Starting point is 00:00:00 Everyone's talking about the Hawkeye defense and some of the issues that may crop up this season. Maybe a jump out of the offense in 2006. But what about the special teams? Miss field goals, shaky returns, punting regression for a program built on hidden yardage. This could be a mess of warning side. You are Locked on Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day. I'm Trent Condon and this is the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast.
Starting point is 00:00:39 Thanks for making Lockdown Hawkeyes, your first listen every day. Today we're going to break down the Iowa baseball team completing their regular season with a sweep of Purdue who came in fourth in the Big Ten and the final season of the series, excuse me, of the regular season. We'll talk about that. Plus the bracket is set now for the Big Ten tournament. We'll take a look at the path for the Hawkeyes and what they have to do to punch their ticket to the NCAA tournament.
Starting point is 00:01:03 We'll be joined as well by Tom Kaker from hawkeye report.com. We'll get Tom's perspective, some basketball recruiting, non-conference scheduling, and we'll talk some football as well with Tom coming up here before we wrap up. But we begin today with our post-spring practice look at special teams. And we've gone through position by position, a lot of the different groups. We talked about all sides of the defense from what Phil Parker has put together on that, back five of the defense and the defensive backfield, and it very well could be a strength.
Starting point is 00:01:33 the hope that we're going to see big jump forward out of the linebacker group, including Cam Buffington, who could be a star this season for the Iowa Hawkeyes in the middle of that Iowa defense. And, of course, the questions that we have up front and specifically at defensive tackle. We've gone through the offense. We talked about the pieces over there. But one thing we haven't talked a whole lot after spring practice wrapped up is the special teams. And we know the importance, obviously, of special teams throughout the years when you go through
Starting point is 00:02:02 and you look at what this program does, the way that they're able to sustain high level wins year after year after year. A big part of what they do is inside the special teams. And of course, you go first and the loss of LeVar Woods. You lose your special teams coordinator. That is going to be impactful, a guy that took the Iowa special teams to another level.
Starting point is 00:02:24 I mean, we go back before they have that dedicated full-time coach. And I go back to the early 2010s and in that range where there were some issues there. And we saw coverages that struggled at times. We saw issues in the putting and kicking game. Go back a couple of seasons where they really struggled in that front, mostly in the putting game, but overall,
Starting point is 00:02:45 we have just grown so accustomed to having great special teams. You lose your coordinator out of that. And then you couple it with who they lost from this past season. And you look at what they've been able to do here recently in the kicking game. Year after year after
Starting point is 00:03:00 year, I mean, you just look through what I was done here recently in the kicking position and just how many good kickers have come through here over the last 15 years. I mean, we all talk about obviously Nate Cating going back to the early 2000s, what he was in a long time career at the NFL, how good he was with the Iowa program. But here on the recent front from Keith Duncan, Drew Stevens here over the last, what, seven years we've seen both of those guys out there competing at a high level. Caleb Shudak, who stuck around and got his final year. Miguel Rosinos, I mean, there's been so many good ones. Mike Meyer. We're talking about just a host of great kickers throughout the years.
Starting point is 00:03:37 Kyle Schlichter going back after Cating. We have seen so many good ones. And now it is going to be up to either Eli Ozick, who comes in from North Dakota State or Caden Burr, a local kid from the state of Iowa that's going to be competing for that job. And we didn't get to see Burr compete at the open practice here a few weeks ago now. And it looks like OZick is, I think, the favorite for this job. does look like probably the guy that is going to be the heir apparent at that spot. He's got two years of eligibility, but it's a transition up. And the leg talent that we saw from Drew Stevens, I think we have to anticipate there's going to be a step back from that
Starting point is 00:04:13 because Drew Stevens absolutely had a rocket of a right foot that he was able to pound the ball and the distance that he was able to get kickoffs as well. That was a strong component for him. That's going to be different this season. Then you lose your punter from the last couple of seasons. And though Reese Dakin wasn't great, filling the shoes of Tori was going to be incredibly difficult. Would you take over a generational talent like Tori Taylor? I think we thought there were going to be some growing pains.
Starting point is 00:04:43 There definitely was. But even this year, the consistency just was not there out of Reese Dakin. Can they take a step forward from what we saw this year? I think it's possible. And that's maybe a spot where, speaking of hit at yardage, you can get a little bit more out of the punting game this year. Tanner Philpott comes in after being at Simpson, talk about a big transition. One thing going to North Dakota State to Iowa,
Starting point is 00:05:05 it's another from going from D3 Simpson and playing in the old Iowa conference to what we see there. That's going to be different, no doubt about it. And he's competing with Boston Everett, who comes in another Australian punter that makes his way over. Still, this is incredibly young guy, a guy that's never played in a real football game before. That has to be something that you worry about.
Starting point is 00:05:25 Even when you take it a step further and you look at the snapping dude, And, you know, they went out a year ago. You remember the snap that went over the head in the Oregon game, gave him two points in an incredibly close game when Iowa had the ducks on the ropes. You think how different maybe that game could have played out as special teams struggled early on in the rain against the Oregon earlier this season. You got that component. Is it going to be Ike Speltz? Is he going to be the long snapper for this season?
Starting point is 00:05:51 Not a big guy by any means. And then, of course, the return game. And he lose another generational talent in Caden, Weech and what he was able to do. here over the last three seasons as a returner in and just exploding this season. So, you're replacing the coordinator that put it all together, your kicker, your punter, and your return man, a lot of work that needs to be done. Is there going to be a spot for Zach Lutmer? Is he going to be the guy back there at the punt return spot?
Starting point is 00:06:19 That sounds like a real possibility, what they do at kick return, and maybe getting some speed out there, doing some different things there. It is big, big shoes to feel, Phil, no doubt about it. And this is one of those things where Iowa historically year after year plays in so many close games. And if those special teams just are not even above average because that's what Iowa needs, this could be a problem for Iowa football definitely this season. Come back on the other side, a lot of Hawkeye talk with Tom Kaker. We're going to talk basketball, both on the men's and the women's side.
Starting point is 00:06:50 We'll get a recruiting update with Tom was earlier on Friday over in Indiana just outside of South Bend, watching some AAU basketball, has got a new name for us. on the point guard recruiting front. We'll get into that coming up with Tom Kekert from Hawkeye Report. We'll talk about the new additions for Jan Jensen Squad and some Iowa football as well with Tom. That's all as we continue. Stay right there. This is Locked on Hawkeyes.

Starting point is 00:08:20 Join at RocketMoney.com slash Lockdown. That's rocketmoney.com slash lockdown. Trent, kind of back with you once again on the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast. for being with us and making lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day. We are your daily Iowa Hawkeye podcast. Let's go right now to Tom Kaker, joining us from hawkai report.com.
Starting point is 00:08:45 Indiana, just out south, South Bend, Tom. That's where I understand you are. Good to talk to you. What are you covering over there? An AAU basketball event, is that it? Yeah, Adidas has one of their events, and this is a live weekend for coaches. It's the only live weekend of May
Starting point is 00:08:59 that they can be out watching these things. So it's been kind of, while because I walk in and I see Matt Gaten and then I see Tristan Spurlock. I see Andrew Francis. I saw these guys coached Iowa over the years wandering around. So and Connor Wheeler from Ben McCollum staff is here watching and just got done watching a four-star point guard that likes Ben McCollum. Tell us a little bit about this four-star because Iowa's been heavily involved with a
Starting point is 00:09:32 couple of them. The Doherty kid maybe at the top of the list, Caden Doherty, but tell us about the recent one that you've seen and just overall where Iowa is in that point guard recruiting for the class of 27. Yeah, I think there's like three of them that they're really in pretty good shape with. And the one that I talk to is Antonio Pemberton and he's really talented kids from East Coast area and he really, he's about six foot, explosive as heck. So I'm trying to dunk on like a 610 guy today. And I was like, what was this? You know, and he can jump out of the gym.
Starting point is 00:10:11 And I could see him playing for Ben completely and talked to him just after the game that just got done. And he said, so what did you think of their lead run? And he goes, I was texting with Coach McCollum through the whole thing. and just talking about how he sees his vision for me in the program, and he's planning on hopefully making an official visit by this fall. So I think they're definitely in the running with him, along with Marquette, Chaka Smart was sitting courtside watching this game.
Starting point is 00:10:44 So I think those are maybe two of his top schools off of Boston College. It's in the mix now, too, with Luke Murray in charge of that program. But before we go on, I got a couple of other things. I wonder what other coaches are there. Just got this note from Sam Burnaby. Iowa is in town, the baseball team down at Principal Park to play Purdue. With the pending weather tonight, the game has moved up 90 minutes. First pitch was scheduled for 630.
Starting point is 00:11:10 First pitch is now going to be, let me get this right, moving to 5 o'clock from 630. Gates will open at 4.30. There's no pregame signing tonight because of the fact that they're moving everything up. So if you got a ticket to go to Principal Park to see the Hawkeyes and Purdue do battle. First pitch is now 5 o'clock at Principal Park because of pending weather. Mike, Tom, how about some other guys, coaches-wise? Any big names that have passed by you? Anybody you've noticed that happens to be attending the event?
Starting point is 00:11:46 I haven't really noticed that head coaches or it seems like everybody's not at Nike and Memphis today. So that's where Ben's at, Ben McCollum's down there. T.J's down there, I would assume, saw new assistant for Iowa State, Tim Buckley, who was an Iowa assistant for a year under Steve Alford. He's here today, too. So a lot of the assistant coaches are here today, not as many of the head coaches. Interesting. So basketball recruiting this offseason, a lot of talk about the non-conference scheduling.
Starting point is 00:12:19 Of course, the Big Ten schedule came out this week. Yeah. The three double plays for Iowa, Wisconsin, Ohio State, and the traditional one now with Nebraska. The road slate looks incredibly difficult. What about non-conference scheduling? What could you tell us on that front? Because there's been a lot of rumblings about a potential, maybe even a home-and-home with an SEC team. Yeah, there's been some of those rumblings.
Starting point is 00:12:40 I don't think anything's been finalized yet, from what I understand. There's some talk, but they're probably going to play, you know, one of those type of games, with the Iowa State game and you've got, so that the Xavier return date too, that they've got to do. And then the Creighton game at the Casey Center. And I think that would probably be close to about it. From what I understand, they're not going to do.
Starting point is 00:13:08 It sounds like Thanksgiving tournament possibilities are on life support. So it doesn't seem like that. I don't know if I told you the guys this story like last November, remember when they were out in Palm Springs for the event that they played in last year, there I asked Ben McCollum, I said, do you have a plan for next year where you want to play for a Thanksgiving tournament? And asked them about,
Starting point is 00:13:33 did you inquire about maybe getting involved with players era? Thinking that would be like something that they might want to get into. And because, yeah, they weren't interested in us. Really? I think that, yeah, last year in November, of course, they weren't interested. But now,
Starting point is 00:13:48 now they're probably like, well, we'd love to have Iowa instead of having, Rutgers or whoever else in this tournament. Relegate, relegate Rutgers. Let's do it. Yeah, they, I know that's something that they wanted to get into, but, you know, it looks like the field's kind of set. And I think they've allocated like eight of the slots or something to big 12 teams or something.
Starting point is 00:14:11 So it's, you know, it's just hard to get into it. Maybe they will, but it's just hard to, like Maui, you can't go to Maui anymore because it's a loss leader. You just lose money going to Maui. So just can't do it. Is McCollum finding difficulty finding buy games because of the fact that Iowa success last year? Is he having trouble getting opponents?
Starting point is 00:14:32 I don't think so. I think they'll fill out their schedule pretty easily. I think he wants to fill out the tough games before he fills out his entire buy slate. You know, just to kind of, you can fill it out. He loves taking his time with the schedule stuff. I mean, I don't think they find a lot. stuff until like September last year with some of those games. Tom, I got to tell you because you know my thoughts on scheduling and I yelled about the
Starting point is 00:14:58 RPI for years and the way free and scheduled. And that changed with the net system. So last year about this time, I had an interview with McCollum. And after we wrapped up the 15, 20 minutes on my podcast, we just started, you know, talking. And he found out how big of a scheduling nerd I am. And we sat there and we talked for 20 minutes off the record just about scheduling like about manipulation of the net,
Starting point is 00:15:20 what you could do, just different things. There is going to be, I will tell everybody out there, any angst for Hawkeye fans, he knows to a T exactly what he's doing, what the schedule is. And it goes back to last year. You mentioned being there in Palm Springs.
Starting point is 00:15:35 He demanded that they play Old Miss in that first game. And if they did not get to play a power conference team in that first round, because that's not how they wanted set up. They wanted Old Miss Iowa in the championship. He said, we need the guarantee of a podcast. or we're going to pull out. This was not my contract and we're going to pull out. He is going to have this thing figured out. And it's probably not going to be shiny. But those buy games,
Starting point is 00:15:56 even the ones that you look at and you kind of roll your eyes, there's going to be a method to the madness here with McCullum. Starting point is 00:17:03 He understands how to manipulate that net ranking and to get it up higher. And that's how he's going to schedule his teams. Now, I was talking to somebody about that on staff. the other day and they're just like, yeah, it didn't work out for us because old miss was terrible. Until the SEC tournament. Yeah, until the SEC tournament, they, they were like, would they finish like 12th or 13th in the SEC last year?
Starting point is 00:17:33 It was bad. And then they, you know, caught fire late. But, and Green Canyon was always going to be like a Q2 at best win just because of the conference. So they've got to, he's got to figure out. He knows what he's doing. one. When it comes to the Creighton game in Des Moines, do you know who's going to get the TV rights for that one? Is that going to be a great question? I don't know. I would guess how it's going to be on the Big Ten network, but maybe maybe Creighton has a TV rights.
Starting point is 00:18:04 Is it an Iowa home game? It might be an Iowa home game. I don't know. They may be designated as the home team, just, but I'm not sure. And it could be a return trip over to Omaha, maybe in the future. That could be potentially something. Then they get the TV right. Well, that's the thing, though. And that's where the slippery slope is, as we found out with Duke trying to sell off that are neutral games. It's not like it once was. And yes, this is both considered Iowa and Creighton territory.
Starting point is 00:18:33 Do you make it that direction? What that's going to be. And don't be surprised down the road if Iowa and Creighton want to play a game, and they play outside the area, they play in Las Vegas, and then you can sell it to an Amazon. If this all goes through for Duke, the way we know non-conference scheduling, not just for basketball, but football is going to be changing Tom.
Starting point is 00:18:52 And for that, because the conference then doesn't have their hand in the pie? Absolutely. You play, like we heard for years, Iowa, Notre Dame. They tried to get that game. Jamie Pollard said, we're not going to take a one-year hiatus for the Sighawk game, so it never came to fruition. Good for Jamie Pollard. Soldier Field, awful lot of Jamie Pollard, different conversation.
Starting point is 00:19:09 We'll argue about that another time. I've never said good for Jamie Ballard, very seldom. That's true. That's true. Soldier Field. Well, of course, that's still considered Big Ten territory. You put that game in Las Vegas, though, you can sell it to a Netflix. I think the way, Tom, that we see, we talk so much about basketball scheduling.
Starting point is 00:19:28 The way that we know football scheduling, though, I think we're going to be going back to the days, like, the early 2000s, all those neutral site games. I think we're going to be seeing a whole lot more of that. You feel in the same way? Yes. Kickoff Klanthik, Iowa, Tennessee, 1987. East Rutherford, a pitch that gets taken back the other way, huh? I remember it vividly. Yeah, 1988.
Starting point is 00:19:49 Yeah, 1987. Later that East Rutherford. And who had the TV for that one? It had to be. ABC? Had to have been. CBS, it was a big one. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:59 Oh, that's absolutely. I think it was CBS. It wasn't Raycom. It wasn't Raycom. Jefferson Pilot. Oh, back in the day. Good stuff. Speaking of football, Tom, any news coming out of the football program you can share?
Starting point is 00:20:14 Nothing really. He's been pretty quiet. You know, they're wrapping up things, and the guys will get to go home, and then they'll come back for workouts, you know, coming up. One thing I have heard on the basketball front that might be interesting for your local listeners is Trump and Yurak has really been impressive
Starting point is 00:20:34 since they got back to workouts, and they really think that something's brewing with him, that he can really, really help them. this coming season. So it would be cool to see something really go. Maybe I jokingly said, maybe they'll go with the
Starting point is 00:20:54 true twin towers. Maybe they'll go 7-3-7 foot up front. He's got an offensive skill set that'll work. Can he get there defensively? That's still the question. What is your feet work with it?
Starting point is 00:21:06 Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. Just getting quicker. That's going to be the big part of it. But his offensive skill set, he'll have Valley's senior year and assist. You don't see that at the high school level for a team certainly that good as Valley was during those seasons that has guys like Jay Robinson in the back court and some of the guys that were played alongside of them. You know, I asked McCollum about him last week because he was in West Des Moines for the Pau County
Starting point is 00:21:27 I Club. He said at the time, Trevin's different right now. You could tell the excitement that he was hearing out of him. And I heard another clip with him earlier this week, I think at another eye club event saying just that the skill set is definitely there. The question for me about this team going into the year, what does that backport look like? is it hitting the keys off to kale combs and we'll bring Coleman after the transfer from the MVC along a little bit slowly because they're going to be good up front.
Starting point is 00:21:52 They got dudes. They got power forwards. They got a bunch of pieces there. How does the backcourt shake out in your mind? Yeah, that's going to be the interesting thing. And I would not put it past Tate Sage to play some point guard this year because he can play that. He thinks he's a point guard too.
Starting point is 00:22:10 And the other thing with McCollum, you notice this. and he's going to continue to do this. He's going to keep collecting guys that are like 6-6-6-9, 6-10 that can do different things and all of them can maybe do a little bit of a different thing. One guy might be more defensive,
Starting point is 00:22:26 specialist that can get you stopped. Another guy might be like a Cooper Koch who can just shoot it and then, you know, do all those things. So he's going to keep collecting these guys with links that he can plug and play and kind of at 2-4 spots that you can,
Starting point is 00:22:43 just kind of rotate all these different pieces in there and do different things. Any news on banks? Nothing yet. I just don't think that thing's going to happen. And I think I even think if it does, I'm not sure that he'd even be back. Okay. You know, he might find someplace else to go even if it does happen. So that's just my gut feeling right now.
Starting point is 00:23:08 I don't think there's going to be anything that happens, though. And what does McKeever get here? Do you know? I would guess early June. Yeah. I went to the NBA combine this week and talked to Bennett and asked Bennett about McKeever and he goes, he's got the biggest cans I've ever seen in my entire life. He's like he swallowed me up. Big old miss.
Starting point is 00:23:32 That is exciting. Well, not a big player, but maybe a helpful player for Jan Jensen squad. And that is Brea Medina, who comes in the all-time leading score at Knox College over in Galesburg. but it's a jump from the D3 level, not just a D1 to Big 10 D1. What have you heard about Medina at minimum? Can she be a piece for six to ten minutes a game? And then also the Swedish freshman that's coming over.
Starting point is 00:23:56 I'll help it Stromdahl. My Swedish is not very good. Did the Jen go over there to get that seal that deal? Do you know? I don't know if she sent somebody over there. She sent Lassandra over there because Lassandra is the one that's kind of talked about recruiting that area. but the other part of the world.
Starting point is 00:24:13 So I think maybe that's her work more than it was, Jan's. But I think both of them are just kind of preserve pieces that they're going to need to give them five to seven minutes a game and hopefully help them out. You know, with them Dina maybe a shooter that can come in and make a couple shots and do some things offensively and not hurt too defensively. But that's a pretty good story. Knox College, oh, I drive by there on my way down to. St. Louis to see my in-laws all the time. And you never thought you'd find a future Iowa player at Knox College. And yet here we are the all-time leading score after just three years at Knox College.
Starting point is 00:24:53 So Jan, done? Yeah, I think she's done. I think she is. I think they've got their roster now. Unless something falls out of the sky that you just can't turn away from. Yeah, I think she's probably, I think they've got the roster. Good stuff, Tom Kaker. Enjoy Indiana, and we will talk with you next Friday.

Starting point is 00:26:25 Three out of three for Iowa's. They get the sweep against Purdue. Purdue came in in the top four of the Big Ten coming in, but not the case afterwards as Iowa gets it done. So Iowa earns the number nine seed in the Big Ten tournament. They will be opening things up. Game two of the tournament coming up on the 19th,
Starting point is 00:26:43 just a couple days away from that one. is that will start on Tuesday. They'll take on Illinois on Tuesday. Then they can go 2 and O. They win their first two games. They will move on to the single elimination bracket. Eight teams will be there. On the front side of things,
Starting point is 00:26:59 a double elimination bracket for Iowa, even if they fall at Illinois. Still a chance for them to battle back and get into the main bracket, if you will, where it becomes single elimination. They would move on. If they go 2 and 0,
Starting point is 00:27:12 they would face USC, the number four seed, if they do that, and a lot of different maturations of the bracket. We'll talk about that a little bit more as we get closer to that on a likely Monday or Tuesday show. But another great work. They already had solidified themselves in the Big Ten tournament, had already clinched going into that series.
Starting point is 00:27:30 But getting it done, it's not like there were some good crowds on hand at Principal Park and finishing things up as they've done the last couple of years, having those series in Des Moines and getting people here in the Capitol City around Iowa baseball. Rick Keller has done just great work here after year after. gear with this Iowa baseball team and fun to watch what he's doing on a shoestring budget compared to a lot of the brethren in the Big Ten and just the consistent winning that Rick Keller does. And that's what he does, certainly at the collegiate level. Thanks for being with us and making lockdown Hawkeyes, your first listen every day.
Starting point is 00:28:01 We'll talk to you get on Monday until then. Go Hawks.
