Starting point is 00:00:00 A new name emerges, a potential starter for Iowa football that we haven't talked about. We'll dive into that. More reaction from Big Ten Football Media Days. Plus, we hear from Tom Kaker today. Locked On Hawkeyes. Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. Hey welcome in, I'm Trent Condon and this is the Locked On Hawkeyes podcast, your daily source for all things
Starting point is 00:00:35 Hawkeyes. We talk Hawkeye football, basketball and a little more with you each and every day. I've been covering the Hawkeyes for over 20 years on the radio on the Iowa Sports Radio Network currently where you can hear me each weekday from noon to two talking the world of sports in Des Moines, Sioux City, Iowa City, the Quad Cities, and Cedar Rapids, including our flagship 106.3 KXNO in Des Moines. Today's episode of the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast is brought to you by FanDuel. Right now, new customers can get $150 in bonus bets when your first $5 bet wins.
Starting point is 00:01:08 All right, so today, we're gonna talk some basketball. Colin Rice, are we concerned that Iowa's lost another in-state player, Ben McCollum, in year number one, trying to get this ship righted as the Huskers were able to nab one there? We'll be joined by Tom Kaker from Hawkeye Report, a look at what he sees and what he saw in Las Vegas for Big Ten football media days
Starting point is 00:01:29 And we again go to that conversation. There's gonna be more and more content. That's coming out here in the coming days We got a full audio if you missed that from Kurt Ferentz and the live portion that is up on YouTube We also have that for you on the other side on the audio side of things coming up over the weekend Oh, we're gonna hear from Ethan Hurkett. We've got another piece from Kirk Barrett to the side of Beth Getz. So lots more still coming here in the next week as we continue to pump out the content to you from what we heard and saw from Big Ten Football Media Days. And we'll have that for you. And as mentioned, Tom Kicker, who is also there, he's going to join us a little bit later on and we'll get his perspective on a couple
Starting point is 00:02:05 Of different things but now after a day to sit and kind of alright take that deep breath. I Heard a ton of things now. Let's try to kind of bring it back together And what did we hear and there's a name that I just haven't talked about when it comes to One of those spots in the defensive backfield and I should and it's on me. I should have brought up his name more but it's Jalen Watson. So Jalen Watson a season ago as a true freshman played in 10 games used his red shirt a season ago. He is now a true sophomore out of Michigan a guy that came in and a guy that's really confident Kirk relayed a story as it was on their sideline He was the gunner on a play and just what they saw out of him on that
Starting point is 00:02:53 and it's one instant but That he was getting it that it was starting to click and then I talked with Cohen entering her a little bit later on and Cohen brought up his name and I went back to a season ago and some of the things that were talked about and he's still a true freshman last year, right? But he's got to be there and he needs to be part of that conversation. TJ Hall, I guess is as close to a presumed starter as he have a cornerback this season. It sounded like TJ Hall had a really good spring and we saw improvements from here as the year went on. He had a rough start to his career. I know that's the memory bank for a lot of people. And what we saw from him a couple of times a year ago, and
Starting point is 00:03:33 though it wasn't always his fault, quote unquote, and you're passing off coverage and you don't know what the safety was going to be or who was supposed to be where. Sometimes cornerbacks looked like they were burnt and it actually wasn't even their assignment. But we saw the Ascension out of TJ Hall. We've seen now 15 games of the Sean Lee. He has been a starter for 15 games and played a whole lot more than that. We're still me, I think, waiting for that moment where it all clicks for him. And so when that's happening
Starting point is 00:04:05 and there's still those question marks, he starts to dig a little bit deeper. There was a reason that they went to the transfer portal and brought in Shahid Burrows, who will come in from South Dakota in a similar system without the ability to go through spring football, but this is gonna be a guy they anticipate
Starting point is 00:04:20 is going to be able to push for some minutes. And then I think you have to be right there and you're talking about Jalen Watson And speaking of Jalen Watson needs to be in the mix and in the conversation Maybe to be a starter and that's something that Kirk talked about a lot right that there was Going to be open competitions a lot deeper and a lot more than them than normal The floor of the ceiling of this team looks different because of that to be open competitions a lot deeper and a lot more than them than normal. The floor of the ceiling of this team looks different because of that. What other name also is Rashad Godfrey, also a redshirt freshman, was in the same class
Starting point is 00:04:58 as a Watson, but his name keeps coming up. And the thing about Godfrey is just his size. I mean, he's a big guy or a cornerback. He's not a big guy in general. He's 6'1.95. But, big dude. Another one of those Tampa area kids from Armwood High School red-shirted last season, but that's another name that just continues to come up in those conversations. For him, you're number one. The likelihood is we we're gonna see Rashad Godfrey this year on Specialty that's where he start to make that first step right there's another thing you got his number change one from 17 to 7 Hmm you believe in you only get to give single-digit numbers to guys. They're gonna play It's not always the case it may be a little bit of a stretch on that one
Starting point is 00:05:44 But back to the hit the conversation at hand and that is Watson. We got another one of these players offensively that we just haven't talked about a ton. We will get that to you in a coming podcast as well, but some names to know on the defensive side of the football, what it's going to look like. Uh, Preston Reese on the linebacker spot, his name came up every single time. Now it's that group of three guys, right? It's buffington, Weisskopf, Reese, those three redshirt freshmen that we've heard so much about, but it's the exploits in the weight room that I think is taking Preston Reese to another level. Ethan Hurkett brought him up and talking about some of the young players that are going to get a push. Look, there's still opportunity there and
Starting point is 00:06:24 we don't know what Yose Eppines is going to look on that defensive line. And is he going to be a part of the rotation this season? Is it situational play? Do they want to maintain his redshirt status? We just, we don't know. Do they see him more as an interior guy or a guy that's going to play on the outside? How does that impact how quickly he's going to play this season? That group of redshirt freshmen on the defensive line.
Starting point is 00:06:46 There's talent and Iowa, I think they've recruited well. Yeah, you'd like to see more in a couple of different spots and I get all that, but as Kirk said, I like this team. Now I liked the team last year. I bought in too much on too much of the hype after telling me and I feel like I'm at times doing the same thing this season. It's more fun to be optimistic than be pessimistic. And until we actually see it, until I have things to actually be upset about, I'm buying. Kirk likes the team, I like the team. We'll see how that goes.
Starting point is 00:07:20 Tom Kaker was with me in Las Vegas and we will talk with him coming up next. Look at Iowa football, his perspective, and a little bit of Iowa basketball, including Ben McCollum losing a big time recruit here from the state of Iowa to the neighbors Nebraska. We'll talk about that with Tom Kaker when we come back on the Locked On Hawkeyes podcast. He joins me on the radio on a weekly basis and here's the conversation with Tom. Tom Kakert's Hawkeye Report. He joins me on the radio on a weekly basis and here's the conversation with Tom.
Starting point is 00:09:06 Tom Kakert's playing the song. Apparently the plane was on time. He is back from Big Ten Media Days in Las Vegas and he joins us. Tom Trenton, Ken, thanks for coming on. Flight was on time apparently, Tom. It was a little late. We were about a half hour late getting out of there, but we made some time up in the air. It wasn't bad. So now I'm just sitting in traffic on I-80 because there's an accident he found. So there you go. Welcome back. Yeah, really. How was TSA for you this morning at Harry Reid Airport? It was great because I last year made the smart decision to get the, uh, it's the, the, the, the pass thing.
Starting point is 00:09:49 Yeah. The pre-check pre-check. Yeah. Yeah. The best, the best like 75 bucks you ever spent. Yeah. Yeah. Five years, 75 bucks, I think 78 bucks, something like that.
Starting point is 00:10:04 And it's, it's a brief. Yeah, that's I didn't know was for five years. So that does make it a little more economical. Yeah, it's not a yearly thing that you have to renew or anything like that. Once for five years, and there'll be so many times you'll be looking at those suckers in line. I know, move right on through don't have to take off your belt, your shoes, nothing.
Starting point is 00:10:23 We don't have to take off our shoes anymore your shoes, nothing like that. Well, we don't have to take off our shoes anymore. Well, you might run into a rogue agent. That's true. That's true. Tom, let's get to what we learned or what we think we learned from the three days out in Las Vegas. Obviously, we'll start with Iowa from yesterday. I saw Big Ten Network, so that's where I'm getting my takes from listening to Kirk there. You were there in person, saw the players, I'm guessing you're part of Beth Getz as well, the scrum that she had. Take away or two from what you heard pursuant to the Hawkeyes as they get sent for 2025. Well, Trent can probably back me up on this. Kirk, he was very kind of quietly confident about this. That's what he said. I opened up the show with the exact same
Starting point is 00:10:59 comment, Tom. Oh my gosh. Well, that's how you're come six and six Yeah, here comes six and six or five and seven. Yeah, right down the right down Broadway He does and I thought it was interesting He made a comment about that the wide receivers are kind of gonna make that leap that the line made last year the offensive line Seems pretty excited about just in general the guys. And the other thing that I thought was interesting that he said and maybe a harbinger for something is like, hey, you know, the depth chart, there's going to be somebody that becomes Pat Anger or Rick Stansi. And, you know, this year that's going to be that second stringer that comes up and ends up being a starter
Starting point is 00:11:45 and a big contributor. And I wonder if he's got a feel on that. And I'm not saying quarterback because I think Grunowski is the guy, but if there's a couple of guys that are kind of right there and you don't know about the first string guys that might jump up there. So I kind of, my thought went to linebacker more than anyplace else, but that was just me. Let me jump in here for a second when it comes to Stansi. He kind of said the same thing on Big Ten Network, that he went with the starter too long and he brought up Ricky Stansi and I never heard him say that before, that Stansi should have played earlier, but it was
Starting point is 00:12:23 him that held them back. So maybe there is something to that comment, Tom. Yeah, there's something cooking there because it's in his brain. And I just, I wonder if, you know, he mentioned yesterday, you know, he mentioned anger and that was Jacody Coleman starting a middle linebacker. So, and the guys, the three players, they, Robert just stood delightful. I mean, you know, Logan Jones is just the style, same with Hercut. And what a great story Cohen and Tringer is.
Starting point is 00:12:51 And his parents were there. They made the trip to see him and they were so proud of him. They actually flew back on the flight this morning with us and they're still beaming just how proud they are of that young guy what he does he's Amazing I mean I just spent 10 minutes with him And I know you've interacted it with him a whole lot more and yeah one of the other reporters I was standing next to me asked about that so I looked over my shoulder and there's mom Right next to me just to my left sit down at one of the seats and he's so engaging. He's so thoughtful
Starting point is 00:13:22 I asked him about you know what kind of spin he's gonna put on the cash position That's kind of what I was going to because he'll played a bunch of different types I mean you think Dane Belton that more angular guy Castro smaller hard-hitting physical thick and He brought up all four of the guys that have started at the cash position He's incredibly thoughtful his tie has a bunch of the defensive acts numbers on it that he was wearing really that guy I I don't know how long his football career is going to go But he might be our next day Jay Eads, right? That's gonna be running big ten football because he is so smart and engaging he when I was over there
Starting point is 00:13:56 He also mentioned he's got another year that he could use at Iowa. So Junior yeah count them out and he's being kind of coy about whether he's cash or whether he's going to be the strong safety. I think regardless, I think maybe he's cashed. And then when they go the traditional four-three, he floats back to strong, you know, kind of like Castro did last year with Xavier Wampa. That's my guess. When Ference was asked about that, I don't know what the question was, but he was talking about the receivers at the end of it. And he went out of his way to mention
Starting point is 00:14:28 Reese Vanderzee, Tom. That was the, I think the only one he said by name. I could be mistaken, but that's the one that stuck with me was he brought up Reese Vanderzee and how he thinks there's a step there. Yeah. And he's had a full year. Remember last year, I think he was playing baseball. Was he? This one? Wow. Yeah. Yeah, I think he was playing baseball.
Starting point is 00:14:49 So he didn't get into everything until later, fully. I think he'd come in every once in a while and get some workouts in. Yeah, he's an interesting player. KJ Parker's the guy that I'm really kind of jazzed about that I think has got a shot at being pretty special. That room is so much deeper. I really feel like there's seven guys in that room that could help him this year.
Starting point is 00:15:17 Even Seth Anderson, if he stays healthy, I picked him as the guy who leads him in receiving yards. So I'm betting on health with him and Carson Shire this year. And if that happens, they're going to be in really good shape. I want to put it to you this way, Tom. I walked away with the same. If everything goes right, they get the brakes, they pull an upset at home. Grunowski is the real deal.
Starting point is 00:15:40 This team can go 10 and two. We've seen that kind of upside before, and I think it happened even with this schedule. But is maybe the floor lower than it normally is where look, at minimum they're gonna be 7 and 5, right? Could you see this season because there are still question marks at left tackle at some of the depth pieces, what linebackers gonna look like? Have they figured out that second corner if TJ Hall is the guy at the first corner spot that maybe the floor is lower for this Iowa football team than normal. I think I'm most concerned about the defense just because there are so many questions. It's just I know it's insane to think that because I asked Cohen and go, what's Phil
Starting point is 00:16:18 like talking about? Like, because you guys give up too many explosive plays. And he was basically like every day, every day since the spring they talked about it's done not giving up big plays not giving up big plays because that was one Talking to Phil this summer. I mean that's one of the things that's just sticking in his craw right now is that they gave up way more explosives than they have in the past and So he's he's gonna be zeroed in on that And so he's, he's going to be zeroed in on that. Um, you know, the guy to watch maybe is the Shahid Barros, the kid they got from South Dakota at corner. I think he's got a chance to maybe start this year.
Starting point is 00:16:54 And I keep an eye on Jaylen Watson. Um, that's a kid that entering her brought up as well. And he's a Michigan kid, so he's a little biased there maybe, but, um, you know, technically a Michigan kid, he finished up his high school in, in Ohio, but, um, he grew up in Michigan. You know, there's the name. I was thinking about this. So it was, everybody asked about this one guy last year, just because of the
Starting point is 00:17:15 shoes he was filling and nobody's talking about him. This should restake it. Oh yeah. Remember how big of a talker he was? Uh, when, when, when they look back at his freshman campaign, Tom, knowing that there was all brand new to him, et cetera, um, certainly saw some glimpses. No, he's not Tory Taylor. Um, so few are right.
Starting point is 00:17:33 Um, but I would have to think that they had to be pleased with that knowing that there's more there. Oh, yeah. I thought he was, you know, really good. I thought he was, you know, like I said, not Torrey Taylor, but he's in that neighborhood. And he the big thing with him, he's put on 20 pounds of muscle and he loves to be happy to tell you that he put on 20 pounds of muscle. So he's, yeah, he's enjoying putting on the weight and getting some getting some guns going.
Starting point is 00:18:04 But he's stronger in his lower body, too He thinks that's gonna help him with his the strength in his kicks, especially later in the year. You mentioned KJ Parker He's been one of those buzz guys of the summer I don't know if I forgot about him or just did whatever reason But Watson over on the defensive side of the football competing maybe for that second cornerback spot, he burned his red shirt a year ago. He played on special teams a ton. And for whatever reason, at least in Ken and my conversation, he hasn't come up very often entering or brought him up.
Starting point is 00:18:35 Kirk brought him up or, or maybe at least at minimum, Ken and I sleeping a little bit on Watson and his ability maybe to push for that other second starting spot at corner. Yeah, I think he's going to push pretty hard for one of those spots. I really do. He's really good and really talented and he's just, he's got really good ball skills. He could play receiver. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:58 He's just, he's that good. Um, and they just put them on the, on the defensive side. I'm not saying he's Desmond King, but he's gonna be pretty pretty solid. I think he's just he the big thing for him when he came in is he was just a little lean and he's starting to fill out. Thanks to him at media day to see what he looks like. But the scene in the spring I thought he he had put on some weight and gotten bigger and stronger. And I'm sure he's, he just got really good ball skills. That's the thing that Phil really thinks about it. Let's do this, Tom, in our final couple of minutes with you. Just let's go to a
Starting point is 00:19:34 couple of teams that maybe cause you to take another look at either, well, maybe I underestimated this team and there's no way, or there's no way this team is going to be as good as I potentially thought. Who would those schools be? Um, I don't think Maryland's going to be any good. I thought it was weird that Loxley admitted that they lost locker room basically. That was weird. You're right. That was just really, you wonder if that guy's, you know, I don't know who they would hire to replace them, but he might be on this way out the door
Starting point is 00:20:08 When Nebraska's confident They really are They're confident, but they're covenant every year It seems like but I did I'm just keeping an eye on the Huskers a little bit and I know that won't be very happy that per Iowa fans to hear but little bit. And I know that won't be very happy that per Iowa fans to hear, but, um, you know, rule seems to really make a leap in his third year on the college level. So, um, we'll, we'll see. Um, I'm always skeptical with the Oscars,
Starting point is 00:20:36 but by there were, they were walking the talk pretty good, uh, in Vegas. Speaking of the Huskers, kers, the Husker and Fred Hoyberg's got a new commit. Colin Rice from Waukee Northwest is going to go over, I don't know, apparently his sister dates one of the Sanford's or something like that, or he dates a younger Sanford, I don't know, some kind of connection. Waukee Northwest, I guess Lincoln is the new suburb over there. Yeah, they've got Price and I think Price got people riled up by... He did, I saw that. the new suburb over there. Yeah. They've got, got price.
Starting point is 00:21:05 And I think price got people riled up by, he got them all riled up apparently. And, um, yeah. So, um, yeah, he dates, um, Payton price's younger sister. So, um, I think she's a golfer. Oh, so, um, yeah, not a Hooper. I don't think. Um, but, um, there's Sanford's are really nice people. So, and I love paper price, but price like prices, having some fun
Starting point is 00:21:34 with the whole thing, it did not surprise me. I've been saying for quite a while that Alan was probably headed to Nebraska. Uh, I, I just, I was surprised he didn't make his decision. that Alan was probably headed to Nebraska. I was surprised he didn't make his decision before the start of that last July period, but then now he just, he was supposed to go. I talked to him, basically about a week ago in Chicago, and he was kind of looking at some, you know, making a visit to Illinois next week and Northwestern. So I think in his heart of hearts when I was talking to him. Nebraska was like 4D, that
Starting point is 00:22:16 is a game, a first game. So they had everybody there. So they were putting on the full court press. Good stuff, Tom Kekert. It was good to see you with Circa on, when was it? Tuesday night. Good to see you there. Spend some time with you and Michael Loss, et cetera. Tom, thank you. I will chat with you next Friday, okay? Okay. Okay. Thanks, guys. See you, buddy. See you. Tom Cakert, HawkeyeReport.com, part of On3Media. There's Tom, and appreciate, as always, his time for us here. As we continue on the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast, your team every day,
Starting point is 00:22:48 let's talk a little bit more about basketball. What's happening in the recruiting trail with Ben McCollum Squad, Hawkeye basketball recruiting next, Lockdown Hawkeyes. Trent Kynan back with you one final time. This is the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast. Thanks for making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day and a big thank you to you every dayers with us each and every day. Couldn't do it without you.
Starting point is 00:23:18 So as we talked about just a moment ago with Tom Cakert from Hawkeye Report, there will be no Colin Rice, at least for the here and now at the University of Iowa. In this environment, you never know, right? And we know very quickly things can change. And that is certainly the case with Colin Rice, with, well, anybody as it pertains to college athletics today. It's a different world. and it's the new reality is you don't know how this is going to turn out. We don't know what this is going to look like and you don't want to burn any bridges. That's the other component to this is you don't want to make any mistakes. I called a bunch of Collins games. I never saw him as a mustad.
Starting point is 00:24:01 What are those guys that you'd be devastated if you don't hit on? But it's a guy that Ben McCollum wanted. Now it is interesting that he was playing at the same spot. He was a teammate of his son Peyton at minimum. That's interesting, right? But he also put in the Nebraska angle that he has with the Sanford family price already there and it all starts to make a little bit more sense putting it all together So there are a few names for the class of 2026 next year's recruiting class for Iowa basketball that I was getting pretty deep on the first is Cantrell Hort Harmon and Harmon
Starting point is 00:24:43 The first is Cantrell-Hort, Harmon. And Harmon might be a point guard, might be a two guard, might be a combo guard, which is French for not a point guard. I like Harmon, though. Watching some of the tape with him, I like the way that he plays. I like the strength that he plays with and envisioning him in Ben McCollum's system. Cantrell Harmon is a guy that I get really excited about. Now he's also a guy that is going to be difficult to get. First he's a West coast guy. He's from Utah. Creighton is amongst them.
Starting point is 00:25:18 Alabama has been flirting around, trying to get deeper involved with him. Creighton, I was, some people believe are at the top of his list. But some money schools are also coming, including SMU, who we know will spend. And UCLA, who maybe is trying to spend. And those are the most recent offers that he had along with Alabama. It's an uphill climb, but McCullman company have done, I think all the right things. Out of the group, this is the guy that I would probably put at the top of my list. Some other names that are out there include Quentin Coleman.
Starting point is 00:25:56 And Coleman is probably that backup candidate, if you will. He's a guy a little bit deeper down the list um depending but he's blown up recently and with the evaluation period here the last week I mean when you all add offers in a week from Wake Forest and Texas Tech and Iowa and Kansas State and Illinois you know the Quinton Coleman he had a pretty good goal but he's a st. Louis kid. It's always interesting. I was. It's not, they don't have a ton of St. Louis guys. Yeah. Adrian Claiborne, right? Marvin Mcnutt. There's a couple of St. Louis guys and on the hardwood, of course, Tyler recently, but that would be just,
Starting point is 00:26:36 if you could open up that pipeline, how good it could be for them. So of the guard prospects, a Carlos menlock.
