I thank God I was born on the good arms of the Midwest, and not on the battlefields of
the U.S.
It's a time of panic, and it's intercepted!
It's picked off right away!
Intercepted by Marty Hooker!
Pick six!
Eight seconds into the game!
Buffen sets up deep in the pocket, goes down the field for Smith!
Oh!
He's got it!
Smith!
Touchdown.
85 yards.
High on.
Touchdown, 10.
Taking a shot in the end zone.
It is caught.
No offense.
Touchdown.
That's either one or you have it.
Go ahead and three.
Yes.
Two-point lead for the Hawkeyes podcast,
your daily podcast covering your Iowa Hawkeyes on the Lockdown Sports Network.
As always, I am your host, Andrew Wade.
Excited to be back for our third episode of the week today.
And there is a lot of stuff to cover on today's show.
The College Football Hall of Fame has announced its 2021 ballot. There was four Hawks on that.
Dylan Doyle has announced where he is going to be transferring to.
We're going to talk a bit about the spring practice format and how that has changed.
Joey LaBosse, Iowa's quarterback recruit in the class of 2021,
has been upgraded to a four-star. The All-Big Ten list has been announced from Athlon Sports. We're
going to talk about that, and we're going to talk about the Iowa United and the fact they did not
make the tournament and what teams got in front of them. Then also, let's talk a bit about the
fall academic schedule for the University of Iowa and how that impacts sports.
So let's hop into it.
If you are familiar with the show before and you have not actually done this already,
please make sure to like, review, and subscribe wherever you downloaded this podcast at.
And make sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
All right, let's hop into it, though.
First, let's start off with the hall of fame guys so four hawks um three players one coach were announced on the 2021 college hall of fame ballot um it was jared devries robert gallery
andre tippett and bob stoops as you all know um was a former iowa assistant coach so awesome stuff
there for those guys obviously hopefully they can get in on their chances within the ballot.
We will not find out, though,
if they made it until early
2021, so obviously lots of time
until then. Just a couple
quick criteria for what actually went
into this, though. They must have
received first-team All-American honors.
They must have been eligible
for
consideration 10 full seasons after their final year of intercollegiate football has been played.
A coach is eligible three full seasons after retirement.
So a couple different criteria in there.
Obviously exciting to see a few of these guys get on the ballot.
Jerry DeVries a first time on the ballot, so that's pretty awesome to see as well.
They are in this list with it.
Wow. I cannot speak today with an additional 78 players and seven coaches from the football
bold subdivision and 99 players and 33 coaches from the divisional ranks. So from the smaller,
smaller schools as well. So my guess is we're likely to see one of these guys get it. I don't
know how we don't actually have Andre Tippett already in there.
But considering the fact that he's been on the ballot a few times,
I think his chances are a little bit less likely.
Jared DeVries, though, has a pretty good chance.
1998 consensus first-team All-American and 1997 Big Ten defensive lineman of the year.
He's a three-time first-team All-Big Ten guy who has literally his first in league history with 78 career tackles for losses.
So pretty exciting stuff.
Robert Gallery, again, a guy who probably should be in there.
A two-time first-team All-Big Ten, first-team All-American in 2003, and a 2003 Outland Trophy winner for the NCAA's best offensive lineman.
Obviously, Bob Stoops, I think, would get in there immediately.
Just an outstanding coach at Oklahoma.
Obviously, he started his career at Iowa,
so that would be really great to see a Stoops get in there.
But obviously, if we get more details, and that won't be for quite some time,
we'll keep you posted.
Again, I think more than likely Jerry DeVries does have a good chance.
So does Bob Stoops.
I don't know about Andre Tippett and Robert Gallagher.
Again, with such a big list, it can be kind of hard to determine who actually
has a good chance and who doesn't. But just by the fact that it's been a couple of years for
Robert Gallagher and Andre Tippett on that list, I think it's going to be a little bit tougher.
Obviously, Jared DeVries being a first-time person on the ballot means that someone wanted to get him on there. We'll see if that actually plays out well for him on that.
Also in some news, like I said, spring practice, the schedule has been confirmed.
So we talked a bit about this on last week's show, camera which show specifically,
but there was basically an addendum to how spring practices or how the preseason practices will work prior to actually getting into real practice.
Again, it's kind of the same advantage for everyone.
Everyone gets a little bit more opportunity to practice, gets a little more time in the film room.
As we talked about, though, it's not really an evaluation period.
Spring practice is a great opportunity for teams to evaluate their players and get a good sense for what kind of team they have. And the players get a good sense for how
well they're, you know, where they're going to be at on that roster. Are they're going to be
a starter? Are they going to be second string, third string? Are they even in line, right? So
they have an opportunity there. And typically we see people sometimes transfer after that spring
practice period, after they get a sense for where they are actually at on the depth chart we don't have that this year and the updated schedule is not really going to
give teams an opportunity to do that so really interesting to see how that that all plays out
and in addition to that spring schedule the schedule was released for the fall academic
calendar and the plan is to have in class or in-person classes at the University of
Iowa which bodes well for the idea of having people at Kinnick Stadium which is a huge advantage for
the Iowa Hawkeyes but interestingly enough they decided there's going to be no return after
Thanksgiving so all classes will be online after Thanksgiving including final exams if I were a
student that sounds freaking awesome except for the fact that you're obviously not going to be able to come back to school and you're going to be stuck
likely with your parents potentially, unless you're off campus. But that's an interesting
schedule. I think the reason why they're doing that is typically the wintertime is a big season
for the flu. We're seeing COVID surge a little bit, right? The cases right now. And I think
there's a fear that it's going to surge again when we get to colder weather.
And then when you combine that with the flu and you combine that with a ton of college
kids all in the same area, that makes kind of a combustible situation from a pandemic
standpoint.
So not having players or not having students return after Thanksgiving will allow them
to basically self-isolate and not spread it on campus.
It's going to be interesting to see what that means for the athletes, though.
My guess is, and I'd assume that they are not going to be leaving,
they will still be on campus, still be practicing.
Obviously, the football team hopefully practicing for a bowl.
The basketball team just getting started with their season,
so they'll definitely be back.
Obviously, we'll keep in mind what's happening with the COVID situation and really not sure what could happen
in December. We've already seen a few Iowa players in Iowa athletics test positive for COVID. We've
seen numerous programs around the country have players test positive for COVID. And there's still
so much we don't know about COVID, right? We, we understand that there's a, you know, that there's a less likely chance of
being a carrier and actually giving someone COVID-19 if you are asymptomatic, but we're not
sure if you can get it multiple times. And I think there's no vaccine as of yet either. So
there's just so much unknown with that. So I think a lot of these things are still pretty fluid.
Obviously, Gary Barta would love to have the Iowa football stadium packed on Saturdays, you know, have Kinnick packed, but it's just not something we can really
predict at this point, but it will be a huge impact to the budget. And for, especially for
a sports program or a sports, you know, athletic, sorry, athletic department that is self-sustaining,
a lot of that is because of the football team. And so this will be, again, really interesting to watch.
If there is a concern about COVID, do the classes cancel?
Sorry, do they go back to online?
How are we going to handle that?
So lots of stuff to come on that, and it's going to be really interesting and fascinating to watch how the world reacts
and specifically how the University of Iowa reacts to that as well.
But that'll do it, though, for segment number one
of the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast today.
As I said, coming up, we're going to talk a bit about the All-Big Ten teams,
talk about the Iowa United, and talk about Joey Labas getting upgraded
to being a four-star recruit.
So coming up, we'll be talking about that.
Before we jump into that, though, make sure to check out,
if you are looking for some car parts, rockauto.com.
Rockauto.com is a family run business open for over 20 years and they give you the best deals on your car parts and they have a very vast selection.
Personally, I don't like going into my local auto place.
I feel uncomfortable.
They don't usually have all the parts I need.
They don't even really care about what I'm trying to get back from them.
And honestly, they make me feel like I'm an idiot because I don't know a lot about cars.
I don't know a lot about the Subarus that I own. However, rockauto.com allows you to find the car
parts you need from the comfort of your home. And you get the same price that the pros do as well.
So you're not paying that upcharge by getting it at a brick and mortar store. And like I said,
they have all the parts you need, whether you're doing a fixer-upper, an old hot rod, or your current driving vehicle,
it allows you to find any part you need and deliver direct to your door.
And as I said, at rockauto.com, they have fantastic prices.
So check out rockauto.com.
Let them know that we sent you by letting them know that Locked On sent you in the
How Did You Hear About Us section.
Like I said, rockauto.com.
Great prices.
Easy to find.
And a fantastic selection.
Check out rockauto.com for all your auto part needs today.
We are back for segment number two of the Locked On Hawkeyes podcast.
And as I said, I wanted to talk a bit about the Iowa United and Joey LaBasse.
Joey LaBasse started out as a three-star recruit when Iowa grabbed him.
He was ranked somewhere in the 1,200th range nationally.
However, he has been upgraded to a four-star recruit by 24-7 Sports.
Their composite ranking has him at an 888th ranked player. However,
according to their list,
he is a rating of
90, which actually puts him somewhere in the
top 300, similar to
a guy we all know about,
Deuce Hogan, who is
joining the Iowa football program now as
their quarterback, hopefully of the future,
but really love to see, obviously,
the growth of that
and obviously the recruiting pick up for Joey LaBosse.
And actually, I'm looking at this now.
Deuce Hogan is only scoring as an 86 according to 24-7 sports.
So Joey LaBosse getting a little bit of a bump according to 24-7 sports.
Love to see that.
Obviously, rankings don't mean a lot in the grand scheme of things.
It's a nice barometer, but it doesn't mean a lot in the grand scheme of things it's a nice
barometer but it doesn't mean a lot when ultimately they get on the game field but i think what we can
really you know look at is the fact the quarterback room is set for the future at iowa with spencer
petras leading the leading the way and likely starting this year and for the next couple years
alex padilla a coach's, a guy who has looked pretty good
in his limited time on campus.
And then Deuce Hogan, a guy who we, if you're an Iowa fan
and you don't know about Deuce Hogan, especially if you're on Twitter,
you're not doing it right.
He is a guy who Iowa fans are going to really love.
Some really big news actually coming out in the next month or so
about some publicity he's going to have as well
that I think Iowa fans are really going to enjoy. I can't really give it away here, but let me tell you, it's going to be fantastic.
And then obviously Joey LaBosse, 6'4", 190-pound dual threat quarterback out of Ohio. I'm excited
to see what he can do when he gets on campus. As soon as he got that offer, he decommitted from
Ball State and committed to the Iowa Hawkeyes. So leading the way in the class of 2021,
our quarterback, Joey LaBosse, really excited about that.
Also on the recruiting news,
Dylan Doyle has announced that he is transferring to Baylor University.
I find that kind of an interesting match when you ultimately think about it. Dylan Doyle, an Iowa City native, coming out of Iowa City,
ranked as the 762nd best prospect in the nation,
the fourth best prospect in Iowa, only had three offers coming out of college.
And that was likely because he was almost always going to go to Iowa City with his dad.
The only offers he had coming out, though, were Northern Illinois and UCF.
So I'm going to look at Baylor's roster real quick, though,
and just see does he have a chance immediately.
It'll be interesting to see if he can get a waiver, too.
You know, we talked a bit about this.
Some of the guys, like, for example, not Kayvon Merriweather,
dropping the ball here.
DJ Johnson, excuse me, transferring to Purdue.
He has a very good case to get a waiver and play immediately due to the allegations around Chris Doyle.
Does Dylan Doyle get that?
I know he clearly did not probably experience the same things that the other athletes did in the Iowa program.
But is he, I mean, this is a really interesting circumstance because his father was the one who really kind of sparked all these things with some of his racial comments.
Does he have an opportunity to get that waiver?
It'll be interesting to see.
Right now, Baylor in the Big Ten, obviously a passing conference, not really known for their defense.
Dylan Doyle is a fantastic middle linebacker, a guy who was in line to get a lot of snaps this season for the Iowa Hawkeyes,
should step in, and is stepping into a relatively young room.
You've got Terrell Bernard, a redshirt sophomore at the middle linebacker spot,
Tristan Slinker, a junior transfer.
I'm going to figure out where he came from.
But nonetheless, Big 12 defenses are not known for being good.
So that, to me, will be a good opportunity for him,
especially if he can get on the field right away.
If not, obviously we're going to wait and see for another couple years.
But Tristan Slinker, not a guy to really worry too much about.
5'11", 220-pound guy.
Played two seasons at Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, Oklahoma
before transferring to Baylor.
Again, great opportunity for Dylan Doyle. I wish him
the best. Unfortunate circumstances seeing him leave, but would be really great to see him have
some good success at Baylor University. And also, the Iowa United did not make the TBT. As we have
talked about before, that was something we knew for a couple days. It does suck, and I was really
excited to watch them in the tournament. I do think they could have done well. What's really
frustrating, though, is when you look at and see the fact that they didn't get in due to a couple
other teams. And that, to me, is the couple of teams that we've seen get in are just, it's just
really frustrating. So let's look at some of the lower seeds and what, you know, whether or not I feel like Iowa United could have beat them. The number
24 seed Jackson, Tennessee underdogs made up of state farm agents and long haul truckers, truckers,
excuse me, Jackson, Tennessee underdogs rely heavily on their scoring machine, Jalen Barford,
former Arkansas player. This is ridiculous. Me, Iowa United clearly has a better team than them. The Thundering
Herd alumni team, give me a break. Sideline Cantor, love what they're doing. They actually
had a pretty good performance last year. I think they definitely deserve to be there.
The Stillwater Stars, Oklahoma State has had some good players, and they have a former NBA player,
which is probably how they got in, Markel Brown.
But I do think it's ridiculous.
I think Iowa United could have beat them.
Mid-American unity.
So you're telling me the freaking Mack got in over the state of Iowa?
Give me a break.
Men in Mackie.
I think it's ironic that Iowa United was actually recruiting a guy from this team,
potentially was going to play with the Iowa United.
That should speak a lot about the Iowa United versus the Menomackie, the Purdue team.
To me, I think a team Iowa United could have beat.
The Clemson Alumni team,
they're kind of running on the backs of two guys
who helped them go to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.
Not enough for me.
War Tampa has a pretty solid team.
They have a couple guys from Auburn's Final Four team,
but I would take the guys from Iowa State and Iowa over that.
House of Pain wasted no freaking time.
The Illinois alumni team wasted no time getting Mike Dahm,
which will definitely help them.
Illinois does have a pretty good basketball team overall in the history,
but in the history, but in
the last 10 years, they haven't really done a lot. So that's not a really impressive group to me.
Armored Athlete, they've actually had a pretty good success in the tournament. So I get that.
Team Heartfire has some, you know, former big time guys from Baylor, but a team I think Iowa
could have beat as well. Team CP3, Chris Paul's team. They're led by Kennedy Meeks and PJ Harrison.
Not a team.
I think Iowa and Nattie could have beat them.
Team Brotherly Love.
I don't even know these guys in this team.
Could have beat them.
Team Hines.
I mean, one of your big guys is Ethan Happ.
That isn't, you know, Ethan Happ's a solid player, but nothing special.
Kyle Hines, obviously a beast.
I mean, even going down, like the Big Ten team, you got Caleb and Andre Wesson,
two guys who played well at Ohio state, but, and Nick Ward, another guy who played at Michigan
state. I think Iowa United's bigs match up pretty darn well, if not better than them.
I, so this just in Dayton, the Dayton alumni team, I'm Dayton's had some good teams, but
come on. I, this is just frustrating as hell. I hope this doesn't mean the end for Iowa United getting screwed by the TBT committee,
but we will obviously see.
We'll try to get Matt on the show later on to see what his thoughts are
and kind of what the plan is going forward.
But that will do it for segment number two of our Locked on Hawkeyes podcast.
Coming up on segment number three,
I want to make sure we're talking about the Athlon Sports All Big Ten teams
and who I think might be a good candidate to be an All Big Ten player coming in.
I'll even give my predictions.
Before I do that, though, I do have a couple of messages.
First and foremost, the most important message of the day.
The Locked On Podcast Network stands against racism and social injustice.

We are back for our third and final segment of the show today,
segment number three of the Locked On Hawkeyes podcast.
And as I said, we're going to be talking through the Athlon Sports All-Big Ten team. I want to talk about that and really who could be All-Big Ten performers
for the Iowa Hawkeyes this season if we do have football in fact,
which I sure freaking hope we do.
But a lot of representation from Iowa on that list.
I'm going to run through the list first, give a few guys who I think were ridiculous,
not just Iowa guys, but just in general,
and then talk about who I think from Iowa could make it
or maybe what the differences are from here.
So, first team offense, you have two linemen.
Tyler Linderbaum and Aleric Jackson on the first team offensive line.
You got Keith Duncan and Amir Smith-Marset as specialists.
No surprise there for the Duncan and Amir Smith-Marset.
Amir Smith-Marset might go down as one of the best returners in the history of the conference.
Also, Aleric Jackson with a good rebound year.
I have no doubt he could be a first team offensive lineman.
Tyler Linderbaum is getting a lot of praise.
Actually, just recently listening to Pro Football Focus's two-for-one draft podcast, they actually
have Tyler Linderbaum in their top 100 players coming into the season, which is pretty impressive
considering he's only played offensive line for one year. On the second team offense, Tyler Goodson. Look at him go. True
sophomore. Made the team as an all-purpose back. And then we have Chauncey Golston as a defensive
lineman on the second team defense. On the third team offense, we have no one. On the third team
defense, we got Jack Corner, the the Iowa safety who was in a serious
accident just a few you know last week actually if he is healthy that would be awesome to see him
on the field obviously his health and his friend's health is first and foremost most important on the
fourth team offense we've got Amir Smith-Marset as wide receiver Sam Laporta as a tight end, and on the defense, we got Davian Nixon and Matt
Hankins as fourth team defenders. So what this means to me, I think there's a little bit of
wiggle room here. I do think Amir Smith-Marset could be a first team wide receiver. I think
Brandon Smith has the opportunity to be a first team wide receiver as well, especially if they
unleash the offense with Spencer Petras in his first year at quarterback.
So that's something to watch out for. You know, Amir Smith-Narset was a fantastic all-around player
last year. So as a return man, I think he can make it. And I think as a wide receiver, he could as
well. Brandon Smith, if he can stay healthy, was an absolute beast and was, you know, the leader of
the receiving group last year from a catches standpoint. Those two guys could do some work.
Sam Laporta, I think,
is pretty interesting. He came on strong the last couple weeks, so to be included as a fourth team
offensive guy, I think people are getting really high on him as the next great tight end out of
Iowa. I couldn't agree more. Matt Hankins has been such an up-and-down player over the course of his
career. Could he have a Michael Ojemudia like rise in his senior
season? He definitely has the talent. I just don't know with him. He just had such an up and down
career all around. And Davian Nixon, this is one of my sleeper guys. This is a guy who I think is
going to explode on the scene. He showed a lot of big things to me last year, a lot of explosive
plays. And I think he's going to have a big impact. I think there's a chance he could also move up as well on that list. A couple snubs,
I think personally, well actually real quick, let's finish up this list. Jack Corner, I'm
surprised he's actually on the third team defense, but good for him. On the second team defense,
Chauncey Golsan is getting the love he deserves. I think he was overshadowed a bit by Eje Paneza.
The numbers aren't always there from a sack perspective,
but he's going to be a leader of this defensive line.
And if Iowa's defense wants to be anywhere in the realm that they were last year,
they need a guy like Chauncey Golsan to step up and play.
Tyler Goodson, honestly, if it wasn't for some of the,
basically the solid all-around running backs in this conference,
I think they would have had him as a first-team guy.
And the fact that he doesn't have a lot of playing time under his belt
doesn't hurt.
But this is the guy who, this could be, you know,
the first Iowa running back to be drafted since Sean Green.
He is just such a dynamic player all around.
And if Iowa's smart, if Brian Ferencz is smart as an offensive coordinator,
they are getting him involved in the game as a pass catcher, as a running back,
utilizing him all over the freaking field.
This is a guy that Iowa doesn't typically have a guy like that
with such amazing quickness and explosiveness.
You need to give him the ball no matter what.
Let's look at a couple of guys, though, that I feel like could also be in the mix as well.
Coy Cronk, a guy who should not be slept on at all.
He's coming off a major injury.
However, he is a fantastic football player,
and prior to the season last year,
was considered a potential third, fourth round prospect.
So coming out this year, he has one more season to prove himself.
I think he is a guy who could be a first or second team performer if
he comes back healthy. In his career at Indiana, he was named ESPN.com's Big Ten All-Freshman and
a All-American, sorry, Freshman All-American. As a junior, he had a fantastic season as well,
and coming into 2019 was actually on the Outland Trophy watch list.
So this is a guy who I think could notch
a first or second team All-Big Ten honor.
Watch out for Coy Cronk.
Sam Laporta, again, I think he could be higher up on that list.
Spencer Petras, the quarterback groom in the Big Ten
is pretty solid.
You have Tanner Morgan, who is actually pretty good
as a second team quarterback.
You have Justin Fields, who is likely a first-round quarterback
as the first-team offense quarterback.
On the third team, you've got Sean Clifford.
He put up big numbers at Penn State.
I don't doubt he'll do that again.
On the fourth team, though, is Adrian Martinez,
and he has literally no wide receivers.
They're all gone.
The only one he's got is Wando Robinson.
So I was joking with my buddy.
I actually feel like Nebraska should look at going to the wing offense again
and kind of just running the ball because they have no one for Adrian Martinez to throw to.
I think Spencer Petters could slip into that fourth-team spot, possibly.
Going through the defense, I don't see a ton on the defensive line.
I think we could see Jack Campbell or Nick Neiman or Justin Jacobs,
whoever actually takes that middle linebacker
spot, I think we could see them potentially get on a four-team spot.
Digimon Colbert's a guy who I really love at that weak side linebacker spot.
I think he could potentially slip in there as well.
And Dane Belton is a guy who really performed well as a true freshman last year.
Depending on where he slips into, he could be a guy to watch out for.
And Riley Moss definitely gets the stats.
So from a stat perspective, Riley Moss can put up those great statistics
that would get him the notoriety and recognition.
So again, I basically just named half the team,
but I can see a couple of those guys slipping into that third or fourth team spot,
especially if the defense plays as well as it has in the past.
Let me know what your thoughts are, though.
Feel free to tweet at me at LockedOnIowa.
Let me know your thoughts for the All-Big Ten teams
and who you do agree or don't agree with.
Again, lots of talk about going into the football season.
I'm excited just to get to the football season.
And based on what I look at with this roster,
they have a tough schedule,
but there's a ton of talent on this Iowa football roster.
So really excited for this upcoming season.
However, that will do it for our show today.
That will do it for our third and final show of the week
for the Locked on Hawkeyes podcast.
