Today we're going to talk little women's basketballs.
They get ready tonight for a road trip over to Purdue to take on the boiler makers at a quick turn around as they will play again on Sunday.
Still a road tilt with something looming in the background.
We'll talk about that after the big win on Monday against Nebraska and what we expect on.
that front. Still reliving in the glory of that win against Nebraska, not the most aesthetically
pleasing win by any means, but a win as a win and so many good things coming out of that one for
Iowa men's basketball. But it is going to ratchet up in terms of difficulty coming up this weekend
as they make their way to Madison to take on the Badgers, a Wisconsin team that has had Iowa's number
coming off a loss are the Badgers, Iowa coming off the emotional win. We'll talk about the game a little
bit more. John Bowencamp will join us as well. The writer on the Associated Press on the Iowa Hawkeye
Beat will get his perspective on all things Hawkeyes, including men's women's basketball and talk to him
a little bit about Omar Young as he departs as the running back coach for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
We'll get his perspective on that. And that's where we begin today's conversation with Omar Young
for the second consecutive year, Iowa loses its running back coach. And a year ago, it certainly felt
more devastating for a multitude of different reasons.
Starting with Liddell Betts, he was one of our own.
He was there in the turnover era from the Hayden Fry era into the Kirk Farrant's era as a player.
An incredible talent was finally rewarded in his senior season as they get to a bowl game.
Liddlel was tremendous.
And you think of some of those awful offensive lines that he played with early in his career
and just how talented that guy was, went on to the NFL.
Then, of course, came back to Iowa City.
after being a high school coach after his NFL career concluded,
came back to Iowa City.
What a good job that he has done and what a running back room,
obviously that he built.
And here comes Omar Young.
After Liddell made the choice to move on to the NFL,
he's now with the Miami Dolphins spending year with the Giants,
and that is the way that league is still the opportunity to get back.
And this is not something that is a rarity.
More and more coaches are making the decision
if they have the opportunity to get back into the NFL ranks
because of the ugly side of college athletics.
And it's not just recruiting.
That's always been a part of it.
But now you're not just have the recruiting,
which is a headache in its own right,
but you're also dealing with NIL.
You're dealing with agents.
You're dealing with so many different things that you haven't in the past
as a college coach.
And that is the case, certainly when we talk about both these guys
and maybe part of the decision for both of them
to make their way back into the NFL.
As Omar Young, talk about not taking a great look on the surface,
is going to the Raiders. Now it's year number one of the staff there.
Still go to the Raiders, not known as the easiest organization to work for.
I guess, well, that'll be the correct verbiage that we'll use on that front.
Regardless, Omar Young moves on.
Now, there's a couple of names that make sense.
I know a couple of these have been bandied about on the message boards and on social media.
Probably the easiest one is Jason Manson, former Hawkeye quarterback and wide receiver,
a guy that has been inside the program now for a number of years, player development.
ran that part of the program, became an offensive staff member this past season,
and he was one of the guys that they were looking at to be the running back coach before
ultimately going with Omar Young for this season.
That would be probably the easiest.
He's already in the program.
You know, he's going to likely be around for a while because his son Julian will begin
his Iowa football career coming up this year.
See if that component, don't have to worry about potentially another one and done.
I think that is something that is easy to definitely take a look at it.
And Jason Manson would probably be the same.
simplest way to go making a change.
Now, there's this other part of it that I always get a kick out of.
And it is anytime there is a coaching opening, and it doesn't matter if it's or a head coach
or an assistant coach or a coordinator, everybody loves to bring up the old names, right?
Bring back former Hawkeyes, bring back Marv Cuck, bring back BJ Armstrong, bring back Drew
Tate.
And on and on and on.
It happens all the time.
And some of them are funny.
some of them are no chance.
Akron Wadley is not going to get a job.
DJK is not going to get a job back with the Iowa football program.
But there's others that actually do make a little bit of sense.
And there was one that's thrown out there that got my wheels turn in at least a little bit
when I normally just scoff at them and laugh.
And that was the potential of going out and bringing back former Iowa running back Albert Young.
Albert Young had spent some time with the Washington Football Organization.
He's got a company.
He's done some different things.
But I thought that one was really interesting because of just the kind of person that I have heard that Albert Young is.
Now, I met Albert once.
I think I've interviewed him once or twice, different contexts.
But I got to know some people and friends with some people that were friends with him back when he was at school at Iowa.
I had nothing but great things to say about them.
Now, if they're friendly with me, I don't know how great of a judge of character.
Don't just joking inside.
Still, they had great things to say about Albert.
And I thought that was at least interesting.
And it's something that we go back to a couple of years ago when Liddell Betts came in and the connections that he had after being a high school coach.
I think that worked incredibly well.
And he looked at the running back room that he had, but those connections that he had to the south really opened some things up.
Not only that, he was a Kansas City guy.
That's where he grew up down in Blue Springs.
And so he had a lot of connections in different areas.
And it was not just a guy that was looking to move up.
And I believe the story was that Kirk maybe even had to talk him into a little bit, even applying for the job,
because he was happy with what he was doing.
And he had, of course, money from his NFL playing days.
And that helps what he was able to do,
but found plenty of joy and enrichment of what he was doing
at the high school level down there in Florida before coming up.
We'll see what direction we go.
What Iowa goes.
We know one thing, Kirk Farrant,
this is not going to be anything that probably happens quickly
because Kirk Farrants, when it comes to coaching hires,
never goes nearly as quick as we want.
Still, a new coach coming in.
The other component to Omar Young,
I do find interesting.
As we go back, and something we'll talk about with John Bowencamp as well coming up here in just a moment,
to Bull Prep.
And they were down in Florida, and Chad Leickew was there.
Tom Kekert was down there.
And David Eicholt were down there.
And then the media availability and the question was asked to Kamari Moulton about Omar Young,
just the new coach in year at number one.
It just said, you know, the relationship.
It wasn't strained by any means.
And that wasn't the phrasing that he used.
It was just different.
He's a different personality, certainly than the first.
Liddell Betts was, I think a little bit more hands-off, a guy that probably yelled a little bit more, too,
but just didn't have that same kind of camaraderie that they had from Lidel.
Those things are going to happen.
Not all coaches are going to be in the same fashion, but I do wonder if the way that he coached.
And one other thing that I did hear about Omar Young and his coaching style, it was much different
than almost all the other coaches at the University of Iowa.
If this was something that was looked upon and said, maybe check what else is out.
there. Again, this is all speculation. No inside information or anything like that. It's just
speculating. But the fit, it felt a little bit off when we heard from Omar, hearing from
Kamari Moulton, hearing from some different players, some running backs that were coached by him
this season. He was tremendous in understanding what Tim Lester wanted out of the offense. And that
is going to be something. And he also looked at the production, the production that they got at that
running back room and keeping all these guys healthy as you go into next season with another stack
running back room. Kamari Bolton, I know we want more out of him. Good.
solid dependable. And maybe there's another gear that he can unearth this season.
We saw those glimpses out of Nathan McNeil this year. We saw the glimpses this season out of
Xavier Williams, obviously bringing in Phillips from South Dakota after rushing for nearly
2,000 yards a year ago out of the transfer portal. That stacks up that running back room to
another level. And they got young guys like Brevin Dahl and what certainly we know with the
speed component that he has of what he's going to be able to do. A very deep running back room
and important hire coming up for Kirk Farrants.
We continue Locked on Hawkeyes.
Let's relive what we saw Tuesday night against Nebraska.
An important win.
We're talking hoops, both meds and women's with John Bowen camp,
plus his thoughts on Omar Young leaving for the NFL.
That's all as we continue on the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast.

In Iowa City, as Iowa gets it done joining us right now, he is John Bowen Camp.
You'll see a story from the Associated Press, Iowa College Hoops.com as well as he joins us here today.
John, as always, appreciate your time back late night for you in Carver.
You love those 8 o'clock tip-offs, I know.
Oh, God, I love them, especially when I have to get up at 6.30 the next point.
I'm working on about five hours sleep right now.
So I'm used to it, but, you know.
Well, it's all right.
It's all right because you've got a fun, compelling game.
Now, not a beautiful game by any means, but it was a fun one.
So let's go in last night as you watched this one,
and you watch it all in fold in front of you,
there at Carver.
It was such a needed victory for Iowa.
And you hate to be hyperbolic about it, must win.
It's way too early to talk about must win.
But the importance of that game for Iowa last night,
you look at the remaining schedule,
road trip still in front of you,
got that return trip, obviously,
against Nebraska at the end of the year.
Michigan, even at home,
that is going to be incredibly difficult.
The importance of last night, John,
I don't think it can be overstated,
especially on the heels of that two-game losing streak.
Well, there was a psychological effect to that win, is you needed to get that win.
You couldn't now all of a sudden have a three-game losing streak and go to Wisconsin.
You had to get that win.
And then you had to get that win after what happened on Saturday.
So there was a lot at play, but I just thought they played a really good defensive game.
Offensively, they weren't, you know, they missed a lot of shots, but defensively, they were really good.
And I think that was what was a big part of that win last time.
defense that had taken a step back here over the last three, four weeks.
Metrically, it had taken a huge step back.
I think I saw something where in the month of February,
there were 242nd in the country going into last night in defensive efficiency.
I mean, you talk about a step back.
And I can't win that way.
And though they had won, you look through that schedule and the teams that they beat,
Rutgers, you get them at home, you slide by in that one.
Same thing with USC Northwestern.
We're not talking about the who's who of the Big Ten.
And though they won those games, there was that underlying
concerned with this squad. You think they're back connected and whatever it took to get them,
I guess, shaken back up, is the defense fixed? Yeah, and one of the things I asked, I asked in
the call him last night, is what, what worked with the defense? And he was basically like,
we just played defense because we, there wasn't anything we did with the scout. It was,
go play the defense, you know you can play. And he said, and those guys, those guys accepted
the challenge and they went out and did it. And, and so I thought, I mean, they just never,
let Nebraska, because we've seen Nebraska this year, hit a lot of three, do a lot of things like
if they never let them get in a rhythm last night. And, you know, I mean, you look at down the
stretches, what, three field goals in the last 12 minutes for Nebraska. And I know Iowa didn't
shoot the ball well in that time. So you had to play good defense last night to win that game.
And so I think it was, I think, I think Saturday was a wake up call for them in terms of,
we've got to get this right. And then I think, I think last night was.
when it all kind of came together.
One guy that is continued to struggle, that is Kale Combs.
And there was a lot of talk.
I know in the Zoom earlier this week with McCollum,
the question was asked about potentially changing up the starting lineup.
It looked like something or at least sounded like something he was considering.
Wasn't the case last night.
Combs was back out there.
He's also mentioned that he's dealing with some kind of injury at this point.
But he is such a nothing right now on the offensive end of the floor,
coupled with he got defenders out there.
We know obviously what Isaiah Howard can do on the wing.
and as a perimeter defender, how good he is in that area.
Tate Sage continues to give them at minimum solid minutes out there.
With Combs struggles, are we trending to the time that it is time, maybe to make that change?
Yeah, you know, I think he was, I think he was just a little hesitant.
He talked about that, that even during the winning streak, they talked about should be changed
and things around and that they didn't want to do it because they played well.
Yeah, it's just, it's one of those things that at this point in the year you start looking at things
and you're like, do we make a change here?
And could that make things worse?
Could that make things better?
Or do we keep it the same way and hope the guy gets out of it?
And I think maybe that's where they're at right now in the sense of let's do what we've been doing
because you don't want to make a whole lot of radical changes at this point in the year when you're on the cusp getting an NCAA tournament bit.
So I just think right now he just let's see what, let's see if these guys can get out of it.
And, you know, I mean, you know, he's not the only one.
I mean, some other guys haven't had good stuff.
Tate Sage did some good things last night,
but he's had a couple of games here lately where it's that freshman February,
you know, that sometimes teams guys run into.
And so I think you're kind of seeing that with him.
So it's just a matter if this is what we're going to roll with,
this is what we've been rolling with all year and let's see if guys can work it out.
Man, Yao, what he was able to do, a couple of important boards late in that game,
playing good defense and going up against a really skilled guy and rinked mask.
We know that that guy and a guy that took a visit to Iowa,
unfortunately for Hawkeye fans ended up in Lincoln.
He is a really talented guy out there.
And Tavion Banks, it wasn't a pretty performance offensively.
He made all his free throws, though.
10 rebounds on top of it.
Those guys, those glue type of guys, you need those performances.
And kind of at the point now, you expect it out of those guys.
You just need a couple more to step up with those two.
Yeah, and I think Cam Manuel needed that game last night
because I think he, I don't think, you know,
he was happy with his play on Saturday, none of them were.
And I think he needed, from an initial.
individual standpoint he needed that game last night. So you saw guys when you look at the box
score that all did certain things and made plays at certain times. And that's in a game like that,
that's what you need. Iowa gets a win 57, 52. Now they turn their attention to Wisconsin coming up
on Sunday. Looking ahead at that matchup, a Wisconsin team that has been wildly inconsistent this year.
Looked awful last night. Metrically, this is not a highly ranked team. In fact, I'm looking at one of the
metric sites right now. I think they're 31st.
first at Kempom, something like that for the Badgers.
They're inconsistent, but one thing that is incredibly scary,
they got two different guards that can get downhill.
Nebraska really didn't have that last night.
That's the area that's given Iowa the most problems here.
So you're going to have to be a different kind of defensive performance Sunday.
Right, but at the same time, it's just they have to give really good effort defensively.
And they have to make sure when you've got those guys, as you said, getting downhill,
you've got to stop them.
And they haven't done a good job with that.
And so I do think that is going to be a point of emphasis to in practice this week,
getting ready for the game is like, you know, we can't, we got to shore that up.
And so the defensive effort, you had Tuesday night, you've got to be at least that on Sunday
and maybe a little bit better because, again, this is the Wisconsin team.
You don't know what you're going to get.
This is the team that has some of the best wins in the Big Ten.
And that also has some losses where you just kind of like, huh?
You know, what happened there, you know.
So you don't know what you're going to get on Saturday.
they're Sunday, you just got to play good basketball.
And that's the bottom line.
And you've got to play kind of the way you did last night.
The Iowa women, as Mark Radowski said after the game,
great to see Iowa still owns Nebraska.
They won't them in Lincoln, a dominating performance.
They came out red hot at what, five of their first six, three-pointers in the first quarter,
and cruised to the victory against the Huskers.
We do.
It might take a little bit of time for them to figure out what they need to do without Taylor
McCabe.
Very winnable road game coming up tomorrow night.
as they make their way over to West Lafayette to take on Purdue,
where they're projected to be a 14 and a half point favorite in that ball game.
Is it just figuring out roles as simple as that,
that without Taylor McCabe out there,
everybody understanding what they need to do now?
Right.
And that was the thing.
I mean,
when she went out,
that was,
you know,
30 plus minutes.
You had to give somebody else.
And,
you know,
they tried with Addy deal and it just didn't work when they were out of California.
And Taylor Stremwell has been good for her two years in Iowa.
And now she's getting more run.
She's getting more of a chance to play.
And you're seeing now what she can do it.
I mean, they are much better with her in the lineup and getting a significant,
more, a bigger amount of minutes.
And so I just think now they've kind of, you knew that was going to happen.
You've got to figure out who's going to produce how many minutes you're going to give people.
And I think now she's going to figure that out and she knows what she's got.
What is the ceiling for the Iowa women's basketball team?
The likelihood is that they're going to be hosting first and second.
round. Is it a sweet 16? Is a matchup dependent there to get to the round of eight? What would you say is the
upside for this women's team? I mean, I think they can get to the second weekend. The bad thing about it is
when they've played really, really good teams this year, they have not played well. So, you know,
you figure if they can get to the second weekend, if there are three seed, you're playing a two
seed, that's a team that's probably going to give. If you're a four seed and you've got to play a one,
you're going to have a lot of problems. And so that's why I think here the next few games is about
building a resume to be a two or three, you know, I don't think you're going to get to two,
but I think right now where you're at, you're almost on the edge of being a three, four,
somewhere in there.
Just keep playing well and then just keep your resume in that tag.
And you'll be in that three-seat.
And then the only difference is the next weekend is the color uniform you wear for that first game.
Final thing for you, John, John Bowencam, joining us from the Associated Press.
Over to Iowa football.
Some news today, Chad Leicichikow reporting that Omar Young,
is expected to be hired by the Las Vegas Raiders.
Omar Young, just one year on the job,
replacing Liddell Betts as the running back coach.
Now, I go back to the end of the season,
and it might even been during bull prep.
I just remember Kavari Moulton asked about the relationship.
It was kind of odd, I guess, his phrasing that he used here.
I know his personality is much different than Lidell Betts,
but this is one that just kind of leaves you scratching your head a little bit
because he seemed like a different kind of fit for the Iowa football program.
Right.
And I mean, he knew a lot of, he,
do a lot of concepts that kind of fit in with what Tim Lester does.
And so that's why I think he was kind of a good fit.
Well, now he's gone.
Now you've got to go find somebody else.
You know, I mean, I think now, you know, now you want to get stability in that room
because you're going to have a really good running back from here.
And so, I mean, you want to get somebody in there that's going to be able to work with these guys
and then work with the future and stay here for a few years and get back to what, you know,
kind of what they've been, you know, in terms of this coaching staff and then.
terms of this offensive staff so these guys can kind of get known.
But I mean, you know, you can't keep bringing new guys every year.
I think you've got to find somebody that's good here for a while.
Getting a little bit of stability with, of course, Kamari Bolton coming back,
Sabre Williams, Nathan McNeil, and the new one, as here comes LJ Phillips in from South
Dakota after nearly 2,000 yards on the ground a season to go.
John Bowencamp, joining us from the AP.
You can also find his work at Iowa College Hoops.com.
John, as always, thanks for the time.
Thanks for having me on.
Talk to you soon.
And no Dodgers talk for you, John.
We'll do that closer to the season with John Bowen Camp.
Thanks as always to, John, for his time here as we talk Hawkeyes with you on the daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast,
lot on Hawkeyes.
Well, we have some breaking news we're going to get into.
Speaking of that matchup tonight with the Iowa women against Purdue,
a pretty significant loss for the Iowa women, maybe not long term, but in the interim,

I'm Kleea Butler, host of Lockdown Women's Basketball,
and this is Mazda's Women's Basketball Snapshot,
celebrating the work no highlight reel can ever capture.
It was a heavyweight showdown between number three, South Carolina,
and number seven LSU,
and the Gamecocks rose to the occasion.
South Carolina secured a hard fought 79 to 72 victory to stay atop the SEC standings
using a balanced offensive attack to outlast the Tigers.
Tessa Johnson led the way with 21 points while Raven Johnson added 19.
Medina O'Kott dominated the paint with a double-double,
finishing with 12 points and 17 rebounds,
while Joyce Edwards chipped in 10 points to round out the scoring.
With the statement win, the gangcocks now turned their attention
to a road matchup at number 23, Alabama on Thursday.
These moments are earned off the clock,
those long before the lights ever come on.
The sweat, the fakes, the doubt, the scrapes,
and coming back for more every time.
Mazda puts that same drive into every detail.
Winds define the moment, putting in the work, that defines you.
There's more to a Mazda because there's more to you.
Today's episode of Lockdown Hawkeyes is brought to you by Fandul.
Welcome to the five-hour energy.
flavor draft. We're looking at every aspect of the draft and let you know which tasty flavors are
the best and which might be sleepers. The board is set. The flavors are ready and there's only
going to be one that can take the top spot. Five hour energy shots give you a boost with zero
sugar. So many new categories here, so many different flavors you can jump on. Now, I absolutely
love the sweet flavors. Cotton candy talk about a whole run. The sweet side of a tasty caffeine.
That absolutely sounds great with five-hour energy.
Pure sweetness from start to finish, sweet tooth fix and doing it without any of that sugar-gilt.
But that's not all.
They got bold flavors for you.
How about just a classic cherry?
Absolutely what you're looking for there.
Berry, grape, all in there, all available.
We go a little bit different.
Hawaiian breeze.
Ooh, that one sounds good.
Love the sound of that one.
A strawberry lemon, a little sweet, a little tart.
And the candy-like flavor, the draft is upon us.
and excited for what we have going on with five-hour energy.
Find your new favorite flavor of five-hour energy shots available online at five-hourenergy.com or on

Trent, kind of back with you one final time.
Locked on Hawkeyes, thanks for being with this and making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen
every day.
Well, mentioned just a moment ago right as we were wrapping up the podcast for today
here on a Thursday afternoon.
Some news came out and some big news ups.
Absolutely, as Hannah Stolke is out for tonight's game against Purdue.
This is from Chad Leisikau of the Des Moines Register per the University of Iowa.
It's an upper body injury and Stulke is considered day to day and is hopeful to play against
6th ranked Michigan on Sunday.
Does it paint a wonderful story?
And it's crazy after we've talked about this team dating back to last Thursday and the losing
streak with a win against Washington.
Come back on Monday, play great against Nebraska.
got Hannah Stolke at times felt like that senior light bulb was coming on right at the end of the
career knowing that the finish line is very close to the end of what we see so many times for
seniors of what they do at the end of their career. It was happening with Stalky and now unfortunately
she's going to be dealing with this injury. Upper body injury speculation you think those
shoulder that's probably the most likely that you're looking at there. Michigan, a huge match
up there. That's the only game that I was a projected underdog in in the remaining four games this
season. They are a 16 and a half point favorite at Fandul. I looked right before this news came out.
We'll see how much that changes the odds over at Fandul on this one. Even before the injury came
out on Stolke, I like the boiler makers and the points. I would get the win.
Thought this was going to be a little bit of a tussle after what they had, back-to-back road games,
everything that goes into it and the look-ahead factor with Michigan on deck. And this one
definitely going to change things. Dogfight, find a way, get a victory. Doesn't matter the fashion.
Just find a way tonight against the boiler.
makers and they'll have to do it without Anna Stolke.
That is it for us today.
