Happy birthday to the Lockdown Network today, 10 years old.
Today for you, we're going to give you the top 10 Iowa Hawkeye football wins over the last
decade.
You are Locked on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day.
Hey, welcome in.
I'm Trent Condon, and this is the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast.
Thanks for making Lockdown Hawkeyes, your first listen every day, your daily on
Iowa Hawkeye podcast as we break it down today.
Well, the countdown to kickoff begins and continues as we are down to 81 days until
Iowa football will be back in front of us at Kinnick Stadium in the home opener.
We'll take a look at player number 81 and some of our favorites of the past.
Seahawk basketball has been announced the date that we will get for the
Sighawk matchup coming up this year, a much anticipated matchup with the Hawkeyes and the
Cyclones.
It was a close one a year ago in Hilton Coliseum back in Carver Hawkeye.
I will tell you about the date for that one and look forward to Iowa basketball.
But we begin today with locked on turning 10.
That's right.
The Lockdown Network,
your daily podcast network here of all your favorite teams.
We got you covered with the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL,
and over 80 college teams along with our specific channels.
Lockdown NFL,
locked on college football,
locked on college basketball,
all under the lockdown umbrella.
It all started with David Locke,
the radio broadcaster for the Utah Jazz saying,
I'm going to start a podcast because, well,
I know a lot more than other podcasters out there.
And we have continued bringing you daily content here on the lockdown network.
And we're celebrating that 10 years here today and going to be celebrating throughout
this season.
So this is the anniversary.
This is the date here on June 16th when it all launched and built into what you see
today with all the podcasts across our network and what we do.
So what I wanted to do with our first 10-year anniversary,
anniversary is a look back and a look back at the last decade of what we've seen.
And my 10 favorite Iowa football victories over these 10 years.
Now there are some forgotten seasons.
There are games that are going to fall by the wayside.
And as I was compiling this list of my top 10 victories over the last 10 years for Iowa football,
a couple of things jumped out.
There are a couple of games.
I'm like, maybe I missed on that one.
I think back to the most recent game that we saw, the win against Vanderbilt.
Talk about honorable mention, Gago Pavia, the runner,
up in the Heisman trophy. Just how well Carson Shire played early, getting pressure on him.
Iowa holding on for the victory. And finally saw that explosive offense and certainly the passing
game looked like it took that final step forward that we were hoping for with Mark Grinowski
and what he was able to do in that game. A couple other honorable mentions that didn't make the cut
for my top 10. The Cooper DeGine kick putt return game against Michigan State in Kinnick Stadium,
a game where we saw Cade McNamara go down with an injury in that one. We got our
our indoctrination into Deakin Hill, and we'll get into Deakin a little bit more later on in our
rundown of the 10 games because, yes, there's a Deakin game in there.
But that one just kind of fell by, but certainly one of a great memories and deserving of
honorable mention.
And also the other thing in my top 10 list.
And if you listen to me and you're an every day or here on the lockdown network,
you certainly know that the Iowa Nebraska rivalry, it's special.
It's fun.
And after meeting my now wife and going to Sioux City, seeing it from the western side
of the state and just how important that rivalry is.
It's definitely built for me throughout the years,
coupled with some of the online fans and that fan base.
I have Stephen M. Sipple on my radio show from time to time and talking with SIP and
needling him just a little bit.
The domination of the series is I was won 10 of the last 11 games in the matchup against
Nebraska.
And we're talking about a decade here, well, nine out of 10 during this decade run on the
lockdown network yet.
They all kind of run together.
There's been so many walkoff victories, late field goals for I.
Iowa. I was also bludgeoned them a few times, including this past season, which is always fun to rub the Huskers nose in it just a little bit. But just because they all almost glabbed together for me in one, it was hard to just choose one game, clinching an undefeated season in 2015, though that was outside of our parameters because our conversation begins in 2016. But that one definitely there. Some of those wins. Miguel Rosinos hitting the game winner that we had in that aspect. And obviously,
some of the other walkoff victories on field.
Maybe the biggest one of that was Marshall Meader
and what he was able to do,
knocking one in getting his first opportunity
on the field for the Hawkeyes
and does it by beating Nebraska.
But Caleb Johnson and Kinnick Stadium in the night game
a couple of years ago,
and the swing pass that he got out there from Shaggy
and ran the distance and outran the Nebraska defense on that play.
Just so many good ones, but again,
they just all kind of run together.
So none of them made the top 10.
Let's get into it.
Top 10 games.
let's start and we're going to go in averse order here.
Number 10 for me,
I take you back to 2003.
Iowa 15, Wisconsin 6.
I told you we were going to get a Deacon Hill game in here.
And this is obviously one of those.
Lashon Williams, he had the big play in the game,
an 82-yard touchdown run for Iowa as they jumped out and got the lead seven to six.
How about this?
Over the next six series, the next six times that Iowa had the football in the
win against the Badgers.
They went three and out each time.
In fact, they combined for a total of three yards of total offense in that one.
Sebastian Castro had an I&T late in the game.
Why A Black had a safety that proved to be a big, big difference maker there as it was
still a one-score game at 13-6.
Yet the Iowa defense was absolutely incredible that day.
I remember walking in and seeing some of the struggles of Deacon Hill, wondering if I
was going to be able to score a point, how they were.
possibly going to be able to pull the upset against Wisconsin.
Well, they did.
They did it with defense, LaShaul Williams and just enough Deacon, 15 to 6.
Iowa gets a win against the Badgers.
Number nine on my list, it was the only one from the weird COVID year.
It was the 41, 21, 21 win at State College against Penn State.
Now, of course, we know there was no white out conditions there.
It was not 110,000 people in state college for this one.
It was limited capacity, a couple under people in the stands.
McCaugh-Sargett, though, he was tough, ran hard, 101 yards in that one,
had a couple of touchdowns in the game with a big play and certainly the one that lives
in the memory of myself.
And I'm going to bet a whole lot of others is Davy on Nixon, the big man with the pick six
as he rumbled 71 yards.
More than a rumbling.
He looked pretty quick on that play as Iowa gets to the victory in dominating fashion,
41-21 as they pull away late and get the win against Penn State.
Any win against the Nittany Lions, definitely.
a good one. We continue here, our list of top 10 Iowa football wins over the last decade.
At number eight, Iowa, Penn State again just this past season. Iowa 25, Penn State 24.
It was the Mark Grinowski running show. 130 yards in the ball game, a couple of big plays,
including what proved to be the clincher late on the naked bootleg, comes out the backside of
that one, had another run earlier that set them up for the score that gave them the lead.
great running as well from Kamari Moltenney, hard-earned 99 yards on the ground in that one is Iowa.
Yes, Penn State had just fired James Franklin.
Yes, Penn State, though, a preseason top five team.
And some people's choice to be the national champion definitely did not prove to be that squad this year.
This was still a team that was very talented, that were playing very hard for their new coach.
And Iowa found a way, as they do often, just got one out and they did it in the win,
25, 24 against the netty lines.
Number seven, let's go bowling and let's go down to the Outback Bowl.
I might be asking which one.
The Mississippi State game after the 2018 season, Iowa and eight and four on the year,
faces off against eight and four Mississippi State.
There was a lot of build up to this game and there was a loudmouth Mississippi State guy
that was making jokes and talking about they're too slow.
They're too white.
We heard all the narratives that were out there.
Iowa 27, Mississippi State 22, and the big player in this one,
The MVP of the Outback Bowl was Nick Easley, 75-yard touchdown early, eight catches overall for 104 yards and two touchdowns.
Big play in this one as Jake Travace made a play in the end zone with an interception.
Iowa played very well, a couple of goal line stands and holding Mississippi State two field goals and a big difference.
And really the embodiment of Iowa football under Kirk Farrants, I think this said a ton.
Mississippi State was flagged for 90 yards of penalties.
On the other side, Iowa, no penalties in the game.
And in an incredibly close game like that, it has to be the little things,
the differences in that one and the difference for Iowa.
No penalties and they get the win.
Number six on the list, it is a run to 2019,
where the undefeated 9-0 Minnesota gophers come to town ranked eighth in the country.
They were playing incredibly well.
Iowa, on the other hand, was okay at that point.
They were six and three on the season,
yet Iowa gets it done 23 to 19.
Iowa races out early as they score on their first three possessions of the ball game.
How often do you see that?
Nate Stanley was sharp, 14 to 23, 173 yards, and two touchdowns.
Tyler Goodson with 95 yards on the ground,
including a touchdown for himself.
Big plays by Nico Ragini, Amir Smith-Marcette,
with a couple of grabs in this one.
Riley Moss had an interception.
It was another game where we learned P.J. Fleck, he can have a really nice team.
And he did that season, but not good enough to beat the Hawkeyes.
And the only time still that Phil Fleck has beat the Hawkeyes came when they were aided
by an invalid fair catch call by the officiating crew.
This was a Minnesota team that had just the week before beat a top five Penn State squad.
Tanner Morgan was outstanding.
He threw for over 350 yards in that game, but Iowa just outgotted them and got it done
in the gop for his best season of what, 50, 60 years, Iowa still finds a way to get the victory.
Number six on my list of the best 10 Iowa football victories over the last decade.
Numbers five through number one coming up next year as we relive the past year celebrating
locked on 10 year anniversary.
Stay right there.
We continue with more.
stay with us here for a moment.

We roll through here on lockdown hawkeyes and we are going through our top 10 wins of
the last decade from Iowa football.
Number five on the list, we're going back to bowling again, the 2019 holiday bowl.
It was a win against USC and many of us old timers had memories of 2002 and the 2003
orange bowl that culminated that season, the disappointment, the rough first half,
the opportunities that were left on the field, and then the way the Justin Fargus and
Carson Palmer and company ran away in the second half of that one after the opening
kickoff for C.J. Jones, see you later. Well, this holiday bowl was another return man,
also a wide receiver. And this one, also a guy that was running the football as Amir Smith
Marcette goes off for three touchdowns in three different ways. He ran for one, he received one,
and he also returned to kick off for a touchdown.
Three touchdowns in the second quarter for Amir Smith,
Marsett early in the second half.
USC started to chip away, get a little bit closer.
They got a late field goal to end the first half,
came out and scored again to begin the second.
Suddenly it was 28, 24,
and we were starting to feel a little bit nervous.
But then, well, you got AJ up inessa.
And he took Keaton Slovis and threw him to the ground.
That was game over basically at that point,
is USC could not do a whole lot after that, even with that ridiculously talented wide receiver
room that the Trojans had that season. A couple other memories from that game and not just
Amir Smith-Marset. The quarterback sneaks from Nate Stanley, running the football, pounding the
football forward. And USC, they were, they were, they were an uncle. They just were defeated physically
in that game. Final score, Iowa 49, USC 24, a dominating performance to culminate the season
for the Hawkeyes.
A couple other notes from that game as well.
If you remember that month,
that was also when both Hayden Frye and Bump Elliott
passed away during that December leading into that game.
And they did the hokey pokey after that one,
something that's been basically retired from Iowa football now,
just the singing of the fight song in the locker room after that you see
from time to time when the video comes out after victories.
But an homage back to Hayden Frye, doing the hokey pokey,
absolutely love that part of it.
something from time to time still like to do the hokey pokey.
In fact, how about this?
After the next big Iowa football win, I got to teach the kids the hokey pokey after an Iowa win.
We need to bring that back a little bit more.
Number four in our countdown, we go to Ames.
2019 game day was there with ESPN and all the pomp and circumstance for Iowa, Iowa State.
The Seahawk rivalry, Iowa found a way.
This was a game that was a long day, starting with tailgating all day, late afternoon,
kickoff at 3 o'clock. You had the weather. You had everything that went along with it.
The lightning delays that delayed the game for over six hours in total. But in the end, Iowa gets
it done 1817, the final in that one. It looked like Iowa got a fourth down stop and the game was
going to be over as Brock Purdy's pass sailed through the end zone. But quickly, Iowa State got a chance
to get the ball back. And Iowa punt bounces off. The Iowa State return man after he was knocked into by
his own player. Devante Young recovers that fumble and Iowa holds on for the 1817 win.
I believe their fifth consecutive in the series at that point.
It was a fun one because at that point, Iowa State felt like they were building once again.
It was trending in a direction where Iowa State was going to do some positive things and Iowa just pulled the football underneath them.
Oh, what a great one that is.
We are down now to our top three.
Number three on my list.
We go back to 2021.
Iowa, Penn State, it's a top five matchup in Kinnick Stadium.
For the first time since 1985, it was a top five matchup.
The third ranked Hawkeyes against the fourth ranked nitty lions.
Penn State came in riding high.
Feeling good about themselves.
Iowa knocked Sean Clifford out of the game early after they raced out to an early lead.
Taekwon Roberson came into the game for Penn State.
And that's a guy who couldn't get snaps off.
I mean, the miscommunication, the struggles, the inability for Penn State just to get snaps off
against with a young quarterback in there.
Credit to the North End Zone.
Credit to the whole crowd there.
That environment was absolutely nuts in one of the loudest games you're going to find
in Kinnick Stadium history of just how big that was.
Then when Iowa needed a play, they started with the defense.
They pinned Penn State back, a couple of plays, backed them out.
They're facing a fourth and 29.
A short punt gave Iowa the first.
the football at the 44-yard line of Penn State, a short field.
What do they do?
Well, in the past, do you think?
They're going to run the ball a couple of times.
No, they take a shot.
And credit, where credit is due, Brian Ferrence,
dialed this one up and set it up earlier as Nico Regini goes 44 yards into the end zone
on the big looping pass from Spencer Petrus.
Boy, didn't feel like that ball was hanging in the air forever before it came down to the
hands of Nico as he races in.
the first play after the stop.
Iowa takes the lead and holds on 2320.
We don't need to talk about what happened after that.
But boy, for a moment, things were feeling great for Iowa football in 2021.
And we wrap things up with our final two in our top 10 list of the best Iowa football wins over the last decade.
Number two on the list, it was a chilly one in 2016, the year of the launch of the lockdown network.
coming off a loss to Penn State, 41-14 against Penn State,
where Iowa was humiliated, looked about as bad as you're going to find
a Kirk Farrant's coach team over the last 25 years,
came in that matchup against Penn State.
Here comes Michigan.
Rank number two in the country, this team under Harbaugh,
everything was going their way.
They were not just beating people, they were bludgeoning people,
physically manhandling everybody at the point of attack.
and Iowa finds away once again.
1413, the walkoff victory for the Hawkeyes in this one.
Talk about out of nowhere wins.
This was definitely one of those.
This one was just wild, crazy, and it ends, of course, with the walkoff.
1413, 1311 was a score before the field goal for Iowa to get it done.
Iowa got down 10-0 and it looked like maybe the onslaught was going to be on after Michigan
marched right down the field, took a 10-0-0.
lead early in the second quarter.
After that, Iowa four plays and out.
But a safety changed the complexion.
A safety once again was the difference.
Jaliel Johnson gets the two on the board for the Hawkeyes and get the ball back shortly
after that and get on the board with their first offensive score.
This was a game where Akram Wadley was just absolutely incredibly.
He gets into the end zone for the Hawkeyes on a little flare play as they dumped it
out to him in space.
And he did the rest as he was absolutely.
incredible. Iowa took the lead early in the third quarter, a Iowa only 10 place, 36 yards,
just absolutely amazing after Michigan fumbles the opening kickoff. It was LaShawn Daniels was involved
there. We saw C.J. Bethard, Akram Wadley, Akron Wadley. Get on the board then with the field goal
to take the lead in this one. And suddenly at 11 to 10, could this be happening again?
Kinnick-Kerce. It's a real thing. And top five teams have gone to die in November in Kinnick Stadium.
And it played out that way once again. There was a moment, though, late in the football game where
Bethard threw an interception. You thought, you know what? Maybe it's not going to happen.
1311. But you got to give credit again to the Iowa defense. One yard run. One yard run.
Michigan actually decided to throw the football. If you remember, they're trying to go to Iowa
native, Amara Darbo, the Dowling Catholic grad,
incomplete. The punt gives it back to Iowa, a face
mass to begin that after the punt return from Desmond King
sets the wheels in motion as Iowa gets in range. And Keith Duncan,
a 33-yarder, Iowa, 14, Michigan, 13, amazing.
We wrap things up at number one and no surprise, yes,
it is the Woodshed game. Iowa 55,
Ohio State 24.
The Buckeyes came in,
ranked number six in the country in this one.
They were seven and one.
First play of the game.
Boom.
Off and running as Iowa races out to the early lead,
and they just did not slow down
throughout the course of this one.
The pick six to begin the ball game by Amani Hooker
as Iowa jumps out,
7-0.
Ohio State came right back.
It was 7-7.
And in fact, it was tied again at 10-10,
but the Iowa offense was
Humman, Nate Stanley could do no wrong in this one.
He was outstanding.
T.J. Hawkinson, Noah fan, just the whole crew up and down the field.
Looking at the final numbers, Nate Stanley goes 20 to 31 for 226 yards and five touchdown passes.
Yes, kids, an Iowa quarterback in the last decade through five touchdowns in a game in this one.
Wadley went over 100 yards rushing.
James Butler, remember that name?
He had a nice game, 74 yards on the ground.
average 7.4 yards per carry. Torin Young with a touchdown.
He averaged 9.4 per carry. Colton Rasteader had the completion.
We had all the goofiness, all the trick plays that were in there.
Hockinson and Fent, they were both great in the game.
They combined for four of those five touchdown receptions.
The other touchdown reception came for the fullback.
Drake Kulik got into the end zone in this one, just one after another.
Josh Jackson, the one-handed grab that he had on the interception.
He had three picks in the game.
mentioned Hucker with the pick six.
It was just everything went right.
And when I think back to this game,
and the one thing that I mentioned,
being in Kinnick that day,
yes, it started incredibly, right?
You got the pick six,
and that's going to set the wheels in motion.
You knew it was going to be a charged atmosphere.
We knew it's a November game in Kinnick
and how many great things have happened,
and we're excited about that.
However, there was this sound inside this stadium,
and I'll never forget the sound.
Yes, it's loud.
We know that.
it's a loud stadium.
We get it.
Hawkeye fans were charged up.
But it was throughout the course of the third quarter
and into the fourth, just this murmur.
And it was a little bit eerie
because it's a sound that I've never heard before
in Kinnick Stadium.
It was, in a way to me,
the way that I described as probably everybody
just looking at their buddy saying,
holy crap, this is happening.
How are we doing this?
It's not beating Michigan 1413.
It's not winning.
on a walk-off field goal 1310.
55, 24, up and down the field, 31 first half points, 17 more in the fourth quarter,
just dominating fashion.
I would nearly 500 yards of total offense in this game.
It was amazing.
And number one on my list, top 10 games of the last decade as we celebrate 10 years on
locked on.
So I hope basketball has an announcement.
The game has been announced of what it will be.
It's a breaking news on that front.
down to Iowa football kickoff, 81 days away. That's all coming up next. Locked on Hawkeyes.

We're waiting for this non-conference schedule to be set.
So the game again will be played on a Thursday.
We know it always leads into finals week, and they like to play that on Thursday,
get that set, had the weekend off before finals for all the student athletes
and something that they've employed certainly over the last, what, 15 years now,
maybe even longer that for the Sighawk mashup.
This comes from Rocco Miller, who works for Field of 68,
along with Bracketeer.org, is where you can find them.
The Iowa Corn SciHawk series will be held on Thursday,
December 10th in Iowa City for multiple sources,
the 80th all-time meeting between the Cyclones and Iowa on the hardwood,
that from Rocco Miller.
So we can usually map it out pretty well,
but now it's official.
It comes from a report from Rocco.
Appreciate that as we will get,
sighawk basketball. And after, you know, what Iowa did a year ago in Hilton,
I think open a lot of people's eyes about this Iowa basketball team and what it could be
a season ago, even in a losing effort, the way they played in that one. Well, now let's get the
win. And Iowa State has started to take a little bit of control of this series. Let's go back
the other way and get what's right in the world and get the victory there, both on the football
field and the hardwood of this season. Finally, countdown to kick off. We are down now to 81 days away
from Iowa football.
Now, in a way,
can feel like it's a long ways away.
Others are on the corner.
We're getting closer and closer.
So number 81 on the roster is a big one.
And it is a huge one with DJ Venami.
Venami 6-4-240 pounds.
We saw late in the season against Nebraska,
against Vanderbilt, just what this guy is going to be.
And, you know, something interesting also to file away
when you talk about Venami is the opportunity, though he is just listed as a sophomore,
he's a redshirt sophomore.
With Iowa's pipeline to the NFL at the tight end position, the way that every evaluator
of talent in the NFL from a scout to a GM and everybody in between certainly knows
what Iowa football players and Iowa tight end specifically what they're going to get at the next
level.
If he has the kind of season that I believe he's training towards this year, if Iowa figures
out the quarterback, regardless of it's Hank
Brown or Jeremy Hecklensky,
DJ Venami has a chance
to have a huge, huge season.
With Benami, the size, the speed,
the big playability that we saw,
he could be another guy.
Not just that is going to have a great career at Iowa,
but might be another one that is departing early.
And that's another interesting part that we look at
coming up this year.
We've talked a lot about the lack of commitments
and Iowa's not going to have a big recruiting class
because they just have 10 scholarship seniors
on the roster currently going into the season.
But there's going to be a lot of guys that are going to have choices.
But I'm definitely going to be one of those guys.
You go to offensive line and Trevor Lout, another one that you definitely has to say
is going to have a decision to depart early.
Zach Lutmer, another one I think that's going to have that choice.
And they might not be alone.
So though that number is very low right now, doesn't mean there's not going to be other
roster spots that are going to open up for Iowa football.
That'll do it for today.
