Locked On Hawkeyes - Daily Podcast On Iowa Hawkeyes Football & Basketball - VACATED: Iowa Football Loses 4 WINS from 2023 Season - IMPACT on Kirk Ferentz's Legacy

Episode Date: April 15, 2026

In this episode of the Locked On Hawkeyes Podcast, host Trent Condon leads with the major news surrounding Kirk Ferentz and the Iowa Hawkeyes football program being forced to vacate wins from the 2023... season. The penalties stem from recruiting violations tied to the recruitment of Cade McNamara, casting a shadow over what had been a successful year on the field. Condon breaks down what vacated wins actually mean—how they impact record books more than day-to-day perception—and discusses the broader implications for Ferentz’s legacy and program oversight. While the punishment is more symbolic than competitive, it still adds another layer of scrutiny to Iowa’s operation. Shifting back to the field, the episode previews the Iowa offensive line as spring practice continues. Condon emphasizes how critical the unit will be to the Hawkeyes’ offensive improvement heading into the upcoming season. With questions lingering from past inconsistencies, there’s a focus on development, depth, and whether the group can establish a stronger identity in both pass protection and the run game. The tone is cautiously optimistic, with attention given to how spring reps are shaping the competition and cohesion up front. The show wraps up with a look at transfer portal activity across Iowa athletics. On the women’s side, the Iowa Hawkeyes women's basketball are reportedly closing in on a potential commitment from Amari Whiting, which could be a significant addition. Meanwhile, the Iowa Hawkeyes men's basketball are actively evaluating frontcourt help, having hosted Andrew McKeeter from St. Mary’s following his recent visit. They’re also attempting to get involved with Ace Glass, though his current visit to Vanderbilt Commodores men's basketball may complicate things. Condon highlights how pivotal these portal moves will be in shaping both rosters for the upcoming season. Starting point is 00:00:01 Four wins gone. Cade McNamara, a recruiting violation, and now Iowa and Kirk Ferrence's record, take a hit. What this means for the Hawkeyes going forward. You are Locked on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. Hey, welcome in. I'm Trent Condon, and this is the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast. Thanks for making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day on your daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast. Buddy to get into here today, we're going to take a look at the latest from the transfer portal.
Starting point is 00:00:44 Some rumblings that more commitments are coming on the women's basketball front. We'll get into that. What of Iowa's top targets has taken his visit to Iowa City and another one that is taking a visit to an SEC school? We'll get into all of that. We'll continue our preview as well. Other position groups for Iowa football today. A spotlight on the offensive line as we will break things down.
Starting point is 00:01:06 two starters back from a year ago rebuilding to be done what coach barnett and company have in store for them will break that down. But we begin with the news of the day and that is Kirk Ferrenson, Iowa football, having to vacate four victories from back in the 2020, 23 football season because of the tampering, the illegal contact with one Cade McNamara. Now, if you've been a long time listener, if you're an everydayer, you certainly know my thoughts on Cade McNamara and the way that things ended. There was plenty of excitement when Cade McNamara made his commitment to Iowa. In fact, when he was getting ready to enter the portal and Iowa's name was bandied about, there was excitement. Remember, Iowa was coming on the heels of three years of Spencer Petrus and a lot of
Starting point is 00:01:49 frustration at the quarterback position and the hope when he looked at Cade McNamara, a guy that was an absolute winner at Michigan and put up good numbers, was third team all Big Ten, that this was going to translate and this was going to be the kind of quarterback that A could fit in Iowa and get that passing game turned around. We know that's not the case. And obviously, this did not go very well. So he's injured at Michigan, his final year there. And during that time, he had lost his job to J.J. McCarthy before the portal opened,
Starting point is 00:02:21 before he entered the transfer portal, according to the report from the NCAA, John Budmeyer made 13 phone calls and a couple of text messages with the McNamaris, including dad, and son, and that's what led to this violation. Tampering. Something that happens every day in the NCAA, but the problem is, I would didn't do it the way the most do, which is you reach out not to the actual player, you reach out to an agent, an old high school coach, maybe a seven-on-seven coach. That's the way things are done now.
Starting point is 00:02:57 I would didn't do it that way. They self-reported. Kirk Farrant sat out a game already to begin the 2024 season. That was also a component that was in there, but it was not enough for the NCAA as they decided that they are going to continue vacating of wins. Now, this is something that has happened for a long time. And one of the few things that the NCAA can do when member institutions have violations like this is that's what you can do. For Kirk Barrett, that means four wins are vacated off his victories. It does not pull him below the threshold.
Starting point is 00:03:30 He's still the all-time Big Ten winner, a leader in wins. so that does not go away at that mark. But it does hurt him a little bit as it pertains to down the road. And his candidacy to be a college football Hall of Famer, we'll talk about that a little bit more. Back to McNamara. And a guy that talk about being the turd in the punch bowl, that was most definitely Cade McNamara.
Starting point is 00:03:51 He was, came in full of bravado, definitely attitude, and a guy that like the spotlight, like being a big 10 quarterback, like letting everybody know, that he was a big 10 quarterback. But I thought we saw his true colors after yet another injury, rabid season in 2024 when he shut it down
Starting point is 00:04:11 and made the decision not to travel to Maryland, said that it was concussions. That was the reason. Look, he quit on the team. There's no two ways about it. And nobody will ever, ever be able to move me past that thought. That my opinion is he quit on that football team. In a year where Iowa was struggling mightily,
Starting point is 00:04:32 they were looking for anything to try to just salvage the season, and he shut it down. That's his prerogative. You can do that. That's college athletics today. But I think it says a lot about his character the way that that was handled, the way that that went out. And as I was traveling out to Maryland and the reports start to come in,
Starting point is 00:04:52 that came back to Merah's not with the team. That says a lot about him as a guy. That aside. And the one part about this that maybe is the most confounding. And it is, again, part of this new era of college athletics, of college sports is where you have these players, where you have these guys that you don't get to know. You don't have the same baseline and background that you do in the old traditional way of recruiting. Where do you get to know a guy for months, years on end, before eventually they make their commitment and before they even get on campus. This happens very quickly.
Starting point is 00:05:30 And because of that, you do not get to know the person. But one thing about Kirk Farrant's more than anything is I believe he is a tremendous judge of character. And he missed on this one. You know, Will pulled over his eyes, whatever phrasing you want to use. That is maybe looking back at all of this, how surprising it was. Now, they were desperate. And this was a guy running through the desert with no water. I mean, that's where Iowa was at the quarterback spot and the frustrations that preceded it.
Starting point is 00:06:00 And they were looking for anything, a lifeline. and they thought they had that in Cade McNamara. But it's the character issue that really surprises me, looking back upon it and the way this played out. Four wins off the record. And now for Kirk Farrant's, that means that his win percentage that was incredibly close to the threshold to make the college football playoff.
Starting point is 00:06:20 You have to win at minimum. Well, it was 60%. They lowered that to 59.5% to be in there. So before this, he was above 60%. 225 wins, 149 losses in his career. a 602 win percentage. You take these four games away. That drops it down to 221 and 149.
Starting point is 00:06:40 You do not get credit or these games that are vacated. Do not become losses on the resume. That's not the way that it works. But the win percentage drops down to 59.7% now is what it drops down to. Still above the threshold, but there's work to be done. And keeping that up there if he is going to be a college football Hall of Famer down the road. Do I think Kirk Ference cares about that? Not really.
Starting point is 00:07:05 He doesn't seem like a big legacy type of guy in terms of those kind of things. He doesn't feel like a guy that's after counting stats. He's after wins, building up young men, and building him into great adults. Those are the things that I think matter most to Kirk Ferenz. It's a blip. It's nothing I think that we need to be freaking out about, but it is frustrating. I mean, when you have outright cheating that is happening in college football, Daria Menson, Mentsa has a two-year deal with Duke.
Starting point is 00:07:35 And Miami just buys out of it. A two-year contract that is there, obviously tampering happened that he knows where he wants to go in Miami. They get out of the deal happens. What was going on with Old Miss and Clemson and just on and on and on? It's happening everywhere. And probably Iowa's biggest problem is they self-reported things. And they self-reported things and made and got this ball rolling and eventually led to a one-game suspension in 2024. and then the vacating of the wins from 2023.
Starting point is 00:08:03 You know, another crazy part about that is just that 2020 season. I mean, when we look back upon this year, just how absolutely wild this whole thing is, starting off the year. And in fact, well, it was the only win against Iowa State, and now it's vacated since 2021. But they get off to the good start. Cade back to Merrill looks decent against Utah State. Still, they were outgained in that game.
Starting point is 00:08:27 They beat Iowa State. They're out to a 20 to three win. They hold on for the 20 to 13 victory. Blount Western Michigan, non-competitive against Penn State on the road. They come back home. Cooper DeGine has a late punt return for a touchdown against Michigan State. I guess that's wiped off the board. That was also the season after McNamara went down.
Starting point is 00:08:45 They went into Camp Randall in the middle of October. I gave them absolutely no shot with Deacon Hill at the quarterback spot. They got out of 15 to 6 victory. That won the Cooper de Gene. Not fair catch game against Minnesota was in there. They went to Wrigley Field. Got the walk-up win against Northwestern there, beat Illinois 15-13. Another field goal victory against Nebraska at the end.
Starting point is 00:09:06 They get to the Big Ten championship game and then don't score there. Don't score in the bowl game against Tennessee. Just a wild season. So weird and so crazy. You know, one other thing that I kind of forgot about that year, that portal hall was pretty good. At least we thought on the surface that season. Came back to Merrill was a headliner. They also get Eric All for Michigan.
Starting point is 00:09:30 He was excellent. Seth Anderson, I would have to say, a disappointing career. Deacon Hill came in, thought he was never going to see the field. Obviously, he did. Dejan Parker was another one of the big guys that they got from Saginaw Valley. He doesn't play. Caleb Brown, the former four-star wide receiver from Ohio State. We thought this was going to be a great receiver for Iowa. That didn't happen.
Starting point is 00:09:52 The two guys that really popped were Nick Jackson, obviously, a great two years with the Hawkeyes. And Rusty Feth, who helped out in the middle of the office. offensive line that year. But what felt like this was going to be this great portal hall really didn't turn out to be that. And he got it. And the other crazy part about this, I want to mention to is Kid McNamara when these phone calls were happening. And John Budmeyer is breaking the rules out there and look at Iowa. His kid McNamara wasn't even with Michigan. No, this wasn't a guy that was sitting in his apartment in Ann Arbor. He was at a frat party on campus, taking phone calls from Iowa he was rehabbing in California at the time.
Starting point is 00:10:31 He wasn't even around the program. And McNamara wasn't quick to get in the portal. It didn't happen right away because Michigan was still competing. And playing at a high level that season as JJ McCarthy had taken over the reins and eventually moved on and what they were able to do. Speaking of Michigan that year, and they got a guy on the sideline, obviously cheating, going to other sidelines cheating.
Starting point is 00:10:53 You have a program that has a coach get a four-game suspension during the course of a national championship season, you have Conner Stallions getting a game ball in Iowa City, and yet crickets. Crickets on that side. It's funny how things like that work, isn't it? Goes back to the old adage, the old sign, and I can't remember who said it, something along the lines of.
Starting point is 00:11:22 You better be careful. Kentucky might get another violation. Kentucky basketball and ball state's going to have to pay the price. And in a way, it kind of feels like that. Michigan, do whatever you want. Give game balls to guys that come up with schemes in order to steal singles, something that is illegal. No problem.
Starting point is 00:11:41 When a national JAPIDG, Joe. Iowa struggles through a year with Deakin Hill at the quarterback spot, has to vacate four wins. In the grand scheme of things, it's not a big deal. But boys are frustrating. Absolutely frustrating. And if you got cyclone fans in your life, if you got Badger fans, Minnesota fans,
Starting point is 00:11:58 whatever it is, a rival, those weirdos over to the west of us, that does sting a little bit. It's a little more ammunition for them. Look, I'm still going to have the memories of the game. Those are not going to go away. They can't take those away from us and what we saw. That was also the year leading in that we had the gambling violations too. That happened.
Starting point is 00:12:18 Just 2023. There needs to be a book written about that season. and just the wildness that happened in that year. And yet Iowa found a way to get to the Big Ten championship game. And what was, is that the final year of the Big Ten West? I think it was wild. Let's get into some real football. And what we're going to see on the field this season.
Starting point is 00:12:36 Coming up next, we're going to talk a little bit about Iowa football on the field. And we're going to take a look at the offensive line. It has turned into a strength, the Joe Moore Award winner from a year ago. But three starters to replace and a lot of depth. We'll talk about that as we continue, locked on Hawkeyes. I'm Kleea Butler, host of Lockdown Women's Basketball, and this is Mazda's Women's Basketball Snapshot, celebrating the work no highlight reel can ever capture. UCLA made history by winning its first NCAA Women's Basketball National Championship,
Starting point is 00:13:10 dominating South Carolina 79 to 51. The Bruins controlled the game from start to finish with elite defense and balanced scoring, finishing the season 37 and 1. Star Center Lauren Betts was named Most Outstanding Player, leading a team effort that capped a 31 game winning streak. Under head coach, Corey Close, UCLA secured a landmark title that has been decades in the making. These moments are earned off the clock, those long before the lights ever come on.
Starting point is 00:13:41 The sweat, the fakes, the doubt, the scrapes, and coming back for more every time. Mazda puts that same drive into every detail. Wins defined the moment. putting in the work that defines you. There's more to a Mazda because there's more to you. Trent, back with you once again here on the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast. Starting point is 00:14:19 dot supercast.com. Let's get into the big guys up front, the offensive line as we continue our spring positional breakdowns of each of the position groups. And you start with the two guys that return out of the starting group from a year ago. Obviously, Cade Piper working inside, going to the center position after being a guard the last couple of years. He was the sixth man two years ago, the first offensive lineman in, and then, of course, a season as a starter a year ago.
Starting point is 00:14:46 Talk about power, athleticism. hail toss haytoss champion over in soul and a beef days he has got a powerful frame a guy that would have been a draft pick this season if he would have come out still just a junior in eligibility but making that move inside into the center position is difficult i mean there's still a learning process that goes along with it understanding all the calls getting everybody in the right spot so there is going to be a little bit of growth that happens and i mean we go back and we think of some of the guys. And remember Logan Jones at the beginning of his career and how much he struggled at the center position early on before developing into the stalwart that he was the last
Starting point is 00:15:26 couple of years. I anticipate we'll see some of those growing pains again this year. Good news is at least non-conference doesn't look overly daunting, but got to be ready to go with the Big Ten Slate with Ohio State, Michigan, and Washington to open things up going to be difficult. And then the other starter coming back, Trevor Lout, who was in that fight a year ago with Jack Dotsler for the tackle position. You've wondered exactly how that was going to shake out. Was it going to be a time share? We've seen that plenty of times.
Starting point is 00:15:51 Kirk Ferenz using a couple of different guys at that spot. Lalk really just took the job and ran with it. And by the end of the year, he was playing at an incredibly high level. Look at the numbers from pro football focus. He graded out incredibly high at that spot. Speaking of tampering, there are some rumblings out there that is home state Hoosiers. Maybe we're trying to talk him into making his way there.
Starting point is 00:16:12 That didn't happen as he stayed in. Iowa City, but Trevor Lough is going to be an absolute stud. You're in really good shape with those two guys. At the right tackle position, Jack Dotsler, after being very close a year ago and when he was in there, I thought he was perfectly fine. You anticipate he's going to be the starter at the right tackle position. Another guy that saw a lot of playing time a year ago because of injuries was late Jones. He came in a couple of different times and I thought played well when he was in there.
Starting point is 00:16:39 And certainly not some of the big drop off that we've seen in the past when a backup has to go in there. you're feeling good. It comes down to the fifth position. And at this point in time, we're still awaiting a decision of Michael Misalinski. You talk about the good stories of Iowa football, the guys that have waited their turn, developed and turned into really good guys by the end.
Starting point is 00:16:59 Well, he's looking for a six year of eligibility, had a ton of injuries early in his career. A guy from Florida had an offer from Florida, had a Texas offer, wanted to come to Iowa City, has stuck it out. And you hope, hey, he gets that final year of eligibility, but also, well, he is able to have a healthy season because I don't think it's a talent thing,
Starting point is 00:17:19 hasn't had a ton of reps, and that's going to be maybe the concern that you go into. And then he starts to get into some of the young guys. Lucas Algeyer appears to be kind of the next in line of the great offensive lineman coming forward, still just a red shirt freshman, but heard a bunch about him last year during practice that he was really turning heads for a young guy at the offensive, a guard spot this year, and probably maybe a right tackle after this, maybe taking over. over for Jack Dotsler. That could be one. Speaking of tackle, Cannon Leonard, who is huge, six foot nine, 300 plus pounds. Cannon Leonard's a guy that feels like he's maybe taking
Starting point is 00:17:53 some step forwards and give himself a chance to be a rotational piece, be a backup this year, and maybe step forward during his final year of eligibility to become a starter out there on the right side. They went in the transfer portal. They got Trent Wilson who comes in. He's been banked up this spring out of James Madison, but a guy, I know that they have a lot of excitement about some other names, obviously, that have been around for a while. But then you also talk about all the young guys coming in or that huge class of offensive linemen that come in this year. Had an opportunity to see Carson Nielsen in person from Waterloo West, a playoff game
Starting point is 00:18:26 against Waukee last football season, just absolutely eye-opening the way that he moved for a big guy a season ago. Obviously, him coming in, speaking of size, Hudson Parliament, one of the biggest guys on the roster at 6'4, 320 pounds. Gene Raarden comes in, Owen Linder. So a big class still have to develop, still have to build. But one thing that definitely steps up when you're looking at this group of freshman offensive line is just the sheer size that these guys have and just how big they have been
Starting point is 00:18:56 and how big they are in comparison to kind of the starter kits that we've seen in the past at that position. So that's where we are with the offensive line. I feel at minimum they're going to be solid. I don't know if they're going to be Joe Moore award winning. I think that's probably a pretty big take to jump aboard and think that they're going to take that kind of step forward, certainly this year. But I think they're going to be good. Peeper's development right away, that's going to be a big part of it also.
Starting point is 00:19:20 And if Jack Dotsler can take what he did a year ago, take that final step and really be a solid starter out there on the right side, they're going to be in good shape. You know, the running back position is stacked. They're really good there. Excited about what the wide receiver group possibly could be. Tight end looks like it's stacked up again. Oh, yeah. I forgot one position, though, offensively. That is quarterback, and that's what we wait for as we wait for April 25th in the open spring practice.
Starting point is 00:19:46 They get an opportunity to see that the two guys competing, Hank Brown and Jeremy Hecklinsky and what that's going to look like. But offensive line, at minimum, should be good. I think it's going to be even better than that. More on the transfer portal over on the basketball side. Some rumblings that Jan Jensen continues to hit it hard in the portal and some potential commitments right around the quarter. We'll talk about that. And the latest with a couple of big visitors on the Iowa men's side. We'll talk about that as we continue.

Got a cousin's wedding coming up over the weekend, excited about that. But we still got you covered and we will continue to bring you episodes,
Starting point is 00:22:48 including what should be maybe an eventful weekend coming up here for Iowa basketball. Let's start first on the men's side. And though no commitments at this point in time, one big story certainly at this point, though, is Andrew McKeever. He has finished up his visit in Iowa City. I guess if you want to be negative, you can point to, well, he didn't make his commitment while he was on campus. Look, there's some big time schools.
Starting point is 00:23:10 that are off after him. And sniffing around the Yukons, the Michigans of the world, I don't think any offers yet, but they're looking at him. 8 points, 9 rebound, 7 foot 3. We've talked plenty about McKeever. Definitely that rim protecting big that we've talked about kind of towards the top of the wish list along with the lead guard. And McKeever is up there.
Starting point is 00:23:30 We will see in terms of funds. I see a lot of this that, oh, Iowa, just little old Iowa, doesn't have the funds to compete. Are they at the upper echelon now? Are they like Louisville? that spends reportedly $9 million on two players. They're not swimming in those waters. But I was fine.
Starting point is 00:23:48 I was a good shape. Probably in a way, especially for a guy like McKeever with more and more programs getting involved, you might have to overpay, at least what you believe. But it's a zero-sum game. If you don't overpay for the guy and you don't have a guy that you like nearly as much on your list, well, if you don't get them, that's a problem.
Starting point is 00:24:06 Are they going to have to spend more? It's a possibility. but McKeever sounds like things went well on the visit. We'll see what visits are next for him for the St. Mary's transfer. The lead guard, Ace Glass the 3rd. We've talked about him a ton through throughout the course of the week. There was some things out there on social media that he had a visit already set up. Well, not to Iowa City.
Starting point is 00:24:27 It doesn't appear quite yet. What we do know, he is currently on a visit at Vanderbilt. According to On 3, he is currently on a visit to Vandy. So he'll be in Nashville here for a couple of days, potentially over the week. weekend. I'd anticipate that's when Iowa wants to try to get him in there. Still looks to be maybe at the front of the market for what I was going after. But I guess again, if you want to be negative, the negative thing is he's taking a visit somewhere else. We'll see though on Ace Glass, the Washington State transfer and how that translate. And then over on the women's side,
Starting point is 00:24:57 still no official commitment at this point in time. But a couple of names that we have talked about, including Amari Whiting from Oklahoma State. That is who people are speculating. maybe is making a commitment. Skim Mulkey. No, not Kim Mulkey, skim multi-molky. It is an online persona that has a lot of great information in the women's basketball realm, much like Trilly Donovan on the men's side.
Starting point is 00:25:24 That's on the women's side. And a lot of speculation that that has a possible commitment. Another one, Reagan McCowan from Western Illinois. A couple of new pieces out there. What I really like about our game, good defender. And we got all excited, obviously, about the commitment of Danny Carnegie for Jan Jensen Squad. That was absolutely great.
Starting point is 00:25:43 But what I also added, bolster obviously this lineup with something that can play a little bit on the defensive end of the floor, and that is definitely her. So we'll see if anything comes to fruition, anticipate. We're going to have some news on the women's front. Sounds like the signs are definitely pointing that that is the direction
Starting point is 00:25:59 that they're going to go. What I mentioned one final thing here on the women. So earlier in the week when we were talking about the women's basketball program, Graham, I talked about Jan Jensen, doing work in the portal and getting it done with the commitment of Carnegie is somebody brought up in the comment section over on YouTube, that credit to Jan, credit to Lassandra Barrett. And maybe not completely fair to Jan Jensen, the head coach that's got to seal the deal, but we absolutely have to give credit to Lassana Barrett.
Starting point is 00:26:29 And she had a really interesting tweet earlier. I think it was on Tuesday just talking about money and be careful and those kind of things that are out there. but she was the one that helped bring Chit Chat right in. She's the one that helps bring in Carnegie and definitely needs to be talked about. They lost a pretty big piece of that coaching staff. And to be able to,
Starting point is 00:26:49 what appears to be, absolutely hit her home run with Barrett. Love it. Absolutely love it and have to give that credit. So shout out to you on YouTube who brought that comment and completely fair. We have to give credit. Not just about the head coach. Got to remember those assistants. They're definitely
