to employ was so good with Stalky and Hayden and some really good passes in this game, I thought, as well from Hannah Stulkey. Also against that pressure defense that Michigan employs and the full core pressure that they deploy from time to time. You really saw Hannah Stulke be important. She's not traditional press breaker by any means, but they do use her a lot. And she was really good on that front and seven assists in the game out of her. The other senior that played Kylie Fearbach, absolutely tremendous for. fear back and then of course you have the injuries with taylor became out for the season and jada jimpy
Starting point is 00:20:11 who's met so much to this team not on the floor as we've seen through the course of her career but you talk about that team building that camaraderie those things that are very difficult to quantify and measure she is that in spades and though she's been out for this season she's been really really important on that part and the honors that they got and still a very young team a cali levin how about coming in we know she's a good defender came in got a bucket too when she was in the game want to give a shout out to her for a squad that is playing a lot of sophomores, a couple of freshmen out there, Journey Houston, never scared of the moment. I thought Addy Deal had a couple of good moments in the game, both offensively,
Starting point is 00:20:47 a couple of big rebounds that she was able to secure in traffic. Love to see that out of her and build Addy Deals' confidence back up because there's going to be a moment. I'm probably going to need her at some point, maybe to win a big game. You're looking for a stretch. You're getting a breather for chit-chat or for your Baca or whatever it is. You need her in the game, and if she can impact it one way or the other, that's going to be important for this Iowa basketball team. So we started with the bad, the Iowa men falling to Wisconsin. Then we got into the good, the Iowa women and what they did against Michigan and a top 10 victory.
Starting point is 00:21:20 Now, back to the bad. That is Iowa wrestling. Woof, a pitiful performance against Oklahoma State. That comes your way next as we continue on the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast. This is Mazda's moving the game forward. For those who show there's more to the score than what's on the screen. These are the people and the players that remind us what it really takes to raise the bar. That extra work off the court.
Starting point is 00:21:48 And we're going to give a shout out here to Senior Hannah Stulke. Her performance on Sunday against Michigan, a double double, great passing on top of it, a seven assist performance out of her to go along with the double double. She is our moving the game forward presented by Mazda, Mazda player of the game. Hannah Stolke, she was there and she was exactly what Iowa needed in this one, coupled with getting honored after the game, dialing in every detail, giving that extra fire, that grit, and I never quit. That was certainly Hannah Stolke for the Hawkeyes. We put that same passion into every model. Highlights make the real.
Starting point is 00:22:27 What it took to get there makes it count. There's more to Mazda because there's more. to you. Today's episode is also brought to you by Fanduel. Starting point is 00:24:29 about this one. Overall, ugly. And it started off right away a toss-up match on paper as Dean Peterson falls five to two. But really, the most eye-opening one is what happened a match later. 133. Jacks Forrest, a guy that a lot of people thought was making his way to Iowa City. Didn't happen. Graduates early, comes in for the second semester at Oklahoma State. And that dude, it looks like a real contender as a guy that should be in high school that can win a national championship. Alas, he's down in Stillwater. And he did it with confidence. He made Drake Ayala look like a fish.
Starting point is 00:25:12 We know that's not the case. Drake Ayala has had a disappointing senior year, no doubt. But to lose like that, to lose 19 to 3, to have Forrest do whatever he wanted a bunch of different ways that he put him on his back and getting backfall, it was. It was ugly. Iowa finishes with nine takedowns in the game, and a lot of them came at 149 with Ryder Block, who got a technical fall 194, his victory the first of the night after Peterson got pinned by Vega, hug around until late, and then Vega puts him on his back and puts that one away. Another maybe toss-up match, Williams goes down. One of the transfers that Iowa brought in and has not played out well. The highlight came at 165 with Mikey Calliando, as we've seen Calliando, really big.
Starting point is 00:25:59 the highlight through most of it. Phil Kennedy got a nice win, a top 10 victory as well as he won 8 to 3. Gabe Arnold loses an overtime. Samson out there at 197. We know about that. And then no Ben Keeter heavyweight as Marty went out there and got pinned.
Starting point is 00:26:16 Ugly. 32-11 to Oklahoma State. Non-competitive in a bunch of different matches. Seeing Tom Brands, when they cut to him on the broadcast on ESPN, and you can see the frustration. And you could also see a guy that doesn't have answers right now. And now the decision by Beth gets.
Starting point is 00:26:39 You can chalk it up. I will went out in the portal. They spent money. They picked the wrong guys. They pick guys that for whatever reason have not worked. Seed in Seer Bailey, not even out there. You know what happened in 97. Absolutely head scratching.
Starting point is 00:26:55 After a great start to the season at that wait. They're banged up. They don't look good. Are they going to wrestle well at Big Tens? Probably not. And what is this team going to do at nationals? Outside of Caliando and Kennedy, who are you confident that could even get to the semifinals? Not to the finals.
Starting point is 00:27:13 Can get to the semifinals. Is there anybody else that you point to and say, oh, yeah, that guy's going to be there? No shot. That's where we are with Iowa wrestling. Now, it could be as simple as this. The big money donors for Iowa wrestling. If they don't want to make a change, it might be as simple as that. You try to run it back one more time.
Starting point is 00:27:35 You go that direction. You see what happens with one more season. You bring in the right mix. Maybe you can turn things around. We've talked so much over the last 15 years now of Penn State on what Kail Sanderson is built and what he's doing. And what he has done, obviously, national championships, the dominating fashion, the style of wrestling that they have.
Starting point is 00:27:58 even with the advantages that Penn State currently has. But I think we've just grown to accept that fact. But now you see Oklahoma State, they're having fun, and they're charged up. And David Taylor, a young guy, what he is doing, and the way that he is just breathed life into the wrestling program down in Stillwater. And it doesn't feel like there's much of that in Iowa City. This was ugly.
Starting point is 00:28:26 And this should be another. wake-up call in a season full of wake-up calls. Your long winning streaks against Iowa State and Minnesota come to an end. You're losing duels at Iowa. You're barely getting by the Michigan's of the world. You're getting dominated by Ohio
Starting point is 00:28:42 State and the national duels. You're getting embarrassed by Penn State. And then this, is it enough to change course? Is it time to change course? It looks like a tired program. It's certainly not the program we're used to for Iowa wrestling. That'll do it for today.
