Starting point is 00:00:00 Iowa hoops came out ice cold, but when it mattered most, the Hawkeyes turned up the heat. Jay Norvel has been announced as the newest running back coach. Some good news there and some good news inside that room. We'll talk about that a little bit later on and why maybe we can breathe a little bit of a sire relief, a lot of depth at that running back room, maybe some happier faces coming up in 2006. Iowa will face off against Ohio State up next in the Big Ten tournament. No longer a bubble game. We'll talk about the Iowa resume and what a win against the Buckeyes can do for Iowa, coupled with what would happen in the next round with Michigan awaiting the winner of that one. But we begin with what we saw today.
Starting point is 00:01:44 Iowa gets the win against Maryland as they win at 75, 64 over the Terrapins. The team that Iowa had lost to just a couple of weeks ago and in that game, it was a lot of issues defensively. It was a team in Maryland that is not an elite offense by any means. their strengths getting to the free throw line in this one. They still got there 21 times. Iowa, though, on their own, also got there 20 times, so not a huge advantage. But when we go back to that game and what we talked to previewing the matchup against Maryland was the inability that Iowa had to stopping drives to the lane.
Starting point is 00:02:17 And they were much better in that aspect. You saw some different changes of what they did. Bennett Sturts, I thought, was good on the defensive end of the floor, even in a day where he wasn't at an elite level offensively. I think we saw a whole lot out of that. But as the game starts up, it's back and forth early on, kind of letting them hang around, had a lot of looks at the rim early in the ball game. Tavion Banks had one.
Starting point is 00:02:39 Man, wow, man, yow had one stickback that he wasn't able to get in there. And it just looked very lethargic. After the game, Ben McCollum, the Hawkeye head coach, he had mentioned that these slow starts are just becoming the norm with this group. And he doesn't have a reason for it. You know, there's nothing that he can do. He said he yelled at him a couple of times in the media time. outs and that's what I guess potentially turn things around.
Starting point is 00:03:02 But regardless of that, you can't afford a cold start. And we're going to talk about the Ohio State matchup coming up as that will tip off at 11 a.m. Central time on Thursday morning. But when you go through and these slow starts that continue, even go back to the Ohio State game the first time, they're down 14-2 in that one before they caught fire. Iowa down 21 to 10. And this was going to be an ugly loss. If I will loss this one, this is going to be another one of those negative marks on their
Starting point is 00:03:28 NCAA tournament resume. The good news, there's 40 minutes of basketball, and Iowa was able to find a way. They clawed back into the game, and it was, I thought, on the defensive end, saw some switches. They made things incredibly difficult on Mills, held him to one of 13 shooting,
Starting point is 00:03:43 one of five from behind the arc. Chase Saunders off the three-point line, that was a change from what they did defensively the first time and getting him isolated and getting some clean open looks. They took that angle away. Coit never really could get going. Iowa did a good job of him.
Starting point is 00:03:58 And Mills and Coy, the two guys that really hurt them going downhill in that first, a second matchup of the year and the one out against Maryland on the road. Those guys getting downhill, they combine for nine turnovers in the game. A lot of credit to the Iowa defense and what they were able to do. On the offensive end, mentioned Bennett Sturts did not have an elite game by any ways. Six of 18 from the floor, two of nine from behind the arc. Had a couple of ugly ones in there also. Maybe one of the two that he made was the most difficult. that he had of the night. He just was not his normal self shooting the basketball, but he was
Starting point is 00:04:35 able to do other things. Eight assists in the game. That's a high water mark from what we've seen out of him recently distributing the ball. And a big part of that is the play of Cooper Koch. And you know, we've been waiting for Cooper for the light ball to come back on for him once again this season. You look at the shot. You look at the mechanics of it. It's always been good. It's always been not an issue that you can point to. It's a beautiful looking stroke. You can see why coming out of high school, he was considered, certainly for kind of that stretch, big guy, you know, a bigger player out there. He was considered one of the best shooters for guys, say, six foot seven or taller. That's what he was considered coming out.
Starting point is 00:05:10 And we see that come up once again. A couple other notes that I want to get into here on the offensive end of the floor. The only player that was not above average, 100 rating in offensive rating in the game was Kill Combs. We know he was expending, though, a lot of energy on the defensive end of the floor. loved what we saw from Isaiah Howard again coming in off the bench, knocked down all three of his shots, hit a three-pointer in the game. He was distributed. I think his defense also, after that slow start for Iowa,
Starting point is 00:05:39 was a big part of them coming back and what they were able to get out of him. And they condensed the lineup down, just three minutes for Tate Sage in the ball game. It was really a seven-man rotation. Alvaro Fulgaris came off the bench. He had four points for the Hawkeyes, knocked out a couple of free throws, had a rebound in there, and assist as a team. Iowa, 19 assists on their made field goals as they made 27 in the game. That's definitely an eye opener.
Starting point is 00:06:04 Mention the slow start and the sloppiness that we saw also out of this Iowa team. Lackadaisical, just some sloppy passing. Didn't have it. Maybe we're going to see them after getting a game underneath them in the United Center. Again, tomorrow is not going to be a pack building by any means before the heavyweights get to town before the Illinois and the Michigan's and even to a lesser degree, though Purdue, will be playing later in the day. You're not going to see a full building there at the United Center.
Starting point is 00:06:30 It's a huge building. It's a different kind of backdrop playing there, playing where the Bulls play. Maybe that matters a little bit. But the slow start, you hope that against Ohio State now with the game underneath their belt, they're going to get off to a better start in this one. Tavion Banks back in the starting lineup for the Hawkeyes after coming off the bench against Nebraska, a violation of team rules on that one. Tavion, I thought, had some good moments after an early miss that he had in the game.
Starting point is 00:06:55 just overall a solid effort coming back now cam man yow he needs to knock down those free throws just two of eight from the charity stripe and in fact uh of the misses in the game he was responsible for six of the eight misses at the free throw line trying to salt a game away can't afford that but after the early turnovers in the game i would just five turnovers in the second half i think of the what did they have six in the first half maybe five of them came like in the first 12 minutes of the first half. So just overall, not a pretty performance in the first half, came back, made it a game, had some opportunities, and then, of course, the big run. The 21-0-0-0 run, or Cooper Koch caught fire, a little bit of everybody that was getting involved. Great to see out of this Iowa
Starting point is 00:07:37 team. You take care of business, you don't ugly it up by any means. So when we come back here, Locked on Hawkeyes, we're going to take a look at Iowa's NCAA resume, and we're going to preview the matchup against Ohio State. A matchup that's going to look a lot different for Iowa compared to what happened when they played just a few weeks ago at Carver Hawkeye Arena. We'll talk about that. Why this Buckeye team is different in Ohio State playing some good basketball. As we continue, Lockdown Hawkeyes. I'm Clea Butler, host of Lockdown Women's Basketball.
Starting point is 00:08:10 And this is Mazda's Women's Basketball Snapshot, celebrating the work no highlight reel can ever capture. Texas won its first ever SEC championship on Sunday, beating South Carolina 78 to 61, and snapping the game cost three-year, run as SEC tournament champions. In the Big Ten championship, UCLA dominated Iowa 96 to 45. The 51 point margin is the most lopsided title game in Big Ten tournament history. With a resume that includes 18 quad one wins and one of the toughest schedules in the country, UCLA is making a serious push for the overall number one seed. But Yukon has held that spot all season and remains the nation's only unbursed. beaten team. These moments are earned off the clock, those long before the lights ever come on. The sweat, the fakes, the doubt, the scrapes, and coming back for more every time.
Starting point is 00:09:07 Mazda puts that same drive into every detail. Wins defined the moment, putting in the work, that defines you. There's more to a Mazda because there's more to you. The biggest stretch of college basketball season is almost here. The buzzer beaters, bracket busters and unforgettable moments that everyone's talking about the next day. Being there live for something like that, that's bucket list stuff. The hard part is actually getting tickets, long queues, prices jumping around, and surprise fees at checkout. The GameTime app gives the advantage with constant innovation.
Starting point is 00:09:42 It's how you unlock amazing tickets and experiences in just a few taps. Simple to use, the game time guarantee means 100% legitimate tickets delivered on time at the best price. And here's the best part. Fees are included in the price you see. Starting point is 00:10:07 Maybe you're going to be following the Hawkeyes in the NCAA tournament. Of course, the women are going to be hosting the first two rounds. Take a look at the tickets on the game time app. Find out where you're going to be in the arena and see just how good those tickets are. Iowa, Ohio State, matching up again for the second time here in a couple of weeks. We go back to that game in Carver Hawkeye Arena when Iowa got the victory against them 75-254. Mentioned the slow start in that game as Ohio State raced out to a 14-2 lead, but this was one of the games where we saw Alvara Fulgaris played at an incredibly high level. He was outstanding in the game, 20 points, 8 to 10 shooting, 4 or 5 from the free throw line,
Starting point is 00:12:12 had five assists also in that game to lead the Hawkeyes in that category. Bennett Sturts had 22, but we'll remember that really as the Elverill game. That's where he played certainly at his highest level. However, I do warn you this. A couple of angles. First, Ohio State was out playing without their center, Christoph Tilly. And Tilly, big guy that came in from Santa Clara, big German dude. He's got size.
Starting point is 00:12:38 He can stretch the floor a little bit, but mostly what you're going to see from him is a big body. He is not a great rim protector, but he's okay. And he's a big body. At 7-1, he's going to cause some problems for Iowa inside. They didn't have that. They were a donut team in that first matchup. They didn't have anybody inside, and Iowa continually was able to turn the corner and do a lot of good things. Another component to that is they had a couple other guys that were coming off, not playing in the previous game, including a Devin Royal, who is a good three-point shooter, can knock it down from the outside.
Starting point is 00:13:11 He is a rangey type of guy that's small forward that can get into the paint. He's got some angles to his game. He can do that, knock down the open jumper, good rebound, a really good athlete in Royal. He was coming off not playing against Michigan State that we did play against Iowa. Also, Mobley, another one of their better players, hadn't played in three consecutive games before the Iowa game. He actually did play, played well against the Hawkeyes. He had 15 points and knocked down three or four from behind the arc. An elite shooter is Mobley shooting nearly 43 percent from behind the three point line.
Starting point is 00:13:42 Those guys, I think, are going to look a little bit different. And we go back to that game plan, too, that Iowa employed in that first game. It was Cale Combs on the defensive end, keeping the ball out of Bruce Thornton's hands, face guarding him a lot of, a lot of times. And then when they got the ball to Bruce Thornton, they were hedging hard, double-teaming hard, get the ball out of his hands very quickly. I'm going to guess that Jake DeBler is going to have something up his sleeve. We're going to see something different out of this squad.
Starting point is 00:14:08 And this is an Ohio State team that's playing well down the stretch. They beat Purdue, what at Penn State? We know Iowa struggled. And they did that by 32, by the way, after the Hawkeyes lost that. game out at State College. And then they throttled Indiana to finish up the season on Saturday over the weekend. So this is going to be a team I think that's going to look much different than what we saw before. Tilly in the lineup, that's a component. Royala Mowgli now kind of hitting their stride. And Bruce Thornton, it's going to be pretty rare that you hold a guy like that down.
Starting point is 00:14:39 This is going to be a tough matchup. Now, I know it. You're saying Condon, you said that before the Buckeyes came to town and I will blew him out 74-57. I guess. Get it? I'm just telling you, this team is going to look much different than the first time the Hawkeyes faced off against them. They're playing with confidence. They're playing with swagger. They got size. They got versatility. This is going to be a difficult matchup for Iowa. And I think they're going to have to do some different things, different than what we saw the first time. Now, the good news is, and we saw this before, we saw what Iowa was able to do with a different type of game plan defensively in the game against Maryland. After getting beat a specific way, they were
Starting point is 00:15:16 able to change. And we saw how that worked in the game today against the Terrapins. Still, after the success, we'll see how that plays out. I got a freshman Biden. He's pretty good. Another big body inside. So just going to be different. It's going to be a different type of game than what we saw the first time. Let's take a look at the Hawkeyes resume now for the NCAA tournament. Now, something kind of interesting happened when you look at Iowa. Again, safely in the NCAA tournament, there's no concerns. I don't believe about that. They're going to be fine. as it pertains to be selected, likely going to be in that 8-9-seat range, something like that. We know what that means, playing a one-seat in the round of 32, unless we get a historic upset.
Starting point is 00:15:57 Oh, how great would that be? That aside, likely going to be an 8-9 game for the NCAA tournament. So Iowa currently at number 25 in the net rankings, that's where they sit here after the games are still going on, a few of them out there in college basketball here on Wednesday evening. they are ranked 25th of Bartorvik 24th. And Ken Palm, we mention it a lot. They're predictive metrics better than what you see in the result-based metrics. They're 39th in wins above bubble.
Starting point is 00:16:26 Strength of record is 38. So the predictive metrics, let's hope this is a committee that uses those more than the result-based metrics. Probably not going to be the case. And why I was likely going to be seen in that eight-nine seed range. But the interesting part of the resume and what change is what has happened, to their games against Penn State and against Maryland. So both of those teams just moved out of the top 135. You say, well, why does that matter?
Starting point is 00:16:54 Because those games against 135 ranked teams now become quad three games. 136 is Penn State's ranking. 137 is Maryland. What you're hoping for is they can jump up into the top 135. That would mean that those losses would actually turn into quad two losses wouldn't look nearly as bad on the resume. Two quad three losses, that's a pretty big negative and a pretty bad red mark against the Hawkeyes
Starting point is 00:17:19 when you stack them up against some of the resumes in the similar range. Still, going to be fine, no concerns. Even if they lose to Ohio State, they're still going to be an NCAA tournament team. We're not going to have to sweat come selection Sunday. You look through and you look at the other resumes on the bubble. You look at the amount of losses that we've seen to this point in time.
Starting point is 00:17:38 It just continues to stack up. So going into today, Iowa was, ranked at Bracket Matrix. Another website we talk about often, Bracket Matrix puts together all the Bracketologists that are out there, all of them that are public and that you can take a look at. So Iowa, when you take all those together and average them up, Iowa was the top number nine seed coming into the day. Nobody above them fell, nobody that is ranked ahead of them lost in their conference tournaments. Most of the teams, in fact, haven't played to this point. But you look at the teams that are below them. Well, one of them, TCU. One of them.
Starting point is 00:18:11 tonight in comeback fashion against Oklahoma State. You have some other squads, Ohio State, obviously, Hawaii was going to face. UCF is a 10 seed. They won NC State 1. They're a 10 seed. Missouri will get going. Santa Clara has done after losing in the WCC. Texas, SMU, VCU, Indiana.
Starting point is 00:18:29 All these squads, though Indiana lost, they can't be in the bracket anymore. Can they got to knock the Hoosiers out of there. What I'm getting at, though, is there is one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven teams still below them. that would have to pass Iowa to get to the NCAA tournament. I understand there's going to be bid thieves out there. We're going to see maybe a team for the Mountain West that's off the bubble right now that makes their way in and plays their way into the NCAA tournament and say Utah State doesn't win their conference crown.
Starting point is 00:18:57 Miami of Ohio, they fall in their conference tournament. I believe they're still going to be an NCAA tournament team with their 31 and no regular season that they're going to get a spot. I was okay. I was okay. They're not going to have to travel to Dayton. I am still confident that that is going to be the case. And look at the teams below them, they're going to be in good shape,
Starting point is 00:19:16 even if there are some bid thieves out there and some of the other conferences. That certainly happened during conference tournament week and why this is such a great time. Again, 11 o'clock with Iowa and Ohio State. We'll be back with you again tomorrow with a recap of what we see in that one. And hopefully set the scene for another matchup against Michigan. Iowa would be playing their third game in three days. Well, Michigan, they've been waiting. and we know how good that Wolverine team certainly is,
Starting point is 00:19:41 but we'll get to that, just have to find a way to get past Ohio State. We got a news item for you as well over to some Iowa Hawkeye football. Jay Norvell, we knew he was joining the Iowa football program. Look like he was going to come in as a consultant. Now he's a coach, the running back coach. Good news for the Hawkeyes. We'll talk about it as we continue.

Hawkeyes, your first listen every day, your daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast, thanks to our everydayers with us each and every day. Wrapping things up with some football talk is Jay Norvell, some reporting being done.
Starting point is 00:22:50 Jan Leisdikow, the Des Moines Register, David Eichold, a few others had the story that it is going to be Jay Norvel at the running back spot. I can tell you, are the people inside that running back room excited about this? Omar Young just was not a great fit. You come off of Liddell Betts, who recruited. all the guys, obviously a well-respected coach inside the locker room. And Omar Young was just different. He was different in the way that his personality melded with those different guys. We heard going back to obviously the practice down in Florida as they were getting ready for
Starting point is 00:23:25 the bowl game down in Tampa against Vanderbilt. We heard from Kamari Bolton. He mentioned that it was just different. And he was not alone with that thinking. Jay Norvel, another well-respected guy, a guy obviously with the Hawkeye ties going back to his playing days. You look at the successes that he has had. You look at the offenses that he helped create at different spots, mid-major spots and major conference spots. This is a good hire, and I think one that makes a ton of sense. It was probably unlikely at this point.
Starting point is 00:23:55 Jane Orvel is going to get another head coaching job, certainly at the high D1 level anytime soon. Still going to be some work that needs to be done. But getting him inside the building, getting a guy with a lot of connections that's done at a lot of different places, I think was a great coup in its own right. And now you throw him in that running back room that is incredibly. You have a returning starter coming back in Kamari Moulton. We know what a solid season. Obviously, he's been able to put together what he did two years ago in a backup role to Caleb Johnson. And now Kamari Moulton, can he find that extra gear,
Starting point is 00:24:25 a little bit more burst out of him? We saw certainly the glimpses this season with Nathan McNeil. And Nathan McNeil, as a true freshman, even in the deep running back room, he was able to, he was able to find some carries a season ago. And he just looks different running the football. He kind of glides out there, right? He has that look of a guy. Plus, he's changing over to number five. And Cedark Shaw fans, you see a running back wearing number five. That gets you excited. And we'll see that from Nathan McNeil this season. Xavier Williams, we saw the glimpses out of him, obviously, this year. And more of that power type of back. You go into the transfer portal. You bring in L.J. Phillips. And after what he did in his career in South Dakota, smaller, five foot nine in terms of
Starting point is 00:25:06 height, but not in terms of width. 225 pounds, a wrecking ball in there and a very, very productive running back at South Dakota, nearly 2,000 yards on the ground a year ago. And then he get into the young guys, too. We talked about one of them with Nathan McNeil, but Brevindal, we've talked about him a ton, obviously an elite level speed, getting him back healthy and what he can do at a bunch of different ways, I think, for this running back room. A couple of guys of red shirt of this past season.
Starting point is 00:25:32 Olante Dean, who was a defensive back, they moved him over to running back. and I know they're excited about it, the youngster out of Florida. Braden Jackson, the younger son of Fred Jackson, former NFL player from Coal College. Braden Jackson definitely saw some things out of him called a bunch of his games when he was at Ankeny Centennial. And I think he's a guy that can help out. It's a deep room and now it's a room with the coach.
Starting point is 00:25:56 I think's going to fit much better than what we saw before. That'll do it for today. Again, back with you tomorrow after Iowa, Ohio State goes final.
