Iowa football has a chance to have another good year in 2006,
but there's one position group that could derail the whole season,
and no, it's not quarterback.
You are Locked on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day.
I'm Trent Condon, and this is the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast.
Today's episode of Lockdown Hawkeyes is brought to you by Fandual.
Right now, new customers can bet just $5.
and get $150 in bonus bets if your first bet wins.
Head to Fandual.com to get started.
Well, a rough weekend overall for the Iowa baseball team.
They go over Nebraska with some hopes of getting a top 25 win.
They get swept away by the Huskers.
We'll be joined as well by Tom Kaker from hawkyeorport.com.
Get his perspective on all things.
Hawkeyes.
We'll talk some football.
We'll talk some basketball,
including who will be more widely remembered when we look back in their one year?
Mark Garnowski or Bennett Sturts.
But we begin today with some Iowa football talking.
Coming out of spring practice, we are going through the position groups
and talking about the different groups, what we've seen,
and what we anticipate going into August camp,
what these different groups are going to look like.
Today, we shift back over to the defensive side of the football,
and we go to defensive line.
And specifically, when I talk about the concerns about this football team,
I truly believe if defensive tackle is not figured out,
this could be a very frustrating year defensively.
And it's crazy to say because Iowa has just been so sound, so good.
Year after year, what they've been able to do at that position, at defensive tackle,
it has been so good.
The defensive line, you know, is going to be consistent.
And the defenses overall under Phil Parker have played at such a high level year and year
route that to think that there's going to be some kind of step back,
it doesn't maybe at times seem realistic.
But I think there's a real possibility here this season.
you graduate obviously a ton
from that defensive line a year ago.
And when you go into what it's going to look like
when camp starts again in August,
that defensive tackle position,
it's pretty concerning.
You start with the one guy that we know,
the guy that we saw in the middle a season ago
in Bryce Hawthorne.
Hawthorne last year got his feet wet,
making that transition up from South Dakota State,
still has two years of eligibility
and certainly looks to be on the path
that he is going to be solid.
Who's going to be next to him?
Who's going to be the guy that's going to
to be playing in that front. You got two guys that are former walk-ons, Will Hubert and Luke Gaffney,
that have been getting a lot of snaps. And then they went out there and they invested heavily
in the portal, but we just haven't seen much out of those guys to anticipate that they're going
to be able to hit the ground running and be ready to go because it's not just about your non-conference
schedule, not what Iowa has this year, opening with Northern Illinois, Iowa State, and then
you and I, all those games in Kinnick Stadium and what should be a very good solid start for the Hawkeyes
to open up the season. It's obviously what we talked about last week. And now this opening slate,
the condensed version that they have, the quick turnaround with the Washington game, first you go to
Michigan, you come back home for Ohio State, then you go on the road again with the short week
against Washington on a Friday night. It's as difficult as you're going to find the first three games
of the Big Ten. The first third of the season is as tough as anybody has in the Big Ten this season.
And you're going to have to do it really not knowing what's going to be happening in the middle.
mentioned those guys that came in out of the portal and start with Bryce Stevenson.
Another Bryce to go along with Bryce Hawthorne.
Stevenson comes in from Holy Cross.
Didn't get a ton of time during the spring.
And that makes it even more difficult to think that he's going to be stepping in there right away
and going to be able to even give you 40, 50 snaps a game even in a lesser role than that
to seeing what he's going to be able to provide.
Because as we talk about often, game in and game out, practice in and out, what they do
every single time. The boring things that it takes to be a defensive lineman for Iowa and specifically
playing in the middle of that defense in the 425 alignment, you have to occupy space. You have to take
on blockers. You have to do the things that are very fun. There's not an ability for guys to go out
and just do their own thing. You have to play sound assignment football if you're going to play
defensive line for Iowa. And these guys just have not had the reps. Also in the transfer portal,
they went out to North Dakota and got Emmanuel Alibajou.
Alibazu certainly looks apart.
And as Elliot Kluf told us last week, and he looks like Hulk, is he going to play like Hulk?
And we're going to see that.
He's got the size.
Both these guys come in at 295 pounds.
You're happy about that.
But can they do everything that has asked?
You got a couple of young guys also inside.
And I think probably the most intriguing for this season.
And it's really time now for the light ball to come on for Devin Kennedy.
He has got the bloodlines.
His dad played at Penn State.
His dad was a long-time NFL player in the middle.
His dad also had a little bit of size on him.
Debbie Kennedy's listed at 6-3-275 pounds.
And though Iowa's been able to get by in the past with undersized defensive tackles,
you definitely like to see the offseason click for him.
And here during the summertime, he'd be able to add some more weight
and get above that list to 275 and get closer to that 290-pound range
if he's going to be out there in a guy that is anticipated to take a step.
Yeah, but another guy that is, I think, intriguing is Brad Fitzgiven.
He comes in from over in Chicago Marist High School.
He's smaller on the smaller scale.
Speaking of that, listed at 6.3, 265 pounds.
But a guy with a lot of upside, a guy that's been talked about at times.
But again, at that kind of size, can he give you 15, 20 stamps a game?
Is that a realistic possibility of what you're looking on on that front?
I am confident on the outside that they're going to find a combination of guys
that they're going to be okay with on that defensive line.
When you talk about defensive ends, starting with Yose Afenessa,
632, the bloodlines we talk about, obviously, the size, the versatility,
everything that goes along with it.
It's going to be a learning process for Yose this season.
And another one that I don't think you're going to see in a full-time role.
We've seen that at times with different defensive ends specifically,
guys that are out there, 80% of the snaps or more.
I don't know if that's going to be the case for Yosei this season,
but he's going to be impactful.
You got Kenneth Meriwether back, and though he has not been also a guy in that line that has been out there in a full-time role.
We've seen him be a part of the rotation now the last couple of seasons, and he definitely has an ability to take a big step forward this year.
The other returning guy that continues to intrigue me, also in that same class as Devin Kennedy, when they brought in a bunch of defensive linemen that season is Joseph Anderson.
He just looks different.
He's got long arms, six foot six, 241 pounds, made a couple of plays in the open practice.
practice. Talk about upside. Maybe there's nobody on that defensive line that has even more upside than him. You also have Drew Campbell coming back and have an opportunity for him to take a step forward. Now, Campbell's a guy that has also been dealing with injury here during the early parts of his career, but you're waiting for that step forward. And with health, I think he's a guy that can definitely help them out. Jimmy Shanake, another guy that has been around now for a couple of seasons, waiting for him to start to pop there. And then speaking of the transfer portal, they went out, got Kamari
Brown, guy that got to the quarterback when he was at Elon, a guy that I think you point to and say,
definitely this can be a guy that can help out. Like I said, I think defensive end, they're going to
find enough. I think there's enough pieces there, enough mixing and matching that they can do to find
some guys that can get to the quarterback. I'd be good in the role that they ask. It's in the middle.
And if Iowa is not good in the middle of that defense, specifically at defensive tackle,
we've seen it before. Those are the years normally where Iowa takes a step back.
on the defensive side of the football.
And if that's the case, the offense has got a whole lot of work to do in front of them.
Coming up next, Tom Kakert, hawkeye report.com is going to join us.
We'll talk some basketball, we'll talk some football, a little recruiting,
and a little bit more coming up with Tom Kaker.
Plus, who had the best one year in Iowa City?
Was it Bennett Sturts with the basketball program?
Was it Mark Grunowski?
We'll talk about that next as we continue.
Stay right there.
This is Locked on Hawkeyes.
The NBA playoffs are here.
Every possession matters.
If you're looking to get even closer to the action,
Fanduel has a great offer to get you started.
Right now, new customers can bet $5 and get $150 in bonus bets if your first bet wins.
That's right.
Turn five bucks into $150 in bonus bets just getting started.
I like using Fandual during the playoffs because everything I need is in one place.
I love the live betting in the NBA playoffs.
It is my favorite sport to live bet, the wild swing,
the back and forth that has happened.
You saw it.
If you're watching on Sunday night
with the Timberwolves
and the Spurs with Wemby going down,
that definitely changed the complexion of game four.
You can check stats, trends,
matchups before making your picks,
makes a whole experience even more informed.
And the app super easy to navigate.
It makes playoff basketball
even more engaging from start to finish.
Speaking of that,
I jumped aboard with the Timberwolves
as they got it done in comeback fashion
in the fourth quarter.
Tying the series up at 2.0.
a piece. Now they go back to San Antonio.
Fanduel has the Spurs, a 10 and a half point favorite in game five.
Jump aboard with Fandul at Fanduel.com.
To get started, that's Fandual.com.
Fandual, play your game.
Trent, kind of back with you once again on the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast, your daily Iowa
Hawkeye podcast.
Thanks for being with us and making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day.
As we continue here, let's get into it.
Tom Kaker from Hoha,
Hawkeye Report.com will get Tom's perspective on all things Hawkeyes right now.
Yep.
Just real quick, because I want to forget this.
And yes, it's not today's news yet.
When's Seahawk going to be announced as far as game time?
Do you have any idea, Tom, when that's, it's normally like the middle of May, right?
Or third week in May?
We got a little soon, right?
It's, I think, like, third or fourth week of May is usually when we get it.
So I think we're a couple weeks away from it.
Right around Memorial Day, I think, is generally when we've gotten that.
But I'd have to look back and see.
But, yeah, we'll get like the first three games, plus we'll get the start time for Nebraska
and probably the homecoming game.
I don't even know what homecoming game is this year.
I don't even know.
I don't even know.
But, yeah, some of the, I'm glad I waited on my plane reservations for one.
I know usually I would have been flying in on a Friday,
but I waited because I was probably leaning in towards going in on Thursday
to see some friends up there and spend an extra day or whatever.
And now I have to go in on Thursday.
Homecoming would either be Wisconsin or Purdue.
Purdue is probably too late.
It's in November, right?
And that's usually the veterans game that they have there in November.
So Wisconsin?
You're not going to do it for Ohio State.
I wouldn't think so.
You want to have an appointment.
Halloween.
Halloween.
Halloween homecoming.
Ooh, that'd be a fun.
on one. Yeah. Well, that's the Wisconsin game. It's the 31st. Wow.
Calls on that one. Well, the news of today, it is a Friday night affair for Iowa as they travel out to Washington.
You have the most difficult part of your schedule all compacted together. Your three most difficult games all in a row, two of them on the road here.
And on top of it, your longest road trip of the season, Tom, and now you have to do it. Go out to Washington and do it on a short week.
going up against one of the best teams in the country of the week before in Ohio State.
Who did Kirk Farrant's piss off?
Yeah, somebody.
And I throw in that, you know, Iowa under Farrant's hasn't won a road game in the Western time zone ever in his tenure.
Well, he's new.
Yeah, the Holiday Bowl, you know, doesn't really count because that was a neutral game.
That was the final game in that stadium, right?
the old Jack Murphy?
And the old Jack Murphy, the old Jack Murphy before they,
and I don't think they played the game the next year.
I don't think they did.
And they tore that thing down.
And boy, that was a relic.
That was like, I'll never forget the video board in that stadium.
It was like an Atari video game or something.
It was just, you know, it was just so ancient and out of date.
and they just had the, yeah, that place was not a great stadium.
But anyway, yeah, I'll give you a preview of my fearless forecast,
which will come out July 4th again.
I'm not picking Iowa to win at Washington.
I'm done picking them on the West Coast until they proved me wrong.
Try to tell you that with the UCLA game a couple years ago.
You wouldn't listen to me.
I know, I didn't listen to Trent.
Yep.
Well, every once in a while, you know,
should, his picks are in every,
Hey, the last two days,
you're on the fire.
The last two days have been good.
The blind squirrel finds an eight.
Absolutely.
Don't look back at the last 30 days before that.
It doesn't paint a really good picture when we go back that far.
Tom, we get to the basketball here in a moment.
This team coming out of spring,
we talked a lot with you after what you got to see in the open practice.
They're just so young.
I think, what, 10 seniors on this team?
I've never heard of coach.
we've also been listening to a coach for 27 years that talks more about leadership than Kirk Farrants.
It's not just coaching cliches.
It is important for this program.
Should that be a bigger concern?
Just the lack of true experience and senior leadership on this squad coming into the season.
And I didn't really realize that until recently, to be honest, because I just started to dive in.
I was like, holy cow, they've got 10 seniors and none of them are like, boy, you could look back like last year and think,
Yeah, Logan Jones and all these guys are Kirkett and Maxwellan and, you know, even Shire and
and Jaden Harrell guys that have been programmed guys for a long, long time, Wampa, all those guys,
just core, core guys that have started multiple years and been in the program forever.
And this year, it's like, who's the senior leader on this team?
Well, I don't know.
Des Sean Lee, you know, because Lutmer's,
the junior, you know, it's just, there's just not a natural face of the program guy in that senior class.
You know, Addison Ostranga, I don't know. It's an interesting mix this year, and they're going to have to rely on some of these third-year guys, third-and-and-fourth-year guys that have bredshirted to really become the leaders of this team.
And I think that's one of the bigger challenges for this team this year is to develop that leadership.
Plus, you don't have like a multiple-year starter at quarterback either.
So you don't have that to lean on.
Or Grinowski coming in who's just, you know, kind of this mature veteran guy that's been through the wars and been through the battles.
You don't have that either.
So it's a really interesting team.
Really is, you know, 10 years from now.
I can't wait to see the poll because I think it's too soon to do now.
Grinowski or Sturts, who would you rather have for an additional year?
You got to get past the basketball and the lead aid and obviously what Grinowski did.
And football rules the ruse.
It's a football state.
But I mean, I'm not diminishing the basketball fans by any means.
I just think it football moves the needle a tad more.
But in 10 years to do that poll as to how people would remember that one year for both, Tom.
It's an interesting question.
Who had a better one year?
wasn't Kronowski or was it Sturts?
I almost think you have to say Sturts just because they took them to a place that they had been for 40 years or whatever.
Yep.
Yep.
No doubt.
Ben McCollum,
we took him there,
is going to get a six-year deal.
I don't know if it's signed sealed delivered yet,
but at all accounts,
it's done.
And it's just a matter of,
you know,
putting a pen to paper,
apparently.
We talked about it,
Tom.
We thought it was going to happen.
And then a couple of weeks ago,
I think I asked you if you've heard of any movement on it,
because it hadn't been made official yet.
But by all accounts, it's all done.
And Ben McCollum's not going anywhere.
Well, hopefully.
My sense is just not really talking to a whole lot of people,
but just knowing what coaches are looking for now,
it's not even really about their own years and their own salary.
What coaches are looking for is assurances on NIL.
How much are you going to continue to give me?
I can't win.
I can't win if I don't have 15.
million dollars or whatever it is for for college basketball teams now what would we see like
goodman and duster were talking about like 20 to 25 million a year for for um you know to to
compete and at least i mean dusty may was talking about more than 15 million or something or 20
million it's crazy but um you know that's that's the it's what you got to do to go out and get players
I can't imagine what Louisville spent.
You know, that's where Alvaro landed.
And just, you know, because, you know,
for the Dungo was going to get $5 million.
And I think Alvaro is over three, probably, from what I understand.
So, I mean, that's eight right there on two players.
And I'm guessing Shelstedt got three, four million dollars.
And that Knox kid got probably three to four.
I mean, that's incredible what they're spending on their roster.
That's Kentucky kind of numbers.
Big, big money out there, big, money.
We anticipate coming Ben McCollum's way.
Any idea, it's, I'm sure at this point just guesswork,
but the buyout was at a potential sticking point.
Because we knew this was going to happen as the season finished up
in the way, obviously, the run that they made in the NCAA tournament,
any guess of maybe some of the things that are most important to you
when we actually get our hands on this contract?
Yeah, I'm curious if it says anything about the NIL.
I don't know that it will.
I don't know that it will, but the buyout, because, I mean, you know, you look at PJ and Ames.
I mean, his buyout's really low.
You know, it's like $4 million.
That's, you know, at a power for school, one of the power two conferences, that's money that probably falls out of the pocket of that athletic department.
They lose it in the sofa.
Yeah.
You know, they can pay that pretty easily.
It gives him some flexibility.
But that's, you know, with a coach.
like TJ and probably with like with Ben they can say hey just keep my buyout low you know if I
want a balance I can bounce and not that I think either of those guys want to bounce but uh especially
ben because Ben was pretty honest about it towards the end of the year where like I'm not interested
in leaving my family's had to uprooted itself two years in a row and uh happy wife happy life we all know
this yeah just don't want to move again you know you just don't so
we kind of knew he was going to stay and I think he's pretty comfortable at Iowa.
And I think it puts pressure on both schools, Tom, because if the biode is so low,
it puts pressure on the school to live up to the commitment that they've made pursuant to NIL.
Absolutely.
Absolutely.
The other thing I wonder about sometimes is, and I know some people have kind of thrown this out there,
Ben McCollmore next step like an NBA, more than college, maybe?
I don't know.
Interesting one.
Yeah, I hope he's in Iowa for decades.
I don't know.
You know, Dusty May is getting.
Yeah, he is.
You're right.
Yep.
Yep, no doubt.
How that style fits.
And we know that guy, he is a different level, certainly, of basketball.
Speaking of basketball, we anticipated this.
We mentioned it last week.
Donovan Davis made his announcement to Iowa State, a guy that Iowa had made the
final five for his services.
That will not be the case.
What can you tell us in high school basketball recruiting?
I know you've mentioned before that Iowa feels like.
they're in good shape for some point guard prospects.
What's the latest on the recruiting front?
Yeah, we just got a story up, Jamie Shaw from on three.
I had a story up today about Caden Daughtry,
who's really kind of down to four schools
and just had some incredible quotes about Iowa,
just how much he, you know,
watching in their development of point guards
and mentioned Bennett and just the program and anything, everything.
So he is, he seems to be their top guy right now.
Jackson Davis is another kid to watch.
But Daughtry, number 17 overall player in the rivals rankings, 6-2 guard from Florida,
talked to an in-state kid who plays in the YBL at the Nike League,
who played against Caden Daughtry in their first thing,
and he just raped about the guy.
And he's like, he just domic.
dominates the game as a guard and just makes plays and it's just so tough.
So I think that might be the guy that they feel like they've got the best shot with,
but he's also Miami's in there and, you know, that Jai Lucas is doing a really good job,
recruiting players there and Michigan right there.
So in Florida State.
So he's got some good schools looking at it right now.
Creighton and Iowa, downtown Des Moines, middle of November.
Do you know Tom?
How about that?
Yeah, that's great.
whose home game would it be?
And I guess where I'm going is, would that be a Big Ten network?
If I was the home game, do you have any details on the TV that come with that game?
I don't.
I haven't seen anything about TV, but, you know, that's a good thing is it's a home football weekend.
So it's Purdue that weekend.
So you can just kind of zip over to Des Moines after the game and get ready for some hoops the next day.
So they've got, it seems like Ben might be doing more of these kind of one-off neutral site games or I know they, they owe Xavier a road game.
I believe they've got to go to Cincinnati and play.
And I'll have this game.
So, you know, I remember I talked to Ben last November when we were out in Palm Springs about like their MTE for the next year.
And they tried to get into that players.
era tournament out in Vegas.
And the players era people just tell them, yeah, we're not interested in you.
And then I know it's wild.
They just like, hey, they weren't, maybe they'd be interested now.
I would hold a list of schools.
Yeah.
I saw a list of schools and they're not on them, but Rutgers is.
Yeah.
So.
And is UNLV on there just because it's in Vegas has to be, right?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Throw them a bone.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I don't think, I don't think, I don't think, I don't think, I don't think,
every school gets the same amount of money.
No, Kansas gets the most.
I did see that. Kansas comes away
with more than anybody, which
I mean, there's some big name schools out there.
Some big name programs in Kansas.
I get at their basketball school, but, you know,
nonetheless. Yeah, they get the money and then
they miss spend the money apparently lately.
There's a lot easier when not everybody was spent in for the Jayhops.
Imagine that trend. It's interesting, isn't it?
USC football kind of the same way. Yeah, it's wild how this is
changing, isn't it? Hey, Tom, I got one final thing
for you. Iowa baseball. They wrap up
the season on the road. They go to Nebraska this week, starting tonight against the top 25
Huskers, and then back here in Des Moines next weekend with Purdue coming to the Capitol City.
Still good opportunity for them, obviously, to get into the Big Ten tournament, but what's it
going to take short of winning the Big Ten tournament for them to be an NCAA tournament team?
I think their RPI is 78 today. They've got to win five out of six and get to the championship
of the Big Ten tournament. Is that kind of the hole that they've dug themselves into?
you? Yeah, I think they've got to make a tremendous run.
And to do that, you know, Nebraska's ranked 25th.
They've been scuffling a little bit lately.
Okay.
Purdue's had a, Purdue's had a pretty good season, but I was playing better baseball.
You know, they won two of three against Illinois.
They swept Indiana, you know, two of three against Maryland.
So they've kind of rebounded from those, that.
rough stretch where the, you know,
USC, UCLA and, and such,
where they,
they kind of got beaten up on.
But,
um,
honestly,
it's kind of remarkable that they're going to even make the big
tournament,
given all the injuries to the pitching staff this year with three
other better pitchers,
uh,
either sounds like the Cubs.
Yeah.
It sounds like the Cubs.
I mean,
you know,
but look at what the Cubs are doing.
Yes.
That's working.
Yeah.

So we saw what happened against Nebraska over the weekend.
We're going to talk a little bit about that, Iowa, getting into the big tent tournament.
And what lies ahead?
Little Iowa baseball talk to wrap things up.
We continue.
Stay right there.

Well, Lockdownhawkeyes.
Dot supercast.com is the website.
That is Lockdownhawkeyes.
dot supercast.com. Iowa sits in the ninth place in the big 10 at 12 and 15.
500 mark going into the weekend, but three consecutive losses at the hands of Herbie Husker
means that Iowa still is going to be in the Big Ten tournament.
They have locked up a spot in the Big Ten tournament.
They are fine there, but not going the way you'd certainly hope down the stretch.
And then a big series coming up at the end of the season, Purdue currently in a tie for fourth place
the Big Ten. UCLA took their first loss of the season over the weekend in Big Ten play.
They already had things locked up, though, with the regular season crown for UCLA.
Number one for most of the season this year.
We saw just how good that UCLA team is here a little more than a month ago.
Nebraska sits in the number two spot.
USC at three, Oregon and Purdue tied for fourth.
That's who the Hawkeyes will see this weekend coming up at the I-Cubs ballpark in downtown
Des Moines again at Principal Park.
Michigan 6, Ohio State 7, Illinois, and there's the Hawkeye sitting in ninth place.
Now, they're a game ahead of Minnesota, Rutgers, and Washington.
What you want to do, obviously, keep that separation.
Keep yourself as high as you can on the way that it's set up.
But it's an interesting setup this year in the Big Ten tournament.
It's going to be a little bit of a change.
We'll talk about that a little bit more later in the week and the structure of this one.
But as we talked about with Tom going into that series against Nebraska,
maybe an outside chance if Iowa could have won that series against Nebraska,
could have swept against Purdue, potentially getting in large.
That's off the table now.
I was going to have to win the Big Ten tournament in order to be an NCAA tournament team.
And that is going to be difficult.
The definitely is taking a hit in the pitching staff.
They can swing it.
And they definitely did that in the Saturday game when they put up 11 on the board.
The problem, well, they gave up 15.
And when that happens, you're going to be in trouble.
Got knocked off Friday night, 10, nothing in eight.
1511 L on Saturday and then 8-6 on Sunday as they drop all three against the Huskers.
So got an opportunity and Rick Keller does it again back in the Big Ten tournament for Iowa,
where they are financially in comparison for a baseball program to a lot of other teams
that certainly a lot to be excited about for Iowa baseball and Rick Heller getting them back once
again. We're going to take that and we are going to wrap things up here on your Monday
edition of Lockdown Hawkeyes. Thanks for being with this as always and making lots
on Hawkeyes, your first listen every day.
