Starting point is 00:00:00 The minutes distribution for Ben McCullum's second Iowa team is intriguing. Every minute will be earned. Every role will matter. And today's breakdown reveals exactly how this Hawkeye roster all fits together. You are Locked on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Starting point is 00:00:36 We got some news from the baseball front. We talked a little bit about the Harris situation, Ole Miss and Iowa and the convergence that happens there. We're going to take a look at the Iowa roster on the baseball side of things after the MLB draft wrapped up and get you a breakdown of that and how Rick Heller's squad is going to look next season. Got three big thoughts for you on Iowa football. A couple of things that have just been lingering around in my mind.

Starting point is 00:01:00 I want to get into talk a little bit about that defensive line and the roster construction going forward. But we begin today's conversation, speaking of roster construction, taking a look at how the minutes are going to play out for this upcoming Iowa basketball season. After an incredible year number one for Ben McCullum, reaching a Sweet 16 for the first time since 1999 and Elite 8 for the first time since 1987, the expectations definitely have ratcheted up for Iowa basketball and what the expectation level is going to be for Iowa basketball fans going into next season. And though you lose your top three leading scores from a year ago, you have a first rounder in Bennett Sturtz that has moved on. And he'll be playing his basketball with Oklahoma City Thunder next season. You have Alvaryl Fulgaris who moves on over to Louisville where he'll finish up his collegiate career. And, of course, Tavian Banks, the likelihood he will not have that fifth year of eligibility.

Starting point is 00:01:54 So your top three leading scores are departing. You couple that with a transfer portal hall that isn't immense. It's not going to be on anybody. top 25 or probably even top 50 list nationally, but two guys that we've talked about a ton here, the way that they're going to fit in with Andrew McKeever coming in at 7 foot three from St. Mary's, how he fits into the system, the style that Ben McCollum goes along with Tyree Coleman.

Starting point is 00:02:18 And one thing that we've talked about a bunch is how I think the starting lineup is going to shake out and seeing more and more people that are starting to side with the way that I see things. With Cam Maniow at the power forward position, McKeever at the center. you move Cooper catch to the three, the small forward position, Tate Sage has your starter at the two guard, and then your point guard is Kale Combs. And I still believe that's what we're going to see ultimately play out, but there is a lot of work to be done. And as we know, with Ben McCullum's squads, they do not take shortcuts.

Starting point is 00:02:48 There is going to be the work that is going to be put in during this off season. We got a long time before we get into October and, of course, November, when things start up for real. But I want to take a different look, not just who the starters are going to be for this squad. but really how you distribute these minutes. And that's where it becomes, I think, incredibly difficult for this squad and the way that it plays out this year because I don't think you're going to see your starters.

Starting point is 00:03:12 I'll go out there and it's going to be 32 plus minutes from the starters. I don't believe that's going to be the case at all. I think you're going to see things much differently. And you couple it with a back court that certainly isn't deep at this point, is not a depth piece that they have. And what that means kind of going forward? And what does that mean for a guy like Tyree Coleman? and what he's going to do this season.

Starting point is 00:03:33 How much is Kail Combs going to have to play this upcoming season? Is it an instance where you've got to have him out there, the 32, 34 minutes a game and maybe even pushing up towards Bennett Sturt's territory where he's playing almost 40 minutes a game? I don't think that's going to be the case, but at least something you have to think about because of the lack of depth that they have in the back court. So going through here, this is the way that I spit it out.

Starting point is 00:03:57 Of course, in the regulation basketball game at the collegiate level, you have 200 minutes available for your guys. 200 minutes and I divvied it up in this fashion. So ultimately, I ended up with 11 guys that I guess we'll consider this rotation pieces. And I don't think it's going to be a rotation that we're going to see that throughout the course of the year, every single game, 11 guys are going to be playing. We know Ben McCullum definitely wants to have a shorter bench than that. I don't think that's going to be a case that it's going to be out there. So out of the starters, the five guys that I mentioned there in the starting lineup, I put down,

Starting point is 00:04:30 at the top. Andrew McKeever, 23 minutes per game. Maybe seems a little bit low. Got to stay out of foul trouble. That's a big piece of it. Also playing a different kind of style here coming in from St. Mary's and Coach Bennett, what a great job he did throughout his career before he departs and is going to finish up his career down in Arizona. But you know, with McKeever, you look at this guy, the way that he plays, what they're going to expect. But the other element is just they got a lot of big guys. They have a lot of pieces there. And if they want to go small, do you have a traditional five on the floor? Man Yao, of course, he roamed that position.

Starting point is 00:05:06 So 23 minutes is what I ended up with McKeever this season. K.Manyahu has as a starter, as mentioned, but I only have him at 18 minutes a game. It's about what he played a year ago. Similar kind of role for him. I think a part of that's also going to be the development of Trivon, Yorak, but also all those power forward types that they also have this year from Trey Thompson. Now we heard so many good things about him last season. He redshirted a year ago.

Starting point is 00:05:32 He's got four years of eligibility still in front of him. Even with the five for five rule, he's got four years to go. Ethan Harris, who sounds like he played incredibly well and watching some of the highlights over at the open practice last week, you definitely see why there's a lot of excitement out of Ethan Harris, a guy out of Washington State that said no to Washington, said no to Gonzaga, and is going to be playing for the Iowa Hawkeyes. You throw those guys into the mix, those two at the power forward position. Mention Trevin Yorak also. So that's why I have the minutes lower for a starter and Cam Maniow.

Starting point is 00:06:05 Cooper catch, put him at 28 minutes a game. And with Cooper, if it is going to be a guy, if they do go with that big lineup, where he is the small forward in a traditional lineup, if you will, in that spot. Is there going to be more to his game? More elements that he can add, more things that he's going to be able to do outside of being a very good spot-up shooter from the corner. We saw that certainly a year ago, but more versatility out of his game this season. for Cooper Koch. I think of this guy what he did a year ago. I mean, just the jump that he made on the defensive end of the floor from what we saw in the little glimpse we got during his

Starting point is 00:06:39 freshman campaign that ended because of injury. But then you saw him even at the beginning of the season compared to what he was at the end on the defensive end of the floor. That guy made a huge, huge leap forward there. And I think there's going to be a leap forward from him on the offensive end of the floor this season. Tate Sage, you guys know. If you're an everyday listener, here of Lockdown Hawkeyes. You know my thoughts on Tate Sage and just how good he has a chance to be this year. He is my pick to be the leading score for the Iowa basketball team this season. I have him at 28 minutes a game and I think I might be a little bit low. I think I might have that number a little bit lower. And then finally I put Kail Komes down for 30 minutes a game

Starting point is 00:07:19 at the point card position because I think Kail Kohlms can play in the back court together with Tyree Coleman. I think both those guys will play together. You can play them both on the point, playing both off the ball as we saw a season go with Kill Combs, the defensive intensity for Combs, now running the ship, being more consistent on the offensive end. These are things that need to develop out of Kill Combs, 30 minutes a game. So we get to the bench. And after this, we have remaining at 127 minutes out of the starters,

Starting point is 00:07:45 meeting we have 73 minutes left to play around with. Out of those 73, I gave Tyree Coleman 16. Another one that I feel maybe is a little bit light, and it goes back to that backcourt and the lack of depth that they have there. So maybe a little bit light on that front. I put 16 minutes down for Ethan Harris. And I hate to be overwhelmed by one performance,

Starting point is 00:08:05 though it's not one performance. It's what we've heard about Ethan Harris before. But the true freshman coming in, I think he's going to find a big role with this squad this season. And that's what makes it difficult with Trey Thompson. Because if it's 16 for him, I had 14 for Thompson. There's a part of me that maybe feels that's a little bit light with this team. And the structure and the roster,

Starting point is 00:08:24 the way that it's currently constructed, makes that a little bit more difficult. Also had 14 minutes a game for Isaiah Howard. And Isaiah Howard's a guy that started for them a little bit last season. We know what he is on the defensive end. Has to be more consistent as a three-point shooter, though he could knock it down from time to time, was not consistent enough there.

Starting point is 00:08:42 Got a little trouble at times on the offensive end, going a little bit too fast. You saw that out of Isaiah Howard. We know on the defensive end, though, how important he is. I put him down for 14 minutes. Trevine Iraq, another guy that we continue to hear throughout the off season is putting in the work and the development is definitely getting there. Yurok I put down at eight minutes a game yet another one.

Starting point is 00:09:03 I feel like maybe I'm a little bit light. And finally I put one more guy, I guess, in the normal rotation, if you will. I put Jaden Kuhn down. I had five minutes left. All right, five minutes for Jaden Kuh. An incredible athlete, a guy that needs to be more consistent himself with the three-point shot. But boy, with that skill set that he has, the athleticism, what he can be on the defensive end, really excited about his future.

Starting point is 00:09:26 It's a difficult exercise, something that is a little bit fun to go through here during the off season, though, and figuring out exactly how this is going to look like for Iowa basketball coming up. Well, we go from Iowa basketball over to Iowa football. And I got three or four thoughts that have just been rattling around in my mind, some things, listening to different podcasts, listening to interviews, and just talking to some different people about this team. What to talk about the defensive line?

Starting point is 00:09:50 As I mentioned, defensive tackle has been my biggest concern for this Iowa football team. Got some thoughts on that. And also, we talked about roster construction and the way things minutes-wise are going to go for Iowa basketball. Well, I want to jump into looking forward, looking towards the future,

Starting point is 00:10:05 and specifically at 2007. A very small senior class is going to be graduating this year. A lot of guys that are going to have decisions after this season if they're going to depart for the NFL. But just some thoughts on that. The roster structure and how things are going to look like going into what could be a very special 2027 season. We'll talk about that as we continue

Shifting our attention over to some football conversation. And some things that I think I've touched on from time to time, some different thoughts that are going around, but it is the offseason.

Starting point is 00:12:50 And as we get ready for Big Ten football media days, a couple of weeks away, Iowa Football Media Day after that, at that point, we'll have a couple of weeks of camp that have already been happening. and we'll start to solidify and hear some things as things shake out for this football season. But a couple of things. And the number one thing that I've talked about, defensive tackle, my biggest concern with this squad, is listening to Jay Neiman, I talked a couple weeks ago on a podcast,

Starting point is 00:13:16 and hearing Coach Neiman talk about that defensive line. Now, I know, they're Iowa coaches, right? And they're all definitely under the tutelage of Kirk Ferris, not going to be guys that are going to be all concerned, all, scared about what is happening and, oh, we're going to be really young. That's not the case. But there wasn't an air of confidence with Neiman, what he was talking about, the defensive line as a whole, and what they're going to be able to do.

Starting point is 00:13:42 He's the assistant on the defensive line, along with Kelvin Bell, both those guys working together with the D line. The defensive line is incredibly inexperienced. And outside of Kenneth Merriweather, there just aren't a whole lot of guys that have a whole lot of snaps during their careers, certainly in an Iowa Hawkeye uniform. But what we continue to hear about Braun coming in from Elon and what he's going to be able to do this year. Yosea Pinesse, who got us feet wet last year, you're definitely excited about his upside and his future. Specifically a defensive tackle, though.

Starting point is 00:14:13 More and more, I want to talk myself into they'll be fine. They're going to be okay. My old buddy John Bonacamp over with the Associated Press, he always says that when he's talking about his Dodgers. They'll be fine. And I think they'll be fine. Is it going to be elite? Is the defensive tackle position going to be a spot that suddenly I was going to roll out there. They're going to have a couple of all big 10 guys.

Starting point is 00:14:35 I don't think so. I don't think that's going to be the case. But they're going to be fine, that there's not going to be the significant drop-off that suddenly leads to this Iowa defense taking a huge step backwards this season. Is it going to be a top 10, top 15 defense in the country this season, once again, with the question marks that are there, not just a defensive tackle, but just overall. I can see a step back. I don't think they're going to be elite, but are they going to be good?

Starting point is 00:15:01 Yeah, they're going to be good because I believe in Phil Parker and Kelvin Bell and Jay Neiman and Seth Wallace and the rest of the defensive coaches. They have put together and built a sustainable model. And though the faces are going to be much different and though you have questions, there is a lot there and a lot of clay that they can mold, a lot that they can put together on this defensive line to at minimum make them okay. and if they're okay and you have a step forward offensively, Iowa football is going to be all right. Another thought. Football thought for you is we're just kind of rattling around in some of mine. The first three games of the year, Northern Illinois to open things up,

Starting point is 00:15:41 Iowa stayed at home after that, and then you and I. Northern Illinois is transitioning. They're making the move to the mountain west. And when you think of DeKalb, Illinois, I know we all think of mountains, but they're transitioning. And they're going to have to change. and going from the Mac up to the Mountain West and probably going to have to recruit

Starting point is 00:15:58 in even another level, and it's still a weird fit, but that aside, NIU does not have real big expectations in your number one out there. A lot of people believe they're going to be the worst team or the second worst team in the Mountain West this season. This should be a cakewalk. This is one where you go out there,

Starting point is 00:16:14 you get the good vibes going and roll from there. Week two against Iowa State, and I know we've seen it before. We've seen some pitiful, just awful Iowa state teams upset Iowa. And I know that lingers, the mind of many, myself included. But this should be ugly.

Starting point is 00:16:30 And regardless of what Jimmy Rogers was selling at Big 12 football media days a week ago, this team has a lot of question marks this season. Though Iowa has their own question marks, and maybe more question marks than we're used to for an Iowa football, this should be domination. This should be what we saw the first couple of years of Matt Campbell, where Iowa just sticks their nose in it and absolutely pummels them. But no holding back.

Starting point is 00:16:55 Just go out there and dominate the football game in the way that you should against a completely new Iowa State team. And then you and I, this is not the U and I of the past. This program is not at the same level. The finances have completely changed at the FCS level. And because of that, you and I has not been able to compete with the Dakotas, the four Dakota schools really. And just overall, we saw Illinois State make a run to a national championship game or a moment away. from winning a national championship a year ago.

Starting point is 00:17:25 And you and I is not in that realm anymore. And the years and years from the Gateway Football Conference into the Missouri Valley, they were a power. But that has not been the case. Certainly over the last five years and really the last 10, how the equation has changed for that football program. These three games need to be more than working out the kinks, getting our feet underneath them, figuring out what we have.

Starting point is 00:17:47 No, it needs to be more. Because you need to use these three games to defy any questions. that you have. It needs to be, we're going out here, we are dominating in these three football games, and then we're ready for that gauntlet at the beginning of the Big Ten. I don't have to remind you how difficult the Big Ten slate is to begin things for Iowa. You go on the road to Michigan, you're home for maybe the best team in the country in Ohio State, and then on the road after that, on a short week against Washington. Oh, by the way, you get a buy after that gauntlet. you have to go on the road up to Minnesota

Starting point is 00:18:23 and take on a decent Minnesota squad this year. That's what the opening four look like for Iowa football. And when we speak specifically about the opening three, you have to find a way to win at least one of those games. I think the Michigan game is the most winnable to three. You can argue that Michigan, Washington, same kind of boat, maybe Michigan to tip better. But still, that aside, get Michigan early.

Starting point is 00:18:48 Bryce Underwood, they're trying to figure him out. You got the new coaching staff there with Cal Whittingham coming in. That is the time, and I think the most winnable. We know about Iowa struggles on the West Coast, coupled with a short week, having to play that game on a Friday. There is a lot to point to to say that of those three, Michigan is the most winnable. And that's not saying that I think I was going to be Michigan. I think that's going to be incredibly difficult also. But that's how I see it.

Starting point is 00:19:14 You have to hit the ground running. And those first three games, the non-conference games, Northern Illinois, Iowa State, you and I domination. Go out there, dominate those three football games. And then the final thought. And this is speaking of something we talked about a ton, and that is the lack of seniors on this team. We've talked about that leadership,

Starting point is 00:19:37 just so weird for Iowa football and college football in general to only have 10 scholarship seniors on your roster. But when you take it a step further, and you look at the future, Because it does have that feeling that things are ramping up for 2027. Now, the schedule in 27 is not a cakewalk. That's not what I'm making this out to be. But the ability for Iowa football next year to return so much,

Starting point is 00:20:03 if they figure out quarterback, whoever it is, Jeremy Hecklinsky or Hank Brown, you're going to return both those guys next season. And one of them, if they take the starter job, the depth of the running back room, the multi-year guys they still have left at wide receiver, the potential of having Trevor Loughke and Cade Piper back. for a final season on that offensive line.

Starting point is 00:20:22 To have Zach Lutmer, maybe back for another season or DJ Fonami back for another season. That's what you have coupled with whoever we find out to be the stars this upcoming season with this squad. That's what you have in front of you. Now, 2027, if you don't know what the schedule looks like, non-conference, you go to Iowa State next year, you have Ball State and North Dakota coming to town. Your home games in Kinnick Stadium in the Big Ten, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Minnesota, USC, and UCLA all come to Kinnick in 2007.

Starting point is 00:20:55 The road schedule, well, it ends at Nebraska. You also have to go to Wisconsin. Neither seem daunting by any means at this point. But here's the other two road games. You go to Indiana and you go to Oregon. Yeah. Those ones definitely on the heavy side of the equation. That is what they have.

Starting point is 00:21:16 But it got me thinking about this. You look at that roster. All right, they got 13 commitments for next season. You also look at what they're going to do in the portal. What anywhere between six and 12 guys, usually in the transfer portal, kind of, that's the waters that I was been swimming in recently. Guys that have multiple years of eligibility that they brought in, we talked about that decision when they went to the FCS ranks last year

Starting point is 00:21:41 in the transfer portal and bringing all these guys multi-year. It just leads me to wonder, what does the roster construction look like? and what's the portal going to look like next off season. We get through the regular season. We get into December because there's one part. If they don't have quarterback figured out, they have to go out and spend. I don't think there's any doubt about that, that they have to do that for that 2007 season.

Starting point is 00:22:05 If it's back and forth between Hank Brown and Jeremy Hacklinski, neither of those guys take the jobs and run with it. We've talked about Bessinger. We talked about some of the other guys, Sullivan, on the roster what they could be. Still, you feel like you have to go out and invest. And if that's the case, well, that's usually here. huge part of your budget and what that is also going to look like. And are there going to be one year rentals?

Starting point is 00:22:25 Are they completely moving away from that? If they look at it and say, you know, what, we do have a weak spot here? Do we go out and get one of those one year guys? Does that make sense for us? Or just the way that we're built in the developmental program that Iowa football is? Overall, it's just a thought on roster construction and how difficult and how weird this offseason might be coming up here. the class of 2007 with the 13 prospects and what that means,

Starting point is 00:22:50 are there going to be more guys that are run off or are looking for another destinations because they just don't see opportunity in minutes with the Iowa football program, just a lot there and a lot to mull around. These are just a couple of random thoughts jumping around in the mind. Wrapping things up on the other side here, lockdown Hawkeyes, the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft has concluded. Some Hawkeyes hear their names, some potential future Hawkeyes. Hawkeyes hear their names.

Starting point is 00:24:10 And great to see Gable Mitchell, hear his name called. He was the first Hawkeye off the board as he was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays. Another Hawkeye making his way with the Toronto organizations. A couple of guys already there with the Blue Jays organization. Of course, just a couple of pitches away from a World Series a year ago against the Dodgers in a great series. But Gable Mitchell got the bloodlines. His grandpa, Dan Gable, and dad, another guy that heard his name called really, really fun four-year career. Remember watching him at City High at the state baseball tournament.

Starting point is 00:24:44 Didn't think he was going to turn out to be the player he has. Wow, what a career for Gable Mitchell. A couple other names to throw out there that were drafted. The first is a guy we thought was going to be a hawk guy. That is Caleb Leavre from Heelan. throws in the mid-90s, big size. He's like 6-7. Big dude, kind of got that long frame.

Starting point is 00:25:05 I already saw the MLB comp as I was watching MLB Network, and they talked, Mizoroski was throwing out. Slow down. Mzoroski throws 104. He's sitting in the mid-90s. I mean, adding another 9 miles an hour, it's asking a lot out of a guy. But we'll see.

Starting point is 00:25:20 Lately reading a couple of Red Sox things, though, They believe that they'll have enough. They also drafted a high school pitcher in the ninth round, but they will have enough to sign both those guys over the slot value of the 10th round. And we'll see on the flavor exactly what it's going to be for him. And if he's going to make his way to Iowa City. Another guy, Sam George, who Iowa got out of the portal out of Minnesota State. He was a guy that's not going to wow you with velocity.

Starting point is 00:25:47 He is a lefty dinks and dunks and sits in the 80s and just knows how to pitch. he's a great pitcher and he has been selected by the brewers at number 581. Now he has two years of eligibility, so that will help him out now with the new 5-for-5 rule that he's going to have potentially a little bit more wiggle room and a little bit more potential that he can go back to the brewers and say, hey, I'm going to need a little bit more. But we'll see on that front of what that's going to do, kid that was a local kid over in Pleasant Valley over in the Quad Cities.

Starting point is 00:26:20 and remember also seeing him a couple years ago at the state baseball tournament. Cooper Schulte also goes number 600 to the Mets as Iowa loses their middle infield from a season to go. And then finally, a couple of names that I thought were going to go. And I'll speak specifically. So Garrett Lute, not drafted, and the other guy, Ryan Stedman. And I've seen Ryan pitch a ton here in, well, where I am in West Des Moines. and he'll be, I believe, going on Monday night as he'll be going in the sub-state semifinal against Aikini Centennial. But Stedman's a guy watching him this season compared to a year ago, just the growth that he made as a pitcher.

Starting point is 00:27:01 Now, he throws at mid-90s. I mean, he's got an arm to go along with it. But Stetman was a guy that I was out at a game at Waukee, Northwest, I believe it was, and saw a bunch of scouts there. And it's one thing when you see a couple and then talking to some people in the baseball community. It wasn't a couple of regional scouts. There were a couple of national scouts that were there. I don't know if it was about signability. If that's why he didn't go, basically he was told, here's my number.

Starting point is 00:27:26 If you're not going to hit it, I'm not going to sign. Not sure on that front. If he ends up in Iowa City and he's going to end up in Iowa City now it appears, this is really good news. I love what this guy can be, not just the live arm, but the ability and the growth that I saw out of him as a pitcher. Report back to you after watching him, hopefully go on Monday for Valley. against Ankeny Centennial. I'm going to be on the call for that one coming up on Monday night. So there's another rather kind of how things are going to look going into next season.

Starting point is 00:27:57 One thing on Lute, he's a guy that definitely swung it really well, played in a summer league, hit really well. And that also probably a third base prospect at the collegial level, but a guy that I know think they can maybe find a guy that can come in right away and swing it well out Underwood playing at the 1A level. It's a big jump up to playing the Big 10 right away. But he's a guy at minimum that's going to help him out. next season and hopefully what turns out to be a really good season for Iowa baseball next year.
